The porphyry copper province of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is the largest copper producing region in the world. Most of the deposits occur in Arizona which now produces over 54% of the newly mined copper in the United" States. As the many recent discoveries are brought into production, Arizona's share of the nation's copper production will increase. The term "porphyry copper" as used in this paper includes all deposits of generally low grade disseminated copper mineralization amenable to bulk mining techniques. Therefore, copper deposits such as Pima-Mission, Twin Buttes, and Vekol where the copper mineralization occurs principally in the intruded rocks will be considered as "porphyry copper" deposits. Most of the deposits have been discovered since World War II, consequently, the southwest, and particularly southern Arizona is perhaps the most intensively explored area for copper deposits on earth. Most of the major natural resource companies in the United States and Canada maintain exploration offices in southern Arizona. To illustrate the success of exploration efforts, the location of porphyry copper deposits either known or producing prior to World War II are shown on figure 1 and the deposits discovered since World War II which are either in production or in the exploration and development stage are shown on figure 2.

The kaolinite presence in bauxite ores increases caustic soda consumption during the digestion step in the Bayer process. Depending on the kaolinite content, the utilization of the ore in the Bayer process may be unfeasible. This investigation addressed the variables involved in kaolinite flotation through microflotation experiments in a Hallimond tube and zeta potential determinations. The tests were performed with a pure sample of kaolinite (96%). Five collectors were tested: Duomeen T (DT), cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecylamine (DDA) and Flotigam EDA (EDA). Four of them performed well as collectors, at a concentration of 1x10-4 mol/L: CPC, CTAB, DDA and EDA. The kaolinite isoelectric point (IEP) was determined at pH = 4.6. The IEP was shifted towards higher pH values in the collectors? presence, indicating specific adsorption onto the mineral surface.

"Release analysis is independent of collector and frother dosage and type, but it is primarily influenced by the degree of liberation or “state of release of the sample”. The shape of release curve is an indication of the degree of liberation. This paper briefs about the effect of reagent combination, particle size and surface characteristics on the release analysis of difficult-to-clean LVC coal.Release analysis of three LVC coal fines obtained from two different coalfields of India was carried out at three different size levels such as -0.5mm, (-0.5+0.1) mm, and -0.1mm. The collectors used were n-dodecane and commercial diesel oil. Incomplete liberation of coal fines even at a size of -100µm, corroborated by photomicrographs of ROM and clean coal macerals, in a great measure reduced the flotation-based cleaning potential of the fines. FESEM images of fines reveals that the adherence of ultrafine onto the surface of relatively coarser particles reduced the clean coal recovery. The results obtained also appear to be coal, reagent combination and, particle size and particle surface specific. Only one coal indicated the liberation as is usually expected for -0.1mm particles with a reasonable yield of 65% at 18% ash. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation has a long history of being used to treat coal fines. Coal flotation is considered to be difficult, if the percentage of Near Gravity Material (NGM), i.e. essentially locked particles, in flotation feed is >10% [Aplan, 1993], which is usually the case with all the coking coal fines in India. The fines are rich in vitrinite, so valuable for coking coal. Unfortunately, there appears to be no standard procedures to determine the separation efficiency of froth floatation. Release analysis proposed by C.C. Dell in 1953 [Dell, 1953], aimed to determine the ultimate floatability of coal. Several other techniques had been proposed but release analysis technique has been considered to be a vast improvement over the batch flotation process [Forrest et al. 1994]."

Numerous studies have shown the potential of air rate profiling to significantly improve the flotation performance of a bank of cells. To date many profiles have been implemented; balanced, increasing, decreasing and combinations of these. Previous work has typically shown using an increasing air rate profile, where the air rates are increased proportionally to each cell down the bank, yields a higher grade for a given recovery compared to other profiles. Air rate profiling can then be thought of as having two distinct components; determining the correct distribution of a given volume of air and, perhaps more importantly determining the correct total volume of air to add to the bank. To date no method for this second component has been established. In an alternative technique the air rate to each cell is adjusted in order to optimise the air recovery from that cell. Air recovery is the fraction of the inlet air which overflows the weir of a cell as unburst bubbles. The peak in air recovery (PAR) is a robust measurement that indicates optimal performance for the operating conditions in the cell, and sets the PAR air rate. By doing this for each cell in the bank, the optimal total air rate to the bank and the optimal distribution of that air can be simultaneously determined. In this study plant trials evaluated different air rate profiles, and profiling based on PAR. The total air rates to the bank for all profiles tested were approximately equal, allowing direct comparison. The results showed that the highest cumulative mineral recovery was achieved by operating at air rates which gave the PAR for each cell down the bank. Different distributions of the same total air rate to the bank gave the same cumulative upgrade ratio, but lower cumulative recoveries. In this study, the increase in cumulative mineral recovery, at the same upgrade ratio, was more than 33%. Peak in air recovery (PAR) based optimisation of air rates to banks of cells and to the individual cells has been shown to significantly improve flotation performance as it simultaneously determines the optimal air rate to the bank, and the optimal distribution of that air.

