THE origin of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain has been investigated by many of the most able geologists, but the problem cannot be said to have been satisfactorily solved. Since 1860, numerous theories have been presented, only to be discarded, at least in part, as more complete information revealed their fundamental weakness. Real progress toward solution dates from 1902, when Hill' advanced the theory of secondary deposition of the domal materials from saturated solutions of hot saline waters ascending from great depths under hydrostatic head along structural lines of weakness. Shortly thereafter, Harris,2 using Hill's hypothesis as a basis, explained the doming and pronounced uplift associated with these salt cores as the result of forces exerted by growing salt crystals. This was a marked advance over the ideas of Coste3 and Hager,4 since no. evidence of igneous intrusives, as they assumed to explain the uplifts, had been found associated with the domes. Harris5 developed his theory until it offered such apparently plausible explanations of so many details of dome phenomena that his hypothesis and conclusions received widespread acceptance, despite some serious objections, and today his theory, somewhat modified, is considered by many able investigators to be the best explanation of, the origin of these domes. The laboratory investigations which are necessary to evaluate the mineral processing effectiveness usually include density separation of narrow size fraction of the feed and one of the products. In each size - density fractions the content of valuable mineral has to be determined. These data and yield in each size - density fraction can be specified by a matrix of partition coefficients. They are counterparts of recoveries. These coefficients can be compared with the mean recoveries at each density or size fraction or the total recovery, to determine which density - size fractions are processed in the best or worst way. The basic categories are: vector of metal content l _i 1711, 7t2, òòò, ltM I ò vector of particle size distribution x = I d1, d2, ..., dN I ò matrix of partition coefficients P11, P12, Pi N P _ P21, P22, ..., P2 N PM1 PM2..., PMN These three conceptions allow one to determine all the basic metallurgical parameters of a mineral processing unit. Losses of valuable mineral are connected with: ò mineralogical composition of the ore (types of minerals, their properties, dissemination, crystallochemical affinity, type and properties of gangue minerals), ò applied technology and technical equipment (beneficiation as a stochastic process, processing methods, process control, intergrowth liberation, water quality). Examples of application of the analytical method proposed are given for zinc - lead and coal processing plants.

Computer software systems have been developed to assist in a wide range of specific mine planning and scheduling applications. In selecting appropriate systems for any mining operation it is apparent that certain features have particular advantages for each mine site. The ideal solution to this problem is to select a range of systems which best relate to sections of each mining operation. This approach raises potential data linking difficulties where output from one system is incompatible with input requirements for other systems. A study at the University of Queensland investigated the problems related to the integration of a number of mine planning and scheduling software systems. The project used data from large scale coal strip mining operations in Central Queensland. Two major computer packages used extensively in the study were the SURPAC mine planning and XPAC mine scheduling systems. Dragline and truck and shovel operations were analysed in the project. Results of the work have been directly applied at the mine site to assist current strip design by effectively automating the design procedure. This enabled sensitivity studies to determine the effects of changing dragline working levels and varying pit dimensions. Coal blending studies and procedures to optimise operations have been investigated using linear programming within a spreadsheet software application. Output from the SURPAC and XPAC programs was directly linked to the linear program for this analysis. The simulation program GPSS/PC was also used in a similar manner to assess optimisation parameters.

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. Ore reserve categories used by Pancontinental Mining fall into one of three fundamental groupings: Geological In Situ Reserves Mining Reserves Production Estimates The first of these describes the total reserve within stated parameters without implication as to its mineability. The second is that part of the Geological In Situ Reserve which is considered mineable under a specific mining plan. The third is the Mining Reserve adjusted with appropriate dilution and recovery factors and thus represents the best estimate of the tonnage and grade of production. This practical three category system mirrors the standard steps traditionally taken in ore reserve estimation and readily conveys the basis of the estimates. An important, but secondary classification can be added to qualify the level of confidence in these estimates using the terms: Proved (or Measured) Probable (or Indicated) Possible (or Inferred) These terms can be applied to any of the fundamental groupings, but it is generally implicit that the level of detail required to produce meaningful Mining Reserves or Production Estimates would require the basic Geological Reserve to be at a Proved or at least Probable level of confidence. The application of these classification systems by Pancontinental is illustrated by reference to the Paddington Gold Project. The methods of calculation are described including the use of geostatistics. Reconciliations of actual production with predictions from reserves are carried out monthly and annually. To date there has been an excellent correlation with Production Estimates, based on both manual and geostatistical calculations.

