Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. TheZapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level.   However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy. In the developed countries, government policies for the development of mineral resources have been progressively eroded since the early 1970s. At the same time policies for the environment and for native land rights have generally been carried out in a way that has reduced access to minerals and increased the cost and risks for prospectors and developers (Hancock, 1995). Since the end of the Cold War, the lesser developed countries (LDCs) have introduced policies to attract investment in their mineral resources that remained undeveloped under previous unstable or hostile regimes. The increased attraction of these LDCs and the decreased attraction of the developed countries has caused many Australian and North American companies to outlay increasing proportions of their budgets and capital investment in the LDCs.   Significantly, LDC policies for environment protection do not discourage exploration and mine development, Surveys of the relative appeal of the LDCs and the traditional mining countries of the developed world, rate Chile, Argentina and Indonesia ahead of Australia and Canada in terms of risk, delays and ease of doing business (Australian Mining Monthly, February 1994).

Gold mining has been undertaken in South Africa for more than a century. A great proportion of that mining has been from the Witwatersrand Basin; a geological phenomenon that has few parallels throughout the world. It has produced some 47 000 tonnes of gold mainly from underground mines, many of which have been truly world class gold mines. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand Basin have dominated world gold production from their inception and their production has been one of the cornerstones of the development of South Africa as a whole. The mines have some very specific characteristics; their sheer size, the depth of extraction, the nature of the orebodies, and their labour-intensive methods. The mines have also been part of the Mining House concept-a concept unique to South Africa. South African production has declined from a maximum of 1000 tonnes in 1970 to 470 tonnes in 1997. This, as a percentage of western world production, has declined from a maximum of 79 per cent (in 1970) to 21 per cent of world production (in 1997). The nineties' have seen South Africa and its mining companies move onto the world stage and face the harsh realities of having to compete in all spheres of business with their aggressive counterparts principally in Australia, Canada and the USA. The fight is for investment funds with the owners looking for the best returns on their money. In his address Roger Dixon will examine the current situation in the gold mining industry and examine the competitiveness of the mines of the Witwatersrand Basin compared with their peers worldwide. He will also discuss some of the fundamental challenges facing South African gold mines in the areas of legislation, technology, industrial relations, and health and safety. The environment in which the mines operate has changed radically in recent years and their ability to respond to these challenges will determine their future existence.

"Tills work is related with the production of tiles using wastes from mining and metallurgical industry of Hidalgo State, as raw material. These wastes present a majority particle size (60 %), minor than 53 m (mesh 270, in Tyler Series) with the following composition; 70.01 % wt. of Si02, 12.82 % wt. of Ah03, 3.80 % wt. of Fe, 0.70 % wt. of Mn, 3.98 % wt. ofK20, 3.34 % wt. of CaO, 2.50 % wt. ofNa20, 0.04 % wt. of Zn, 0.026 % wt. of Pb, 56 grams per ton of Ag and 0.6 grams per ton of Au. In this work, the partial results and experimental conditions for the preparation of some composites to produce tiles are shown. The composite that offers the best results in productions of tiles was that with 66.67 % wt. of mining waste, 26.67 % wt. of red mud and 6.67 % wt. of black mud.IntroductionTo now, mining activities carried out during more than 457 years in Hidalgo State, Mexico; has lead a great volume of wastes; which can be classified into different types, having among the more common; Acid mining water, solid transport water, elements in radical form, abandoned minerals without processing and processing minerals wastes known as burrows, being these the most abundant in the region counting with an approximated volume of 110 million of tons, presenting a fine particle size that can affect population health during windy epochs [1 -4].Form metallurgical point of view, is well known that a fundamental characterization study it is necessary to know the viability of reusing or recycling of these wastes. According this, these residues can also be considered as raw materials in other economical activities, due its Si, Fe, AI, Ca, Na and P oxides contents, its mineralogy and the distribution of chemical elements in the primary and secondary phases [1,2,5,6]."

THERE are many who may consider a paper on aerial transport and its possibilities in connection with mining operations somewhat premature. Nevertheless, as there is considerable interest manifested in the subject at the present time and the amount of information available is both scanty and misleading, the result of investigations in some of the remote mining districts of Peru will not only be of interest, but will help crystallize, in the minds of many, a more correct conception of just what an airplane is capable of doing. By way of introduction, I will deal briefly with the types and varieties of airplanes now in use, and the developments of the past few years, pointing out -how the war has encouraged machines. of startling performance rather than those of commercial utility. I will then take up aerial transport in general, showing how airplanes may be employed to advantage and the particular kind of work for which they are best suited. This will cover a preliminary discussion on cost, which is one of the most important phases of the subject. In passing on from a general survey of the situation, I will deal with actual observations and investigations made in Peru. This part of the paper will be divided into two sections: the first, covering the mountainous districts of the Andes (Tamboras, Pataz, Soledad, etc.); the second, the alluvial deposits in the rivers, Chinchipe, Santiago, and Napo. In each case the question of atmospheric conditions, altitude, landing grounds, motors, cost, etc. will be discussed. While it is my intention to deal chiefly with mining in the sections mentioned, the same line of argument will be applicable to any other districts in the world. In conclusion, I will touch on the possibilities of using lighter-than-air craft of the Zeppelin type, followed by a summary of the most salient points brought out in the paper.

