"The way alarm information is provided to an operator can make a huge difference in the minutes following an upset. Process alarms are often looked at as a way to help avoid catastrophic failure and serious accidents. But knowing that mineral processing is so energy consuming and that raw material is not consistent, all small upsets should also be seen as a catastrophe because they can have significant impact on product cost and quality.This paper will demonstrate how it is possible to use data from process alarms to provide operators with real time, value added information that will help them take the right decision at the right time and in turn, reduce unplanned downtime by 20 to 80% and incidents by up to 50% (number and cost),and optimize energy and capacity usage.In the era of Big Data, living in a world where we are submerged with information, one of the biggest challenges is to find the right information at the right time.Alarm rationalization projects will often focus on alarm quantity, but alarm quality is also very important. It is possible, by following a simple 6-step process to turn “alarms” into truly valuable information for operators. Based on known standards (ANSI/ISA 18.2 and EEMUA 191), this process will capture the knowledge of the best and most experienced operators and process engineers, and make it readily available to everyone, right on time, when it matters the most.INTRODUCTIONWhen spending some time in a modern control room, it is easy to notice the huge quantity of information that is available to the operator. Modern operation stations feature multiple screens with HD capability. These screens display information like process display, history trends, alarms and events list, maps with geo-located information, images from live cameras, etc. However, it is harder to assess whether all this information is really helping operators: Is all the information relevant? Are process screens overcrowded? Is the information easy to understand? Does the operator know what to do with all the information? Are there too many alarms?"

"Waelz oxide from steel mill dust recycling is usually sold to the primary zinc industry, where it is first charged to the roasters to eliminate the remaining fluorides and chlorides. This limits the overall amount of secondary materials which can be used because of different operating problems in the roasters. Another option, in the case where the halides are low, would be direct leaching with low or medium concentrated sulphuric acid. Unfortunately, because of the carryover of some steel mill dust, iron is also present in the Waelz oxide, reaching contents up to 5 wt.%. Since the objective is to treat the solution more or less directly by electrowinning, with only a few simple preliminary purification steps, iron in the solution is a very important factor. Various trials have been done to investigate the dissolution behavior of the iron contained in the Waelz oxide. Although the zinc extraction should reach a maximum, all other elements, especially iron, should be low. This paper describes the results of our research in this area and offers possible options for Waelz oxide utilization. There is also a focus on how other elements, present in the material, influence the dissolution behaviour of zinc and iron, and whether a loss of zinc is unavoidable, if low iron dissolution is required.INTRODUCTION One of the most important secondary zinc resources is the zinc oxide originating from steel mill dust recycling. For the treatment of high zinc containing steel mill dusts, the Waelz kiln process is the so called “best available technology” and it dominates the industry, with roughly a 90% market share. The product Waelz oxide contains mostly zinc oxide, but it also contains lead compounds and halides due to evaporation with the zinc. In addition, it contains iron and some slag compounds due to mechanical carry-over. The presence of halides limits the use of the material as an alternative concentrate for primary zinc electrowinning. Such halides can be reduced to a certain extent by washing and/or solvent extraction (see following chapter). Although lead is not troublesome and theoretically represents a second recoverable valuable metal, iron is unwanted and causes additional problems during leaching. Even though Waelz oxide is generally a highly welcome input material in primary zinc metallurgy, due to its high zinc content, it still contains halides, and in the majority of cases, the oxide must first be treated in a roasting process. Different circumstances, like accretion formation because of the lead and halogen compounds as well as unwanted cooling effects in the roaster, limit the amount of Waelz oxide which can be substituted for the primary concentrate. Another, even more limiting factor, is the allowable concentrations of chlorides and fluorides in zinc electrowinning, the last step in the primary zinc processing route (Ruetten, 2011)."

