THE primary objective in laying track in panel sections is to reduce the number of track laborers required. This is possible because the work is mechanized. Moreover, because the work is mechanized and each of the operations needs only a few men, and each is self-contained, the work can be carried on at night as well as in daylight; therefore, the method provides a means of preparing tracks on more than one shift. The laying of tracks in open pits and quarries in panel sections is not new but new methods have been made possible by the introduction of new types of equipment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods that are followed in' the Morenci open pit. GENERAL MINING OPERATIONS Full-scale ore production at Morenci is about 50,000 tons daily. The normal yearly output of ore and waste is 32,000,000 tons, of which 30,000,000 tons is handled by rail haulage. This requires the building of approximately 47 miles of loading and other temporary tracks during a 12 months' period (Fig I). Broken ore and waste, is loaded., into 90-ton capacity dump cars with 5-cu-yd full-revolving electric shovels. Shovel banks are uniformly 50 ft high:. They are blasted- with churn drill holes, and the broken material from a blast is loaded out with two shovel cuts, the first one being called (locally) the "splatter" cut and the second one the "clean-up" or "face-up" cut. When a shovel is making its clean-up cut, the loading track is about 70 ft from the toe of the bank and, under normal conditions, a bank is blasted against it without removing the track. It is thus evident that each track is used for two shovel cuts before relocation is necessary, inasmuch as a single position serves for both the clean-up cut prior to blasting and for the splatter cut following the blast. The normal advance of a solid bench by a single blast is 40 ft (Fig 2). PREPARATION OF PANEL GRADE In preparation of panel grades bulldozers and rooters are used for the bulk of the work and an auto-patrol road grader for the final stage. At Morenci, bulldozers have always been used for track-grade preparation, but before the introduction of the other two types of equipment grades were uneven and irregular at best, and always necessitated a big gang of track laborers to hand-block under the ties with rocks after a track was laid into place. High blocking also made poor track because of instability and caused frequent derailments. Under these conditions derailments were generally bad as re-railing became difficult. Much track was torn up and many ties broken in the process. The inadequacy of the hand-blocked track, together with the inefficiency of hand blocking, constantly pointed to the desirability of reducing the amount of labor required, so various means were tried to improve conditions, such as wood

23.1-SOURCE, POWER-SYSTEM ELEMENTS A. J. T HUM Basic considerations in providing power for mine production and collateral operations are: 1. Mining operations of any size normally use electric motors for driving all equipment except mobile service units. 2. The electricity for power may be purchased or self-generated, depending on the location, size and specific operating circumstances of the individual property. 3. The major elements of the power system will be the source, either an incoming transmission line from a utility in the case of purchased power or the power plant if self-generated. Energy for the power plant may be water, hydrocarbon fuels, waste heat or nuclear, which will govern the type of prime mover selected. 4. The electricity normally is generated in the form of alternating current and must be distributed to the points of usage. This usually requires a primary substation for transformation to suitable voltages and secondary substations at points of usage throughout the operations, The power is delivered from the primary to the secondary substations over transmission lines or cables, depending on distances, voltages and local conditions. 5. At the points of use, there will be starting and protective devices for each motor. In some instances, direct current will be needed and rectifiers of various types can be used to provide it. 6. The entire electrical system requires suitable switching and protective devices to prevent damage to the equipment in case of power failues or faults; also, in most cases, sufficient metering to establish the demand and amount of electrical energy consumed. 23.2-PURCHASED POWER A. J. THULI 1. Where public-utility or government-generated power is available, it usually is advantageous for the mine owner to purchase rather than generate. Purchased power generally will be cheaper and more reliable than operating a small generating plant except in some cases where waste heat is available as the source of energy and can be used to supply all or a portion of the power requirements. 2. If it is decided to purchase power, the owner usually must participate in the cost of constructing the connecting line from the closest existing utility line to his point of usage. If the connected load is less than 1,000 lip, it probably is best to let the utility provide the primary substation. For larger connected loads the owner can obtain a more favorable "primary voltage" rate if he provides the primary substation to receive the incoming power and transform it to the distributing and usage voltages. 3. The cost of purchased power usually is made up of a demand charge, deter¬mined by the maximum amount of power the customer takes during any 15-min period throughout a month, and a graduated energy charge for the kilowatt-hours consumed-that is, so much for the first block of energy based on the demand,

