The following procedure was used to determine cut-off grades: define the orebody profile; plan the stope layout and quantify the work involved; formulate equipment-performance norms; calculate unit costs; input process recoveries and metal prices; and calculate the cut-off grade. Use of the method is illustrated using data from a copper mining complex in India. Results from the study led to the following conclusions for underground mines in general. Cut-off dependent costs vary significantly with the stoping method employed, orebody thickness, the degree of mechanisation and the working efficiencies of the workforce and equipment. This applies even within the same deposit. Sub-level stoping and its variants can be operated at a lower cut-off grade than cut-and-fill and its variants. Thinner orebodies affect cut-off grades adversely, but with thinner orebodies very little further reduction in cut-off grade can be achieved once a certain minimum width has been exceeded. For the same stoping method and in the same mine the cut-off grade varies with the degree of mechanisation. Labour-intensive methods require higher cut-off grades. An allowance for working efficiency should be made when calculating cut-off grades. Higher process recoveries allow a significant lowering of cut-off grades

WHEN I was asked to prepare, for presentation at the 1938 Annual Meeting of the Institute, some data concerning low-discharge grinding at the Sylvanite mill, it seemed entirely reasonable to expect to have at my disposal the results of at least four full months' operation after the last unit, as then proposed, was installed. Delays in delivery of equipment, nevertheless, shortened the interval, as will be shown herein. In submitting the data contained in this discussion, I wish distinctly to state that the intention is not to claim that final conclusions can be reached at this time concerning our operation. Test periods, in certain instances at least, have been too short for this purpose, although some, where so stated, have been extended through March and April. It is hoped, however, that an advantageous trend in practice can be shown and that the experience related may be of interest to others who are now operating, or who are considering the operation of, low-discharge grinding mills. In the plant under review, four mills are in use: one primary and three secondary. Present mill capacity (grinding, as shown by screen test, about 99 per cent through-200-mesh and approximately 88 to 89 per cent minus-325-mesh with infrasizer giving about 90 per cent of the latter) averages about 525 tons per day. A brief description of each unit will be given and comments will also be made relating to operation. This will be followed by certain test data from which, in conclusion, operating results are summarized.

The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for decision making when considering the use of three heading gate roads in Australian underground coal mines.There are currently 30 underground longwall mines in Australia with all but two employing two heading gate road longwall layouts. The volumetric capacity of these two heading ventilation circuits is evidently viable in typical block lengths and in low to moderate gas regimes. However, in gassier regimes, potential longwall production rates of 10 Mt/a, and or where block lengths are being extended to well beyond historical norms, a conventional two heading U circuit may not be adequate. Other than seam gas emission, block length and production dependent heat loads together sealed area management requirements also have to be considered.The two mines currently employing three heading gate roads have the opportunity to revert to two headings at any time but, based on operational experience to date, have not done so due to the consequential reduction in gas management capacity and lower production rates associated with gas delays and limitations on tailgate access.Although there are a number of alternative two heading longwall circuits available and employed worldwide, the custom and practice of promoting inert goaf atmospheres in most Australian coal mines to mitigate the risk of catastrophic gas explosions and spontaneous combustion often prevents the use of gas loaded bleeder systems. In this respect, Australian underground coal mines may be considered the safest in the world.The current situation is that three heading gate roads have been proven successful in Australian conditions, albeit at additional cost, where two heading ventilation circuits cannot manage net seam gas emission to the ventilation system at the production rates required. The responsibility and scope of the Industrial Engineering Department, as organized at the Jeffrey mine, has been broadened to include any study, project or report that could result in more effective use of men, materials and equipment. Although still emphasizing wage incentives and co t reduction, much more varied work is now done, consistent with the in-.creased complexity of industry. Additional activities now include production, maintenance and inventory control improved job evaluation, packaging, labour utilization studies, technical sales liaison, mining, milling and service department n1ethods, plant layout, and specialized project analysis. Additional techniques include the extensive use of work .sampling and standard data. A recent trend has been toward increased emphasis on industrial relations, both in introducing change to the men and in providing requested explanations to Union stewards and officers. These new responsibilities have resulted in the development of specialists in some rather narrow industrial engineering fields, as well as the necessity for industrial engineering assistance in supervisory and job training.