"The magnetic separation removal rate of pyrite could be improved effectively by increasing the susceptibility of pyrite. The electromagnetic characteristics and absorption response performance of high-sulfur fine coal were studied in strengthening the susceptibility of pyrite. In the process of treating the sample through the microwave, electromagnetic energy could be converted into heat energy due to dielectric loss and magnetic loss. The RL(dB) was evaluate the performance of absorption response of coal. The microwave improved the susceptibility was in ultra-high frequency region, which is the most natural resonance. The absorption fine coal to microwave was strengthened and microwave energy was improved by adding the magnetite powder with double loss characteristics as the microwave absorber. The dielectric properties and permeability characteristics of the fine coal trend were investigated by maxing magnetite powder. The microwave absorption in different coal thickness was surveyed through the reflection of energy loss.INTRODUCTIONMicrowave desulfurization is one of the most important research directions (Haque, 1999; Makul, Rattanadecho, & Agrawal, 2014; Su, Tang, Zhang, Jing, & Bai, 2014). The working principle of microwave absorption response can be briefly described as the interaction of the sample with microwave energy, which will result in the microwave energy converting into heat energy loss (Keangin & Rattanadecho, 2013). For specific samples, the polarization effect includes multiple polarization mechanisms(Meikap, Purohit, & Mahadevan, 2005). Different polarization mechanisms have different occurrence time and dominant mechanisms. Meantime, energy consumption will be occurred during the process of polarization effect (Chelgani & Jorjani, 2011; Rowson & Rice, 1990) . The absorption of microwave energy in the fine coal is a process of electromagnetic response (Znamenácková, Lovás, Mockovciaková, Jakabský, & Briancin, 2005). Microwave transfers the electromagnetic waves into the heat energy by microwave dielectric loss and magnetic loss for achieving the absorption of microwave energy in the treatment of samples (Lee, Kim, Kim, Chung, & Kim, 2004). The additive magnetic medium is Fe3O4 belonging to microwave energy absorber of double loss medium (Uslu, Atalay, & Arol, 2003)."

This paper deals with the geology of the Smallwood mine in relation to its influence on mining and milling operations. Structure within the orebody, and variations in ore grade and material types, will be described and associated with the various drilling, blasting and milling operations. The orientation of planes of weakness, either bedding or jointing planes, and contacts between extremes in material types influence the size of the broken material. Generally speaking, variations in grinding rates and recovery can be associated with stratigraphic sequence and metamorphism.

The Spyder roadster is the last product in the Can-Am product family lineup. To remain at the forefront of innovation, a hybrid motorization version of the Spyder is being developed in order to reduce fuel consumption and emission of greenhouse gases. But, the addition of electric components (e-motor, lithium-ion battery... ) raises the issue of added weight and volume. This article deals with the mass reduction of this Spyder by optimizing its frame.

"Adsorption isotherms of hexyl mercaptan vapour on synthetic sphalerite, zinc sulphide and zinc oxide were de-termined with a gravimetric McBain-Baker micro balance incorporated in the B.E.T. apparatus. Isotherms are given for hexyl mercaptan on synthetic sphalerite at 25°C, 0.5°C and 50°C; on zinc sulphide at 25°C and 1.5°C; and on zinc oxide at 25°C. All these isotherms are sigmoidal, with a definite change in slope at or close to the mono-layer. The amount of mercaptan adsorbed below the monolayer increases almost linearly with relative pressure to P/P0 = 0.8.Above this value, the amount adsorbed increases very rapidly with relative pressure. Hysteresis loops appear in the isotherms for all adsorption-desorption cycles. These loops are completely reversible. It is not possible to desorb the mercaptan monolayer from any of the adsorbents, even at elevated temperatures."

The performance of mould fluxes in satisfying its quality requirements can have a significant effect on the efficiency of the continuous casting process and on the surface quality of the products. This performance is affected by various parameters including the characteristics of the mould fluxes, the quality of the steel being cast and the operational conditions of the caster. The extremely complex relationships involving the parameters mentioned above make it very difficult to have simple criteria for selecting mould fluxes for casting a certain grade of steel in a continuous casting machine. These difficulties led steelmakers and mould flux suppliers to select mould fluxes based mainly on plant trials. In the present work, a software to help in the analysis and development of mould fluxes for continuous casting was developed_ This software includes several models for prediction of mould flux viscosity and consumption. A mathematical model was also used to predict the heat flux through the mould flux. The proposed methodology was applied to continuous casting of crack sensitive steels_ Some of the results given by this software are presented, discussed and compared to plant data.

