Introduction The Horne mine, the property of Noranda Mines, Limited, has in the last six years become one of Canada's leading gold and copper producers. Since the smelter was blown-in during December, 1927, up to the end of 1933, it has produced approximately 1,200,000 oz. of gold and 35O,OOO,OOO lb. of copper. The property is situated within an area occupied entirely by pre-Cambrian rocks and characterized by the complexity of rock types and structures common in such terrain. But apart from this the mine also presents other features of unusual interest in the size, number, and variety of the ore-bodies, the mineralogical associations, and the rather exceptional values both in gold and copper. It is not surprising, therefore, that a study of the geology of the mine should bring to light many interesting problems. The present paper summarizes, as concisely as possible, the results of such a study. Actually, it is a much abridged version of a more comprehensive and detailed paper completed by the writer a year ago (1), but embodying certain corrections and additional data made possible as a result of further development at the mine and of field work carried out during the summer of 1933. Owing to limitations of space, the paper is, in the main, a presentation of conclusions arrived at in the course of the study. Much of the supporting evidence cited in the thesis referred to has, of necessity, been omitted here.

At the Groveland mine iron ore is mined by open-pit methods and concentrated by means of spirals and flotation. A brief history of the mine and its early development is given. The ore deposit is described, with emphasis on those physical characteristics that affect the choice of mining and milling methods. This literature study of methods for desulfurizing residual fuel oil was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The sulfur compounds in residual fuels are believed to consist chiefly of condensed thiophenes and other polycyclic sulfur compounds. Hydrodesulfurization appears to be the most promising method for desulfurizing these oils and is the only method applicable to all types of sulfur compounds. There are indications in the literature that hydrodesulfurization without hydrocracking of residual oils may require higher pressures than used in present desulfurization processes, but no cost data and little experimental data are available on the higher pressure operation. Literature proposals for hydrogenating residual oils and heavy crude oils are exclusively for hydrocracking the oils to lower boiling products with accompanying partial desulfurization of the residual fuel fraction. Costs of the hydrocracking operations appear the closest available to probable costs of hydrodesulfurizing the oils, and have been reported (in 1955 to 1957) as $500 to $840 investment cost per daily barrel of capacity, with total operating costs of 70 cents to $1.10 per barrel.

A modified transpiration reactor was used to measure the composition of the equilibrium gas phase formed above compounds in the Hg-O-S system at high temperatures (600 to 900K). A thermodynamic database {(AGo°f AH°t. AS°t)} for-HgO, HgS, HgSO4, Hg2SO4, HgSO4?HgO, and HgSO4?2HgO was developed based on the experimental results. Prior to this study, only estimated data were available in the literature for the sulfates and oxysulfates at temperatures above 298K. A series of vapor pressure' stability diagrams were constructed from 473 to 973K with isobars of Hg(g), HgO(g), S2(g), and SO3(g). These diagrams were found to be significantly different than those available previously and do provide insight to the phase relations of importance during the thermal processing of Hg-containing wastes. The thermodynamic results were used to conduct a series of Gibbs energy minimization calculations for a thermal processor' afterburner system for the treatment of HgS-containing wastes. The retention of Hg in the discharge calcine was examined as a function of temperature and excess air. Hg was found to report to the calcine as HgSO4, Hg2SO4, or HgSO4 HgO depending on the process conditions, and Hg retention occurs at temperatures as high as 930K. The precipitation of Hg-containing phases from cooled afterburner discharge gas starts at approximately 900K and the cooling of the gas an additional 30K (to 870K) results in over 50% of the Hg being preCipitated as HgS04?HgO. It was also determined that for small amounts of Hg present in sulfide concentrates during roasting, the Hg will be retained as HgSO4 or HgSO4?HgO at temperatures as high as 870K.

This year of 1926 marks the 40th. anniversary of nickel mining in Canada. Although the first nickel mine of the Sudbury basin was discovered in 1883, it was not until 1886 that the Canadian Copper Company was organized and actually began to mine copper-nickel ore from the Lady McDonald, Stobie and Evans mines. The intervening years have witnessed some exceedingly interesting nickel history, particularly interesting and gratifying as well to Canadians. Forty years ago, at the inception of Canadian nickel mining, the world's consumption of that metal was about 1000 tons per annum and this was supplied largely from New Caledonia ores refined in France. This nickel was used principally for the production of nickel-silver, coinage alloys, and for nickel-plating. No processes were then known for refining the Sudbury ores nor for the separation of copper from nickel. Consequently, the pioneers in Canadian nickel mining faced the double problem of finding a method of treating their ores, and of finding a market for the nickel when and if they could extract it.

