Water spray applications are one of the principal means of controlling airborne respirable dust in coal mines. Since many coals are hydrophobic and not easily wetted by water, wetting agents can be added to the spray water in an effort to improve coal wetting and assist with dust capture. In order to study wetting agent effects on coal dust capture, laboratory experiments were conducted with three wetting agents used by the coal industry on -325 mesh sized Pocahontas No. 3 coal dust. Significant differences in coal dust sinktimes were observed among the three wetting agents at water mixture concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%. The best wetting agent as identified by the coal dust sink test was only tested at the lowest 0.05% water mixture concentration and was found to have a negligible effect on spray airborne dust capture. Water spray airborne dust capture results for all three wetting agents tested at a 0.2% water mixture concentration showed that all three wetting agents exhibit similar but small improvements in dust capture efficiency as compared with water. These results indicate that the coal dust sink test may not be a good predictor for the capture of airborne dust. Additional research is needed to examine if the coal dust sink test is a better predictor of wetting agent dust suppression effects during cutting, loading, conveying, and dumping of coal products by comparison to airborne dust capture from sprays.

"1. IntroductionThe Falconbridge Owl Creek open pit gold mine is located 17 km northeast of Timmins and 2.5 km west of the Kidd Creek metallurgical site. Diamond drilling first commenced in 1964 with open pit production commencing in 1982. Other operations within close proximity are the Canamax-Pamour Bell Creek Mine and the Falconbridge Hoyle Pond Mine.Since 1982, 1,216,000 tonnes assaying 4.5 g/t have been processed in six concentrators. This paper summarizes the metallurgy achieved with special emphasis on some of the unique problems encountered in the processing of this refractory ore.2. GeologyThe Owl Creek deposit, located 3 km north of the Porcupine-Destor fault is in easterly trending carbonaceously altered volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The deposit strikes east and dips steeply north.The ore body can be best described as a wedge shaped sandwich of volcanic basalt between the surrounding sedimentary greywacke. The north and south volcanic-sedimentary interfaces are marked by graphitic zones. The south graphitic contact is more continuous with its thickness varying from 5 m to 20 m as compared to 0.5 m to 3 m to the north. Quartz veins occur throughout the deposit with a predominant vein running along the south contact where it is characterized by numerous graphitic inclusions. Some veins carrying gold values intrude into the sediments in the north. With depth the sedimentary and volcanic zones taper while the quartz-graphitic zones appear to become more dominant."

At one time explosives were the only economical means of rock tunnel excavation. Except in relatively long tunnels in the right rock explosives are still the cheapest means of rock excavation where they can be used. Today the most economical means of rock tunnel excavation is increasingly not the choice of the contractor. A good part of our work is for public agencies in urban areas and the public today is increasingly less tolerant of the disruption caused by our efforts. Owners in many cases have to direct their engineers to write specifications which severely restrict noise and vibration levels during construction. Sometimes specifications allow drill-and-shoot for starter tunnels only or even eliminate powder by fiat. Recent advances in the use of explosives such as sequential firing have made blasting more palatable to the public but are not enough in all situations. Thus the roadheaders on construction projects. In recent work I have seen the Alpine Miners, a Paurant Miner and the Robbins Mobile Miners used in several rock formations and now believe this type of equipment has a place in the tunnel constructor's choice of equipment. Rudy and I have not attempted to present a formula for choosing the best alternative excavation method in any given case because, of course, of the variables involved. We have simply tried to describe our experiences on a particular project and hope our observations will be of some value to tunnel constructors.

If one can embrace the medical analogue, much of the mining industry currently suffers from a massive bacterial infection. When pyrite-bearing or sulfide-bearing rock formations, tailings, or mine wastes are infected by Acidithiobacillus ferro-oxidans, the likelihood of forming acid rock drainage (ARD) is almost guaranteed. The ?pharmacy? of antibiotics available is extensive, ranging from solid alkaline amendments like limestone to liquid ?medicines? such as sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium thiocyanate, waste milk, and bipolar lipids. Unfortunately, the ?geo-medical? teams of geochemists, microbiologists, engineers, and mine managers lack the tools to surgically apply these active ingredients where they are needed most with a minimum of waste. Distribution of fine grained limestone on the surface of an acidic mine waste dump is analogous to applying a bandage soaked in antacid to treat an upset stomach. The implementation of up-to-date best management practices has not healed the patient; an equivalent combination of hypodermic needle, cyber knife, and arthroscopic probe is clearly needed. Using an engineered, flow-able or pumpable foam or pHoam? as the medicinally analogous ?dextrose delivery solution? for solid and/or liquid ?geo-antibiotics?, the authors have combined off-the-shelf technologies that have been previously applied in solving geotechnical problems in the mining industry. A patent for the innovative process is pending. This paper discusses method concepts and the advantages it could provide over conventional BMPs.

