"OZ MineralsÆ Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-east of Adelaide, 130 km north-east of BHP BillitonÆs Olympic Dam operation and 130 km south-east of the regional township of Coober Pedy, in the Gawler Craton region of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a 10 Mt/a ore throughput capacity, operating well over the design rate of 8 Mt/a. Increased throughput rates have seen a decreased water recovery from the tailing thickener due to operating above design. Subsequently, greater pressure was placed on the site water balance and bore field off-take rates due to increased evaporation losses from greater volumes of water reporting to the tailing storage facility. This resulted in a trade-off between water availability and milling rates as part of the operating strategy.Two projects were implemented to increase the tailing thickener underflow density, thus improving water recovery directly back into the operating plant, reducing water losses via evaporation and decreasing the reliance on the bore field system operating at maximum rates to maintain mill throughput. The two projects were: tailing thickener feedwell redesign implementation of the Manta Cube control system.This paper discusses the background, implementation and benefits attained from these two key projects. Combined they have allowed a two to three per cent increase in tailing thickener underflow density to be consistently achieved, which has allowed greater water recovery. As a result, the processing plant has been able to operate at higher throughput rates when required, with greater water availability in the process plant recirculating system and a reduction in occurrences of the plant being æslowed downÆ due to water supply shortfalls. High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Comminution is the process by which rock or ore is reduced to a size where the liberation of the minerals is maximized without changing the chemical or physical properties of the rock. Comminution accounts for about 50% of all energy that mines use (Klein et al., 2018). Growing demands from stakeholders and shareholders for sustainable development and CO2 reduction will increase the need for energy-efficient comminution. Ores with different mineralogical characteristics, textures, strengths, apparent stiffness, and mass-specific fracture energies need to be processed with a specific, new, and efficient comminution technology to increase the production and profitability of mining companies. The adoption of crusher wear parts built with new materials, such as non-Hadfield manganese steel or synthetic materials or traditional manganese with wear-resistant components, could improve the efficiency of the crushers, reduce downtime, increase production, improve the desired P80 (the aperture through which 80% of the product will pass) product size distribution, and enhance mine safety.

Mixed fatty acids, such as oxidised paraffin soap, are frequently used as a substitute for oleic acid in flotation of scheelite in China. Not only because it is cheaper than oleic acid, but also because it is superior in flotation performance to oleic acid. This superiority is generally attributed to the mixed fatty acids' synergistic effect. In this paper, the synergistic effect of oxidised paraffin soap was investigated. We found it mainly consists of a series of saturated fatty acid salts, with six to nineteen carbon atoms. All the contained fatty acids were classified into four groups based on their chain length to make the research work practical. Also, the groups were labelled as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order. The research was simplified into studying the synergistic effect of four equivalent collectors, instead of fourteen fatty acids. It is justified by the fact that neighbouring fatty acids are expected to have a similar flotation performance. The synergistic effect of the four groups of fatty acids was studied by single-mineral flotation with single groups, binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and the full component, as collector respectively. The flotation performance index and synergy value were introduced to evaluate flotation performance and synergistic effect of groups, respectively. The results show that the mixture 1+2+3 has the strongest synergy of all followed by the mixtures 1+3 and 2+3. The mixture 3+4 and 1+2, on the other hand, have negative synergy. The synergistic effect of mixtures of groups indicate that being consecutive in length and a broad range of lengths are vital for fatty acids to enhance synergy. Group 3 is fundamental for the collecting action of 733 oxidised paraffin soap in the flotation of scheelite. The fatty acid soap in group 4 is not suitable for flotation due to its low solubility. Radioactivity, the property of radium that led to its isolation more than 30 years ago, is the characteristic that makes it of value in the treatment of disease. Tyler3 gives the following brief history of the investigation: The way to the discovery of radium was opened in 1895 by Rontgen, who found that the glow from a Crooke's tube contained penetrating rays, which .he called X rays. Prof. Henri Bequerel, while investigating the effect of various phosphor¬ escent substances, found that uranium salts produced photographic impressions even when enveloped with opaque substances. To Marie Sklovouski, a young Polish student, who later became Madame Curie, Professor Bacquerel delegated the task of learning how and why uranium possessed power to emit these peculiar rays, which he had proved to be electrical in character. Madam Curie, examining by electri¬ cal methods the radioactivity of a large number of minerals containing uranium and thorium, discovered that some specimens of pitchblende had about four times the activity of the metal uranium; that chalcolite, the crystallized phosphate of copper and uranium, was twice as active as uranium; that autunite, a phosphate of calcium and uranium, was quite as active as the same weight of pure uranium. In order to check these discoveries, she prepared chalcolite artificially, starting with pure products, but found that this artificial chalcolite had only the acti¬ vity represented by its composition, or, roughly, 40 per cent of the activity of uranium. This led to the conclusion that there was some element or substance in the residue from uranium minerals that possesses a high degree of activity. After an exhaustive chemical investigation of pitchblende from Joachimsthal, she found that this mineral contained not only uranium but also another radioactive sub¬ stance, to which she gave the name of polonium, in honor of her native land. Later in 1898, Monsieur and Madame Curie found still another element, which, when brought to a state of concentration, was several million times as active as uranium, and to this was given the name of radium. Debierne afterwards found a fifth radio¬ active substance, actinium; and in 1906 Boltwood isolated the metal ionium. Strict¬ ly pure radium chloride was first produced in 1902. The first radium was produced commercially from the uranium residues obtained from the mines of Joachimsthal, Bohemia. Tyler calls to attention that, as the ores were a government monopoly, search was begun at once for sources in other parts of the world. As a result, radium-containing ores have been found in about 10 countries.