Abstract - Coarse gold-bearing veins are characterized by high grades that are localized and erratic. Effective sampling of coarse gold-bearing veins is difficult because of the low concentration and erratic nature of the gold particles. Diamond drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however, grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development (including close-spaced sampling, bulk sampling, and trial mining). Comparison between surface and underground drilling, underground linear/panel and bulk sampling indicate that drilling and linear/ panel samples generally understate bulk sample grades. Bulk samples are likely to be the closest estimators of true grade. It is unlikely that anything above an Inferred Resource category can be estimated from surface drilling alone, and at best the grade will only be a global estimate. Underground development, in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Resources. Closely spaced development and bulk sampling is likely to be the only way to determine Reserves. The resource estimation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand both geological and grade continuity. Traditionally, grade interpolation has been undertaken using classical methods, though more recently, computer-based block modelling techniques have been used with some success. Three case histories are presented, documenting the problems of estimating resources in coarse gold-bearing veins and the practical ways in which they were approached.

The increasing use of continuous miners in the extraction of high coal seams has amplified the need for enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Owing to larger face dimensions and higher production rates, more ventilating air is required to effectively dilute liberated methane to acceptable concentrations. However, the increased air quantities raise and entrain greater amounts of dust, to which the operator is subjected. Various methods (eg sprayfans, on-board scrubbers and jet fans) are used in various configurations and combinations to ventilate the headings. These arrangements generally result in a complex air flow pattern, which complicates achieving an optimum balance between diluting methane and minimising dust capture. In order to cost effectively investigate and propose solutions to this problem for the South African coal mining industry, the Division of Mining Technology has embarked on an extensive work program to evaluate various ventilation methods presently in use. Four currently generic ventilation patterns in various heading scenarios have been simulated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer program. Evaluating these outputs against a predetermined set of criteria allows the best system for a particular situation to be chosen. The program also facilitates fine-tuning of an adopted system without incurring the cost and inconvenience of doing such tests in situ. This process not only provides solutions at significantly reduced costs, but also yields deeper insights into the factors affecting heading ventilation than hitherto possible.

"High explosives are generally shipped in stout wooden boxes of convenient size, which are much sought after by miners and others for miscellaneous uses after they are emptied. The management of most mines has no fixed policy for the disposal of used dynamite boxes and will allow any one to carry them away. Many dynamite boxes are nailed up in the mine buildings or underground to serve as shelves and cupboards. Some are used as receptacles for odds and ends, and others are used in taking samples.Although used explosives containers are so generally put to beneficial service, there is nevertheless an element of danger in their use. Dynamite boxes are particularly dangerous. Very often nitroglycerin exudes from the dynamite sticks and is absorbed by the wood of the box. Such boxes are dangerous because they are very explosive. Although a box that has not absorbed nitroglycerin is safe, yet there is always the danger that a person will get a box that is partly saturated.On account of this danger, all mining companies should use extreme care in giving away used explosives containers. Some one individual who is acquainted with explosives and their peculiarities should act as inspector for every container given away. This job may best be handled by the man in charge of the powder magazines. A box that shows any stain of nitroglycerin should be destroyed by fire. The other boxes that are free from nitroglycerin or dynamite can be used."

Slurry density measurement, specially in cyclone feed streams, is fundamental to grinding circuit control. With the purpose of increasing the availability of such a measurement, the design of a soft-sensor in an actual grinding plant is addressed in this paper. The system is designed to substitute the momentary unavailability of the real density sensor, either because it has failed or because it has been removed for any other reason. The ARMAX model structure is determined using the stepwise regression method. Starting with a list of the candidate variables, the method selects, one by one, and in a systematic manner the variables which best model the measurement to be replaced, choosing them from the set of presumably correlated candidate variables. In this paper not only the single measurements are included in the list of candidates, but also combinations of such measurements having physical significance. A phenomenological model has been built with the purpose of determining these combinations. It turned out that in most of the cases the components of combined measurements having physical significance were selected by the stepwise regression method, instead of the single measurements. Actual grinding plant data is used to determine the model structure, to estimate the model parameters and to test the predictive capability of the developed soft-sensors. Good results are shown to be obtained during periods of up to 30 hours of the density soft-sensor operation.

