IT is a well-known fact that the results of different analysts, when operating on the same identical sample of steel or iron, are far from concordant, and it not infrequently happens that great annoyance and trouble in the commercial community are occasioned by these discrepancies. Attempts have been made at various times to investigate the causes of such differences and to obtain more reliable methods of analysis. The most important of these was made by the British Association in 1889: The following gentlemen, with Sir W. Roberts-Austen as Chairman, and Professor T. Turner as Secretary, were constituted as a committee to investigate the question, viz.: Sir F. A. Abel, Mr. Edward Riley, Mr. G. J. Snelus, Mr. John Spiller, Professor J. W. Langley, and Professor Tilden. Average .samples of steel were prepared in America under the superintendence of Professor J. W. Langley. The steels, in the form of turnings, were divided and distributed to sub-committees in Great Britain, America, France, Germany, and Sweden. We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2025 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), which will be held in Dallas, TX. This year’s conference will showcase the continued trend of strong industry interest, as there will be a record setting 115 papers being presented over the course of three days. The set of papers compiled in this book captures the latest and greatest information on a broad array of topics within our fascinating tunneling industry. We hope that the compilation of selected papers in this book will provide a comprehensive recap of the conference while also providing a source of future reference for contractors, engineers, and anyone in general who is a student of our beloved and unique industry. Since its inception in 1972, RETC has been the preeminent tunneling forum to promote ideas, tell stories, share lessons learned, and promote new technologies. RETC prides itself on its focus towards highlighting real-world experiences and practical ideas, with the intent to help the entire industry learn from one another and grow. The need for us all to stay sharp and remain on the cutting edge of technology has never been stronger – the technology and ideas that have been applied in aerospace are now attempting to mix with tunneling, and the advancement of AI continues to permeate all industries. However, no amount of technology or AI can fully replace the human element, and in our tunneling industry, the human element is key and is what sets us apart. In tunneling, every project is different, because the ground is always different. We can only take what the ground will give us, and we must rely on our past experiences to get through present day challenges. Most importantly, we must rely on each other. This is the heart of what RETC is all about. For those of you attending this conference, we encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible and engage with your colleagues to discuss during the breaks in between sessions. This sharing of ideas is what keeps us connected and helps to expand our industry. Please also try to engage with the scholarship students and the newcomers who will be in attendance, as it is the new ideas and fresh energy from the next generation that will continue to make our industry thrive into the future. The program chairs thank and greatly appreciate the efforts made by our session chairs, co-chairs, authors, the members of the RETC Executive Committee, and most importantly the SME staff towards making this RETC possible.

There is accepted evidence that multistage fracturing of horizontal wells in shale reservoirs results in significant production variation from perforation cluster to perforation cluster. In fact, only a fraction of the perforation clusters seem to contribute to production in many shale gas and shale oil plays. In many cases, the orientation of the lateral section of these wells is determined by lease boundaries rather than principal stress directions, and these often do not coincide. When horizontal wells are misaligned from the far-field principal stress directions, the fracture must reorient from the near-wellbore principal stress directions, which are aligned with the wellbore, to the far-field principal stress directions. The primary objective of this study is to learn how various completion designs influence the near-wellbore fracture geometry when such a misalignment exists. A secondary objective is to understand the influence of rock fabric features, such as mineralized natural fractures, on this reorientation process. To understand these effects, eight laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests were conducted using a true triaxial vessel with 914 mm × 762 mm × 762 mm samples of Niobrara shale. Several different completion designs were studied, including the use of fracture initiation slots with several different orientations and the use of perforations selectively located to encourage a smooth transition from the near- to far-wellbore region. The tests were carefully scaled as accurately as possible to provide insight into the field near-wellbore phenomena. Pressure and fluid flux at the wellbore, deformation of the block, acoustic velocity, and induced acoustic emissions were acquired during the tests. Additionally, sized particles were also injected to gauge the fracture width away from the wellbore. After the test, the blocks were dismantled, and the fracture geometry was mapped in 3D. These measurements allow one to clearly differentiate the fracture initiation and the breakdown—meaning the peak pressure—to be clearly differentiated; the fracture was already well developed when the maximum pressure was reached. The study reveals non-negligible tortuosity and aperture restriction in the near-wellbore region. In the field, this would translate to high treating pressures, uneven proppant distribution, and possibly near-wellbore screenouts. The test results show that, of the configurations tested, the best approach is to use deep slots that are aligned with the far-field principal stress directions. The oriented perforation design did not achieve the simple, smooth transition that was hoped for, and instead produced multiple competing near-wellbore fractures and considerable tortuosity. The study also demonstrated that the presence of planes of weakness, such as mineralized natural fractures, near the slot tip can result in poor near-wellbore fracture geometries, even for the best completion configuration. We conclude from these tests that the misalignment of the well with a principal stress direction creates near-wellbore complexity that, in turn, creates uncertainty in proppant distribution and, therefore, production; proppant might avoid up to a half of the created fracture. Regardless of the wellbore orientation, this uncertainty is further increased by the presence of mineralized features in the rock fabric that can strongly alter or stop the growth of the hydraulic fracture. Preventing those effects by changing the completion alone proves difficult, and new strategies are required to ensure a reliable stimulation of shales.

