"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYIn connection with a program of research work on coal at its Southern Experiment Station, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, conducts washability studies of samples of coal from coal fields in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits of coal occur. The first such study on coal from a bed in the Arkansas field has been completed, and the results are presented in this report.One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield a good grade of coking coal with a minimum of losses of coal in the rejects.The coal on which this report is based was obtained by underground and tipple sampling at the quality mine of the Quality Excelsior Coal Co. about 3 miles east of Hackett, Ark. This mine operates in the Upper Hartshorne bed, which, as the main source of coal in what is known as the Hackett-Excelsior district, yields an excellent grade of low-volatile coking coal, which is marketed at steel plants in Colorado and California. Production from this bed by the major producers in the Hackett Excelsior district was at the rate of about 125,760 tons annually in 1949, according to the Keystone Coal Buyers Manual. 2/In the laboratory, the tipple sample was crushed to 6-inch top size and screened on a 2-inch round-hole screen. The 2-inch to 0 undersize, amounting to 71.4 percent of the total sample, was fractionated into a series of screen sizes and float-and-sink products to get data for determining the washability characteristics of the coal. Before the screening and float-and-sink tests were made, however, machine cuttings, which are now gobbed underground, were added to the 2-inch to 0 sample. Enough of these cuttings were added so that the resulting mixture was considered representative of what the 2-inch to 0 run-of-mine coal would be if all machine cuttings, including the part now being gobbed, were brought to the tipple as a part of the run-of-mine coal.The mixture obtained referred to in this report as the run-of-mine or raw coal."

INTRODUCTION Lesotho is a mountainous area of southern Africa from which water is to be exported in an extensive tunnel system, to industrial regions inland. The related tunnelling project has involved a num- ber of drives using tunnel boring machines [TBMs] to excavate about 100 km of 5 m diameter water tunnels [von Glehn and Bluhm, 1995). This paper describes the ventilation and cooling of some of the tunnel drives from both the operational and design points-of-view with a particular focus on heat generation. There were many common features in all of the drives but this paper is focused mainly on the Hlotse drive which was 18,4 km long. The drives were ventilated using forced ventilation systems to provide appropriate air flow throughout the tunnels and face zones. In addition, the Hlotse drive required refrigeration equip- ment which provided chilled water to the tunnel. While the sec- ondary ventilation systems play an important role in gas and dust handling, the paper concentrates on the primary ventilation and cooling issues. The ventilation of these tunnels was an exacting exercise be- cause: • Rock temperatures and geothermal heat flow were high. • TBMs with relatively high power ratings were used. • Diesel locomotives were used. • Drives were relatively long. • High altitude meant a low air density. An important feature was the simulation and monitoring of the ventilation and heat flow components and the project was characterised by analysis, monitoring and ongoing tactical decision-making throughout the progress. The thermodynamics of the systems were complex because there were many interactive effects and analyses were carried out using special computer pro- grams. The monitoring confirmed the accuracy of the models, and in this manner it was possible to confidently ensure healthy and safe working conditions and still minimise costs. Local ambient climate conditions range from temperatures higher than 35 "C in summer to below -10 OC in winter. Based on available statistical data and the thermal storage/damping effects in the system, design summer ambient conditions were taken as 15 OC/25 "C wet-bulb/dry-bulb. The barometric pressure was 80 kPa and due to the altitude, the ambient air density was only 0,9 kg/m3. The local Authority specified a maximum in-tunnel wet- bulb temperature [at any point] of 32,O OC and a mean wet-bulb temperature [from all locations] of 27,5 OC maximum. The maxi- mum height of ground cover above the tunnel was 1 200 m and the maximum virgin rock temperature was 41 OC; see Figure 1. Diesel dilution criteria specified by the local Authority was a minimum of 0.1 m3/s per rated kW of diesel engine. Other requirements related to gases such as CO, CO2, NOx and CH4 [and the need for intrinsically safe equipment] but these are not of direct relevance to this paper. The actual average face advance was about 30 m/d with good days achieving 60 m/d and good months achieving 1 000 m [23 working days]. The original design tunnelling rate was 50 m/d. DESCRIPTION OF HLOTSE DRIVE VENTILATION AND COOLING SYSTEM The ventilation requirements in the tunnels were dictated by heat and diesel dilution needs. The best ventilation and cooling policy is generally a balance between using increased quantities of fresh air or refrigeration [or both]. In this particular scenario it turned out that, since the diesel emission criteria required large quantities of air, the refrigeration needs were modest. The drive was ventilated using a ducted, forced ventilation system from fans located at the portal. The maximum ventilation requirement was 51 m3/s when the drive was at 18.4 km. From a heat flow point of view, the worst scenario was a heat load of 3.5 MW when the drive was at 7 km. This was cooled by the ventilation air and a supply of chilled water to the tunnel. Refrigeration and chilled water system In the design phase, a detailed comparison was carried out between two general alternatives for providing refrigeration. First, was a system in which refrigeration sets and air coolers are installed on the TBM train; the refrigeration sets are cooled by condenser water piped to and from cooling towers at the portal. Second, was a system in which refrigeration water chillers are in- stalled at the portal and chilled water is piped into the tunnel. The detailed comparison indicated that the capital and running costs of the second system were at least 60 % lower than the in-tunnel plant. There were also many obvious practical benefits for favouring the portal system. The refrigeration plant supplied 23 11s of cold water at a temperature of 10 OC. After providing the cooling effect in the drive, the water returned to the portal where it was initially cooled in open-circuit evaporative pre-cooling towers, chilled in the refrigeration plant and then returned to the tunnel. The cold water flowed into the tunnel in an insulated supply pipe and returned in an uninsulated pipe; the water was simply circulated to the end of the pipe and returned. The cooling effect in the tunnel was achieved entirely through heat transfer from the pipe [long linear heat exchanger] and no air coils or other heat exchangers were required. The cooling requirements were satisfied by the heat transfer to the returns chilled water steel pipe [200 mm]. The pipes were eventually installed to a maximum distance of 10,8 km in what was considered a very practical and cost effective solution.

