Asset Maintenance Readiness (AMR) provides a tailored reliability and maintenance strategy specific to operational needs. AMR delivers reliability and maintenance foundations for the plant and equipment before start-up. Having a dependable reliability and maintenance strategy before start-up is critical, particularly in those first weeks and months during ramp up to stable production. The Asset Maintenance Readiness is the integration of Reliability and Maintenance Engineering analysis/studies at the earliest stages of the new Production System concept and design and during the Capital Project CapEx phases; adding this analysis to the Capital Project CAPEX cost, will have an impact of 2% to 3% of total project cost, but will deliver a good compendium of benefits far from the AMR costs, and those results will be shown upon commissioning and during the life cycle of the plant.

Fatigue is it the newest buzz word or is fatigue a real phenomenon that is creating safety and organisational risk for you? There is no debate that fatigue is natural, and it affects us all, just like gravity; however, there has been much debate on the severity of its impact in the workplace. For many years the impact was not measurable, hidden out of sight and, quite frankly, written off as the infamous ‘operator error’. Over the last several years, advancements in technology have provided safety and health professionals, sleep scientists, fatigue experts and organisations with the ability to monitor and detect fatigue events in real time, as well as predict and monitor increased risk for fatigue events. Caterpillar Safety Services has assembled an extensive and exceptional set of technologies that will provide the best methods and data to measure the impact of fatigue. The effect of the stability and rheological properties of magnetite dense medium on the separation performance of a 6" dense medium cyclone (DMC) is studied with the use of fine density tracers. The tests in which different size fractions of magnetite are used to prepare the dense media reveal that at low medium densities (<1.5 s.g.), the best separation is achieved when using the magnetite with intermediate particle sizes (du3.2=18 11m). At medium densities above 1.5 s.g., however, it is beneficial to use coarser magnetite. With the fine magnetite dense medium, an increase in medium density results in a decrease in separation efficiency. With the coarse magnetite, an opposite trend is observed; the separation efficiency is improved with increasing medium density. An accurate cutpoint control is critical in gravity separation. The cutpoint shift for coarse feed particles is found to decrease with increasing medium stability (density). It assumes values close to zero in a highly stable fine dense medium. When the size of the treated particles is small (<0.5 mm), the cutpoint shift is mainly determined by medium rheology. With increasing medium density, a continuous increase in cutpoint shift is observed.

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company&apos;s shareholders. In the light of the industry&apos;s past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.

The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. "Deeper materials science knowledge from mathematical models and in situ material property sensors will be exploited in next generation factory process controllers to improve productivity and quality. These intelligent control systems will accelerate productivity growth and materials science application through the ease with which they can be modified to accept new materials knowledge and sensors. Carbonization of resin matrix carbon fiber composites, specifically, is a violent solid state chemical reaction with large stresses due to gas pressure, matrix shrinkage, and differences in thermal expansion. The matrix strength falls sharply, then rises again during the process. At least two competing reaction paths are important; the first cleaves methylene bonds, reduces toughness, density and stiffness; the second reforms those bonds, ultimately resulting in aromatic ring condensation that increases density, strength, and modulus. Since these reactions have different temperature dependencies, one can expect to shift the process towards the second path by changing the heating rate, but that change must be accomplished without producing macroscopic interlaminar crack growth. To accomplish this, we employ gas sensors to infer matrix chemical state and acoustic emission to identify microstructural changes and to recognize brittle fracture. The latter does not prevent delamination, but is important in testing models for the causes of delamination and in improving the processing cycle. This paper describes a control strategy to accelerate the process while still lowering the risk of failure.IntroductionDeeper materials science knowledge from mathematical models and in situ material property sensors will be exploited in next generation factory process controllers to improve productivity and quality. Processing methods have been developed empirically and are usually very conservative because the process often fails when any change is made. Apparently minor changes in materials or geometry can produce failures that are difficult to diagnose and correct. We will describe below several essentially unavoidable sources of variability. These are best dealt with by applying materials science to adapt (i.e., closed loop control on materials properties) the process in real time to reduce the effect of unavoidable model idealizations, material variability and environmental noise. The most critical issue in control of the carbonization process control is avoiding catastrophic delamination. The strategy developed below makes use of a priori materials knowledge and real time sensors to accelerate the now very slow process without destroying the material, and without requiring unreasonable resources to determine the statistical properties of the material."

Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. When the United States entered the World War governmental agencies found little definite knowledge available as to the exact capacity of each sulphuric acid plant in the United States to manufacture acid under the stress of a great emergency. It is true that on account of the demand for acid for the manufacture of munitions for the Allies, prior to the entrance of this country into the war, most of the acid plants near industrial centers in the Eastern and Northern States were running at or nearly their maximum capacity, but, . for various reasons, many plants in these States and plants in other districts were not. For a number of years statistics as to the production of acid by the plants of the country were compiled by the United States Geological Survey, but obviously such figures did not give information as to the maximum capacities that might be available for meeting the he.a vy war ·requirements, or as to the steps that would have to be taken to bt-ing these capacities into use. During the summer and early fall of 1917 various attempts were made to obtain the desired information, but no satisfactory or complete data were obtained. Late in 1917, under the authority granted to the Bureau of Mines by the explosives act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines directed A. E. Wells, metallurgist of the bureau, to uiake a complete survey of the situation. Mr. Wells personally conferred with officials of the acid companies and visited most of the acid plants in the North that are east of the Mississippi River. The information obtained through this personal survey, together with that obtained through the ready cooperation of the subcommittee on ncids, and the subcommittee on fertilizers of the Committee on Chemicals of the Council of National Defense, enabled the preparation of a report containing the desired data concerning the sulphuric acid industry. This report was made immediately available to the War Industries Board and to those offices in the War and Navy Depart- ments that were most directly concerned in planning the explosives program and in obtaining the necessary supplies to produce the explosives. Beginning with this survey and report, the sulphuric acid section of the war minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines took an active part in all matters pertaining to the sulphuric acid industry during the remainder of the war. Mr. Wells, the chief of the section, was appointed an associate chief of the sulphur, pyrite, and sulphuric acid sections of the War Industries Board. .Also, by this direct contact with the War Industries Board, the data obtained by Messrs. R. R. Hornor, H. A. Buehler, a.nd 0. Lindstrom, who were in charge, for the bureau, of the investigations concerning the supplies of pyrite and sulphur, were constantly made available to all interested Government agencies. D. E. Fogg, of New York City, was appointed chemical engineer to the sulphuric acid section to make special investigations relating to the acid industry, especially the possible utilization, in an emergency, of those sources of raw material.not then being used. Mr. E. E. Corbett, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was appointed chemical engineer to make investigations concerned primarily ,vith the conservation of acid. Direct and intimate contact with the industry was had through the close cooperation with the committee on acids of the Chemical Alliance, this committee during the greater part of 1918 occupying rooms with the acid section of the bureau. With the ending of the war and the close o:f the active work of the acid section of the bureau, the suggestion was made by many interested parties that a bulletin be prepared giving some qf the fun. damental and most important facts regarding the sulphuric acid industry, including a discussion of the technical :features of the manufacture of acid. During the war the bureau received -a vast number of inquiries in regard to various phases of the industry, a.nd this fact also made such a bulletin seem desirable. Therefore, the present bulletin was prepared to cover the main facts in regard to the industry in this country, including a discussion of the supplies of sulphur-bearing raw materials, the situation of the acid plants, the principal points in regard to manufacturing processes, and the uses of the acid. No attempt has been ma.de to discuss at length the manufacturing processes, as details differ more or less at the different plants and in general are carefully guarded by the acid ·companies. A great deal of the data given in this bulletin may be found in various pub]ications, but this is the first publication in which such data have been assembled and made readily available. Most of the data were obtained directly from observation and from cooperating acid companies or from individuals who had been or are now engaged in acid manufacturing and were liberal and generous in making their information available for publication. Care has been exercised to publish no data that were obtained as confidential by the bureau's representatives. The average acid manufacturer may be already more or less acquainted with most of the information presented in this bulletin, yet it is believed that the bulletin will be of value to those who wish to obtain a. general review of the present condition, both the economic and technical, of the sulphuric acid industry in the United States.

MR. J. J. McIntyre (International Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., and McGi1livray Creek Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., Coleman, Alta): Mr. Burrough&apos;s excellent paper, Metallurgical Coals of the Crowsnest Area, seems especially timely now, when the need for developing iron industries in the west, as well as in the east, is receiving so much attention. His -thorough review of the &apos;coking&apos; industry is an especially valuable contribution, along with which the following brief remarks on coking in the Crowsnest Pass area of British Columbia and Alberta may be in order. When the Crowsnest Pass line of the Canadian Pacific railway was built there were great expectations for the non-ferrous metal industry; quite a number of smelter&apos;s were al-ready in operation in British Columbia and the northwestern United States, and further expansion was confidently expected. The suitability of the medium-volatile coking coals of the Pass for making metallurgical coke had been recognized from the time the fields were first explored. By the time the mines were fairly well developed there was already a market to war-rant the building of coking plants, and a common belief that expansion of the market would require a large coking industry. The first coke production was from plants built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, Ltd., at Fernie, B.C. in 1903, and the International Coal and Coke Company, Ltd., at Coleman, Alberta. These plants were followed by others built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, at Michel, B.C., by West Canadian Collieries, Ltd., at Lille, Alberta, and by Leitch Collieries, Ltd., at Passburg Alberta, and by a plant at Hosmer, B.C.

