This report contains the papers presented at the Technology Transfer Seminar on Ground Control Aspects of Coal Mine Design held by the Bureau of Mines on March 6, 1973, in Lexington, Ky. Seminar attendance consisted of representatives from the coal mining industry, universities, mining consultants, instrument manufacturers, and local, State, and Federal Government. The purpose of this meeting, one of a series of Technology Transfer seminars, was to provide the coal mining industry with detailed information about recently developed techniques, equipment, and instruments which can be used in the solution of coal mine design problems and to discuss results and direction of research in mine design. The report includes opening remarks by Joseph J. Yancik, Acting Assistant Director--Mining; an overview of the Federal Bureau of mines approach to mine design; three papers an problems associated with the design of panels; five papers on coal mine roof problems; three papers on long wall problems; and the comments made by- the participants on the Bureau-industry panel discussion.

Alabama probably has the most extensive deposits of high-grade flake graphite in the United States and was the largest producer during World War I. Therefore, with the outbreak of World War II, users of flake graphite turned again to Alabama to supply their requirements. Flake graphite is the most important ingredient contained in graphite crucibles used in melting crucible steel and special alloys essential for war purposes. Early in World War II the Army and Navy placed flake graphite on the list of critical war materials. During World War I, when the supply of Ceylon graphite (then in demand) was cut off, large quantities of flake graphite were produced in Alabama, and about 40 mills were built. Most of these were abandoned after the war when imports of the cheaper Madagascar flake (which gradually replaced Ceylon graphite) began to reach this country. With the beginning of World War II, the Madagascar supply was cut off', and consumers were again compelled to look to domestic sources for their supplies. They found only one small mill in operation, that of the Ceylon Graphite Co. in Coosa County, Ala. The Bureau of Mines made a preliminary examination of the Alabama flake graphite deposits in 1940. Samples were taken and tested at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa.

Tungsten, a comparatively new metal, is one of the important strategic war materials. In peacetime, tungsten is widely used as a filament in elec¬tric lamps and electronic tubes and is a vital constituent of some of the most important industrial alloys. High-speed tool steel containing tungsten and stellite alloys containing cobalt, chromium, and tungsten are extremely hard and resistant to corrosion. These alloys and the tungsten carbides are unequaled as cutting tools and in other wear-resistant applications. They play a prominent role in the present era of mass production. Alloys containing tungsten resist oxidation at high temperatures and have been key alloys in the development of modern aircraft. The adaptability of tungsten to new uses is expanding, particularly in the high-temperature range. Domestic production of tungsten has come from a large number of deposits in 17 of the 49 States; but, of the total domestic output from 1900 to 1956, more than 80 percent was produced from mines in North Carolina, California, Colorado, and Nevada. The average tenor of the mined ore was less than 1 percent tungsten trioxide (W03).

