The Slocan mining camp in Kootenay district; British Columbia; has long been noted for the great number of its silver-bearing deposits; and for the success that has; in many instances; attended their development. The orebearing area lies east of Slocan lake and mainly within a radius of 6 to 8 miles of the mining town of Sandon. Within this limited area 135 or more properties have shipped ore in quantities of from 100 tons or less to more than 500; 000 tons; and with a total value in silver; lead; and zinc ranging from a few hundred dollars to well over $10; 000; 000. Of the three metals; silver has easily ranked first in value; with lead second and zinc third. Zinc production; however; made slow progress in the early years; and with . the exception of the Lucky Jim mine; and a few others where high-grade ore could be readily hand-sorted; was a detriment to the silver-lead ores until improved methods of separation enabled it to take an important place in the mineral production of the Slocan.

Traditional mineral processing techniques are more and more difficult to recover the increasingly low grade phosphate ores today. Although bioleaching method has been attempted to process low grade ores in hydrometallurgical field due to economical and environmental reason, it has been hardly used in leaching phosphate ore at home and abroad. Strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were collected and separated from the acid drainage of a coal mine in Anhui province of China. Ultraviolet irradiation and Microwave inducement were applied to the bacterial cultivation process to produce strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithi-obacillus ferrooxidans able to tolerate extremely low pH conditions and generate sulphuric acid by oxidizing elemental sulfur or sulphide and the mutagenesis can achieve higher leaching rate. The bioleaching result will improve more by the addition of Tween series surfactants.

"Tell us how you got involved in mining and about your career path.My dad was a coal miner and my uncle was a metallurgist, so when I enrolled at Penn State’s New Kensington Campus, I chose the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences — exact majors didn’t get picked till the end of your sophomore year. Penn State New Ken had an associate degree in mining program and one of the guys in my carpool was going to take Mining 30 in the evening and the other guy (mechanical engineer) was also able to take an evening class. I didn’t want to break up the carpool, so I took Mining 30, complete with essay tests. I could write, so I did well, and the professor said I should go into mining engineering. Fast forward to the end of the next term at University Park, and I realized there wasn’t enough chemistry in mining. Switching to metallurgy would have meant another term at that point, so Dr. Lovell, my advisor, trotted me down the hall and to the next building and said I was a mineral processor. That stuck. I was a summer student at U.S. Steel Research between my junior and senior year and they paid for my master’s degree — all about clay and macerals in coal flotation. During that time, the steel industry tanked, and I thought a Ph.D. would be a good idea — I could always teach at the university level if I had those credentials. The Electric Power Research Institute had a Coal Cleaning Test Facility in Homer City, PA, and I conducted my Ph.D. research on rate and residence time in conventional coal froth flotation cells there and at a local cleaning plant. I went to work at the test facility in 1987 (later CQ Inc.) and stayed there until I started PrepTech Inc. in 1997. PrepTech offers some consulting services for coal cleaning plants and sells mineral processing equipment, mostly to coal companies. I can’t believe it’s been 21 years.And what about your SME career?Of course, I was a student SME member at Penn State. We used many of the SME books in class, so who wouldn’t want the student discount? While in Homer City, I became involved with the Appalachian Plateau Subsection of the Pittsburgh Section. We’d hold quarterly meetings with interesting speakers and had good attendance. I was the secretary. I’m still the secretary and also get the bank statements. We’ll need to close that out some time, but I guess I’ve been hoping for resurgence in the Indiana/Cambria/ Somerset area."

"INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. Until June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C, the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. In order to increase the production, and to reduce its cost, the Anthracite Fuel Company was compelled to change most of its •plant, and to erect more powerful machinery, producing lumps of a larger size, almost twice the size of the lumps made previously by the same company. The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcroppings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined. Late in 1959, following a slightly improved position in the tungsten market, company management decided that, by changing the mining method, the operation could be economically feasible. The major premise in this decision was that a reduction of from 25 to 30% of the mining costs could be achieved by the conversion of the mining method from square-sets to horizontal cut and fill. Reopening of the mine began in February 1960, Full production has now been reached and overall mine productivity has been doubled.

Refdist is a simple but valid approach to planning or analyzing a test-vs-control plant trial that uses accumulated plant performance data to calculate objective criteria for judging the trial outcome. Refdist calculations and results are explained and illustrated with data typical of the mining industry. Findings from a simulation study of Refdist statistical properties are reported. Suggestions for dealing with messy data situations are offered.