In 1962, Kondner prepared several papers dealing with hyperbolic stress-strain response of cohesive soils. The following year, Brinch Hansen proposed 80% and 90% failure criteria for stress-strain behavior of cohesive soils. Fellenius was instrumental in popularizing these failure criteria for pile load tests and offered a direct solution equation for the failure load according to the 80% failure criterion. Since the 90% Criterion has been incorporated into the International Building Code, equations for the direct solution of the failure load at the 90% Criterion would be useful to practicing engineers. This Technical Note supplies the derivation methodology for the 80% Criterion and provides expressions to determine the load and deflection at failure for the 90% Criterion.

Several industrial sites suffer from the contamination of soils from heavy metals, which are emitted among others by anthropogenic mining and metallurgical activities. Effective and economic physicochemical technologies for remediation of these sites remain complicated and costly. A new alternative remediation technique is the so-called phytoremediation. This is based on the ability of some plants to accumulate very high concentrations of metals from soils and thus providing the basis for a remediation of the contaminated sites. This technique as an emerging branch of natural biotechnology, has several advantages compared to the sophisticated physicochemical techniques of soil remediation. It is not only environmentally friendly but also its costs are quite low since it is solar driven. Furthermore plants can accumulate metals to such levels that the mineral recovery maybe feasible even in conventional Ni refinery or smelting operations. In this work, thc potential of many plants to accumulate nickel has been investigated in order to identify the species which offer the best phytoremedial potential for nickel contaminated soils in Albania. Field surveys have been made in five nickel-containing sites in order to identify the nickel tolerant species that have spontaneously grown in contaminated soils. Atomic Absorption Spectrometry measurements were carried out on 145 different plants collected. 16 of them were identified as having an hyper ability to accumulate nickel since they contained more than 10 000 mg Ni per kg (DW). Seven taxa are of Alyssum genus and one of Bornmuellera genus of Cruciferae. The highest accumulation of nickel was present in aerial parts of Alyssum murale var. chlorocarpum Hausskn (25 500 mglkg or 2.5%) and Alyssum markgrafli O.E. Schulz (23 700 mg/kg or 2.37%). The seeds germinated are more evidenced at A.m.var. chlorocarpum, about 63%. These plants are suggested as the most promising species to be used for phytoremediation purposes in nickel contaminated soils and phytoextraction of nickel.

The larger Canadian Banks have pursued this offshore business through their multi-national organizations; this reflects both the increasingly international orientation of today&apos;s business environment, and to a degree, the competitive advantage of these offshore developments.The current oversupply situation in mineral markets and the increasing maturity of the Developed World Economy reduces the need for new mining projects relative to growth&apos; in GNP. Those that are brought on stream in the future due to their competitive advantage, will continue to be pursued by lenders and equity investors alike. IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. But it has also had some share of success, such as at Hernlo, which now seems certain to provide some of the lowest cost gold production in the world"

