BERYLLIUM has always been a difficult material to prepare for metallographic examination. Severe surface deformation occurs during mechanical grinding and polishing, and a suitable bright-field etchant has not been developed. Certain electrolytic techniques produce satisfactory polishes, but these techniques have not yielded entirely consistent results. Furthermore, they have not provided satisfactory bright-field etches. The purpose of this paper is to describe an electrolytic polishing technique that can also provide an excellent bright-field etch. In addition to the bright-field etch, other advantages of this technique are excellent reproducibility, rapidity, and ease of polishing and etching. Experimental Technique. Specimen Preparation. Beryllium specimens may be either mounted or unmounted for the use of this technique, and the size of the specimens is not important. Specimens with surface areas up to 4 sq cm have been electrolytically polished and etched successfully with this technique. The most important requirement is to provide a good electrical contact to the specimens, preferably on the back of the specimens. When specimens are mounted, a hole is drilled through the back of the mount so that the specimen can be contacted with a probe. Conventional metallographic grinding techniques are used to prepare the specimens for electrolytic polishing. The specimens are ground on silicon carbide papers. Grinding through the usual series of papers down to the 600-grit paper is recommended to minimize the electropolishing time, although successful electrolytic polishes and etches have been obtained by grinding only through the coarser papers. A continuous flow of water is used during grinding to provide lubrication and to minimize contamination. Mechanical polishing is not required because high rates of material removal are achieved with the electrolytic polishing. Polishing. Most of the results reported in this paper were obtained with a "Disa-Electropol", manufactured by Struers Scientific Instruments of Copenhagen, Denmark. Satisfactory results have also been obtained with the conventional beaker technique of electrolytic polishing, however, the conditions applicable to both the Disa unit and the beaker technique will be described. Stainless-steel cathodes are used in both techniques. In the beaker technique, a flat cathode, with an area at least twice that of the specimen, is used, and the specimen is held parallel to the cathode. The distance between the specimen and the cathode affects the quality of the electropolish. This distance is set at about 7 mm in the Disa unit; the same distance produces the best results in the beaker technique. Specimen-cathode distances greater than about 20 mm produce considerable relief, while distances less than 7 mm cause high current densities that are difficult to control. An electrolyte of 2 pct HC1, 2 pct HNO3, and 2 pct HCIOl in ethylene glycol gives the most satisfactory results for both electrolytic polishing and etching. This electrolyte was developed by altering the composition of a similar electrolyte used for electrolytic lapping1 and adding HClOl to improve the etching characteristics of the electrolyte. Variations of from 0.25 pct to as much as 5 pct of each of the acids do not significantly affect the results, but the greatest amount of control and reproducibility can be obtained with the composition of 2 pct of each acid. Generally, lesser amounts of the acids produce lower polishing and etching rates, while greater amounts of acids cause high current densities that are difficult to control.

The symposium on production for the year 1942 contains no papers on the foreign situation except those on Argentina and Mexico. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts From Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a Rope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone.

The general energy equation, including change in kinetic energy, was solved by numerical integration and used to evaluate simplifying assumptions and application practices over a wide range of conditions. When extreme conditions were encountered, sizable errors were caused by large integration intervals, application of Simpson's rule and neglecting change in kinetic energy. A maximum error of only 1.31 percent was caused by assuming temperature and compressibility constants at their average value. It was discovered that a discontinuity can develop in the integral for the injection case. This discontinuity indicates a point of zero pressure change and is an inflection point in the pressure traverse. INTRODUCTION When a pressure in a gas well is to be calculated, one of the first decisions is to select a method of calculation. In many instances, this selection becomes a problem because the literature, at best, provides an evaluation of any method for only a limited range of conditions. Once a method has been selected, a question often arises as to the size of the calculation interval which should be used. The question regarding calculation interval arises because an analytic solution is not obtainable and approximate solutions must be used. This paper presents an evaluation of major assumptions and application practices of probably the two most widely used methods for calculating steady-state single-phase gas well pressures. The two methods are Cullender