Two new precipitation hardening copper-base alloys, Cu-1.5pct Ti-2.5 pct Sn and Cu-1.5 pct Ti-2.5 pct Sn-0.4 pct Cr were developed. High strength and medium conductivity are obtained by solution annealing and subsequent heat treatment. Combination of solution annealing, cold working, and heat treatment increases the strength further. Good elevated temperature strength and ductility makes these alloys superior to copper-beryllium-cobalt alloys. A considerable amount of research work is being done throughout the world to develop new and improved copper-base alloys. In many cases, the object is to develop alloys having a combination of high electrical and thermal conductivities, and high strength. The problem is complicated by the fact that any alloying element added to increase strength, invariably decreases conductivity. Among the few commercial precipitation hardening type copper-base alloys, the Cu-Be-Co alloys are best known. These alloys are used in many applications that require good spring characteristics cornbined with high strength and moderately high electrical conductivity. They can be formed readily after solution annealing, then heat treated to obtain high strength and conductivity. Because of the relatively high cost of the Cu-Be-Co alloys, considerable research has been aimed at developing new lower cost alloys having similar properties. MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

In the Mount Victor area of the Eastern Highlands Province, re- connaissance geological mapping and new micropalaeontological data have revealed the existence of at least three small thrust- bound windows exposing late Middle to Late Cretaceous (Late Aptian-Early Albian and Late Santonian-Maastrichtian) sedimen- tary rocks and pillow lavas, Latest Paleocene- Earliest Eocene pillow lavas, and Latest Paleocene-Earliest Eocene bathyal micrites. Late Middle Eocene to Late Eocene inner neritic bioclastic micrite units also occurs in thrust contact with Middle Miocene Yaveufa Formation volcanolithic conglomerates. The Cretaceous and Early Tertiary units appear to be thrust-bound and are best exposed in a window just south of Mount Victor, and in two smaller windows to the east. The inner neritic Eocene limestone occurs in a thrust-bound sliver within the Yaveufa For- mation near Obura. The windows occur within extensive out- crop of Early Miocene Omaura Formation and the Yaveufa For- mation. Thin-bedded grey mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, typical of much of the Chim Formation form only a small part of the exposure of Cretaceous rocks. Thick-bedded volcanolithic conglomerate, spilitic pillow basalts, and welded basic tuffs domi- nate the Cretaceous section. The stratigraphy and structure of the Mount Victor area is similar to the Menyamya area, the Aure Scarp, and perhaps the Tapini area. This study has raised the possibility of widespread thrust- ing in the Kainantu area, and suggests that the boundary between the Omaura and Yaveufa Formations is thrusted, at least locally.

The Altair Hydrochloride Pigment Process is a new ?third route?, besides the established high-temperature chloride process and the older sulfate process, to manufacture TiO2 pigment from ilmenite ore. It has been tested at a scale of 5 t/day feed. The ore concentrate is digested in high-acid, high total chloride solution (+/- 39% Cl). Titanium and iron both go into solution. Iron is separated as FeCl2 crystals after reduction and cooling. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, high-Ti stream. It is spray-hydrolyzed to produce a TiO2 hydrate and further calcined with additives into high-quality pigment. HCl solutions generated by pyrohydrolysis and spray hydrolysis are treated by pressure-swing distillation to regenerate HCl gas for re-injection into the digestion reactor. All chloride streams are recycled. Recent work has concentrated on optimization, particularly in 3 areas: - Solvent extraction: a new organic mixture, including a new diluent, makes it possible to work at room temperature, to avoid TiO2 hydrolysis problems and to improve phase disengagement and impurity separation. - Pigment finishing: a systematic study of the parameters involved, followed by long runs in the best conditions confirm pigment quality. - Flow sheet optimization: innovative modifications of the conditions of spray hydrolysis and pyrohydrolysis, combined with re-routing of streams achieve significant energy savings. A 100 t/year pilot plant including these features as well as other process improvements is under construction.

In this research, in order to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV)(as vibration indicator) caused by blasting projects in the excavations of the Karoun III power plant and dam, three techniques including statistical, empirical, and neural network were used and their results were interpreted and compared. First, multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) was used as statistical approach. Next, PPV was predicted using some widely used empirical models. Lastly, an artificial neural network was used. In the ANN model, maximum charge per delay, total charge per round, distance from blast site, direction of firing, blasthole length, number of blastholes, total delay in milliseconds, number of delay intervals, and average specific charge were taken into consideration as input parameters and consequently the PPV as output parameter. The results of the techniques were interpreted from two points of view. Firstly, the correlation between the observed data and predicted ones, secondly the total error between observed data and predicted ones. The MVRA had a satisfactory correlation but its error of estimation was comparatively very high. The empirical model had reliable correlation and a small error of estimation; in total the results of empirical method were more reliable than those of MVRA. Generally, the ANN approach showed very high correlation and a very small error. The results of this research indicated that the ANN model is the best predicting model for PPV in comparison with other approaches.

