The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

Low-cost and environmentally friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and starch, have been used in the flotation of some sulfide and nonsulfide minerals. This paper discusses the fundamentals, current applications and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC and starch in minerals flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two-phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system.

Bioleaching has an increasingly important place among available mining technologies as biological processes have emerged as alternatives for metal recovery, especially for metals like gold and copper. An important disadvantage of bioleaching is the slow reaction rates, with microbial attack times often lasting weeks. Therefore, applicable research is required to improve these rates. From previous research, copper bioleaching has been divided into two specific regimes: (1) surface reaction controlling step and (2) mix of surface reaction and diffusion controlling steps. The presented model, which includes the effects of both these regimes, predicted the results of copper bioleaching recovery with good accuracy.

As the demand for most industrial minerals on the world market continues to climb, educational institutions maintain traditional policy in emphasizing chiefly metallic ore deposits and energy resources in addition to the general disciplines. In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. J. T. Pullon, Rowangarth, Roundhay, Leeds, England :— In discussing Mr. Lee's paper, I wish to call attention to the fact that Mr. B. II. Thwaite (who was heard here yesterday on the subject of the application of blast-furnace gas for the production of power, of which he was undoubtedly the pioneer) read, at the Engineering Congress in Glasgow in 1901, a paper on the profitable utilization of power from blast-furnace gases,' in which he suggested the diversion and cleaning of the whole of the waste gases coming from the blast-furnace and their utilization for power-production, so as to obtain, with proper manipulation, from 4 to 6 times the efficiency of present methods. He suggested also the heating of the stoves with producer-gas of a higher and therefore more suitable calorific value, so as to maintain them in a constant state of maximum efficiency, free from dust, and to avoid the irregular working of the furnace, besides obtaining a maximum supply of air-blast, of 15 or even 20 lb. pressure, by means of internal-conibustion blast-engines driven by the cleaned waste furnace-gases, with a surplus of gas left for other uses. Since that time, in view of the necessity of having a stand-by plant, immediately available, in case of strikes or other reasons causing the banking or blowing-out of the blast-furnace, he has developed, as an addition to his other types of producer, a high blast-pressure gas-generator, producing a gas identical with, or somewhat superior to, blast-furnace gas; and in which all the ash of the fuel is turned into fluid slag, which is available for, the production of slagwool. The gas is a little richer in carbon monoxide than average blast-furnace waste gas, and has only from 1 to 3 per cent. of hydrogen. To expediate the transfer of technology from Bureau laboratories into new products and processes that enhance the economic competitiveness of the U.S. mining and minerals industry in world markets. Background The U.S. Bureau of Mines and various members of the industry are concerned about the current technology challenge to the minerals industry in the United States. They arc working together to delineate ways of enhancing the mineral industry's technology base. More emphasis is being placed on collaboration between the government, academia, and industry to formulate the innovative revolutions needed to maintain our technology edge. Through these partnerships, real issues and problems can be identified, the industry's needs as customers can be defined, and research and development activities can be tailored to meet these needs. Now is an especially exciting time in research because some special opportunities exist to encourage private industry to capitalize on Federal laboratory research and development. These opportunities arc called CRADA's. What Is A CRADA? The Congress recently enacted a mechanism that enhances collaboration between industry and government through the Technology Transfer Act of 1986. A key lea lure of this Act is a provision through which Cooperative Research and Development Agreements or CRADA's can be developed to encourage industry and government to work together and stretch their research budgets. By entering into a CRADA, a private, non-Federal company can cost-effectively perform research by sharing the costs of this research with the Federal Government. The agree¬ment involves no transfer of funds from the Government. The Government agrees to provide personnel, services, facilities, equipment or other resources (but nut funds) and the non-Federal party agrees to provide funds, personnel, services, facilities, equipment, or other resources needed to conduct a specific research or development effort.

