The objective of this work was to prove repeated loading capacities and investigate the selectivity of physically stabilized algal biomass from Spirulina platensis and Chlorella sp. for the removal and recovery of cobalt, nickel and chromium from laterite heap leach liquors. The testwork was carried out on a bench scale in small glass columns and proved that it was possible to immobilize the biomass on the highly porous surface of pumice stone (kissiris). Nickel and cobalt could be removed from pure aqueous solutions of each metal by the immobilized cyanobacterial biomass. Nickel and also cobalt biosorption was sensitive to the initial solution pH. Cobalt recoveries up to 80% were achieved after 5 loading cycles, from low concentration solutions, at pH 6.0. Nickel removal was complete under the same conditions, whereas chromium sorption was ineffective. Desorption of the metal loaded columns was effected by dilute sulfuric acid. The algal species giving the best adsorption capacities for the metals under consideration was selected for further experimental work with real laterite heap leach solution produced by column leaching. A statistical analysis of all obtained results was conducted using the fraction of metal removed as response. The ratio "mass of metal removed to mass of protein contained in the immobilized cells" was determined as well. The described method might be applicable for recovery of cobalt and nickel from diluted laterite heap leach solutions, such as heap wash waters, or for their removal from waste streams of a hydrometallurgical extraction process.

The authors investigated the nature, cause and treatment of 234 back injuries which occurred in 156 different situations in underground coal mines. A detailed interview was conducted with each injured miner as 137 variables were explored to provide a complete picture of the injury scenario. The miners worked at 23 mines in six states. An important finding of the study was that sudden movement, which occurred in 527 of the injuries, is a more frequent factor than heavy lifting in causing hack injuries. Along with sudden movement, other major injury causing factors were equipment seat design, lifting, cable handling, and slips/trips. No significant differences were found between the injury scenarios associated with lost time and non-lost time injuries; thus, both sets of scenarios should he used in doe loping back injury control strategies. Medical treatment and rehabilitation varied in content and quality. Dialogue between the medical, rehabilitation and mining communities is needed to develop an effective treatment strategy. Back injury control related training was found to be inadequate in most mines. Mine specific training for physical stress recognition and potential sudden torte release should he added to the training currently given. Based on the information collected in this study, recommendations were made regarding equipment design, mechanical assists and procedures for material handling, training, etc., which, if implemented, will assist in reducing the frequency of back injuries in underground coal mining.

Methods for increasing compliance to medical and health regimens were reviewed along with similar research in industrial and mine safety. Principles abstracted from both areas suggest that compliance with health and safety practices is improved when: (1) Workers are cooperatively involved with management in setting safety goals and planning for their achievement, (2) the program has the support of workers, supervisors, and management, (3) specific tasks responsible for injuries are targeted, (4) company organizational policy, educational, and behavioral programs work together toward the same goals, (5) workers and supervisors are frequently informed about their degree of correct task performance, and (6) programs are monitored by the frequency of correct performance of targeted tasks, (the means to lowered accident rates) rather than by lowered accident and injury rates themselves (the goals for safety programs.) Safety programs that incorporate these principles increase persons' adherence to specified health and safety practices and subsequently decrease injury rates. It is recommended that: (1) a group of experts be convened to study the application of these principles to coal mine safety programs, and (2) a short course for safety trainers be developed to demonstrate how these principles can be used to strengthen existing mine safety programs.

In the years 1850 to 1923, the United States produced 2,426,000 flasks- (73,600 metric tons) of quicksilver worth $120,500,000. California yielded 2,195,000 flasks of this total; the remainder came from Texas, Oregon, Nevada, and A.rizona. Most of this metal has been extracted from low-grade ores, those containing less than 0.5 per cent mercury or 10 pounds per ton. The finished product or " virgin metal" is made at the mine and shipped in flasks. Quicksilver is unique in being the only metal that is liquid at ordinary temperature. Because of this and other physical and chemical properties, it is perhaps more indispensable to industry than any other metal. On the other hand, the quicksilver industry of the world is of vanishing significance" when compared to the major mineral industries with respect to quantity and value of product, capital invested, or the number of men employed. The peculiar value of quicksilver is due to the fact that in some of its applications no substitute is available and in others the substitutes would be unsatisfactory or extremely expensive. Scarcely a branch of science or industry fails to make some use of mercury or its compounds. As a detonator for explosives, mercury fulminate holds first place and in safety and reliability could be replaced only by the highly expensive silver fulminate.t vThrough its use in detonators and in the metallurgy of the precious metals quicksilver is of special importance to mining. In medicine,in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, the production of pigments and antifouling paints, and the general field of experimental science quicksilver is equally indispensable.