The fact that this latest and most modern of the Universal Atlas Cement Company's plants at Northampton, Pa., is the fifth to be built on these same properties, and their development has been coincidental with the development of the portland cement industry in the United States, makes it appropriate to sketch briefly the history of the successive steps. In 1889 the original Atlas Portland Cement Co. started its first plant at Coplay, Pa., which is just across the Lehigh River from the present operation. Here the first successful rotary kiln was operated. These kilns were 6 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. long; they used oil for fuel until 1895, when the company developed the first burner for pulverized coal. Shortly thereafter the Atlas company acquired property on the Northampton side of the river and built its plants Nos. 2, 3 and 4 within the following 10 years. During the same period the production of portland cement in the country was increasing rapidly; owing largely to the development of the rotary kiln and improved grinding machinery, which lowered the cost and improved the quality of cement. The general tendency has been to increase the length of the kiln and grind both raw material and finished product Liner. In 1930 the Atlas Portland Cement Co. and the Universal Portland Cement Co. united to form the Universal Atlas Cement Co., and the same policy of improving the product has been continued. Because of the large amount of research carried on by manufacturers and consumers, including government agencies, there is a demand for cement of different chemical and physical characteristics for different kinds of structures. Hence many engineers in recent years have been asking for cements of certain definite chemical analyses, which they think are best for their particular jobs. This has compelled the manufacturer to make several different types of cement by variations of chemical composition. These are generally made by adding silica, iron and lime to the standard mixture, which necessarily increases the cost of the product. Therefore the Universal Atlas Cement Co., in planning the modernization of its Northampton plant, gave this particular phase of the problem considerable study. Research and experimentation have developed the practicability of making a wide variety of differently proportioned raw materials for cement by a process of subtraction rather than by addition. With such process, it is possible to discard the undesirable aluminates and silicates from the ample supply of impure limestone available from the company's property rather than by adding high-grade limestone obtained from distant sources. This procedure requires mineral separation by centrifugal sedimentation and froth flotation. In resource definition and mine development, major capital expenditures are committed on the basis of sparse information and even in production surprises such as bad ground are not uncommon. Drill holes constitute the principal source of information about the orebody and its environment and optimisation of drilling implies maximising the yield of useful information per dollar expended. Geophysical borehole logging provides new flexibility for optimising the drilling budget. Economic benefits can flow from geophysical logging at all stages of the mining cycle. The most commonly cited benefit is substitution of diamond delineation drilling with cheaper percussion or reverse circulation drilling in cases where geophysical logs can substitute for core. This approach can deliver an attractive direct saving in drilling costs (and time) if drill meterage is unchanged, or a potentially greater indirect benefit from better ore control if more holes are drilled within the original drilling budget. More ore contact intercepts per dollar can translate into lower dilution and enhanced ore recovery, thereby increasing revenue as well as reducing mining costs. Substitution of diamond drilling with percussion drilling is not always feasible. However, geophysical logging of diamond holes is often highly advantageous in its own right, both for geotechnical characterisation as well as ore delineation. Operational advantages of logging include data objectivity, speed of interpretation and reduced core handling and analysis costs. Geophysical logging assists mining engineers by providing a continuous measure of in situ rock strength, even over intervals with poor core recovery. The additional expense of geophysical logging in blast holes can be justified in terms of more accurate ore boundary delineation and rock strength evaluation. Precise ore boundary delineation permits refinement of charge placement, to minimise dilution and maximise recovery. Detailed knowledge of rock strength can enable optimisation of blast design. Rock strength can be evaluated in real-time via analysis of drill performance data recorded with measurement-while-drilling (MWD) technology. To successfully apply geophysical logging in mines, its technical, operational and economic viability must all be established. This entails verification of the existence of appropriate physical property contrasts, investigation of the best way to integrate the geophysical results with the mining method and an objective assessment of the value of the resulting mine performance benefit. Geophysical logging is already well established in many mining operations. The greatest impediments to its wider utilisation at mines are: lack of appreciation of geophysics by most mine geologists, engineers and managers; limited interpretational aids; and the necessity to re-enter completed drill holes. In this paper we endeavour to address these issues by informing mine geologists about potential applications of geophysics, by illustrating automated interpretation of geophysical logs and by highlighting the importance of emerging MWD and logging- while-drilling (LWD) technology.