The construction and modification of tunnels brings a requirement for precise measurement of convergence and divergence to safeguard the structure, maintain safety and provide the assurance needed to maintain efficient progress. Established methods include manual measurement using tape extensometers and automated methods using photogrammetry and automated total stations. Drawbacks include the need for frequent access, power supply, cabling, and cost. The paper describes how the development of reliable optical displacement sensors (ODS) has changed the landscape. ODS sensors are connected to a long-range wireless mesh communications network via a solar-powered gateway outside the tunnel, with data instantly transmitted to the internet. A sensor and its reflector target can be installed in 20 minutes and is maintenance free for a decade. Tunnel movement is measured to sub-millimeter precision with repeatability of ±0.15 mm. Integration of a triaxial tilt sensor allows slope distance to be converted to horizontal and vertical changes and allows rotational movement to be determined. Applications include new-build and long-term structural health monitoring. Case studies will be given, including the refurbishment of rail tunnels in Spain where the ODS measured movement during track lowering in a situation where no other automated system was considered viable.

The risk of TBM jamming because of squeezing rock mass or excessive caving (instability of the cavity) conditions is always a focal point while boring long and deep tunnels with shielded TBMs. Mechanized excavation provides a large amount of real-time data, for each machine’s parameters. Several analyses have been executed to assess the correlations between different sets of TBM parameters for the exploratory tunnel. Instead of analyzing the full dataset, a different approach is proposed, with data processed sequentially to simulate the real excavation situation. The probability distributions are recalculated together with their statistical parameters while advancing. This approach is extended also to the training of a Machine Learning model able to foresee the behavior at future rings based on past rings (using a Recurrent Neural Network). The predictions show a promising first step toward creating practical tools that can assist contractors and designers to correlate and predict TBM excavation data. These tools will assist to predict and quantify high risk situations that could arise during excavation.