A method is developed for improving the low recovery efficiency which results when viscous oils are flooded by water. Viscous oil has been diluted with a lighter liquid miscible in it in any ratio which produces a mixture possessing a reduced viscosity and which is then displaced by water. Light gasoline was used in these tests to reduce the viscosity of the oil in place. Oils possessing viscosities in the range of 1.28 to 324 cp at the test temperature of 30C were displaced from a cylindrical unconsolidated sand core, with a length of 2 m (6.6 ft) and a diameter of 10 cm (3.9 in.) at a flood of 6.27 cc/sq cm/hr. In two test series up to I PV of light gasoline was injected into the core before water flooding. In the first series the recovery of a low-viscosity oil (1.28 cp) increased as the volume of light gasoline was increased. However, only the oil which could not be recovered by water flooding alone could be replaced by the light gasoline. In the other series, the recovery of a more viscous oil (13.5 cp) was not increased even if large quantities of light gasoline were injected. An oil bank built up ahead of the water front so that the flood water met with equivalent saturation conditions, as would be the case in flooding solely with water. However, the recovery of more viscous oils could be increased substantially when the core was first flooded with water, followed by a slug of light gasoline, and then flooded with water again. Furthermore, an oil bank ,built up ahead of the second water front. The formation of this oil bank is particularly favorable for the displacement process; the greater part of the light gasoline injected was pushed out of the core ahead of the oil and recovered. Using a light oil of low viscosity, it was possible to replace only the residual oil that could not be recovered by water flooding by the light gasoline. As the basic study had shown that highly viscous oils could be recovered by flooding first with water, then with light gasoline, followed by a second injection of water, the study was extended by tests made with reservoir fluids and cores taken from the low-gravity oil reservoir of the Wietze field, Germany. A great increase in recovery over flooding with water alone was obtained in these tests. The results may show a way to recover high-viscosity oils by a comparatively simple flooding procedure. INTRODUCTION In fields where oil recovery has not benefited from natural water drive, increased recovery may be obtained by the injection of water into the reservoir, especially in the case of fields which produce high-gravity, low-viscosity oil. There is a rather close relation between the viscosity of the reservoir fluid and the recovery that can be obtained by water flooding. As the viscosity increases the oil recovery decreases proportionately, so that an oil viscosity about 30 times that of water is generally considered to be the upper limit for an economically successful water flood.' This limitation has been recognized theoretically by Buckley and Leverett,' and has been verified by numerous laboratory flooding tests, such as by Croes and Schwarz,V n the viscosity ratio range of oil to water from 1 to 500. The reason for the inferior recovery of viscous oils by water flooding can best be understood by considering the mechanism of flood tests. In such tests water is introduced into one end of a sand-packed tube which is saturated with oil of the viscosity to be tested, and oil is produced from, the other end. Oil, with a viscosity lower than that of water, is pushed ahead of the advancing water with considerable uniformity, and irregularities in the displacement process tend to be eliminated as the oil saturation decreases and the water saturation increases. However, oil recovery is not complete, for the water forms interfaces with the oil and traps residual oil droplets in certain of the pore spaces. These residual oil droplets are distributed rather uniformly through the sand, and they are not susceptible to recovery regardless of the amount of water passed through the test cylinder. In the case of an oil possessing a viscosity greater than that of water, the injected water tends to move irregularly through the sand in the test cylinder. At the place in the sand where initial water movement takes place, resistance to the movement of water is lowered and the water finger so formed will grow perceptibly; it will extend to the outlet end of the test cylinder so that a breakthrough of water takes place long before much of the oil-saturated volume of the sand has come in contact with water. Once the breakthrough of water takes place, the water-oil ratio is gradually approaching the economic limit, even though much of the oil in the test cylinder remains unaffected by water. Disconnected drops of oil are trapped in the portion of the sand that has been invaded by water, just as when an oil of low viscosity is flooded. The poor recovery of the more viscous oils, therefore, is due to the irregularity of water movement through the test cylinder, and the rate of water movement through restricted sections of the oil-saturated sand increases with the more viscous oils. The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss some of the less evident and sometimes neglected opportunities for progressive developments in coal research. While a great deal of both promotional and technical information flows from some areas of coal research, output deficiencies in other areas of activity have reached a magnitude where important developments have been, and will increasingly be, unfavorably affected. These areas mainly involve coal mining and preparation. Some recommendations for the intensification of effort in these areas follow: Coal Mining While a huge tonnage of in-the-ground coal is assured, the location and distribution of these tonnages are becoming less favorable. The easy-to-mine coal which is located in or near population centers has been, or is being, mined. The vigor with which the less accessible reserves are recovered by the mining industry depends largely on the condition of the coal market at the time of mining. Hence, during a buyer's market, the commercially oriented mining industry is compelled to mine the easier and less costly reserves. Conversely, during a seller's market, the need to rapidly expand production results in more difficult mining and higher cost coal as few obstacles are encountered in finding markets. Hence, a seller's market tends to enhance the recovery of reserves while a buyer's market does not. One reason for today's fuel supply problems is that the Nation has recently emerged from a long-term coal buyer's market which lasted from about 1950 to 1968. During that period, national policy caused severe production cutbacks which regretably drove the industry to mining only the more accessible and better quality reserves. Often in order to remain in business, many hundreds of millions of tons of more difficult to mine reserves were abandoned and lost behind caved areas. Many of these reserves are close to population areas and would not have been lost in a more stable economic climate. It is difficult to fully account for all the impacts that were caused by the great buyer's market of the 1950s and 1960s. Besides the obvious loss of reserves that were once considered national wealth, the mining of better reserves tended to produce a generation of technically optimistic mining people. Mining people frequently became accustomed to looking at nothing less than outstanding mining conditions as a result of the declining market. Many are now and have long since received a re-education in the other half of mining. Going from many years of mining accessible, select and easy-to-win reserves, to the crash-driving of development entries in reserves that were considered unworthy of mining during 50s and 60s, frequently results in a much higher rate of encounter with in-seam and out-of-seam rock as well as with coal-deficient areas or "washouts." Intensive entry driving activity and compulsory non-selective mining in sometimes lean reserves were brought on by the need to rapidly open up new supplies of coal. Working under these requirements presents a continuing reminder that much more needs to be known about the relatively esoteric art of planning the best direction for driving entries in order to insure that a more consistent and greater supply of coal is available during early mine development. All of the preceding discussion tends to point to a need for a better estimate of those reserves of