"The future of mining will be characterized not only by the application of modern technology, but also by the harmonization of economic, environmental and social issues. These areas set major future challenges which are complex and demand extensive knowledge. As an example, mining of highly complex orebodies for the supply of often critical raw materials, needs to consider technically demanding and cost-intensive extraction issues. The amount of tailings, which need to be stored, increases with the amount of ore mined. Therefore, the negative impact on environment and society increases. Hence mining becomes expensive with regard to all three aspects: economy, environment and society. In view of a sustainable mining practice this challenge should be used as an opportunity. The positive impact should be maximized for present and future generations. The objective is to create and use the mining openings in an optimum way related to sustainability. The approach of Blue Mining, which focuses on energy and ergonomics in the field of Sustainable Development, enhances the closure planning by recommending subsequent usage of such openings for energy storage. The approach fosters among others the implementation of the 7th Goal for Sustainable Development defined by the United Nations with the assurance of access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The usage of underground storage increases the stability of solar and water power usage, which are otherwise unreliable. Blue Mining embeds these issues in the main planning effort long before groundbreaking. This approach involves experience from past and current projects. This paper introduces the concept of Blue Mining with respect to post-mining utilization of a mine for energy storage. Methods and perspectives are presented with examples covering best-practices and lessons-learned."

For at least five decades, a plume containing acidic metal-bearing water has been moving through the shallow alluvial aquifer along Pinal Creek in the Globe-Miami area. Two chemical facies of water are distinguished in the alluvial aquifer: (1) a metal-rich acidic plume with gram per liter concentrations of metals (primarily iron) and pH values between 3 and 5 and (2) neutralized water with a pH greater than 5, low concentrations of metals, and high concentrations of sulfate and manganese. Historically, the acid plume has moved through the aquifer at an average velocity of 0.6 m/day, ten times slower than the average pore velocity of groundwater in the aquifer calculated using the Darcy equation. The rate of migration of the metal-rich plume is retarded by pH-dependent chemical reactions between acid water and the aquifer matrix. As acid water is neutralized by reaction with calcite, rising pH conditions in- crease the oxidation rate of iron and decrease its solubility resulting in the precipitation of ferric hydroxides. The formation of ferric hydroxides is a proton releasing reaction which main- tains acidic conditions. The acidit of the plume and the neutralization capacity of tKe aquifer are best assessed in terms of the iron content of the water and not the hydrogen ion activity computed from pH measurements. The parameters controlling plume migration are: (1) the calcite content of the aquifer (2) the iron acidity of plume water, and (3) the rates of acid neutralization and ferrous iron oxidation. A numerical solute transport and reaction model based on the concept of iron acidity effectively simulates the historical development of acidic conditions, predicts the behavior of the plume, and was used as a management tool to identify the most efficient and cost effective remedial strategy.

Underclays are associated with coals found in eastern Oklahoma. These coals are of bituminous rank and are in beds of Middle and Late Pennsylvanian age. They occur in an area of about 8,000 mi2, within the southern part of the Western Interior Coal Region. The rocks of the area consist of a thick series of sandstones, shales, underclays, coals, and limestones. There are more than 40 beds of bituminous coal in the state, but only 12 of these have been mined over large areas. The 12 are, from oldest to youngest: the lower Hartshorne, upper Hartshorne, McAlester (Stigler), upper McAlester, Cavanal, Rowe, Secor, Weir-Pittsburg, Mineral, Croweburg, Iron Post, and Dawson coals. None of the underclay associated with these coal beds is known to have been exploited commercially. Nine samples of underclay from beneath the Croweburg coal were collected over a wide area in the eastern Oklahoma coal field for evaluation. The underclays are usually shades of gray with brown or orange iron-oxide staining. Although soft and plastic in some places, they are generally hard and slickensided, and contain abundant carbonized plant fragments. Bulk chemical analyses, clay mineral identification, and ceramic tests were performed on each underclay sample. The dominant clay minerals are illite and kaolinite with some mixed-layer clays. Silica (Si02) ranges from 45.96% to 59.03% and alumina (Al2O3) varies from 14.98% to 23.60%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Re- search Center conducted the ceramic evaluations. Samples were slow fired from 1,000°C to 1,250°C in 50°C intervals. Bulk density, color, percent linear shrinkage, and percent absorption were determined for each slow fire test. All Croweburg underclay samples are best suited for building brick.