THE manufacture of gas masks by the Chemical Warfare Service, U. S. A., required preparation of the carbon used in the canisters. The largest plant for the production of this carbon was situated at the works of the Astoria Light, Heat and Power Co., at Astoria, N. Y.; this paper will deal1 with the pyrometry equipment at that plant. Commercial charcoal was found unsuitable for use in gas masks because of its low power of absorption and its poor resistance to abrasion. The best raw material for the production of carbon was found to be coconut shells, but any kind of nut shells or fruit pits were used when sufficient quantities of coconut shells could not be obtained. The shells were first carbonized in retorts, the carbon was then crushed and screened between 8 and 16 mesh, and finally submitted to a special heat-treatment in air; steam treatment was later substituted for treatment in air. The production of gas-mask carbon on a commercial scale was begun at Astoria about Aug. 1, 1917. Temperature control was essential during the initial carbonization of the shells, as well as during the air or steam treatment, and pyrometers were installed for this purpose. The installation and maintenance of all pyrometry equipment was done by the pyrometry department, consisting of an officer in charge, an assistant, and two men. A special pyrometry laboratory was maintained in which all repairs were made.

SOME time ago, the writer received from W. 0. Borcherdt, Manager of the, works of the Bertha Mineral Co. at Austinville, Va., several specimens of a dense yellowish slag-like material, containing cavities showing clear needle-like crystals, and representing a product formed by the fumes of zinc oxide and basic lead sulphate from the oxide furnace, attacking the firebrick lining of the flues. The matrix, which is of a greenish-yellow color, is made up chiefly of an amorphous glass, carrying numerous crystals, the latter being well-defined, clear, and transparent, but colored a very light yellow by small amounts of ferric oxide. A number of the crystals were carefully separated from the matrix and tested with the blowpipe. They have a fusibility of about 2, yield a globule of lead and a coating of lead oxide before the blowpipe on charcoal, and contain some zinc. Their hardness is 5 to 6. 1 Fig. 1. Under the microscope the crystals appear to be made up of a prism, with narrow faces, and a fairly large pinacoid, but unfortunately show no terminal faces (Fig. 1). Between crossed nicols they gave parallel extinction in. the three planes containing the crystallographic axes, and are therefore orthorhombic. The index of refraction is high. Bench-scale research at the Bureau of Mines has resulted in the successful development of a combination electrorefining-electrowinning method for recycling all the lead in scrap batteries. The method reduces energy consumption and eliminates toxic emissions, in contrast to present pyrometallurgical smelting, and the lead produced is pure enough for use in maintenance-free batteries. Anodes cast from molten lead scrap were electrorefined in 1-and 2-liter plastic cells using an electrolyte composition of 70 g/l Pb and 90 g/l free H2SiF6 (fluosilicic acid). Both reagent-grade and waste H2SiF6 were used. Cathode starting sheets were made from refined lead. Aloes, and later bone gelatin, and calcium lignin sulfonate addition agents were employed. The sludge remaining after separation of the lead metal was treated in a two-step leaching operation to solubilize the lead for recovery by electrowinning. Conditions for electrowinning were essentially the same as for electro-refining, except that insoluble Pb02-Ti (lead dioxide-coated titanium) anodes were used. The best results for both electrorefining and electrowinning were obtained with a current density of 170 amp/m2 and a cell temperature of 25° to 35° C. Cathode purity ranged from about 99.9 to 99.99+ pct Pb. Maximum energy consumption after 3 days, for electrorefining and electrowinning, was 90 and 700 kwhr per metric ton of refined lead, respectively.

The effect of high solids concentration and coarse particle sizes (d50 ranges 90?300 µm) on the viscosity of a suspension of water and silica sand was investigated. The experiments were designed to include conditions that have been tested by other authors and those encountered in the operation of tumbling mills. The rheological data was measured using a tube rheometer with operating pseudo shear rates of up to 1500 s-1. The rheograms obtained depicted dilatant behaviour. The Otswald-de Waele, Bingham, Herschel-Buckley and Casson models were fitted to the experimental data. The Herschel-Buckely model, which approximates the yield point and gives an indication of the shear thinning or shear thickening behaviour of the suspension, was found to provide the best description of the flow curves for all slurries. The Herschel-Buckely model was then used to determine the apparent viscosity of all the tests. The apparent viscosity and yield stress increased with solids concentration and particle size at the different pseudo shear rates. The increase in slurry viscosity with solids concentration was attributed to increased frequency of particle-particle interactions. The increase in slurry viscosity with particle size was attributed to increased inertial effects. At low shear rates the sand slurry exhibited shear thinning behaviour for all solids concentrations. At higher shear rates above 1000 s-1the high solids concentration suspensions exhibited a transition from shear thinning to a shear thickening behaviour.