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. Phytoremediation is a new low cost alternative technique for remediation of contaminated soils from heavy metals that are emitted by ferrous and nonferrous mining and extracting processes. It is based on the possibility to use several plants that accumulate high level of metals in order to remove metallic pollutants from soils and render them harmless. Phytoextraction is an adjacent new technique that uses these hyper-accumulator plants in order to extract the metals from them using even the conventional smelting or refming processes. In our previous work, an extensive investigation of about 150 plants have been carried and several species were identified that could be used for nickel phytoremediation and phytoextraction because of their high accumulation of nickel. It has been found that five taxa from Alyssum genus specie had the highest ability to accumulate nickel with concentrations more than 10000 ug/g (dry weight) or 1%. The taxa showing the highest accumulation of this metal is Alyssum murale var. chlorocarpum with 28 600 ug/g or 2.86%, a good candidate for Phytoextraction. In this work, in order to optimize the phytoremediation and phytoextraction processes further Absorption Spectrometry measurements and biological studies were carried out to determine the parts of the plants that accumulate the highest amount of nickel and the best biological cycle during which they accumulate the highest amount. The results show that the greatest accumulation of nickel occurred in the leaf material (2.86%) and the least in the roots (0.43%). The investigation of the biological cycle of the genus Alyssum showed that: (1) the seeds germinated between 50 C to 30 0 C and more in 25 0 C; (2) 62.9 % of seeds germinated at A.m. var. chlorocarpum; (3) the emergence is almost continue from March to April; (4) the anthesis occurs from May to July; (5) the ripening of the fruit takes place 30 days after flowering; (6) the dissemination of fruits occurs from September to October. Due to these special characteristics it is reaffirmed that Alyssum murale var. chlorocarpum, as a nickel hyperaccumulator, is the most promising plant to be used for feasible phytoremedation and phytoextraction purposes. Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool to identify and display risks that have the potential for an undesired hazardous event. The output of the analysis are bow-tie diagrams, which are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk. Contrary to their simplicity, a proper bow-tie diagram that maintains its usefulness and clear communication is difficult to build. Over two decades assisting Major Hazard Facilities with bow-tie analysis for Safety Cases, several common mistakes have been identified. This paper aims to highlight those issues with examples and provide improvement strategies. A sample of the most common mistakes are: - overly complicated risk analysis - poorly scoped and defined terms - poor descriptions and justifications - identifying too many dependent controls. Overly complicated risk analysis leads to wasted time in obtaining data for little gain. The bow-tie diagram is only a model. Effort should be redirected into identifying and managing controls that will make a tangible difference to site risk. Broad scopes lead to enormous and confusing bow-tie diagrams for both the user and the workshop team. Defining the scope of the study, the consequence severity of interest and critical control characteristics creates focused workshops and targeted analysis. With more definitive scope, there may be more bow-tie diagrams, however, they are succinct and specific. Well described causes are imperative for clear communication to users, regulators and future bowtie review workshop groups. It is best to use common wording structures and explain the event stepby- step. Also, clearly document any likelihood calculations and use data references where applicable. Identifying all possible controls creates a false sense of security that there are many layers of protection. In reality, most controls are dependent on a single system or person and could all be compromised from a single failure. A definition of a ‘bow-tie’ control is required whereby it must be independent from other controls. Improving the bow-tie analysis process will assist operators in developing meaningful and ‘operational’ bow-tie diagrams to support risk management systems and practices.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.070 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70° C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 to 0.1µg/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 to 0.2 µg/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at three Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars on ergonomics in the mining industry. These seminars were held in December 1981, and covered topics relating to ergonomics and mining in the areas of the man-machine interface, and design of the work environment. This area of research is directed toward reducing accidents traditionally associated with human error.

On 25 August 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the Aerojet Liquid Rocket Company to perform an engineering research program to be completed on 25 May 1972. The program objective was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the underground use of several power sources including but not limited to a closed cycle diesel, electric cable/motor, rechargeable battery/ motor and exhausting diesel for mine shuttle cars, with emphasis on health and safety. This report, Research in Advanced Power Systems for Mining Health and Safety consists of four (4) main parts: (1) Hazards and Safety Analysis of Mine Power Systems, (2) Evaluation of Closed Cycle Diesel Power System for Mine Applications, (3) Closed Cycle Diesel Power System Consumables Compatibility, and (4) Concluding Remarks and Recommendations. The hazards introduced to a mine by shuttle car power system failure modes were evaluated and reported. A "fault tree" analysis was generated for each power system and the probability of death or injury during an eight (8) hour shift and for a week of operation (105 hours) were estimated. Advantages and disadvantages were also reported for each system studied. Aerojet's assessment, based on a "forced decisions analysis," of the four shuttle car power systems as to their relative health and safety is that the exhausting or open cycle diesel is preferred, followed by the closed cycle diesel, the electric cable/motor and the rechargeable battery/motor. The assessment was based on ten parameters pertinent to the health and safety aspects of shuttle cars. Drawing layouts of two typical mine shuttle cars incorporating closed cycle diesel powerplant concepts are included in this report. The performance parameters established for the two concepts are tabulated. A study was made of the logistics involved in transporting and replenishing the consumables needed to operate a shuttle car equipped with a closed cycle diesel. The closed cycle diesel powerplant consumables -oxygen, potassium hydroxide, and diesel fuel - were analyzed as to their compatibility with materials found normally in a gassy coal mine. Spill tests simulating inadvertent leakage of liquid oxygen in a coal mine were performed. A critical evaluation of existing oxygen sensitivity data and the relationship to the use of oxygen on a shuttle car in a coal mine environment is presented.