Successful leaching of gold depends on appropriate chemical conditions; contact between leach solution and the gold particles; separation of the leach solution from the solids and extraction of the valuable ion from the solution. Irrespective of the leaching method employed the chemical conditions required are similar as is the dependence of solu­tion/gold contact on liberation. The various leaching methods available vary in the means by which gold/solution contact and solid/liquid separation are achieved. The essential difference between heap or vat leaching techniques and those involving agitation of a slurry is dependence on percolation for effective gold/solution contact. The most significant factor preventing uniform percolation is the presence of fines or clays. The quantity and character of the fines fraction is ore type dependent and may result from crushing, degradation during stacking or leaching, or the natural size distribution of the ore. The problems associated with fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the heap. Segregation during stacking can result in concentration of fine particles at the centre of heaps. Further concentration of fines may also occur during irrigation by the movement of the fine particles with the solution. The end result is that the areas in which fines are concentrated become areas of low permeability. The contact between leach solution and the ore in such areas is, at best, slowed down dramatically and, in some cases, prevented altogether. The consequences of this phenomena are slow leaching and a reduction in recovery. The conventional solution to this problem is well known. Agglomeration of ore prior to heap leaching is practised widely. The effect of agglomeration is to immobilise the fines by causing them to adhere either to each other or to larger ore particles. The net effect is that the ore behaves as if no fines were present. The use of agglomeration is limited only by its cost, the most significant components of which are the cost of binding agent, commonly cement, and the capital cost of the agglomerating equipment.

There are certain concepts that seem to invite responses from some, including some in the foundation industry and even some within DFI, that are at best surprising. Business owners and their employees share the desire that their company does well and continues to operate. Maybe company growth is not always realistic but maintaining the current level of activity is in the least what they hope for. In other words, they hope that their company is sustainable, and they are fully behind that notion. But when the concept of sustainability is raised, there is, at least with some, suddenly doubt that that is a good thing. And yet, that concept only aims to achieve at a grander scale what the owners and employees desire for their company. There are many definitions of the term sustainability, but probably the most commonly used description is that framed by the United Nations in 1987. It states that sustainability is the concept of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Arguably that definition is too abstract and does not provide the type of specific goals and targets we are used to. To help with that, to some extent, in 2015 the United Nations formulated 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to provide "a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future." And undoubtedly those SDGs are fodder for those that question the concept of sustainability in the foundation industry. How can our industry, they wonder, ensure that there is no poverty or hunger (SDG 1 and 2), and the climate action goal (SDG 13) immediately leads to the hot button topic of global warming. And maybe this is where advocates lose (some of) the sceptics of the sustainability concept, but hopefully they will continue to read this article that lays out why sustainability simply makes sense, also for the foundation industry and especially for DFI.

