A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. "Traditional techniques for valuing resource projects companies have been primarily based on discounted cashflow methods (DCF) or by comparison to similar projects with an apparent market capitalization. Many resource projects are really forms of options to invest rather than a future cashflow stream. Employing the DCF method to value a resource project which is really an option to invest, can dramatically underestimate the real value of the project. The analytical tools required to evaluate options, while more complicated than the usual spreadsheets used for DCF, are becoming more easily available and usable by managers. They were familiar to Roman and Phoenician traders who were shipping cargoes from Mediterranean seaports. In the financial world, options are types of contracts that generally include the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a share, currency or commodity. The underlying commodity price or share price changes are assumed to be lognormally distributed. In this context, options are of two general types, ""call"" options and ""put"" options. Call options have the characteristic of having the right to buy a tradable commodity or currency at a predetermined price for a specified period of time. For the owner of call options, they become more valuable as the price of the underlying commodity increases. For the seller of call options, these options become an increasing liability as commodity prices rise, since there is the obligation to sell the commodity at a predetermined (perhaps lower-than-market) price. This characteristic of call options recently became high profile with the sharp rise in gold prices last year. The value of gold call options sold by certain producers increased their associated liabilities to the point where margin calls were made."

The voice of the farmer is raised in appeal to the Government to relieve him from the dilemma of his own fertility. In answer the Government employs thousands of experts and spends millions of dollars to aid the farmer. But to what end? To make him still more efficient so that he may produce even greater surpluses? One of the major improvements in ore grinding economics in North America has been the introduction of autogenous grinding. The history of this has been well documented in previous AIME presentations and in the literature. Pickands Mather & Co. has been very active in the development of autogenous grinding since 1957. This early work led to the application of autogenous grinding to the Wabush Mines ore in 1965, with the installation of 6-24 ft. diameter by 8 ft. long - 1,750 HP mills. Development work recently completed in 1971 on another ore has led to the decision to install 5-36 ft. diameter by 15 ft. long - 12,000 HP mills when this project goes ahead. Between these two decisions lies a tremendous amount of research, development, and application of autogenous grinding to a variety of ores. The Pickands Mather Metallurgical and Research Laboratory in Hibbing, Minnesota has tested, in its pilot plant facility, ores from 9 different deposits. Some of these deposits have as much difference within their own ore types as there is between the various deposits. Therefore, it is safe to say that over 20 different ore types have been tested and flowsheets developed for commercial applications. Of the 9 projects, 3 are in operation. These are Wabush Mines in Labrador, Canada, (1) Savage River Mines in Tasmania, (2) and The Griffith Mine in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. (3) Pilot plant work has encompassed over 300 individual tests. These tests were carried out in mills that were 5-1/2, 8, and 12 ft. in diameter. Grinding power requirements for the primary autogenous milling has varied from 2 to 30 KWH/Lt of crude ore.

A shaped charge is an explosive device used to focus detonation energy in a desired direction. Shaped charges have numerous applications in several industries such as oil extraction, weaponry and demolition. The focusing of the detonation energy is the result of the Munroe Effect, which greatly increases the penetration properties of the explosive due to a void in the explosive’s volume. The void in the explosive is lined with a metal substrate that becomes a super-heated projectile when the explosive is detonated. Additive Manufacturing (AM) can allow greater design freedom and geometric complexity for the liner portion of the shaped charge. Specifically, hierarchical structuring and functional grading can potentially provide greater velocity, directionality, and efficiency. By utilizing AM, the conventional use of shaped charges can be greatly expanded upon and may open new possibilities. In this work, selective laser melting (SLM) was used to explore different conical shaped charge (CSC) liners made out of stainless steel 304L. A series of liners were tested that had varying densities and were compared to conventional liners. The CSCs were filled with the high explosive Composition C-4 and detonated to evaluate performance. The blast events were recorded using break wire screens to calculate the velocity of the jet through steel target plates over a standoff of 6 times the charge diameter. A high-speed camera recorded the blast event to calculate the velocity of the jet through the air. The depth of penetration into the steel target plates was also used as a measurement of the effectiveness of the CSCs. The aim of this work is to show the potential for advanced shaped charges produced using SLM.