and Smith1-" (numerical integration), and average temperature and com-pressibility. The Cullender-Smith method assumes that change in kinetic energy is negligible and is normally applied in two steps with a Simpson's rule correcton. The average temperature and compressibility method, in addition to neglecting kinetic energy change, asumes that temperature and compressibility are constant at their average values. This method is normally applied for wellhead shut-in pressures of less than 2,000 psi, and in one step. Computer programs were written to compute bottom-hole pressure with and without the assumptions, using various approaches. Values of input parameters investigated are shown in Table 1. Flow rate was limited to a maximum of 5,000 and 10,000 Mcf/D for tubing sizes of 1.610 and 1.995 in. ID, respectively. Flow rate was also limited to 10,000 Mcf/D for a tubing size of 2.441 in. ID when wellhead flowing pressure was 100 psia. These limitations were imposed on flow rate so as not to exceed sonic velocity. The z factor routine available necessitated limiting bottom-hole temperature to 240F and wellhead pressure to 3,000 psia. Pressures were compared on the basis of percent deviation from the trapezoidal integration of Eq. l or 2 at 100-ft intervals. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1,000-ft interval solution would differ from a 50-ft interval solution by less than 0.25 percent; therefore, the 100-ft interval was chosen for a base. For the purpose of comparison, deviations less than 1 percent were considered insignificant. where 111.1 qeC2/d p = kinetic energy term. Eqs. 1 and 2 can be evaluated numerically at specific depths using the trapezoidal rule as shown by Cullender and Smith. Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The thickness of the sludge capping varies between a few centimetres and three metres (Peterson, 1996). INTRODTUCTION The use of spiral concentrators for processing fine coal particles is an old idea that has recently gained acceptance in the 11.S. coal industry. It was not onti1 the Australian Minerals Industry developed a spiral concentrator specifically for separating coal from ash in the latter 1970's and early 1980's that spiral concentrators were seriously considered as viable equipment for processing fine coal. The Wright Coal Spiral was introduced in 1980, the Mineral Deposits Limited Mark 10 Coal Spiral was introduced in 1982, and the Vickers Wyong Coal Spiral was introduced in the latter part of 1984. Each spiral design was different and utilized constant profile troughs, constant pitch troughs, compound profile troughs, and various splitter arrangements. Mineral Deposits Limited has combined the best features of the compound profile trough and constant pitch trough with critically-placed splitters to develop the MDL LD4 spiral concentrator which is a truly efficient coal washing spiral. This spiral concentrator was introduced into the U.S. Coal Industry in 1987. Recently, Mineral Engineering Technology of the United Kingdom and Multotec of South Africa have introduced their own coal spiral designs. Spiral concentrators were first installed in fine coal processing circuits in the Australian, South African, and Canadian Coal Industries in the early 1980's and in the U.S. Coal Industry in 1985. SPIRAL CONCENTRATOR SEPARATION PROCESS The separation process that occurs within the spiral concentrator trough is very complex, as it is a combination of three gravity separation processes. When the coal slurry first enters the spiral trough, each coal and ash particle and the water is subjected to centrifugal forces. These forces cause the water, light coal particles, fine heavy ash particles, and medium middlings particles to the outer vertical portion of the spiral trough. The coarse ash particles and the coarse middling particles remain on the inside of the spiral trough. The center or transitional area of the trough contains a mixture of middlings particles and near-gravity material that is present in the slurry, as shown in Figure 1. At the same time the coal and ash particles are suhjected to centrifugal forces, the trough design (both profile and pitch) causes the particles to be subjected to flowing film and stratified bed separations. The combination of these three separations, whose efficiency is dictated by the spiral troogh design, will effect the separation of the lighter coal particles from the heavier ash and middlings particles. As the slurry flows down the spiral, the profile and pitch design of the trough will counteract the centrifugal forces on the fine, heavy ash particles and fine middlings particles and cause them to migrate from the vertical portion of the trough to the center or inner portion of the trough. At the same time, any heavy particles trapped in the transitional area of the trough will be forced to migrate to the inner edge of the trough and any coal particles will be forced to migrate to the outer edge of the trough. SPIRAL SPLI'TTEP ARRANGEMENT The critical placement of splitters along the inner edge of the trough for removal of the heavy ash particles as the slurry flows down the trough further enhances the separation of the coal particles. At the bottom of the spiral trough are product splitters arranged to make a final separation of the slurry stream into clean coal, middlings, and refuse products.