In the construction of internal-combustion engines, the cooling of the combustion chamber and pistons is of great importance. In certain types of engines, the adequate dissipation of heat from the bearings is also important. One of the important factors affecting heat dissipation from these parts is the thermal conductivity of the material used. A search of the technical literature shows that, in general, the thermal conductivity of the elements1 has been determined accurately by a number of investigators. The data on the industrial alloys are, however, meager. For an investigation of these alloys, the thermal-conductivity apparatus described in this paper has been constructed at the laboratory of the General Motors Research Corporation. It is desirable that an apparatus for work of this nature should give fair accuracy of results with a convenient form of specimen and a reasonable rapidity of operation. A summary of the different methods of determining thermal conductivity is given in the first volume of the " Dictionary of Applied Physics," pages 429 and 470. The method selected as best satisfying these conditions is that of Griffith, on page 443, with the addition of a guard ring similar in principle to the method used by Berget (P. 445). Briefly, the method consists of heating one end of a bar T, Fig. 1, electrically, measuring the amount of heat transmitted through the bar by a flow calorimeter J fastened to the other end, and measuring the temperature gradient along the bar. A series of studies of the corrosion of tin is under way in the Metals Research Laboratory at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The complete program includes examination of the corrosion properties of high-purity tin and the changes produced in these properties by the addition of varying amounts of alloying elements. Other studies of this subject have been made recently under the sponsorship of the International Tin Research and Development Council, but these researches have been confined largely to the weakly acid environments commonly encountered in the canning industry.' There is little information available regarding the corrosion of tin under alkaline conditions, but such data would be of value, for a large amount of the metal is used under such conditions. The potential measurements to be described were made because they seemed to offer the most rapid method for obtaining a general view of the conditions to be encountered in such service. These experiments will also serve to establish a technique that will be of value in further studies. It must be emphasized that the results reported are those of controlled laboratory experiments and that the conclusions drawn cannot yet be applied to service conditions; rather, they point to the directions in which more exhaustive experimental work may be done to best advantage. Experimental Procedure The first work was devoted entirely to the problem of obtaining reproducible results from a series of potential measurements. Only the methods finally adopted as standard will be described here, except when the variations from these have furnished results of interest. The cell used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years past have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. The case is presented for the development of a spray-on liner for ground support, but only in the context of a new mining system, consistent with the technical and business case advantages of liners compared to alternatives. Over the past 10 years much effort has been expended in specifying and testing the mechanical/environmental properties of various liners, without actually fulfilling any mining system requirements. The results have been generally disappointing, with no consistent and sustained application in a dayto- day production environment being achieved, anywhere. Central to this shortcoming has been the failure of mining/liner ma nufacturing companies to realise that screen/mesh or shotcrete cannot simply be replaced with thin, deformable liners: success will depend upon closely defining and evolving a new, liner- functional mining system. The paper begins with a discussion of some fundamental technical capabilities and constraints associated with 3M Canada?s liner material that has been developed in partnership with Falconbridge Limited. Intended applications for this liner include the support of bursting ground associated with deep mining conditions. With safe application and consistent performance in mind, the paper argues for a new mining system that derives in the first place from best quality drilling and blasting practices. Taking this as a given, a system for waterscaling and liner application prior to mucking out is proposed, followed by bolting through the liner while arranging for the bolts to be explicitly connected to the liner. Some logistical and equipment related challenges of such a mining system are then reviewed and discussed in the context of the business case for liners. It is concluded that this approach, if successful, will provide the greatest benefits in the areas of safer mining, due to reduction in worker exposure, and in reduced mining cycle times.

THE milling of talc, as is the case of many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, have a good slip, be free from grit and iron, uniform, and fine grained; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color tales might be utilized, as in Germany and-Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored tales.

It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. Water vapour refrigeration (systems using water as the refrigerant) could potentially be used to provide chilled water at underground locations in mines, as an alternative to conventional refrigerators using refrigerants such as R-134a. The use of water as both the primary and secondary refrigerants is attractive in concept since direct-contact heat exchangers could be used, yielding higher coefficients of performance. The disadvantage of water is the very high specific volume of the vapour at low pressures, which leads to great challenges in compressor design, as has been reported previously in the context of slurry-ice plants for mine applications (Ophir and Koren, 1999). Steam ejectors have long been known as alternative compression devices for refrigerators, but no work has been done previously on the possibility of using ejectors powered by high-pressure water, which is readily available in mines from long pipe columns in vertical shafts. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation into the use of high-pressure water as the motive fluid in an ejector refrigerator. No previously reported liquid ejector system has achieved subcooling of the process fluid, ie a reduction in fluid temperature within the evaporator to a level below that of the motive fluid. In contrast, the present work demonstrated that subcooling could occur at motive water pressures above 5 MPa. Mine cooling applications were considered and it was concluded that while this concept would not be feasible as a mine-wide cooling source, there could be specialised applications where it would be beneficial. One application would be to cool backfill and thereby reduce the heat load at the working face. In this case the best performance would be achieved by using the ejector in combination with an energy recovery system such as a Pelton turbine or a three-chamber pipe feeder.

