The sustainable management of surface water associated with coal mining and coal seam gas projects is a considerable factor affecting the global competitiveness of these resource companies operating in Australia. Management of surface water can be costly, but effective water management and hence environmental stewardship enhances corporate social responsibility and the social license to operate. The surface water issues for the two industries are comparable, yet there is currently a lack of alignment between how Queensland, where the majority of AustraliaÆs coal seam gas projects are located, manages and regulates water on coal mine projects and coal seam gas projects.This paper provides a high level comparison of Queensland legislation and highlights the lack of alignment of this legislation regarding surface water management in these two industries. Through a case study, it looks at the surface water management process at a coal mine site based on the current legislation and principals of surface water management. QueenslandÆs lack of alignment in legislation regarding surface water management in these industries is understandable given the different development paths and time scales of the two industries. The coal mining industry has developed over a long period of time and the legislation has progressed in parallel, whereas, the coal seam gas industry is relatively new in Australia and the legislation has had to advance quickly. The lack of alignment between management of surface water for the two industries creates confusion among stakeholders and this adds complexity and additional transaction costs during the exploration, permitting and operational phases of projects, including landowners who may be affected.CITATION:Bennett, C, Coffison, E and Gibbs, M, 2013. The Otjikoto Mine, owned at 90% by B2Gold Corporation, is located 300 km north of Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek. The reserves from the open pit mine, estimated at 25.9 million tons with an average grade of 1.28 g/t Au, contain gangue minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite, and have an estimated 10 year mine life. The feasibility study included an optimisation of gold leaching using CSTR for the original design. The results of the test work were used to establish the design criteria. Gravity tails from three composites (drill cores), representing the major ore types, were used. The XR3 sample (gravity tails) contained 0.32 g/t Au, while the XR2 and XR1 gravity tails samples (used for variability) contained, respectively, 0.30 g/t Au, and 0.47 g/t Au. The optimum leaching conditions were: a pre-treatment of 7 h at pH 10.5 with 100 g/t lead nitrate, DO > 5 ppm followed by cyanidation at 300 ppm NaCN, pH 10.0, DO > 5 ppm for 48 h. The gold extraction was 91.5% (97.2% overall extraction gravity/leach) and the cyanide addition was 0.57 kg/t NaCN. Increasing the DO to 16 ppm did not show any economic benefits. No pre-treatment or a 4-h pre-treatment reduced the gold leaching kinetics. The XR2 and XR1 gravity tails samples had gold extractions of 92.9% and 92.3%, respectively. At the plant scale, an 11 h pre-treatment is used followed by 42 h cyanidation with 250 ppm NaCN and an average DO of 8 ppm and 230 g/t lead nitrate in 2016. The cyanide addition was 0.49 kg/t NaCN. The commercial operation started on February 28th, 2015. The overall gold recovery and production were 98.4% and 145,696 ounces for 2015 and 98.1% and 166,286 ounces for 2016. It was found that retention times, gold content of leach residues and cyanide addition are comparable for the lab and the plant. Details of the Otjikoto process flowsheet are discussed in this paper along with the results of the lab leach optimisation test program and the plant leach circuit performance and improvements.

Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations. "Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. The machining of thin wall parts, often used in the aeronautical industry still creates a number of problems, including panel deformation. Quality and productivity are often affected. This study seeks to determine the optimal conditions for cutting in order to guarantee a competitive fabrication of parts while still maintaining quality and delivery deadlines. The studied model (Spar) is a typical structural part used in the assembly of airplane wings. The main objective of this study was to improve two performance aspects: surface quality finish (quality criteria) and the rate of cutting by stock removal (economic criteria). To achieve this objective, we used an evaluation process of the geometrical error issuing from the machine-tool. We also determined the stability zones of the machine-tool's dynamic system. Finally, a series of high-speed machining tests (finishing cuts) were conducted using an experimental structured approach (16 000 - 24 000 rpm). Profile measures of surface roughness and cycle times registered during trials allowed us to establish optimal cutting conditions. Surface roughness improved as well as cutting by stock removal. Four parameters were taken into consideration: axial depth of cut, chip load, spindle speed, and cutting fluid. Finally, the influence of the type of cutting fluid was evaluated to show that it did not significantly affect machining results.

A 1989 FIPR characterization study of the future phosphate resources in Florida showed that MgO would be a problem with both the pebble and concentrate as phosphate mining moves deeper. Since the ratio of concentrate to pebble will become higher and higher in the future, reducing Mg content in the concentrate by a small margin would allow blending of a large portion of the high-dolomite pebble. This research was conducted based on that logic. The following six approaches were tested for reducing MgO content in the flotation concentrate: (1) Adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step; (2) Dolomite flotation on the rougher concentrate with and without grinding; (3) Dolomite flotation on the cleaner concentrate with and without grinding; (4) Scrubbing the flotation feed; (5) Scrubbing the rougher concentrate; (6) Scrubbing the cleaner concentrate. Successful methods include adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation, dolomite flotation on the cleaner concentrate with grinding, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These techniques could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20-40%. The flotation process could achieve a concentrate with the lowest MgO content, but it is the most expensive approach. Adding a dolomite is inexpensive and easy, but the effect is limited. Overall, scrubbing may be the most promising technology for this purpose.