A FEW years ago, the Ventilation Committee established the practice of presenting one topic each year for discussion at the annual meeting. The practice has met good response on the part of committee members and I suggest that it be continued. The topic chosen for this year, "Underground Anemometry," is a topic which has bothered me for more than 20 years. It seems to me that the coal industry is content to rely on slipshod methods for measuring the rate of flow of air underground, so I prefaced my discussional charge to committee members with the statement that I regard air measurements made in the usual way, with hand held anemometer, as no good. Agreements and disagreements came in from more than a dozen engineers, some of whom are with operating companies, coal and metal; some with manufacturers; others with government agencies.

Although chromite deposits occur in California , Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming , Pennsylvania, Maryland , New Mexico , North Carolina, Alaska, and the Phillippine Islands , less than 1 percent of the ore used in the United States is obtained from these deposits . Most of the ore in peacetime has been supplied by imports from South Africa, New Caledonia, Turkey, and Cuba . The mineral chromite , the most important chromium ore , is an isometric spinel with an ideal composition of FeO Cr2O3 , but commercial chromite has the variable composition (Fe , Mg) Oʻ (Cr , Al , Fe) 203. Chromite has a black color , a specific gravity of 4.4 , and a hardness of 5.5 . In thin section the color is reddish -brown to black . Chromite occurs in dunite and pyroxenitic ultrabasic rocks , which are composed of iron- magnesium silicate minerals such as olivine , saxonite , serpentine , and enstatite . These are also the gangue minerals . Com mercial ore occurs at random in the country rock in kidney- or lens - shaped deposits , which have no apparent relationship to each other . Stringers , veins , and bands often cut the country rock without regard either to fracture or to other deposits . Some beach sands , such as those in southern Oregon, contain chromite .

Among the investigations that the Bureau of Mines is conducting witha view to increasing efficiency in the utilization of fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government is an investigation of the processesthat take place in a foundry cupola during a melt. Some observations on the results of cupola tests of cokes at the Government fuel-testing plant in St. Louis, Mo., the coke being fromcoal from many coal fields of the United States, have been stated in a previous bulletin.s Especial attention was given to the meltinglosses that resulted from the use of different grades of coke, light and porous or heavy and dense. These losses amounted in one instance to 52.5 per cent of the iron charged and showed, in convincing manner, the need of exact information in regard to conditions in the fuelbed of the cupola.b Melting losses of iron have been fully appreciated but little under-- stood. The fact that these losses were possible with either light or heavy coke led to the belief that by using small charges 80 placed that. melting would take place in that zone of the cupola where the highest heat and the smallest percentage of oxygen prevailed and by confiningall melting to this zone these losses would be eliminated and the economical use of practically any coke produced for metallurgical purposes would become possible. This widening of the field from whichcoke might be drawn for foundry purposes would serve to place the foundryman in an independent position as regards his source of supply, and would tend to conserve the better grades of coking coals, which are being rapidly exhausted, by making the poorer grades available for mixing with them. In order to investigate conditions within a cupola, the Bureau of Mines as a first step decided to install a commercial cupola, to sample the gases during their travel from the tuy~res upward, and to determine the temperature of the fuel bed.