In April, 1873, No. 2 furnace at the Glendon Iron Works being out of blast, it was decided to alter it from an open to a closed top. The three side flues, through which a part of the gas was formerly taken off, were 15 feet below the top, and as, for various reasons, it was not convenient to cut new flues through the brickwork at the top, as is commonly done with closed-top furnaces, a modification of Coingt's charger was employed. This apparatus, as figured by De Vathaire,* consists of a cup or hopper, like that used with the cup and cone, and a central pipe for taking off the gas, which descends some distance into the furnace, and has a projection around it forming a seat for a ring of a triangular cross-section, which closes the opening between the cup and the central gas-pipe. The charge is put into the cup, and by lowering the ring, is thrown into the furnace, a part going outside of the ring toward the walls, and a part through the inside toward the gas-pipe. In this form the apparatus was not applicable, for: 1st. With a gas-pipe three feet in diameter, in a top eight feet in diameter, the openings left by lowering the ring would not be large enough to let lump coal pass through. 2d. For the charger to shut tight, the ring must bear equally against the projection made for it on the gas-pipe, and against the edge of the cup. This would not be difficult to effect when the apparatus is first put up, but a comparatively small change in the relative position of the parts, such as is almost certain to occur from expansion, would cause the ring to touch the pipe or the cup, whichever happened to be the lower, first, and leave a leak between it (the ring) and the other. In the plan adopted (Figs. 5 and 6, Plate I), the central opening in the ring is closed by the bottom of the gas-pipe, whereby more room is left for the passage of the stock when the charger is open, than if the pipe descended into the furnace; and the pipe, instead of being rigidly supported, rests on the ring, when the charger is closed, and follows it for two or three inches as it opens, until stopped by the counter-balance lever C. When the ring is raised to close the furnace top, it comes in contact first with the bottom edge of the gas-pipe, then both are raised together, until stopped by the ring touching the edge of the cup. In this way a good joint is made at both places.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.

"400 cubic foot Agitair Flotation Cells are in use at Sherritt Gordon's Fox and Ruttan Mine Cu-Zn concentrators. The 4 impeller model No. 120, used at the Fox Mine Operation, appears to offer superior agitation and aeration qualities compared to the single impeller model 120A, in use at Ruttan. The advantages of the model 120 are most significant with ores of high specific gravity and coarse grind.IntroductionSherritt is using 400 cubic foot Agitair flotation machines at both the Fox and Ruttan Mine Concentrators.At the 3000 tpd, Cu-Zn Fox concentrator, 18 model 120 machines have been in operation since May, 1969.The 10000 tpd, Cu-Zn operation at Ruttan utilizes 49 model 120A machines. The plant started operation in May, 1973.The 4-impeller model 120 flotation cell has been marketed by Galigher since the early 1960's but the single impeller model 120A is relatively new.Model 120 Agitair -Cell DataThe Model 120 (Dwg. 1) has floor dimensions of 101 x 10' and a lip height of 2~ to 4 feet to provide up to 400 cubic feet of volume. This machine is shown with a froth crowder and stabilizer plates which are optional.Each motor drives two agitators. 20 HP is recommended by Galigher but 25 HP is more realistic with massive sulphides. The SG of ?ox ore is about 3. 6.The Model 120 can handle up to 600 cubic feet of air per cell at 2 psig which requires 5-6 HP at the blowers. Air volume to each impeller is controlled by a valve from a main header.During the first 3 years of operation at Fox there were few mechanical problems with the 120's."

John Birkinbine, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Sperry's paper is certainly a valuable addition to the literature upon alloys with iron, supplementing the data already published concerning the influence of manganese, chromium, tungsten, titanium, aluminium, etc.; and it is to be hoped that the presentation of information upon the influences of nickel may bring out comparisons with other alloys. Taking into consideration the properties of nickel, and its use as an alloy in heavy forgings, as set forth in the paper, there would appear to be no serious difficulties in utilizing this alloy by extending its application to pieces of more moderate size. The melting-temperature of nickel, as stated by Mr. Sperry, is considerably lower than those given by various authorities. Its point of fusion being so near that of iron, and its density but little greater, the difficulty of alloying it in the foundry should not be serious, particularly if it is applied as a ferro-nickel. The addition of nickel monoxide (NiO) to molten steel would appear to be less desirable than the application of metallic, nickel or of ferro-nickel, if such is produced on a commercial scale and at a satisfactory price.

The potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corp. is about 18 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in sec 1 and 12, T 22 S, R 29 E, N.M.P.M. Potash is produced from two zones in the Salado formation of late Permian age. The lower zone, consisting of a mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), lies at a depth of about 900 ft, and the upper zone, in which the principal potassium mineral is langbeinite (K2S04.2MgS0d), lies at a depth of about 800 ft. Because of the plastic nature of the material, fractures in the Salado formation are extremely rare and have been noted only on the 800 ft level of the International mine. The open fracture described below is almost unique. Only one other open fracture has been noted, and it was on a working face in the same general area as the one described, but was destroyed before the writer had a chance to examine it. According to J. E. Tong, foreman on the 800 level, this fracture was similar to, but smaller than, the one herein described.

Before the War Department, in 1853, sent out the Pacific railroad exploring parties, Fremont had already made his memorable expeditions, exploring the Great Basin and the passes into California; Sitgreaves had traversed, from east to west, the Zuni and Moqui country; and, still later, Emory had examined the region along the boundary-line between the United States and Mexico. The services of these pioneers deserve to be mentioned in even an outline of the history of continental development. Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to address this yearÆs New Zealand Minerals Conference.   As you have already heard from the Associate Minister of Energy, the Government believes that the minerals industry is an important part of our economy. In particular, our coal and lignite resources have the potential to play an important role in New ZealandÆs energy sector as both a primary fuel and as a means to produce electricity.   The Government has taken a keen interest in the primary fuel sector given the declining reserves of natural gas sector. The energy sector is a key driver of economic growth and it is therefore critical that we have a reliable supply of primary fuel as part of the energy mix.   In a global sense, New Zealand is like many other countries regarding the need to secure energy for the future. Natural gas will be a key bridging fuel in the transition from an energy market based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables over the next century.   However, natural gas as a solution to this energy transition has some pragmatic limitations for New Zealand. There is uncertainty as to when new domestic reserves of gas can be discovered and developed. And the alternative of imported LNG poses a number of costs and risks to the economy.   New ZealandÆs coal resources are vast-estimated to be enough to last hundreds of years at the current rate of extraction. The main question is can extraction be increased and sustained to meet the demand of domestic power producers and at the same time meet commitments to lucrative international markets?   At this point it is appropriate for me to place coal into context with Governments overarching policy objectives for energy. The Government has stated objectives for the energy sector emphasising energy efficiency and an increased focus of renewable energy, while still ensuring security of supply and certainty as to energy costs and risk. Coal certainly can make a contribution to these objectives going forward.

The quantity of post-consumer ‘waste’ materials generated each year is rapidly increasing. These materials can contain significant quantities of critical metals and present an environmental challenge if landfilled. The ISACYCLE™ technology is a proven solution for the processing of these materials. In the ISACYCLE™ furnace, the post-consumer materials are processed to recover energy along with any contained critical metals, in the form of a base metal alloy or matte. In addition, a clean aggregate (slag) is generated, which has the potential to be used for a range of applications in the construction industry. This slag is commonly based on a fayalite slag but is modified to manage the complex feed. This paper will review the fayalite slag system and the theoretical modifications required for treating urban wastes. Slags from an ISACYCLE™ furnace processing urban wastes have been sampled and characterised. The chemistry of these samples will be reviewed and compared to the expected theoretical modifications required.

This article describes three practical applications of the Hill of Value (HoV) methodology within different stages of strategic planning for open-pit mining operations and projects. In the pursuit of optimal mine planning, this study establishes a comprehensive case study during the (i)design phase, by refining key parameters for efficient decisionmaking. (ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.