Minor manipulative details, the application of a finer measuring graticule and the reproducibility of the procedure are described and the author accepts with gratitude this ready-made answer to the first and second points of Dr Finkelstein&apos;s comments. Mr Williamson The author is indebted to Mr Williamson for historical background to early experiments with captive bubbles and it is conceded that the original paper described another avenue to an old flotation goal. The field of application is restricted and we would not work with all the material illustrated by Klassen and Mokrousov.1 The particles in Figure 74(a) are far too large and irregular; material in Figures (b) through (d) could be employed for semi-quantitative work in spite of obvious disadvantages; Figure 74(f) represents ideal conditions. We have studied this mineral-collector association in the size range given and results were satisfactory. For larger pick-up values than that illustrated an induction period of more than 0.01 second was required (actually 90 seconds for a maximum bubble load at pH 7.2 with 25 g/t oleic acid!). Mr Slander and Mr Kooij Researchworkers in a practical mineral development laboratory may well ask what contribution yet another micro-technique can make to the problems of large scale ore flotation. The obvious answer is that there can be little or no direct translation of results obtained with a static system comprising air bubble and pure mineral concentrate to a dynamic multicomponent operation. However, for the rapid study of one mineral or variable some small scale apparatus must be employed. In the Anglo American Research Laboratory, the described semi-quantitative pick-up technique has filled a niche and requirement. For ourselves, the system represents a definite advance over the contact angle approach in that samples of minerals conventionally prepared in laboratory or plant may be used, which is a desired step nearer flotation. We bracket this pick-up apparatus with the Hallimond tube1,2 and evidence is now to hand that pick-up curves may often be related to flotation recoveries obtained from this tube with pure mineral samples and from the Fuerstenau glass cell3 with the total ore at low pulp densities. We would not wish to push the comparison of pick-up results past this stage for there is much published development work relating the Hallimond and Fuerstenau equipment to flotation on a larger scale. At the Anglo American Research Laboratory for example, a test in a Fuerstenau cell is often the final integrated step in laboratory investigations into the TORCO process. As these contributors rightly point out, pick-up tests can offer nothing towards the determination of optimum reagent dosage for large scale flotation. This is the function of bench-type flotation cells with up to 2 kg batches of ore. At this level, collector performance and consumption and physical properties of the froth are more comparable with large scale operation. The pick-up cell, Hallimond tube and Fuerstenau cell are essentially equipment from which the effect of control parameters can be derived. For the assessment of collector behaviour, the pick-up approach is rapid and economic and we offer here a pick-up contribution towards the flotation of Witwatersrand uraninite with anionic sulphonate collectors (Fig. 1). A large crystal of the local mineral was not available for contact angle measurements and owing to its low concentration in Witwatersrand gold-bearing reef, a small sample was laboriously obtained by tabling, superpanning and heavy medium separation. The pick-up values of a sized portion were determined by the described procedure in the presence of nine petroleum sulphonate collectors. Responses fell into two categories; "normal" curves (dotted lines) and a group of collectors which were very active at low concentration but showed depression of pick-up at the higher levels. The similarity in form of curves for collectors 1 and 3 was apparent and reagent 3 was found to be simply a diluent of 1. Otherwise, collector performance could not be related to either sulphonate content or molecular weight of the active constituent. However, reagent 2 gave the best performance in a bench flotation cell with regard to overall uranium distribution but, as predicted, reagent 1 yielded the best grades. Later pick-up tests with a similar class of collector have suggested that depression at high reagent concentrations may be due to "bubble armouring" whereby an hydrophilic air-liquid interface is produced which rejects mineral attachment. Prolonged investigations with the same mineral sample have not been required except for the study of uraninite which lasted for more than a year. Variation in pick-up response could not be detected over this period during which the mineral was stored under distilled water. The only visible change was a small efflorescence of lead sulphate, readily removed and decanted off after stirring with a glass rod in the sample tube. In its main role as a "trouble-shooter", the pick-up method is applied to fresh mineral samples taken from a flotation plant and soon discarded or from a current run in the ore-dressing laboratory. After production of a concentrate, a solvent cycle, as described in the original paper, may be required to remove heavy organics or other contaminants as when a sample has been taken from circuits containing detergents, grease or return flotation solutions. This solvent cycle will not remove chemisorbed collectors and we prefer not to work with minerals from flotation tailings or with pick-up cell discards. It has been thought preferable to answer the contributors&apos; other apprehensions with regard to sample preparation, activators, depressants and the physical properties of reagents in another paper on offer to this Journal. It covers pick-up investigations relating to the flotation of nickeliferous pyrrhotite at two Anglo American Corporation Mines, which approach seemed the correct orientation for a reply to another contributor to this paper.

The objective of this contract as to prepare a detailed, readily usable handbook on dust control techniques for longwall mining operations. Information was gathered from available literature, and through contacts with industry and government personnel. The handbook describes those methods of dust control applicable to today&apos;s longwall mining systems, and contains sufficient design elements to assist operators with problems in testing or implementing new control procedures. Complete reference lists are presented at the end of each chapter to direct the reader to additional information.

Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

The western united States is not usually noted for the production of fluorspar; however, many significant fluorspar districts do occur in the Rocky Mountain region and constitute a resource of sizable dimension and major potential. This is particularly true within the area of the West served by the rail lines of the Union Pacific Railroad (see Figure 1). Fluorspar deposits near the Union Pacific have produced over 1.3 million tons of finished fluorspar products from 2.3 million tons of ore. Approximately 80% of this production was of acid-grade and 20% of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. Production of ceramic-grade was negligible. Through the years substantial production has come from eight mining districts. Five of these have produced metallurgical-grade and three acid-grade. The best-known fluorspar producing area in the West is the Jamestown Mining District. It was one of the first producers of fluorspar in the western United States and is estimated to have produced over 500,000 tons of finished fluorspar from over a million tons of ore. The district encompasses approximately 36 square miles in central Boulder County, Colorado, about 9 miles northwest of the City of Boulder. The primary mine planning focus during early study phases of future mining projects is Life of Asset ore production and grade quality, this will always be the situation. While waste schedule optimisation is generally considered in the latter study phases nearing execution for a limited number of schedule periods only and not a true optimisation considering all attributes such as waste destination location, design, cycle time and closure. This can be particularly applicable in large multi-pit bulk mining operations where one approach to meet Life of Asset ore tonnes and grade targets has been to maintain pit development flexibility resulting in large open pit areas and substantial expit Overburden Storage Area (OSA).
