The purpose of this paper is to encourage petrographers to prepare thin sections, as the demand for microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and metallurgical products is becoming more general in .the mining metallurgical-fields. This paper has been written with the knowledge that the successful thin-section methods and the several new techniques herein described will be helpful to all engaged in this field of work. Detailed instructions for making thin sections by methods developed at the Salt Lake-City laboratory of the Bureau of' Mines are given in this paper. Several new techniques are described for making thin sections of loose grains and fine sands and for making good thin sections of highly altered and friable rocks. The methods described insure superior bonding of the rock to the glass slide, thus virtually eliminating any failures due to parting of the section from the glass slide, and permit fast mounting, grinding, and finishing, thereby materially lessening the time required to prepare thin sections.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a procedure for extracting copper from low-grade discarded mill tailings. A solid extractant consisting of an organic solvent extraction reagent adsorbed on granular activated carbon was investigated and proved to be satisfactory for extracting copper directly from leach pulps. When this material was used in a cyclic leaching, stripping, and electrowinning pro-cess, 95 pct of the acid-soluble copper was recovered from oxidized mill tailings. The weathered tailings contained 0.24 pct Cu (total) and 0.20 pct acid-soluble Cu. The copper was recovered as cathodes containing, in parts per million, 1.6 Pb, 3.6 Fe, 0.5 Sb, 1.5 AI, 1.9 Mn, and <1 Mg.

The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. For correctness, which takes on a major importance when it comes to sampling devices, some new, important principles that have been put forth by recent research, are described in details.CITATION:François-Bongarçon, D, 2014. Basing on character of fine ores, and employing all the advantage of dissolved-air flotation, the study within the dissertation put forth the methods of superfine metal mineral flotation with dissolved-air flotation equipment, and constructed a full set of laboratory flotation system. Experiments both in water and in slurry were respectively carried out by means of this flotation equipment. Further study was also fulfilled on mechanism of air-dissolved released devices, and the key components of system including ejector, releaser and saturator were designed. Optimizing devices parameters were chosen by taking ideal performance of the devices into consideration, according to orthogonal experiments and tests on bubbles factors, those performance factors were called air release rate, air release efficiency. The results with some minerals are better than JJF flotation machine with 30 litres bulk. The Dissolved-air Flotation(DAF) machine shows great potentiality in treating super-fine metal mineral concentration. The research indicates the Dissolved-air Flotation(DAF) system has superiority over mechanical flotation machine in fine flotation. Air-dissolved released bubbles appear on the surface of hydrophobic minerals in priority, solving collision probability less in the tradition fine mineral separation, such that the metallurgy technology of fine metallic minerals are improved. The exploratory research is a foundation for industrial pilot, commercial test and equipment maturity in the future.

Under the present emergency every consumer should store as much coal as he can. Although there is no shortage of coal, there is likely to be a shortage of labor to mine excessive quantities in the fall, and railroads cannot be expected to deliver coal promptly on account of the need for transporting war materials. Some miners must join the armed forces, and those who are left may be unable to mine coal as rapidly as you will need it when winter comes. When the first cold days arrive, there may be a shortage of trucks to deliver coal. Deliveries may be planned in advance, and your turn might not come until it is too late.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. "Lead-Zinc sulfide ore containing carbon is one of typical refractory resource. Because organic carbon has natural floatability, it has a great negative influence on flotation of lead-zinc sulfide ores. It is difficult to obtain qualified lead concentrate by flotation using conventional reagent system. In order to reduce the influence of organic carbon on lead and zinc flotation, two alternatives, i.e., removal carbon by pre-flotation or adding carbon depressant in lead and zinc flotation, can be adopted. If the flowsheet of removal carbon by pre-flotation is adopted, the lead and zinc recovery which are lost in the carbon tailings is often higher. If conventional carbon depressants are used in lead and zinc flotation, it has a certain depression effect on lead minerals. In the paper, the ore grading 1.49% Pb, 5.73% Zn, and organic carbon 3.14% has been carried out by flotation tests. In the bulk flotation of carbon and lead minerals, Pb concentrate is only about grading 21.00% Pb. In the pre-flotation of organic carbon, it’s hard to remove most of carbon, and the loss of Pb and Zinc recovery is too much in carbon tailings. New carbon depressant BK547 and three conventional carbon depressants including sodium lignosulphonate, Fe-Cr-lignosulfonate, and dextrin, are used in comparative tests of Pb flotation, and results show that BK547 have a good depression on organic carbon, and have almost no effect on Pb flotation. Using BK547 as carbon depressant, cycle test in flowsheet of two-stage Pb and Zn selective flotation and coarse concentrate regrinding have been carried out, and results show that concentrates grading 62.51% Pb and 41.33% Zn are obtained at recoveries of 70.24% Zn and 83.58% Zn.INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc mineral resources are still the main source of lead and zinc metal. For lead-zinc sulphide ore, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate are obtained by flotation. Minerals separation by flotation is a complex process and is dependent, along with other factors, on the relative distribution of hydrophobic (e.g. collector, polysulfide, elemental sulfide) and hydrophilic (e.g. metal hydroxide) species between different particles of the same mineral phase and between mineral phases (Piantadosi & Smart, 2002; Boulton, Fornasiero & Ralston, 2003). Organic carbon has natural floatability and is often associated with lead-zinc sulphide ores. If the content of organic carbon in the ore is more, the flotation index will become worse. The main problem is that the concentrates has too low grade to be qualified grade products for sale. At the same time, the consumption of reagents is more than ordinary ores without organic carbon. In order to solve the influence of organic carbon on the flotation of lead and zinc and other sulphide ores, a lot of research works have been carried out."

