"I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. Many metallurgical processes use submerged gas injection to increase the contact area between gas and liquid phases in order to promote faster overall reaction rates. The work presented in this paper is part of an experimental investigation to measure the gas-liquid interfacial area available in bubble plumes within molten metal baths. Measurements of the nitrogen absorption rate during submerged injection into molten iron baths have been used to estimate the interfacial areas of the bubble plumes. A theoretical model was used to predict the superficial nitrogen transfer rate under mixed liquid phase mass transfer -interfacial reaction control. The interfacial area was calculated by dividing the overall nitrogen absorption rate by the superficial rate. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the interfacial areas measured in our laboratory with data from a comparable system reported in the literature. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of three theoretical models and one empirical correlation. The models of Turkdogan (3) and Zhao and Themelis (5) gave the best agreement with our data.

The most challenging scope of any bridge project in marine or inter tidal zone is to construct sub structure like well Foundation, group pile, pile cap etc. Similarly, it also affects the marine environment/ecology to a great extent. Understanding the level of difficulties and aiding to provide an environment friendly solution, various options are analysed to overcome these and found mono pile to be the best alternative in this context. Generally, the foundation type of any bridge constructed in river, marine or intertidal zone in India is preferred for group piles. For the first time, monopile is being accepted as the foundation of bridge in India at Mumbai Coastal Road Project. The diameters of the monopiles used in this project are 2.5 m and 3.2 m. Hence, the challenges involved in monopile construction and experiences to overcome it are worth to share. Here, a brief discussion on environmental, geological issues and the needs of monopile as the foundation of bridge has been discussed. Furthermore, the monopile construction stages and confirmation of monopile capacity through different load tests have been elaborated.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. The MPASS System is a menu-driven user oriented system of interactive computer programs, which form five major subsystems. The subsystems: 1. Simulation 2. Time Study 3. Mine Background Reports 4. NATURE endowed the Niagara Frontier with great resources but it was the molding of these resources by the early pioneers that assured its future development. This great industrial district of New York stretches along about fifty miles of shore line on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, embracing the two counties of Erie and Niagara, with the city of Buffalo about in the center. This location at the junction of the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the western boundary of the State, a great focal point of land and water, transportation, guaranteed the development of the Frontier. Although the first white settlers came to this section in 1784, it was not until after the turn of the nineteenth century that real development started. Perhaps the most significant influence in the early days was the completion of the Erie Canal between Buffalo and Albany in 1825. The content of the book covers: (1) The theory of the Eötvös torsion balance; derivation of the working formulas; description of the instrument; method of observation; relation of the magnitudes observed to the lines of force and the level surfaces of gravity; corrections or normal effects, near and distance terrane; subterranean effects; effects due to certain mathematical bodies. (2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.

Lead is an ancient metal, has been produced to-date from its ores exclusively by pyrometallurgical route. The process suffers from high operating cost and excessive pollution problems. Extensive research has been going on since the beginning of the twentieth century to find a non-polluting process for its production and a solution for its complex refining scheme. It has been assumed correctly that the hydrometallurgical route should be the most promising. Pilot plants have been constructed and operated for a reasonable periods, but no process has proved to be satisfactory. As a result, a number of smelters and refineries have been shut down. The present review analyses the situation and suggests that the best route to treat lead sulfide concentrates is by leaching with fluoroboric acid, HBF4, containing ferric fluoroborate, Fe(BF4)3, and electrolyzing the solution in a diaphragm cell - - a process recently invented by Italian metallurgists. In this process, any silver present in the concentrate remains in the residue together with elemental sulfur and can be recovered by known methods.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and utilize a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow con- trolling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

Laboratory methods to find the mechanical properties of rock are inherently biased towards stronger strata, which best survive the sample preparation process. Geophysical techniques are not subject to such bias and may be used to predict mechanical properties rapidly and cheaply. Samples (151) were obtained from a borehole that had been comprehensively geophysically logged. The mechanical properties of the samples were established in the laboratory and correlated with the geophysical responses of the strata from which they came. The results indicate that, for homogeneous strata at least, it is possible to predict the unconfined compressive strength reasonably well from sonic travel time measurements made in the field. Predictions of static Young's modulus may also be made from this data source, but with a lesser degree of confidence. A multivariate regression equation is presented which relates down-hole sonic travel time to unconfined compressive strength, depth and the frequency of fractures in the rock mass. This equation may offer potential for the prediction of the mechanical rock properties of fractured and layered strata.

Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading coal and mineral fines in the mining industry. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Furthermore, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically. Due to these technological problems, some operators are forced to discard at least part of the ultrafine materials to tailings (or refuse) ponds, causing significant losses of valuable resources and creating environmental concerns. To address these technological issues, a new separation process named hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation has been developed on the basis of the recent advances in the science of hydrophobic interactions. The results obtained to date show that the process can recover and dewater ultrafine particles simultaneously with high separation efficiencies. Following a series of extensive laboratory tests, the process has been scaled up to proof-of-concept and pilot-scale continuous tests. The results obtained with desliming cyclone overflows, screenbowl effluents, and by-zero coal flotation feeds can be cleaned to less than 4% ash and moisture with over 97% organic matter (or coal) recoveries. The results obtained with mineral fines also showed encouraging results.

