This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta's Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine's life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta's Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. P. T. Freeport Indonesia (PI) in conjunction with Crescent Technology Inc. has developed a method to predict the metallurgical performance of ores blends based on the behavior of their component ores. The question addressed in this paper is whether ores treated individually could be extrapolated to predict the behavior of a blend of ores. The work further investigates the use of modal analysis to establish individual mineral flotation kinetics in each of the ore zones. This information would lead to the prediction of grade-recovery curves of ores made up of those minerals. Nine samples of ore, representing various zones of FI's Grasberg ore deposit were tested metallurgically and examined microscopically. The same testwork was performed on blends depicting the 1994 mill quarterly feed. Flotation kinetics of the individual ores were then "mathematically" blended and compared to the results obtained from the quarterlies. The calculated kinetics of the actual blends of ore received by the mill were fed to the simulation program and compared to the actual mill performance.

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. "In this study, H2SO4 and HCl leaching behaviour of an ore sample containing 1.87% of Ni, obtained from the Karaçam (Eskisehir-Turkey) lateritic deposit that started operation recently was investigated. Acid concentration, temperature and reaction time were investigated as variables by comparative leaching tests and the optimum leaching conditions were selected on teh basis of Ni, Fe, Co and Mg behaviour. For H2SO4 leaching, optimum leach parameters were 95°C, a 12 normal H2SO4 concentration and 90 minutes of reaction time, and under these conditions Ni and Fe dissolutions were 97.6% and 95.4% respectively. On the other hand, 70°C, an 8 normal HCl concentration and a reaction time of 90 minutes were found to be the optimum parameters for HCl leaching, and Ni and Fe dissolutions found were 97.1% and 97.8%, respectively.INTRODUCTION Today, nickel and various nickel compounds are obtained from sulphide and lateritic nickel ores (Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002). Even though about 72% of the world's nickel reserves constitute lateritic ores, only about 42% of nickel is produced from these ores. The decrease in production from sulphide deposits, on the other hand, and increases in the use of nickel in the iron and steel, and battery production sectors, and especially the production of nickel cast irons in recent years, have accelerated the importance of making use of lateritic deposits (Luo et. al., 2010; Chang et. al., 2010). In the beneficiation of sulphide nickel ores, mostly pyrometallurgical methods are used. On the other hand, about 39% of lateritic ores are beneficiated by pyrometallurgical, and 61% are beneficiated by hydrometallurgical methods (USGS, 2009). In laterite beneficiation, the ore properties are of significance; that is to say, limonitic ores are eneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or via the Caron process, nontronitic ores are beneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or heat treatment (smelting), and ores containing serpentine by pyrometallurgical methods (Berezowsky, 2004; McDonald & Whittington, 2008a; Dreisinger et. al., 2015)."

The overall kinetics of oxidation of single partic1es of chalcopyrite have been studied for temperatures up to 1273 K. The experiments were conducted in a stationary bed reactor using a non-isothermal technique. Any mass and heat transfer effects on the kinetics of oxidation were eliminated by using a high-enough gas flowrate. Up to temperatures of 873 K, pore-bl1ocking kinetics were applicable, whereas above 873 K, power-law kinetics gave a satisfactory fit of the data. The activation energy was 215 kJ/mol below 754 Kand 23.7 kJ/mol above 1,060 K. Predominance area diagrams were constructed at various temperatures and used in conjunction with X-ray analyses of partially oxidized samples to determine the intermediate phases formed during the reaction. The analysi1s also provides a justification for the kinetic models used. The results indicate that the reaction rate is first order with respect to oxygen concentration and inversely proportional to the square of the particle size throughout the ranges of temperature studied.

Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals that are locked up in a micacious solid matrix or associated with carbonate, sulfide and phosphate minerals. Several researchers have reported that the recovery of copper from CRO material by an acid-leaching process is not economically feasible, due to the presence of excess gangue-acid-consuming minerals such as calcites, dolomite, asbolane and iron oxides. Since the proportion of acid-insoluble copper (CuS) is about 28% of total copper and total free sulfur is extremely small, sulfide flotation was considered unfavorable. Consequently, hundreds of millions of tons of CRO material have been stockpiled specifically at the Nchanga Mine of Zambia. In terms of copper distribution in CRO material, a significant portion of total copper exists as carbonates (39%) and oxides (17%), while 28% of the copper is acidinsoluble (CuS). The rest of the copper is in the form of carbonates (16%) and (hydr) oxides (17%). This means that only about 72% of total copper is recoverable through the non-oxidative acid-leaching process. In this study, batch leach tests were performed on CRO solids (d95 = 95%) to establish the gangue acid consumption values at different feed pH values and to evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese and iron within the CRO material. Subsequently, continuous leach tests were performed on CRO solids (106 um, 80% passing) using optimum leach conditions derived from batch tests. This paper aims to show that sustainable copper recovery can be achieved by selecting leaching conditions whereby gangue acid consumption (GAC) values become significantly small and the final concentration of manganese and iron in the leach solution are appreciably low.

