The life cycle of a mining project begins with initial regional exploration and ends with mine closure and rehabilitation. Between resource definition and the commencement of mine construction is the study phase. In this phase technical concepts and processes are defined, evaluated and assessed with the aim of establishing whether the deposit is economically feasible. The study phase usually involves various steps from a concept/scoping study to prefeasibility and ultimately definitive feasibility study. The complete study phase can take several years. Although the costs for studies are low in comparison to actual construction and operating costs of a mining project, they are significant especially for junior exploration and mining companies advancing projects to the point of being funded.The studies aim to determine selected parameters for the project, eg mining and processing methods, operating strategy, etc and provide a roadmap for project development ahead. Although mining studies are of the utmost importance for the mining project and the project owner, they are usually carried out using a conventional engineering approach: the consultant or design engineer works to a defined scope of work. The resulting design might be based on good engineering, but might often also fail to provide the solution for the project owner that delivers the best shareholder value. An alternative to this more traditional approach to project evaluation is what we have termed a value engineering approach. Value engineering is a creative, organised effort, which in the case of a mining study analyses the requirements of the study for the purpose of achieving the essential outcomes with the highest shareholder value. The outcome of a study is a concept that delivers the highest achievable value of the resource project and shows the way ahead to realise this value. Through a group investigation by experienced, multi-disciplinary teams the value of the resource is improved through the study of alternative options, methods and processes. The scope of the study is not limited to a narrowly defined engineering scope, but to the creation of value.The study commences with the identification of key value drivers and risks, based on the available information (drill data, geotechnical data, metallurgical test work, etc). This enables the quantification of key uncertainties, risks and value adding opportunities. Study efforts concentrate on key value drivers and are not unnecessarily spent on side issues. In this study, the authors investigated the capability of an acidic thiourea solution and silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c, PSTM-3T) as ion-exchange resins to recover of gold from gold-bearing ore concentrates. Firstly, elemental gold present in flotation concentrates was dissolved by leaching with a solution of nitric acid and thiourea under the optimized conditions. The best result on gold thiourea leaching was obtained under a nitric acid concentration of 2 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and oxidant (Fe2(SO4)3) concentration of 3 %, solid:liquid ratio (S:L) of 1:20, leaching time of 6 hours at 20 °C with a gold recovery of 93.7 % for a gold flotation (unroasted) concentrate. For the roasted gold concentrate, the dissolution of gold was 94.8% under the optimized leaching condition as nitric acid concentration of 0.5 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and the oxidant concentration of 1 %, S:L ratio of 1:10, leaching time of 4 hours at 50 °C. Secondly, a series of sorption tests was carried out on a pregnant leach solution containing gold complex Au[S=C(NH2)2]2+ using silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T), respectively. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time and temperature in the sorption process are also studied. As the results, the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were adsorbed about 94.4 % and 95.1 % gold from the pregnant leach solutions under the optimum sorption conditions, respectively. It was found that the both PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were effective for the recovery of gold from the pregnant leach solution of thiourea. Adsorption activity of the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers was confirmed by new peaks near 1700 cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum of the gold-adsorbed polymers, respectively.

PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed 'hard-rock' mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-'able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been 'crossed with other bloods' until one sees now many distinct 'breeds' in the list. Present-day explosives still have the 'bark' and the 'bite', but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel's dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 had far reaching effects upon many aspects of mining, ventilation being no exception. In this paper, good ventilation procedures are briefly reviewed, and attention is focused on the changes brought about by the new Act. By way of illustration the ventilation system for a typical Pittsburgh Block system is developed and the requirements of the fan determined. This is then solved by an available computer program, and the application is evaluated. Figure 1 represents a projected system for a coal property 1 by 3 miles in plan at a depth of 1000 feet with a coal thickness of 6 feet and desired daily tonnage of approximately 7200 tons on a two-shift basis. Only one half of the mine is shown (north area) with a mirror image mining arrangement to be developed concurrently for the south area. Six working units are projected, three in each area, one on pillar extraction, another developing panel entries and a third on main entry development. A two-split system is used for each working section so that the continuous miner and bolting crews each have a separate split of air, and no equipment need pass through a line brattice. The old requirement of 6000 cfm at the last open crosscut has been increased to 9000 cfm, and for the first time a minimum quantity (3000 cfm) is stipulated at the face thus requiring either line brattice or an auxiliary fan. With the respirable dust requirement limited to 3 mg/m3, the use of a blower system is precluded and exhaust systems are virtually the only choice. Maintaining the line brattice within 10 feet of the working face at all times as required by the new law has a definite effect on the mining cycle and is most difficult at best. In the highly gaseous Pittsburgh seam located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia quantities of 20,000 cfm per split are not uncommon to maintain the methane percentage below the required l%