"The asbestos mining industry in the Eastern Townships of Quebec has early recognized the undesirable side-effects associated with mineral production, such as air pollution, noise and unsightly waste dumps. In order to efficiently achieve the industry's aim of eliminating or minimizing these objectionable features of mining, all of the asbestos producers in Quebec interchange information, knowledge and design dealing with the environmental control measures through the Environmental Committee of the Quebec Asbestos Mining Association.The paper describes what has been done and what is planned for the future in the various problem areas, such as control of dust emitted during the open-pit drilling operation, control of dryer stack emissions, control of the environment in ore, fibre and tailings handling operations, rehabilitation of the countryside covered by waste dumps, and many others."

Shear strength parameters of compacted clay liners are needed to analyse the stability of mine waste dumps containing compacted clay liners as sealing layers for potentially acid forming waste rock. A representative clay sample was supplied by McArthur River Mine from the mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, with an average as-supplied gravimetric moisture content of about 13.6%. The clay was compacted in a 100 mm by 100 mm direct shear box at the as-supplied moisture content to a dry density of 1.85 t/m3, representing the field compaction specification adopted by the mine. To determine the peak and ultimate shear strengths of the compacted clay, single-stage direct shear testing was carried out at nominal initial normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, representing shallow depths of burial in the North Overburden Emplacement Facility of about 2.8 m, 5.6 m and 11.1 m, respectively (assuming a waste rock wet unit weight of 18 kN/m3). Three shearing rates of 1 mm/min (rapid), 0.1 mm/min (intermediate) and 0.01 mm/min (slow) were applied to study the influence of shearing rate on shear strength. In addition, the development of a residual shear plane was tested by reversal and re-shearing in the direct shear box. In the first shearing, the peak and ultimate shear strengths are determined. The normal load was then removed and the box rewound to its starting position. The normal load was then re-applied and the specimen re-sheared. Two reversals were applied to each specimen, and it was found that there was no significant reduction in shear strength. Finally, based on a range of shear strengths obtained in the laboratory for McArthur River Mine clay and other materials by various laboratories over time, shear strength parameters for the compacted clay were recommended for use by the mine.CITATION:Xu, Y, Williams, D J and Hacker, J, 2018. The recycling of steel mill dusts is getting more and more important. The costs and requirements of land filling are rising and companies are interested in new recycling strategies. The rising of sustaina¬bility hand in hand with the high rate of valuable metals in these residues supports new research activities on the recycling sector. Especially zinc but also iron and lead are economical factors due to the treatment of steel mill dusts. This paper gives a small overview of fundamental studies concerning the chemical and physical composition of these dusts. Furthermore aggregates for the reduction of these dusts in the liquid phase are introduced and compared. The Flash-Reactor, the TBRC-Technology (Top Blown Rotary Converter) and submerged arc furnaces and there use for melting and treatment of these dusts are in the center of interest of this paper. The final conclusion gives an overview of possibilities for reduction of filter dusts in the liquid phase.

Significant effort has been expended and considerable success has been realized m the application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment in the mining and ore processing industries. This effort has been applied principally to process equipment with the objective of increasing throughput, minimizing labor requirements and/or improving grade or product quality. Less spectacular, but quite rewarding has been the successful application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment to a wide variety of material handling equipments. The quest for cleaner steel is driven by increasingly stringent requirements from the manufacturing and construction industries. Key issues are the occurrence and removal of inclusions; These are discussed in the context of the unit processes of deoxidation, refining, transfer and casting of molten steel. Process thermodynamics and kinetics are also discussed. Recent progresses achieved and problems yet to be solved are elaborated, and an integration of the unit processes into a system to produce extra clean, steels with better performance is presented.

"Kidd Creek Mines places approximately 10 000 tonnes of consolidated rockfill (CRF) daily. Consolidated rockfill comprises sized aggregate mixed with different ratios and amounts of binders. Consolidated rockfill is employed to simplify subsequent pillar recovery and provide improved passive/active ground support.The consolidated rockfill is designed to sustain not only the gravitational loading of the overlaying fill material, but also to some extent the dynamic loading applied during blasting of the adjacent stopes and/or pillars. This paper describes the steps taken to optimize the pre-sent fill system at Kidd Creek Mines.The emphasis is on four areas which have high saving potential: lower cost alternative binders, structural design, quality control measures, in-situ testing techniques for back analysis. A consolidated rockfill design optimization chart was developed from these investigations."