This paper was prepared as a supplement to the general review by Dr. N. G. W. Cook. His analysis of the problem in terms of the strain energy involved in making the excavation is excellent. It will contribute much towards a clearer understanding of rock behavior and control. Several of the practical applications described herein can be directly related to Dr. Cook's theories and conclusions, and are based on the very same principles. CONTROLLED BLASTING IN ROCK EXCAVATION Generally speaking, the natural rock is a relatively strong and competent structural material, if we conserve its inherent good properties and perhaps reinforce its weak spots. The difficulty often lies in blasting out the tunnel or chamber without damaging the walls and roof we wish to have remain afterwards. Much progress has been made in the last five years in better understanding the controlled excavation of rock. The specialized techniques known as smooth wall blasting and presplit blasting have now developed from the status of curiosities of rock excavation to the point where these techniques are specified in contracts drawn up for such rock excavation projects as tunnels, underground pourer houses, etc. These techniques have been well described and discussed in previous publications; there is no need to reiterate here. It might be well to point out that recent research has demonstrated the effect that inherent rock stress may have on presplitting in certain directions. Material can be presplit most readily parallel to the direction of maximum compressive stress, and this may not always be in the direction desired. Inherent rock stress measurements by stress relief over coring, etc., may have important value in deciding how to best presplit proposed excavations. The purpose of this report is to supply the Coal Classification Committee' with information for use in the formulation of a system of classification of coals according to their uses. Consideration is given here only to the nonferrous metallurgical operations that consume relatively large amounts of coal or coke; i. e., the smelting of copper, lead, zinc and aluminum. For all of these uses, coal of certain definite qualities is desired. Geographical location, however, often determines whether these qualities can be specified. In some instances the preferred qualities must be specified, regardless of cost. In others, quality may be sacrificed for lower cost, although the best quality consistent with cost is usually the determining factor. These considerations will be outlined in the following discussion under the various uses, which, however, will illustrate the impracticability of preparing definite specifications for coal used in the majority of the nonferrous industries. Coal and Coke in Copper Metallurgy From the standpoint of coal consumption, copper smelting and refining operations are the most important of the nonferrous metallurgical uses of coal. As nickel ores treated in the United States and Canada are associated with copper, the first step in their recovery is really a copper-smelting operation; accordingly, the following considerations under copper smelting apply equally to nickel. Copper Smelting in Reverberatory Furnaces.—For a long time, rever-beratory copper-smelting furnaces were fired with lump coal burned on grates in a fire box. Later, lump coal was displaced by pulverized coal or oil burned directly in the smelting chamber. Recently, natural gas has been used in several plants, although producer gas was used for this purpose at Great Falls as early as 1903.2 Requirements for coal used in

ANDES, lying south of Chuquicamata and north of Braden on the western slope of Chile's cordillera, can best be described as a big well-managed copper-mining enterprise without any peculiarly outstanding features. In point of copper produced, since output started in 1927, it ranks fifth among the Porphyries, being exceeded only by its two Chilean contemporaries and by Utah Copper and Morenci in the United States. Even so, there is little to distinguish it from other properties. It does not have the phenomenally rich ore (better than 2 per cent copper) that characterizes Braden; and it is not in the same class as Chuquicamata whose ore has the excellent tenor of around 1.7 per cent, nor has it Chuqui's immense tonnage of proven ore reserves and potential ore resources. One might say the operations are standard in that there are no basic or radical departures from established practice. A letter from New York supplying me with sundry pertinent facts for which I had asked, makes this comment regarding the answer to one inquiry: "omitted because it is the ordinary equipment found in any well-run mine." The substance of that remark applies generally to the other operations, plants, and facilities. One interesting fact that helps explain this situation should not be overlooked. Until the "new" Morenci in 1942, Andes was the last of the Porphyry copper mines to come into production. It did not do much pioneering because other companies had, of necessity, charted the way in many particulars. The face of project evaluation is changing continuously, making it ever more critical to get a clear understanding upfront of the objectives, decision-making processes and criteria of the project proponents. Requirements are usually significantly different for emerging æjuniorsÆ compared with long established major mining houses and companies in developing countries compared with western companies. Requirements are also different for different types of evaluations, such as due diligence studies compared with feasibility studies of æownedÆ projects and there are often key misunderstandings around the use of the term æbankableÆ. Further, it has become increasingly important with increasingly remote and lower quality resources to understand risk relativities such as infrastructure compared with the core processing facilities. This has also driven the need for more trade-off studies to determine the best balance between critical issues, such as optimisation of the interface between mine and processing plant, capital versus operating cost and automation versus labour. In every project evaluation, it is also critical to consider emerging trends and changing requirements and standards such as sustainability and community interface. Finally, the inescapable drive to reduce time to market has driven changes such as increased use of more standardised designs and innovative approaches to the transition from project development to execution. This paper begins with a brief review of the different objectives and risks of each project development stage to establish a framework for subsequent discussion of the different requirements of different types of companies in different locations, different types of evaluations and different types of projects and project components. This is followed by a review of changing requirements and standards and some innovative developments in sustainability and community interface are presented. Finally, the paper outlines a number of developments in the area of operational readiness planning that focus on minimising the time to achieve maximum return on investment.

There are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. Inductance is calculated from the dimensions of the furnace, according to formulas of the U. S. Bureau of Standardsll as follows. Formula 99, for mutual inductance, is: M = 2l [log 2l/d-1 +d/l] Formula 103, for self-inductance, is: Both of these formulas are approximations which are nearly correct when 1 is great compared to d or R. 1 = length of circuit, in centimeters, d = separation between the conductors, in centimeters, R = geometric mean radius of conductors. For a circular tube, R = the radius of the circle. For a solid circular conductor, R = 0.7788 X the radius of the conductor. For a rectangular conductor, R = 0.2235 X (a + b), a being the length, and b being the width of the rectangle. After the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public aesayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a suffciently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present, small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. In universities in which assaying is taught the record of the samples should fulfill the following requirements:
