Every mine contains inflammable materials, either in form of the minerals mined or in the form of brought-in supplies. Although great efforts are made to make mines as far as possible fireproof and to prevent ignition sources, the possibility of mine fires, like that of other accidents, will always continue to exist. Detailed statistics are available for coal mines. They show (65,112) that the number of major mine fires in the USA over the last 20 years has remained more or less constant with approximately 50 per year. The same number is reported (26) for the British coal mines. Other countries (147) report about 1 major fire for every 10 million tons of coal production. Conflicting data are published on the number of fatalities caused by fires, presumably because frequently deviating opinions on the cause of death exist. On the average (82,99) 4 miners are killed per year in the US and in the British coal mines. Although this number is much smaller than that for several other causes of fatalities, one must keep in mind that almost every small fire can develop into a large disaster.

Idaho has nearly 6 billion tons of potential sources of phosphorite, 10 to 31 percent P2O5' above and within 100 feet below entry level, the largest potential of any State in the United States. In 1963 Idaho ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock; Montana ranked fourth. This report describes phosphate deposits, mines, and prospects in 10 districts covering most of the Idaho phosphate field. All mine production of phosphate rock in Idaho comes from surface mines and is processed to phosphate fertilizers, phosphoric acid, and elemental phosphorus. Producing districts are Fort Hall (Gay mine), Trail Creek (Conda and Ballard mines), and Crow Creek (Georgetown Canyon mine). FMC Corp. and J. R. Simplot Co. at Pocatello have the largest elemental phosphorus and fertilizer production facilities, respectively, in the State, followed by Monsanto Co. and El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. (formerly Central Farmers Fertilizer Co.). The only other major phosphate processing plant in the State is the phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizer complex at Kellogg operated by the Bunker Hill Co. In 1963 a plant was constructed and put on line at Monsanto, Idaho, to recover vanadium from ferrophosphorus produced by electric furnace operations in the area. El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. completed construction of a fertilizer and phosphoric acid plant near Conda in 1965. There is a small fertilizer plant producing phosphate fertilizers for local consumption in Soda Springs.

"The FASTMELT ® process was developed as an alternative to blast furnace ironmaking; in this process, high-quality molten iron is produced using direct reduction followed by high-temperature slag/metal separation. In this study, iron recovery and phosphorus removal from oolitic highphosphorus haematite using the FASTMELT® process was investigated. The performance of two reducing agents, coal and wood char, was compared. Direct reduction experiments indicated that with optimized reductant addition, the ore-char and ore-coal briquettes attained metallization values of 82% and 78%, respectively, and residual carbon contents of 0.24 and 2.35%, respectively. The slag/metal separation experiments revealed that molten iron containing 0.41% phosphorus and 0.021% silicon (by mass) was produced from optimally reduced ore-char briquettes, and molten iron containing 0.78% phosphorus and 0.91% silicon from optimally reduced ore–coal briquettes. The study indicates that carbonaceous materials with high CO2 reactivity are suitable for use in the FASTMELT ® process for phosphorus removal and iron recovery from oolitic high-phosphorus haematite. IntroductionIn China, the general depletion of iron-rich mineral reserves has led to many efforts to exploit low-grade and refractory ironcontaining resources for ironmaking (Liu et al., 2014). The efficient utilization of the highphosphorus oolitic haematite resources in central China has received considerable attention. The available resources of this material total approximately 3.0 billion tons. The oolitic units in the ore exhibit an onionlike structure with phosphorus-containing gangue layers of 2–10 µm thickness. The best concentrate produced from these resources contains approximately 50% iron (Fe) and 0.8–1.2% phosphorus (P) (by mass) (Ai, Yu, and Wei, 2009; Song et al., 2013; Wu, Wen, and Cen, 2011). Further removal of phosphorus from these ores using conventional beneficiation methods is not possible."

"Deep mixing methods can be used economically for the construction of cut-off or excavation support walls where other systems such as traditional soldier beams and lagging walls would yie ld unsatisfactory performance, where the installation of vibrated or driven sheet piles could cause vibration induced settlements and where concrete diaphragm walls would be time consuming and expensive. The new CSM method can largely replace the more conventional single or multiple auger methods of soil mixing or jet grouting. The cutter tool is similar to a cutter used in diaphragm walls or cut-off walls and is operated with a Kelly mounted on a drill rig. With this system much deeper walls can be installed and even hard soil layers can be penetrated. CONVENTIONAL SOIL MIXINGIn 1962 Norman Liver patented an auger-based soil mixing technique that has become the basis for the world's current technology.The deep mixing method (DMM), as it is known today, is an in situ soil treatment and improvement technology where the soil is blended with binders and/or other materials that are introduced in a slurry or dry form.Typically one or more hollow, rotating mixing shafts tipped with some type of cutting tool are mounted vertically to the mast of a base carrier and are driven into the ground by hydraulic or electrically powered rotary heads. The shafts above the cutting tool may be further equipped with discontinuous auger flights and/or mixing paddles. The binder is injected through the hollow shafts to nozzles located near the cutting tool where it is mixed with the ground to form columns of treated soil.Individual column diameters range from 0,6m to 1,5m and may extend to 40 m in depth. They can be arranged individually or in contiguous or secant patterns to produce a wide range of treated soil structures on both land and marine projects. Typical configurations are: Single elements, rows of overlapping (secant) elements, grids, lattices and blocks (Fig. 1 )."

"Slag system is an indispensable part during the continuous casting process, and playing various important roles like absorbing inclusions, modifying heat transfer rate, preventing oxidation of molten steel, etc. to ensure the smooth process and excellent slab quality. However most slags contains more than 8% fluorides which tend to introduce a series of environmental and health problems. This study involves the research of the removal of fluorine through the chemical composition optimization. Through the studies of CCT, DHTT, XRD and SEM, it has been successfully founded that the crystalline phase of Ca11Si4B2O22 discovered in this study shows very similar crystallization property as Cuspidine (Ca4Si2O7F2), which is the most important crystalline phase in the current fluorine bearing slags. Moreover, the optimized free/low fluorine slag shows the opportunity to replace conventional high-fluorine mold slag for casting medium carbon steels that is regarded as the bottleneck of green slag development for continuous casting.IntroductionMold flux has been widely used in continuous casting to control heat transfer, lubricate the strand, absorb inclusions, provide insulation and prevent oxidation of the molten steel[1-3]. It usually contains fluorides, like CaF2, NaF etc., which are used to control the viscosity and solidification temperature of mold fluxes [4-5]. However, the presence of fluoride leads to corrosion of equipment, serious environmental pollution (toxic volatiles and water pollution), and high processing cost of cooling water[6-7]. Therefore, the study of low or free fluorine mold flux is of interest and attracts worldwide attention.S. Y. Choi et al. [4] used B2O3 as a substitute for cuspidine in steel B2PB2) however, B2O3 content was extremely high (up to 30 w%). Other studies have investigated F-free mold flux by adding or optimizing components as MgO, Li2O, B2O3 et al[8-11]. However, most of these focused on the melting and viscosity issues or for low or ultra-low carbon steels, where crystallization tendency is not significantly strong. Very few studies regarding to the development of low/free Fluorine mold flux for casting medium carbon (MC) steels have been conducted, due to the difficulty of the crystallization and heat transfer control without the formation of cuspidine."

"In the article carrying out technique of experiments for estimation of power efficiency of process of crushing in cone crushers «in a layer». The conformity of the granulometric characteristics of the crushed products obtained as a result of the tests, the theoretical equations for the size characteristics, and the choice of the optimal equation for the prediction of the granulometric characteristics of the final products obtained by crushing ""in a layer"". Optimization of granulometric composition of power of crushers working ""in a layer"" is carried out with the purpose of reduction of the electric power consumption at reception of a product of required quality. As a result of the experiments, dependencies are obtained, the relevance and applicability of the crushing process ""in the layer"" for obtaining crushed stone of improved quality is proved. INTRODUCTION A number of equations have been proposed for calculating the breakage energy. These include equations by Kirpichev and Kick, Rittinger and Bond (Bogdanov, Olevsky, 1982). Another equation for calculating the specific breakage work in breakage by impact and in stratum was proposed by Devyatkin (Boiko, 2003). In these equations, the breakage energy is proportional to the particle size raised to some power. In the equation proposed by Devyatkin, the ore piece thickness or the feed average diameter is used. The relationship between energy and breakage can be expressed as an equation (Lynch, 1981; Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008) where k is a coefficient characterizing the energy parameter depending on the strength of the feed, l is size in microns. The Rittinger formula is obtained for n = 2, the Kirpichev-Kick formula for n = 1, the Bond formula for n = 1.5. For n = 3 or higher, the equation describes fine and ultrafine grinding. R. Hookey proposed a formula (Lynch, 1981, Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008), where the size exponent n is substituted by a size function In all of the above equations, a single value of the feed and product size is used; for example, in the Bond equation, size is defined as the particle size of the 20% oversize (P80 and F80). However, a single size value can represent multiple distributions, making that the Bond method inappropriate for determining the size (Lynch, 1981). Describing an equation for estimating the grinding energy will allow to design the electric drive and ore preparation circuit for the given breakage method."

"Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, capable of collecting and retrieving water samples from pit lakes, tailings ponds and other mine water basins will revolutionize environmental programs by lowering sampling costs and reducing safety related risks. Costs typically include a boat and associated equipment, boat transportation, road maintenance, water safety devices, water safety training, and additional staff. Typically, the total cost can exceed $20,000 USD per sampling event (excluding lab analyses). Hazards include potential for drowning, unstable pit walls, and unconsolidated sediment surrounding tailings ponds. Hatch has developed a novel device for aerial drones which currently enables the collection of water samples from depths up to 390 ft (119 m). This system only requires a pilot, a sample technician, and a safe operations point overlooking the water body. Hatch anticipates this will reduce monitoring cost by at least 50% while improving safety, reducing staffing requirements and accelerating data acquisition. This manuscript demonstrates profiling and sample collection from a 95 ft (29 m) deep reservoir and a 377 ft (115 m) deep pit lake, and highlights the potential of this emerging technology. INTRODUCTION Working on or near water at active, closed, or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at US metal, non-metal, and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Open pit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including drowning, hypothermia, falls to the ground from the top of high walls, and rock avalanches resulting from steep, unstable pit walls. Some pit lakes are simply not easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on at least an annual basis is required to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, to verify the accuracy of numerical predictions, and to manage lake water chemistry in order to produce “treatable” influent to water treatment plants, and ultimately, produce acceptable site discharge water quality. As a product of these risks and the need for water sample, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring. This includes training personnel for “on water” duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices, and mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface, employing spotters with direct communication to emergency medical services to watch sampling activities (because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls), and utilizing redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires pit lake water samplers to hold Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel, and uses three boats for water sampling: two on the water at all times, and one on the shoreline, ready to deploy. The costs of these safety mechanisms greatly adds to the overall expense associated with pit lake sampling. Consequently, environmental programs may need to reduce the frequency of pit lake sampling in order to keep monitoring programs within an acceptable budget"

Video technology is becoming an important tool for many designers of industrial training programs. This report describes how trainers at the Minntac Mine, Mt. Iron, MN, have developed videocassettes of safe job procedures (SJP's) for training miners assigned to perform unfamiliar work tasks. All steps necessary for videocassette production, from idea to finished product, as well as the required equipment and prices, are listed and/or briefly explained. Minntac officials believe that the SJP videocassettes have contributed significantly to a reduction in mine accidents.

Each year hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system to improve safety during operation and maintenance at a concrete batch plant. INTRODUCTION Of the hundreds of machinery-related accidents occurring every year in the mining industry, incidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines continue to be amongst the most frequent [1]. A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study showed that the majority of fatal accidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines occurred at sand and gravel (38%) and stone (26%) operations. Of these accidents, entanglement in conveyor components were the most common cause of fatal accidents (48%) [2]. The same study stated that one-third of these accidents involved improper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as a contributing factor. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) acknowledged this problem, stating in a recent request for information (RFI) [3]: “Since 2007, there have been 17 fatalities related to working near or around belt conveyors, of which 76 percent were related to miners becoming entangled in belt drives, belt rollers, and discharge points. Factors that contribute to entanglement hazards include inadequate or missing guards, inadequate or an insufficient number of crossovers in strategic locations, and/or inappropriate lock out/tag out procedures. Systems that can sense a miner's presence in hazardous locations; ensure that machine guards are properly secured in place; and/or ensure machines are properly locked out and tagged out during maintenance would reduce fatalities [3].” In response to this problem, NIOSH’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is exploring the potential application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide cost-effective intelligent machine monitoring systems for improved worker safety [4, 5]. SMRD partnered with Central Pre-mix CRH Company (Central Pre-mix) to develop and install a proof-of-concept wireless IoT solution to monitor machinery and conveyors during operation and maintenance. The primary goals of the system were to provide real-time monitoring of access points and facilitate the planning and execution of LOTO procedures