A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources. As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence of foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines had conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically-feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. This paper analyzes some of the major difficulties which have been encountered in previously proposed processes for treating low-grade manganese ores and discusses a process which may circumvent many of these difficulties. Vast deposits of low-grade manganese ore exist in the U.S., yet domestic production is insignificant compared to the more than 2 million tons of ore imported yearly into this country.' A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources.2 As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence on foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. Although a great many processes have been proposed for treating domestic manganese resources, a failing of many of them is that too many steps are involved for economical operation.' Some of the major processes that have been proposed were reviewed by Norman and Kirby.3,4 Chlorination processes have become increasingly useful as a means of recovering valuable metals from raw materials, because the relative cost of chlorine (Cl2) and hydrogen chloride (HC1) has decreased through the years, and because the corrosion resistance of materials of construction has been improved. The objective of these processes is to form metal chlorides that are more volatile or water-soluble than are the corresponding oxides or sulfides; these compounds then can be separated from the gangue or other minerals by volatilization or leaching. Several chlorination processes for the recovery of manganese have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines5-8 and others; the major chlorination processes were reviewed in 1963, and their main features were compared.4 In all these processes, the simultaneous leaching or volatilization of iron chlorides with manganese chloride (MnCl2) is a problem, and the more iron that is present, generally the greater the problem. The leaching step is not highly selective, and the product of this step is, at best, suitable only for the production of ferromanganese or for further processing to remove iron. The product of the volatilization step is, in all cases, a mixture of iron and manganese chlorides that contains too much iron even for ferromanganese production, and must undergo additional processing steps for iron removal. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The literature indicates that the desired chlorination reactions will proceed at practical rates at temperatures near 1200°K (927°C). Free energy changes at 1200°K for the critical steps of the reduction and chlorination reactions9-11 follow: Most of the research on chlorination processes for manganese recovery has been done with HC1 rather than with C12, for the following three main reasons: 1) Recycling of the chlorinating agent, which is economically vital, appeared to be easier for HC1

WHY DO AN AUDIT? There is increased enforcement of environmental laws and regulations at State and Federal levels with attendant steep fines and even the possibility of jail sentences. We are all aware of environmental and public health and safety incidences (i.e., Love Canal, Bhopal) which have led to stringent laws and regulations (i.e., CERCLA, RCRA, SARA). In some cases, the courts have specified that a company institute an audit program as a condition of settlement of claims which related to lack of environmental control. The U.S.EPA issued an Environmental Auditing Policy Statement in the November 8, 1985 Federal Register (pp. 46504-46508) which encourages the use of environmental auditing by regulated entities. Elements of what EPA considers to be an effective environmental auditing program are outlined and briefly explained. These factors combine to indicate why there is a growing number of companies which have instituted an audit program. Briefly, the program can and should be used to monitor compliance with environmental regulations and corporate policy, to prevent violations, to improve policies and procedures, to raise the level of environmental awareness, to encourage communication among operations and all management levels about environmental problems, and to measure risks and control costs. AMAX Inc. has had an environmental audit program since the early 1970's. The AMAX Environmental Affairs Department, working with the Law Department, oversees and coordinates environmental audits and analyzes the findings which an audit reveals. Facilities are audited on a regular schedule; those having the greatest potential for environmental liabilities are audited at least annually; other facilities are audited less frequently. The question of who performs the AMAX audits was settled in favor of the audit team being independent of personnel from the facility being surveyed. Other methods of auditing could be the following: - Independent contractor (Appendix A) - Combination of independent contractor and in-house staff - Self-audit by site personnel The merits and demerits of who should conduct the audit can be analyzed to suit your particular needs. Next you need to decide on the procedure for the audit and the form for reporting and follow up. Environmental publications referenced in Appendix B can be helpful to you at this point. After deciding on the form of auditing, a schedule is prepared and followed to the closest extent possible. This schedule should be published and distributed to the sites so facilities know when they are being audited. This is not designed to be "a game of hide and seek." Various elements of the AMAX Audit Program are as follows: Team selection Pre-visit preparation Site visit Exit interview Report Using the audit Follow-up Team Selection The usual make-up of the team is the audit manager, the environmental specialist who normally provides assistance to the site or has knowledge about the operation, and a legal representative if his or her schedule allows. The legal representative will review the findings of the audit team if a personal visit is not timely or necessary. Size of the team can be expanded, but a minimum of the audit manager and the environmental specialist is best. Two sets of observations are better than one. The environmental specialist can also provide the rapport which is beneficial to creating the appropriate tone so that the site people will be as cooperative as possible. This is not to be an antagonistic exercise.

GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The mineral deposit of this case study can be described as a "typical" porphyry copper deposit of the southwestern USA and northern Mexico mineral province. The copper mineralization is related to Laramide age intrusives of intermediate composition which have been intruded into older, mostly crystalline, host rocks. Post Laramide deformation and faulting have subjected the deposit to erosion, leaching, and enrichment processes, which have created a secondarily enriched chalcocite zone. Later basin and range faulting down dropped the ore zone, resulting in deep burial beneath late Tertiary conglomerates and gravels, thus preserving the deposit from further erosion and oxidation. Lower grade chalcopyrite mineralization constitutes the primary zone underlying the enriched blanket. MANAGEMENT OF SAMPLE DATA Sample data were obtained from exploration diamond drill holes that were collared vertically and drilled with surface rigs. Most of the holes were surveyed downhole and found to deviate significantly from the vertical. The data were keypunched from original drill hole logs to formats as described in Chapter 6. Zone Zone Sample Sample Coordinates Sample Assays Leach InterLength Northing Fasting Elev Total Cu Oxide Cu (etc) face] MINERAL BOUNDARY PROBLEM AND TREATMENT According to the geologic description, at least three mineral zones are present within the ore limits, as well as fault boundaries and a buried topographic surface, each of which have to be considered. The interfaces of the various mineralogical and geological boundaries were identified as accurately as possible in each drill hole by the project geologist, the location of the interface was surveyed in the computer program in association with the nearest sample intercept to the interface (note last field of line 3). Thus, the boundary is represented as a point in 3D space at each intersecting drill hole. The linear interpolation (LINTERP) program then searched the last field of the surveyed record to find the top of each mineral zone, or geologic boundary, and read the coordinates associated with that sample point. The program then used the coordinates to compute an interpolated surface between all existing data points as described in Chapter 11. A contour map was plotted for each of the computed surfaces and reviewed by the project geologist. Where the surfaces were poorly defined due to lack of real drill hole information, the geologist, at times, inserted a "pseudo" drill hole intercept according to his best judgment and feeling for the configuration of the surface, and such points were entered into the data stream for LINTERP. Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn't "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark's Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today's dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

A considerable quantity of experimental hydrocarbon K-factor data has been correlated as a function of component identity, temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. To utilize these correlations effectively, convergence pressure must be determined accurately, particularly for volatile mixtures near their critical states. This paper presents phase diagrams that illustrate physically the meaning of convergence pressure. A new method, referred to hereafter as the "critical composition method", will be outlined for calculating convergence pressure. An example calculation has been included to illustrate how to use this new technique. INTRODUCTION The principle of hydrocarbon phase composition calculations as applied to such diverse problems as optimizing separator performance or predicting fluid compositions at various stages of reservoir depletion is the same. Usually, temperature, pressure and the numbers of moles of the various components of the fluid contained in a given volume are known. Questions answered by the phase calculation are what fraction of the total mass of fluid exists in each of the equilibrium phases, and what are the mole fractions of the various components in the two phases? To answer these questions the Natural Gasoline Supplymen's Assoc. (NGSMA) has correlated a considerable quantity of K-factor data as a function of temperature, pressure, component identity and convergence pressure.l To use these correlations to obtain the best answers possible, one must be able to calculate the convergence pressure. This is particularly true for over-all fluid compositions in the neighborhood of the critical state. STATEMENT OF THEORY Use of convergence pressure as a correlating parameter is based on a postulate similar to the law of corresponding states used in correlating PVT data of hydrocarbon gases. This postulate, which proposes convergence pressure as a correlating parameter, has been stated as follows: "The equilibrium vaporization constant for one component in a complex system is the same as the equilibrium constant at the same temperature and pressure for the same number or kind of components, providing only that the convergence pressures of the two systems are exactly the same at the same temperature and that the components are of the same homologous series".2 This law, as with all laws of physics, cannot be proven theoretically. It can only be justified by experimental data supporting its premises. Arguments have been made that this law violates Gibb's phase rule. For example, consider a four-component system. By Gibb's phase rule, which is thermodynamically rigorous, f = c — P + 2 =4, for a four-component, two-phase system. Thus, four independent intensive variables must be specified to establish completely all the intensive variables of the equilibrium phases. On the other hand, according to convergence pressure theory, only three variables need be specified for any