It has been said that safety promotion passes through four stages--the band-playing, the machine-guarding, the protective equipment, and finally the educational stage; the last is the most important in the development of the safety program. It has been estimated that only 15 percent of accidents can be pre- vented by machine guarding and protective equipment; the other 85 percent must be stopped by the safety efforts of the individual workers and their supervisory officials, and one of the fundamentals of safety work is the education of workers to develop safety consciousness or safety mindedness. One way of educating men to think about safety is by the use of posters. Safety engineers at the Calumet 2 Hecla mines in Michigan have been conduct- ing a safety contest among the men by the use of posters of an unusual type in addition to those usually employed to illustrate bad practices and to display the number of days without a lost-time accident. The first requisite for the success of the safety poster is a good artist or draftsman; in the poster contest instituted at the Calumet & Hecla mines two sheets were prepared illustrating various conditions in the slope workings, including a large number of unsafe practices. The object of the contest was to get the men to think about safety through criticism of the unsafe conditions displayed on the posters. The following notice accom- panied the posters:

Slag from smelting reduction processes were characterized by chemical analysis, XRD, SEM-EDS and XRF. The results revealed Ag concentrations of 362 g/t of slag, the slag mineralogical characterization by XRD and SEM-EDS showed mineralogical species oxidized complex containing Pb, Zn, Ca, Si, Fe, As, S in its structure, silver was found in globules associated lead in the slag and the furutobeite specie. The leaching study was conducted to evaluate process variables such as NaCN concentration: from 7.8x10-3M - 1.26x10-1M, temperature: 25-50°C, particle size: +140 mesh to -400 mesh, stirring speed of 750 rpm - 900 rpm. All studies were performed with a NaOH concentration of 0.2 M. The optimal values of silver recovery encountered in conditions of 7.8x10-3M NaCN, agitation rate of 750 rpm, temperature of 35°C and with a treatment time of 240 min. We also observed that a particle size -400 mesh will have optimum recoveries compared to +140 mesh, +200, +270 and +325.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar as melhores condições para promover a recristalização entre passes, durante a laminação a quente em laminador Steckel, de um aço inoxidável ferrítico AISI 430 estabilizado ao Nióbio. A laminação a quente de acabamento foi simulada através de ensaios de torção utilizando um esquema em diferentes temperaturas. A ocorrência de recristalização entre os passes de laminação foi estudada através de interrupções antes de alguns passes. As amostras ensaiadas foram analisadas por microscopia ótica e MEV-EBSD (difração de elétrons retro-espalhados). Os resultados deste trabalho mostraram ser possível promover a recristalização entre passes durante a laminação de acabamento do aço AISI 430 estabilizado ao Nb. Foi, ainda, estabelecida a melhor faixa de temperatura para a promoção de recristalização.

The Gunnar uranium mine operated from 1953 to 1961 on the shore of Lake Athabasca, in 1964 the site was abandoned, and the mine pit flooded. In 1981, the pit was found to be stratified with a chemocline at ~70 m by a sharp change in conductivity and TDS. The uranium concentration was ~700 μg/l on the surface, 320 μg/l at 50 m, and 2,900 μg/l at 110 m. The Ra-226 concentrations were 0.1, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.4 Bq/l. By 2017, the chemocline was ~60 m deep. The highest uranium concentration was 1150 μg/l and the lowest concentration (220 μg/l) was attributed to the chemocline. In the deeper column, the uranium content varied around 750 μg/l. The uranium distribution down the pit profile was aligned with DO, ORP, and TDS. Ra-226 averaged to ~0.4 Bq/l, Ra-226 and uranium profiles were inversely related with the respective maximum and minimum attributed to the chemocline. The uranium and radium amount accumulated in the pit by 2017 was 3,420 kg and 2,163 GBq, respectively. The uranium and radium apparent accumulation trend estimates to 64 kg/y and 41 MBq/y, respectively. A stable chemocline and no concentration gradients in the other parts of the pit suggest that the contaminants are unlikely to inflow from the bottom opening or outside the pit, but rather are mobilized from the pit walls. The contaminants are not in a steady state, and concentrations of both uranium and radium are likely to increase slowly in the future if no remediation occurs.