Although the solubility of oxygen in zinc electrolyte is less than 9 mg/L, the effect on deposit stability and zinc-dust consumption can be significant. Sodium sulfite is used to deoxygenate the electrolyte. The effect of the sodium-sulfite concentration on cobalt removal is investigated. The results show the reduction of sulfite to elemental sulfur that adhered to the zinc dust surface forming a passivating layer, and small amounts of sodium sulfite have no effect on cobalt removal. The optimum amount of sodium sulfite is 100 mg/L. It is an important consideration in purification circuits to use sodium sulfite as an additive to cobalt cementation.

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated aqueous electrolysis as a means for reducing lead chloride prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate: NaC1 PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeC12 + S°. During electrolysis, metal was produced from solid lead chloride in contact with the cathode rather than from lead in solution. Relatively high current densities--up to 300 amp/ft2--were possible when operating in this way. A very simple cell, having a horizontal lead cathode at the bottom and a vertical graphite anode at the top, was employed. Lead chloride crystals, covering the cathode, were converted to metal powder during electrolysis, and chlorine gas or FeCls was produced at the anode, depending on the electrolyte composition. Electrolytes tried included aqueous solutions of HCI, NaCl, NH4Cl, and FeC12-NaC1. Optimum results (96-pct current efficiency, 0.23 kwhr/lb Pb) were obtained with 20 pct HC1 at 25° C, using a current density of 15 amp/ft2 and an electrode spacing of 1 inch. When the current density was increased, the energy requirement increased also but only to 0.41 kwhr/lb at 150 amp/fr3 and 0.58 kwhr/lb at 300 amp/ft2.

Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills AQ or BQ holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.

"The Hardy Cross algorithm offers a reliable method of solving network systems of fluid flow and has become widely used for solving water and ventilation flow networks. A limitation is that computational iterations and time to solve a network rises rapidly with the size of the model and modern detailed ventilation networks have typically grown to thousands of airways. Non-linear matrix solving methods can offer improved performance, however these are more complex and may be unstable if initial estimates are poor. This paper presents improvements that can be applied to the traditional Hardy Cross algorithm to greatly reduce iterations and solving time for large ventilation models. INTRODUCTION The Hardy Cross algorithm (Cross, 1936), was originally developed to solve water flow in city and urban pipe networks. Using principles of Kirchhoff’s electricity current laws, Hardy Cross developed an iterative algorithm for solving non-linear equations associated with network water flow. Traditional network analysis research refers to the various members of system networks as branches, nodes and meshes. This terminology has been changed in this paper to airways, junctions and loops respectively which are terms more familiar to engineers in mine ventilation. When Kirchhoff’s laws are applied to fluid networks, the following assumptions can be made: •The sum of fluid flows into a junction must equal the sum of fluid flows out of the junction.•The sum of pressure losses around any loop through a network system must be equal to zero.An iterative solution can therefore be achieved by initially guessing flow in a network, calculatingthe pressure losses around the network loops (Figure 1), and applying flow corrections using Newton’s method for each loop if the sum of the pressure losses does not equal zero. To solve the system, a loop must be defined for every segment or series of segments between a junction of 3 or more airways.The Hardy Cross algorithm has been used extensively for ventilation network analysis since the introduction of the first electronic computers (Tien, 1997), however numerous other variations and methods have since been developed through the use of matrices to solve the required system of nonlinear equations. Commonly used algorithms such as the Newton Raphson method (Brown, 1969), the Gradient method (Todini & Pilati, 1988), the Linear Theory method (Gupta & Prasad, 2000), and Coupled Network Solver (G. Danko, 2008) have found general use in fluid flow network solvers (Rossman, 2000). Despite poor and sometimes unpredictable convergence performance however, the Hardy Cross algorithm still has unique properties that make it attractive for ventilation models. Some benefits are:"

"The two tubes of tunnel Hirschhagen along the highway A44 in Germany, underpass the federal road B7, a railway line and the valley of the river Losse close to the city of Hessisch Lichtenau. The ground in the area consists of Triassic sand- and siltstones (""Buntsandstein"") as well as tertiary clays. Prior to tunneling, the groundwater in the area is planned to be lowered by means of a gallery of deep wells. As a basis for the design of this dewatering gallery, two large pumping tests have been carried out. The results of these tests have been evaluated by means of 3D-Finite Element analyses. By means of the large-scale model, the influence of the anisotropy resulting from jointing and bedding and the influence of fault zones in the area have been taken into account, which lead to a thorough basis for the design of the dewatering gallery.INTRODUCTIONThe 4.2 km long Tunnel Hirschhagen of the highway A 44 crosses below the federal road B7, a railway line and the river Losse close to the city of Hessisch-Lichtenau in central Germany. Both tunnel tubes are located in a subrosion depression in which Triassic sandstone and tertiary clay prevail. It is planned to lower the groundwater table in the area of the meadow of the Losse prior to tunnel heading [1]. Groundwater lowering is planned to be achieved by means of a series of large pumping wells. The bottom of the river Losse will be sealed in order to avoid direct inflow of water from the river into the ground (Fig. 1 and 2)."