mixture containing four different components. These variables are temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. Thus, the two laws appear to be in conflict. However, the convergence pressure postulate is more restrictive than Gibb's phase rule. It applies only to mixtures of the same homologous series. Hence, these two concepts are not in disagreement. INTRODUCTION The time period from the detailed feasibility study to the post investment audity usually ranges from three to eight years depending upon the nature of the mining project considered. It is the only after the post investment audit that we know the adequacy of the assumptions made concerning operational risk assessment in the detailed feasibility or acquisition economics. The post investment audit results from numerous mining projects can best be described by a verse by John Greenleaf Whittier's Maaud Muller. It reads "For all sad words of tongue or pen the saddest are these 'It might have been!"' Dissecting the negative results of numerous mining projects we find faulty assumptions concerning markets, geology, capital investment and operational risk assessment. Although in hindsight many of these assumptions could have been considered impossible or impracticle to have forecast with any degree of certainty, we find that refined assumptions concerning operational risk assessment could have been made with only a modicum of additional "Due Diligence". Anyone who invests in a mining property should employ a much higher discount rate of future cash flow, (usually in the minimum range of 25%-30%), than he would expect from such safe investments as Treasury Bills or high grade Utility Bonds. The nature of this steep discount translates to a large uncertainty concerning the timing and actualization of assumptions contained in the detailed feasibility study. We must remember that when a project gets beyond 20 years, any contribution to the value of the project of cash flow is minimal due to the nature of the discounting process. Thus for each full or partial day lost in the development or early operation stage of a project, the financial impact will be greater than similar lost days later on in the project. Adequate operational risk assissment is particularly critical when bidding on competitive tenders for coal deposists in remote locations such as the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia. Because of the market attractiveness of these coal deposits for supplying end users in the Far East, Middle East and Europe, state governments require competitive tender biddings via the Authority to Prospect process. Front end bonuses and super royalty payments must be commited before the actual mining conditions are known. Time to submit firm offers from the actual request for proposal vary from 90 to 120 days. Thus any operational risk assessment must be detailed, realistic and reflective of the actual project. When one searches the literature, one finds limited qualitative data on operational risk assessment in valuation papers. Usually this facet of valuation takes a secondary role to such areas as reserves, markets, and environmental considerations. When one comes to the question of operational risk assessment more often than not one finds the use of "rules-of-thumb", such as tons per man shift, average production, average seam height, etc., are used to forecast results on which banks and other financial institutions are required to make investment decisions. Because of the extremely competitive environment of the 1970's and 1980's numerous financial institutions approved loans without adequate "Due Diligence", and are currently paying a steep price in terms of non performing loans and charge offs. INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m'j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. Introduction Since its creation in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a wide-ranging program of research on mining technology. Over the years, the Bureau has perhaps become best known for its accomplishments in mine health and safety technology, a field that has been the object of much public attention. Nevertheless, the Bureau's program in other areas of mining technology has always been strong and remains so today. A distinguishing feature of the current effort is its tendency to concentrate on high-risk, high-gain projects. Throughout the federal research establishment, the Administration's policy has been to phase out short-term research that could be performed by private industry, in favor of long-terms projects that industry cannot usually afford to fund. This tendency is evident in the following account of the highlights of the Bureau's current mining technology research program. Underground Mining Technology Fragmentation. Research studies on fragmentation have focused on nonexplosive concepts. If successfully developed, these concepts would lend themselves to continuous automated operation and reduce time and costs of fragmentation in underground mines. A special laboratory-scale device to investigate ripper cutting was designed and fabricated in 1982. Experiments were conducted with large drag cutters to develop an efficient cutting technique for hard rock. Tests were successfully conducted with 76- and 152-mm (3¬and 6-in.) bits in rocks up to 138-MPa (20,000-psi) compressive strength. Because of the success of these initial tests, larger-scale proof-of-concept tests are planned. To prepare for these tests, a tester capable of cutting a 1.8-m (6-ft) opening was fabricated. This device will allow ripper cutting to be carried out at full scale, and will also allow mucking and holddown requirements to be investigated. Preliminary estimates indicate that this concept has the potential to double excavation rates while reducing costs up to 30%. Mobile Hydraulic Monitor. A