The mining industry has always been cost-focussed but in recent times mining companies have moved towards obtaining a competitive advantage through the implementation and sustainability of best practice in the areas of improved safety, operating costs, quality and productivity. This is the concept of Value In Use û that mining companies see value generated all the way to the bottom line through improved change, and those changes become an established mine practice. Many mining companies do not have the resources or the knowledge to sustainably achieve such an outcome. This has led to companies looking to their suppliers to deliver measured value to their business through partnership arrangements. Suppliers have been able to leverage their knowledge of products, product applications and services to offer alternative supply agreements that bring greater returns to their businesses while improving supplier/client relationships. Orica has developed such a partnership with Coal & Allied in the form of a Continuous Improvement Program. Coal & Allied is based in the Hunter Valley region of NSW and is the largest coal producer in that region. Both parties are contractually bound to jointly deliver Value In Use projects to Coal & AlliedÆs Hunter Valley Operations and Bengalla mine sites. It is the request of the Orica and Coal & Allied Steering Committees that this paper does not include the details of actual projects or the costs or key performance indicators associated with the program. This is to maintain the competitive advantage to both Orica and Coal & Allied through the implementation of such a program. It is in the writersÆ opinion that this paper does not lose any significance through this restriction as the most important component of the Continuous Improvement Program is not the projects themselves but the methodology behind them. With this in mind the paper will discuss the development of Value In Use offerings, the key aspects of the Coal & Allied and Orica joint program, what is a Value In Use project, how to measure its value, finally why and even more importantly what makes this program is a success.

Ventilation control devices (VCD’s) and bulkheads are critical controls used for managing risk in underground coalmines. Following the Moura No. 2 mine explosion in 1994, the Queensland Mines Department required that the design of VCDs be based on live testing (such as in a mine testing explosion gallery) and more recently on numerical modelling using measured seal material properties. While the stipulated methods represent an idealistic solution, they are not practical to implement as solutions to daily challenges presented in underground coalmines.Not all VCD’s and bulkheads are placed in areas which have been mined to standard roadway dimensions. Operationally, VCD’s may be required to be placed close to intersections or require large dimensionally different areas (eg overcasts and pre-driven recovery road shutters) compared to the live testing or numerical modelling originally undertaken.This paper describes the various structural engineering methods utilised to account for the design of VCD’s where the operational requirements are non-standard. Siting and construction of VCD’s near the entry of cut throughs and geological structures requires additional design considerations. While VCDs constructed from a single material (eg sprayed mining plaster) are relatively straightforward to design, the addition of multiple openings (doors) or large pipes will complicate the structuralanalysis significantly.Temporary bulkheads used for the containment of grout such as for the construction of pre-driven recovery roads in coal mining have a significantly different risk profile to VCDs and should be designed accordingly. Recent failures and near-misses in such bulkheads have highlighted this issuefor the authors.The existence of an Australian Standard for Underground Mine VCDs and Bulkheads would go a long way to addressing many of the issues raised in this paper. Without a single, industry-accepted reference for VCD design, individual mines will have to continueto exercise their best judgements using whatever local expertise is available to them.

This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. Loading and hauling of ore and waste are the key operations of an opencast coal mine and entail a high operational cost. The productivity of a mine can be increased by reducing the cycle time of loading equipment as well as utilizing dumpers optimally. In this paper we discuss the impact of rock type, bucket fill factor, rock fragmentation, the height of the cut, and angle of swing of the bucket on shovel performance. A time study is conducted on shovels in an opencast coal mine with experimental blasts of rocks to assess the impact of different factors on the performance of the shovel. Based on the data, the authors applied multiple regression (MR) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to develop different models for the prediction of the shovel cycle time. Developed models are validated by comparing the predicted data with actual field data. With the help of the best model, the plausible fleet size is determined in order to utilize the shovel and dumper optimally and to improve the performance of shovel–dumper operation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the problems of underground coal mining in the United States, and to develop recommendations for an integrated Research and Development Program aimed at resolving these problems. Specific objectives of the study were as follows: ? To identify the existing inadequacies that have adverse effect on Health, Safety, External Environment, and Productivity. ? To identify opportunities for technological advance s to correct these inadequacies. ? To develop an integrated Research and Development Program designed to accomplish the advances identified. Many of the recommended tasks are dearly long range; this is especially true of those for study of future mining systems. However, funding recommendations in this Report are presented for a 5 -year period, since the developments accomplished during this period will undoubtedly be a factor in the formulation of the follow on tasks. Where applicable, the recommended Research and :Development could include development and test of pilot model equipment.