SINCE the discovery of von Laue, that a crystal forms a natural grating for X-rays, our knowledge of the structure of solids has gone forward with rapid strides. This progress is not only of purely scientific interest, but has also yielded direct technological results. One of the most valuable results is the broadening of our knowledge of the structure of pure metals and alloys. To promote these studies it is often desirable to have at our disposal pieces of metal consisting of one single crystal. As is so often the case in the natural sciences, we obtain the best results by making our earliest experiments on pure, simple materials and avoiding unnecessary complications. The Cryogen Laboratory at Leyden followed this method with much success, because the work was done at such low temperatures that the heat movement of the atoms was almost absent. Similarly we can simplify the studies of metals by leaving out of consideration the influence of the grain boundaries and the mutual influence of the crystals by using unicrystalline instead of polycrystalline metal. Methods of making single crystals have been scientifically studied during the past few years. Some methods were already known in the arts, but these have been improved and new methods have been developed. The methods for making metallic single crystals may be divided into the following groups: A. From the liquid state B. From the gaseous state C. Electrolytically D. The objective of the study is development of an analytic process based on rock and explosive properties which allows the prediction of the stress distributions and fracture zone around explosive charges. A computer program has been written for this purpose, using a finite difference approximation to the momentum equation, to describe the motion of the surrounding rock by step-wise integration. Its application provides ground motion data such as stress components, displacement and particle velocity as a function of position and time with respect to a spherical charge. The effect of tensile and shear failure on these ground motion parameters can be included. The analytic procedure contained within this program has been used to predict peak stress as a function of distance in rock for rock-explosive combinations for which field data exists to determine peak stress levels directly. Two methods have been used for the spherical charge which in the analysis replaces the actual cylindrical charges: instantaneous application of peak pressure to a charge having a radius equivalent in contained volume to a charge having a length to diameter ratio of 1, and gradual pressure build up to peak pressure with a charge radius equivalent in contained volume to the total charge used in the field test. The agreement with field data would appear best with the latter treatment. The peak stresses obtained are in closer agreement with field measured peak-stress and a better approximation to field stress wave duration exists in the case of gradual pressure build up. THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. The issue of dust control in underground coal mines has been extensively studied by both government and industry. This research work has resulted in many techniques which control the dust or help miners avoid it. Control techniques either prevent the dust from becoming airborne or cleanse the air before it can be inhaled. Avoidance measures minimize the exposure of miners to the airborne dust by blowing the dust away from work areas or making it unnecessary for a miner to occupy a dusty region. One of several successful dust control measures in continuous miner sections is the use of a machine mounted scrubber which cleanses the air and helps to prevent the contaminated air from reaching areas frequented by mine personnel. Research on the application of scrubbers on longwall shearers began in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. The most successful projects showed only moderate improvement when a scrubber system was mounted on a longwall shearer, and the less successful projects actually increased worker dust levels. There are many reasons that scrubbers have not been successfully applied on longwalls. The most significant of these is that longwalls have across the face ventilation and generally have high face air flows. Scrubbers tend to work best when they are the primary cause of ventilation. Therefore, their capture efficiencies on longwalls tend to suffer because of the exposure of the drums to the primary airflow. Other reasons scrubbers have not been implemented on longwall s include the successful application of an excellent water spray system, effective cutting techniques, and dispersion of dust sources. These techniques can help control drum generated dust, increase production, and limit the relative effectiveness of a scrubber.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. George W. Maynard, New York, N. Y.:—It is well known that there are many magnetite-mines of which the ore is too low-grade for direct use in the blast-furnace. For carrying out the sintering process, the preliminary step, in the case of magnetites, is the separation of the ore from the gangue by magnetic concentration. The resulting fine-grain product is very objectionable in the blast-furnace, and when used must be a very small percentage of the charge. The sintering process has saved the situation by furnishing a product which is absolutely ideal on account of its cellular structure. (In reply to questions by W. J. Tudor, and Joseph W. Richards, the following additional information was given by Dr. Maynard.) The percentage of iron in the product is determined entirely by the degree of concentration of the raw material and is practically not increased by the sintering operation. The magnetic concentrates at Port Henry and at the Benson and one or two other mines contain from 65 to 67 per cent. of metallic iron. The cost of sintering is from 39 to 41 cents per ton of product, including superintendence, depreciation, and repairs. The itemized figures are about as follows : Mixing (including labor), 24; power, 9; ignition, 5; repairs, 3; total, 41 cents. Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa.:—From a metallurgical standpoint I question the accuracy of the statement on p. 374: " C.—An increased reducibility of the iron so treated. (This has been conservatively estimated as 5 per cent. better than the best available ore.)" It seems to me that when a material is' sintered in this way, the constituents present, as lime, silica, and alumina, have a chance to form a compound with the iron oxide; that such a compound, if formed before the material goes into the blast-