The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. "The stability control of longwall coal face is the key technology of large-cutting-height mining method. Therefore, a systematic study of the factors that affect coal face stability and its control technology is required in the development of large-cutting-height mining method in China. After the practical field observation and years of study, it was found that the more than 95% of failure in coal face are shear failure. The shear failure analysis model of coal face has been established, that can perform systematic study among factors such as mining height, coal mass strength, roof load, support resistance, and face flipper protecting plate horizontal force. Meanwhile, sensitivity analysis of factors influencing coal face stability showed that improving support capacity, cohesion of coal mass and decreasing roof load of coal face are the key to improve coal face stability. Numerical simulation of the factors affecting coal face stability has been performed using UDEC software and the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis. The coal face reinforcement technology of largecutting- height mining method using the grouting combined with coir rope is presented. Laboratory tests have been carried out to verify its reinforcement effect and practical application has been implemented in several coal mines with good results. It has now become the main technology to reduce longwall coal face failure of large-cutting-height mining method.INTRODUCTIONLarge-cutting-height mining method of more than 3.5m mining height, is one of the main methods for thick-seam mining in China. Currently, the largest mining height is 7.3m and the support capacity is 1,800mt. Shendong and Jincheng mining area have the best use of large-cutting-height mining technology (Wang, 2009). Generally, the mining height ranges from 6.5m to 7m and the support capacity ranges from 1,000mt to 2,000mt, annual output of the panel is between 10 and 12 million tons and the highest are 15 million tons. The main goal of large-cutting-height mining technology is to achieve high yield and high efficiency by increasing the advancing speed of longwall face (Yuan, 2011- 2012). However, in certain geologic conditions, rib spalling and roof falls in the unsupported area often occur. Because of the large tonnage of large-cutting-height mining equipment, once the rib spalling and roof falls cause the equipment to be out of alignment, the face advancing speed could be affected seriously that in turn affects the output (Yang, 2012). Therefore, studying the failure mechanism and control technique of coal face in large-cuttingheight mining method is of great significance."

Abstract A discussion of the difficulties involved in the production of a clean molybdenite concentrate introduces the paper. There is a brief description of the various methods for producing molybdenite that will fit marketing specifications, and it is shown how these methods are nor suited to the milling of ores containing small quantities of bismuth and copper. A process that was developed in the ore testing laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Ottawa for the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada is described in derail and some results from pilot plant operation of this milling scheme are tabulated. A description of the La Corne mill, where the writer supervised the introduction of the process on a commercial scale, adds to the interest of the paper. In conclusion, there is a review of the conditions necessary for proper operation of the flowsheet. An attempt is made to show how the process might be satisfactory in other problems similar to that at the La Corne mill. Introduction The production of a molybdenite concentrate, free from impurities and high in grade, has been a difficult task when milling some types of ore. Whereas ordinary flotation techniques will produce acceptable concentrates of the baser sulphides, in many cases they will not serve in the treatment of molybdenite, for this mineral must be of optimum grade and purity to bring the best prices, or to find a market at all . Faced with the necessity of meeting stringent specifications, the mill operator has been forced to employ expensive processing methods, and to be satisfied with low recoveries, in order to make grade with his product. The most objectionable and common impurities found with molybdenite are: (a) gangue minerals and iron sulphides, which lower the grade; and (b) copper, bismuth, or antimony, which are deleterious in the final uses of the molybdenite products. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to market a concentrate with over 0.5 per cent of any of the latter impurities, or with a grade much below 90 per cent MoS2. Various methods, which have been highly successful in specific applications, have been developed to meet the problem of producing a suitable concentrate. All of them, however, have certain defects precluding their use when treating ores of a nature different from the one for which they ? were designed. The writer has developed a process for molybdenite ores having an objectionable impurity content. A description of the procedure involved, and of the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada, where the process has been adopted, should be of interest to flotation operators.

