Stawell Gold Mines Pty Ltd operates two underground decline mines within the township of Stawell. An active exploration program and commitment by owners to improving the ore reserves has led to an improved mine life and reduced operating costs since the purchase of the operation by Mining Project Investors and Pittston Mineral Ventures in late-1992. Over the past six years of operation a cumulative 1 150 000 ounces of gold have been added to the mineral inventory. An improved geological understanding of the orebody has evolved over time increasing the ore reserves and allowing the development of long-term plans for the mines future. This has enabled important capital decisions to be made providing the impetus for improved productivity and thereby reduced operating costs. Co-operative mine planning and mine geology utilising best practice geological systems have enabled the effective extraction of a structurally complex and mineralogically varied deposit within a rural Victorian township. Detailed metallurgical research has improved the function of an aged and poorly designed circuit to boost the mill capacity whilst also improving the metallurgical recovery. The combination of metallurgical expertise and an understanding of the geological setting enable an effective control of metallurgical recovery.

The aim of this work was to heat treat and characterize sintered valve seat inserts (VSI). The powder metallurgy route was the only way found to substitute cobalt and lead, used in the VSI original alloy, due to their high cost and toxicological effect, respectively. The studied VSI was obtained with AISI M2 high-speed steel powder mixed with iron powder and other additives such as manganese sulphide, graphite, zinc stearate, carbides and copper, which was added by metallic infiltration. All the VSI were air quenched and double tempered, for one hour each, at seven different equidistantly temperatures, ranging from 100 °C up to 700 °C. The physical and mechanical properties were evaluated by means of the VSI apparent density, apparent hardness and crush radial strength. The chemical composition was determined through gas analysis, for the light elements such as carbon and sulfur, and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry for other elements. Microstructural characterization was performed with the support of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Regarding the VSI final application, the best results were achieved with the inserts air quenched and double tempered at 600 °C.

The recovery of rare earth metals from secondary sources has attracted much attention due to their ever expanding demand in the high-tech industry. The studies reported here focus on the hydrometallurgical recovery of lanthanum and cerium from spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts in a two-step process: leaching with nitric acid and solvent extraction by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The experiments show a high dissolution yield of about 93% lanthanum and 42% cerium in a single leaching step with 2 M (126 g/L) HNO3 at 80 °C; only 11% aluminum has been dissolved simultaneously. In the subsequent solvent extraction step the best results for this leach liquor could be achieved using a 1:1 mixture of 25% (v/v) TBP (0.92 M) and 25% (v/v) D2EHPA (0.76 M) in n-decane without the need for any pH adjustment. In that case La(III) and Ce(III) can be extracted with 60% and 74% yield respectively in one stage from the majority of accompanying matrix elements. In particular no extraction of Al(III) could be observed under these conditions.

The reinforcement of the annual copper production capacity to 330,000 metric tons has been attained at Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery in 1991, which is one of the largest and most efficient custom smelters in the world. Many operational improvements and technology developments have realized the increase of smelting and refining capacity without adding main facilities to the existing process. The blister copper refining and anode casting process is composed of two 400 tonnes anode furnaces and one double-wheeled casting machine with the capacity of 80 tonnes per hour. The great innovations in this process such as the finding of essential issue on the extending of anode-mould life and the development of a new anode-mould casting machine have raised the operation efficiency by 14% Now, the process is producing 38,500 tonnes per month of best quality anode in well- controlled working condition, and anode productivity per worker increased by 52%. The progress in extending anode-mould life, the mechanism of the new anode-mould casting machine and the increase of efficiency in butane reduction, that were the principal parts of many technological improvements, are described in the present paper, including some operation results.

Coal has been hydrogenated in Germany on a lather extensive scale for the past 20 years, but the process is new to the United States. Although pressures up to 15,000 pounds per square inch have been employed on commercial scale in the synthesis of anhydrous ammonia, and there is evidence that valves, tubing, and equipment have been developed recently up to 30,000 p.s.i. working pressure at moderately elevated temperatures for limited industrial production of plastics, such pressure ranges are unusual in American industry, and equipment designed for them is not commonly available. In the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., 10,000 p.s.i. operating pressures are combined with temperatures up to 1,000° F., and the materials to be processed under these conditions range from gases to mixtures of viscous liquids containing high percentages of abrasive solid particles. These service conditions presented unusual engineering problems requiring thorough investigation, Limited financial resources arid rigid time schedules inherent in the synthetic liquid fuels act often forced decisions before the best answer to a problem could be developed. Sometimes the ideal technical solution proved to be beyond the financial limitations of the demonstration-plant program.

