AN extensive study of German underground manufacturing experience is being undertaken by the Air Materiel Command. Headquarters officials consider completely underground facilities one of the most effective means of protecting aircraft production against air attacks of the strength and type employed in World War II. Advantages accruing to underground manufacturing installations other than protection are, perhaps, a smaller maintenance problem and the possibility of using gravity flow on some production lines. Offsetting these advantages are the high cost of construction, problems of ventilation, and poor acoustics. Excavation costs might well be less than the cost of enclosing the same area on the surface, as new and better methods of rock drilling and transportation are developed. Certainly the amount of building materials used would be far less than in constructing a surface plant of the same dimensions. THE time has arrived in our national development when we must have- a definite national- program in the development of our great engineering problems. Our rail and water transport, our water supplies for irrigation, our reclamation, the provision of future' fuel resources, the development and distribution of electrical power, all 'cry out for some broad-visioned national guidance. We must create a national engineering sense of provision for the nation as a whole. If we are to develop this national sense of engineering wand its relations to our great human problems, it must receive the advocacy of such institutions as this. We, together with our sister engineering societies, represent the engineers of the United States. It is our duty as citizens to give voice to those critical matters of national policy which our daily contact with this, the fundamentally constructive profession, illuminates to us. Just as our medical associations voice the necessity of -safeguards to national health; as the bar associations of safeguards to our judiciary, so the engineers should exert themselves in our national engineering policies. We have none; but we need some, or the next generation will face a lower instead of a higher standard of living than ours.

PRODUCERS of building stone have had to seek new and attractive uses for their output to supplement the diminished orders for standard products. Lunar is the direct result of the need of new outlets for marble and is. probably the most ingenious and attractive type to reach the market in a quarter of a century. It is a highly translucent stone which retains the same glistening sparkle in transmitted light that marble exhibits by incident rays. This sparkle sets it apart entirely from translucencies made of glass or even onyx, alabaster, and the distinctive exceedingly fine textured calcite marbles produced in Alabama and quarried formerly in northern Vermont and Quebec.

ALTHOUGH the American petroleum industry was affected by the Second World War from its early beginning it was not until Dec. 7, 1941- that the industry was placed on full war footing. Even throughout most of 1942 the American overseas operations were limited and not until late in the year did expansion of military activities, more particularly the offensive in North Africa, affect the domestic supplies to such an extent that critical deficiencies developed locally in this country, particularly along the East Coast. The definite outlook for greatly expanded offensive operations by the United States on both Atlantic and Pacific fronts makes certain that during 1943 the domestic situation will. not be alleviated; rather it may become even more critical even though additional transportation facilities, now being built and planned. will be completed from the southwestern producing states to the East Coast.

In preparing the Steep Rock Lake iron ore body for mining, it was necessary to drain Steep Rock Lake. Using diamond drills, a cut 1800 ft long, 100 ft wide, and maximum depth of 95 ft amounting to 300,000 cu yd of material, was excavated in Greenstone to provide a drainage channel. This was done under the general contractor C. A. Pitts, of Toronto, who in turn employed a diamond drill contractor, Boyles Bros., to do the drilling. The method of excavation was selected be- cause a clean square cut and grade could be maintained in the bottom of the channel. Bootlegged holes would have left blocks of rock in the corners which would have created a situation which would have become progressively worse as the open cut advanced from one side of the ridge to the other.

For the first time we are able to publish the official itinerary for the forth-coming Mexico City meeting of 1936. As shown on Page 351, the deluxe special train leaves St. Louis on Thursday. Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m., returning to St. Louis on Nov. 18 at 8:15 a. m. The schedule provides seven days and six nights in Mexico City with numerous excursions to nearby towns and resorts. The oldest surviving city in' North America is Mexico City, dating back at least to the twelfth century. It was the Aztec capital when Cortez arrived in 1519. The famous cathedral still standing was built on a foundation of sculptured Indian images and the remains of a great Aztec temple. Today it is a city of romance.

