"Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. "We have recently proposed a new ""EQ Coating"" bond coat system to solve the problem of secondary reaction zone (SRZ) formation caused by bond coats applied on the hot section components of modem jet engines. A viable EQ coating alloy was previously found for a representative znd generation superalloy, TMS-82+. It would be ideal if the same could be done for a representative 5th generation superalloy, TMS-173. In this paper, we will show that the coating with the best oxidation resistance in the EQ system of TMS-173, although possessing considerably better resistance than TMS-173, did not have sufficient oxidation resistance. In order to improve the oxidation resistance of the EQ coating for TMS-173, we have ventured into ""Pseudo-EQ coatings"". A diffusion couple between the Pseudo-EQ coating and TMS-173, after 300hrs at 1100°C, had a 0-15µm IDZ, but no SRZ. A diffusion couple between a conventional coating and TMS-173 formed a 80-150 µm SRZ. After a 1 hr oxidation test at 1100°C, the PseudoEQ coating formed a thinner oxide layer than the EQ coating, but still contained NiO and spinel. Aerospace"

Detailed process oriented characterisation on representative samples from plant survey of the slag flotation plant belonging to Aurubis, Bulgaria has been realised in order to evaluate the mineralogical occurrences of Cu, Ni, Mo and Co bearing phases. The slag subjected to flotation consisted in majority of fayalite, magnetite-iron oxides and a glass-like phase. Ni and Mo have been found to be closely associated to magnetite and fayalite. The tailing from the slag flotation has been subjected to sulphation roasting followed by water leaching as a hydrometallurgical means to recover the remaining Cu, Mo, Ni and Co. Based on the various sulphation roasting conditions (acid dosage, duration, temperature) copper, nickel and cobalt were brought to solution to a different extent. Molybdenum was the most difficult to be rendered soluble due to its close association with iron, suspected to form an insoluble compound with it. Sulphation roasting performed at 350ºC has secured the best extraction degree for Cu, Mo and Co, while maximum recovery of Ni has been documented when roasting was done at 150°C. The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to review the air and water monitoring requirements of five Federal environmental acts (the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and to compile information on the currently available monitoring instruments. A literature review of the acts and their associated regulations was conducted to determine applicability to the mining industry as well as any air and water monitoring requirements. In addition, an industry search and literature review was performed to assess the instrumentation available to comply with the monitoring regulations. Based on this research, the instruments are classified by general applicability to air, surface water, or ground water monitoring, then catalogued by monitoring parameters. A discussion is provided on recommended and innovative monitoring techniques.