Determining the origins of air overpressure has been a long-debated topic within the explosives engineering community. Historically, it has been accepted that the initial face movement gave rise to air displacement, resulting in an air overpressure pulse. Later research proposed that the air overpressure pulse resulted from the shockwave rapidly propagating through and impacting the quarry face. Most recently, researchers have derived that air overpressure is associated with the gas phase from which a gaseous product from explosives rapidly pours out the quarry face under high pressure. Significant research has strongly indicated that the time at which the air overpressure pulse exits the face fails to coincide with either the arrival of the shockwave at the free face or the initial face movement. Research has consistently shown that the shockwave arrival at the face occurs before the air overpressure pulse leaves the face. Therefore, to best determine which blast mechanism contributed to the initial air overpressure pulse, testing was aimed at verifying the precise time at which the air overpressure exited the faces compared to when the face first moved. This research describes tests using scaled concrete blocks, which provided the ability to control the key parameters necessary for the research to be successfully concluded. Black powder was selected as the energetic material to eliminate the production of the detonation wave while still inducing other gas-producing effects. The components evaluated were air blast arrival times in front of the face, the initial movement of the blast face, the precise initiation time of the blast hole, timing of pressurization within the rock mass (between borehole and face, or adjacent borehole), and the speed of sound in the air. A detailed timeline was created which portrays the actions within the blast to promote an understanding of the sequencing of events. The results showed that the initial face movement occurred at 17.57 milliseconds (ms) while the calculated time at which the air overpressure exited the face occurred at 7.07 ms. The large disparity continues to reaffirm the premise that the origin fails to coincide with the air pressure pulse. Average pressurization through the block occurred at a rate of 341.23 feet per second (104.15 meters per second) which resulted in the gas release pulse being calculated to exit the face between 4.41 and 6.21 ms. This pulse correlates more accurately with the air overpressure origin timing which will be the focus of continued research. Knowing the precise origin of blast-induced air overpressure will assist in being able to better control it through appropriate blast design.

"Geometallurgical variables often cause problems to conventional geostatistical workflows. There are many variables; some are compositional and some are non-additive. They often show: complex multivariate relationships undersampling relative to conventional grade variables unequal sampling; that is, all variables are not available at all data locations.A variety of approaches have been developed over the years, but geostatisticians remain mostly focused on modelling rock types and a few grade variables with an abundance of data. The problems are reviewed and a chained workflow is presented where appropriate techniques are employed in sequence to permit reliable spatial prediction of geometallurgical variables. The spatial models may be used to assess the value of additional data, for prediction of process performance, for improved mine planning and other optimisation tasks. The chained workflow will include data transformations such as ratios and normal scores that make the variables amenable to geostatistical modelling. Data imputation techniques to account for missing values are considered with special consideration to spatial correlation with the available data. Decorrelation techniques such as the principal components, min/max autocorrelation factors and projection pursuit multivariate transformation are employed to manage massively multivariate modelling. Full distribution modelling must be considered to avoid biases in the prediction of non-additive variables. The post-processing of geometallurgical models must be streamlined for robustness and efficiency. The precise workflow varies according to the specific purpose of the study. A critical review of the numerous test methods that have been devised for measuring the "plastic" and "swelling" properties of bituminous coking coals and the practical evaluation of the data obtained has long been needed. The author appreciates fully, first, the arduous problem of doing justice to the merits and limitations of the many original test methods and their manifold modifications and, second, the more difficult task of interpreting the test data obtained in their practical applications to the important problems involved in the coking process. It has been the constant aim of the author to point out the broader significance of the test principles employed in the different classes of test methods and the usefulness of the test data obtained in relation to the problem of coking bituminous coals, rather than to stimulate unduly a controversial criticism of the merits and limitations of any particular class of test methods or of individual test methods devised by different workers. The task has been quite difficult because of the almost total lack of accepted test standards and specifications.

1N THIS PAPER, the writer proposes to limit his comments to few generalized phases of the subject, based on his personal experience in the midwestern United 'States and in one section .of the Coal Branch in Western Alberta. The following statistics are submitted to show the importance that strip mining has assumed in the coal mining industry of the United States. In 1914, 1,281,000 tons of strip coal were produced, amounting to 0.3 per cent of the total production. In 1948, the total was 13~,505,000 tons, representing 23.3 per cent. In 1949, the percentage figure dropped slightly and this can be partially accounted for by the labour disturbances prevalent throughout the year. In 1914, there were 48 power shovels and draglines being used in the stripping of coal; in 1949 there were 3,712, not to mention other types of coal stripping equipment such as bulldozers, tractors and scrapers, rotary excavators, and stackers. At the bituminous coal mines in Western Canada, strip mining was introduced only a few years ago, two of the major reasons for its development being the need for increased production during the war and post-war years and the need to hold the line on increasing production costs, but even in these few years the percentage of strip production has in-creased to such an extent that some mines that, five or six years ago, were producing all their tonnage from underground operations are today obtaining up to 80 per cent of their total output from strip mines.

