The Cawse nickel-cobalt operation is situated 50 km NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, at latitude30o22'30'' south and longitude 121o08'30'' east on the Kalgoorlie 1:250 000 geological map sheet (SH 51-9) (see Figure 1). The project is owned and operated by Centaur Nickel Pty Ltd (CTR) and was the first in Australia to commercially produce nickel metal and cobalt sulphide through pressure acid leach (PAL) technology. Cawse has a total resource base (all categories of resources + reserves) of 213 million tonnes Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni and 0.04 per cent Co, comprising 127 Mt at Cawse Central which is 100 per cent owned by CTR and 86 Mt at Cawse Extended where CTR has a 80 per cent equity. Cawse Extended is located immediately to the northwest of the Cawse Central leases. All current reserves (proved and probable) of 30 Mt at 1.0 per cent nickel are contained within Cawse Central. In addition the Siberia project area 20 kilometres to the NW has a resource of 63 Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni. Cawse is a dry laterite deposit, with nickel and cobalt hosted by iron and manganese oxides. Cawse Central mineralisation extends over a ten kilometre strike length, with three pits currently being mined. The Bunyip pit has the premier nickel and cobalt grades within Cawse Central. There are seven dominant lithology types forming mappable units within current pit exposures. Four of these units are host to nickel and cobalt mineralisation. Ore types are defined as Upgrade, Grind and Non-upgrade, depending on their physical characteristics with respect to the treatment route. Mining commenced in February 1998. To the end of calender 1999 the operation has produced 2100 tonnes nickel plate and 470 tonnes of cobalt as a cobalt sulphide product. Future production will target 9000 tonnes per annum Ni metal and up to 2000 tonnes per annum Co, based on processing 500 000 tonnes of ore per annum.

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.

The selectivity in flotation columns involving the separation of particles of varying degrees of floatability is based on differential flotation rates in the collection zone, reflux action between the froth and collection zones, and differential detachment rates in the froth zone. Using well known theoretical models describing the separation process and experimental data, froth zone and overall flotation recovery values were quantified for particles in an anthracite coal that have a wide range of floatability potential. For highly floatable particles, froth recovery had a very minimal impact on overall recovery while the recovery of weakly floatable material was decreased substantially by reductions in froth recovery values. In addition, under carrying-capacity limiting conditions, selectivity was enhanced by the preferential detachment of the weakly floatable material. Based on this concept, highly floatable material was added directly into the froth zone when treating the anthracite coal. The enriched froth phase reduced the product ash content of the anthracite product by five absolute percentage points while maintaining a constant recovery value.

Regulation of mineral property valuation methodology by governments and others is due to frauds, condemnation and takings, banking industry problems, and litigation. Definitions of "reserves," "resources," and "qualified person" continue to evolve, along with guidelines to the data and disclosure required to support valuations. A less recognized but vital issue relates to the regulatory acceptability of alternatives to the comparable sales method. Comparable sales generally work well for surface real estate, and sometimes for precious metal deposits, but not at all for most industrial mineral properties. Alternative methods, such as net present value, or a geoscience rating system, often provide better valuations. Yet US regulations dictate comparable sales as the preferred method. The task of convincing regulators of the inapplicability of comparable sales to mineral properties, particularly those lacking reserves, may be as important as the valuation itself.

The lignite deposit at Onakawana on the Abitibi river is of particular interest at the present time, since the Ontario Government has recently decided to proceed with the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to James bay. Forty-five miles of steel will be laid this year to the crossing of the Moose river. This will cross the lignite field. It has been known for many years that lignite occurred in the Moose River basin, but it was not until drilling was commenced at Blacksmith rapids (or Onakawana, as the camp is now known) in June, 1929, that a seam of economic thickness and extent was found. Early in 1929 the Ontario Legislature voted $25,000 for the carrying out of a drilling programme in the Moose River basin. This came as a culmination of two summers' exploratory work by the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines, and as the result of a report which said; in effect, that further information concerning the mineral resources of the basin could only be obtained by drilling, and that such a drilling programme was well worth while in order to establish once for all whether lignite, fire-clay, or oil or gas did or did not exist in economic quantities in the region.