The benefits of using a centrifugal field to concentrate both coarse and fine gold are well documented but the placement of these machines within grinding circuits is still evolving. Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. "INTRODUCTION Inertial classification, gravitational sedimentation centrifugation, and thermal precipitation arc techniques that can be used to collect particles for subsequent analysis or for particle classification. The inertial classifiers, which include impactors, virtual impactors, and cyclones, are widely used in the sampling or particles. Settling chambers, which include centrifuges as well as gravitational settling devices, are less widely used. Thermal precipitators arc seldom used.Impactors, in particular, have been used extensively, studied both theoretically and experimentally, and arc the instrument or choice for the determination or aerosol mass size distributions. Many versions or impactors arc available commercially and many more have been designed, built, and used in special studies.Virtual impactors are a more recently developed inertial classifier and possess a feature not round in conventional inertial impactors; namely, that the particles remain airborne after classification compared to the conventional impactor, where the particles arc collected on a solid surface. The feature or keeping particles airborne is important for transporting the particles to other particle-analyzing instruments, or to filters, and in concentrating particles larger than the cutsize in a small fraction of the total now."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential availability of chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos from 42 properties in market economy countries. This resulted in the development of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of grades 3 through 7 asbestos at various average total costs of production at 0% and 15% rates of return on invested capital. The availability of grades 2 and 8 was also evaluated, but since each is produced at only one property, no analytical results were given. Total demonstrated recoverable chrysotile fiber potentially available of grades 3 through 7 from the 42 properties evaluated follow: 1.59 million t, 21.00 million t, 16.74 million t, 15.54 million t, and 19.27 million t, respectively. The total amount of crocidolite is 1.69 million t. Owing to the good potential for discovery and development of new deposits, long- term availability of fiber of all three types is not in jeopardy. However, many of the crocidolite properties evaluated in the northern Cape crocidolite field of South Africa have relatively small demonstrated resources, and new deposits will have to be exploited by the late 1990's to sustain projected levels of production.

The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent or at least delay mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the forms of calcined bones at least 2 000 years ago, (1) and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilizers in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 million metric tons of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows. Marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits, requiring an apatite carbonate mineral separation.

A novel technique has been employed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the zeta potential of particles for a far-reaching series of material types in a wide variety of baseline waters, both alone and with many different chemical additives. The materials tested ranged from naturally occurring Sioux Quartzite and Tennessee marble to commercially produced magnesium oxide bricks. The waters tested ranged from ultrapure distilled, deionized water to municipal tap water and mine-site water. The chemical solutions tested included inorganic additives, such as aluminum chloride (AICI3) and sodium chloride (NaCl); organic additives, such as dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB); and nonionic polymers, such as polyethylene oxide (PEO). The results of precise zeta potential determinations have application in a large number of laboratory studies as well as in various mining and processing operations.

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). 1. It has been proposed that the addition of enough limestone to an open -hearth s lag to give a CaO-3P2O5 ratio of approximately 2-followed by SiO2 firing in an oxidizing atmosphere under the proper conditions of time and temperature will result in a clinker having a magnetic phase containing a preponderance of Mn, Fe, Al, and Mg as oxides and a nonmagnetic phase consisting for the most part of a phosphorus-containing dicalcium silicate. It has been postulated further that the metal oxide phase can be recovered by fine grinding and magnetic separation. These broad principles have been substantiated by numerous clinkering operations made in an electrically fired studio-type kiln, a batch rotary kiln, and a continuous rotary kiln and by magnetic separations made in a Davis -tube separator and a laboratory-size Jeffrey-Steffensen three -roll continuous separator. 2. Quenching the clinker after firing seems to improve its grindability. Microscopic examination of the ground clinker indicates .that the oxide phase grinds down at a somewhat faster rate than the silicate phase. 3. Very fine grinding is necessary to approach liberation, of the oxide phase from the silicate phase. Grinding to ininus-325-mesh, followed by magnetic separation, gave only a rougher concentrate, which had to be reground before final separation. 4. Although the manganese content of the final concentrate was higher, there was some evidence that manganese recovery was lower from a clinker made from a flush s lag than one made from a mixture of tap and flush slags. A possible explanation is that a clinker made from a mixture of slags has a higher iron content and hence is more magnetic and more easily separated.

RESINS from a bituminous pitch, a bituminous coal, a lignite tar, a subbituminous pitch, and an electrode binder pitch wore investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The compositions of these resins were determined by four independent methods of structural detemination: (1) Molecular formula and ring analysis, including ring (2) infrared and ultraviolet spectra; (3) combined pyrolysis/gas chromatography, and (4) catalytic dehyrogenation followed by spectra and pyrolysis. The resin structure was correlated with coal structure, and it was concluded that pitch resins probably consist of essentially unaltered coal molecules carried over with the tar vapors in low-temperature carbonization.

The report described improvements and applications of the Hybrid Computer facility. Improvements implemented under U.S.B.M. Contract H0252035 included expansion of the capability to model nonlinear seam behavior, installation of a color video output display monitor, and further development of software capabilities. To demonstrate the capability of the system, firstly, the influence of nonlinear seam behavior response to the occurrence of coal mine bumps was fully investigated and secondly, the effect of improper mining sequence on bump occurrence was demonstrated. In addition, the system was applied to the analysis of a series of practical coal mine problems. Mines in three coal seams were analysed to investigate the parameters which contribute to the occurrence of coal mine bumps.