THE relative temperature distribution within a coke oven and among the ovens in a battery can be obtained automatically for the operator's guidance by sighting a total-radiation pyrometer on the face of the coke as it is pushed out, and recording the surface temperature. Keeping the instrument clean and keeping its view of the coke unobstructed by smoke and dust are the principal problems. Typical records from three plants are presented in this paper, showing that the temperature patterns are reproducible. DEVELOPMENT OF METHOD The method of coke pyrometry described in this paper was introduced in 1936 by E. A. Lee, then Assistant Superintendent, now Superintendent, of the Coke Plant at Lorain Works, National Tube Co., Lorain, Ohio. At the request of the Coke Committee of the United States Steel Corporation, the Research Laboratory of the Corporation undertook to adapt the method to the somewhat different conditions met with at the Gary Works of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, Gary, Ind., and at the Clairton Works of the same Corporation at Clairton, Pa. This work was done in cooperation with the Leeds and Northrup Co. of Philadelphia and later with the Brown Instrument Co. Division of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co., Philadelphia. We of the Research Laboratory wish to express our appreciation of the courtesies extended by Mr. Lee, by A. N. Cole, Superintendent of the Gary coke plant, and by D. P. Finney, Assistant General Superintendent in charge of coke-plant operations at Clairton. We are also indebted to the instrument companies for the loan of a part of the equipment. At Gary and Clairton the instruments were installed and various experiments were made by J. W. Bain, of the Research Laboratory of the United States Steel Corporation. PYROMETRY OF COKE The coke inside a by-product oven is almost completely inaccessible to pyrometric instruments. The temperature in the walls can conceivably be measured with thermocouples, but the atmosphere is usually strongly reducing, a condition well known to be destructive to the accuracy of the customary high-temperature couples. In some plants, periodic readings are taken with an optical pyrometer sighted into the top of the combustion flues. This is a useful measure for safety and general control, as it tends to prevent the damage that would result from overheating of the ovens. It does not, however, tell much about the temperature of the coke itself, because of the continually changing gradient in the wall between the coke and the combustion chamber. The best indication of the temperature of the coke itself must therefore be obtained by observation of the product as it is pushed out of the oven. The human eye is very sensitive to variations in brightness of a surface, and particularly to differences in brightness over a continuous hot surface.

Previous studies of plastic deformation of metals have emphasized the important role of bending and constraints during strain under relatively pure stresses.1"5 Some new phenomena such as early conjugate slip6 and polygonization7 are intimately concerned with the relief of bending stresses, the former by slip and the latter by a process analogous to re-crystallization. However, few analyses of the bending deformation of single crystals were found in the literature, and those8,9 are sufficiently previous to the modern interpretations of slip to invite further investigation in this area. The transverse bending mode of testing, using the two-point loading method, was selected because the center portion of the specimen may be considered as under a theoretically pure bending stress with a uniform bending moment. Considerable attention was given to both the lattice distortion and flow characteristics of the crystals during deformation. Experimental Proeedare A specimen under the action of equal and opposite couples at both ends is said to undergo pure bending. The shear and moment diagrams of a specimen under the two-point loading method of transverse bending are shown in Fig 1. The moment over the middle-third of the span is equal to PL/6, and the vertical shear is zero. Fig 2 (A) illustrates the stress distribution in the elastic range on a plane across the middle of the specimen. It can be seen that the normal stress has a maximum value at the extreme surfaces on the tension and compression sides, and decreases proportionately to zero as it approaches the neutral plane. However, when the plastic range is reached, the stress distribution is no longer a straight line relation, but changes in a manner which can be best illustrated as shown in Fig 2(B). The following calculation and stress analysis are mainly in accordance with the works reported by Timoshenkol0 and Kochendörfer.9 From the simple beam formula, the maximum normal stress will occur at the surface of the specimen. For a round specimen with a radius r and for a rectangular specimen with a height 2h and width 2b, the maximum normal stress, Sp, will be given by the following formulas: For round specimen: 2PL Sp = 3pr3 [1] For rectangular specimen: Sn = 