A technology for producing liquid fuels from oil shale at prices competitive with crude oil prices is a necessary but not exclusive prerequisite for the development of a shale oil industry. Many other factors will affect the timing and the rate at which oil shale is commercially developed. Among the more important are: governmental policy concerning oil shale and oil resources (including the Outer Continental Shelf) that are under Federal control; oil import policy; Federal taxation of shale oil production including depletion allowances; regulatory practices; competition from other energy sources, both synthetic and natural; Federal treatment of factors affecting competing energy resources; and present legislation under which the public resources must be leased. Significant changes in any of the foregoing factors could have a controlling effect on the timing and rate of oil shale development. The effect of changes in each of these factors is evaluated.

The environmental and nutritional characteristics necessary for maximum copper extraction from a low-grade ore by Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans have been explored as have many of the limiting parameters. Criteria considered were oxygen consumption, copper extracted, soluble copper concentration, temperature, pH, particle size, nutrients, and other inorganic salt concentrations. A set of environmental and nutritional conditions were developed for E. ferrooxidans Which supported cell reproduction and maximum microbial oxidation of a low-grade copper sulfide ore. Percolator tests conducted under these optimum conditions resulted in an 18 percent increase in the quantity of copper microbially extracted over that extracted under conditions considered to be standard. Manometric tests determined those extremes of environmental conditions and nutritional factors Which were detrimental to the extraction of copper by E. ferrooxidans.

Controlled and uniform distribution of the leach solution to a heap is of primary importance to achieving the desired rate of metal recovery and PLS grade from the heap. The step used to engineer the irrigation system are the same whether drips, wobblers or sprinklers are to be used. The mining rate, leach cycle time and heap height influence the heap cell size which along with the irrigation method selected controls the design of the irrigation system. The steps in the design procedure are explained as are the advantages and disadvantages of each irrigation method.

This chapter is concerned with the uses, geology, exploration, evaluation, preparation for markets, and future of 90thorium and 39yttrium, along with 14 rare-earth elements. The rare-earth metals or lanthanides were divided into three categories by Berzelius. The cerium subgroup is comprised of 57lanthanum, 58cerium, 59praseodymium, 60neodymium, and 62samarium. 61Promethium does not occur naturally. The terbium subgroup includes 63europium, 64gadolinium, and 65terbium. The remaining lanthanides are placed in the yttrium subgroup. Strictly speaking, yttrium is not a rare earth. Because the properties of yttrium resemble those of heavy rare earths, its name has been used as a designating adjective. The yttrium subgroup includes 66dysprosium, 67holmium, 68erbium, 69thulium, 70ytterbium, and 67lutetium. Rare-earth elements, especially those of the same subgroup, tend to occur together rather than in discrete minerals.

The accurate estimation of ore reserves along with capital and operating costs are two key components to the successful outcome of any feasibility study. In recent years, there have been many project failures caused by improper estimation of ore reserves. The accurate estimation of ore reserves for any deposit relies heavily on understanding its geology and underlying assumptions unique to the estimation techniques being used. The assumptions unique to commonly used traditional and geostatistical reserve estimation technique will be reviewed. The shortcomings of the estimation techniques and their possible impact on a given project's economic outcome will be discussed. The latest developments in geostatistics in overcoming existing reserve estimation problems will be presented.

"Shaft sinking for exploitation of the deep potash beds in Saskatchewan involved great difficulties from the very first because of the need to exclude from the shaft the high-pressure water encountered in the overburden. Control of the troublesome Blairmore quicksands was achieved relatively quickly by use of the freezing method and by lining with cast iron tubbing. The unsolved problem remained, however, of sealing the water-bearing Devonian where the formations had extremely low permeability and were thus hard to grout. Long experience in German potash mines had shown that the permanency of the whole mine would be seriously endangered if large amounts of unsaturated salt water were allowed to flow in from the shaft wall and merely removed by pumping. The prevention of water movement and the resulting dissolution of salt in the overburden were known to be most important. In the Alwinsal shaft, water flow from the Devonian has been prevented by the use of a steel and concrete sandwich lining similar in principle to a kind of lining introduced a few years earlier, and for another reason, in German coal shafts. As its installation is neither more expensive nor more time consuming than that of cast iron tubbing lining, this same lining was also chosen as protection against the Blairmore quicksands. The great advantage of the steel lining, in addition to its relatively high strength, is the fact that it is possible to make the joints of the individual segments absolutely and permanently water-tight by means of tested welds. The virtual dryness of the Alwinsal shaft will also result in lower costs because significant corrosion of all its steel installations, including skips, cage and ropes, will be prevented."