Several thin film absorber stacks with spectrally selective characteristics were developed by the Bureau of Mines. The stacks consisted of a silicon thick film or a zirconium compound thin film on a reflective thin film of silver. The zirconium absorber films, with the general formula ZrCxOyNz, were prepared by reactively sputtering zirconium or zirconium carbide in argon with small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, or both, or by oxidizing zirconium films in air. A few similar types of films were prepared from titanium. The short-wave absorptance over the solar spectrum, a(s), and thermal emittance at 600 K, e(600 K), of the solar absorber stacks were calculated from room-temperature reflectance data. The values of a(s) ranged from 0.47 to 0.93, e(600 K) from 0.49 to 0.034, and the ratio a(s)/e(600 K) from 1.7 to 34. The specimen with the best combination of properties, a ZrNx-Ag stack, had a solar absorptance a(s) of 0.85 and a ratio, a(s)/e(600 K), of 24. The effect of film thickness and composition on spectral selectivity was determined. An emissometer for measuring normal total emittance up to 800 K and a method for determining a (s), e(T) (hemispherical), and a(s)/e(T) using simulated solar radiation are described. A calorimetric method for measuring a(s) and e(T) (hemispherical) at elevated temperature is also described. Measurements made on several specimens agreed favorably with calculated values.

"Developed countries are in the midst of re-structuring education in minerals-related disciplines as raw materials, once vital to wealth generation, contribute progressively less to the economy. The changing circumstances mean institutions must justify mineral processing by new criteria. After considering what a mineral processor needs to know the ways to deliver are considered. Taking twenty graduates per year to illustrate, one institute could justify this number as a program in a department or school (of whatever grouping of disciplines). A strong research component would make the package additionally attractive. Divide among four institutions and mineral processing is best served in a research centre with delivery taking advantage of multi-centre and distance learning opportunities.INTRODUCTIONThis is one of five plenary lectures at the Congress. I may have preferred a technical subject, as that is what occupies most of my thinking hours, but it is reasonable as an academic that this topic should come to one of us. The fact the topic has not been high on my agenda may provide one advantage: that I can suggest directions free of pre-conceived notions, just as when reviewing the background to a technical article the temptation to select in support of one?s interpretations is resisted. The trick will be to add something new.One reading of the title seems to query whether mineral processing education has a future. (I will refrain at this juncture from defining mineral processing and assume for now we share an understanding of the term.) The proximity of natural and human resources led to the Industrial Revolution and the interaction continues to stimulate and sustain industrial and economic development in many parts of the world. The search for raw materials has historically played a key role in opening frontier areas, with undersea and outer space next. The reason is obvious: raw materials along with food and energy underpin society. Thus mining will remain part of human activity along with the need to pass on the knowledge and skills.What happens over time is resource relocation. Raw materials become exhausted in one area to be replaced by sources elsewhere; the demand for some materials lessens while growing for others. Educational institutions can find themselves with the wrong geography or with staff focussing on the wrong subjects. When this happens the restructuring produces much discussion. This is where we are in parts of the world. Japan, Western Europe and the United States are the prominent examples (Dowd, 1998; Flemings and Suresh, 2001; McDivitt, 2002). Mineral processing is becoming a series of courses in related disciplines: resource engineering, environment engineering or materials engineering. The start of the transition is evident in Canada and Australia, perhaps earlier than expected given the contribution of raw materials to their economies. A common backdrop in the developed countries is social pressure to reduce the impact of the ?untidy? aspects of life, and that includes mining. (This is not new: in classical times the mine face was the preserve of slaves and convicts.) These values are exportable, potentially affecting recruitment into mining schools everywhere."