In order to recycle valuable metals from silver separated residue, a novel method using alkaline smelting at low temperature was proposed. The main factors affecting the main metal recovery such as the smelting temperature, smelting time, liquid-to-solid ratio and alkali addition were investigated comprehensively. The behavior of the main metal elements, such as Pb, Sn, Sb and Bi in silver separated residue was also discussed. The results indicated that amphoteric metals such as Pb and Sn can be smelted into the melt, while other metal elements, such as Sb and Bi were left in the residue.

The linear intercept distributions provide unambiguous and accurate characterizations of the texture of mineralogical materials. The relation between the measured linear intercept distributions and the spatial correlation function is shown to be given by: in the Laplace Transform domain. The linear intercept distributions of the two phases in a low- grade chromite-serpentinite ore were measured. and the spatial correlation functions for both phases were evaluated using the above relation. The correlation functions are the primary relations for integral geometric models of mineralogical texture and this work demonstrates the relation between the 10 stereological model and the 3D integral geometry model for mineral liberation.

Nowadays, the more successful plants are those who have adopted effective and efficient strategies to optimise their plant operation. As the ?heart of the plant? could be viewed as the mil-ling/grinding area, one of the key steps in plant optimisation is, therefore, ensuring the mill is operating properly. In the past, when primary, secondary and tertiary crushers fed material directly to large ball mills, the energy efficiency of the concentrator was determined for the most part by the ball mill operation, whereas now the energy efficiency of a plant often rests largely on the semiau-togenous grinding (SAG) mill operation. As a result, mines have shifted their emphasis in optimization from ball mills to SAG mills. The grinding mill?s energy efficiency essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles, which in turn depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) operates. The essential function of pulp lifter being to transport the broken material and slurry out of the mill, its design optimization therefore affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of AG and SAG grinding mills. This paper will discuss how the optimised design of the pulp lifter/ discharger has helped to eliminate material transport issues such as flow-back and carry-over of slurry and pebbles to in-crease the energy efficiency of SAG mill using the actual operational data.

BHPÆs Cannington process plant was commissioned in October 1997. The Cannington ore contains high grades of silver, lead and zinc but also contains high levels of fluorine which must be removed to produce a marketable concentrate. As a consequence the plant is more complex than the typical base metal concentrator. Some of the features of the Cannington operation include a single stage autogenous mill, multiple stages of flotation cleaning, two leach circuits, pressure filtration and a paste fill plant. The start-up and achievement of design performance for new lead/zinc operations has traditionally taken much longer than for gold or copper operation and is littered with many tales of woe with feasibility targets often not achieved (Agarwal, Brown and Katrak, 1984; Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999; Leung, Andreatidis, Woodall and Alford, 1996; Sherman, 1999; Ward, 1998).

"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"

In this paper, the authors attempt to bridge the gap that currently exists between the duty-of-care responsibilities of underground mining industry personnel, and the multifaceted health challenges facing mineworkers in Western Australia’s metal mines where diesel-powered mobile equipment predominate. In addressing this issue, the complexities of the nature and extent of the challenges are discussed along with the current inadequacy of existing regulatory metrics. Support is given to the need for well-organised in-mine baseline studies to clearly define the distribution and aging characteristics of the toxic and carcinogenic pollutants within the mine ventilation system, with special emphasis given to exploring the validity of biomonitoring systems. In February 1996, ATLANTIC, COPPER completed the construction of a Project for Expansion and Environmental Improvements in its Smelter and Electrolytic Refinery located in Huelva. Following the expansion, the new operating concept is based on the simultaneous blowing of two converters, while increasing throughput in the Flash Furnace up to the level required to deliver matte to both converters. While the production level planned with the Project.(270,000 MTPY of copper from concentrates) was reached the following June, work since then has been carried out to optimize the new equipment .and to develop a new operating shedule. This paper describes operational experiences from the start up of the Expansion Project, difficulties encountered and operating improvements introduced, which have allow an increase of production levels up to 300,000 MTPY of copper.