"Near-net-shape casting is an important area of research in the iron and steel industry today. Among the near-net-shape casting processes, the single-belt caster seems to be the most promising, since it is the only one that can achieve levels of productivity similar to those obtained with conventional continuous casting machines. One of the most important aspects in the single-belt casting is the feeding system used to deliver liquid metal over the belt. This system determines the velocity distribution and the levels of turbulence of the liquid metal and affects the quality of the strips. In the present work, a metal delivery system having a simple geometry was proposed. Using the CFD code CFX 5.6, a mathematical model to simulate three-dimensional turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer in that system has been developed. This model was used to analyze different configurations of the metal delivery system and the free surface shape of the fluid was also determined. A physical model of the feeding system was built and used to validate the predictions of the mathematical model. The fluid flow calculations have been validated by dye injection experiments and laser doppler anemometry. Measurements of the free surface levels have also been performed. These experiments provided supporting evidence for the predictions of the mathematical model.IntroductionTo maintain its competitiveness in the present market, the metallurgical sector, particularly the steelmaking companies, are developing new techniques of production. Some of these new processes are focussed on the strip casting technologies. Among these technologies, the SingleBelt process is considered the most interesting option, reducing the number of rolling steps and, consequently, the final cost of the product, especially the part associated to the energy consumption (fuel and/or electric energy). This process can also reach levels of productivity that can not be matched by other strip casting methods(1). One of the most important aspects concerning these new processes is related to the liquid metal delivery system. This system can have a significant effect on the final quality of the strips, since it determines the velocity distribution and the levels of turbulence of the liquid metal."

"Since the inception of spherical agglomeration, few investigations to exploit commercially the technique in the metallurgical field have been conducted. Of these, none appear to have been carried sufficiently far to demonstrate commercial feasibility.This paper describes a continuous agglomeration-separation process that can rapidly handle large tonnages of ore material. A small pilot plant de-signed from information obtained with the semi-batch unit described herein is currently in operation.In the absence of a reagent recovery system or cheap reagents, the process is probably not economically attractive for many common ores. However, for iron ores, the fuel content of the agglomerates can be used in a subsequent step such as direct reduction."

COPING WITH COMPLEXITY In every industry, and mining is no exception, plant and processes increase in complexity over time and managers and operators need correspondingly more knowledge. The mine manager has to delegate details to operators, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, safety specialists, personnel officers and the rest. Is it reasonable then, to expect the Mines Inspector to be competent to judge the conduct of all these operations against the criterion of the regulations? Obviously not, but what are the alternatives? One is a superficial inspection where the inspector goes on a hazard hunt for broken steps and missing handrails. Another is one in which an army of specialist inspectors marches on a mine, sometimes outnumbering the staff. Each is competent to assess some part of the operation and if he or she can find an opposite number among the mine staff, they can discuss details. But what good does it achieve? The system acts to remedy present defects and to make recommendations which, if only they were followed, would prevent the same things happening again. Given that this process has been going on since the first Factory Act of about 1840, how is it that there are any more defects left to put right? The answer of course is that defects keep appearing, and new defects arise as fast as the old ones are found and corrected. Further progress can only be made by preventing defects at their source.