This paper deals with using track-type and rubber-tired machines in the ripping and handling of overburden and ores. The techniques and proper attachments pertaining to the ripping of materials are covered in some detail. Production and relative costs of ripping, as against other methods, are covered in cases pertaining to the mining industry. The use of the refraction seismograph in predetermining the rippability of materials, including a chart relat-ing velocity to rippability, is covered. This operates on the principle that sound waves travel through subsurface materials at different velocities, depending upon the degree of consolidation of the material. It is known that the same factors that affect consolidation also affect rippability. Proper equipping of the tractor to insure maximum efficiency is also covered in some detail. Introduction T HE idea of loosening consolidated materials prior to further handling and processing is probably as old as man. The purpose of ripping is to provide fragmentation of rock and loosening of consolidated materials.

"IntroductionTHE ORE PASS raise system at the H.B. mine as contracted by the Patrick Harrison Company consisted of two raises 6 ft. by 10 ft. in section •at 60 degrees to the horizontal. No. 88-88 raise, the longer of the two, was a straight raise 690 feet long, with access only from the bottom. In addition, this raise had two branch knuckle-backs only one of which was driven by. the Patrick Harrison Company. The other, known as 88-89 raise, was 540 feet long with knuckle-backs at 280 feet and 410 feet. Its access, also, was from the bottom (see Figure 1)."

Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

"Magnetic separation techniques are used extensively in mineral processing operations. Magnetic separators are robust and relatively easy to operate. As the ore get hard and low grade, fine grinding must be required mostly to allow for a high degree of mineral liberation. These processes encounter the magnetic separation process difficulty due to a significant change in the separation behavior of particles. This study investigates the effectiveness of a novel proven wet magnetic separator for the beneficiation of Lebedinsky (Russia) iron ore achieved through developing pole arrangement and tank design. Basis on the results of multiphasic simulation of a medium intensity magnetic separator (MIMS) and dense media tank using Magnetic Design Software, a new model of the MIMS separator was developed. The main of the new MIMS separator was focused on improving separation and the decreasing the number of separators in cobber stage of the plant. The new MIMS separator was tested into a pilot plant on the received samples from Lebedinsky iron ore plant. In addition to the basis on the results of the modeling, promising results of test work and previous experiences, it was claimed the unit capacity of new separator is 33.33% more than the existing separator that could decrease the number of separators. In addition, the significant energy saving in the same operational condition could be obtained without any important adverse effect on the final concentrate quality.INTRODUCTION Magnetic separation is a long-established method for the purification and removal of substances from fluids (Augusto et al., 1999; Buck et al., 2015; Hoffmann et al., 2002; Lauda et al., 2016; Lindner et al., 2010; Podoynitsyn et al., 2016; Rashidi et al., 2016), mainly in mining processing industries ranging from steel production to coal desulfurization as commercial technology (Andres, 1994; Augusto, 2002; Svoboda, 1987). High gradient magnetic separation as an effective method for recovering of weak and fine magnetic particles separation has undergone dramatic developments, and has also achieved extensive application during this time (Svoboda and Jujita, 1987). Magnetic separation operations can be categorized into high intensity as electrical (up to 20,000 gauss), Medium intensity (2000-5000 gauss) and low intensity (less than 2000 gauss) techniques. Magnetic separators offer a simple, clean and economic way to sort magnetizable ores and minerals. After pulverization, the material is run through an inhomogeneous magnetic field, where particles of different susceptibility experience different magnetic forces. The force increases with susceptibility, magnetic field and field gradient (Jongst et al., 1984).In magnetic separation, the difference in the susceptibilities of the various particulate materials is used to separate the material flow into two or more products (Wasmuth and Unkelbach, 1991). Presently, only a few large copper refineries are able to produce Grade A cathodes from copper scrap. Today's technology needs large plants for smelting, converting or refining the main impurities and casting the anodes for electrolytic refining. A new ECUPREX® PROCESS, by-passes all pyrometallurgical operations and produces directly copper cathodes starting from copper scrap with high lead and tin contamination. Copper scrap from chopped cables, copper cements and electronic scrap are suitable feed for ECUPREX® PROCESS. This process uses a non-conventional electrolyte and produces a surprisingly high quality, smooth cathode assaying only few ppms of total metallic impurities. Bench-scale work followed by a successful mini-pilot plant run, has led to the construction of an operating pilot plant equipped with a 1,000 Ampere cell. The results of the operations of this pilot plant are presented and described in this paper.