The ever-increasing need to guard against stream pollution has intensified interest in the problems of handling and disposing of flotation tailing. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of using crushed washery refuse to adsorb the free water in thickened flotation tailings on a bench scale and then in a pilot plant because the conventional methods of disposing of coal flotation tailings--impounding them or filtering them so they are dry enough to be conveyed to the refuse dump--are sometimes either impractical because of space limitations or costly because of low filter capacity. Most of the refuse samples tested were of similar mineralogical composition and exhibited similar water retention capability. The amount of crushed refuse required to adsorb the water in a particular tailing was influenced greatly by the fineness of the solids in the tailing and hence the percentage of solids to which it could be thickened. The ratio of crushed refuse to tailing solids required to provide a mixture dry enough to be carried on an inclined conveyor belt varied from 2.4 to 6.4. Several chemical agents that were tested were very effective in turning the free water in tailings into a stable gel. Fly ash also was very effective in adsorbing water.

A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive, and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must" be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen, words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed:' "The superla¬tive is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word `very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as 'the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district', in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a `stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where .10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. Narrow vein mining, as most types of mining, faces important geotechnical challenges. The specificity of geotechnical challenges in narrow vein mines stems from the nature of the deposits, which are often inclined, discordant and found within fractured rock or faults or in shear zones within country rock. This complicates the construction of representative geomechanical models and limits the applicability of several engineering design tools. Furthermore, in certain cases, the severity of encountered geotechnical problems is considerably greater in narrow vein than in wider orebodies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and other challenges in narrow vein mines with a focus on how these are currently addressed. Of particular concern is the use of manual labour working close to the mining face where there is greater exposure to geomechanical hazards. This review concludes with a particular emphasis on understanding the limitations of commonly used engineering tools and techniques to address geotechnical problems in narrow vein mines.CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J, 2012. The intrinsic value of iron ore depends on its physical and chemical characteristics. For example, silica and alumina are unwanted elements, downgrading iron grade and adversely affecting high temperature processing, attracting penalties in smelter contracts. For this reason, an informed knowledge of processing characteristics and product quality of the ore is valuable and cost effective during mine planning and processing.Ore variability is a significant factor that affects metallurgical behaviour and efficiency of ore processing equipment. Ore of sufficient chemical and physical quality needs to be modelled, mined, processed and usually blended. Feed and product assays are commonly used to assess potential ore upgradability. However, assays alone cannot be all informative of actual processing response given the variability of the physical properties of the ore.This study investigates the potential benefit of implementing a geometallurgical approach during the commissioning stage of the Kings deposit, part of the Solomon Iron Ore project in Western Australia. Kings drill hole database information, ie geological, textural and geochemical data, together with the results of metallurgical test work were used for geometallurgical analysis and modelling. Three main ore types were identified at Kings, namely channel iron deposit (CID), bedded iron deposits (BID) and Detrital Iron Deposit (DID). Additional classifications were utilised to better characterise these units in terms of their physical properties.Bulk sampling for each ore type was carried out across the deposit for metallurgical testing. Multivariate statistical models were developed for prediction of product quality for each geometallurgical unit. A new approach for modelling yield based on ore upgrade factors is introduced. "The QR gold deposit lies in the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia. The deposit was discovered in 1977 and since then a mineable reserve of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au has' been outlined in three separate zones. Soil sampling of glacial tills followed by diamond drilling of favourable host rocks proved to be key exploration techniques.The deposit is situated in the southern Quesnel terrane along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt which here comprises a sequence of basic and intermediate volcanics and a series of stocks of alkaline affinity; generally diorite, monzonite and syenite. Hornfels and epidote-rich ferromagnesian exoskarn and sulphide-rich mantos have developed in a metamorphic aureole formed around a central diorite stock. Gold-rich zones lie along the outer periphery of the aureole where bodies of gold-bearing epidote-rich skarn and auriferous mantos rich in epidote and pyrite have formed in beds of calcareous tuffite lying at the top of a thick basaltic sequence. The deposit is regarded as' a subclass of gold skarn deposits. Diagnostic features are its association with alkalic intrusive rocks in a subvolcanic setting and the presence of oxidized, epidote-rich mineral assemblages.IntroductionThe QR gold deposit lies within the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia, 58 km southeast of Quesnel. The deposit, owned by Kinross Gold, was discovered during a regional reconnaissance program by Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited and Newconex Canadian Exploration in 1977. Considerable exploration and development has been done since that time. Mineable reserves of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au have been outlined to date in three zones."