Never increase, reduce, or remove ventilation without unquestionable, compelling reasons. This rule applies every day as well as when fighting fire, attempting to find survivors, or recovering the mine. Right now in some mine a miner is adjusting a regulator in one place to get more air into another. The chances are the desired result will be achieved. Has the miner done a good thing? NO! Solving the immediate problem reinforces the belief he or she can do it again. That "again" might be, to give but one of many examples, the explosion in Greenwich No. 1 Mine. Robbing the proverbial Peter can be the prelude to disaster in a mine. Reducing the airflow is a common practice when fighting a mine fire. In fact, some people have been taught to do that at MSHA's academy. People who believe that to be proper must be people who never experienced a fire. To fight most fires you have to scramble to get enough air. An explosion demands totally different "thinking". If people are soon to go into the mine, DON'T adjust the ventilation. If teams are in the mine, each affected area must be explored or sealed before making any ventilation change.

By combining the iron reduction process with the usual rotary kiln process, the direct production of metallic zinc from EAF dust is proposed. After thermodynamic estimation and desk-top experiments it is confirmed that the process is hopeful under suitable conditions. In order to get some practical test data the enlargement of the process scale was planned and the bench scale tests were carried on successfully. In these experiments a zinc ingot of PW grade was produced from EAF dust.

A subsequent spin off of the energy shortage is the new life for barite. Over 90% of the barite produced in the world is used as a weighting material in oil well drilling muds. Business is booming; the price of barite has risen; scarcity is imminent, and exploration is going full steam ahead. New barite-producing companies are being formed and many of the barite consumers are considering becoming producers. Prospectors have found a new "love," smaller deposits are being explored, and old deposits, previously rejected, are getting a reappraisal. Even barite tailing piles are being resampled.

Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some two thousand years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. Alan Oshiki (AO) is executive vice president with the Abernathy MacGregor Group. Henry Weingarten (HW) is managing director with the Astrologers Fund Inc. Here is what they had to say.

ABOUT 2 lb. of alumina (aluminum oxide) of high purity is required to produce a pound of metallic aluminum. Projected production of metallic aluminum in the United States is now seven to ten times the peacetime rate a few years ago. In the past, all the alumina for aluminum production in the United States has been obtained from bauxite. Part of the bauxite was mined in the United States--chiefly in Arkansas-and part was imported from Surinam. All of it was chemically treated in the United States to separate the greater part of the aluminum oxide from the bauxite, alkaline solutions being used, in a method known as the Bayer process. The ingredients of the bauxite other than alumina, such as the compounds of iron titanium, and silicon, constitute the tailings from the Bayer-process operation. This product contains sufficient iron to give it a red color and hence it is called "red mud." Lime and soda used in the processing, are also present. Varying amounts of alumina remain in the red mud, depending upon the characteristics of the bauxite, the effectiveness of the treatment, and in particular upon the amount of silica originally present in the bauxite. High-silica bauxites result in high alumina loss in the red mud.

In recent years, heap leaching of gold is becoming wide spread due to low capital and operational costs that allows economically feasible processing of low-grade and cut-off grade ores. Currently, over 30 heap leach projects are operated in Russia. Some of the deposits treated by heap leach methods are almost depleted. Therefore, they will soon require spent heaps detoxification and reclamation. Traditionally, spent heaps are detoxified by chemical treatment. This process is characterized by relatively high kinetics and requires expensive reagents and additional equipment. The main disadvantage of this process is secondary contamination of the solutions by products of detoxification reactions and impurities contained in reagents. If there is enough time, spent heaps can be detoxified by natural degradation. The advantages of the proposed method are low operational costs due to use of existing heap leaching facilities and eliminating the need for chemicals for spent heaps detoxification. Residual concentrations of cyanides and thyocyanates in liquid phase (wet ore) of spent gold ore heaps after detoxification were 0.2~0.3 mg/L. Heavy metals were almost completely removed. The method was successfully used for detoxification of spent heaps at two gold mines.

Major Project Blues Over the last two decades, almost every major project has suffered significant cost overruns, significant schedule delays, and/or poor quality work. Exceptions are rare and most projects that tout being ?On Time and Under Budget? have re-cast schedules, significantly modified scope or revised base estimates. The problem isn?t new. In the late 1980?s the Rand Corporation published a study showing that 80% of all major projects had significant cost and schedule overruns. The problem is not restricted to the Canadian environment, or to a specific industry. It is a global problem.