"A history of mill strain gaging at Metso is presented. The output of these strain-gaging programs is compared with calculated stress ranges from different finite element solutions. These comparisons expose the amount of approximation that exists in the analytical solutions, starting from geometry, and material properties, and ending with different forms of internal load models. The influence of strain gaging results on mill design and analysis practices is also discussed. While these instrumentation programs are valuable in identifying areas of high stress in mills, and locations of stress concentration factors, they are by no means extensive or comprehensive enough to verify general internal load models. The vast majority of the programs were aimed at getting additional data about potential failure points, rather than describing overall mill stress behavior. This is especially true since the more recent gaging programs have not included the difficult task of gaging the mill rotating structure interior. This paper tries to avoid the novice path of leaping to general conclusions on the basis of insufficient data."

"A hydrocyclone with two vortex finders, named the three-product cyclone, has been successfully tested in the Platinum industry for dealing with the dense chromite found in UG2 ores. This dense component preferentially reports to the cyclone underflow, resulting in an over-ground fine chromite component in the final product. The dense media effect caused by a high chromite concentration in the cyclone feed produces a coarsening of the cyclone overflow, which results in loss of recovery through over-size material in the float feed. The fine barren particles of chromite that report to the overflow are recovered through entrainment in the flotation process, resulting in detrimental contamination of the slag produced from the concentrate.With the three-product cyclone a middlings product has been extracted that has a higher concentration of fine chromite. This volumetric stream flow represents a small percentage of the total cyclone feed and it is thus possible to treat it separately via fine screening to remove the fine chromite from the system and recover coarse silica."

The Bureau of Mines has begun a study of the copper resources of the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The program includes reconnaissance of mineralized areas and examination and occasionally limited exploration of deposits that are considered characteristic of an area. The Bureau of Mines believes that published information may assist industry in searching for new sources of copper. The Miners Queen is one of a few Cascade Mountain deposits selected for prelim¬inary exploration. The investigation was not planned to delineate the ore body. A diamond-drilling program was carried out at the Miners Queen mine in the summer of 1955. Five diamond-drill holes were completed, totaling 628 feet. Two 35-foot shafts were dewatered, and all accessible underground and surface workings were examined.

"SummaryThis paper is presented as part of a programme to show the steps taken by industry and others interested in supplying a solid fuel of constant quality to 'satisfy a consuming market. The paper deals with the general principles underlying quality control in coal preparation plants, namely, constant quality and close adherance to acceptance limits. It also describes how control of ash content is ""generally hampered by the problem of coal sampling .and the long duration of the ash analysis and how these difficulties may be overcome.Quality control can be effected in several ways. Thorough blending wll reduce variations appreciably, except those of long trend. The latter can be detected by automatic sampling and quick ash analysis. At present, under favourable conditions, a system of half-hourly ash determinations with an accuracy of 0.5 to 1.0 per cent can be realized, to the effect that trends with a 'wave length' of more than two hours cu be eliminated within the limits of accuracy of the ash figures. The general solution of the problem is a combination of blending, accurate sampling, quick ash determination, and statistical analysis of the pattern of ash distribution.The use of statistical methods of analysis, such as the t test and F test, is •discussed at some length in order to emphasize the importance of the correct evaluation of observational data if there is to be confidence in the validity of test results.General ConsiderationsCOAL, as a fuel, is too cheap for a long haul across the country. The limiting distance depends on the price of the local competitive fuels, and, as the price depends to a great extent on quality, so does quality, to the same extent, command the market."

The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

Fundamental studies on the reaction of limestone or dolomite at high temperature with S02 are extended to the realm of large scale primary copper smelting. Whereas flue gas desulfurisation in the electric power utility industry is concerned with S02 concentrations normally less than 0.5 percent, high temperature smelting gases can have S02 levels approaching 100 percent. The reaction involved is very exothermic so proposals are made in this paper for returning the heat generated in sulfur fixation directly back to the copper smelting process. This integration leads to metal production with lower energy requirements than current technology. The anhydrite reaction product can either be disposed of locally with minimum adverse environmental impact or upgraded to a value-added product. It is assumed, of course, that no viable market exists to support sulfuric acid production.

