The excavator selection process is quite complex due to the large number of influencing factors, many of these are variable and difficult to accurately define. The majority of mining companies prepare a tender of general specifications and suppliers will then match a product to those specifications. The mining company will then evaluate the tenders on the basis of the best available deal. In this paper, the importance of open pit excavator selection in terms of its impact on operating costs is analysed and discussed. A rigorous process for selection is then outlined.

Representative collections of recent dolomites, and of samples concentrated by leaching-out of coexisting magnesian calcites, provide grounds for appraisal of the compositions and cation ordering in recent dolomitized sediments. Unit cell volumes for near-stoichiometric compositions exceed those of ordered dolomite and increase as the departures from regular cation order became more pronounced. Infrared absorption maxima of disordered examples occur at perceptibly lower frequencies. Stable isotope ratios indicate that best ordered examples formed in highly saline environments. Present observations are qualitatively reconciled with data from synthetic products described by other authors.

There are many grinding schools in the mining world, which claim their grinding method to be the best possible - and still the methods concerned vary a great deal. Some of them have multi- stage crushing and only single stage grinding while in others crushing may be nominal, but grinding can be very complicated. - In this presentation firstly the nine most common comminution circuits will be analyzed. Then results from a pilot scale test series will be reviewed, in which nickel ore ground by four different comminution methods was fed to a common flotation treatment.

Matching the productivity gains of continuous mining machines with the increasing performance levels achieved by longwall units has required creative thinking to assure that development is completed in time for uninterrupted longwall production. By using management information systems to coordinate support operations, the most productive planning decisions can be made. This paper focuses on the role of computer technology tools in achieving improved productivity from both longwall and continuous miner sections. Safety management can best be described as how each company deals with the control of hazards (human or mechanical) to reduce costly accidents and employee injury caused by accidents. Properly used, effective safety management can mean the difference between being a highly productive, cost-efficient operation or one that "walks the fence," that is less productive with higher product costs. At Utah Power & Light Co's mining division, effective safety management has been used as tool to achieve this difference and remains as the number one priority to maintaining that difference.

The construction of a major sewerage scheme requiring 15.3 km of 5.5m excavated diameter tunnel in basalt, mixed and soft ground has been undertaken by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. A double shielded Tunnel Boring Machine was selected to excavate 13.7 km of basalt and mixed ground. Advanced methods for recording operational data on the TBM were introduced. Progress to date has shown that the TBM can excavate rock very effectively with a best weekly production of 178.8m; soft ground has been encountered and successfully handled.

It cannot be said that the development of processes for roasting in Utah has been evolutionary. Some of the best systems were contemporaneons with smelting here, and one of the most primitive methods, pile roasting, is still entrenched, to the exclusion of all others, at one works. This is certainly not because we have not had sulphur, in place and out of place, to contend with, but rather because roasting has not been a necessity, we having, like most other smelting districts in America, a good share of oxidized ores.

A comparison of analytical models used to describe deposition in the first generation of lung bifurcations is presented. In order to allow testing of the mathematical models, experimental data were obtained from radon daughter deposition in simplified lung bifurcations. The experimental data for particles deposited by diffusional mechanisms is best described by the assumption of a thin concentration boundary layer at the entrance of a right circular tube. Other more complex models do not accurately describe the deposition of submicron particles. The angle of bifurcation was found to have a minor effect on deposition.

Low temperature heat capacities of pentaerythritol [PE: C(CH2OH)4], pentaglycerine [PG: (CH3)C(CH2OH)3], and 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol [AMPL: (NH2)(CH3)C(CH2OH)2]have been determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 3 K to 300 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported heat capacity measurement below 280 K for PE and AMPL. The Debye temperatures for these organic crystals have also been determined and compared with other alcohol derivatives of neopentane.

Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual model fitting is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. Many interactive methods are described, which are adapted to modeling semivariogram in one-, two-, or three- dimensional environments.

An overview of the challenges encountered at the Freeport McMoRan El Paso Copper Refinery with higher concentrations of antimony electrolyte will be shared. The observations will cover the detrimental effects on copper starting sheets, commercial cathodes and anode slimes. The study will show negative effects on quality and productivity. Experimental work will utilize a test cell to study the effects on electrolytes by different Antimony, Arsenic concentration and anode molar ratio. Best practices will be shared for producing high quality cathodes while effectively managing the detrimental effects of higher antimony electrolyte.

The major consideration in any management and engineering decision is the economic evaluation of factors. The right decision is the best cost decision, provided of course that it is the safest. Changes, improvements, and advances in mining technology, as in any business, come about through the pressure of economics in combination with the inventiveness and engineering abilities of efficient mine operators. Leaching of uranium in situ from sandstone deposits with ammonium carbonate solution containing dissolved oxygen occurs rapidly compared with the leaching of the bulk of the sulfur present as FeS2. However, because of their high reducing capacity and their relative abundance, the FeS2 minerals consume the bulk of the oxidant. A pressure leach apparatus was constructed that permitted measuring oxygen consumption by FeS2, best described by a first-order reaction. The experimental rate constants for various cores are roughly proportional to their FeS2 contents.

Waterjets and diamond wire saws have raised the productivity and lowered the cost in dimensional granite quarries. While the cost of diamond wire sawing is substantially lower than waterjet, the judicial use of the waterjet can simplify and improve the overall operating efficiency and predictability. Granite is the hardest commercial stone and only the gem-stones garnet and diamonds are harder. The introduction of industrial diamonds has made it possible to quarry and process granite at costs equal to or less than other natural stones – making granite, with its superior properties, the best value available.

Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. The Zapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level. However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy.