Many of us are privileged in that we have witnessed the transition from mining methods used in the first quarter of the twentieth' century to those practiced today. In the late Twenties, for example, many mines still used hand mucking methods. In the middle Thirties, more than one large metallurgical limestone quarry still used the 4 cubic yard railway steam shovel formerly in use at the Panama Canal. Mules could occasionally still be found underground, where they provided the-main-source of motive power. Within the last decade, and even within the past five years or less, great improvements have been made in blast-hole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling equipment. Industrial demand for minerals can be expressed in exponential terms as compared to that at the turn of the century. Even marine mineral resources are receiving accelerated attention. One overall result is that larger and lower grade orebodies can be exploited at a profit. This profit must be made despite, for example, a static monetary price for gold, and despite the continual cost escalation involving labor, materials, supplies, and equipment. Accordingly, the application of the necessary degree of knowledge and judgment required to meet production, cost, and profit goals is paramount.

This paper outlines the type of water-bearing formations encountered in the Prairie Sediments and describes a method for effectively sealing these zones in order that shaft-sinking operations may be carried out with safety. Details are given of the procedure for carrying probe holes ahead of the shaft bottom. These probe or grout holes are employed for establishing a series of overlapping grout covers around the proposed shaft excavation to safeguard against large inflows of water during sinking. The pattern and length of grout covers cannot be standardized, and each cover needs to be specially designed to suit the varying ground conditions. In order to provide effective protection through the Prairie Sediments, the number of holes in any one cover would not be less than 8, and possibly as many as 64 would be required in certain zones. The length of covers would vary from 100 ft. to 250 ft. Emphasis is placed on the need for obtaining accurate geological and water information from exploratory holes, drilled in the shaft vicinity, in order to effectively plan all grout covers.

The Søderberg electrode was invented about 95 years ago by the company Elektrokjemisk, later known as ELKEM. It is still the most commonly used electrode system in submerged-arc furnaces for ferroalloys, platinum smelting, and slag cleaning operations. The size of the furnaces and electrodes has increased over the years and electrode diameters up to 2000 mm are today in use. Such large electrodes can be challenging to manage, and large electrodes are also more demanding when it comes to the electrode paste used in the electrodes. Although electrode sizes and equipment around the electrodes have changed, the main principles of the Søderberg electrode processes are the same. To assists in proper understanding of the electrode processes and to optimize electrode management, Elkem has developed several mathematical tools covering various aspect of the process. Both temperatures and thermal stresses can be calculated during dynamic conditions. The paper demonstrates, with examples, how the tools are used in both education and as practical input to improved electrode performance.

Black powder has been used in fireworks since the 10 th century in China. To this day, black powder still has a variety of uses, including fireworks, and remains relatively unchanged. Black powder is used in the firework shell to help produce the effect and in the lift charge to propel the shell skyward. The performance of fireworks shells used in displays varies greatly. In fireworks shells, there are two different black powder charges that differ in construction based on the desired performance of the shell. The two charges consist of the lift charge and the break charge. The lift charge is the first to fire and propels the shell out of the mortar. The break charge is the second to fire and is initiated after a delay from the lift charge; its purpose is to burst the shells effect over the desired area of the sky. The lift charge provides the shell with its initial velocity by pressurizing the mortar below the shell body. The pressurization process is violent and occurs in fractions of a second. The purpose of these experiments are to better understand the pressures sustained in fireworks mortars during the firing process. Mortars and shells vary by size and weight. Pressures in each mortar were monitored at various heights along the mortar to provide a pressure profile during shell lift. A high-speed camera was used to measure shell exit velocity near the mortar’s muzzle. This information was correlated with the size and weight of shells and their respective lift charges

Efficient and safe use of mobile roof supports (MRS) depends on the interaction between the MRS and coal strata. Of particular interest to this study are the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods, and MRS load-bearing capabilities. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, the authors have collected and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one western U.S. mine and have completed pseudo-three-dimensional, boundary-element modeling for two typical pillar-pulling plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of MRS’s was calculated to demonstrate how MRS’s contributed to the control of roof block movements. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and by pillar-pulling sequences and layouts. MRS’s and other support systems play a critical role in controlling the stability of both the immediate roof and the middle roof for a distance of up to 18 m (60ft) above the seam. MRS’s provide unique ground control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of secondary support. Although MRS’s are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at near-peak capacity, whereas posts fail and loose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