What troubles me so often about debates over the environment, which I have heard since I entered government in the late 1960's, is that the issues are so often presented as a false dilemma--the either-or fallacy in logic. The either-or fallacy allows only two possible choices: Either protect the environment or exploit it. In reality, however, there may be a few more options. The diverse, often competing, values that the Earth offers require us to weigh and balance those options through a range of policy options. A quality environment and economic growth and opportunity are not mutually exclusive. First, let me acknowledge that I support a set of resource values recognized in U.S. laws and deemed important down through history for the success of free, progressive, and secure societies: the importance of access to raw materials. Increasingly, however, mineral raw materials have been viewed at best as not particularly relevant to a sophisticated, technologic society, and at worst monstrously destructive of our natural environment. Both perceptions, in my judgment, are wrong.

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. "This paper is the result of a continuing investigation begun in 1953 by government geologists and mining companies. Previous work is reviewed and the development of several stratigraphic nomenclatures and correlation schemes is traced, culminating with the interim report of the Federal-Provincial Committee on Huronian Stratigraphy formed in 1966.The stratigraphy, structure and correlation of the Huronian rocks of the Blind River area and the region between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are reviewed. The area is underlain by three Precambrian units: (1) the Archean greenstones and granites, (2) the Huronian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and (3) the post-Huronian intrusive rocks. The Huronian rocks, largely quartzite and conglomerate with greywackes, argillites and carbonates, were laid down in shallow water transgressing over the eroded Archean basement. Thickness and facies changes indicate a northwesterly source, northerly overlap and deposition controlled by basement topography. Polymictic conglomerates, occurring at least at three horizons, represent tillites and are associated with varvites with dropped clasts. These are best developed in the Gowganda formation, which varies from a continental glacial environment in the north to a marine glacial environment in the southeast.There were at least three phases of post-Huronian igneous activity, probably related to several periods or phases of late Precambrian deformation and metamorphism: (1) sills of Nipissing diabase and rather younger diabase dikes; (2) the Cutler Granite and Croker Island Complex; and (3) dikes of Keweenawan olivine diabase.Copper mineralization is associated with the Nipissing diabase. The uranium ores are found in pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerate near the Huronian Archean unconformity, particularly in ancient valleys; they are considered to be placer deposits modified by later events. Uranium production from the Blind River camp to the end of 1966 was 128,160,096 pounds U308 valued at $1,203,840,848 derived from 56,077,179 tons of ore grading 0.11 per cent U308.Within the Blind River and adjacent areas, future discoveries will probably be the result of costly systematic deep-drilling programs accompanied by detailed geologic studies of the type carried out by oil companies and probably computer-oriented."