8bh2 [2] Since it is reasonable to consider that slip takes place under the same conditions as in uniaxial loading, the resolved shear stress S?, along the operative slip direction will be as follows: For round specimen: 2PL sin x cos ? The wall-building properties of salt-water drilling muds can be improved markedly by the addition of: (I) natural gums, such as traga-canth, karaya, and ghatti; (2) seaweeds, such as Irish moss; or (3) gelatinized starch. Results of laboratory tests have been confirmed by field trials. For drilling operations in which the mud becomes contaminated by salt, either through penetrating salt-bearing rocks or by addition of sea water to the mud, the added cost resulting from the use of one of the substances listed above is more than offset by freedom from stuck drill pipe and ease in running casing. Introduction It has been recognized for many years that oil production might be seriously hampered by infiltration of water from the drilling mud.l-4 As knowledge of the mechanism of the wall-building process advanced, methods were developed for evaluating the filtration characteristics of muds.5-ll The wall-building properties of freshwater muds are commonly regulated by the addition of bentonitic clays, or of agents to promote the dispersion of the natural mud solids. When strata bearing soluble salts are encountered in the course of drilling, the salts are incorporated in the mud; the clay solids are flocculated and water loss is increased tremendously. Methods gen-crally used in controlling filtration of freshwater muds are no longer applicable. The problem of reducing water loss from salt-water muds is not confined to any particular area, but is acute in parts of West Texas. Salt beds several hundred feet thick must be penetrated before the oil-bearing formation is reached. Since the formation drilled does not provide mud-making material, it is necessary to use large quantities of commercial clays, and even the best commercial clay does not afford relief from the problem of high filtration. A laboratory study has been made of methods of improving the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds, and some of the methods have been used in field practice. Laboratory Investigations Procedure Inasmuch as the immediate object of the investigation was the development of means of improving the wall-building properties of muds used in West Texas, an attempt was made to employ muds in the laboratory study comparable to those in field use. Samples of muds used in drilling the producing formations in six wells were secured. The properties of these samples are summarized in Table I, which lists the densities, viscosities, filtrations, and analyses of the filtrates for calcium, chloride, and sulphate. Viscosity was measured in the Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester8 at a pressure of 100 lb. per sq. in. Filtration rates are considerably higher than those of usual fresh-water muds, which amount to about 20 C.C. in 30 min. Water loss was so rapid in samples 4, 5 and 6 that filtration was complete in less than 10 min. and the values for 30 min. were extrapolated from the rates at shorter

Pulverized coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the dificulties incident to the burning of coal. In a. cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverizeti in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. Process of Burning Cement Clinkers The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output, This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,' in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. Coal has been fighting a rear-guard action since the last World War. The battle against competitive fuels has been largely guerilla warfare with more sniping within the ranks than of organized opposition. Oil and natural gas are the fuels that over these twenty odd years have driven coal backward and out of many profitable markets. Now, somewhat timidly, the coal industry is trying a new weapon; namely, Research, or let us more properly say, Organized Research. Engineers have been designing this weapon for many years, supported by those interested in coal, including some coal producers. A part of this pioneer work has been Fundamental Research, the Ph.D. kind that is over the heads of most of us. Another part has been aimed at immediate objectives and realizable profits, the practical, man-in-the-street sort. That is Industrial Research. Enough has been accomplished to make a fair exhibit, but whether this new weapon will have sufficient fire power to rout the opposition, whether the industry will really go into production and use it, the next few years will tell. Need foR Coal Research To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous—rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privatelyfinanced research is just started in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 2 5 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200,-000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1 ,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.