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

Cononish is a steep, narrow NE-SW trending vein system that was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments. It shows brittle style deformation and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian foliations. The ore shoots plunge 45¦SW, have a 40 to 80?m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 and 260?m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two and rarely three of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold. Silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally <100?¦m in size and locally clusters. Visible gold up to 2000?¦m in size is rare. Gold and silver are generally spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur also. Electrum and gold occur with galena in pyrite-hosted fractures. Gold is also associated with the contacts between galena and pyrite grains. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Over 16?km of diamond drilling and a 1.2?km exploration adit has provided data to support a Mineral Resource estimate of 169?000?oz Au and 631?000?oz Ag reported in accordance with the 2004 JORC Code.CITATION:Dominy, S C, Platten, I M, Xie, Y and Sangster, C J S, 2013. "Evidence shows that methane gas emanates from the mined-out area or gob of a longwall coal mine and can travel towards the working face, posing an explosion risk. Since the gob consists of varying levels of compacted rock, many researchers have modeled fluid flow through the gob as a Darcy-type porous media with a specified porosity and permeability. When studying methane gas explosions near the gob fringe, the Darcy flow assumption may not be applicable to describe the methane flame interaction with the gob. Computational fluid dynamic studies were performed modeling methane flame propagation across a simulated gob which was modeled as both a Darcy porous medium and as discrete rock objects with varying sphericity. Modeling the gob as a Darcy porous medium results in unrealistic methane flame propagation since the porous media assumption does not consider any differences in rock size and/or distribution. Additionally, the porous media model does not allow for ignition within and subsequent flame propagation through the porous medium, which must be modeled to understand the potential for methane gas explosions in the gob area. Modeling the gob as discrete rock objects produces more realistic methane flame dynamics and agrees with experimental observations. Modeling results show flame propagation across circles, hexagons, and squares, meant to represent rock rubble in the gob, produce different levels of turbulence which affects methane flame propagation velocity. This research demonstrates that modeling methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine environment, specifically near the gob area, requires modeling obstacles, such as rock rubble, as discrete physical objects to capture the complex coupling of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. INTRODUCTION Although there are methods to mitigating methane accumulations in a longwall coal mine, explosive gas zones (EGZs) of methane and air may exist and pose an explosion risk to nearby miners and equipment (Brune, 2014) (Karacan, Ruiz, Cote, & Phipps, 2011). In the event of an explosion, the resulting methane flame and pressure wave can be catastrophic as evidenced by the Upper Big Branch explosion in 2010 that killed 29 miners (Page, et al., 2011). Since the mining process is transient, it is difficult to determine exactly where these EGZs exist, but investigative reports show in many cases, these EGZs can be near the working face, behind the shields, or within the gob area (Brune, 2014) (McKinney, et al., 2001). Additionally, miners have recounted seeing flames moving back and forth within the gob and under the roof supports (McKinney, et al., 2001) and in other cases, anecdotal evidence of hearing small pressure pops deep within the gob area (Brune, 2014)."

A major hazard to workers in underground mines is fire and the resulting contaminated air. Fire reaches miners thousands of yards away with carbon monoxide gas and other toxic fumes. The same ventilation system that furnishes fresh air to miners can also be the vehicle to carry contaminated air to remote locations. To reduce these problems, the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines entered into Contract H0242016, "Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System," with FMC Corporation, Santa Clara, California, to evaluate mine shaft fire and smoke hazards and to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, reliable mine shaft fire and smoke protection system that would be applicable to a majority of metal and nonmetal mine shafts, including raises and winzes, especially in deep mines.

Rare earth elements (REEs) contained in coal and associated mineral matter exist in several forms including micro-dispersed minerals, ion adsorption onto clay surfaces, and chemically bound. Tests found that REEs can be effectively recovered from certain components of three coal sources by leaching under mild conditions followed by solvent extraction. A range of pH values were evaluated at solution temperatures of 25 and 75 °C. When using 1.2 M of sulfuric acid, nearly 85% recovery of the REEs was extracted from the middlings material collected from an operating plant. Acid leaching of a second middling source from another plant resulted in 60% of the total REEs being recovered under the same leaching conditions. Solvent extraction treatment of the leachate produced from six different coal sources resulted in products containing up to 50% total REEs from feedstocks starting with around 300 ppm.

"Modem aluminum smelters are facing significant operating cost pressure. Key methods used by smelters to manage this pressure are automation and production-information systems to optimize processes, manage quality, anticipate problems and reduce operating costs. In 2002, Aluminerie Alouette Inc. began its Phase II Expansion project, and retained the joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and Hatch (SLH) as its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) team. Alouette had the distinction of being one of the most efficient aluminum smelters in the world. Alouette already understood the importance of systems integration in project delivery. For Phase II, key objectives were identified to ensure ""a state of the art"" integrated architecture that would support Alouette's production goals to integrate the existing facilities with the expansion, to form a single efficient facility and meet project schedule and budget targets. Achieving those objectives within the context of a large project often creates major challenges due to the nature of the traditional EPCM delivery model, which relies on several vendors and third-party-systems integrators. In this case, an integrated Alouette-SLH team was made responsible for all aspects of the systems integration, taking over the task from most suppliers. The integrated team was responsible for delivering an automation system and plant-wide-production IT system for the new facilities while accommodating migration for the existing systems. Through the use of rigorous methodology and advanced state of the art technology, the IT and automation strategy led to significant value creation and is recognized today as one of the key factors of the project's success. The primary results were: fast and efficient start-up of facilities, due to quality programming and implementation; a plant able to operate as a single entity; automation and IT systems delivered before time and under budget; standard programming methods implemented throughout the plant; and reduced and simplified maintenance."

Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water, and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator.