This report describes the elemental characterization of chromite and related materials at the Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center. Analytical methods for determining the major constituents, representing extensive experience, refinement, and development, are described and fully annotated. This presentation should allow other laboratories to use these methods and obtain comparable results with a minimum of time needed for familiarization with individual methods.

Despits its high melting point (2,135° C.), resistance to attack by molten metals, and its hardness (8), spinel (MgO?Al203) synthesized by the fusion of alumina (Al 2 0.) and magnesia (MgO) is not used on a large scale as a commercial furnace lining, mainly because of the prohibitive cost. This investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was prompted by the possibility of producing synthetic spinel from inexpensive raw materials by methods outlined in U.S. Patent 2,029,773, "Process for Obtaining Products Containing Spinets," dated February 4, 1936. In this patent Ture B. Haglund described a process for recovering crystalline spinels from melts in the system Mg0?Al203-2CaO-SiO2, a system well suited to the use of starting materials such as dolomite CaMg(C03)2, olivine [2(Mg?Fe)0.Si02], and bauxite (Al203?2H20) which are abundant in the southeastern United States. Compositions, ranging from a low content in the eutectic mixture of 35 percent spinal and 65 percent dicalcium silicate (2 CaO?SiO2) to a high of 75 percent spinel and 25 percent dicalcium silicate, were fused in electric furnaces of the arc-resistance and internal-resistance types. So long as members of the system were in proper chemical balance, "dusting" slags could be produced over the entire range of spinel concentration.

THE solid fuel industry, especially that branch represented by bituminous coal, is gradually becoming aware of its ? paramount importance in a world where there is an ever increasing demand for the products of a mechanical age. In practically every process of manufacture, the necessity for energy in some form is being multiplied. Some of that prime energy is derived from water power-hydro-electric schemes, flood control schemes, etc. - but often the electrical energy thus developed is generated at great distances from the load centres, requiring long transmission lines with consequent transformer and transmission losses. A few plants have harnessed the tidal power of the seas and one has harnessed the energy of the wind in a modern manner. All of these schemes are dependent on certain natural geographical, hydrographical, and physical advantages of terrain, as well as an adequate area of consumption of the energy developed. If flood control is the primary object, then power generation is a by-product; and the economics of large capital expenditure on power generating equipment must be considered in that light.

The first decade of the 21st century was one of fundamentally changed dynamics for the minerals industry. Following intense globalization commencing in the late 20th century production is now concentrated into large businesses that can compete across geography in diverse commodities. Asian industrialization and urbanization is now the main driver of growth in demand for energy and materials. Demand for the output of these industries has risen sharply, reversing decade long trends to reduced real commodity prices. Supply responded with expansions of existing mining and processing operations, and large investment in new resource development. Development of new, lower grade or more remote resources was stimulated. Resource development by global entities in frontier environments reinforced the importance of effective forms of social contract, and of stronger environmental performance. The worst economic shock in decades provoked no significant pause despite large impacts on corporate ownership. State owned enterprises commenced unprecedented foreign direct investment in minerals and energy resources. A thrust towards resource nationalism re-emerged as governments sought to ensure that the export of state owned resources contributes more strongly to government revenue, reducing the burden of trade in scarce resources on other trade-exposed sectors. The unprecedented combination of forces at work has made future predictions difficult, with day-by-day volatility in anticipated corporate fortunes, and investment plans. The challenge for process innovation (and for exploration) has been to keep up, maintaining a lid on costs as lower grade and more challenging ore bodies are brought on quickly in a context of competition for land use, community expectations and continued care for natural and living environments. While new projects have provided the necessary platforms for implementation of innovative approaches, there is evidence that a gap may have emerged between the pace of growth and the pace of innovation. The history of a century of process innovation in the context of growth of output, declining resource grades and commodity prices is presented. The necessary conditions for accelerated process innovation are considered, and future needs and approaches are discussed. Keywords: process innovation, resource development