As a follow-up to a laboratory study, a pilot scale column for the flotation of coarse particles was designed and then tested in two different applications. In the first test, the concentration of a coarse phosphate ore (normally beneficiated by skin flotation in spirals) was carried out in a flotation plant in Florida. In the second pilot test, the column was used as a scavenger cell in the coarse flotation section of a potash beneficiation plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. Particle size of the phosphate feed was of the order of 0.6-1.0 mm and the potash feed 1-3 mm. The column was 1 feet diameter and was fed at rates between 0.5 to 1.4 tph. The effect of operating variables such as air and water flow rates, bubble size, frother concentration, residence time, sparger, etc were evaluated. The most important factors in column performance were found to be bubble size, air flow rate and the thickness of the froth bed. Best results were obtained in the absence of a froth bed, with low air flow rates and with small bubbles. The paper presents comparative performance and discusses details of the column design. Phosphate recoveries in the column were better than 90% whereas the conventional skin flotation circuit normally yields about 60% recovery for a comparable concentrate grade. Potash recovery from the tailings of the conventional flotation circuit was as high as 42% recovery. Particle size distribution of the potash concentrate was coarse enough to meet requirements for potash fertilizer.

Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

"The distribution of turbulence in an industrial scale mechanical flotation cell and its effect on flotation kinetics was studied using a fully instrumented 3m³ cell. The cell was operated at a copper concentrator in Australia with different combinations of airflow rates, impeller speeds and sizes and cell aspect ratio providing a wide range of hydrodynamic conditions. An analysis of the overall flotation cell performance showed that the overall copper recoveries were very similar for the conditions tested. However, by decoupling pulp effects from froth effects it was possible to evaluate whether the changes made affected the pulp zone and/or froth zone responses. The analysis showed that the overall recovery has the potential to be up to 7% higher, if not limited by froth recovery. The cell hydrodynamics were characterised by the overall energy dissipation rate and, to understand the distribution of turbulence within the cell, localised measurements were made using a piezoelectric vibration sensor. By comparing the metallurgical performance of the cell with the different hydrodynamic conditions it was found that the collection zone flotation rate constant was not directly related to overall energy dissipation, as is commonly observed at laboratory scale, where energy is usually only changed by varying impeller speed. In this study, energy dissipation rate was varied using not only impeller speed, but also the size of the impeller and the cell aspect ratio. In these circumstances, the best correlation was found to be between the collection zone flotation rate constant and the distribution of turbulence, i.e. the size of the turbulent zone."

"The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

"The copper mining industry in Chile and perhaps in other countries as well is faced with the challenge to implement the best practices in order to achieve a sustainable and more environment-friendly growth. Relationships between mining industry and society have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. Whereas the ore grade has declined continuously, this has involved an intensive energy and water consumption thus increasing operational costs at different stages of the concentration process. In the case of copper sulphide ore concentration, froth flotation is the main technology used worldwide. The amount of the different chemical reagents used in flotation plants (i.e., collectors, depressants, frothers and modifiers) affects significantly production costs and has a negative effect on the environment as well. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the use of biosolids and their main components (i.e., glucose, proteins and humic substances) as more environment-friendly flotation collectors for chalcopyrite and molybdenite. For this purpose, microflotation tests were conducted in a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, FTIR and zeta potential experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of biosolids with these sulphide minerals. Biosolids and their main components may interact through physical and chemical ways due to different affinities with such sulphide minerals as chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite, which are present in copper sulphide ores. In alkaline pHs, biosolids and their main components make the zeta potential of the sulphide minerals investigated more negative. These results may provide important information concerning the behavior of the main sulphide minerals in the concentration of copper sulphide ores at industrial scale, wherein mill processes could affect their surfaces properties. Therefore, biosolids and their main components may open an opportunity to be used in copper sulphide flotation plants to partially replace conventional reagents, which are more hazardous and less environment-friendly."

Numerous data in the literature confirm that the chemical composition and consumption of grinding media influence electrochemical properties of flotation suspension as well as effectiveness and selectivity of upgrading processes. During a milling process, attrition of grinding media is observed. Depending on the susceptibility to abrasion, the grinding media influence, to a different extent, the redox potential, pH as well as flotation efficiency. As a result, different upgradeability of sulfide minerals is observed. The paper presents laboratory scale flotation results, obtained for the copper sulfide ore from Polkowice Region of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. in Poland ground in the presence of forged steel, highchrome iron and stainless steel as the grinding media. The investigated flotation feed contained 36 g/t (ppm) of silver and 1.86 % of copper. Several flotation tests were conducted using fixed amount of frother and a mixture of sodium ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the collector at three different doses of 75, 100 and 125 g/t. A comparison of the obtained results confirmed that the application of grinding media with different chemical compositions influenced the electrochemical properties of the suspension and recovery of silver and copper in the final concentrate. The highest values of redox potential were observed for the stainless steel as the grinding medium. Moreover, in the presence of this type of grinding media, regardless of the collector dosage, the best silver upgrading was observed. For the forged and high-chrome iron media, the recovery of silver depended on the collector dosage. It is indicated that higher levels of the redox potential, together with smaller amount of iron released from the grinding medium, improve the flotation of the silver-bearing mineral compounds from the copper sulfide ore.