The adsorption of heterocyclic collectors such 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO), 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and their derivatives on pyrite form a basis in understanding the flotation reactivity that may be applicable in a wide range of sulphide minerals. This study uses a computational and experimental approach to determine the heat of adsorption of MBT, MBO, MBI and modified MBT collectors onto pyrite surfaces. Computational calculations found that the adsorption energies were in the order: MBO > MBI > MBT. The heterocyclic collectors were adsorbed in their thiolate form on the surface. In the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the MBT adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur atom, while MBO and MBI adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur and N atoms onto the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted, where the MBT exocyclic sulphur atom bridged on the 5- coordinated Fe and surface 2-coordinated sulphur atoms, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. In the case of MBO and MBI, dissociation of the exocyclic sulphur atom from the collector occurred with subsequent interaction with the surface 5-cordinated Fe and 2-coordinated S atoms. This resulted in the collector carbon atom adsorbing on the surface 2-coordinated S atom, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The adsorption of the modified MBT was found to be more exothermic than the MBT, which showed that introduction of a –CS2 group on the exocyclic sulphur atom improved the affinity of MBT on the surface, and was thus a better flotation collector. The computational results were supported by experimental enthalpy of adsorption measurements and microflotation tests. The chemistry of the heterocyclic thioamides is complicated by the fact that they can exist in a number of tautomeric and ionic forms at different pH’s. This is discussed in relation to the flotation and calorimetric data.

The efficiency of the electrowinning process of zinc depends on the performance of oxygen evolution reaction, anode quality and corrosion resistance of lead anodes. Original surfaces of rolled commercial lead-silver anodes were examined using conventional polarisation methods in acid zinc sulfate electrolyte with manganese sulphate at 38 °C. The self-discharge method (potential decay) following 5 h polarisation at 50 mA cm-2 was considered to evaluate electrochemical activity, oxygen overpotential and anode stability. The influence of silver content is compared to that of the microstructure, the fabrication process and the composition of the corrosion products. Polished anode samples have also been examined for microstructural and corrosion performance studies. The experiments show that the duration of the plateau at 1600 mV versus SHE, the potential level (active corrosion state/stationary state) and the rate AEco/At during the decay could be a good indicator to compare the corrosion rates of the anodes in industrial zinc electrolytes.

Project Environmental Approval is a multi-faceted issue. From a mining perspective, it is a costly item because of avoidable time delay. The government perspective is that the approvals are a necessary part of meeting departmental requirements to ensure that the wellbeing of other uses of the environment is maintained. This paper outlines some of the problems inherent in the environmental approvals process and makes recommendations to both the proponent and government about improving the efficiency of the process.

Increased safety requirements, higher operational costs, greater environmental restrictions, and new competitive processing techniques are the challenges smelter operators must confront in order to remain economically viable. In converting furnaces which have tuyeres such as the Noranda Reactor and the Teniente, Peirce Smith and Hoboken converters, efficient tuyere line management is critical to optimizing blowing rates, increasing refractory life, and improving safety. This paper will describe recent improvements made to equipment used for tuyere punching, tuyere silencing, tuyere pyrometry and refractory drilling of tuyeres and how the proper application of the equipment can lead to operational and safety improvements.

Four samples of manganese-bearing material from the Aroostook County, Maine, deposits were tested at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., to determine their amenability to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods. The samples represented material from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit, the Dudley farm, and the Burnham farm and contained 11 to 14 percent manganese. None of the tests produced appreciably enriched concentrates suitable for further treatment for the production of ferromanganese. The intimate association of the manganese minerals with iron and siliceous minerals requires extremely fine grinding to liberate the manganese minerals in these ores and prevents efficient concentration by physical means.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. "The aim of this paper is to enhance the understanding of the nature of mining input technologies in the South African mining industry. In the context of this research, mining inputs refer to input technology into the activities in mining engineering fields, which include mining-related production activities, rock engineering, mine ventilation, and mine transportation (handling of personnel, material, broken rock, and pumping). Input technologies in supporting fields such as geology, other engineering disciplines, human resource, procurement, finance, as well as downstream fields that include metallurgy, and marketing of minerals, were disregarded.The mining input technologies were divided into 12 nodes, and data from a sample of 150 first-tier mining suppliers was analysed. It was found that, in general, there is a high local content in mining input technologies, particularly as regards technical support services, artefacts, and machine technologies. This points to the presence of mining-induced backward linkages in the South African mining industry. The majority (83%) of companies that provide input technologies into mining are located in Gauteng Province, and relatively few are found in provinces where mining is concentrated such as North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State. IntroductionSouth Africa is well endowed with minerals, with more than fifty different minerals being mined throughout the country. For this and other reasons, mining is one of the crucial pillars in the South African economy and its importance is well documented (Robinson and von Below, 1990; Creamer, 2010; Department of Mineral Resources, 2015). In 2013, South Africa was the largest global producer of chromium, ferrochrome, platinum group metals (PGMs), and vermiculite and the second largest global producer of antimony, manganese, titanium, and vanadium (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2014). In 2013, the mining industry contributed 6.7% to South Africa’s GDP and was the fifth largest sector in the economy, as shown in Figure 1."