Geometallurgical modelling of an orebody provides benefits to a mine by gaining a better understanding of the ore characteristics and how they affect the performance of the concentrator. With this knowledge, plant operating conditions can be adjusted to optimise throughput and recovery in advance of the arrival of particular ore types. Therefore, it is extremely important that the origin of the ore being processed is known as accurately as possible. Depending on the homogeneity of the ore characteristics, reliance on assumptions about stockpile residence times, scheduling and material handling can render the best geometallurgical models useless.The solution adopted at Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine was to utilise Metso SmartTags™ and in-house expertise to develop a system that continuously and accurately links geotechnical and lab data from the mine to the performance of the plant. This application presented several unique opportunities and challenges. For example, this was the first installation of a SmartTag™ system for geometallurgical modelling in an underground mine. Challenges included the fact that the system installation is routinely subjected to temperatures below -20°C.The system was installed and commissioned in early 2013 and has been operating continuously since. Kittilä has begun to see the benefits of the system, with an increased understanding of how different ores are processed in the concentrator. Other advantages include the ability to alert operators about the arrival of difficult ores and a better understanding of the ore handling systems.This paper describes the installation and use of the system at Kittilä and details some of the geometallurgical relationships that have been developed using the data collected so far.CITATION:La Rosa, D, Rajavuori, L, Korteniemi, J and Wortley, M, 2014. "This paper describes the modeling techniques and the experimental and computer results for two casting processes that are under development and optimization. These processes are described as follows:1) Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) during casting of Ti-6Al-4V round ingots using the plasma arc cold hearth melting (PAM) process: The purpose of EMS is to establish a singlemelt PAM process capable of consistently producing as-cast ingots without helium porosity and also having no need for surface conditioning prior to secondary processing.. The modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, fluid flow, and heat transfer equations, and mesoscopic modeling of the grain structure.2) Casting of Ti-6Al-4V slabs using the single-melt PAM process: The purpose of slab casting is to improve yield by eliminating an intermediate blooming step for converting round ingots to slabs. The modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of fluid flow and heat transfer equations. The effects of pouring and mold temperatures on the pool and temperature profiles were studied. Also, the torch effects (such as the torch standoff and its traversing path) on the pool and temperature profiles were investigated and the best-case scenario was used in the experiments. Evaluation results at RMI Titanium Company showed that the plates made from the slabs met the mechanical properties and microstructure requirements.Acknowledgment. Adopting environmentally acceptable practices in New Zealand is a crucial requirement for mineral wealth development. Recent planned expansions in the coal and gold industry have increasingly placed mining in the media spotlight. A lack of appropriate standard environmental guidelines has resulted in inconsistent responses and assessments of current and proposed mines. These inconsistencies have lead to delays in decisions on developing economic mineral deposits that may have only minor short-term impacts, and have also allowed unacceptable environmental management practices to continue elsewhere. A research collaboration between CRL Energy, Landcare Research, University of Canterbury and University of Otago aims to provide regulator groups and the mining industry with a unified approach to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991,the legislation that largely drives the nationÆs environmental policies and guidelines. The tangible outcome of this research program will be water quality and impact management guidelines integrated into a decision-making framework. The result of this unification will assist in the development of viable mineral deposits and minimise environmental impacts. The framework will be derived from a synthesis of three objectives. Objective 1 identifies potential water quality impact. This objective is based on a targeted geochemical study of the lithology and waterways of the West Coast and Southland regions. Objective 2 categorises the degree of impacts on the ecology of receiving aquatic ecosystems and determines the processes that drive aquatic ecosystem recovery. Objective 3 identifies best strategies to sufficiently manage impacted ecosystems, and to prevent future unacceptable impacts. Wide consultation with representatives of the mining industry and regulator groups will occur frequently during the development stages of the framework. It is anticipated that this multidisciplinary approach will provide a robust and coherent, standardised system that will assist in achieving industry and environmental targets.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. Concrete reinforcing requires coordination among many roles: structural engineer, estimator, detailer, fabricator, installer and others. The methods used to define and represent concrete reinforcement elements and assemblies in building information models is crucial in determining the efficiency of sharing data among BIM platforms and the effectiveness of using the carried data in production planning, fabrication and site work activities. Starting from the information items that are required to be provided by BIM platforms, as defined in earlier work, we have developed the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) bound Concepts and Model View Definitions (MVDs) for concrete reinforcement. Furthermore, in coordination with software developers, we propose guidelines for best practices for concrete reinforcement modeling. Implementing these guidelines by software providers will improve reinforcement modeling with regard to various aspects of reinforcement products like geometric representation, placement, and property specifications. The proposed approach is selected as a way to improve functionality of the shared data for production planning, fabrication, project management, and site activities. Guidelines for assigning information to rebar type and instance definitions as well as to rebar elements and assemblies are provided. An efficient method of sharing geometry and property sets among rebar instances of a rebar array is also defined.

While significant progress in underground construction engineering has occurred in the past few decades, a number of fundamental deficiencies persist regarding the recognition, prediction, and mitigation of underground construction hazards associated with complex geological conditions in rock and soil works, such as tunnelling. Many of these shortcomings could be addressed by improving geomechanical models which, in turn, would provide more realistic frameworks for determining input parameters for design analysis. This would improve predictions of construction efficiency for tunnelling and the formulation of more accurate modelling techniques (2D, 3D and 4D) required to optimize the design of engineered rock structures. This research focuses primarily on the issues related to forepole temporary tunnel support within weak rock masses. This research attempts to determine how best to numerically model forepole support. The behaviour and mechanics of forepole support has not been quantified and/or optimized. As well, there is a lack of in-situ and/or laboratory forepole and weak rockmass interaction parameters available. In terms of numerical modelling, there is a lack of understanding of the use of proper interaction parameters associated with the forepole and the rockmass. The parametric study that has been conducted by the authors demonstrates the influence of each of the forepole-rockmass interaction parameters and their sensitivity. Introduction

"Introductory Statement:In melting the nonferrous metals and alloys for foundry and rolling-mill work, even with the best practice, there is always a loss, due principally to oxidation. Melting losses are a serious source of financial loss in brass and bronze practice, but they are especially serious in the case of aluminum and its light alloys because of the relatively high price of aluminum. The indications are that the melting losses in many aluminum foundries of the United States are at times high, and in some plants (especially where certain furnaces are used) they are entirely too high when compared with the average practice. The fact that the oxidation losses in melting aluminum and its light alloys are high is well known, but it is doubtful whether the factors governing the most suitable methods of melting for a minimum of dross are equally well known. The metal losses involved in melting are worthy of especial attention now because of the rapidly growing importance of the aluminum industry.Factors in the operation of furnaces which affect metal and fuel losses:The essential requirements in the commercial melting of any metal or alloy are that the melting losses should be low, the melting should be rapid, and the melting cost should be low. Certainly it may not be possible to obtain these requirements in any furnace selected at random, and it follows that the design and the operation of furnaces for melting different metals are subjects that warrant the most extensive study and tests. As a general rule, in the industrial operation of furnaces, run on aluminum and aluminum alloys, an effort is made to keep the dross and oxidation losses as low as possible. In attempting to hold dross losses low, numerous factors involved in metal melting may be overlooked, or at least disregarded, and the net practical result may be that the furnace is exceedingly wasteful of fuel. In the case of aluminum and its light alloys, the effect of increasing the temperature of melting, at least in an atmosphere containing free oxygen and nitrogen, is to increase the net melting loss."