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed: The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation. This paper is an update of that which the authors prepared for the Infacon X ferro-alloys conference.

Virtually zero gas emission smelting is promoted as a means for securing environmental advantages and the general public’s acceptance. Concerns about climate change will increasingly make it more difficult for new primary metals projects to come to fruition unless greenhouse gas emissions are decreased. Assuming a sustainable market for sulphuric acid is not locally available, the next best option is high temperature reaction of strong SO2 with limestone or dolomite. This is followed by CO2 liquefaction and disposal either underground or in the deep ocean. The Voisey’s Bay nickel project is cited as an example where appropriate location of a new smelter close to large dolomite or limestone deposits would lead to a virtually zero gas emission operation. Most of the electrical energy required for producing technically pure oxygen and for liquefying CO2 and transporting it to disposal can be derived from smelting a bulk sulphide concentrate and then reacting SO2 at high temperature. Provided the smelter gases are properly cleaned before sulphur fixation, the sulphated stone should be uncontaminated and environmentally benign and possibly of use in the building and construction industry.

The article deals with stabilisation and regeneration of Ce02 and Ce02/Zr02 based Pt water gas shift catalysts, subject to high initial deactivation. The reaction gas species effect on the catalyst deactivation was investigated by H2-TPR. Activity measurements enabled the effect of different promoters, some added to the Ce02 based catalysts and some to the Ce02/Zr02 based Pt catalysts, to be investigated. The catalysts were also characterised by BET and CO-TPR. Deactivated catalysts activity was restored by using various regeneration methods. Of the two selected carriers the Ce02/Zr02 based Pt catalyst showed the highest resilience to deactivation. For the two different carriers, Ce02 and Ce02/Zr02, Wand Re were the best promoters when the catalyst was subject to deactivation. Experiments with Hr TPR indicate a fast initial change in the platinum oxides concentration and composition. The CO-TPR was used to make conclusions about the various regeneration effects of water and oxygen on the catalyst. Finally it is suggested that not one deactivation mechanism is possible and which mechanism that dominates is dependant on the catalyst and the reaction gas composition.

Blastings always generates induced vibrations through seismic wave, these are lost energy from the blasting and therefore causing the disturbance of slopes and structures near the blast source. Most of the components of an open pit mine have to reach a physical stability, especially during its closure process. Aiming to develop a vibration prediction model using the historical records from an open pit mine located on Peru, this research has two main focuses depending on the distance from the blast source to the structure: to protect the final slopes and to protect the villagers houses. Both are based on the Devine model of the Square Root Scaled Distance (SRSD) to predict the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV). The Mid field model, where is found mainly final slopes from the pit, limited by the failure criteria of McKenzie based on the geo mechanical properties of the rock mass. The Far field model ranges distances where are located the most community households, limited by the German rule DIN 4150 for highly sensitive structures. Both scenarios resulted on a distribution abacus to limit the weight of used explosives to get the best operational advantage and structure safety.

Two hundred years ago next April, our forebears embarked upon the difficult path to national independence. They succeeded, and shook off the yoke of foreign domination. In the ensuing two centuries, the country was mobilized several times to protect that political and economic independence from foreign domination. These efforts were also successful. Thus, as we stand here on the threshold of our third century of political independence, we can thank previous generations and congratulate ourselves for establishing and maintaining the world's oldest republic. Now -- once again -- the United States faces the challenge of foreign intervention into our economy. This time the battleground is resource avail- ability. America has been blessed with enormous resources. Whether we speak of minerals or timber or water or "amber waves of grain," this nation has benefitted from a resource base that is the envy of the world. This asset, coupled with a political system that permitted us to develop it, has been the physical backbone of our independence. Without the economic independence that this resource base has given us, the political independence we fought for would have been tenuous, at best.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming. "FOREWORDThis paper provides a unique description of a method devised for mining a very thick steeply dipping seam of soft gassy coal which was prone to spontaneous combustion. The editors con¬sider that the information in this paper should be important to those who may have to consider mining such seams again at some time in the future and therefore believe that the paper warrants reprinting in the present volume. The author was ask¬ed to review the paper and to add any additional relevant in¬formation. He provided the accompanying footnote, only a month before his death on April 22, 1982.IntroductionIn the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels. and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated.The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not lend themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition the present operations in this particular' seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not encountered on the upper level.Coal will, without question, long continue to be an impor¬tant factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion."

