The history of the rail and mining industry in Queensland over the past century is inseparable. Indeed it was mining that led to the construction of the line west from Townsville and that shaped its current alignment. The discovery of gold at Charters Towers started construction of the Great Northern Railway west from Townsville in 1879, with completion to Charters Towers in 1882. The line was extended to Hughenden in 1887 and to Cloncurry in 1907 - driven by copper mines both to the south west and the north west of Cloncurry. The mining industryÆs association with funding the construction of rail lines to service their individual mines began in this area when the Hampden and Mount Elliot mine companies agreed to pay 50 per cent of the cost of the line from Cloncurry. The line to Selwyn was completed in 1910. Copper mining saw the construction of many other rail lines in the Cloncurry area in the 1910 - 20 period before copper prices slumped. Included in these lines were the Malbon to Duchess line and the line to Kajabbi and beyond.

Solinox is a physical scrubbing process capable of removing a number of noxious materials from off-gasses, especially SO2, hydrocarbons, halogens, heavy metals such as dust, etc. As these materials are dissolved physically, (not chemically bound), the solvent is absolutely stable and no by-products are formed in the scrubbing cycle. The process has? been installed in three plants up to now, treating from approximately 30 MMSCFD to approximately 100 MMSCFD. These installations are in a non ferrous metal smelting operation, in a cellulose factory, and in a roasting process.

The growth and oxidation characteristics of any bacterial culture are ultimately determined by the nature of the sample being treated. The most important parameters in the application of bio-oxidation are bacterial cell number, growth rates, oxygen uptake and rate of oxidation. Cells present in the solution of an established culture were counted directly using a microscope, related to a protein value, and then used to determine the total cell number (in solution and on the solids). Protein determination of total cells enabled the growth rates on slurry to be calculated. The cell number and culture growth is related to the iron and sulphide contents of the sample. To illustrate these considerations a moderately thermophilic culture was used to treat ore and concentrate samples obtained from Australian mines.

MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."

At long last, mining is on the rebound in Minnesota?s Iron Range and the excitement is starting to show. The SME Minnesota Section?s annual meeting was once again held in the heart of Iron Range country, at the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center on the Duluth waterfront. The conference boasted a record attendance of 475 people and its largest-ever trade show. Appearances by Governor Mark Dayton?s new Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) appointee, Tony Sertich, as well as a local Fox news crew (see clip on SME website [link: http://fox21online.com/news/duluth-mining-conference-breeds-optimism-tech-innovation]) made clear that a lot of eyes [ ] are on the industry as it dusts itself off from the 2008-2009 recession. While the early years of the 21st century were very good to the Iron Range, the global drop in commodities prices and production left many companies reeling and brought back bad memories of the collapse of the industry in the 1980s. However, two years of solid growth and a rebound to above pre-2008 production levels have let the Minnesota mining industry to relax a little and talk seriously about long-term growth and stability.

As a part of a large research and development program in Finland, a system calibration for an UAV measurement method having practical experiments in a Jorvas Railway Yard design and construction project. The Railway yard construction are was measured using an UAV measurement device by Smartplanes (Smartone) and using some reference points measured by a GNSS device. The measured data was cleaned, combined and adjusted through Least Squares Optimization using the software developed by a Finnish company Pieneering Oy. As references, two different laser scans as well as total station surveys were used. For applicability evaluation, the accuracy of measurement, the reliability of measurement, and the economy of measurement were used. Based on the comparisons, the achieved precision of the UAV measurement was high, instead the accuracy of measurement was not sufficient in this case. The principle of this photogrammetric measurement includes a lot of redundant observations making it possible to achieve a high level of reliability. The economy in this Railway Yard Design project was not able to achieve.

"Most SAG grinding operations currently use ball sizes between 5.5 and 6 inch maximum size. However, in most cases the use of this ball sizes hasn’t been justified by a phenomenological analysis of the real effect on the grinding process, but rather by trial and error. The analysis of the influence of ball sizes in SAG grinding hasn’t been developed in detail by considering the effect on process parameters inside the mill, grinding efficiency or internal classification. Historically a conventional grinding reference has been made on the empirical procedure developed by Azzaroni (1980). Further to Azzaroni’s methodology, Sepulveda (Sepúlveda, 2007) developed the SPEC methodology, incorporating the ball size effect on the grinding efficiency parameters using a population balance model included on Molycop tools spreadsheets.This paper demonstrates a detailed analysis at pilot scale of the ball size employed in SAG grinding and scaling that exists between the different levels. This analysis includes assessing the effect of balls sizes on parameters associated with grinding efficiency and its effect on the total fill level, product size distribution and specific energy consumption, among others. In a complementary way it develops a technical - economical evaluation from industrial data comparing two different ball sizes and its effect on the grinding process analysed integrally."

