Recent events pertaining to U. S. energy needs and development of alternative energy fuel resources have made the American public more aware of past and present coal mining operations, and their impacts on the nation's economy and environment. This awareness has developed rapidly due to increased government involvement and consequent media coverage. This is true particularly in the Western states and in Texas. One of the consequences of this increased public awareness is public concern over the perceived and real consequences of mining operations. Emphasis has been placed on potential releases of toxic and hazardous substances, and possible carcinogens. The result of this public concern is a mounting effort at both state and Federal levels to promote stricter laws regulating the mining industry.

The most important aspect of modelling a geological variable, such as metal grade, is the spatial correlation. Spatial correlation describes the relationship between realisations of a geological variable sampled at different locations. Any method for spatially modelling such a variable should be capable of accurately estimating the true spatial correlation. Conventional kriged models are the most commonly used in mining for estimating grade or other variables at unsampled locations, and these models use the variogram or covariance function to model the spatial correlations in the process of estimation. However, this usage assumes the relationships of the observations of the variable of interest at nearby locations are only influenced by the vector distance between the locations. This means that these models assume linear spatial correlation of grade. In reality, the relationship with an observation of grade at a nearby location may be influenced by both distance between the locations and the value of the observations (ie non-linear spatial correlation, such as may exist for variables of interest in geometallurgy). Hence this may lead to inaccurate estimation of the ore reserve if a kriged model is used for estimating grade of unsampled locations when non-linear spatial correlation is present. Copula-based methods, which are widely used in financial and actuarial modelling to quantify the non-linear dependence structures, may offer a solution. This method was introduced by Bßrdossy and Li (2008) to geostatistical modelling to quantify the non-linear spatial dependence structure in a groundwater quality measurement network. Their copula-based spatial modelling is applied in this research paper to estimate the grade of 3D blocks. Furthermore, real-world mining data is used to validate this model. These copula-based grade estimates are compared with the results of conventional ordinary and lognormal kriging to present the reliability of this method.CITATION:Musafer, G N, Thompson, M H, Kozan, E and Wolff, R C, 2013. A crescente necessidade por resultados de análises laboratoriais dentro das indústrias são cada vez mais exigentes em termos de tempo de resposta e precisão. Aliado a isso, a elevação do volume de minério de ferro exportado e o aumento da variabilidade desses produtos requerem processos cada vez mais rigorosos e tomados de decisões mais rápidas. Nesse contexto, os analisadores on-line têm um papel fundamental, pois atendem tais exigências, além de preservarem a segurança operacional. Este trabalho tem por objetivo mostrar o desenvolvimento da implantação de analisadores de umidade on line na descarga dos vagões da Vale no Terminal Ponta da Madeira. A metodologia utilizada na medição de umidade dos analisadores usa o princípio de transmissão de micro-ondas, que é a melhor tecnologia disponível no mercado para este fim. Dentre as etapas de implantação, que abrange desde a aquisição dos equipamentos até a avaliação dos controles e ajustes operacionais, é mostrado o período de cada etapa, os problemas encontrados e as soluções adotadas. Em suma, atualmente há medição de umidade on line na descarga deste site e está em fase de implantação a análise durante o carregamento do embarque para controle de processo.

A resposta a impacto balístico dos compósitos de alumina com polietileno de ultra alto peso molecular (PEAUPM) com diferentes concentrações relativas de alumina foi investigada. Os testes de impacto foram realizados em velocidade subsônica usando sistema de ar comprimido. As amostras de melhor desempenho foram as A00 e A90, sendo fraca a adesão interfacial entre a matriz de PEUAPM e as partículas de alumina. A profundidade de penetração (PP) em madeira MDF, protegido por um disco feito do compósito, diminuiu com o aumento da concentração de alumina no compósito.