The Bureau of Mines made laboratory-scale experiments to examine the technical possibilities of reclaiming manganese from slags produced by oxygen lancing of high-manganese pig iron. Ferromanganese was added to molten pig iron to yield a 4-to 5-percent manganese hot metal, which simulated a product obtainable from the blast furnace. This was injected with oxygen to reduce the metal to 1 percent or less manganese and form a slag containing about 40 percent manganese. The molten slag was water-quenched, treated with H2SO4) roasted at 660° C, and water-leached to give soluble manganese and iron sulfates. The sulfates were precipitated as hydroxides, converted to the oxide form, and smelted to produce a standard ferromanganese containing 74.6 percent Mn and 0.01 percent P. As an alternate method of manganese recovery, a manganese cell feed was prepared from the leach solutions and electrolytic manganese was produced. Direct smelting of the high-manganese slag resulted in 74.2 ferromanganese meeting ASTM specifications except for phosphorus content. The high phosphorus content of the metal and high slag-to-metal ratio obtained made this approach unattractive.

"Failures of coal ribs are major hazards in underground coal mines. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls were the leading cause of groundfall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to reduce rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines. Numerical models can be used as part of the design methodology provided the models are appropriately calibrated and verified. The paper presents a coal rib model to simulate the mechanism of the coal deformation and fracturing that can lead to stress-driven rib falls. The proposed coal rib model was calibrated against published data from an instrumented rib site at the West Cliff mine in Australia. Fracturing of the coal rib was defined by critical values of shear strain of the coal material and rib displacement. A critical plastic shear strain of 2.8% and a sudden increase of rib displacement of 30 to 45 mm were sufficient to develop a fracture plane in the rib model. Accordingly, a discontinuous rib deformation was achieved and it compared favorably against field monitoring data. INTRODUCTION Coal ribs are the vertical walls of coal formed when entries are developed in a coal bed. Failures of coal ribs are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can contribute indirectly to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the last 18 years, there has been a continual occurrence of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines due to rib falls. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls (excluding longwall face and bursts) were the leading cause of ground fall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities [1]. Despite the threat of rib falls, the amount of rib falls and rib support research conducted in the U.S. is limited compared with what has been done in pillar and roof support design. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to minimize the number of rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines."

The areas are identified where the techniques of operations research have been applied in the petroleum industry. Particular emphasis is given to the linear program models that have been used for solving management problems. Of the entire gamut of applications for linear programming, attention is focused on the models that represent underground reservoirs. Such models could be used to help schedule drilling rig operations and to schedule oil production. A framework is established for placing the model for underground reservoirs in the proper perspective along with the models which represent other facets of the oil business. One of the remarkable phenomena of this century is the rapid growth in the size and' complexity of human organizations. The mere size of modern business means that administrative decisions can affect vast quantities of capital and large number of people. Mistakes can be tremendously costly, and a single wrong decision can require years for rectification. Moreover, the pace of modern business is such that decisions are required more rapidly than ever before; the mere postponement of action can give a decided advantage to a competitor. It is not surprising that the increase in difficulty of decision making has been followed by efforts to put this activity on a more objective basis. The growing science of operations research, which relies heavily on the methods that have proved so successful in the physical sciences, is one aspect of these efforts.

This report summarizes results of bench-scale metallurgical studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines on three composite samples representative of the low-grade manganese ores purchased by the General Services Administration (GSA) and stockpiled at Deming, N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. Bench-scale flotation tests at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center showed that all three composites could be beneficiated by flotation to recover 88 to 90 percent of the manganese in concentrates that assayed from 38.5 to 39.0 percent Mn, 10 to 12 percent insoluble, 5 percent CaO, 3 to 5 percent Fe, and 1.3 to 1.7 percent combined Pb plus Zn plus Cu, Sintering studies indicated that specification-grade material could be made from these concentrates by sintering above 1,000° C, and adding either sodium or calcium chloride to the charge to insure removal of enough lead and zinc to meet the specifications.