Petroleum exploration in the Australian arid zone has been proceeding at an ever-increasing pace, subject to financial fluctuations, since the 1960's. The impacts of petroleum exploration in the arid zone are less than they would be for corresponding operations in. e.g. a forest area: in this context, Australia is fortunate in that its major petroleum producing (and prospective) , basins are offshore or in the arid zone. In addition. the other major sources of impact in the Austrlian arid zone, namely pastoralism, tourism, and rabbits, tend to be concentrated around areas of particular conservation significance, whereas petroleum exploration is not. Despite this, the cumulative impacts of exploration are sufficient to have caused concern to government regulatory authorities and some sectors of the general public. Exploration is now subject to a range of environmental constraints with various degrees of legal enforceability. To enable exploration to continue without public opposition, the industry, and government agencies charged with regulating or supervising it, must demonstrate that the net benefits of exploration exceed net costs, including environmental costs. One particularly simple and cost-effective technique for increasing the net benefit/cost ratio of exploration is to reduce the net environmental costs by minimising and mitigating the impacts, both primary and secondary, of seismic acqisition. This is best achieved by a combination of preventive and restorative techniques: careful line positioning and low-impact (or zero) line clearance, coupled with simple rehabilitation of bladed lines. Line clearance without bulldozer blading - e.g. by rolling or simply pegging and trafficking, perhaps with tracked rather than rubber-tyred vibroseis - is one promising approach currently coming into use. Rehabilitation by grading soil banks ("windrows") back on to bladed tracks, though not yet in widespread use, has proved very successful in the limited areas where it has been applied to date.

This is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas about educating for a profession in mining and metallurgy, and I shall use it to highlight the ways in which educators, the industry, and the profession can help one another make that educa- tion better. This is home ground for me in more ways than one. As the executive head of a uni- versity perhaps I may speak as an educator; and there is still, I hope, enough of the metallurgist in me to allow me to speak of what we metal- lurgists and mining engineers can do to help the educators. Another interest should be declared, too. Among the educating agencies I shall focus on universities; among universities I shall further focus on my own, the University of New South Wales. I know it best; and, more to the point, we are one of the minority that offer a full profes- sional training in mining and metallurgy. Further, we are as a university very much concerned- more than most-with specifically professional education, and especially with education in the professions based on science and technology. Mining and metallurgy have of course played a central role, from earliest times onwards, in the history and development of science and tech- nology. In that role they have been both pro- ducers and consumers of new knowledge. Indeed the whole new attitude to knowledge that began to spread in 16th and 17th century Europe owed a great deal to the interests and traditions of the miner and the metallurgist. The first modern text- book of mining and metallurgy, George Agricola's De Re Metallica, is very much more than a spec- ialist handbook; it is a major landmark in intel- lectual and cultural history.