The off gas from a smelter is cooled and dust removed in an electrostatic precipitator before approximately 95% of the sulphur dioxide (S02) is converted to sulfuric acid. However, the tail gas may need to be polished to remove the rest S02 to meet demands. A flue gas desulphurization (FGD) system, as usually applied to S02 removal on coal and oil fired Power Station, is suitable for polishing tail gases from copper smelters. The ALSTOM Seawater FGD process makes use of the alkalinity in the seawater to absorb and neutralize S02. Before being returned to the sea, the seawater is treated to comply with environmental regulations. As the ALSTOM Seawater FGD process uses no reagent and produces no byproduct, it is extremely cost-effective for coastal installations. The first SWFGD plant started operation in 1968. Over 60 of these units have been installed worldwide. The ALSTOM Seawater FGD process removes S02 from flue gas flows corresponding to a total of 70,000,000 Nm3 /h. Suitable for thermal power stations, smelters and oil refineries, ALSTOM Seawater FGD plants efficiently treats flue gases in the range of 300,000 Nm3/h to 2, 700,000 Nm3 /h per FGD plant, containing 20 - 6,500 ppm of S02.

One of the main outcomes of a capital project is the reliability of a new plant, system or equipment. During 20 years of experience working in various capital projects for the mining industry, the author experienced failures which have caused significant losses to Owners, in many cases amounting to millions of dollars and almost jeopardizing entire projects. Often, failures were related to faulty design, shop fabrication and/or construction. Therefore, significant opportunities exist in the Mining Industry to improve the success rate of capital projects, improve on-line time at start-up, minimize the occurrence of unplanned maintenance due to equipment failures, and all this with positive contribution to health and safety. This paper presents some examples of failures and how they could have been prevented by proper Quality Assurance methodology. It also discusses some of the main challenges in the implementation of such methodology, including awareness of the Materials discipline and availability of trained Engineers.

Principles of ecologically friendly geo-technologies construction are formulated on the basis of the works of the leading scientists in the field of rational processing of mineral resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of these concepts is a new direction in rotational disintegration of mineral and technogenic raw material with the purpose of effective subsequent enrichment. A large amount of practical experience has been accumulated in the industry on selective destruction by application of vibrational method on initial material with consideration of its physical-mechanical properties and mineral structure. This method is successfully realised in a conic inertial pulverisation devices constructed by Mekhanobr Institute (St. Petersburg). A new construction of conical-inertial pulverisation with a modification of disintegration force has been developed recently at Mekhanobr Institute. It allows, in some cases, to increase selectivity of subdivision and to avoid over-disintegration. Advantages of “wet” subdivision methods in conic inertial disintegration devices are proved. The efficiency of such subdivision can be increased due to rational use of the phenomenon of a dislocation-dynamic diffusion. Its advantage is proved by the effect on disintegrated material by frequency-modulated variable electrical fields of low power. It was shown in industrial conditions, that the productivity of the spherical mill can be increased by 10 %, and that it also prevents ecologically harmful surface active substances (SAS) in milling zone and it reduces the dust content in the air. The techniques of tentative estimation of efficiency of various proceedings technogenic materials and their classification are created. The scientific fundaments of rational, ecologically friendly technology of processing and regeneration of various kinds of technogenic raw material are developed. A number of effective technologies on processing of wastes is developed and inculcated in concentration factories and metallurgical factories.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. In addition, future geomet programs will focus on generating data from all available drill core programs, not just dedicated geomet drill holes, and will incorporate new types of data, such as hyper-spectral information, for improved geometallurgical estimation.CITATION:Wright, B, Carroll, T, Flanagan, M, Sua, T and Van Dijken, B, 2013. A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect.