coal that are likely to be mined in the future. Such estimates should not be limited to the compilation of the amount of coal in the ground; but, where possible, should also include information concerning the capability for producing this coal. After all, a coal seam of ample thickness may have a degree of thickness variability, undulation, bad roof or floor, so as to make what would otherwise appear to be an attractive mining condition untenable. Underlying the problem involving the feasibility of producing known reserves is the need to develop better methods for the characterization of coal seams and associated lithotypes, based on drill core data, once at area is selected for mining. Reserves and their characterization involve aspects of exploration technology that are frequently considered mature. The resulting technological deficiencies may be the main reason why coal exploration frequently does not end with core drilling of a property, as it should, but extends into the mining operation during the driving of development entries. When exploration is extended to the driving of development entries, the near absence of integrated decision-making theory involving mining, geology, mathematics, and economics becomes, once again, all too painfully apparent and frequently results in very costly rationalizations. Hence, by the formal initiation of a concentrated program to combine the cyclical effects of economics with geology and mining, more relevant estimates of reserve distribution, tonnages, and production capability should be forthcoming. Moreover, a similar formal effort is needed to develop a combination of the most advanced concepts of mathematics, geology, and mining to better "see" coal seams as a means to favorably implement many long-range decisions involving mine safety and productivity. Much more applied research needs to be done on coal mining systems for mining in thin seams and/or under bad roof. Current difficulties in both of these areas at recently opened coal mines should provide a sobering glimpse into the future. Full-scale applied research, sponsored by appropriate federal agencies, is urgently needed on a scheme involving a new combination of established mining and preparation elements. The scheme may include: (1) a continuous mining machine remotely operated by a miner stationed at some distance behind the machine using a cord attached control box; (2) hydraulic transport of coal through pipes from the mining machine to a coarse refuse removal grid, crusher, and then on to portable concentrating equipment; (3) the hydraulic transport of clean coal out of the mine in pipes to the surface for thermal dewatering, if neces-

INTRODUCTION A variety of instruments are available for measuring or monitoring the performance of underground mine-ventilation systems. In general terms, the instruments may be classified as those that measure air velocity and those that measure gaseous concentrations. All costs herein are in terms of 1978 US dollars. The mention of a specific manufacturer or device is not intended to be an endorsement by the US Bureau of Mines. AIR-VELOCITY INSTRUMENTS The basic instruments used for measuring the air velocity in mines are the vane anemometer and the smoke tube. Vane Anemometer Of the air-velocity instruments, the 102-mm (4.0¬in.) vane anemometer is the most common and is available as either a low- or high-speed type. The low-speed anemometer generally is the most suitable for measuring the velocities in ordinary airways. For a rough check of the velocity in an airway, it usually is satisfactory to hold the anemometer by hand, positioning it in the center of the airway for 30 sec. However, the resultant error may be as high as 25% , and such a hand-held approach is unsuitable when accurate or reliable measurements are required. To obtain more accurate measurements, the proper procedure is as follows: 1) Since holding the anemometer by hand generally causes the instrument to read about 15% high, it is mounted on a 0.6-m (2-ft) extension rod. 2) The airway is divided into equal right and left halves. A 1-min traverse is used in each half, moving the anemometer smoothly up and down in a zigzag pattern so that the entire half is covered within the allotted minute. 3) The manufacturer's correction table is applied to the readings to adjust the velocity calculation as necessary. Whenever possible, anemometer readings should be obtained in a long straight section of airway that has a constant cross-sectional area. Bends and obstructions should be avoided, since they cause turbulence and other discontinuities in the airflow and can degrade the accuracy of the velocity measurements. Although a series of velocity measurements at one location usually corresponds to within a few percent, this is not an indication that the airflows calculated from those readings are completely accurate. One reason is that the correction table provided with the instrument generally is not for that specific instrument; instead, it represents the average correction for all such instru¬ments made by the particular manufacturer. Most cor¬rection tables specify a correction factor of from 0 to 15%, depending upon the velocity. However, even after correction, the instrument error still may range from 3 to 5%. At low velocities such as those below 0.76 m/s (150 fpm), the instrument error can be two or three times greater than this, ranging from 6 to 15%. The new ball-bearing anemometers generally perform somewhat better at low velocities than did the older conventional anemometers. Another source of error is introduced when measur¬ing the cross-sectional area of the airway or entry. Under the best of circumstances, measurement errors, instrument errors, and a host of other minor errors all combine to cause a total error of at least 10% in the velocity calculation. The vane anemometer also can be used with reason¬able accuracy to measure airflows in mine-ventilation ducts. In this application, the anemometer is mounted on a rod and is held at the center of the duct end. For a duct that is discharging air, the average velocity in the duct is 85% of the centerline reading (Northover, 1957). For a duct that is taking in air, the average velocity is 70% of the centerline reading (Haney and Hlavsa, 1976). To measure the airflow discharged from a regulator or from a small hole in a stopping or bulk¬head, a correction factor for the area is necessary. A good approach in this situation is to traverse the area of the regulator or hole, holding the anemometer with an extension rod. This provides an average velocity that is multiplied by 85% of the measured area of the regulator or hole. In all cases, the manufacturer's instrument cor¬rection table must be used and applied properly. For accurate results, the anemometer should be returned to the manufacturer for periodic cleaning and checking. If it is in daily use, the anemometer should be returned about once per year, and proportionally less frequently if the usage is less frequent than on a daily basis. Smoke Tube The smoke tube may not appeal to individuals who believe that good measurement results can be obtained only with expensive, complicated, and fragile instru¬mentation. Nevertheless, smoke works about as well as anything for the routine measurement of low air velocities in mines. The following procedure yields reasonably good results: 1) Two marks are scratched 7.6 m (25 ft) apart on the floor of the airway. 2) The smoke tube is used to release a cloud of smoke in the center of the airway, about 0.9 m (3 ft) upstream of the first mark on the floor. 3) A timed interval begins when the leading edge of the smoke cloud passes over the first mark, and the interval stops when the leading edge of the cloud passes over the second mark. 4) A factor of 20% is subtracted from the cal¬culated velocity to determine the true average velocity, providing a correction for the centerline and for the spreading effect at the front of the cloud. From time to time the Bureau of Mines has received requests from persons who wish to destroy unwanted explosives, and although the information that follows has been accumulated from sources considered reliable,4/ the. Bureau of Mines assumes no responsibility for accidents that may result from following the suggestions offered. Explosives to be destroyed may be fresh material from damaged packages, usable material for which there is no further need, or material that has deteriorated either from natural aging or from improper storage to the point where it is unfit for use.