JOHN HAMRIC: Our next speakers are Richard Ghent, manager of environmental health and safety for CF Industries, Hardee Phosphate Complex, in Wauchula, Florida. Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

Cobriza can only be described as the Machu Picchu of the mining business. This relatively new mine of the Cerro de Pasco Corp. in Peru, subsidiary of The Cerro Corp., was put on stream in December 1967. The best way to get there is to go in the company's HelioCourier with pilot Paco Perez. The plane is mostly engine and the pilot is without nerves. The trip starts at an elevation of 12,000 ft at La Oroya and ends at the Cobriza air strip near the top of the Continental Divide at 14,200 ft. Perez says this is the highest air strip in the world. The flight is made at an altibude below many of the peaks and it is easy to pick out the Inca Trail which follows the ridge line of the top of the Andes. Inca ruins are also visible from the aircraft. The drainage pattern, with a surprising number of lakes and rivers, can be seen and so, too, can a great deal of structural geology and numerous agricultural settlements dotting the altiplano. Cobriza is in the monta[n]a on the east side of the Andes, which is characterized by tropical climate and vegetation, an abrupt change from the frosty mountain atmosphere. The mountainsides are precipitous and the bottoms of the steep valleys are channels for roaring rivers. Such is the setting of Cobriza, above the swift cataracts of the Mantaro, benched out precariously at about 8700 ft elevation. The mountains rise in majestic splendor and the sun comes up late and sets at 3: 30 on winter afternoons. One of the lowest of the Cerro de Pasco camps, it is the most remote.

A planar Gunn oscillator was developed for use in a monolithic microwave integrated circuit. The device was designed to operate in the frequency range of 20 to 30 GHz with a continuous wave output. Selective epitaxial deposition was used to form the n+n-n+ device structure in (111)-B semi-insuluting GaAs. The active n- region was about 5 µ thick and was doped to about 2 x 1015 electrons per cu cm by the reactor background. The mobility was -5000 sq cm v-1 sec-1. The n+ epitaxial deposits were doped to 1 x 10" electrons per cu cm using S2Cl2. Planarity of the three DURING the past few years, new microwave devices in discrete form have been developed utilizing GaAs. The next logical step is to combine these devices in a successive deposits was quite good; total overgrowth was less than 1 µ. Metal ohmic contacts were applied to the n+ or n- regions using a Ag-In-Ge alloy. The n+n-n+ devices had symmetric IV characteristics and could be operated C. W. for both directions of device bias. Metal ohmic contacts made directly to the n-region always Produced asymmetric devices. C. W. operation was obtained over the 22 to 28 GHz frequency range. The best performance obtained was 1.5 mw C. LV. output at 28 GHz. microwave integrated circuit. A potential application would be a radar receiver operating in the millimeter wavelength region. The key component in such an integrated circuit is a microwave oscillator, recently described by Gunn.1, 2 Under the influence of a large electric field, high-resistivity GaAs exhibits a bulk negative resistance, and high-frequency current oscillations result. My predecessor in the office of President of the Institute started a custom of visiting the various local sections, thus obtaining their points . of view and their ideas as to how the Institute can best serve the interests of its members. Exceedingly valuable- exchange of ideas was thus brought about. I am following this custom as far as the limited amount of free time at my disposal will allow me, and I trust that my successor in office will appreciate the benefit to be derived from following the custom thus initiated and will continue the swing around the circle of the local sections. The activities of the Institute are increased by the prestige gained from large numbers and I trust that every member of this local section will consider himself a member of the committee on increase of membership and will see if he is not able during the coming year to gain at least one new member for the Institute. This is a perfectly possible proposition for, although the membership of the Institute is at present approximately seven thousand, I feel sure there are at least seven thousand more men in the United States who are interested in mining, metallurgy or geology from the metal-mining point of view who would make admirable members or associate members of the Institute. The first consideration of the Institute as a body, and of each member as an individual, is to win the war and defeat the Huns. In order to accomplish this, the Institute, as a body, has cooperated with the other national engineering societies and the great bureaus of the Department of the Interior, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in forming committees to study and advise the Government on pressing problems of vital importance.