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. The physical and mechanical properties of coal play a important role in the planing and design of coal mines. However, due to the complexity conditions in situ and the influence of unknown factors, it is hard for people to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal directly. In this research, uniaxial compressive stress was used to change the attribute of coal samples, and the ultrasonic measure technique was used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal. The results of laboratory test showed that there was a strong relation between uniaxial stress and velocity of ultrasonic wave. Sensitivity analysis with numerical simulation was used to define the relation between the physical-mechanical parameters of coal and ultrasonoc wave. With the dynamic analysis module of FLAC, three elastic and plastic models were built to model the coal samples. The modeling parameters were changed pro rata, and the correlation of coal and ultrasonic wave properties were summarized and presented. The result from this research will be base for further analysis of caving behavior of coal.

"In this paper, a relationship between dependant parameters and the crown pillar thickness is first introduced. This relationship defines geotechnical problems caused by thin pillars and economic considerations created by pillars that are thicker than the optimum size. For this purpose, a dimensional analysis as an effective physico-mathematical tool was used. This technique restructures the original dimensional variables of a problem into a set of dimensionless products using the constraints imposed upon them by their dimensions. A model is hence introduced that calculates the optimum pillar thickness. The relationship introduced here and the method applied can be used by mining engineers in all situations where a combined open-pit and block caving method is deemed to be the most appropriate mining method.INTRODUCTIONMany deposits can be mined entirely with the open-pit method; others must be worked underground from the very beginning. In addition, there are the near-surface deposits with considerable vertical extent. Although they are initially exploited by the open pit method, there is often a ""transition depth"" where decision has to be made about changing to underground methods.Some of the biggest open-pit mines worldwide will reach their final pit limits in the next 10 to 15 years. Furthermore, there are many mines planning to change from open-pit to underground mining due to increasing extraction depths and environmental requirements. In this way, it is likely that block and/or panel caving will enable the operations to continue achieving a high production rate at low costs as an underground method (Bakhtavar et al., 2009).In these cases, it is often necessary to consider a crown pillar beneath the transition depth (open-pit floor) before starting an underground caving stope method (Figure 1).There are generally two kinds of crown pillar: a ""surface crown pillar"" and ""crown pillar between open-pit and underground mining."" In general, they both play the similar role in mining. Since the primary purpose of a surface crown pillar is to protect surface land users, the mine, and those working in it from inflows of water, soil, and rock; it is vital that the surface crown pillars remain stable throughout their life. When a crown pillar could potentially remain between open-pit and underground mining it is specially proposed to prevent water entering from the open-pit floor into the stope, as well as to reduce open-pit wall and floor caving."

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. Contrary to most copper sulfide minerals where recovery is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings. It is this complexity that facilitated the necessity for a geometallurgical investigation of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect mineralogy and/or mineralogical attributes (i.e. morphology, angularity, liberation, size) have on the recovery of molybdenite in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products produced by Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. All samples were analyzed using normal polarized reflective light, Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and X-ray diffractometery (XRD) techniques. The results of this investigation revealed the presence of two distinctly different types of molybdenite, which have been identified as the two polytypes of molybdenite, i.e. hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins that are located in the core of the Bingham Canyon deposit. The 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, “ball”-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Concerning their metallurgical behavior each type exhibits unique metallurgical properties that are consistent with those reported in the published literature. For instance, the 2H polytype is easily ground and kinetically “faster” floating with surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions common to most copper concentration operations. In contrast, the 3R polytype is difficult to grind and kinetically “slower” floating with surface attributes that less amenable to recovery under normal operating conditions. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to the normal operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenum. Finally, a preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry Cu and Mo deposits indicates that a positive correlation may exist between the total economic metal budget and the polytype content. For example, higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in Au-enriched porphyries versus Mo-enriched porphyries. This observation may also serve to help explain why it is easier to obtain high rates of recovery in Mo ± W-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R-polytype. Consequently, the potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present, as well as its impact on the economics (exploration) and/or on the processing circuit (plant design) could exist. In conclusion, this investigation highlights the necessity of understanding the mineralogical properties or characteristics of molybdenite and/or other economic mineral(s), as these can and will have a direct impact upon the performance and plant optimization."