The accompanying diagrams represent a lamp provided with certain improvements which render it more serviceable for the use of the engineer or other mining official who is often compelled to visit several mines a day remote from each other, and may be called on to use the magnetic needle in any or all of them. "Malaysian offshore and surrounding region are favorable to the installation of driven piles. During the design phase, pile driveability analysis plays a major role in pile make-up design to suit and selection of the feasible hammer, besides defining acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for purpose. The accuracy level of driveability analyses depends substantially on the selection of its parameters that best represent the in-situ scenario. The most uncertain of the parameters are those related to the soil model. It is noted in various projects in the region, that the consideration of suitable soil resistance to driving, coupled with soil dynamic parameters, significantly affects driving sequence planning, design, material, hammer selection and most importantly pile acceptance criteria. This is particularly relevant for a region that contains predominantly clayey subsoil resulting in large diameter, long friction piles susceptible to driving disturbances and slow strength recovery. Various researchers suggested suitable dynamic parameters and soil resistance during driving calibrated to specific regions. Regional experience suggests a set of soil degradation and parameters to suit the different stages of driving which is corroborated by pile monitoring records during continuous and delayed driving scenarios. The most sensitive amongst all dynamic soil parameters is the skin damping in clay. Smith’s wave theory approach considers a conservative assumption in selecting the parameters in absence of site-specific data, while a different approach may be adopted based on consistency of the clay for a site where the geotechnical parameters are well defined. This paper summarizes some independent studies on the effects of variations in dynamic parameters and resistance at different stages of driving and suitability of choices of different pile make-up and hammers for an optimum design. Similar experiences, coupled with simulation studies and back-analyses of available driving records suggest a reasonable judgment for the region.INTRODUCTIONFixed structures are generally supported in the in-place condition on a pile foundation those may either be driven or drilled & grouted piles depending on the subsoil. The piles may be driven inside the jacket legs or drilled through individual skirts normally grouped in clusters at the base of each leg. The types of subsoil dealt with in the Peninsular Malaysia and Gulf of Thailand surrounding region are conducive to the installation of driven piles only. The design of an offshore pile is fundamentally the optimization of pile length, size and make-up those are suitable to the requirement and supply. An interactive effort combining aspects related to geotechnical, structural and constructability are required to converge into a feasible, safe and economic solution. Other than the checking of the installation feasibility using a set of hammers in a given environment, driveability analysis is also used to define acceptance criteria for a majority of the offshore piles. Unlike short and end bearing piles in sand/soft rock, the piles in clayey subsoil regime often could not be rested on a dense strata where it could be met by a definite set criteria. Usually a measurement of blow counts determined and defined by driveability analyses forms the acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for the purpose coupled with an optimum penetration. While softness and uncertainty of the soil strata at target penetration may be resulted in possible overdrive, an unusual delay or the presence of an unidentified cemented layer or a boulder may cause early refusal or underdrive scenario. Hence, accuracy of the investigation, driveabilty study as well as the precautionary measures to avoid delays during driving are of equal importance."

Production of a coal preparation plant is governed by many restrictions, such as the tonnage of different products and blends that can be sold within a given period, capacities and output proportions of the cleaning and sizing units, blending proportions, quality specifications, and costs and prices for the various products. Determination of the tonnage of each product and blend that should be made in order to obtain the maximum profit can be difficult unless a systematic method such as linear programming is used. In this paper the basic method of linear programming is described briefly. The Old Ben No. 9 preparation plant is used as an example to illustrate in detail how eqwations can be written to form a linear programming model of a coal preparation plant. Three sample problems, each requiring 56 or more equations and 63 structural variables, were solved with an IBM 650 computer. Linear programming is one of several mathematical tools used for operations research. It has been applied to many fields and has been used by a number of industries either to maximize the profits of certain operations or to minimize costs. P. B. Nalle and L. W. weeks' have described the use of the method by the Riverside Cement Co. to minimize the cost of blending raw materials to make portland cement. Their problem is to obtain at minimum cost a mix with certain specifications from a number of possible materials which have various costs and various amounts of CaO, SiO2, Fe2O3, and other constituents. In a paper on the use of linear programming by the National Coal Board in England, K. B. Williams and K. B. Halley2 describe how the transportation method, a variation of linear programming, is used to minimize the cost of sending 37 grades of coal from 28 mines to seven central washing plants which produce coal for furnace coke and foundry coke. The various coals have different percentages of volatile matter, moisture, sulfur, ash, and phosphorous, so there is considerable choice in how they can be blended to meet the specifications of the two products. The purpose of this paper is to show how linear programming can be used to maximize the profits of a coal washing plant which produces individual final products as well as blends. The Old Ben Corp. furnished assumed sample data from their Old Ben Mine No. 9 preparation plant for this investigation. However, the data that have been used are entirely the author's responsibility. METHOD OF LINEAR PROGRAMMING Numerous articles and books have been written on the theory and applications of linear programming.3-5 However, since the method has not been widely applied by the mining industry, a brief, nontheo-retical discussion of its basic method seems to be in order. Linear programming (Table I) is used to determine the best possible solution to a number of interdependent activities. It is essentially a method for making systematic selections from a number of possible solutions to determine positively the optimum solution. There may be other equally good solutions but no better ones. Each activity must have linear coefficients and there must be a criterion to judge how good the solution actually is. During the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000" C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. The silica tube was connected with an evacuating system so constructed that the volatilized gases could be removed from time to time and a low vacuum of 0.0002 to 0.0010 mm. of mercury continuously maintained. At no time during the period of heating or in the removal of the gases did the evacuated system come in contact with rubber stoppers or any rubber connections, making contamination from such a source, impossible. In other words, the only volatile products that could be: obtained must necessarily have come from the steel itself or from the glass and fused quartz system or from the mercury used as a sealing agent. In the carlier experiments, the steel treated was in the form of turnings, but this practice was discarded because the weight's of the turnings before and after being heated were widely inconsistent,, even when taken from the same piece of steel. This discrepancy developed largely through variation in the amount of metal volatilized with the gases; this metal could always be seen in the form of a ring where it condensed in the cooler portion of the tube in either the amorphous or crystalline condition. Because of the frequency in occurrence and the variation in the manner of deposition, this material was roughly analyzed and found to consist for the most part of iron. A detailed investigation was made of the phase diagram of silver-zirconium, particularly in the region 0 to 36 at. pct Ag. The system was found to be characterized by two intermediate phases Zr2Ag and ZrAg and a eutectoid reaction in which the -zirconium solid solution decomposes into a-zirconium and Zr2Ag. It was found that impurities in the range 0.05 pct from the iodide-type zirconium were sufficient to introduce deviations from binary behavior, and that with partial removal of these impurities an increase in the a-phase solid solubility limit from 0.1 to 1.1 at. pct Ag was observed. The phase diagram of the silver-zirconium system is of interest as an example of alloying a transition metal from the left side of the Periodic Table with a Group IB element. Silver would normally act as a univalent metal, its filled 4d-shell remaining undisturbed during the alloying. However, there is a possibility that some of the 4d electrons might transfer to the zirconium. An insight into such a question can occasionally be obtained by comparison of phase diagrams. The silver-zirconium system forms part of a more complete review of various solutes in zirconium in which these valency effects were studied.' Earlier work on the silver-zirconium system was done by Raub and Enge1,2 who investigated the silver-rich alloys. After the start of the present experhents, work on this system was reported by Kemper3 and by Karlsson4 which for the most part agrees with the phase diagram presented here. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by arc casting on a water-cooled, copper hearth with a tungsten electrode and in a pure argon atmosphere. Uniform solute composition was attained by multiple melting on alternate sides of the same ingot. Progressive improvements in the vacuum conditions inside the apparatus during the course of the experiments reduced the Vickers hardness increase of the pure zirconium control ingot from 10 to 20 points, observed initially, to negligible amounts at the end of the experiments. Such hardness changes in zirconium are a well known indication of purity. For example, -01 wt pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon increase hardness by 6, 10, and 3 VPN respectively. '9' Further verification that the final casting technique did not add a significant quantity of impurities was obtained when pure zirconium was arc cast and then isothermally annealed in the vicinity of the allotropic transition. The transition was always observed to take place over the same temperature range as in the original crystal bar. The alloy ingots were annealed in sealed silica capsules for times and temperatures which varied between 1 day at 1300°C and 60 days at 700°C. The best method found to prevent the reaction of the zirconium with the silica was foil wrapping of molybdenum or tantalum. With this method, samples of pure zirconium were found to be unchanged in hardness after annealing for 3 days at 1200°C. In most of the experiments the protection of these foils was supplemented by an additional layer of zirconium foil inside the molybdenum or tantalum foil. The alloys, foil, and the capsule were outgassed at pressures in the range 10 to l0-7mm Hg in the temperature range 800" to 1100°C before each anneal in order to remove hydrogen and other impurities, and to provide a suitable container for the high purity, inert atmosphere, which is essential in the annealing of zirconium. The temperature measurements were made with Pt/Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouples calibrated frequently during the experiments against the melting points of zinc, aluminum, silver, gold, and palladium. For the longer anneals the sum of various temperature errors was generally well within ± 2°C. For short-time anneals and during thermal analysis the overall temperature error is considered to be within ± 0.5°C. The compositions of the alloys from the quenching experiments were determined by chemical analysis at Johnson Matthey and Company, Ltd., under the direction of Mr. F. M. Lever. The actual metallo-graphic samples were individually analyzed in every case, and prior to the analyses two or more sides of each specimen were examined to insure that the specimen was not segregated. The sum of the solute and solvent analyses was in each case within the range 99.9 to 100.1 pct. In the course of the experiments, minor impurities in the range 0 to 500 ppm were found to have significant effects on the zirconium-rich portion of the phase diagram. Fluid Ioss agent.s for crude oil and for water have been studied in dynamic tests. A treatment using a spearhead with a fluid loss agent followed by plain fluid appears feas ible in crude oil, but not in water. An equation for spearhead depletion shows that spurt loss relative to fracture width must be low, if the portion of spearhead fluid in the treatment is to be small. The presence of colloidal matter in crude oils aids the fluid Ioss agent. Unlike in kerosene, where flow limited the agent deposition, in crude oils the filter cake continually formed and leak-off declined. The volume-time relation varied somewhat for different crudes, but was best described by a square root of time function. Spurt loss was inversely proportional to agent concentration. After the fluid loss agent initiated the filter cake, the crude oil colloids built on it effectively. A 2-minute or a 5-minute spearhead with double the normal agent concentration gave the same fluid Ioss curve as the same concentration did for a 30-minute test. The agents tested in water gave fluid Ioss plots on which, for the first few minutes, volume was proportional to the square root of time, but later became proportional to time. For fracture area calculation the customary square root of time function is a satisfactory approximation. Leak-off rates and spurt losses were higher in water systems than in oils. The spurt Ioss tended to be inversely proportional to concentration. In spearhead tests, the filter cakes were not eroded by water flow. However, the rather high spurt loss values make spearhead treatments impractical for water-based fluids. Introduction The effects of dynamic testing conditions on the performance of fluid loss agents in kerosene have been studied previously.' We have extended the work to include crude-oil- and water-based fracturing fluids. An understanding has been gained of the mechanisms of formation and functioning of the filter cakes of fluid loss agents. The practical aspects of evaluating performance of agents in relation to fracture area calculations also are considered. The feasibility of using the fluid loss agent in a spearhead stage of the treatment is examined further for both types of fluids. Experimental Procedure The dynamic fluid loss tests were performed in an apparatus similar to the high-pressure apparatus described in a previous publication.' A fracturing fluid was circulated over a rock surface located in a closed pressurized loop. The fluid flowed axially over the cylindrical surface of a core 2 in. in diameter X 3.5 in. long, mounted (with the flat ends sealed off) in a pipe, with 0.117 in. annular clearance. The filtrate was collected in a central hole in the core and led through valves to graduated cylinders. Provision was made for changing quickly the circulating fluid during the test (spearhead runs) without interrupting the filtration pressure. The only modifications were to add heating tapes and water jackets for the tests with crude oils, all conducted at ISOF, and to change all parts exposed to the test fluid to stainless steel for the tests with water-based fluids. The latter tests were made at room temperature, 80F. Three crude oils were tested. A mixed crude, obtained from a local refinery, contained a considerable amount of light ends. For safety reasons, it was stripped to 250F vapor temperature before use in the fluid loss tests. The other two oils were used as obtained from lease tanks. One was a greenish-brown, 37" API paraffinic crude, and the other was a black, 32" API asphaltic crude. The fluid loss agent for oil, here designated for brevity as Agent A, was Adomite@ Mark II*, a granular solid commercial agent, the same as previously tested in kerosene.' Three different compositions of fluid loss agents were tested in Tulsa tap water. Agent B was adomit& Aqua*, a solid commercial fluid loss agent, comprising clays and hydrophilic gums principally derived from starch. Agent C was a mixture of three parts of Agent B with two parts of silica flour. Agent D was Dowel1 J137, a mixture of guar gum and silica flour. The test cores were cut from contiguous blocks of Berea or Bandera sandstones. For the oil tests, the cores were oven dried, evacuated, saturated with kerosene, and the kerosene permeability was measured. The cores used with the water-based fluids were pretreated by saturating with 3 percent calcium &loride solution to minimize pemeability damage by the fresh water due to clay migration. The