The Environmental Excellence in Exploration (E3) project is driven by the recognition that the minerals industry can only maintain its long term viability by ensuring its continued access to lands to explore for, and develop, new mines. Widespread implementation of sound environmental management practices by the exploration community and improved education and understanding of that by stakeholders will help substantially in accomplishing this, and E3 is designed to meet these needs. Exploration crews are now viewed as ambassadors for the global mining community. Their performance in managing the environmental aspects of an exploration program can demonstrate a commitment on the part of the international mining sector to environmentally responsible exploration and mining. We have all observed that failure to behave responsibly can alienate local residents, encourage anti-mining NGOs and jeopardize development. As the saying goes, ?you don?t get a second chance to make a first impression?, and we want to make a favourable first impression. The E3 project is focused on creating an electronic manual, the e-manual, which will provide rapid access to the most up-to-date information on environmental management practices for minerals exploration globally. The e-manual will reflect current thinking and practices in environmental management. It will be richly illustrated with actual examples that reflect the realities of exploration. It will strive to identify the key environmental issues and concerns that apply to most exploration projects, and identify other sources of relevant information useful to field practice. It is our belief that E3, or something very like it, is central to ensuring that the industry survives the current challenges to its viability. E3 will be a cornerstone of the mining industry?s drive to sustainability simply stated, if we are not permitted to explore for mines, there will be none of them at some point in the relatively near future.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Frieda River Project is located in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. The target commodities for a bulk mining operation are copper and gold associated with a large felsic porphyry system. The project comprises a series of deposits, with the Horse-Ivaal-Trukai (HIT) being the largest. It also includes the adjacent smaller Koki and Ekwai deposits.Previous resource estimates for the HIT were made using 14 separate mineralised domains based on structure, copper grades, lithology and alteration. H&S Consultants (H&SC) has revisited the deposit and concluded that a simpler methodology could be used for resource estimation without using wireframes as hard domain boundaries. This conclusion is based on reviewing all the available geological data combined with geological and resource experience of porphyry deposits.It is generally acknowledged that porphyry deposits form by diffusion of mineralising fluids through the host lithologies, meaning that sharp boundaries are unlikely unless these fluids encounter specific physical or chemical boundaries. It is important to prepare a comprehensive geological model prior to attempting resource estimation as it forms the framework for the estimates; however, not all geological features may be relevant to the distribution of mineralisation and there can be a tendency to overcomplicate the estimation process by using too many domains. Unless a hard boundary can be identified consistently and unequivocally, it is generally better not to use a boundary in that location.H&SC completed unconstrained models with no top-cutting using both a simple flat search ellipse and a steep search ellipse to generate global resource estimates reported within a predetermined pit shell at a 0.2 per cent copper cut-off. Both outcomes are within 10 per cent for the tonnes, contained copper tonnes and gold ounces compared to the constrained resource estimate. The slight differences are most likely due to the different search strategies, but also indicate the robustness of the unconstrained modelling approach.CITATION:Queen, L D and Tear, S J, 2015. Water for domestic consumption is an essential right of society, which must be over secured. Water reclamation and reuse provides a unique and viable opportunity to augment traditional water supplies. As a multi-discipline and important element of water resource development and management, water reuse can help to close the loop between water supply and wastewater disposal. Effective water reuse requires integration of water and reclaimed water supply functions. During the coal mining activities, large quantities of water get contaminated and loses its potability characteristics. On an average, in coal mine operation, each coal mine discharges effluents at a rate of nearly 0.5 MGD and thereby wastage of nearly 50 MGD of water takes place per day from the famous Jharia Coal Field of the Dhanbad District. In this paper, attempt has been made to control the extremely high turbidity of mine waste water by using different coagulants and it is observed that ferrous sulphate is the most effective coagulants followed by alum, ferric sulphate and lime. Also combinations of coagulants are used for getting the optimal results. Further steps were also discussed to make this water potable and a scheme of low cost water supply system of mine waste water has been suggested under the Water Management Strategies. Efficient filtration of fine kaolin particles plays a crucial role in processing of raw kaolin to a marketable product. Oftentimes, filtration Is the rate controlling step of the whole process. As a consequence, plant production is dependent, to a great extent, on the rates being achieved In filtration. In order to alleviate the bottleneck in production, Nalco Chemical Company initiated a reagent development program to chemically enhance the performance of the filtration units. Filler aids of different classes were synthesized for evaluation. These include reagents whose primary mode of functionality were: coagulation, flocculation, thickening, and combinations of the preceding. All reagents that were synthesized and tested were listed under the appropriate Food and Drug Administration sections of the Code of Federal Regulations. This paper discusses the development and application of a new reagent that Improves the filter production rate with minimal Impact on filter solids. The results of laboratory filter studies along with plant data are presented and discussed. Plant data indicate that this reagent is capable of increasing production rates by as much as 35% on various clays of coarse particles to the finest fractions, as well as clays that are calcined. The reagent's Impact on solids content, re-slurrying characteristics, Brookfield and Hercules viscosity, and drying is within the standards set by plants who have evaluated and now use this product.

"A study has been made of the surface properties of coals of differing ranks, in their natural state and as modified by the addition of collectors. The evaluation of their surface properties has been done by captive bubble contact angles, water and methylene iodide sessile drop contact angles, zeta potential, point-of-zero charge (PZC) shift, and flotation. .changes in the hydrophobicity of coal is a function of both the rank of the coal and the collecting reagent.INTRODUCTIONThe chemical and physical properties of a raw coal will determine its response to a given beneficiation process. .For such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation, dispersion, handling, dust supression and agglomeration, however, it is also necessary to consider the surface properties of the coal and mineral matter constitutents of the raw coal. In the case of a specific particle to be floated, it is also necessary to consider the properties of the coal as modified by the addition of some reagent designed to modify (usually increase) the hydrophobicity of the coal surface. General properties of the coal have been well summarized by Van Krevelen (1) and Elliott (2), while the data for the surface properties of coal are much more scattered in the literature (see, e.g.: Parekh and Aplan (3), Gutierrez-Rodrigues et al. (4), Aplan (5), Arnold and Aplan (6), Hogg and Chander (7) and Rosenbaum and Fuerstenau (8)). While a knowledge of the inherent surface properties of a sample are important, of much greater practical significance are the properties of the particle in the presence of a reagent, such as a collector, designed to enhance the hydrophobicity of the particle. This study will focus on the surface properties of coals of various ranks in the presence of a variety of collectors."

"INTRODUCTION This paper addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of Coal Exploration Results, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or “saleable” tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal – therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (“ROM”) and Saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information. Competent or Qualified Persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provide. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their Public Reports, which is as comprehensive as possible” (CRIRSCO, 2013): too often this isn’t the case and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed. According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document - “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw Saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the Saleable Coal Reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” As an example to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are highlighted. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a Calorific Value (“CV”) range of 19 to 20MJ/kg, an Ash content between 29 and 34% and Volatiles between 20 to 21%. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities such as a CV range of 22 to 23MJ/kg, an Ash content between 20 and 28% and Volatiles between 22 to 23%. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it isn’t just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station” (Chetty, 2010). Sulphur content is also another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1% Sulphur."
