Replacing diesel power in underground metal mining vehicles with available clean energy (e.g. hydrogen, lithium-ion batteries) is now a priority due to worker health issues, the increasing price of diesel, ventilation costs and air quality. Hydrogen fuel cells are a known and broadly applied power technology. They have been the focus of a dedicated research program to carry our proof of concept projects as well as regulatory developments for mining application. However, hydrogen remains a demanding energy vector to use in confined, underground applications. Standardization and safety considerations are being addressed in the industrial consortium Hydrogen Mine Introduction Initiative (HMII). Research projects are being carried out to resolve the gaps for regulated use. This article focuses on HMII objectives and Project results. The first has reviewed the relevant codes and standards and mine regulations, indicating that hydrogen and fuel cells could be allowed underground and that current codes, especially the Canadian Hydrogen Installation Code would be sufficient for hydrogen use. The second project established the standard hydrogen storage and distribution architecture along with related risks and safety requirements for its use in the third project, using an underground test chamber to delineate the behaviour of hydrogen leaks in confined conditions with various ventilation regimes and ignition studies. This project will end in 2013. It will be followed by the last project, which will establish best practices in support of regulations development, and develop the ISO standard for mine hydrogen infrastructure and underground application.

A NUMBER of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing.. These publications demonstrate both, the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish -to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. Large quantities of zinc-base die-cast scrap containing 3 to 4 percent aluminum are presently refined by mixing with other secondary zinc products such as galvanizer dross and distilling in a retort. The Bureau of Mines investigated alternate aluminum removal processes utilizing low-cost fluxes. Basing the investigation on the metallurgical principle that a reactive impurity can be removed from a less reactive matrix metal by melting under a flux consisting of a salt or oxide of a metal less reactive than the impurity, three separate flux mixtures were studied. In the first flux system, [FeCl3] + NaCI (the active component is underlined), part of the aluminum is' eliminated by the formation of volatile aluminum chloride and the rest by the creation of a high melting point iron-aluminum intermetallic compound that can be separated from the remaining molten zinc by filtration. Aluminum removal in the second system, [Fe203] + CaClz + NaCI, is effected by the formation of the iron-aluminum compound and possibly aluminum oxide. The third system, spent sal skimmings--essentially a mixture of [ZnCl2], NH4Cl, and ZnO, depends solely on aluminum chloride formation. Of the three flux systems investigated, the best results obtained were with system 3. Aluminum was reduced in the molten die-cast alloy from 4.10 percent to 0.01 percent when depleted sal skimmings were used.

Pyrite is the most abundant and widespread sulphide mineral and its flotation has been investigated by many researchers. It is well known that, pyrite is floatable under acidic conditions and recovery drops with increase in alkalinity due to changes in solubility of iron hydroxides on the pyrite surface. Most of the works also revealed out that pyrite displays variable behaviour in flotation circuits. This behaviour mainly related with origin and mineralogical composition of ore, liberation size, electrochemical behavior of minerals constituting ore, the trace and minor element content of the mineral, texture, application variables belonging to flotation circuits. In this study, copper activation effect was examined on different origin of pyrites. The experiments were performed with five high grade samples of pyrite from the different mining districts of Turkey. The pyrite samples were different from each other with respect to either their physical or chemical properties; they were different physical appearances and contained different associated minerals. In the micro-flotation tests, 1x10-4 mole/L copper sulphate and 1x10-4 potassium ethyl xanthate were used as flotation reagents. First of all pyrite samples were floated using only xanthate at different pH. Results showed that best floatation results obtained at acidic pH range for all pyrite samples. When copper ions were used to activate, all pyrite samples floated at neutral and basic pH values, too but depending on the samples, recovery and pH ranges were slightly changed.

INTRODUCTION A greater understanding is required about the factors which control tunneling operations if we are to meet the expected demand for tunnels. Much of the needed information can best be achieved by the proper use of instrumentation and advanced engineering concepts. Tunnel measurements and their analysis may prove to be the key which will give the insight necessary to understand the relationship of rock, tunnel supports, and linings. There are three main areas which can be improved through the use of tunnel instrumentation. First, and of prime importance, is safety for men and the project. When unstable conditions occur, sets become distorted. Even without measurements, it is sometimes possible to tell when trouble is approaching. In effect, the set acts as a load cell. Distortions in the set indicate reinforcements may be required to maintain stability. Additional sets or rock bolts, if they are placed soon enough, may provide this stability. However, when large rock displacements occur in short periods of time, it could be too late. Figure 1 is an example of the difficulties encountered in stopping moving rock. To stop the movement and possible failure, large props were placed above the spring line and the massive concrete gravity buttress was constructed along the legs. Rock bolts from the buttress deep into the rock were also used in an attempt to stabilize the rock mass. However, this work is for a highway tunnel and eventually these props and buttresses must be removed.