Driven by market trends, increasing environmental accountability, government regulations and fostered by the Company’s strategic plan, ArcelorMittal Tubarão has developed new steel products to deliver better solutions to fit each customer’s needs. This often translates in higher strength, more complex and dimensionally challenging (thinner and wider) steels to attend a broad array of goals, such as reduction of vehicles fuel consumption and carbon emissions, increase in fatigue performance of heat treated parts, higher load capacity per net weight in vessels or wagons and lower supplying lead time as ArcelorMittal Tubarão establishes itself as a domestic option for so far imported grades. Based on the annual Product Development Plan, a structured workflow involves technical discussions from an operational point of view about safety issues, metallurgical project, steel grade family definitions, offline simulations prior to field trials, deformation resistance and process parameters adjustments and scheduling strategy. As a result of the increasing synergy between the areas, the share of new materials developed in recent years has been sustainably increased up to 15% in 2018, adding value to the final product without impact on hot rolled coil output and with a low cobble index.

O desenvolvimento de nanopartículas magnéticas vem recebendo bastante atenção de pesquisadores devido a sua potencial aplicação em diferentes campos tecnológicos, principalmente em microeletrônica e medicina. A magnetita nanoparticulada é particularmente atraente para estas finalidades, pois apresenta comportamento superparamagnético, biocompatibilidade e resistencia à oxidação. Neste estudo foi avaliado a síntese das nanopartículas pela coprecipitação. Para isso foi observado a influência da razão molar de Fe+2/Fe+3 e da variação de concentração de NaOH na nucleação e precipitação das partículas. Sendo possível, determinar os melhores parâmetros para obtenção das mesmas e garantindo as suas propriedades. Para a constatação estrutural, a caracterização das amostras foi realizada por difração de raios X (DRX). A razão molar de Fe+2/Fe+3 se mostrou uma variável importante, em razões muito pequenas o resultado obtido foi goetita, enquanto a síntese a partir da razão 0,5 observou-se apenas a magnetita. E a variação da concentração de OH- teve influência no tamanho das partículas nucleadas, no qual menores partículas foram obtidas em meios mais básicos.

Pelletizing of iron ore fines is an important process used to produce high quality of raw materials for the subsequent reduction processes in the ironmaking industries. The process involves the production of green pellets and subsequent induration on a traveling grate furnace to promote inner partial melt and agglomeration which confer physical and metallurgical proprieties appropriated to the subsequent reduction processes. The pellets are produced with addition of charcoal to improve efficiency in the reduction processes. The lignin coal from sugarcane straw is an alternative source to replace the charcoal or coke in the self reduction of pellets. This work focused on the influence of biomass on the chemical kinetics parameters inner agglomerate pellet structure under industrial process conditions of the travelling grate furnace due hot gas flows within the pellets.

Underground mines are complex environments that require continuous control and monitoring actions in order to have a safe and efficient operation. At Nexa, the goal of achieving "zero harm" promotes the constant search for in its operational processes. Currently, there are manual activities that reduce the agility and precision when working with information from inside the mine, using mostly radio communication and management by sight of badges as an operational standard. This project was born in the context of increasing the operational safety of underground mines, bringing gains to the entire process involving the underground.

Based on optimization using response surface methodology designed by Box- Behnken, to study the interaction of wet industrial salt with moisture drying temperature (50-90 ); duration (10-50s); and the weight of the materials (20-60g). The results show that: the experimental parameter conforms to the quadratic equation model to influence the moisture content and the dehydration speed., in analyzing the significance and the interaction of various factors, the optimum by the Design Expert software conditions for drying with microwave radiation include temperature of 90 , duration of 10s, and sample mass of 26g. Verified by experiment, the moisture content after drying is less than 0.25% and the dehydration rate reached 1.37g/min, between the predicted value and the actual value confirmed good fitting degree.

Spiral concentrators are widely used in the coal industry treating fine (-1mm) coal. Their application was a limitation to the product quality until the introduction of low-cut spirals which allow a lower quality ash product to be produced, thus expanding the market. The Exxaro Grootegeluk 1 (GG1) plant has a two-stage traditional rougher-cleaner spiral circuit using conventional SX4 spirals to produce semi-soft coking coal product at 12.5% ash by mass. The overall plant product is 10.3% ash meaning that the coarser sized coal dense medium separation circuits must compensate. A low density cut-point spiral targetting 10.3% ash would thus be beneficial to the overall complex. The spirals were tested in the two-stage plant environment and in a pilot plant. This paper discusses the findings and compares a two stage four-turn low density cut and conventional spiral. The two spiral technologies were unable to sustain a 10.3% ash product. Pilot test work was also conducted on GG1 coal, demonstrating that an eight-turn low density cut-point spiral achieves the targetted 10.3% ash under controlled conditions. Redução dos custos de operação e a produção de aço com menor impacto ambiental são diretrizes unânimes na siderurgia atual. A tecnologia das Turbinas de Recuperação de Topo (Top Recovery Turbines – TRT) é um aliado importante para seguir nessas direções. As TRTs produzem energia elétrica a partir do gás de alta pressão proveniente do topo dos Altos Fornos, gerando energia elétrica sem impacto em emissões. Durante a campanha de operação da turbina, a mesma pode perder eficiência operacional devido a, dentre outros, deposição sobre as palhetas. Com o intuito de melhorar o desempenho da turbina estabilizando sua geração durante toda sua campanha, foi desenvolvido um trabalho de dosagem de polímero dispersante na água de spray da turbina (para turbinas com tecnologia de água de spray na admissão do gás). A dosagem do polímero dispersante visa reduzir a deposição e incrustração nas palhetas, reduzindo assim a perda de performance durante a campanha causadas pelo incremento de massa nas palhetas. Os resultados alcançados em um teste de campo em uma siderúrgica no Brasil foram um incremento de 52% na geração durante a campanha onde o polímero dispersante foi aplicado. Com a aplicação do polímero, uma melhora significativa na confiabilidade e performance da turbina assim como a possibilidade da redução no consumo de água foram atingidos

This paper outlines the DPC process as na economic and environment friendly option for the use of cultivated forest as a source of raw material for metallurgical charcoal.The DPC process was specially developed to bring logistic, environmental, technical, economic and global energy efficiency when compared to termal1 the existing biomass carbonization process. The DPC process utilizes the volatile materials (condensable and non condensable) as a source of the energy required by the carbonization process guarantying its complete combustion. As result the DPC process avoids the burning of termal1 the loaded wood, obtaining a higher charcoal to biomass yield, and avoids the emission to the atmosphere of polluting gases. Gases emitted by the carbonizing wood have na energy termal1e enough to dry the wood soon after its harvesting. By avoiding the storage in the field during na average of 150 days, the resulting economy is quite significant. As a termal1e1 the higher charcoal to biomass yield na termal1e1e economy is obtained through the reduction of the cultivated forest term. This paper emphasizes the economic advantages of the DPC process.

After conventional drill and shoot methods were determined to be unfeasible due the fractured nature of the ground, a "coyote" blast was designed to produce 250,000 tons of rock from Rhone-Poulenc's Maiden Rock silica pit located near Butte, MT. This paper will cover the design and excavation of the explosive drifts, the placement and priming of 190,000 pounds of explosives, and the backfilling of the drift to provide confinement of the charges.

Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary): I think very highly of the novel and ingenious device of Prof. Richards for analyzing the movement of the various elements of the jig; it is a method that certainly seems to promise valuable results, if we could only make certain that these various indicator-appliances have no effect upon the action of the jig. I would like, however, to suggest that in future experiments the connection between the plunger indicator-rod and the pencil should be made by means of parallel motions, so as better to reproduce the rectilinear motion of the piston. I should expect, if this were done, that the " curve " of the plunger in the Harz jig, at any rate, would be represented either by straight lines or else by quite regular curves, according to the method by which the plunger is set in motion; the apparent combinatioil of straight line and curve seems difficult to explain. With respect to the water-curve, I am afraid I am completely at fault, but no doubt Prof. Richards can explain my difficulty. Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.