For many years, mine-impacted water has been regarded as a problem and linked to long-term environmental liabilities. However, this water can be a renewable and a sustainable resource, provided that it is managed in a responsible and sensible manner. South Africa’s National Water Resource Strategy (NWRS, 2013) considers water that can be used to contribute to economic activity to be a water resource. Although all water resources are considered as belonging to the State, government does not appear to have meaningfully explored the use of mineimpacted water to contribute to the country’s economic activity. Africa is blessed with more sunshine than anywhere else, apart from Australia, yet we see no rollout of vast quantities of solar panels to ensure every African family has access to affordable power. This suggests that governments are incapable of managing such a free resource. At the same time, apart from the equatorial areas, water is a seriously constrained resource and yet we expect the same entities to manage a commodity none of us can live without. This paper explores the conversion of mine-impacted water from waste to a resource and how the inclusion of other stakeholders (such as water users, landowners, and ordinary South Africans) could benefit the process.

Controlar a distribuição de carga do Alto Forno é fundamental para o controle de processo, e através de sua otimização, dentre as mais variadas configurações operacionais, busca-se lograr da estabilidade do processo e aproveitamento do gás no interior do reator. Para tal, utiliza-se um sistema de carregamento, sendo o mais usado na atualidade o do tipo Bell Less Top com calha rotativa. Durante o carregamento do forno as partículas passam pela calha rotativa, resultando em abrasão dos elementos de desgaste que por sua vez, altera a geometria da mesma, gerando alterações na trajetória das partículas carregadas e a mudança de trajetória pode perturbar a marcha do Alto Forno. Nesse contexto, a boa condição da calha passa a ser um fator essencial para a manutenção da estabilidade operacional. O presente trabalho, aplica o método dos elementos discretos (DEM) para caracterizar os efeitos do desgaste da calha na trajetória do material descarregado, podendo assim avaliar melhor os distúrbios na estabilidade do Alto Forno, e com isso a indicar o melhor momento para troca da calha.

Copper anode slime is an increasingly significant resource for precious metals such as Au, Ag and Pd. The extraction of Au, Ag and Pd from decopperized anode slime by different pretreatments and different lixiviants including cyanide, chloride, thiourea and thiosulfate have been investigated. When oxidizing roasting pretreatment was carried out under the conditions of roasting time 120min and temperature 625 ℃, the removal ratios of S and Sb could reach 82.18% and 98.52%, respectively. And the following alkaline leaching of calcine could result in the dissolution of 46.40% Cu and 98.48% Pb. The optima leaching ratios of Au, Ag and Pd reached 99.48%, 97.69%, 94.79% by cyanide leaching, and 95.01%, 79.84%, 96.59% by chloride leaching, and about 95.21%, 95.66%, 48.79% by thiourea/thiosulfate leaching.

Durante os processos de beneficiamento de alumina, no processo Bayer, é gerado um resíduo insolúvel denominado lama vermelha. A incorporação de resíduos industriais em cerâmica vem sendo utilizada atualmente na busca de matérias-primas alternativas, e também buscando uma destinação ambientalmente correta aos resíduos que poluem. O objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar planejamento experimental para estudar a absorção de água em cerâmica incorporada com lama vermelha. Foram tomados pontos experimentais, cujos teores dos materiais utilizados variaram de 0 a 100%, e as formulações queimadas a 950°C. A argila verde e as misturas contendo maiores percentuais da mesma apresentaram menores valores de absorção de água e retração linear de queima. O modelo matemático que mais se ajustou foi o cúbico especial. Os resultados obtidos no planejamento de misturas mostram que para as três regiões experimentais propostas, o modelo cúbico especial foi o que mais se ajustou aos resultados reais, e que este é estatisticamente o melhor modelo matemático e deve ser usado para avaliar a absorção de água.