Large-scale land reclamation has been undertaken in Singapore since the 1960s. In the early years, the fill materials excavated from the hills. In recent years, sea sand is the main source of the fill materials. The contractors used to import the sea sand from the neighbouring countries such as Indonesia. However, in early 2000, the sea sand import from Indonesia and Malaysia was banned. Cambodia, Myanmar, and Philippine therefore became the alternative sources for sea sand. Distance between the jobsite and these countries is over 1,200 km, and transporting sea sand from these areas became a critical issue that could affect the contractor?s performance. Figuring out the right combination of transportation means for a longdistance sand transportation would be challenging because of uncertain situations. We developed a stochastic simulation model, using ARENA, to figure out the right quantity of small-size barges, bulk carriers, and loading/unloading equipment, which could help project managers yield the most production for sand transportation. This paper presents how we developed the simulation model, how it was applied to figure out the optimum combination among various size barges, different bulk carriers, and various types of loading/unloading equipment, for the sand transportation project in Singapore.

Dewatering of mine waste slurries has been successfully accomplished by the proper use of polymers in flocculating the fine particulate matter suspended in the slurry streams. Conventional treatment of fine waste slurries usually involves some form of impoundment treatment or storage. These impoundments present unique environmental problems. When filled to capacity, the impoundments are usually unloaded with a dragline and transported to a separate disposal area. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted dewatering studies utilizing polymer technology in combination with a mobile field test unit designed by the Bureau. The purpose of these studies was to determine if the fine waste slurry from the mining operation could be successfully dewatered. Results of the investigation have shown that the slurry can be dewatered successfully. The dewatered products obtained from the tests ranged from 45 to 50pct solids. This material continued to dewater, approaching 70 pct solids within 24 h, and could be easily handled using conventional transportation equipment including conveyor belts.

The Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has developed a field test unit (FTU) which dewaters mine and/or mineral processing by-product slurries. The feed material (by-product slurry) is mixed with a known quantity and specific type of synthetic polymer (usually a polyacrylamide) to induce flocculation in a continuous operation. The flocculated material passes over a specific number and size of slotted stationary screens which separates the flocculated solid material from the "clean" water. The "static screens" are positioned at a fixed angle to maximize flow capacity and capture of the solids content. An investigation was conducted at an industrial crushed stone operation located near Birmingham, AL, to determine if the Bureau's FTU could successfully dewater the waste slurry generated during grinding and sizing operations at this facility. The investigation showed that waste slurries could be dewatered to 50 pct solids, at a polymer cost of approximately $0.85/ton of dry solids treated, and resulted in approximately 85 to 95 pct solids recovery. The dewatered material continued to consolidate and reached 69 pct solids in 24 h. Presently, the waste slurry generated at this facility is discarded into impoundments. However, this research has identified the recovered waste as an economically marketable product.

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

An article entitled "The Rule of the Geologist in the Industrial Mineral Field" by G. R. Gullet, was published in the August, 1967, issue of the Canadian Mining Journal. Mr. Gullet defined industrial minerals as follows: "Industrial minerals are largely non-metallic minerals and rocks that find value because of their physical or chemical properties." This definition is brief, but all-inclusive. Mr. Gullet continues, "They include all useful minerals and mineral commodities except those used as fuels and those from which metals are extracted. Factors in the evaluation of an industrial mineral deposit are generally as different from those used in the evaluation of a metal deposit as is the assessment of a potential oil field. The key to the successful development of an industrial mineral, deposit is more often a balance of accessibility, transport, and proximity to markets than to any natural quality advantage of the deposit itself."

Fly ash from four sources and in certain proportions was shown to assist chemical coagulation of turbid water and settling of chemically induced floc. Fly ash reduced the time required to form the first visible floc, promoted more uniform flocs about 2 mm in diameter, and increased the mean settling rate of floc particles. Also, the addition of fly ash produced denser sludges than those obtained with alum alone. Final turbidities were independent of fly ash particle size and carbon content. Optimum proportions of fly ash additive are given.

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. The I-Corps™ methods have been used to discover the prevailing ideas on sampling in various industries.I-Corps™ also teaches how to present ideas to investors; another significant challenge for a scientist.