This paper examines some of the important aspects of mineral taxation policies and practices, with reference to the mining tax regimes of selected Pacific Rim countries (see Tables 1 and 2). The following subjects are addressed:what is æmineral taxationÆ?, basis for mineral taxation, types of mineral taxes, objectives of the mineral taxation regime, best practices, and mineral royalties. Many countries, in some cases with the encouragement and assistance of international funding agencies, are actively assessing the international competitiveness of their mining tax regimes with a view to attracting investment. However, these countries recognise that the mining tax regime is not the only consideration that is taken into account by prospective investors. The countryÆs geological prospectivity, physical infrastructure, labour force, political risk, and regulatory system are also important factors in the investment decision making process. Although it is probably true that an attractive mining tax regime will not necessarily attract mineral investment, there is a real possibility that an unattractive regime can drive away investment. For example, Hugo Dummett, general manager for discovery at BHP, hinted recently that BHP could cease exploration in Russia in the absence of positive tax changes. Dummett is reported as saying that if taxes æend up being as onerous as they are now, we really have to rethink why we are hereÆ (Mining Journal, London, November 27, 1998).

Commissioning a mineral processing plant has always been a challenging task. The process includes pre- operational verification, dry and wet commissioning, and a gradual ramp-up to full production, all of which must be executed within the shortest possible timeframe, requiring numerous highly interdependent tasks to be conducted concurrently. This phase is under scrutiny by shareholders, corporate management, and other stakeholders who are keen to see a return on investment as the operation starts yielding results. Despite extensive documentation in the literature highlighting its significance, the impact of the commissioning phase remains underestimated in contemporary mining projects. This paper provides an overview of the commissioning process and its associated challenges before focusing on a critical success factor: building a dedicated commissioning team with the required competencies and personality profiles. The roadmap to achieving an efficient plant start-up is outlined. Drawing on over 15 years of experience with more than 20 concentrator commissioning and start-ups, a general framework is presented to maximize success. This method emphasizes the crucial role of the operation and metallurgy team in supporting these projects. Finally, insights from Soutex’s involvement in multiple start-ups are shared, offering lessons learned that emphasize best practices and challenges encountered in expediting the ramp-up process while maintaining high Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards.

"The aim of this paper is to analyze the creep behavior of a Portuguese soft soil stabilized with binders in one-dimensional conditions, based on oedometer creep tests. The study focuses on the analysis of the effect of the binder content and binder type on the creep behavior of a stabilized soil. The results show that the best binder type for this soil, in terms of creep behavior, is composed of Portland cement and fly ash with a dry weight proportion of 75/25, as this promotes the development of secondary pozzolanic reactions. The results also show the decrease in the secondary compression index with the increment of the binder content, since it promotes an increase in the cementation bonds between soil particles. The general analysis of the results shows a clear dependence on C??and qu, until values of qu of 1500 kPa; after that this relationship is negligible.INTRODUCTIONThe geotechnical structures (such as embankments, dams and buildings) built on organic soils exhibit notable creep deformations, which increase the maintenance and exploitation costs and can even compromise their functioning. To attenuate the creep effects of the soft ground, some improvement techniques are frequently used, such as preloading or reinforcing the soil foundations with vertical rigid inclusions, like concrete piles, stone columns or deep mixing columns (DMCs). However, the installation of DMCs in the soft ground induces (via the arching effect) a transfer of stresses from the soft soil to the DMCs, which causes an increase in the creep settlement on the DMCs (Venda Oliveira et al. 2011).Notwithstanding the fact that the creep behavior of clays has been the object of several studies (Leroueil et al. 1985; Mesri and Castro 1987; among others), the study of the creep behavior of soil-binder admixtures has been practically ignored by the scientific community. The few studies on this theme have revealed that a stabilized soil’s creep behavior is dependent on: the type of binder (Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the binder content (Correia 2011; Bobet et al. 2011; and Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the stress level applied during the creep phase (Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the organic matter content of the natural soil (Venda Oliveira et al. 2012; 2014), and the curing conditions (humidity, vertical stress applied during curing, and curing time) (Correia 2011; Venda Oliveira et al. 2012).The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the creep behavior of a soil-binder admixture, by examining the results of oedometer creep tests. The study focuses on the analysis of the effect of the binder content and binder type on the creep behavior of a stabilized soil. Additionally, the creep behavior is correlated with the effective vertical yield stress and the unconfined compressive strength (UCS)."