Hong Kong is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world. With constant population growth and limited opportunities for space, the development of a fast and effective underground public transportation network is essential. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation is currently undertaking several large underground expansions to its existing network. Much of the excavation will be carried out using the drill and blast excavation method.Drill and blast excavation is common in Hong Kong and with the continued development of underground infrastructure the use of the drill and blast excavation method will increase. Although an effective method of excavation, the blasting vibrations caused during construction can have an adverse impact on surrounding structures and impose disruption on the local community.In order to minimise the risks associated with blasting vibrations, and to demonstrate that the impact on local stakeholders will remain within acceptable limits, it is generally necessary for a contractor to submit a blasting assessment report for approval by government authorities before blasting may commence.Continued increases in population density will force more infrastructure to be constructed underground. Tunnels and caverns are increasingly excavated in closer proximity to critical sensitive receivers. This leads to greater potential impacts on the community, tightening constraints on contractors and a higher level of confidence required for approval authorities. Finding a balance between the needs of the community and rising construction costs becomes more challenging.This paper presents a case study on how the blasting assessment report process has been successfully implemented for a major MTR project situated in a densely developed area of Hong Kong. It describes several methods of assessing blasting vibration impacts, innovative uses of blasting for excavation and the mitigation measures employed to provide the best outcome for all project stakeholders.CITATION:Bedford, N and Muir, J W, 2014. Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

In the face of increasing energy costs, limited water resources, more stringent legislation, and lower feed grades, the mining industry is searching for more sustainable technologies and practices. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) is undertaking a research project, ‘improving the resource and eco-efficiency of mining operations’, to help the industry meet these challenges. The project is investigating alternatives in mining and processing that reduce energy and water consumption, minimise emissions and waste, and maximise the value recovered from the deposit. The targets are to reduce energy usage by more than 30 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 per cent compared to current practice.Key areas of interest were identified across mining and processing operations. These were grouped into the following interrelated work areas for investigation: high intensity selective blasting, in-pit crushing and conveying, preconcentration, energy efficient comminution circuits and technologies, coarse particle flotation, and water recovery optimisation. Investigations have included reviews of industrial data, modelling, simulation, and laboratory and pilot scale trials. In some areas industrial scale trials will commence shortly. This paper discusses the investigations and key findings from the project so far; highlighting the possibilities for reducing energy consumption, water usage and carbon emissions. A particular mining process may incorporate any combination of the alternatives identified and requires tailored solutions based on a detailed understanding of the ore deposit, the process and local conditions. The focus is on improving resource efficiency; creating more value with less impact and consequently a better economic return from the available resource. A series of tests were performed to determine the flammability limits of mixtures of oxygen, ammonia, steam and nitrogen, over a solution, in a sealed autoclave. The partial pressures of ammonia and oxygen in the vapour space were varied by adjusting the character of the solution and by adjusting the oxygen concentration in the oxidant gas respectively. The data shows that flammable conditions can be minimized by controlling the operating temperature, reducing the ammonia content in the solution, increasing the concentrations of Ni, Cu and Zn in solution and keeping the % oxygen in the gas phase less than 15.5. Observations were also made that suggest that the presence of an aerosol in the vapour space may hinder ignition.