"Regenerative and recuperative burner systems require advanced combustion techniques to minimize NOx emissions. Various methods of pollutant minimization and furnace design considerations are described. Cited examples are a large high temperature furnace and a small Zinc vaporizing furnace. The concept of total carbon footprint is introduced. The application of Biomass combustion as an effective method of cost and green-house gas (GHG) reduction is discussed. Practical considerations of scale, location and process limitations are discussed. Two examples of biomass fired equipment are cited. Ideal sites have large biomass resources available locally. Processed biomass fuels will be an important substitute for fossil fuel. INTRODUCTIONIn 1992, I presented a paper entitled Combustion Strategies In The Modern Industrial Environment (1992). At that time an abundant supply of cheap fossil fuel made many of the measures I talked about difficult to justify for anything but new equipment.Since 1992 we, as a society, have demonstrated an ability to accelerate the pace of industrial and societal change. The term industrial revolution applied to this age of incessant change is completely meaningless, implying a discrete moment in historical time. What our society has built is a system capable of unfettered, continuous and accelerating technological change. With this change comes an increasing demand for energy and materials.This year is the anniversary of the Titanic disaster, a moment in time when technological certainty met the caprice of nature and gave us a brutal reminder of what can happen to us if we underestimate that power (Mowbray, 1912). In the intervening interval we have regained the technological arrogance that was lost in 1912 bringing us back to the problems of climate change and the need for sustainable industrial activities.We use advanced mathematics to describe many complex systems, sometimes with disastrous results. For example there has been a recent attempt to model the global economy as a completely deterministic system. This premise is flawed at its foundation as human nature and emotion are indeterminate constants in the equations, yielding probabilistic solutions at best. As engineers we are all familiar with stiff problems. The solution to such a problem is meaningless and we have all had the misfortune to live through and rue the effects of that miscalculation over the last few years."

The conventional CaO-SiO2-based mould fluxes are not suitable for high-Al steel casting because of the strong reaction between silica in the flux and aluminium in the steel strand. In the process of casting of high-Al steel, flux composition changes; with the decrease of the silica concentration and increase of alumina. Knowledge and understanding of the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on flux structure and properties are useful for flux design for the high Al-steel continuous casting. This paper investigated the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on structure, viscosity, phase composition of fluxes quenched at different temperatures and heat transfer of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-Na2O-Li2OMgO- F fluxes. It was found that flux melting temperature increased with the increase in Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Viscosity of the flux melts increased significantly with the increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio from 0.7 to 1.2, reaching the maximum value, and then decreased with further increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the change of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the change of aluminate and silicate structural units. The turning point for viscosity was attributed to the change in the degree of flux polymerisation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio increased crystallisation tendency of the fluxes. Heat transfer measurement by infrared emitter technique (IET) revealed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the decrease in heat flux which is correlated well with the increased crystallinity of the flux. The results suggested that the flux with Al2O3/SiO2 ratio 4.3 is the best candidate among the studied CaO-Al2O3-based mould fluxes for casting of high-Al steel.