mobile hydraulic monitor system was designed, fabricated, and used to mine the St. Peter sandstone at an average rate of 22 t/h (25 stph) from a face in Martin-Marietta's foundry sand mine at Clayton, IA. A slurry transport system worked in tandem with jet cutting, resulting in a continuous mining and transport system. Problems with spray from the jet hitting the sandstone showed that a remote-controlled mobile monitor was needed at a station 15 m (50 ft) from the face, so the operator would have a clear view of the face and be safely out of the backwash. Crushers. Research on crushing systems to improve efficiency in underground mines is continuing. Final testing of a low-profile, portable crusher for underground applications has begun. A system for handling oversize feed to the crusher was conceived and tested. Underground crushing systems, portable enough to be kept near the face, offer considerable improvement in materials handling because main haulage by conveyor is often less costly. Hoists. Research to increase hoisting efficiency and speed and to reduce energy requirements has led to experimental ore skips. The skips feature guide rollers to improve riding characteristics, bearing improvement at critical locations, and weight savings of about 1.8 t (2 st). An experimental aluminum skip was installed last year at Kerr McGee's Church Rock mine. Performance is being monitored under production conditions. A portable service hoist for low-cost, efficient movement of men and supplies in raises between mine levels was designed, fabricated, and tested on the surface. The investigation of a 50 pct Co alloy was undertaken to determine whether there was any direct correlation between the structure and properties of Co-Fe alloys which were given various magnetic heat treatments. The magnetic anisotropy and texture of the 0.002-in. cold-reduced 98 pct material tend to decrease and change in nature with increasing temperature of the recrystallization anneal. Annealing samples in a magnetic field had little effect on either the magnetic properties or texture. However, cooling them in a magnetic field greatly improved their magnetic properties. THE beneficial influence of a magnetic field applied during the heat treatment of certain soft magnetic materials has been known for a long time. Early work showed that the presence of a magnetic field of a few oersteds during the heat treatment of Fe-Ni alloys will cause a large increase in maximum permeability. A pronounced increase in the residual induction which is produced by the magnetic anneal causes the hysteresis loop to approach the shape of a rectangle. Such results are beneficial since the desired properties are high permeability, high induction at maximum permeability, high residual induction, and low coercive force. More recently Libsch and coworkers1 studied the effect of magnetic annealing on the hysteresis properties of a series of Co-Fe alloys prepared from powders. They observed good response for the 35 and 50 pct Co alloys but little response for the 42 pct Co alloy. They pointed out that this was somewhat surprising since the 42 pct alloy has a high linear magnetostriction and zero crystal anisotropy and similar conditions in Fe-Ni alloys give excellent response to magnetic annealing. They found optimum properties to be at the 50 pct composition with residual induction, Br = 19,000 gauss and coercive force, Hc = 0.68 oersteds after the magnetic anneal. Before the magnetic anneal these values were B, = 12,600 gauss and Hc = 1.15 oersteds. The optimum treatment consisted of cooling from above the y-a transformation temperature to 900°C in a field of 20 oersteds, holding 11/2 hr at 900°C, then cooling at a rate of 20° to 25°C per min in the field to below 230°C. Cooling rate mainly affected coercive force with the value decreasing from 1.09 to 0.88 oersteds as the rate was increased from 3° to 48°C per min. Cooling from 1020" to 900°C in a field followed by further cooling to 230°C without the field gave properties decidedly inferior to those for samples annealed with the field applied throughout the cooling. They concluded that to get the best properties the samples must be cooled in a field to a threshold temperature above which the alloy is plastic enough to be affected by magnetostriction. In this respect the holding temperature must be high enough so that the alloy exhibits good plasticity to permit the optimum orienting of magnetic domains by relaxation of magnetostriction. In contrast, the holding time was of less significance for there was little improvement when the time exceeded 1/2 hr. The improvement in properties effected by magnetic annealing has usually been attributed to the establishment of a domain texture caused by the "freezing in" of magnetic strains. On the other hand, Smoluchowski and Turner2,3 apparently found that a magnetic field applied during recrystallization could alter the crystal texture. 0. R. LYONS*—I know that we are all interested in hearing about problems that other people have. To most of the people from the eastern part of the United States, this kind of coal preparation is completely different. It represents washing difficulties that most operators have never experienced, or, if they have, they have refused to consider them because there are coals that are much easier to wash and, therefore. they leave the more difficult ones alone for the time being. E. R. McMILLAN†—I think the au-thors have summarized the material very well. Dr. Yancey has spent a great many years in the study of washing coals, as has Mr. Geer. I might comment briefly on some of the plants that were mentioned, plants with which I have had some con-nection, particularly those of our own company, the Northwestern Improve-ment Co. I would like to point out this: that ill each case, a great deal of work was done in the