Sponsored by the National Coal Association, Edison electric Institute, American Public Power Association, National Ash Association, and the Bureau of Mines, the symposium featured 23 formal presentations by leading experts from Europe and the United States on all major phases of ash production, utilization, and research. Over 500 industrial, academic, and government representatives from Europe, Canada, and the United States attended the first large symposium ever held in this country on fly ash utilization and technology, March 14-16, 1967, at Pittsburgh, Pa. Sponsored by the Edison Electric Institute, the National Coal Association, and the Bureau of Mines, the symposium featured 27 formal presentations by leading reports from the United States and Europe on all major phases of fly ash production, utilization, and research. Representing the three sponsoring organizations were Edison Electric Institute, James D. William- son, The Dayton Power and Light Co.; National Coal Association, James R. Garvey, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc; and Bureau of Mines, Harry Perry. Symposium chairman was John H. Faber of the Bureau of Mines. Gerard C. Gambs, Consolidation Coal Co., addressed the opening session. Moderated by Mr. Garvey, President and Director of Research of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., the opening session was devoted to a discussion of the nature of the fly ash problem, including availability, specifications, and limitations on its use. Subsequent sessions covered Fly ash marketing, fly ash utilization in concrete and masonry products, specialized uses, and recent developments in basic fly ash research. Others serving as session chairmen were Oscar E. Manz, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, University of North Dakota; Mrs. Katharine Mather, Chief, Petrography and X-ray Section, Concrete Division, U.S. Army Engineers Waterways Experiment Station; Mr. Williamson, and Mr. Perry.

Contour blasting is commonly performed by employing linear charges decoupled from the boreholes. This method is common in surface and underground excavations, either for civil or mining purposes. To achieve the best results in terms of rock breakage and respect of the excavation profile, blasting theory suggests that charges should be inserted coaxial to the holes to grant uniform distribution of the explosive energy, therefore obtaining a uniform radius of damage. Nonetheless, due to readiness of operations or lack of availability of specific products on the market, non-coaxial charges are often employed in blasting practice. Non-coaxial charging methods include the employ of high-power detonating cord (40 to 100 g/m), low-power detonating cord connecting small-diameter cartridges (commonly 10 g/m detonating cord priming 1” cartridges) or string loading (a thin layer of bulk emulsion pumped with controlled flow and controlled extraction of the injecting rod). This research focuses on evaluating the effects of the first two charging methods on the quality of final walls in open pit and underground operations. Different drilling geometries and charging configurations were applied to both quarrying and tunnelling blasts. The half-cast factor, the overbreak and the underbreak were evaluated as control indicators. Rock quality designation and rock mass rating were used to classify the rock mass. The research was aimed to push contour blasts to their limits, observing for which geometry and charge configuration the blast lost its design threshold with respect to the final wall for every given rock mass. Results show the operational limits of non-coaxial charges encountered in the rock masses object of this study. In good-quality rock, smooth blasting with decoupled linear charge of 40 g/m can be extended to a spacing S = 22Øf with little or no detectable drawbacks in terms of final wall quality, in contrast with theoretical formulae for the determination of the radius of damage. On the other hand, when the rock is poor, any quality of the final wall is hardly achieved at all, in spite of any care in the details of execution of smooth blasting. Martabe gold and silver mine is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste from the excavations is a by-product to be scheduled and used for construction of the tailings storage facility (TSF). These plans need to be aligned to ensure the tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. The TSF embankment construction includes potentially acid forming (PAF) waste that needs to be progressively sealed and rehabilitated to meet the closure requirements of the future.The mine is situated approximately 3 kilometres north of the township of Batangtoru in a seismically active zone between the off-shore subduction zone and the trans Sumatran fault. The mining operation currently includes two open cut pits with a third in development stage, an integrated TSF and dualpurpose valley-fill type waste rock storage facility (WRSF) and TSF embankment. Mine waste is used in construction of the WRSF / TSF embankment, including PAF waste rock, which needs to be scheduled for optimal use in construction activities in a manner that mitigates future acidic and metalliferous drainage (AMD) risks (Pearce and O’Kane, 2017).The Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans must satisfy both optimal pit development to maximise NPV and suitable delivery of waste for effective TSF construction matching the rate of rise of tailings, and consider AMD management, progressive rehabilitation and ultimately effective sustainable mine closure. Orano Mining Somaïr uranium treatment plant (Niger) uses a pugging-curing process to leach uranium. Sulfuric acid, nitrates and water are added to the finely grinded ore in a rotary drum to leach uranium bearing minerals and solubilize uranyl sulfate ions. Reagents, sulfuric acid and nitrates, are the main OpEx of this process step. The economical optimization of their addition requires a thorough knowledge of the ore behavior in solution with these reagents. Orano Mining technical direction and Somaïr laboratories developed a model to predict the curing process uranium recovery surface with a limited number of parameters. Experimental laboratory work to fit the model needs to be done for each type of ore which can require a lot of metallurgical tests and would be time consuming. In order to optimize the required number of tests, an innovative experience plan was designed in parallel to the development of this model reducing the required number of tests to only eight. Once the parameters of the models are correctly fit, the comparison between the estimated values and the actual values for the uranium recovery is excellent (less than 0.5% error in average). Associated with an updated cost model of the curing process, this new recovery model helps the plant operator find the best set of reagents to maximize curing process profitability in the Somaïr plant day after day.