The conventional low temperature process for extracting' helium from natural gas involves liquefying the whole gas stream in order to remove the relatively small fraction of helium. A process based on the selective diffusion of helium through a semi-permeable barrier is, in principle, more economical and flexible, particularly for the treatment of small re-serves and low concentrations. The well-known permeability of glass to helium offers the possibility of such a diffusion process and McAfee of the Bell telephone Laboratories showed in 1958 that practical separations could be achieved by passing natural gas over bundles of fine capillary glass tubing. Developmental studies have been carried out involving larger units and more extended field tests than those of McAfee. Fine capillary tubing of Pyrex glass 0.0035 in. diameter was prepared by drawing ordinary 6 mm. laboratory tubing in a furnace. This Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by the need forr a stable anode for electrowinning metals, particularly zinc and copper, from acid solutions. The polarization behavior of Pb-Ag (1 pct Ag) anodes in H2SO4 and fluoride solutions was determined as the first step in the development of such an anode. A Luggin capillary, dc power supply, high-impedance voltmeter, and other equipment standard to an electrochemical laboratory were used in this study. It was determined that during polarization, a relatively hard, stable coating of Pb02 was formed on the surface of the lead-silver anode and the rate of formation of this coating was considerably enhanced by the presence of fluoride ions in solution. Subsequent investigations at the Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center resulted in the development of a Pb02-coated titanium (Pb02-Ti) anode. Results of this effort were presented in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 8111. Additional data resulting from extensive testing of the Pb02-Ti anodes, as well as process improvements and innovations, are included in this report. The anodes were considered generally unsatisfactory for zinc electrowinning because of lower conductivity, higher oxygen overvoltages, and shorter in-cell life as compared with the Pb-Ag anodes now being used in industry. However, the PbO2-Ti anodes were used successfully to oxidize waste chromium solutions and to electrowin copper.

In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. The cut-off/cut-over grade policy produced caters for multiple processing streams and stockpiles.Finally we demonstrate the quality of the algorithm by comparing some results with a well-known mathematical solution.CITATION:Myburgh, C A, Deb, K and Craig, S, 2014. An overview of hydrate properties is given, with emphasis on unusual deviations from ice, the most common solid water form. Reliable sample preparation and reproduction of in situ hydrates provide the foundation for all hydrate science and engineering. Relations are given to connect the three domains in the title: (1) micro-scopic properties measured with Raman, NMR, and diffraction spectroscopy, (2) meso-scopic properties measured with single crystals, and (3) macro-scopic properties measured with pressures, temperatures, volumes, etc. A principal illustration relates micro-scopic and macro-scopic domains. Experiments provides the basis for improving statistical thermodynamics model for these compounds. To date, this model is one of the most commonly used industrial statistical thermodynamics applications, based upon the classical model of van der Waals and Platteeuw (1959). Microscopic measurements and simulations indicate model assumption improvements, resulting in the next generation of the statistical thermodynamics for improved macroscopic property prediction.

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. Early solvent extraction circuits in the uranium industry utilized bona fide kerosenes as diluents for extractant chemicals. These kerosenes were used successfully in the uranium industry; however, at least one plant was destroyed by fire resulting from the use of a low flash point kerosene. Although the term "kerosene" is used throughout the solvent extraction industry, the authors have been unable to find any use of kerosene in copper solvent extraction circuits. A term that is occasionally used with reference to diluents is "metallurgical kerosene." Such a term is unrecognizable in the petroleum industry. Kerosene [or kerosine] is a flammable hydrocarbon mixture that is less volatile than gasoline. It is produced for combustion purposes and may have variable compositions of organic compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkines, and aromatics. Diluents are constant composition hydrocarbon mixtures developed specifically for use in solvent extraction processes. These products usually have much lower vapor pressures and higher flash points than kerosene. In solvent extraction systems, they typically comprise 70 to 95 v/o percent of the circuit organic. The primary purpose of the diluent is to adjust the extractant concentration to the working range of the operation. The diluent and extractant must be completely soluble or miscible with each other. Secondary diluent effects are to promote transfer kinetics, optimize phase disengagement, and minimize both organic in aqueous and aqueous in organic entrainment.