18.1-RAILROAD JOHN W. BRAUNS Conventional railroad haulage can be employed at both open-pit or strip and underground mines-in the latter case, largely for transfer of ore from distant openings to processing plants, or processed material to loading points or docks, using standard hopper cars for bottom unloading or gondolas for rotary dumping. The major application, however, is in surface mining for moving ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Consequently, the following will deal largely with this phase of railroad operation, though the conclusions apply equally, for the most part, to other rail-type surface haulage. In surface mining, trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump cars suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondolas are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required. Side-dump cars are more versatile, carrying both ore and waste, but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain.' Also they weigh up to twice a flat-bottom car of the same capacity and. therefore, fewer" cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gage track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate low-quality temporary track where moves are frequent and permanent high-quality track on main lines. Rail haulage can be used alone, or in combination with other surface haulage methods, thus permitting a selection best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 18.1.1---GENERAL APPLICABILITY, CONTROLLING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled.' The ideal applica¬tion is in a large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported over 3 mi. If. in addition, a high production rate is to he maintained, railroad haulage probably will afford a lower cost per ton transported. Grade must he relatively gentle-usually 3% uphill and 4% downhill. The greater the differences in elevation involved, the greater are the track grade space requirements; for example, a 3 c ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep is almost 2 mi long. Main-line track locations should he selected carefully so that the number of moves during the life of the mining operation can he kept to a minimum. This applies both to the ore haulageway and that for waste. Such moves are not only expensive, but are difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semipermanent trackage. Figs. 18-1 and 18-2 illustrate typical track layouts. The effect of terrain in considering railroad haulage is confined chiefly to the initial cost of the installation. Grade construction in mountainous territory is ap¬preciably more expensive. However, if that expense can be borne, the subsequent maintenance cost of trackage will not he much higher than in areas of low relief.

THE art of metallography is mature and the forms in which various micro-constituents appear are well known. Investigations almost without end have disclosed the importance of the exact manner of distribution of phases on the physical properties and usefulness of an alloy. Surprisingly, however, relatively little attention has been paid to the forces that are responsible for the particular and varied spatial arrangements of grains and phases that are observed. Like the anatomist, the metallurgist has been more concerned with form and function than with origins. In this paper it is proposed to develop the simple concept that many microstructures result from an attempted approach to equilibrium between phase and grain interfaces whose surface tensions geometrically balance each other at the points and along the lines where they meet. From this follows a number of principles which may prove to be of interest to the metallographer and of practical use in explaining failures and in designing alloys for particular service. In general, the discussion will be limited to structures obtained after full annealing. The simple principles do not apply to structures resulting from Widmanstatten mechanisms in precipitation, or to other structures not in local equilibrium and in which lattice coherency is a determining factor. INTERFACIAL TENSION Much has been written by physical chemists about the free energy of surfaces, which manifests itself as a measurable surface tension. Two- and three-phase interfaces in fluids seek a condition of minimum energy and approach a geometrical configuration in which the various forces are in vectorial balance.* Measurement of the angles established between the interfaces when in equilibrium provides a quantitative value for the relative value of the surface forces involved. The case of two fluids meeting at the surface of a solid (of great importance in connection with the flotation of minerals) has often been studied, but there have been few investigations of the equally definite interface between two or more crystals of a single solid phase, or the more complex cases where crystal grains of more than one phase are involved. The principles are best illustrated by considering first the case of two and three immiscible liquids. If, as in Fig I, a liquid, 2, is dropped into a less dense liquid, I, it will form a sphere-if gravity and viscosity can be ignored-for in this shape the interface has the smallest possible area. If these two phases should together encounter a third phase in which they are both immiscible, the geometry will change to become that which gives the lowest total energy for all three interfaces. The future exploitation of crust deposits will require a dependable characterization system. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau) initiated research to develop a new sampling dredge by conducting a series of cutting and physical property tests on previously collected cobalt-rich manganese crust and substrate samples. Using the engineering parameters derived from these tests, a large, heavy dredge was designed and tested. This heavy dredge was capable of fragmenting and collecting in situ crust, but it created handling problems for the research vessel, thus an aggressive cutting, light-weight dredge was conceived and fabricated. The light-weight dredge is capable of fragmenting and collecting crust and some talus. This dredge can be used on flat or rough seabed terrains. It can be easily retrieved from hang ups and reset to sample again.

Demand by precious metals explorationists for cost effective means to target subsurface geologic structures worthy of evaluation by means of drilling has led to the use of the predictor-correlator technique. To locate polarizable targets, the predictor-a localized inhomogeneity in electrical properties-is placed at various locations in the computer-simulated subsurface region, and correlated with the potential distribution observed in the field. The correlation coefficient obtained is assigned to the subsurface location. IP targets are extracted by calculating a second correlation section based on higher-frequency illumination and subtracting it from the first. The locations of correlation difference correspond to the locations of polarizable mineralization.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin trend comprises over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 50 million ounces of gold (Fig. 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are four major deposits; Post, Betze, Bluestar, and Genesis, plus numerous smaller deposits (Fig. 2). Betze is located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines; Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property; and Post on both Barrick and Newmont property.

The Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) has been an advocate for the U.S. mining industry since 1895. For several decades, the organization has represented mining members located mostly in the Northwest and some southwestern Canadian provinces. Today, though, the NWMA?s membership is located in 42 states and seven provinces and has become a national voice for the mining industry. So, during the association?s 119th and final meeting as the NWMA, a name change was announced. The organization is now called the American Exploration and Mining Association (AEMA). But that?s not all that has changed, according to the association. The new name reflects more closely the diversity and location of the AEMA?s membership. It will still be an advocate for the mining industry, dealing with land, environmental and community issues on state and federal levels. The conference, held in December 2013 in Reno, NV, attracted about 2,500 attendees. And the accompanying exhibit included 230 equipment and service suppliers in 246 booths. Technical programming ran the gamut of mining industry issues and technologies, including surface and underground mining; high technology systems and automation in mining, metallurgy and exploration; along with social issues, finance and safety. The following is a sample of some of the sessions.

The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. "Early efforts to develop formal reporting systems to quantify and classify mineral deposits date back over 100 years. (e.g. Hoover 1909: “Proved, Probable, Prospective Ore”). This was at first driven by mine operators’ need for reliable estimates of what their mines could produce. Disruption of transportation routes by world wars prompted western governments to recognize the need for assessments of strategic sources of metals and minerals that could support domestic industry during times of crisis. Categories were created to quantify mineral potential which were additional to those of mine reserves. Terms such as hypothetical and undiscovered resources entered the lexicon. Capital markets serving the mining industry were traumatized during the latter part of the 20th century by undisciplined and fraudulent disclosure by exploration companies of mineral deposit potential. Government securities regulators pressed for the development of credible reporting codes (e.g. SEC Industry Guide 7: 1981; JORC 1989; SAMREC 1994, CIM 2000). Representative organizations from the major western mining countries generally agreed that there should only be three categories of mineral resources (measured, indicated, and inferred) and two categories of mineral reserves (proven and probable). This was formalized in 1997 with the “Denver Accord”. Acceptance of the standard terminology may have been the easy part, because the challenge for the 21st century is to get general industry acceptance and agreement of the principles behind the definitions of each category. There has been noticeable movement towards this objective in the last few years. This is reflected in part in the updated reporting codes by JORC 2004, CIM 2005; SAMREC 2007; SME 2007; and PERC 2008, and the development of the CRIRSCO International Reporting Template 2007."

IN the biographical notice of Thomas F. Witherbee, published in Bulletin No. 32, August, 1909 (p. xxv), it is said that ". he is believed to have been the first manager in America to use the chemical laboratory for the purpose of controlling the regular running of the blast-furnace." Since the year is not given, I cannot decide as. to Mr. Witherbee's priority; but the statement leads me to contribute a bit of history, showing an early departure from the "rule-of-thumb " blast-furnace work to the employment of a chemist. In the autumn of 1868 the department of mining and metallurgy was established at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In connection with the assay-department a laboratory was equipped for making general commercial analyses. In January, 1869, Alexander L. Holley, the manager and builder of the Bessemer plant at the Rensselaer Works of John A. Griswold & Co., the first plant erected in the United¬States under the Bessemer patents, began to send me samples of ore, pig-iron, and steel for analysis. Early in 1869 I was regularly retained as chemist for the Rensselaer Works; and while the laboratory was not located at the works, for all practical purposes it was the works-laboratory. The increase in work soon made it necessary for me to secure an assistant. I applied to Prof. Charles F. Chandler, who recommended Dr. August Wendel, who had been an assistant of Rammelsberg and had lately landed in New York. Dr. Wendel remained with me until 1873, when I left Troy. My leaving made necessary the erection of a laboratory at the Rensselaer Works, which, was done under my supervision, and Dr. Wendel was employed as chemist. "INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5 results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June 1929 to July 193C in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston. Mass., and during 1931 in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and to develop methods of eliminating these hazards. These investigations have demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.The investigation carried out during 1932 has been along lines similar to those conducted during 1929, 1930, and 1931 test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and the other an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., was continuously employed during the year in the testing of gases in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigations, all tests were numbered. The test-data sheets, on which the information regarding the tests was recorded, were prepared in triplicate, ono copy going to the Edison Co., one to the gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. These test-data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record of each manhole tested was immediately available. A typical test-data sheet was given in the 1931 report. These data sheets were found to entirely satisfactory and no changes were made during the 1932 investigation. The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres, shipment of the samples to Pittsburgh, and method of analysis has been the same as that described in the 1931 report and need not be repeated here. Likewise, there has been no change in the method of calculation of explosibility of the samples analyzed or the use of charcoal filter tests given in appendix A."

HENRY MARION HOWE, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: "Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up-by masses of graphite . . . " Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in 1900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on 'The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro- structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor struc- tural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not.