Introduction A problem that has faced mining engineers and mining geologists for many years is how to best explore a particular prospect so that the basic decision as to whether the material present is ore or only high-grade rock can be made with some confidence. It is obvious that one could not begin a large scale mining program on the basis of tests made on a few hand samples. On the other hand, one could not be 100 percent certain as to the average grade or tonnage before beginning development, as this would require the orebody to be mined out in the sampling process. The basic objectives of the exploration program can be stated as (1) to reduce mining risk; (2) to lessen the cost of development; and (3) to increase the profits of mining. The exploration program should be terminated when these objectives are no longer being met. The construction of tunnels is a specific mining operation. In the exploration program one should gather the data needed to determine (1) the type of excavation technique(s) to be used; and (2) the rate of advance that might be expected. As in the evaluation of an orebody, with the data collected it should be possible to estimate mining costs and project life. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is not possible to do this at least when dealing with medium to hard rock types. The reason for this, it is felt, is basically the inability to identify what specific rock mass properties are of use in tunnel design and to specify how these may be obtained in an exploration program. From the point of view of the metallographist, the adaptation of x-rays to the study of the crystal structure of metals is of the greatest importance. While one may hardly consider the findings resulting from x-ray study as revolutionary, their positive nature, compared with the deductions we have been forced to accept from the work that had gone before, gives firmer ground on which to build and furnishes new fields for speculation. Prior to the advent of the crystallogram, the best work on the crystal structure of steel was that of Osmond and Cartaud.' They concluded, from their investigation with percussion figures formed at various temperatures, that alpha, beta, and gamma irons belonged to the cubic system and that they showed well-marked specific characteristics and could not have the same internal structure. What the internal structures were, they had no direct method of determining; but from a consideration of the fact that the 001 plane (that parallel to the cube face) is a plane of perfect cleavage and minimum hardness in alpha iron and that the 111 (octahedral) plane is by far the most important in the crystallography of gamma iron, they were led to suggest the simple cubic arrangement as that of alpha and the face-centered cubic arrangement as that of gamma iron. They suggested the body-centered cubic arrangement as that of beta iron. The atomic arrangement of the various crystal forms of iron has been quite definitely determined in recent years by means of x-rays and the work of Westgren2 and Weatgren and Phragmen3 has been rather conclusive. They not only determined the atomic arrangement of alpha, beta, and gamma iron but also that of the high-temperature modification delta.

During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. This paper gives the results of an investigation of the specific resistance and temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance of nickel and its important alloy, monel metal. For most of the pure metals, the temperature coefficient of resistance is approximately 0.004 per degree centigrade at 20" C. Nickel and iron, however, are exceptions. This property is important as it gives us good material for the construction of thermometers and other instruments involving electrical control. A summary of information on this subject has been publishcd by the Bureau of Standards.l The present experiments antedate this publication by several years and as the information obtained is not contained in it, the results of the experiments arc published as additional information. Electrical Properties of Pure Nickel It is generally conceded that the lowest values for electrical resistance are obtained in the purest metal. In the case of nickel, the best material obtainable is electrolytic nickel, which contains approximately 99.80 per cent. nickel, 0.15 per cent. iron, and 0.05 per cent. copper. Any cobalt that may be present is included in the nickel figure. If the elcctrolStic sheet has been deposited without intermission, it is possible to cut a section from the sheet and roll it into wire without melting. By this means a nickel wire may be obtained that is uncontaminated by any of the impurities always taken up by nickel during melting.