The mining industry collects a significant amount of operational data. However, gleaning useful information from the terabytes of data is difficult, and not just because of the sheer volume of the data. Therefore, an automated tool was developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to go through data and apply sophisticated statistical and neural network techniques in order to identify the data streams that are important to a process. This paper presents results from the tool as applied to SAG mill data from a gold mine. The results were compared to results achieved earlier with available commercial modeling tools. The comparison indicates that there was little or no loss in performance by automating the very complicated process of neural network modeling. Therefore, the intent of the exercise, to examine if complicated modeling tasks can be automated, was realized. Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 12, pp. 52-54. Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. Cryogenic grinding of Printed Circuit Board will bring less pollution, reduce energy costs, smaller particles, regular particle size, efficient process, separation various materials due to different fracture toughness. Systemic studies of recycling discarded Printed Circuit Board (PCB) by low-temperature modification and cryogenic grinding have been made in this paper. Firstly test mechanical property of PCB at different low-temperature, including impact strength, flexural strength, and shear strength. Do experiment on the power consumption of different cooling temperature, The results show that the average power consumption is lower between -30? to -60? and the average power is decrease in evidence at -30?. Use ZKB type double roll shear crusher to crush PCB to 20mm×20mm particle size, in a temperature range of -10 ~ -30? Used R type mill to grind sample to minus 3mm under different working condition, the average power consumption is decrease in evidence from -10 ? to -30 ?, power consumption is the lest at rotational speed is 1180rpm.

The systems of geophysical monitoring have been already put into operation at coal mines and ore mines. Since at present it is rather difficult to conduct mine experiments; it is necessary to start a new step in joining of geomechanics and seismic. The linking geomechanical and geophysical monitoring at coal mines and ore mines today became possible due to progress in development of numerical methods of modeling of stress state and technology for processing of seismic information. This paper describes one potential step in linking geomechanical and seismic monitoring at coal mines and ore mines.

"Manalta Coal Ltd. 's Vesta Mine will supply Alberta Power Limited's 740 MW Battle River Generating Station with 1 128 000 tonnes of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal in 1983. Mana/ta Coal Ltd. and Alberta Power Limited are in their seventh year of a 31-year coal supply agreement. With the exception of localized topographic highs where three coal seams are mined, the Vesta Mine is primarily a single-seam mining operation. Vesta's comprehensive programs of mine planning, preventative maintenance, reclamation, and employee relations make it an efficient and a well run operation. Introduction The Vesta Mine, located in east-central Alberta approximately 300 km northeast of Calgary, supplies sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to Alberta Power Limited's 740 MW Battle River Generating Station. The coal reserves and principal stripping equipment are owned by Alberta Power Limited. Manalta Coal Ltd. owns and operates the additional mining equipment and support facilities. Coal production is from a single pit, 3.5 km in length. Both single and multi-seam operations are encountered in the active pit. In 1983, production is anticipated to increase to I 128 000 tonnes from 906 000 tonnes in 1982. The additional tonnage will be achieved by operating 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The following sections briefly highlight historical, geological and mining/reclamation aspects of the Vesta Mine. Figure I illustrates the location of the Vesta Mine in relation to the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. History Coal mining for domestic use began near the turn of the century in the Vesta Mine area. Initially, small underground room-and-pillar operations were dominant. As equipment technology advanced, surface strip mining replaced the underground methods."