ABSTRACT Sooner or later, every producing mine faces the question of fill. This paper invites consideration of mill tailings as an economical, efficient, and quantitatively adequate source of such fill. Some of the advantages, disadvantages, methods of utilization, and methods of treating mill tailings for sand recovery are covered. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SAND FILL DISREGARDING economic com-promise, that material which supports the greatest applied load with the least compression is the best choice for fill. Table I, reproduced from U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 60, is offered as evidence of the adequacy of hydraulically placed sand. Table II gives the results of tests made in an effort to determine the reason for the difference between load hearing qualities of dry-placed and hydraulically-placed sand. From these, it would appear that hydraulic placing gives a denser initial packing, with corresponding higher, and faster development of, load bearing qualities. Assuming this to be true, then if sand from mill tailings can be placed underground economically, it is the superior fill material. Table III summarizes cost data available. The most cursory glance through the available references (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) will show .that the major benefit from the adoption of sand fill is a decrease in the non-productive fill ?cycle of a working place. This, it is estimated, increases the output of an individual stope by from 25 to 50 per cent. The advantage of reducing the number of required working places for a constant daily production is obvious.

"SUMMARYThe coarse-grained granitic pegmatities of the United States have long been a source of many important industrial minerals, because of this, they have been studied intensively by geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists. These studies have amassed a rather astounding array of published and unpublished information.Correlation of geological studies between individual pegmatites, as well as between major districts, has brought forth some semblance of order to the knowledge of the structure and Mineralogical composition of those highly complex and irregular deposits, making it possible to classify certain prgmatitites and pegmatitec zones into several groups of associated minerals; based upon the presence or absence of the minor minerals of beryllium and lithium. This classification or grouping of minerals, with the methods that have been developed for recovering certain of these minerals, makes possible a systematic approach to the winning of many of the industrially important minerals from pegmatite rock by a single integrated process.As the coarse-grained granitic pegmatites are composed primarily of,feldspar, quartz, and muscovite, the methods developed for separating and recovering them, as well as those methods developed for separating and recovering such minor minerals as spodumene and lepidolite, are important contributions to the over-all problem of pegmatite treatment. Some of these methods have been demonstrated in the laboratory only, whereas others have progressed beyond the laboratory stage arid are being employed in commercial operations.Recent laboratory investigations at Rapid City, employing both these early developments and the mineral groupings, have demonstrated that a single integrated process can recover muscovite, feldspar; and. quartz from the rejects of hand-sorting a typical muscovite-feldspar-quartz material. Employing a newly developed procedure for the flotation of beryl, the investigations have also demonstrated the possibility of recovering the beryl, in addition to muscovite, feldspar, and quartz, by an integrated process from a typical berylliferous pegmatitic material in which all of these minerals are present."