SANDSTONE has been prepared for glassmaking purposes, and marketed from the White River Valley in-Arkansas at Guion, Izard County, since about 1910-soon after the completion of the White River Branch of the Missouri Pacific R. R. Co. Until 1921, operations were somewhat spasmodic and ended in many failures. In that year a plant was built by the Silica Products Co., Inc., and since that time the operation has been continuous and steady. The land is held under leases, covering about 30 sq. mi. of the best sandstone adjacent to the railroad. Most of the product is shipped to glassmakers. GEOLOGY The St. Peter sandstone is rather widely distributed in north central Arkansas and- is exposed most prominently in outcrops along the slopes of the White River Valley and its tributaries that form the division between the Boston Mountains to the south and the Salem Plateau of the Ozarks to the north. It is of Ordovician age and is generally underlain by Cotter dolomite and capped by Plattin limestone, except in the vicinity of Bellefonte and Everton. At those places, it is a massive cross-bedded, laminated, saccharoidal sandstone; underlying it is the Everton limestone and overlying it, the Joachim magnesium limestone. The sandstone at Everton contains numerous phosphatic pebbles and inclusions of sandy limestone. The irregularity of cross-section, the evidence of sorting action and the phosphatic pebbles appear to be indications of secondary deposition.

IRON oxide .(Fe0) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of steel. In the open-hearth furnace and the Bessemer converter it is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large extent both the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their products. Almost all of the refining action is carried out through the medium of FeO, which oxidizes carbon, manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. At the end of any open-hearth or Bessemer heat the steel contains dissolved iron oxide, which must be wholly or partly eliminated. The type of deoxidation product depends on the amount of dissolved iron oxide and on the deoxidizer used. After the heat has been deoxidized and while it is being teemed, iron oxide diffuses from the ladle slag into the metal, causing losses of deoxidizer and increase in iron oxide content of the steel. It is generally believed that non-metallic inclusions are responsible for a great many failures of steel in service and for decreased yield of steel during rolling. The basis of most non-metallic inclusions is dissolved iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken in order to determine the amount of iron oxide that will dissolve in iron under various conditions. Steel-making slags are complex and it has been thought best to determine solubility under simple slags as a first step. The study is being continued under slags whose compositions approach those of operating. slags.

In 2005, Glass Earth Limited (GEL) commissioned two large area detailed airborne geophysical programmes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). In the first survey Bell Geospace Ltd of Scotland conducted an Air-FTG« (airborne Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry) survey covering 2338km2 at 300m line spacing. The second survey by UTS Geophysics, Australia included detailed airborne magnetic, radiometric and digital terrain data capture covering 5341km2 at 150m line spacing.   From the detailed geophysical data collected it is possible to identify major deeply penetrative crustal structures within the TVZ, as well as define subsurface geological features, such as intrusive bodies and alteration zones. These major deep crustal structures are thought to have a controlling influence on the distribution of epithermal gold mineralising systems, and along the corridors defined by these deep crustal zones, the chances of discovery of an economic epithermal gold discovery are greatly increased.   In this paper GEL gives some examples of the application of its integrated data driven approach to exploration in the TVZ at both regional and project scale. The paper focuses on how GEL identifies regional scale highly prospective deep crustal structures. Then, using the Horohoro epithermal gold system as an example, we show how GEL applies innovative geological and geophysical data processing to model and understand detailed subsurface geology, focusing subsequent exploration to ensure the best opportunity for a new economic epithermal gold discovery.

"The cost of energy is a growing factor in the cost of zinc production. Electrowinning from sulphate solutions with periodical reverse current or from acidic chloride or alkaline solutions could be the way to lower costs. A comparison of the energy consumption for electrolysis shows that the alkaline solution may be considered the most promising alternative. IntroductionZinc electrowinning from sulphate solutions is a very energy intensive process (typical specific energy usage : around 3.1 kWh / kg zinc). This energy consumption represents 35% of the total cost of electrolysis and is the most important cost component.In order to lower costs, the energy efficiency of the sulphate process should be improved or alternative processes should be developed. In this laboratory, that objective has resulted in research on electro winning in sulphate solutions with the use of periodical reverse current (PRC) and in acidic chloride and alkaline solutions.Some of the results obtained in this laboratory and already published and new experimental results reported in this paper make it possible to present a more critical comparison of the energy consumption of the three processes mentioned.ExperimentalThe experiments at constant current were carried out as described previously. Specific conditions are indicated in Table I. Current efficiencies were obtained by weighing deposits.ResultsThe best energy consumptions for electrolysis obtained in this laboratory for the three media are presented in Table I. The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