Several electric arc furnace (EAF) shops have increased the zinc and lead grades of EAF dust by reinjecting it into their furnaces; however, the kinetics of this operation are poorly understood. To understand the kinetics, EAF dust was injected into 70 kg heats of iron or steel in an induction furnace. Supplemental additions of carbon and oxygen to overcome the heat load on the system were also investigated. In all cases, the dust was chemically transformed, and the zinc content increased from 16% Zn to 60 - 80% Zn. About 50% of the zinc in the EAF dust dissolved in the iron or steel. The zinc oxide in the dust is thought to be reduced by carbon and the zinc vapour subsequently dissolved in the iron. A kinetic model for the dissolution process is proposed, and the implications for EAF dust recycling are discussed.

"The CONTOP® smelting cyclone is a water-cooled, upright, high-intensity smelting reactor. The technology for the reactor was initially developed and brought into industrial-scale operation in the area of non-ferrous metallurgy. The two largest smelting cyclones were built with a capacity of 32 tons per hour of copper concentrate mix.The newest industrial CONTOP® plant treats up to five tons per hour of zinc-bearing residues including EAF dust. The highly concentrated zinc-lead oxide produced is sold to the zinc industry. The slag fulfills the leaching criteria and is used in waterway construction. The heat transferred to the cyclone cooling system and the off-gas boiler produces steam from which power is generated in a turbine.V AI has erected a new CONTOP® demonstration plant at MEFOS, Lulea, Sweden. A zinc volatilization rate of 90% was achieved during hot commissioning with Swedish EAF dust.Treatment costs in the range of 85 to 100 EUR per ton were estimated in a feasibility study on the treatment of 73,000 and 57 ,000 tons EAF dust for a group of steelmaking mills in Southern Europe."

A laboratory study was conducted on continuous precipitation of copper, cadmium, mercury and arsenic using thiourea, thioacetamide, sodium sulfide and ammonium sulfide as precipitating agents. Depending on the experimental conditions the metals precipitate with the sulfide donors at different orders and rates. These differences were employed as a basis of several techniques for continuous separation of copper and arsenic, cadmium and arsenic, mercury and copper, and copper, mercury and arsenic. The separation of the metals from industrial waste solutions was also studied. The precipitates obtained were inspected using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, atomic absorption spectrometer and plasma particle counter.

The progressive depletion of ore available at shallow depths in several underground mines around the world means that underground mining operations would increasingly be carried out at greater depths and therefore at higher temperatures. However, our understanding of the effect of hot temperatures on the response (mechanical, economical, environmental) of cemented paste backfill (CPB) is still limited. Hence, an extensive laboratory investigation was conducted to study the performance of young and aged CPB, in response to deep mine temperatures. Several CPB samples with different compositions, cured at different temperatures (20 to 50°C) and different times (7 to 160 days) were tested regarding their mechanical properties, economical performance (binder consumption) and microstructural properties. The results show that hot temperatures significantly affect the performance properties of CPB at young and advanced ages. An increase in the curing temperature leads to a considerable improvement of the rate of gain of CPB strength and also to a significant increase of the strength of CPBs studied. CBP samples cured at hot temperatures show lower binder consumption and finer pore structure. Results of this study could serve as background information for the development of optimal mine backfill design procedures.

The paper presents the modeling and analysis of oxidation of pyrite copper-zinc ore samples from the Letnee, Yaman-Kasy and Valentorskoye deposits. It is found, that the oxidized samples contain copper and zinc sulfates that are leached under the sample and water contact. It is shown, that sulfide floatability is decreased by the longer-term oxidation.We advise to improve nonferrous metals recovery by joint leaching and ultrasonic treatment of oxidized compounds. Study of the geotechnological processes of non-ferrous metal extraction, on the basis of two copper-zinc ore deposits shows, that heap leaching is of little use for the ores of the Letnee deposit. Leaching results for the Yaman-Kasy ore showed more promise.