Cyanide is a toxic species that is found predominantly in industrial effluents generated by metallurgical operations. Cyanide's strong affinity for metals makes it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment and as a lixivant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but require safeguards to prevent accidental spills. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and oxidation, including photolytic advanced-oxidation processes, are therefore reviewed. Reaction mechanisms are presented throughout the paper. The methods are compared in regards to their effectiveness in treating various cyanide species: free cyanide, thiocyanate, weak-acid dissociables, and strong-acid dissociables.

Petroleum technologists and progressive operators constantly are striving to increase the percentage of oil that may to recovered from reservoir rocks through wells. The exhaustive studies that have been made of the function of natural as in the production of oil, for example, have aided operators greatly in increasing the quantity of oil recovered from reservoirs. Natural gas dissolved in and otherwise associated under pressure with oil in reservoir rocks, however, is not the only source of energy available for moving oil through sands to wells. In becoming "reservoir—energy conscious" engineers have learned that in many petroleum reservoirs the edgewater flanking the oil accumulation constitutes a potential source of energy capable, through proper control, of increasing oil—recovery efficiencies materially. No longer is the encroachment of water into the oil— and gas—filled tart of the reservoir considered as an evil to be combatted by devious methods but rather a natural consequence, incident to the withdrawal of nil and as from the wells, that may be used advantageously in lengthening the flowing life of wells and increasing the economic recovery of oil and gas.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

FROM AN OLD MANUSCRIPT THE text for this contribution to the history of the Patio process is a page taken from a Spanish manuscript of Bartholomé Arzaj Sanches y Uela, now in the possession of the library of Brown University (see Figure 1). I owe the photographic print to the courtesy of the librarian. The date, as will be seen, is 1577. The subject is the treatment of silver ores at Potosi, in old Peru, but in modern Bolivia. The group of drawings (see Figure 1) is entitled "Arrangement of the machines in which the ores of silver are ground on the bank of Potosi, the one of two batteries and the other of one". First, top-left, we have the sketch of a "machine of one battery" operated by a water-wheel. From this mill the water runs in part along an aqueduct supported by pillars to the two-battery mill and in part down the hillside, where men are at work with "tubs, which are called cochas, in which are washed the charges of ore and amalgam". Along the top of the page are shown the "various offices in which are stored the copper, the salt, the ucha [llama dung, used for fuel], the lime, and other materials for the re-duction of the ores". To the right of these are "apartments and warehouses in which is stored the ore brought down from the mountain"?the cerro de Potosi. Through the arched portal come the "sheep [llamas] on which is brought down the ore". To this is added a reference to "the second gate, which closes the whole works". On the level above the aqueduct are seen six men carrying skin-bags that contain water. This is being sprinkled on the ore. On the extreme right are six more of these water-carriers. Next comes the two-battery mill. The mortero, or mortar, is marked on the right. Another description says, "Stone, on which the stamps crush the ore, which is called a mortar". To the left of these are indicated "screens of wire in which the ore is sifted after it has been crushed". Farther to the left, near the ore-washers, is a "shed, in which is placed the metallurgist to test the ore of the boxes". Along the left side of the page are sundry buildings, one of which is labelled a "shed in which are placed the cones of silver". Near it, lower, to the right, is the "furnace, in which are roasted the sulphides to facilitate treatment". Farther to the right is the "place where the Indians mix the charges of sulphide ore, which is called a buitron". Alongside is a "buitron in which the charges are prepared for reduction". Inside is a container, to which are attached the words "measure, called topo" On the extreme right is "another buitron in which the Indians mix the ores with their feet, as well as the heaps for the preparation of the reduction". Near the bottom, on the extreme left, is the "chapel where the holy sacri¬fice of the mass is celebrated". Under the first buitron is the "place where they dry the moist ores, called pãpear".

Methods are proposed for predicting concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the combustion gases of flames, specifically of lean, stoichiometric, and rich propane-air flames. Calculations are based on kinetic and thermodynamic theory. These theoretical data are compared with concentrations observed experimentally downstream of flat grid-type burner flames (approximately 25,000 Btu/hr) that were used to simulate gas appliances such as water and space heaters. Air pollutant concentrations are also computed for (1) flames chemically perturbed by recycling flue gases into the primary fuel-air mixtures; (2) flames thermally perturbed by cooling the burned gases at different rates; and (3) flames perturbed by combination of these two effects. In general, experimental and computed concentrations agree to within a factor of 2 to 7 with the experimental values always being higher than the theoretical. The theoretical analysis indicates that cooling the primary flame by recycling cold flue gases (with and without excess air) reduces the relative emission of nitric oxide and increases emission of carbon monoxide if the flame stoichiometry does not radically change. Cooling rates of about 5,500° to 10,000° R/sec starting at about 3,500° R generally suffice to prevent nitric oxide concentrations in lean flames from increasing much above the initial values at the combustion zone; these same cooling rates do not prevent oxidation of most of the initial carbon monoxide.