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. "INTRODUCTION It can be vital that bolted joints holding subassemblies together remain secure. Bolts should resist the loosening effects of vibrations and dynamic loads yet need to be easily removable during maintenance. When a threaded fastener is subjected to vibration, the rapid movement causes a lowering of friction against the threads and a subsequent loss of preload. The loss of preload allows the fastener to vibrate loose and possibly fall out. As the diameter of fasteners increase desired preload becomes increasingly more difficult to achieve. Input torque requirements for achieving proper bolt preload is exponentially related to any given fasteners diameter. This means that specialized tooling or bolting practices are usually required to attempt the tightening of fasteners to reach their required preload. Traditional methods can cause problems with joint integrity and do not provide consistent bolt load across the bolted surface. BOLTED CONNECTIONS A failed critical bolted joint can lead to high maintenance costs, machine downtime, and risk to worker safety. Control of the clamp load in a bolted joint is vital. However, when faced with a problem joint, it is not surprising that the design engineer will not have an answer if asked about the clamp load. Torque calculations must always be based on the existing conditions that often are vague. Unless all parameters are correct, the calculation will be unreliable. Examples of parameters are: • Thread condition of the fasteners • Hardness of contact surface • Material (steel, aluminium, copper, etc.) • Extra friction from a locking fastener • Extra friction from an adhesive • Lubricant on the thread • Type of bolt head (flanged, regular or serrated) • Surface coating of the bolt • New or reused fastener During tightening, bolts are subjected to both tensile and torsional stress. The total stress in a bolt can be calculated using the formula: Total stress = vsx2 + 3txy2 In order to maximize the desired tensile stress (sx) it is vital to minimize the torsional stress (txy). Tensile stress (clamp load) is achieved when the bolt is axially elongated. Unwanted torsional stress (twisting) in bolts arises during tightening due to thread friction. High thread friction increases torsional stress and causes yielding at lower clamp load levels than normal. A lubricant is necessary to minimize the malign torsional stress. However, many commonly used bolt-locking systems are based on increased thread friction (deformed nuts, adhesives, etc). To minimize thread friction and concurrently safely secure the joint has often incorrectly been considered impossible. The use of locking systems that increase thread friction is the single most common reason why the full capacity of bolted joints is not utilized. The following example illustrates the problem."

A colourimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured. The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimisation of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimise the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.

During the production of aluminium in smelters, the anodes used in electrolysis cells have to be replaced frequently. Anode butts are usually placed on anode trays for transportation and cooling, a practice during which Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) is emitted in large quantities. Covers developed in 2000 by Alcoa Deschambault to fit on the anodes trays were implemented, resulting in significant reductions of HF emissions. However, the covers are expensive to maintain and use short-life consumable parts. In January 2004, STAS and Alcoa decided to develop a more efficient design of cover, with lower maintenance costs and no need for consumable materials (like soft cushions). This paper presents a summary of the work performed to develop the new design as well as a summary of the test results.

The Fitzroy River Aqua-Eco Health Project is a collaborative research project between the Central Queensland University, the University of Queensland and BMA. It is designed to assess the aquatic ecology and health of the streams within the Fitzroy catchment located adjacent to mine sites. The universities are conducting an independent sampling program expected to yield the most comprehensive monitoring to date. The project design incorporates in situ testing of water quality variables including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, oxidation reduction potential, pH and turbidity. Water and sediment chemistry incorporate testing for sulfate, suspended solids, nutrients and metals. This sampling is complemented by quantifying changes in the abundance and diversity of a wide range of biota, including microbial, macro invertebrates and fish.This paper will detail the program and highlight some of the particular difficulties in conducting this type of research in ephemeral stream systems. "WHAT I PROPOSE TO DO is to review or report very briefly and generally on the most important subject areas of environmental concern within the mining industry and to indicate the progress being made. First, however, it seems to me both appropriate and necessary to refer to what I said in an address to the CIM Annual Western Meeting, in November 1971, in Vancouver. At that time, I tried to convey: that the awareness and alertness of this far-flung and diversified industry was sharply on the up-swing; that the knowledge of helpful technology for the abatement of pollution by water and solids was significantly increasing; that most mines were doing something about it; that many had already achieved a recycling of process water to a really significant extent; that progress was being made - though not without considerable difficulty - on the large-scale neutralization and subsequent chemical treatment of acid- and metals-bearing waters; that increasing work was being done by individual mining companies on methods for the vegetation of completed tailings impoundments; and that it had been possible to develop a meaningful estimate of the amount of money to be spent by the industry on environmental control measures during the period 1971-75 (as much as $500,- 000,000 ) . Reference was also made at that time to the constructive work in hand toward the fixation, elimination or dispersion of sulphur from smelters and to the considerable attention which was being given by the indust(y itself toward in-plant problems, e.g., dust and noise. Finally, note was taken of the fact that the inclusion of environmental control costs in the pre-operational financial provisions of new mining operations is now established practice."

The Greens Creek Ore Bodies are located approximately 18 miles southwest of Juneau, Alaska in an area on Admiralty Island classified as a non-wilderness national monument. An area-wide stream sediment geochemistry program targeted the deposit in October of 1973. Today, after 37,000 meters of combined surface and underground diamond drilling, three ore zones are known to exist with total reserves approaching 4.1 million tonnes. Lying within moderately folded metasediments of an undetermined age, these orebodies are thought to be of seafloor exhalite orgin and contain unusual and impressive amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper.

THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. 'The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.