Based on laboratory tests conducted with the use of fresh core samples as well as a considerable amount of field data obtained from numerous water floods in northeastern Oklahoma, it appears that for any given oil saturation there is a critical maximum velocity above which the oil-recovery efficiency falls off very rapidly. In effect, when a water flood is operated above this critical velocity, the injected water-oil ratio rises extremely fast, thus shortening the economic life of the flood and reducing the ultimate oil recovery. This critical velocity apparently varies considerably with the percentage of oil saturation of the sand, so that in effect the higher the oil saturation at the beginning of a flood the higher the velocity that can be used successfully. In reviewing several of the earlier floods in the Mid-Continent area, it is concluded that most of the failures were due to two things: (I) too low an oil saturation, such as 30 per cent, and (2) too high water-injection rates, Although considerably more field data are necessary to establish definite limits, it would seem that the proper field injection rate for a 330 by 330 or 440 by 440-ft. spacing varies from approximately I bbl. per foot of sand per day where the oil saturation is as low as 30 per cent up to 5 bbl per foot of sand per day when the oil saturation is as high as 45 to 50 per cent, Introduction With secondary recovery by water-flooding receiving more and more attention throughout the industry, a greater working knowledge of multiphase flow under field conditions becomes more and more necessary A great deal of research has been carried on in highly idealized laboratory conditions, from which certain trends have been indicated, but with few exceptions no direct application to field use has been reported. widely varying conclusions have been drawn from the mass of idealized laboratory experiments and often this divergence apparently was due to the neglect of connate or interstitial water. Since interstitial water is such an important factor in water-flooding operations, it then follows that any laboratory flooding experiment must necessarily take it into account; and since it is difficult to set up laboratory models to allow for interstitial water, the next best procedure is to use fresh core samples for such tests. Even this procedure has its difficulties, inasmuch as it is possible to run only one flooding test on each sample, as each sample differs somewhat in character from all other samples. However, this disadvantage can be overcome to a large degree by the use of an extremely large number of samples. The next question that arises is: "IS it possible to get uncontaminated core samples having a true oil and water saturation like that existing in the reservoir?" If the sand under consideration is still in the primary stage of production, with a normal or relatively high amount of gas still in solution in the oil, probably it is not possible to get a nonflushed core. The problem falls into three natural categories: (1) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. ONE of the earliest problems in the life of any community is the provision of an adequate supply of water sufficiently free from all types of contamination to be suitable for domestic purposes. Generally speaking, the location of most communities is determined to a great extent by the availability of an adequate supply of satisfactory water. For a mining camp, that consideration cannot be foremost. Here, the ore takes first place, and the men who mine it must do the best they can under the existing conditions. If there is no local source of water, it must be brought from some distant source or must be found by sinking shafts or drilling wells. Fortunate indeed is the mining company that discovers a commercially valuable ore deposit beside a never failing creek full of pure water, with sufficient water rights available, because the acquisition of water in any other manner nearly always involves not only a considerable period of time but the expenditure of considerable money. The experience of Climax Molybdenum Co. demonstrates the measures that sometimes are necessary in order to provide a suitable supply of water. The Climax mine and mill are on the Continental Divide, about 13 miles northeast of Leadville. The elevation of the domestic part of the camp varies from a minimum of 11,320 ft. to a maximum of approximately 11,550 ft. above sea level, and, as is common at such altitudes, the near-by streams that might be suitable for a water supply are small and intermittent, usually flowing only during the summer months. The only streams of any size in the immediate vicinity of Climax are the Ten Mile and Arkansas Rivers. The headwaters of Ten Mile River are on the Company's property, and its water has been used for the domestic supply. The headwaters of the Arkansas River are about 2 miles distant and have not been used as a source of supply by the company. During the past 11 years of the production of molybdenum at-Climax, the number of families living there has increased from about 45 to 283, and the population has increased from about 200 to 1200 persons. Consequently, the capacity of the water-treatment facilities, and the amount