way of preliminary studies of washability of the coal before plants were built. The first plant of any size built in Roslyn field was mentioned in the paper. This central cleaning plant was designed and built to handle coal from three different mines. I might say that prior to 1935, the year in which the plant was built, the coal was used largely as railway fuel, close to a million tons annually. But as mining increased in depth, it became increasingly difficult to separate and gob much of the impurities underground, with the result that the run-of-mine coal became so high in ash that the railroad eventually was forced to consider installing some kind of preparation plant at the mine. We spent about a year in preliminary studies in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines to find out the best type of plant that would clean the coal. The result, as Mr. Geer has explained to you, is a rather complicated plant, but it is doing a very satisfactory job. We have, however, made a number of changes and improve-n~euts since it was first built. The last addition was the, installation of a cen- trifugal drier to dewater the minus ¼ in. size. We are now contemplating installing heat driers for further drying of minus ¼ in. We use Vissac heat driers for drying the stoker coal, the ¾ to in. The demand for drier coal, for both railway and industrial use, is forcing us to further drying of the coal. The plant that was mentioned as having been built in Pierce County, during the war, was a government sponsored plant. I happen to have had some connection with its design, construction and initial operation. We did what we thought then, and still think, was a very thorough job of preliminary studies in cooperation with the Burea of Mines of the coal from that field. The plant was as good a plant as could be built with the equipment available at that time, 1943. The plant that was mentioned as having been built at Ravensdale for treating the McKay coal was rebuilt about two years ago, and in addition to the modified Elmore jig washer that was mentioned. we added a coucentrating table for re-cleaning the minus 3/32 in. Higher freight rates and better methods of beneficiation now may make it more economical to open inferior deposits closer to a glass factory than to work higher-grade deposits farther away. Nature of impurities and special treatments as well as common practice of sulphuric acid leaching are described. HISTORICAL concepts of the economics of the glass-sand industry are changing rapidly. The greatly expanded demand for glass containers combined with higher freight rates on raw materials and manufactured products have induced a migration of glass factories toward densely populated centers and the creation of new standards of place value for substandard sand deposits. This migration has been facilitated by the construction of pipelines to bring cheaper natural gas and liquid fuel to large cities and may be further speeded by the adoption of modern mineral dressing methods to permit economical utilization of local raw materials. Our national resources of naturally high-grade silica sand are abundant, but most of the best deposits are situated so far from large centers of population that it now costs $3.00 to $5.00 a ton to carry the sand from the mine to the optimum site for a factory making beverage bottles, scientific and electrical glassware, and miscellaneous blown and pressed ware for local markets. It follows that on the basis of freight savings alone it may be economical to use material from inferior deposits closer to the factory even though the f.O.b. cost of mining and treatment may be much higher than at a higher grade deposit farther away. Particle-size distribution is a feature of glass-sand specifications. As long as glassmakers insisted upon having their sand principally coarser than 100-mesh, any material was automatically excluded from consideration that could not be purified without fine grinding or other drastic treatment which greatly reduces the size of the quartz grains. However, re- cent large-scale tests in Norway' showed that finely-crushed quartz used in a soda-lime-silica glass batch caused it to melt and become refined appreciably faster than when ordinary coarse (Belgian) sand was employed. Dust losses were negligible. Since the pre-war cost of sand was only 3 pct of the manufacturing cost of the glass, it was deemed economical to pay twice as much for crushed quartz because of the saving in wear and tear on the furnace walls. In the author's unverified opinion, sand ranging in size between 150 and 400-mesh would probably be superior to that in the more usual range of 20 to 100-mesh. Former objections to fine sand (other than dust) were doubtless fostered by the natural concentration of impurities in the finer sizes. Ordinarily the most objectionable, as well as the commonest, impurity from the standpoint of the manufacturer of any but the cheaper qualities of colored glass is iron. No natural sands are really pure silica. Even water-clear quartz crystals are likely to contain impurities in the form of solid solution as well as inclusions which cannot be eliminated except by chemical treatment that will break down the silica lattice. Pure white pegmatite quartz will usually analyze 0.01 pct or more of iron oxide, and ordinary vein quartz and the quartz grains in most