The dressing-works of the St. Joseph Lead Company were destroyed by fire, February 26th, 1883. Within about four months, or on July 5th, 1883, the new mill, with a capacity of 500 tons per day, was built and in active operation. The capacity of the new mill has since been increased to 800 tons per day. The old mill was built in 1867, by Mr. C. B. Parsons, the present superintendent. It was a curious rambling old structure, which had grown with the demands of the business; a few jigs having been added in one place, a table or two in another and wings and sheds added to the main buildings, from time to time, as it was found necessary to increase the efficiency or the capacity of the mill. The old mill was, moreover, a most interesting place to the student, a perfect "museum of ore-dressing." Nearly every form of dressing apparatus known to the art had, at one time or another, found a place under its roof, jigs of many kinds, concave, convex, side-bump and stationary tables, tyes, buddles, dolly-tubs, etc., etc. The method of dressing followed in the main the lines of English practice, but with many modifications, both in the machinery and the methods of working, due to the inventive genius of Mr. Parsons. Risk-based roadway roof support design is now a critical part of the Australian Coal Industry. Safe and efficient mining demands that roof support be tailored to the prevailing geotechnical conditions and coal mining legislation in New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania is clear in requiring that formalized roof support design be undertaken. The assumption of dead-load suspension of an otherwise unstable roof has been used in roadway roof support design for many years. However longevity does not necessarily translate into either a best or even reasonable practice in the current industry, particularly when pro-active strata management systems are now routinely used and reinforcing support design methods are available. The paper discusses why the assumption of dead-load suspension is fundamentally incorrect in almost all instances when pro-active or reinforcing roof support is applied and how it can easily result in misleading and potentially under-designed roof support systems under various circumstances. The commonly used design methodology of balancing the installed axial capacity of long tendons with the assumed ?weight? of a future roof fall is summarized, and several fundamental flaws are identified. The critical area of selecting the design Factor of Safety is also discussed in detail. Accepting that under certain circumstances the roof of a roadway will require it to be ?suspended?, suggestions are given for how a robust support system can be developed, designed and applied.

Stabiity analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this US. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

Since 1910, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has investigated practical ways of dealing with the consequences of major fires and explosions in underground mines. The results of this research have had a significant positive impact on the mining community by enhancing mine workers’ chances of surviving an underground mine disaster. Today, the Bureau continues to conduct research in mine disaster mitigation. Much of this work has direct application to search and rescue situations, such as: emergency evacuation through smoke-filled or otherwise unbreathable atmospheres, locating and rescuing survivors from rubble piles, and fire fighting in confined spaces. Three USBM research areas are discussed: (1) Life Support -- This effort is directed toward research into and development of closed-circuit breathing apparatus for use in hazardous environments which are likely to be encountered in the aftermath of a mine disaster. (2) Trapped Miner Location -- A mine disaster may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal escape routes are cut-off. This research activity resulted in the development of transportable seismic technology that can be used to locate trapped miners. (3) Mine Fire Diagnostics -- This research involves developing practical techniques for remotely monitoring how the atmosphere inside a mine changes during a fire, in order to estimate the spread and severity of an underground fire. This information is critical in deciding how best to fight a mine fire, or whether it is safe to mount a rescue and recovery mission.

A GRAPHICAL method of analyzing the data obtained from shallow earth-resistivity depth tests is presented. The method is based upon empirical results and has no theoretical basis. The usual apparent resistivity-electrode spacing curve is used together with a cumulative resistivity-electrode spacing curve plotted on the same sheet. The greatly reduced scale required for plotting the cumulative values of resistivity together with the effect of the summation of the individual resistivity values serves to minimize the effect of purely local surface anomalies and inadvertent errors of measurement. The point of intersection of tangents or straight lines drawn to intersect at zones of maximum curvature in the cumulative curve indicates the depth to the underlying material. Numerous figures are presented in which data from published reports and from recent field studies are analyzed and the results compared with actual depths established by borings or with depth values obtained by the use of theoretical methods of analysis. Smoothly rounded curves of apparent resistivity such as are often obtained in the field, and which have been a serious drawback to attempts to analyze the data empirically heretofore, appear to be susceptible to rather accurate analysis by the method described. The method is best suited to analyses involving shallow two-layer formations. It has been applied successfully, however, in analyzing the data obtained from tests made over shallow three-layer formations. As with most empirical methods, its chief advantage is its simplicity and ease of application.

Optimising drill performance has always been a primary goal of drilling and blasting managers. Improving drilling rates and utilisation will ultimately drive the cost per foot or metre downward. Additionally, more consistent production will ensure shovel or dragline performance goals are met and the chances of machine idle time is minimised. Over the past 20 years, many studies have examined rotary drilling factors and performance issues. In most cases a common theory points to energy input versus drilling output. Indexes such as specific energy and total work energy have been -developed to quantify the drilling process. As general engineering principles dictate, energy is required to drill rock by overcoming compressive and shear strengths. Concurrently, the greater the energy input, the faster the penetration output. Therefore, by examining the basic drilling energy parameters, optimisation is possible. The principles of rotary drilling are driven by five factors. When optimised individually and as a system, drill performance will improve. Most recent studies all agree that a performance relationship exists between bit load, bit rotation, and hole flushing. Additionally, proper bit selection and most of all, the operator, can have a tremendous effect on drill productivity. By analysing these factors and establishing the best case scenario, an overall drilling system can be engineered to match the mining characteristics. Furthermore, by balancing these factors, a lower cost will be achieved through increased production rates, maintenance costs, and effective drill utilisation.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1.