The intent of this paper is to try to answer the complex question: "How much grinding capacity should be designed into a new mining - milling project?" Much work has been devoted to the technical aspects of grinding, the "how" of grinding. But, in the writers' opinion, the economically important subject of optimizing grinding capacity in mill design has not received the attention it deserves, at least not in published literature. For the purpose of this paper it is necessary to distinguish clearly between optimizing operation and optimizing design. Optimizing operation involves making the best use of the available plant and equipment. Much excellent work has been done and is being done in this area. In operation, one can make tradeoffs of production rate and recovery, or recovery and grade, to maximize profits. However, this must be done within the limitations imposed in the design stage. Flexibility is limited by the existing plant. In project design, on the other hand., there are no preexisting physical limitations except as imposed by nature itself; the planners and designers have considerable latitude in their efforts to optimize the overall project. They have complete control over a large number of important design variables from the mine to the finished product. The grinding process design is one of these variables. It not only determines the capital cost charges for grinding and the maximum grinding capacity that operating management will have to work with, but also determines the range of capability of the auxiliary equipment, which fixes the degree of flexibility possible in operation. This paper is concerned with optimizing design rather than operation. The terms "optimum" and "optimize" are sometimes used in a technical sense in connection with grinding, recovery or grade. In this paper, these terms are used only in the economic sense. In this age of working large deposits of ever lower grade ores, it is in¬creasingly essential to design projects and plants for optimum economics, based on the most applicable economic. criteria. Since grinding represents a large part of both capital and operating cost of the project, and largely determines percentage recovery of metal, it should be included as one of the factors in optimizing the project design. This paper is written primarily with reference to medium to large copper concentrators employing conventional wet grinding. However, the principles involved should be applicable to other ores and other methods of grinding.

æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. "Since being reported to the 2012 UMI in Shanghai, the Cook Islands has been steadily developing for the commencement of it Seabed Minerals sector in its large Exclusive Economic Zone which contain a vast and unique Manganese Nodule resource, estimated at 10 billion tonnes1. At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."

"This paper gives an account of the production of ductile-grade titanium powder in 100-pound batches by reduction of purified titanic chloride with magnesium, followed by grinding, leaching, and magnetic separation of the reaction product. Apparatus, technique, and methods of controlling product quality are described, and some data on operating costs are given.Although man has been aware of the existence of the element titanium for over 150 years, only recently has the metal itself been available in a form pure enough, particularly with reference to absorbed gases, to allow an estimate of its physical properties. In comparison with mild steel, the tensile strength of titanium is about the same, the resistance to atmospheric corrosion greater, and the specific gravity much less.These properties suggest the usefulness of titanium as a structural material for applications requiring resistance to atmospheric attack and a good strength-weight ratio. Although known reserves of titanium, high-grade enough to be useful at present are not sufficiently extensive to predicate that titanium might supplant iron, aluminum, and magnesium for structural purposes, the reserves are large enough to make its use as a structural material quite feasible in certain fields in which its unique properties are required.As a result of these considerations, the Bureau of Mines station at Tucson initiated an, investigation into the technology of titanium in 1938. First, a critical survey and small-scale trial of virtually all suggested methods7/ for producing the metal was made. The method devised by Kroll8/ seemed best adapted as a source of metallic titanium for, although the purity of the product was not as high as that of products from some other processes, it seemed that modifications in technique necessary for larger-scale production could be made more easily.Essentially, in applying the Kroll process, titanium tetrachloride was reduced to metallic titanium by adding the chloride slowly to molten magnesium contained in a molybdenum-lined iron reaction chamber filled with a protective atmosphere of argon. After reduction to the state of completion desired, the reduction mass and chamber were allowed to cool. Then the chamber was opened, and the reaction mass, consisting of titanium, magnesium chloride, and some unused magnesium, was removed by suitable means. Most of the magnesium chloride and metallic magnesium were removed by leaching in dilute hydrochloric acid. The leached sponge was then ground wet in a ball mill, releached in strong acid, and dried Removal of free iron by magnetic separation completed the production process.Development of the Kroll process by the Bureau was undertaken first at the station at Salt Lake City, in 1942 and the amount formed per run was increased in several steps from a few grams to pounds.9/ In addition to increasing the size of batch over that used by Kroll, the technique was simplified somewhat by the use of unlined reaction vessels."

The great demand for metallic aluminum for the prosecution of World War II caused the consumption of bauxite, the common ore of aluminum, to increase greatly. Prior to the war, the domestic deposits 'of bauxite, which occur chiefly in Arkansas and less extensively in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, supplied only: about 30 ,percent of the ore required for aluminum-metal production and approximately 40 percent of alumina for all purposes. Enemy activities during the war seriously interfered with shipment of bauxite from the normal peacetime source in Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, South America, and focused attention on the necessity for increasing production from known domestic deposits. Even in peacetime, the production of aluminum ore in the United States could not satisfy requirements.