NO ADEQUATE salary scale, at the present time, can ignore the increase in the cost of commodities 'during the last few years or- afford to assume that this increase is merely temporary. A study of the change in prices and wages during and after the Civil War is of interest in connection with changes that have taken place from 1913 to 1919. The curves on the accompanying figure, based on reports of the War Industries Board and Department of Labor, show these changes. During the Civil War retail prices rose to 164,2 per cent. of the prices of 1860, during the next 8' or 10 years. It is interesting to note that the rise in wages during the Civil War was almost simultaneous with the rise in the prices of commodities. During the World, War, the rise in wages has lagged about a year behind the rise in prices. Furthermore, in the period immediately, following the Civil War, wages continued to rise after prices started to fall, The present price level is not considered merely temporary by such of our Government agencies as the Department of Labor and the Federal Reserve Board or by such economists as Irving Fisher' and J. THE need for coordinated effort on public problem by engineers has long been felt. Early in June there will assemble in Washington a conference composed of delegates from all the engineering organizations in the country. The call for this conference is issued by the Joint Conference , Committee of the four national societies as the completion of its work on the organization of a congress composed of delegates representing all the engineering organizations of the United States. The plan for this confederation was presented at a joint meeting of the administrative boards of the national founder societies on Jan. 23, 1920; and was unanimously approved in principle by that meeting. The work of the committee since that date has consisted in drafting a constitution of the organization to be presented at the conference for discussion and, after such amendments as may be adopted, acceptance.

Six tests were made by the Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines on a sample of black sand delivered to the station by Messrs. James, Eagan & Griffen from Fairbanks Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska, to devise a method of recovering the gold content. More than 90 per cent of this black sand consisted of magnetite and garnet which can be separated magnetically. The Station has no equipment for magnetic separation other than an electromagnet similar to the one used by Day and Richards, (Day, D.T., and Richards, R.H., Investigations of Black Sands from Placer Mines, U. S. Geol. Survey, Bull. 285, 1906, pp. 150-163), which can only be used satisfactorily on small samples. To treat the entire lot of black sand with this machine would have been impracticable. Therefore only a small part of the sand was so treated, the rest being divided into five lots in order to obtain comparative results from other methods of treatment.

Recent advances in computing, rendering and display technologies have generated increased accessibility to virtual reality. Virtual reality allows for the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations and test conditions and to visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a virtual-reality framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine, including mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

Hydrometallurgical processes are needed to extract nickel (Ni) when it is disseminated in mineral matrix. High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) and atmospheric acid leaching (AAL) are alternatives, and AAL has the advantage of requiring mild temperatures and pressure. Reducing-reagent tests improved the extraction of metals for the specific limiting portion of the ore. Low dosage of sodium thiosulfate presented better selectivity and safer operating conditions, allowing metal extractions of 50–62 percent at 95 °C. However, the low extraction rate obtained for Ni and the similar levels of impurities — magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co) and iron (Fe) — extracted may represent economical and technological challenges in the downstream process.

O desejo era reduzir a quantidade de bobinas removidas no momento do carregamento, pois quando se reduz esse o manuseio interno, reduz-se o tempo do embarque e consequentemente agiliza o recebimento de bobinas no entreposto. Várias outras melhorias de infraestruturas e gestão de pessoas e equipamentos foram necessárias para que o objetivo final fosse alcançado. Objetivo esse que se resume em reduzir paradas dos equipamentos de Preparação de Bobinas à Quente para aumentar a velocidade de embarque.

(Communication to the Secretary): Having spent considerable time in a systematic study of this field,'both as regards the details of its structure and stratigraphy and the broader question of its relation to the Appalachian basin, I wish to add a word concerning the correlations made by Mr. Hodge in his paper. From A commercial standpoint, the question of correlation, even along the strike, is of little or no importance, for the variability is such that each opening should be tested individually, regardless of the horizon at which it appears; but these correlations assume an entirely different aspect when their scientific bearing is considered; they then become of vital importance, and, before being accepted, should be subjected to the most rigid scrutiny and severe tests. Mr. Hedge states positively that the Imboden seam of coal is equivalent to the Elkhorn coal of Pike and Letcher counties, Kentucky. In the writer's opinion, such equivalency is, at the utmost, only a possibility. This correlation has been generally adopted by the geologists of the Kentucky Geological Survey, but the writer has been unable to find on what grounds they base the statement. The evidence of identity seems to be in the character of the coal, as both seams furnish fine coking coal; also, in the similarity of the interval between them aid the " Bee Rock," or top of the great conglomerate. It is probably an easy matter to determine the thickness of this interval on Elkhorn creek, and we will assume that the measure of 300 to 350 feet is correct. In the Big Stone Gap field, the question of measuring the interval between the Imboden and the " Bee Rock " is exceedingly difficult. The line of outcrop of this mass of strata is along the northern base of Stone mountain, and, in the uprising of the great arch, the strata on its flanks have been thrown into many minor folds, and, in places, have been broken by local faults. This complicated structure, together with the absence of ally well-marked stratum, renders it exceedingly difficult to obtain a correct measure of the intervening sandstones and shales. (communication to the Secretary*):—In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for 1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the market for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908' does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause.