The influence which Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu have, both individually and collectively, on the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid lead at 600"C zuas studied by circulating a H2S-Hz gas wlixture over a specific lead alloy until equilibrium was attained. Subsequently, the H2S concentration in the equilibrium gas mixture and sulfur concentration in the condensed phase were deterruined. The elements gold, silver, and antinzony (above 8 at. pct) increased the activity coefficient of sulfur. Bismuth had no apparent effect. Tin (above 3 at. pct) and copper decreased the coefficient. The influence of an individual element, i, on sulfur is best reported as the interaction parameter, riS, which is defined as The values o these first-order interaction zus are: ESzu = —55.0. These interaction parameters are used to predict the activity coefficient of sulfur in six fouv-component alloys and one seven-component alloy. Comparisons are made with direct experimental determinations. INTERACTIONS in dilute solution have been studied by many investigators. Most of the experimental work has been confined to solute-solvent interactions in simple binary systems and solute-solute interactions in ternary systems. Dealy and pehlke"~ have summarized the available literature on activity coefficients at infinite dilution in nonferrous binary alloys and have calculated from published data the values for interaction parameters in dilute nonferrous alloys. Interaction parameters are a convenient means of summarizing the effect of one solute species on another in a given solvent. Only a few investigators have studied interactions of the nonmetallic element sulfur in a metallic solvent. They are as follows: Rosenqvist,~ sulfur in silver; Rosenqvist and Cox,4 sulfur in steel; chipman, sulfur in alloy steels; Alcock and Richardson,% ulfur in copper alloys; Cheng and Alcock,' sulfur in iron, cobalt, and nickel; Cheng and ~lcock,' sulfur in lead and tin. The only reported work on the Pb-S system in the dilute-solution region is that of Cheng and Alcock.' Their investigation involved a study of the solubility of sulfur in liquid lead over the temperature range 500" to 680°C. The results may be summarized by the following relationship: S (dissolved in lead) + Pb(1) = PbS(s) log at. %S = -3388/T + 3.511 Experimentally, it was found that Henry's law was valid up to the solubility limit of sulfur in lead, i.e., at 600°C up to 0.43 pct. Their investigation did not include the study of sulfur in lead alloys. More accurate calculations could be made in smelting and refining systems if activity coefficients of solute species could be accurately predicted in complex solutions. One of the objectives of this study was to compare the experimental data with the values calculated from the equations derived from models for dilute solutions proposed by wagner9 and Alcock and Richardson. A temperature of 600°C was chosen as the experimental temperature to attain reasonable reaction rates and to minimize volatilization of the condensed phase. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The Pb, Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu used for preparation of the alloys were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. All were 99.999+ pct purity except the antimony and tin which were 99.99+ pct. The initial alloys prepared for this study consisted of twenty-one binary alloys, eleven ternary alloys, and one six-component alloy. The constituent elements were mixed for each desired alloy and were placed in a crucible machined from spectrographically pure graphite. The crucible was placed in a vycor tube which was evacuated with a vacuum pump and gettered by titanium sponge at 800°C for 8 to 12 hr. After the gettering was completed, the chamber containing the titanium was sealed and removed. The remaining sample chamber was placed in a tube furnace at 800°C for 2 hr and quenched in cold water. The final operation consisted of homogenization of the alloy for 1 to 2 weeks at a temperature just below the solidus for the individual system. The resulting master alloys were sectioned into small pieces and a random choice made for individual equilibrations. Cobalt sulfide (Cogs8) used to control the gas atmosphere in the circulation system was prepared by passing dried HzS for 24 hr over a Co-S mixture heated to 700°C in a tube furnace. This material was then mixed with cobalt metal to give a two-phase mixture which, when heated in hydrogen to a particular temperature, produced a desired H2S/H2 gas atmosphere in the circulation system. The diffusion field ahead of a lamellar interfnce is analyzed using an electrical analog. A self-consistent solution is obtained for the shape of the interfnce and the diffusion field by an iterative process. The solutions presented here are for a 50-50 eutectoid or eutectic, The shape of the interface is found to he independent of growth velocity and lamellar spacing, and to depend on the relative values of interfacial free energies at the phase houndaries . The mode of growth of lamellar eutectics and eutectoids has been a subject of much interest for many years.1-4 Mehl and Hagel 1 have shown photomicrographs taken by Tardif when he attempted to determine experimentally the shape of an advancing pearlite interface; the results are completely ambiguous. Brandt' and schei13 have made approximate calculations of the composition ahead of a lamellar growth front. The shape of the advancing front and the composition distribution ahead of the front are difficult to calculate because one depends on the other. It is the purpose of the present paper to describe a method by which this calculation has been done. Lamellar-eutectic growth usually occurs under conditions where the growth is fairly rapid, and the interface temperature is close to the eutectic temperature. The growth rate is usually determined by heat flow. Eutectoid growth, on the other hand, can best be studied by quenching to some temperature, and allowing growth to proceed isother-mally. In both cases the growth is believed to be controlled by diffusion* rather than by the atomic kinetics of the transformation. This being the case, a single treatment of the diffusion equation will apply to both cases, provided the region of the interface in a eutectic may be considered to be isothermal. If a part of the interface could appreciably change its thermodynamic driving force by advancing ahead of or lagging behind the mean interface, then the two cases would not be similar. Eutectics normally grow in temperature gradients of the or-der of a few degrees per centimeter. The normal eutectic spacing is the order of a few microns. Part of the interface would have to extend many lamellar spacings ahead of the mean interface before it experienced sensibly different conditions. The interface temperature is usually a few tenths of a degree below the eutectic temperature so that temperature differences of the order of one-thousandths of a degree (a displacement of one lamellar spacing) would be unimportant. Protrusions large compared to the mean spacing do occur when one phase only grows into a eutectic liquid. This is usually a dendritic type of growth, and easily distinguishable from the lamellar mode of growth. A single treatment of lamellar growth will apply equally well to both eutectic and eutectoid decomposition. At the interface, which as shown above is essentially isothermal, the difference between the equilibrium eutectic temperature Teu and the actual interface temperature Ti, can be divided into two parts: 1) the composition varies across the interface, so that the local equilibrium temperature is not Teu; and 2) the interface is curved, so that the local equilibrium temperature is depressed according to the Gibbs-Thompson relationship. This undercooling can be written as Teu-Ti =?T = mAC(x) + a/r(x) [1] where ?C(X) is the departure of the composition at a point x on the interface from the eutectic composition, see Fig. 1, r(x) is the local radius of curvature at a point x on the interface, m is the slope of the liquidus line on the phase diagram, and a is a constant given by where s is the interfacial free energy, TE is the equilibrium temperature, and L is the latent heat of fusion. The calculations in this paper will be made only for the case where the phase diagram is symmetric, that is, the eutectic occurs at 50 pct, the liquidi have the same magnitude slope m at the eutectic temperature, and C,, the amount of B rejected when unit volume of a freezes, see Fig. 2(a), is the same for both phases. As shown in Fig. 2(b), the composition ahead of the a phase will be rich in B, the composition ahead of the ß phase will be rich in A. Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used by the Iron Ore Co. at Smallwood, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody or new orebodies a particular drill will be the most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock properties. For rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index. A discussion is presented on the fuel oxygen ratios to be used in jet piercing and on the site gas sampling and analysis which has been used to set up the drills. The fuel has been cut back so that stoichio-metric conditions exist, carbon monoxide is drastically reduced and pop-up or exploding holes eliminated. No decrease in penetration rate has been observed contrary to the published results of previous workers. The blasting procedure and results at Smallwood are discussed and the operation of Iron Ore Co.'s slurry pump-mix truck is also described briefly. Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Co.'s Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million tons of crude and 7% million tons of concentrate and pellets which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. For convenience the ore has been split-into the following classifications depending on the percentage of magnetics in the sample, shown in brackets: specularite (0 to 10%), specularite-magnetite (10 to 20%), magnetite- specularite (20 to 30%), magnetite (>30%). The order of classification also represents the order of increasing grinding difficulty - the specularite generally being the easiest and the magnetite the hardest. The orebody also contains a small percentage of waste materials consisting of limonite carbonate, quartz carbonate and quartz magnetite. The first two materials are among the softest in the mine, generally softer than the specularite, and the quartz magnetite is amongst the hardest. The bulk of the material in the mine is of the specularite-magnetite and magnetite-specularite classifications. As a result of test drilling at Smallwood in 1960 with rotary, jet and percussion drills, the Iron Ore Co. purchased four JPM-4 jet piercers for the bulk of production drilling and set up an oxygen plant to supply 20 tons of oxygen per day. This oxygen is sufficient for two machines operating full time and one part time. In addition, there are two 50-R, one 60-R and one 40-R machines in use. The benches are 45 ft high and 50 ft holes are generally drilled. JET DRILLING At the onset of jet drilling in the late fall of 1962, two major problems were encountered: 1) freezing due to winter operations; experience and the use of heat at more places, such as the rotary head, has eliminated this,'" and 2) exploding or "popping" drilled holes; this happened frequently (several holes "popping" each day) and was the cause of two lost time accidents. In one instance a hole was being measured with a tape which fell down the hole causing it to "pop." Safety glasses though pulverized saved the wearer's eyesight. Various methods were then employed to detonate the holes before measuring or loading (dropping lighted rags of fusees down, or sparking across a spark gap). These methods were time consuming and far from completely successful. Consideration was given to the fuel oxygen ratio on the machines and what this would produce in the way of product gases. A fuel oxygen weight ratio of 0.35 which was quite oxygen negative was being used. Theoretically appreciable carbon monoxide would be produced at this fuel oxygen ratio. On the close down procedure of the jet which calls for low oxygen after flame out, oxygen would be left in the hole along with this carbon monoxide. This is an explosive mixture. In drilling operations, attention generally is given to hole angles rather than to changes of angle, in spite of the fact that the latter are responsible for drilling and production troubles. The paper presents means for specifying maximum permissible changes of hole angle to insure a trouble-free hole, using a minimum amount of surveys. It is expected that the paper will result in a decrease of drilling costs, not only by avoiding troubles, but also by removing the fear of such troubles. SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Excessive dog-legs result in such troubles as fatigue failures of drill pipe, fatigue failures of drill-collar connections, worn tool joints and drill pipe, key seats, grooved casing, etc. Most of these detrimental effects greatly increase with the amount of tension to which drill pipe is subjected in the dog-leg. Therefore, the closer a dog-leg is to the total anticipated depth, the greater becomes its acceptable severity. Very large collar-to-hole clearances will cause fatigue of drill-collar connections and shorten their life, even in very mild dog-legs. Another finding regarding fatiguing of collar connections in dog-legs is that rotating with the bit off bottom sometimes may be worse than drilling with the full weight of drill collars on the bit, mainly in highly inclined holes when the inclination decreases with depth in the dog-leg. Means are given for specifying maximum dog-legs compatible with trouble-free holes. An inexpensive technique proposed is to take inclinometer or directional surveys far apart; then, if an excessive dog-leg is detected in some interval, intermediate close-spaced surveys are run in this interval. The application of the findings should result in a decrease of drilling costs, not only by avoiding troubles, but mainly by removing the fear of such troubles. The result would be much more frequent drilling with heavy weights on bit, regardless of hole deviation. Because of errors inherent to their use, presently available surveys are not very suitable for detecting dog-legs. There is a need for instruments especially adapted to dog-leg surveys. Crooked hole drilling rules should fall into two distinct categories—(1) those whose purpose is to bottom the hole as desired, and (2) those whose purpose is to insure a trouble-free hole. Three kinds of first-category rules in usage today are as follows. 1. A means to bottom the hole as desired is to prevent the bottom of the hole from being horizontally too far from the surface location; this may be achieved by keeping the hole inclination below some maximum permissible value such as, for instance, 5. 2. Another means to achieve the same goal is to limit the rate at which the inclination is allowed to increase with depth. A frequently used rate is 1/1,000 ft. In other words, a maximum deviation of l° is allowed at 1,000 ft, 2 at 2,000 ft, 3 at 3,000 ft, etc. 3. Whenever application of the first two means precludes carrying the full weight on bit required for most economical drilling, then the best course is to take advantage of the natural tendency of the hole to drift updip, displace the surface location accordingly and impose a target area within which the hole should be bottomed. This method has already been successfully applied,'.' and its usage probably will become more frequent in the future. Means for calculating the amount of necessary surface location displacement are avail-able.3'5'6 If in high-dip formations the full weight on bit should result in unreasonably great deviations, the situation could be remedied by increasing the size of collars and (if needed) the size of both hole and collars,351 or in some cases by using several stabilizers. Rules which would fall into the second category (i.e., rules whose purpose is to insure a trouble-free hole) are seldom specified today. It is vaguely believed that following Rules 1 and 2 of the first category will automatically prevent troubles. Actually, this is not true. If at some depth the only specified rule is that the hole inclination must be less than 4", the hole may be lost if the deviation suddenly drops from 4 to 2, or if the direction of the drift changes, etc. Rule 3 of the first category is generally used in conjunction with a rule belonging to the second category, namely, that the hole curvature' (dog-leg severity) must not exceed the arbitrarily chosen value of 1½ /100 ft. This Paper contains a comprehensive survey of the known electron-hole radiative recombination mechanisms in the family of III-V compounds. Because of space limitations, the luminescence properties of each III- V compound are not reviewed separately and exhaustively. Instead, the different known types of recombination processes are discussed in turn and exemplified with reference to the III- V compound in which they were first recognized, or are best understood. Electron-hole recombinations usually occur predominantly at impurities or lattice defects either introduced de1iberately or inadvertently present, but radiative intrinsic interband electron-hole recombinations, which occur in perfect crystals, have been observed. Recombination processes which involve the participation of impurities or lattice defects ("extrinsic" recombinations) considered include transitions in which a) free carriers recombine with carriers trapped at impurities ("free to bound" transitions) , b) electrons bound at donor impurities recombine with holes trapped at acceptor impurities ("donor-acceptor pair" recombinations), C) excitons bound to charged or neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine radiatively (both "resonance" and "two-electron" "bound exci-ton" transitions