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

THE Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, as a coal mining concern and as a steel industry, has much pumping to do, and the conditions are as varied as it is possible to make them. We are faced with handling large quantities of water at low heads, and small quantities of water at high heads. We have fresh water, we have salt water, and we have highly acidulous water (see Table II). Our pumping problems are concerned chiefly with mechanical reliability, continuous, reliable operation, first cost, and operating cost. The Corporation is actually expending more than 15 per cent of its power consumption at the mines in pumping water, and at the steel plant about 17 per cent; that is to say, 16 per cent of the Corporation's entire power consumption goes into pumping water ( see Table I). We are pumping out of the mines 2 ½ tons of water for every tan of coal that is produced. At the Steel Plant, we are pumping 188 tans of water for every ton of steel we produce. (See Tables III and IV). The mine is pumping at high heads, up to as high as 1,400 feet in one lift ; in the Steel Plant it is, fortunately, at lower heads, 250 feet or 110 lb. being the general maximum. It behooves us, therefore, to look into the question of efficiency. In whatever direction we can gain something, it will be worth while. The centrifugal pump is not an adaptable machine. That is, a pump designed for some particular location and purpose will not always work efficiently if installed in some other place and used for some other purpose. It must generally be designed for the particular job it has to do. Reciprocating pumps are not so sensitive. We have Cameron plunger pumps that can be set up almost anywhere in a mine and they will work, but for big jobs they are apt to be clumsy and the driving power becomes a factor- which is, in fact, the controlling factor in deciding the type of pump we use. One disadvantage of the a.c. induction motor, however, is that its speed cannot easily be controlled. At its rated speed and output, it is a highly efficient machine, but, with any change in these, its efficiency goes all to pieces.

Microalloyed steels are widely used in the oil and gas industry. They are a class of high strength, low carbon steels containing small additions of niobium (Nb), titanium (Ti), molybdenum (Mo) and/or vanadium (V). These steels have good strength, toughness and excellent weldability, which are attributed in part to the presence of nano-sized carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides. In the pursuit of developing higher strength microalloyed steels, it is of great interest to quantify the size, distribution, volume fraction and chemical speciation of these precipitates. However, characterization techniques suitable for quantifying fine precipitates are limited. Possible characterization techniques include SEM, TEM and matrix dissolution. A comparison is presented of the various techniques.

THE object in prospecting is to find ore. With the exception of certain discoveries of more or less accidental nature, intelligent prospecting as conducted today is, whether consciously or not, based upon a process of elimination. In the following discuss on it is proposed to evaluate those factors that enter into the eliminating of certain tracts of ground and, conyersely, the concentrating of attention upon others. The danger of generalizations as to the barrenness of cer.ain areas, without having due regard for all such factors, is emphasized. The fact that our conception as to what areas or rock formations are to be regarded as favourable or unfavourable is, in some measure at least, changing with new discoveries under diverse and unexpected circumstances, adds more point to the discussion. The criticism might be raised that the subject is treated largely from the standpoint of geology, but that may be met by stating that it is, and must continue to remain, precisely from this standpoint that the prospecror directs his activities. Briefly, the geologist may render the greatest service to the prospector in the early steps of selecting (a) the general territory in which to prospect; (b) the area to be intensively prospected; and, finally, (c) those parts of the claim or claims to be prospected in detail. Although certain phases of the discussion will be, in some measure, of general application, we shall here concern ourselves essentially with prospecting in the pre-Cambrian shield. Furthermore, the subject is so large that it has been decided to limit it to a consideration of that portion of the pre-Cambrian rocks in which is situated the mining district of western Quebec, of which the writer can speak with more personal knowledge. This limitation need not, however, seriously detract from whatever merit the discussion may possess, since the deposits concerned cover a fairly wide range of metallic ores, including gold, copper with associated zinc, and, lastly, molybdenum.

In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.

The thermodynamic model for species distribution in aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) system was developed. The experimental thermodynamic data, considering a range of aluminium chloride species, such as AlCl4-, Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6 were used in developing the model. When the XAlCl3 was in the range of 0 to 0.50, only anion species Cl- and AlCl4- were existing in the solution. As the XAlCl3 value increased more than 0.50, the available anions were Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6. Specifically, the concentration of Al2Cl7- increased in the composition range from 0.50 to 0.67 XAlCl3, after which it decreased. This change in the concentration of Al2Cl7- was due to its reaction with excess AlCl3, leading to the formation of Al3Cl10-. The average cathode current density was determined by the electrochemical experiments varying XAlCl3 from 0.50 to 0.71 in the AlCl3:BMIC solutions. The average cathode current density increased as the XAlCl3 increased from 0.50 to 0.67. However, it decreased when the XAlCl3 > 0.67. This trend can be attributed to the electroactive species Al2Cl7-. The Al2Cl7- promotes the reduction rate at the cathode, resulting in an increase in the average cathode current density.