of water available, had to be increased to meet the requirements of the camp. As early as 1932 it was recognized that the water in Ten Mile River would not continue to be adequate for domestic purposes and after considerable discussion it was decided to drive a drift through the major fault in an effort to find additional water. This drift was completed in 1935 and tapped sufficient water to make the supply adequate. This water was treated in a tank underground, where lime was added, and was then piped into the domestic supply lines. At about the time this line was completed, the presence of fluorine in harmful concentrations was discovered in the water. This problem was submitted to the International Filter Co. and in November 1937 a plant of its design was put in operation for treating the water to remove the fluorine. This plant proved entirely successful,

Waste of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few years after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained, but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested, but without any illusions that it will be followed or that such attention will be paid to it. Average Recovery The actual average percentage of recovery of coal in the ground is not known. Many papers giving figures of recovery have been published but no definite base of measurement has been agreed upon by those presenting the data. As an example, the Pittsburgh bed can be considered—it has produced a greater output than any other and has been sold or leased at higher prices in place than any other coal bed. Over a large part of its area where high prices have prevailed it has been customary for many years to draw pillars. In these mines it has been usually assumed that the average recovery was higher than in other beds and percentages of recovery of 85 to 95 per cent are usually said to be realized. In all of these mines, however, it has been customary to leave from 4 to 8 in. in the bottom, and 10 to 16 in. in the roof; thus from 14 to 24 in. of coal has been left in the mines out of a total seam thickness of about 96 in., or 15 to 25 per cent of the total coal. No attempt is made to mine this coal for metallurgical purposes, owing to its impurities, although this unmined coal is of excellent quality and better than much of the coal used for steam purposes. If we add to this discard the coal usually lost in mining and those parts of the bed 'that must be left because of bad seam conditions, barrier pillars, reservations for buildings, gas and oil wells, one can easily see that the actual recovery from this bed cannot be more than 65 to 75 per cent. In addition, the rooster or rider or wild coal over the mining bed—often 3 to 4 ft. of coal, high in ash and sulphur but still good steam coal—is hardly ever mined, nor is any attempt made to mine it. It is safe to say that from a broad economic viewpoint not more than 50 to 60 per cent of the fuel value of this great seam is actually being recovered.

Based on laboratory tests conducted with the use of fresh core samples as well as a considerable amount of field data obtained from numerous water floods in northeastern Oklahoma, it appears that for any given oil saturation there is a critical maximum velocity above which the oil-recovery efficiency falls off very rapidly. In effect, when a water flood is operated above this critical velocity, the injected water-oil ratio rises extremely fast, thus shortening the economic life of the flood and reducing the ultimate oil recovery. This critical velocity apparently varies considerably with the percentage of oil saturation of the sand, so that in effect the higher the oil saturation at the beginning of a flood the higher the velocity that can be used successfully. Coal has been fighting a rear-guard action since the last World War. The battle against competitive fuels has been largely guerilla warfare with more sniping within the ranks than of organized opposition. Oil and natural gas are the fuels that over these twenty odd years have driven coal backward and out of many profitable markets. Now, somewhat timidly, the coal industry is trying a new weapon; namely, Research, or let us more properly say, Organized Research. Engineers have been designing this weapon for many years, supported by those interested in coal, including some coal producers. A part of this pioneer work has been Fundamental Research, the Ph.D. kind that is over the heads of most of us. Another part has been aimed at immediate objectives and realizable profits, the practical, man-in-the-street sort. That is Industrial Research. Enough has been accomplished to make a fair exhibit, but whether this new weapon will have sufficient fire power to rout the opposition, whether the industry will really go into production and use it, the next few years will tell. Need foR Coal Research To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous—rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privatelyfinanced research is just started in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 2 5 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200,-000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1 ,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.