Mining-induced microseismicity data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in a hard-rock mine were analyzed for spatial and temporal patterns that might prove useful for prediction of rock bursts or assessment of rock mass damage changes. Pattern attributes described and illustrated in the previous report (part 1) were applied to the study of aftershock sequences associated with two different stopes. The aftershock sequences were spatially and temporally fractal, and the fractality was maintained for up to 16 h following a sequence progenitor. This suggests mechanical interdependency among the after-shocks. No statistical difference was found in the distributions of fractal dimensions when comparing two different stopes or when comparing aftershock sequences initiated by blasts or bumps. This suggests a lack of sensitivity to both stress perturbation mechanism and local damage states. However, differences between the two stopes were found in other sequence attributes that support inferred differences in the magnitude of stress concentrations and damage near each stope, and over time as a stope is developed.

"INTRODUCTION The surface areas of the finest fractions of a pulverized material are disproportionately larger than their weights. For instance, Pesrott and Kinney 3/ showed that, in a sample of minus 200-mesh coal, particles that are about 2 microns in diameter represent 15 percent of the entire surface area but only 1.5 percent of the total weight. Because the sur- face area is the dominating factor in the behavior of finely divided materials in many practical processes, the role of the finest particles is of great importance. The oxidation and combustion of pulverized coal, both in the dry form and in suspension in oils, and the hydrogenation to fluid hydrocarbons of mixtures of pulverized coal and heavy oil are reactions in which the surface area of the coal particles has considerable influence. This investigation of the size distribution of fine coal particles was conducted with the hope that such processes would thereby be better understood. The results should also be of value in the study of the crushing and fracture of coal."

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another increasingly common evaluation system for proposed projects is the environmental, social and health impact assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its generally more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluating potential impacts, such as on public health, and other features such as an ecosystem services approach to assessing biophysical and community impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. In this paper, EIA standards for the province of Alberta, Canada are discussed and compared to ESHIA. It concludes with several recommendations for consideration.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014. "The subject of this writing was first published in 1998 with the emphasis on the hardware cost comparison. Other costs, such as the required land area and spatial volume, were mentioned but not emphasized, as these were not deemed as important for new projects where the space was appropriated as required. During the last decade, these other costs have proven to be more than equal in importance. These costs are emphasized here through specific accounts of actual highangle conveyor installations that demonstrate the importance and the high-angle advantage An update on the progress in sandwich belt highangleconveyor technology is also provided.Origin and progress in sandwich belt conveyorsCover belts of the 1950s. Large volume, highangle conveying by “conveyors with cover belt, dates back to the early 1950s, when such systems were employed at the bucket wheel excavator boom conveyor in German lignite mines to increase the depth of cut without increasing the boom length. Various systems were developed, patented and built. These systems were not a lasting success for various reasons, which are noted by Rasper[1]. In his 1958 “Review of Cover Belt Systems,” Rasper summarizes the characteristics which are worth pursing and those that should be abandoned. The former are akin to good conveyor engineering. The sandwich belt conveyor model. The first sandwich belt conveyor model allowed calculation of the required hugging pressure to develop the bulk material’s internal friction and preclude material slideback. A modern, accurate version of the sandwich belt conveyor model is presented in Fig. 1. This model depicts accurately a derating of the material cross-section allowing an ample belt edge distance that can tolerate normal belt misalignment without material spillage. The calculations must thus recognize that only part of the hugging pressure is imparted onto the material with the remainder transferred belt edge to belt edge affecting a material seal. Mathematical development of the sandwich belt model is covered by Dos Santos and Frizzell in their 1983 article, “Evolution of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors.”"

However, the industrial sistem may be in for some of the many raw materials that drastic changes would increase the mineral self sufficiency of countries that are industrialized. In this way, the materials revolution would be a boom to Latin America, it would reduce some of the serious obstacles to the goals which all Americans seem to share.