1. The investigation shows that the Wilder (locally known as the Bon Air No. 2) is the only known bed of commercial importance in Putnam County, although at least 5 coal horizons are known. All of the coal production now reported comes from this bed, which is found In a basin with no known coal outcrops. Further drilling in the east end of the basin should disclose the location of the eastern end of the axial trough and the lateral extent of the basin in Putnam County and adjoining areas in Cumberland County. Continuity of this deposit with that in the area in Putnam County north of Monterey is not conclusively established but may exist. 2 Known (measured plus indicated) reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot in place, are estimated at 29 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 28 million tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. All born coal reserves in Putnam County me under less than 400 feet of overburden.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to mineral industries' mines, quarries, and plants that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove that efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Limestone, including dolomite, is the most widely used of all rocks - nearly 300 million tons annually in the United States alone. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of localities. Because of its attractiveness, substantiality, and durability it is employed extensively as a building stone. In crushed and broken form it is used for concrete aggregate and railroad ballast and in highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, and a host of chemical and industrial processes. This paper proposes to furnish general information on the origin and occurrence of limestone and dolomite, chief production centers, major uses, and methods of quarrying and preparing stone for market. Fine-sized mineral wastes discarded by ore milling plants require stabilization to prevent air and water pollution. Stabilization has been attained by physical, chemical, vegetative, and combination procedures. Vegetative reclamation is preferred to physical and chemical stabilization but is diffi¬cult to achieve because the wastes are sterile, contain deleterious inorganic salts, and lack the essential nutrients and physical characteristics required for sustaining vegetative growth. Methods now have been developed for attain¬ing vegetative growth on all but excessively acidic, basic, or saline tailings at costs ranging from $120 to $650 per acre. The cost for stabilizing tail¬ings requiring more intensive treatment techniques may range upward to $1,750 per acre. This report summarizes procedures developed by the Bureau of Mines and industry for vegetating amenable tailings, lists costs for the various processes, and suggests procedures that may be applicable for stabilizing saline and pyrite-containing tailings. Ridged planting beds, drip irrigation, and deep-furrow planting techniques are suggested for stabilizing saline wastes. A combination of mill tailings and sewage sludge can be used for pro¬ducing synthetic soils, and layers of sewage sludge buried under a layer of tailings offer promise of inhibiting acid formation from oxidation of sulfides in mineral wastes.

To determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions, a demonstration of dozer blades specifically designed for recontouring mine spoil was conducted at an East Texas surface coal mine. The specialized equipment included a 48-foot angle blade, a modified 24-foot "U" blade, a 13-foot deep "U" blade, and a 24-foot grading bar. Both the 4b-foot and the 24-foot "U" blades were mounted in a two-tractor, single-operator configuration. To meet flotation problems common in this mining region, a 22-foot lightweight blade was developed and demonstrated for use on a 400-430 hp tractor. The demonstration involved 1,185 acres and showed a 50% reduction in reclamation costs and a 47% reduction in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. Improved equipment, trained operators, good supervision, and improved monitoring techniques contributed to the savings. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here along with guidelines for application of findings.

The northeastern United States embraces that area of the Appalachian Mountains, and adjacent territory, beginning on the south at the Potomac River. It thus extends from the flat-lying Paleozoic terrane of the Appalachian plateau on the west, across the folded Paleozoics of the Great Valley and adjacent ridges (Paleozoic and Precambrian), over the Piedmont and New England metamorphic complex (mixed Paleozoic and igenous rocks), broken by the great Triassic rift remnants, onto the subdued coastal plain of Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. Although not noted as a metal mining region, the area does contain numerous substantial and several outstanding mines, chiefly of the more prosaic metals, particularly iron, zinc, and copper, as well as many minor occurrences of these and a few additional items. These deposits occur to some extent in every subdivision of the area. The region to date (1966) has produced almost 500,000,000 tons of medium to lowgrade iron ore, especially magnetite, including ilmenitic magnetite; 50,000,000 tons of highgrade zinc ore; and 5,000,000 tons of lowgrade copper. In the past, it has yielded small amounts of chromite and nickel, and at present is a large producer of titanium. Precious metals are conspicuously absent, and so also are the Tertiary or Mesozoic igneous phenomena so commonly associated with mines of the West. Hence, a survey of the extensive mineralization · of this region should be instructive

Fluorspar is one of the most important nonmetallic minerals and is used extensively in the metallurgical, ceramic, cement, and chemical industries. The steel industry consumes most of it, but as the Mineral is the chief source of fluorine, it is becoming increasingly valuable to the chemical industry in the production of fluorine compounds. The development of nontoxic organic fluorides for use as refrigerants in mechanical refrigeration and air-conditioning units illustrates the increasing use of fluorspar in the chemical industry. Most domestic flurospar comes from deposits in the Illinois-Kentucky district, which centers around Rosiclare, Ill. About a dozen companies operate in the district, which comprises parts of Pope and Hardin Counties in southern Illinois and Crittenden, Livingston, and Caldrell Counties in western Kentucky. According to the latest available statistics, this district supplied 165,960 short tons of fluorspar in 1937, compared with the total domestic production of 151,230 tons. Imports totaled 37,063 tons.