"The aim in flotation systems is to control the grade and recovery of the product., numerical method or sampling and analysis is used to achieve this goal. Weakness of measuring instruments, lack of process knowledge, deficiencies in management and data processing in the control of flotation cells, has led the academic and industrial units to use numerical models. In this regard, using the results obtained from the experimental design carried out in the DTP line of Gol Gohar industrial and mining complex, a regression model was developed based on the analysis of variance. To present this model, after variance analysis of factors and interactions, all models were investigated and the final model was created based on 75% of the data. The model was tested with the remaining 25% of the data to confirm the goodness of the fit. The coefficient of determination for training and testing resulted 71% and 74%. Moreover, a feed forward back propagation neural network with different layers and neuron was used to model the results. The best network structure was 6-27-1 and the coefficient of determination for this network was 99% and 98% for training and test respectively. Given the complexity of neural network models and the relatively low accuracy of the regression model, neural network has a priority assuming we have access to a specialist. In addition, the results obtained from neural network can be used as expert systems to control and optimize the flotation cells.INTRODUCTIONThe primary objective of the flotation cell control is to maintain the product's (in this case tailing) recovery and grade, which represents the index for process efficiency and product quality. This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

"The ball mill performance relies on impact grinding, but it has disadvantage of the lower efficiency when the ore is finer; while tower mill relies on friction shear affection with high energy efficiency, which is considered to be one of the most potential fine grinding equipment all over the world. Generated by the agitator device, the internal media movement is complex because of comprehensive interaction of screw mechanism, cylinder structure and adjacent media, which is the key factor of grinding process. But the kinematics parameter ,such as speed, acceleration, stress and so on, of media motion cannot be obtained through traditional laboratory test method, which restricts deeply research on finer grinding mechanism seriously. In order to solve this problem, characteristics of media motion in tower mill is studied via the discrete element method. Coefficient of restitution, coefficient of static friction and coefficient of rolling friction are the key parameters affecting the media movement, which were calibrated by stacking angle test firstly. A 3kW tower mill is established as the model for simulation. At last one appropriate simulation strategy is selected to increase simulation accuracy. The characteristic of media motion is obtained based on the computer simulation analysis: macroscopically, the media in tower mill is a dynamic equilibrium state generally accompanied by spiral up and down movement all the time. And it has been found that the maximum lifting height is proportional to the rotation speed of agitator shaft. The velocity of media at the edge of screw stirrer is biggest, while the velocity of media near the cylinder wall is smaller, so the grinding performance between the two ring areas is the best. The rotational speed of agitator shaft and media filling ratio are the two most important operating parameters in tower mill. The impact curve of two main operating parameters on the grinding intensity and energy efficiency are obtained. All these can provide theoretical basis and technical support for operating parameters setting of industrial tower mill."

"Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. Sommaire - Le gîte de 12.1 Mt de sulfures massifs de Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag Brunswick No.6 est localisé entre deux formations volcaniques felsiques sous-marines situées près de la base du Groupe de Tetagouche d’âge Ordovicien Moyen. Le mur consiste en roches pyroclastiques rhyodacitiques (Formation de Nepisiguit Falls) tandis que le toit consiste en une séquence de coulées, de brèches et d’hyaloclastites de composition rhyolitique (Formation de Flat Landing Brook); la différence d’âge entre les deux est de moins de 3 m.y. Le gisement Brunswick No. 6 est un gîte autochtone proximal comprenant un corps de sulfures massifs clairement zoné ainsi qu’une zone cuprifère basale qui passe progressivement à un stockwork de filonnets de sulfure en profondeur (feeder). Les sulfures massifs sont abruptement surmontés d’une unité laminaire de chert et de magnétite dont l’extension par delà le gisement est régionale. Le gisement affecte la forme d’une quille (fourreau) résultant d’un patron d’interférence F1F2. Plusieurs des structures épigénétiques du stockwork et des patrons d’altération de l’encaissant ont été transposés par la déformation ductile hétérogène ainsi que par le métamorphisme régional au faciès des schistes verts. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. L’indice d’altération (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) et l’indice des métaux usuels sont les outils d’exploration les plus appropriés dans ce gisement."