"Abstract - The Halfmile Lake South Deep zone, Bathurst Mining Camp, New Brunswick, was discovered by Noranda Inc. (Exploration) as a result of a 3-D seismic survey in 1998 and the subsequent drilling of ten diamond-drill cores. The deposit consists of massive, breccia, and stockwork Pb-Zn-Cu sulfide minerals, and is hosted by a volcano-sedimentary sequence belonging to the overturned Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Epiclastic rocks and interbedded fine-grained felsic pyroclastic rocks dominate the stratigraphic footwall. Locally, crystal-rich felsic tuffs and subordinate epiclastic rocks comprise the immediate stratigraphic hanging wall. The entire stratigraphic sequence was intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyritic intrusions, and cut by intermediate and basic dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks can be discriminated geochemically using trace element ratios such as Zr/TiO2 and Nb/TiO2, despite intensive alteration and cleavage development. These ratios indicate that four protolith volcanic compositions exist: rhyolite, dacite, andesite, and basalt. The aphyric and feldspar- and quartz-phyric volcanic rocks are dacitic and rhyolitic in composition; epiclastic rocks have trace element ratios consistent with dacitic compositions. Pearce element ratio diagrams, general element ratio diagrams, and petrographic observations demonstrate that the rhyolitic volcanic rocks exhibit evidence of albite, potassium feldspar, and quartz fractionation, dacitic volcanic rocks exhibit little evidence of any fractionation, and epiclastic sedimentary rocks exhibit evidence of quartz sorting only. Hydrothermal alteration is best represented by the presence of phengitic muscovite and daphnitic chlorite. Minor calcite occurs in the stratigraphic hanging wall, deep in the stratigraphic footwall, and in post-mineralization dikes, and thus is not interpreted to be part of the causative hydrothermal event. Element additions and losses during alteration have been used to determine net alteration reactions, and these have been used to identify alteration parameters that are independent of other forms of alteration and fractionation/sorting, and which can be used to guide exploration. These parameters include: a bulk hydrolysis measure, (2Ca+Na+K-2CO2)/Al; a muscovite alteration measure, K/Al; an albite destruction measure, Na/Al; a chlorite alteration measure, (Fe+Mg-S/2)/Al; a chlorite composition measure, (Fe-S/2)/Mg; a sulfidization measure, S/Ti; and a carbonatization measure, CO2/Ti. With the exception of the carbonatization measure, these alteration parameters define a distinct lateral and vertical zone of intense hydrothermal alteration in the stratigraphic footwall of the deposit, and demonstrate that the epiclastic rocks are predominantly chlorite altered, and the volcanic rocks are predominantly muscovite altered. Within the alteration halo, element additions of Fe and H, and element losses of Na are characteristic. Potassium was added to muscovite-altered rocks, but subsequently removed from chlorite-altered rocks. The results from this study demonstrate that metamorphism and deformation have not significantly obscured hydrothermal alteration signatures."

"Equity Silver Mines Limited, Canada's largest silver mine, has designed, built and operated a leach plant to reduce the levels of antimony and arsenic in its silver-gold-copper flotation concentrate. The orebody contained deleterious antimony and arsenic minerals in such proportions that the economic long-term sales contracts necessary to obtain project financing could not be procured. Construction of the leach plant therefore allowed development of the mine to proceed. Although the plant took some time to reach design throughput and product specifications, due to the complex and unique nature of the operation, these goals were successfully met and surpassed. This paper describes the physical plant and/or process technology modifications made to mold the main processes-concentrate leaching and filtering, autoclaving and filtration of by-products, and crystallization of salt cake-into an effective, economic operation.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited, a member of the Placer Development Group, owns and operates an open-pit silver mine and related facilities located 37 kilometres southeast of Houston in north-central British Columbia. The mine occupies a 44 I-hectare (1089 acre) site at an elevation of 1300 metres (4265 feet) on the Nechako Plateau. Producing a copper concentrate containing high values of silver and gold, it is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the largest in the western world. Equity stresses open communications, positive motivation, and production with safety, and achieved the best mine safety record in western Canada in 1984."