Over the past 30 years, the authors have encountered numerous projects where recognizing the geology, soil properties and groundwater conditions, and considering alternative construction techniques have promoted efficient and cost-saving construction. The construction documents for these projects, produced by various engineering firms, provided basic information on geotechnical conditions. The authors became involved in each project either because there was a problem during design or construction or, as a contractor, won the project because they saw a value engineering opportunity to take advantage of the geologic setting of the project to design and build alternatives to what the designer depicted. Understanding the geologic setting is critical before planning and designing begins. Being able to work with the geology and the materials on site is preferred before specifying more costly and complex solutions, which often require the importing of materials and adherence to unnecessary and/or inappropriate specifications. Failing to understand the geology or not knowing all the techniques available for construction can lead designers to develop solutions that could be inappropriate. This paper presents several examples of value engineering and project performance enhancements developed through knowledge of basic soil mechanics and implementing innovative solutions. History and Background Most people attend DFI meetings, present their experiences, listen to others, and read articles and papers with the hope they can learn from others. Geotechnical engineers and contractors often interface with others in the execution of projects who have, at best, a rudimentary knowledge of geology and soil mechanics. Of course, there is a need for architects, bankers, and regulators, etc., but they typically do not have much interest in the nuances of geotechnical engineering, which relies on both art and science. Thus, significant time is spent educating counterparts in the need for comprehensive subsurface investigation programs and the intricacies of construction in the “dirt,” as they typically refer to soil and rock.

Artificial Intelligence has a long history but is currently coming strongly into focus with new advancements. This leads to questions many people are asking: what exactly is AI, how can it be used effectively in mining operations, and what foundation is required to make AI implementations successful? In mining, many AI applications exist, from drill pattern optimization to predictive maintenance. However, many implementations struggle due to data integration challenges. Mining operations generate large amounts of data from many sources, such as fleet management systems, drill sensors, process control systems, and laboratory results. Unfortunately, this data often exists in silos where it’s difficult to get it out, making AI applications unable to leverage it. Worse still, tools that use AI don’t always provide their data back to the system, creating even further data silos. All these problems make it hard to take advantage of the data at the mine, slowing down and reducing the effectiveness of AI. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to organizing mining data using an AI-ready knowledge graph system. We will first explore the evolution of AI in mining, from early expert systems to modern machine learning applications. Then, we will detail how a knowledge graph can integrate business context, operational data, and AI models into a cohesive system that enables more effective AI implementations across mining operations. The proposed method has been developed considering both the unique data challenges faced by the mining industry, while also considering best practices learned from the AI field at large. By following this approach, it’s possible to better utilize existing data, getting higher quality and more complete results faster, and in a way that’s reusable and composable.

In the dynamic realm of mining health and safety, addressing psychosocial hazards is crucial. Legislative requirements now demand employers navigate this complex terrain, but uncertainty often clouds effective management. The resource industry’s skills in managing physical hazards are showcased in their adaptability in this case study. Integrating the Critical Risk Management framework with organisational psychology, a mining company achieved a transformative breakthrough. They identified and assessed psychosocial hazards and established a sustained and risk based approach to managing these hazards within the workplace. This innovative approach encompasses strategic steps. Key learning from the case study was: - Beyond Bow-tie Analysis: Discover why a linear risk analysis tool, like Bow-tie Analysis, falls short in capturing the dynamic and interdependent nature of psychosocial hazards. - Psychological Safety Power: Learn why psychological safety is vital for gathering accurate data and ensuring control effectiveness. - Dive into how it creates a data-driven foundation for success. - Broadening the Brush: Explore the impact of preloading Broad Brush Risk Assessments, an educational and dynamic hazard-identification tool. Control Mastery: Gain insights into how the Critical Risk Management framework ensures ongoing control monitoring and effectiveness for psychosocial hazards. While this implementation’s outcomes are still in their early phases, promising key indicators such as absenteeism, turnover and cultural engagement have emerged. These metrics are set to experience positive shifts as controls prove adequate. As the conference nears, we anticipate having data to showcase these transformative results. Join us in this illuminating presentation as we journey toward a safer, more psychologically resilient workplace.