During 1941, the total production of crude oil in New York state was 5,185,000 bbl. This represents a small increase over the average for the past five years. From 1921, when the annual production of the state amounted to only 988,000 bbl., there was a regular annual increase in production (excepting one or two years) until the 5,000,000-bbl. mark was reached in 1937, After more than 20 years of oil recovery by flooding methods, it was generally believed, until a few months ago, that the rate of production was nearly at its peak and within a few years the fields would experience a gradual decline as the thicker sands became exhausted and the thinner ones could be worked only at increasing costs. As a result of the present emergency, however, unusual efforts are being made, in spite of higher costs of operation, to increase the output of Pennsylvania grade oil, to which the New York product belongs. Since most of any increased production would be obtained by flooding, and since floods travel slowly, no large increase in production can be expected for some months to come. During the first year, 10 or 15 per cent increase could be obtained, but maximum production, an increase of perhaps 40 per cent, could not be expected until some time during the second or third year. In the Allegany fields, which account for two thirds of the state's oil production, 1246 wells, including water-intake wells, were drilled during the year; 390 more than in the preceding year and 590 more than in 1939. It is evident that much of the best oil territory has already been developed. As producers move toward edge properties and thinner sands, returns will be smaller, whereas costs remain the same or, under war conditions, become higher. It is estimated that at least 60 million barrels of oil is in sight and will be produced from the thicker sands by present recovery methods. In the thinner sands and edge properties, some 35 million additional barrels can be produced at a profit only if prices become higher. In view of the fact that there is little hope of finding new oil pools in New York, one of the future problems of the oil producer will be to obtain adequate returns for increased production costs. The year started with a posted price of $2.15 per barrel of crude. There were five successive price increases until the high of the year was reached at $2.98 on Aug. 14. Eight days later the Office of Price Administration directed that the price be reduced to the June level of $2.75 a barrel, which remained in effect to the end of the year. With rising costs of operation, it is feared that many of the smaller properties cannot continue production unless the Federal price cut is revoked. During the year, Allegany Refiners Inc., a local enterprise founded in 1933, with plant at Bolivar, western Allegany County, increased its refining capacity from 1000 to 1500 bbl. daily. At the same time equipment was added to make the plant a complete lubricating-oil refinery, including facilities for the refining of wax into the finished product. The Institute has lost a valued member by the death of Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. He bore the name of one who was largely instrumental in founding the Institute, and to whose support and guidance as active member, Vice-President, and President, the Institute owes. much. Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was the nephew of the late Eckley B. Coxe. He held a large interest in the coal estates owned and developed by his family, and he was thus naturally led to take a continuing interest in mining matters, and for years and up to the time of his death was a full member of the Institute. He died at his residence, Drifton, Pa., on Sept. 20 last, aged 44. He was a member of the class of '93 of the University of Pennsylvania,. of which great institution he was a devoted alumnus. His educational and charitable activities were numerous, but his chief life-work and interest was in archeological investigation and research in Egypt, carried on through the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania of which Museum he was President. The discoveries made by the various expeditions financed and directed by him, and the notable publications issued by his direction and at his expense, chronicling the results, are among the most important researches ever made of buried Egypt. Mr. Coxe was a member of the International Historical Society and of many educational and charitable organizations. By his will, among other bequests, he left $500,000 to the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania and $100,000 to the University, the income of the latter fund to be applied to increasing the salaries of the professors of the Institution. He also left $100,000 to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, of which he was a manager, and in addition thereto $10,000 of which the income is to be applied in providing Christmas presents for .the child patients, and in providing an annual dinner for the patients and attendants of the hospital. He bequeathed $50,000 to Leonard Hall, an associate mission of the Episcopal Church, at South Bethlehem, Pa., $25,000 to the Epileptic Hospital and Colony Farm (Philadelphia) ; $50,000 to the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Hospital and Infirmary for Nervous Diseases; $15,000 to the United Charities of Hazleton, Pa., the income to be applied to the salaries of nurses; and $25,000 to the Mining and Mechanical Institute of the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, founded by his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, and of which Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was an active trustee up to the time of his death. This Institute is known as one of the best preparatory schools for technical education in Pennsylvania, and is mainly devoted to extending an opportunity for education by day and night schools to the boys and young men of the Anthracite Region. Its principal is an alumnus of Lehigh University; it has an able local Board of Trustees, and an Advisory Board consisting of the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, the President of Lafayette College, and the President of Lehigh University, all three of which institutions have established prize scholarships in the institute.