have been observed), d) excitons bound to neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine non-radiatively (an example of an "Auger" recombination), and e) excitons bound to impurities with the same number of valence electrons as the host atom which they replace ("isoelectronic " traps) recombine radiatively. In addition, Auger recombination processes involving one or more free carriers have been observed. These extrinsic processes all involve impurities which are present as point defects. Some apparently well-authenticated examples of the recombination of excitons bound to complex impurity-lattice defect centers including nearest-neighbor donor-acceptor pairs are also discussed. Identificalions of the transitions involved in stimulated emission from the direct gap III-V compounds are briefly reviewed. Although the examples of these recombination mechanisms are selected from the III-IV compounds ia this review, these processes have quite general relevance in semiconducting crystalline solids; irrdeed most of them have also been identified in the 11- VI compounds and elernental semzconductors. THE development of crystal growth and purification techniques in recent years and concurrent advances in the understanding of physical processes in solids has accelerated the development of a wide variety of solid-state electronic devices of proven utility. These de- vices are generally used for switching or amplifying operations in electrical circuits. Most solid-state circuit elements are very photosensitive. This photo-sensitivity is generally undesirable and the single-crystal chip forming the active portion of the solid-state device is mounted in an opaque container. The photosensitivity is made use of in phototransis-tors and photodiodes, which are among the most sensitive detectors of electromagnetic radiation particularly in the near infrared.' In these devices, light is converted into electrical power. The solid-state lamp utilizes the inverse effect, namely the conversion of electrical power into light. There is an increasing tendency to use single-crystal diodes rather than the earlier electroluminescent cells in which the active material is present as a powder embedded in a suitable dielectric.' The radiation is emitted at a rate far in excess of the thermal equilibrium rate for the frequencies and temperatures involved; i.e., luminescence occurs. The development of practically efficient solid-state lamps is at an early stage compared with solid- state circuit elements or even photodetectors. Considerable progress has been made in recent years, however.3 The present review is devoted to a survey of the radiative recombination processes in the semiconducting compound crystalline solids formed from elements in groups I11 and V in the periodic table. These materials exhibit the full range of known recombination processes in solids. In fact many of these processes were discovered in 111-V semiconductors. Nonradiative recombination processes, which control the lutninescence efficiency, are also discussed. Luminescence is efficiently excited in semiconductors through processes which produce large excess concentrations of free electrons and holes in the energy bands of the crystal. Transitions induced by lattice defects or impurities usually predominate in the recombination process. By contrast, luminescence in the conventional fluorescent lamp is excited by optical absorption at the luminescent impurity center itself (the activator) and/or at a second type of impurity center (the sensitizer). This latter type of photoluminescence process, occurring in doped ionic crystals with wide band gaps, is outside the scope of this review.4 I) ENERGY BAND DESCRIPTION OF ELECTRON STATES IN CRYSTALS The energy band description of the energy states available to an electron in a crystal forms the basis of our understanding of the empirical division of crystalline solids into metals, semiconductors, and insulators in accordance with their electrical and optical properties.' Gloomy predictions that domestic mineral reserves are approaching exhaustion are unwarranted and may be harmful, this author contends. Specific mineral forecasting errors in the Paley Report are cited to support this contention, and steps that can be taken to insure a progressive mineral industry capable of keeping pace with the major raw material needs of the nation through advancing technology are suggested. Mining is both exciting and rewarding —although at times somewhat frustrating— and we all can have real pride in our industry, in its people, and in its accomplishments. It is, however, with concern that I have noted a deterioration in this Country in what might be called mining's stature and in the growth of a belief in many quarters that our mineral reserves are rapidly approaching exhaustion. In other words, there is a popular image that we are fast becoming a "have not" nation in many respects and that the domestic mining industry can no longer be considered, in the vernacular of Wall Street to offer much in the way of "growth potential." I do not subscribe to this hypothesis, nor do I be-li4ve that the record of the mining industry bears this out. However, let me add that we can, in time, talk ourselves into this frame of mind and we can hasten the day when this very well might come about by unnecessary and unwise legislation or regulation. My remarks today are basically designed to give my reasons for refuting this negative philosophy and to review our record. With your help, I know we can improve our image, and the public's recognition of our industry's peculiar problems. The progress of our civilization over the centuries has been fundamentally based upon proper use of raw materials, both agricultural and mineral, and upon energy, human or otherwise. As the standard of living has progressed century by century, the demands for mineral raw materials have increased in an irregular, but steadily rising progression. Fortunately, those minerals on which we depend most, i.e., iron, coal, petroleum, copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc have been neither too difficult to find nor to process into useful form. Iron, the most useful of all metals, is present in various amounts in most rock types and soils. Gold, seemingly the most generally desired (but certainly not the most useful of all metals), occurs in sea water in a far greater total tonnage than has been won from all of the world's known gold mines. If the latter is true, then why do we not see large installations treating sea water for the recovery of its gold content? The answer, of course, is that even the French, who seem, from their recent actions, to value gold above all else, have not devised a way of doing this at a profit. Theoretically, it is possible, but not with today's technology at a cost which would justify the effort. Man has exploited only those mineral concentrations which accidents of nature have placed within his so far limited means of finding and utilizing. What we geologists and engineers refer to as an orebody is nothing more than a concentration of minerals, exploitable with available knowledge, that will yield a value greater than the value attached to the energy and capital required to produce it. What is "ore" and what is not "ore" is, in the end, a matter of economics. The economic problem stems from the physical and chemical character of mineral deposits. The good Lord stacked the cards heavily in favor of rising costs by limiting the amount of the higher grade ores easily available. As the best and most accessible ores are depleted, it becomes necessary to work harder and with greater ingenuity to produce more from less accessible and lower grade resources. The quantity of mineral raw materials we can have in the future will be determined largely by what we can afford to pay for them in terms of human effort, capital outlay and production energies. We will always have the problem of cost with us and our only real means of keeping ahead of rising costs is by continually improving our technical abilities. We, in this country at least, no longer have open to us large and unexplored virgin wildernesses in which a pick-and-shovel prospector might uncover an untouched mineral bonanza. The rest of the world also has few conventional frontiers left in which the explorer-prospector is free to roam. We do, however, have enormous land areas unexplored, and untouched po-

A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8' ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,' dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,' carbon in a Fe,' and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith's data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken's model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry's law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound's discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms.