The efficiency of the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges relies on a fully informed market: shareholders and investors are fully and transparently informed of all material information relating to the shares. These principles of transparency and materiality are similarly core to the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code). The JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) Code also includes a principle of competency to ensure that the person providing the material information for public disclosure is suitably qualified and experienced.Since its inclusion into the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) Listing rules in 1989, the JORC Code has continually improved and evolved in attempts to meet the market’s need for competent, transparent and informed disclosure. The quality and effectiveness of Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is under constant challenge: some practitioners argue there is insufficient regulation, while others argue the need for greater self-regulation.This paper contributes to that discourse by exploring how well the Reporting expectations are met, and, whether Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code has a material impact on share-price movement.CITATION:Sterk, R and Coombes, J, 2017. "Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) testing is commonly used to verify the integrity, quality and ultimately the acceptability of the concrete in structural elements such as drilled shaft foundations, secant pile cutoff walls, and secant/tangent pile earth retention structures. Besides concrete quality, many factors can impact CSL test results (e.g. laitance, air temperature, access tube spacing, access tube debonding, etc.). Effective use of CSL testing requires fully informed qualified practitioners capable of distinguishing between abnormal readings unrelated to deficiencies in the drilled shaft concrete and similar readings indicating the presence or possible presence of drilled shaft defects. Based on data and experience gathered from CSL testing of thousands of drilled shafts across North America, this paper discusses such factors and other information useful when evaluating CSL test results, and provides practical recommendations intended to reduce the potential for incorrect test data interpretation. The CSL testing industry is lacking in a clear, universally accepted guideline for the interpretation of CSL data and acceptance criteria of these concrete elements. This paper proposes terminology and a streamlined process for use when atypical results are obtained. The proposed terminology and method are intended to simplify and expedite the submittal review and approval process. Because construction activities for these elements are often on the project’s critical path, the benefits obtained in terms of project savings and reducing costly delays areundoubtedly valuable.1. INTRODUCTIONCSL testing is used extensively throughout the world on many projects to verify the quality of concrete used for drilled shaft foundations, secant pile walls, diaphragm walls, etc. In this paper, these structural elements will be referred to as “drilled shafts,” as they are the most common subject of this test method. In the United States, CSL testing is frequently specified by state and regional transportation agencies, ports, design builders, and others. Although other methods are currently available such as Gamma-Gamma Logging and low-strain Impulse-Echo or Sonic-Echo testing, and new methods are under development such as the Thermal Integrity testing, CSL testing is likely to remain one of the most useful tools for evaluating the acceptability of constructed drilled shafts for quite some time. The popularity of CSL as a testing method can be attributed to two main factors: 1) there is no depth limitation to the method and 2) the apparent ease of interpreting the results. A third advantage of CSL testing is that, when correctly interpreted and with adequate test coverage, it is unlikely to misrepresent a defective profile resulting in acceptance of a defective or inadequate drilled shaft. In other words, CSL testing is very likely to underestimate concrete quality/drilled shaft acceptability within its area of coverage."

"In order to liberate gold from refractory gold ores and concentrates it is generally necessary to oxidise the surrounding sulphide minerals, typically pyrite and arsenopyrite. Traditional methods of oxidation include pressure leaching, roasting and bacterial oxidation. In recent years, bacterial and pressure oxidation have found increasing favour, although these methods are by no means completely satisfactory and each is subject to particular disadvantages.A novel process has been developed as an alternative to the traditional methods whereby electro-generated ferrate(VI) ions in alkaline solution are used to oxidise a pyrite concentrate. This process has been observed to proceed fairly rapidly and could prove to be a more economically viable process, as well as being more environmentally acceptable. As an added benefit, operating in an alkaline environment is advantageous for downstream cyanidation processes.Ferrate(VI) is a relatively unknown species, due mainly to its instability in acidic solutions. However, in alkaline solution it has been observed to be sufficiently stable for use as an oxidant when used under favourable conditions. Ferrate(VI) is most conveniently manufactured electrolytically via the dissolution of high-carbon anodes in strongly alkaline solutions. Some literature has been published on the electrolytic generation of ferrate(VI) and relatively high efficiencies have been observed by both the authors and other researchers.This study utilises both electrochemical techniques and leaching experiments to examine the kinetics of the oxidation of pyrite by ferrate(VI), which is produced electrolytically. Cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk voltammetry and potential step experiments have been used to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation process."