A group of mining men attending a recent workshop on "Analysis and Control in the Canadian Minerals Industry" issued, among others, the following statement: "Slurry flow measurement is considered to be one of the most inaccurate in the industry. A special program should be launched to encourage development." In response, this paper starts off the program with an investigation of the principles and the conventional practice of slurry flow measurement and identifies weaknesses which cause inaccuracies. Then it follows with descriptions of nonconventional systems in use at various locations and comments on their degree of success. The paper concludes that relatively simple methods, which it describes, can be applied to obtain an accurate slurry flow measurement.

A study of certain gas making and fuel problems peculiar to the gas industry of California has been made by the Bureau of Mines. The work was done at the request of, and in cooperation with The California Gas Research Council 2, for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the gas-making fuels available to California, and their applicability to the present and future needs of the gas industry in that State. The data obtained have been applied in outlining a construction program, and indicate the possibilities in efficiently utilizing fuels in making gas by other than the oil-gas process. This paper presents an outline of the study and a summary of the principal results obtained, with some of the more important conclusions and recommendations based on this data. Gas is produced in California by processes which are both unique and different from those common to other parts of the United States. The bulk of the manufactured gas is made in and distributed from two main districts which are centers of population - namely, the Los Angeles district and the San Francisco Bay district. The gas manufactured in the Bay district is, almost exclusively oil-gas, whereas that produced in the southern part of the State, where natural gas is available, is mostly mixed natural gas and reformed-gas, but oil-gas is the chief product when the supply of natural gas is inadequate. Practically all of the gas companies are equipped with oil-gas generating apparatus, and anticipate using it in the future. As the continued use of the oil-gas process to the exclusion of all other processes, depends upon a continued supply of oil at a low cost, and the prospect of obtaining such low-priced oil in the future is somewhat uncertain, the questions have arisen: What will the future gas-making process or processes be? When will it be necessary to make plans for the installation of different gas generating equipment, and what will that equipment comprise?

In this paper, the differential equations governing the mass transport and the electrochemical reaction in a cathode catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are solved based on the polynomial series expansion method. Explicit expressions for the polarization curve as well as for the distributions of oxygen, current density and overpotential are obtained when a quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomial is employed to approximate the oxygen concentration distribution. These kinds of explicit solutions are desirable for MEA design and diagnosis purposes. The comparison between the conventional numerical approach and the explicit solution approach proposed here shows that satisfactory accuracy can be reached by the first four terms of the polynomial series. The effect of the catalyst layer thickness on the accuracy of the obtained explicit polynomial solutions is also discussed.

Gem-quality red beryl in the Wah Wah Mountains of southwestern Utah formed as a post-magmatic mineral in a topaz rhyolite flow. Unlike topaz, this beryl occurs along fractures in devitrified rhyolite, rather than in lithophysal vugs. The flow occupies a graben and perhaps a significant paleo-drainage. Beryl occurs at medial depths within the eroded flow, about 170 m below overlying mafic lava flows. Both beryl-bearing fractures and the host rhyolite show an unusual amount of argillic alteration compared with other topaz rhyolite flows. Alteration may be related to the incursion of surface water along shrinkage fractures within the flow. Whole-rock concentrations of CaO within the host rhyolite are very low (<0.01 % to 0.18%) compared with other topaz rhyolites and Be concentrations (about 20 ppm) are about average. Low Ca activities prevented fluorite precipitation and allowed Be transport as fluoride complexes. Beryl probably grew at subsolidus temperatures (-300-650°C), but above the temperature of kaolin development (200-300°C) as fluoride-rich vapors, released by devitrification, encountered fractures and mixed with vapors derived from surface water flowing through the fractures. Beryllium fluoride complexes reacted with water vapor, silica minerals, alkali feldspar, water, and Fe-Mn oxides along fractures to produce red beryl. Continued reaction of the cooling flow with surface water at lower temperatures probably produced a boiling, more acidic fluid that produced the argillic alteration. Consequently, eruption of low-Ca topaz rhyolite followed by entrance of surface water into medial portions of a devitrifying and still hot lava flow appear to be critical factors that led to red beryl formation.