"The application of piled raft foundations has significantly increased during the last few years. In this system, the raft and the pile group collectively transfer the applied building load to the underlying soil layers. Determination of load sharing between the raft and the piles derives the complexity of piled raft designs due to its multi-parameter nature. These parameters are but not limited to: soil density, pile length, pile spacing, raft geometry, and piles installation technique. This study is to examine experimentally the effect of sand density and pile installation techniques on the load sharing mechanism. Experimentally, tests were conducted on a square rigid raft with a single pile in sand under three different soil densities; 30%, 45%, and 60%. The experimental results are used to determine the pile and the raft shares in non-displacement and displacement piled raft systems. The results of this study reveal that soil density changes the load sharing of displacement piled raft; the pile share increases in higher soil density. However, this is not the case in non-displacement piled raft and load sharing is independent of soil density in working loads.IntroductionThe piled raft foundation is a combination of shallow and deep foundation which transfers the superstructure load to the soil by a complex soilstructure interaction. The interacting mechanism among foundation elements and their surrounding soil is illustrated schematically in Figure 1 and could be classified into two categories: (1) pile-soil-pile and (2) pile-soil-raft. The pile-soil-pile interaction is the same as the free standing pile group and is a function of pile spacing and pile installation method. Pile-soil-raft interaction, which only involves in piled raft foundation design, could be affected by: the length, spacing, and roughness of the pile, the rigidity and dimension of the cap, soil condition, and the pile installation method. Pile-soil-raft interaction could have favourable and unfavourable effects on bearing capacity and settlement, respectively. The pressure between the cap and the soil favourably increases the horizontal stress on the pile shaft and consequently increase the shaft resistance. Whereas, this pressure induces negative skin friction on the piles which increases the settlement. The pile-soil-raft interaction mainly controls the load sharing mechanism of piled raft foundation when pile spacing (S) is more than 3.5dp."

The first step in energy conservation in any industrial plant involves implementing many of the day-to-day "house-keeping" items such as fixing leaks, turning out lights, etc. When this step has been accomplished, additional opportunities require a detailed analysis of the energy systems, evaluation of risks and costs, and assignment of priorities. Examples of conservation schemes drawn from the experience of Du pont's Energy Management Consulting Services will be discussed. The utility of heat balances for kilns and dryers in minerals processing will be outlined. The inputs needed from Management for the success of conservation efforts will be discussed.

THE Industrial Minerals Division this year held no individual sessions of its own except the business meeting Tuesday afternoon. One session was held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists, one with the Milling Methods Committee, and two with the Society of Economic Geologists and the Mining Geology Committee. At all of these meetings the attendance was better than usual and the Tuesday afternoon session, with nearly 400 present, probably set a new record for the Division. Joint sessions seem extremely popular when papers of mutual interest are presented. On Monday afternoon, mica was the predominating subject. The North Carolina mines provided most of the information presented, although the discussion brought out similarities with the New England mines. B. C. Burgess particularly stressed the fact that with the existing curtailment of mica from India it is necessary to get the most mica in the shortest time from the mines in this country. He said that the Colonial Mica Corp. hopes to have 1000 mines operating in the near future. This seems a great number, but when one considers that these mines employ from 3 to 28 men, mostly nearer the low figure, the output of each mine is relatively small. Although the price of mica is from six to ten times the prewar price, the yield of 8 to 150 lb. of mica per ton of raw ore does not provide high returns to the producer.

Blast violence has always been a criteria that has been analyzed without a quantitative approach relying on opinions of those viewing the blast and oftentimes does not transfer between open-pit mines, quarries, and construction projects. Added to this confusion is that on many regulate projects, such as U.S. Army Corp of Engineers construction projects, the definition of "flyrock" or violence can vary, and contractors must be able to meet this requirement. This project analyzed hundreds of blasts from various construction projects to develop a new metric to determine blast violence - the Violence Factor.