The wall-building properties of salt-water drilling muds can be improved markedly by the addition of: (I) natural gums, such as traga-canth, karaya, and ghatti; (2) seaweeds, such as Irish moss; or (3) gelatinized starch. Results of laboratory tests have been confirmed by field trials. For drilling operations in which the mud becomes contaminated by salt, either through penetrating salt-bearing rocks or by addition of sea water to the mud, the added cost resulting from the use of one of the substances listed above is more than offset by freedom from stuck drill pipe and ease in running casing. Introduction It has been recognized for many years that oil production might be seriously hampered by infiltration of water from the drilling mud.l-4 As knowledge of the mechanism of the wall-building process advanced, methods were developed for evaluating the filtration characteristics of muds.5-ll The wall-building properties of freshwater muds are commonly regulated by the addition of bentonitic clays, or of agents to promote the dispersion of the natural mud solids. When strata bearing soluble salts are encountered in the course of drilling, the salts are incorporated in the mud; the clay solids are flocculated and water loss is increased tremendously. Methods gen-crally used in controlling filtration of freshwater muds are no longer applicable. The problem of reducing water loss from salt-water muds is not confined to any particular area, but is acute in parts of West Texas. Salt beds several hundred feet thick must be penetrated before the oil-bearing formation is reached. Since the formation drilled does not provide mud-making material, it is necessary to use large quantities of commercial clays, and even the best commercial clay does not afford relief from the problem of high filtration. A laboratory study has been made of methods of improving the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds, and some of the methods have been used in field practice. Laboratory Investigations Procedure Inasmuch as the immediate object of the investigation was the development of means of improving the wall-building properties of muds used in West Texas, an attempt was made to employ muds in the laboratory study comparable to those in field use. Samples of muds used in drilling the producing formations in six wells were secured. The properties of these samples are summarized in Table I, which lists the densities, viscosities, filtrations, and analyses of the filtrates for calcium, chloride, and sulphate. Viscosity was measured in the Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester8 at a pressure of 100 lb. per sq. in. Filtration rates are considerably higher than those of usual fresh-water muds, which amount to about 20 C.C. in 30 min. Water loss was so rapid in samples 4, 5 and 6 that filtration was complete in less than 10 min. and the values for 30 min. were extrapolated from the rates at shorter

Principles of fluid motion and turbulence which have been found to be of use in mixing and agitation problems are discussed, as well as suggested applications in extractive-metallurgy processes. Various types of impellers are described, together with other conditions that affect flow pattern and turbulence. The choice of equipment for particular requirements is considered, and equations for power input are given. Modern heavy-duty mixing and agitation equipment can take an increasingly important part in such extractive-metallurgy processes as solids handling, crystallizing and leaching, chemical operations, and flotation. Application of mixing and fluid-mechanics principles to extraction methods can lead to greater process rates and a resultant saving in time and money. MIXERS are being applied with increasing frequency to problems in the metallurgical industries. The increase represents in part the modernization of mechanical equipment used through the application of unitized drives, modern electric motors and speed reducers, and recently developed materials of construction. Some applications have resulted from process changes and the use of techniques for operations similar to those that have been demonstrated and proven in the chemical industry. Still more applications are being developed through the use of fluid-dynamics principles not previously recognized as applicable to these operations. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those principles of fluid motion and turbulence which have been found to be of use in mixing and agitation problems, and to suggest applications for them in the extractive-metallurgy processes. Modern mixing equipment has been designed to provide the fluid motion consistent with that best suited to different operations.' When properly applied, these more efficient fluid-handling mixers result in lower process-production costs. Metallurgical operations usually involve large amounts of solids. The characteristics of the ore control the process and only enough liquid is added to provide sufficient fluidity for handling and processing. The reactive part of the ore, the mineral value to be extracted, is likely to be low in percentage, and the quantity of reagent required is similarly low, but excessive dilution makes additional reagent necessary and therefore is undesirable. Thus, the primary problems in minerals processing are to handle as high a concentration of solids as possible and to distribute reagents uniformly. These pulps, or slurries, are in a range of solids concentration where hindered settling rates apply, and care must be taken to agitate and mix sufficiently to maintain suspension and flow throughout the equipment. Such slurries have high densities which are the weighted average of the components and viscosities that are spoken of as "effective viscosities" but are difficult to evaluate. It is convenient to separate metallurgical operations involving mixers and agitators into three categories: solids handling, mechanical or physical operations, and chemical operations. In each of these categories fluid motion is required to maintain suspension, to distribute surface-active agents, to blend components and reactants, and to induce high rates of chemical reaction. After a discussion of some basic principles of mixing and agitation, examples of application to the three categories will follow.