(communication to the Secretary) : I wish to thank Mr. Webster for the copious quotations he has made from my writings, as he has given nearly all the arguments I wish to advance. It is necessary to note, however, his statement that most of his experiments were made on universal-mill plates, and that these were not subject to my condemnation of irregularity. I think this is a mistake. It is well known that universal-mill plates are finished under very different conditions of temperature, with the express purpose of regulating the tensile strength. This is a perfectly legitimate practice; but it renders almost worthless any calculations on the relations of the chemical and physical equations when the influence of such finishing is omitted. Another important point Mr. Webster has not answered at all. I have shown by an excerpt from his own table that two entirely different formulæ may be constructed; and it is undeniable that one is as valid as the other, since Mr. Webster started with no premise at all save an assumption that the effect of carbon was constant. This was an assumption pure and simple, and hence has no special virtue. The whole result of Mr. Webster&apos;s investigation is not that the effect of carbon is a constant, and that those of phosphorus and manganese are variables. On the contrary, there are two answers, with nothing to show which is right. We learn that if carbon is a constant, then phosphorus and manganese are variables; but that if phosphorus and manganese are constants, then carbon is a variable. This is a distinct advance over complete ignorance, but it is not final and satisfactory from either a mathematical or metallurgical standpoint. Regarding my own formulæ, I would say that they are used regularly in the testing-laboratories of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The tensile strength of every heat is calculated

No complete work on explosives, their constitution and analysis, has hitherto been published. Several books that contain chapte.r;s on analysis do not cover the matter thoroughly. Methods tha;t, manu~ facturers, testing stations, and other . agencies have developed to meet their own requirements have not been made public. The Bureau of Mines has issued four publications 1 - cov:eri:ng special phases of the subject. This bulletin. is not inte.nded to replace those reports, but rather to cover present methods employed 'in the , industry and to include all classes of explosives and the materials used in their manufacture. No sharp distinctions can be drawn between classes of explosives. . Surplus military explosives, for example, may be used for blasting, just as blasting explosives, under some conditions, may be employed for military purposes. Moreover, one class gradually merges into another because of similarity in composition. Explosives are here grouped as dynamites, black powders, propellants, detonators, and primers. Some materials are used in practically all these groups ; others in only one. To discuss all the materials that have been or that may be used and the methods for their identification and quantitative determination is not feasible, but the methods described will probably suggest ways of examining new mixtures.

The basic principles of systems analysis are presented. A model has been designed to determine the location of the Main opening in the presence of three or more stock orebodies. The necessary condition is to find a location for the Collection point which is an essential element in opening up each orebody (stock). The model takes into account the total transportation costs from each orebody to the collection point. Three variants are considered provided that the orefield is divided into two levels at least: - a collection point is designed at every level; - a collection point is designed at the lowest level, i.e. where the so-called concentration level is formed; - the collection point is located at a point between the planes of the two levels; The effect of the depth of mining and mine output on determining the method of opening up the orefield has been analyzed by considering a vertical and/or an inclined shaft. A function has been constructed which allows for investigating in both a static and dynamic regime the capital costs for constructing the whole complex including the shaft. The character of the function does not allow finding the global limits. Therefore, it is of particular importance to specify the limiting conditions. In this case these are the flow capacity of development openings and the shaft. The basic groups of cost and natural indicators for assessing and selecting an optimal technological solution have been systematized. The combined analysis of the two approaches to finding the location of the Main opening and determining the mining method enables us to determine when an inclined shaft is best, and the depth at which opening by a vertical shaft has no alternative. Thus, a transition area is formed for which the selection of an optimal technological solution requires an analysis similar to that proposed in this paper. Conclusions are finally drawn which serve as a basis for determining the areas of application of each opening, including the use of a combined scheme of mine opening. The approach presented can be used in both investigating the possibilities for opening up new orefields and reconstructing existing ones in cases when the mining operations go deeper.

The possible value of the red hematite iron ore of the southern Appalachian States, if some practicable method of concentrating it could be devised, has long been recognized. The ore is very low grade, and although in enormous quantities, particularly in the States of Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, is only at a few points rich enough to work, and even the best of it ranks among the lowest grade iron ores being mined in the United States. A cheap method of beneficiating this ore would make enormous quantities available and vastly increase the iron-ore resources of the country. However, this low-grade ore in effect constitutes a potential iron reserve, and as long as ample quantities of ore can be obtained elsewhere the question of its utilization does not demand immediate notice. Where these ores are in part of workable grade, however, a problem of more immediate importance arises which, from considerations of economy and prevention of waste in their mining, ought to be solved or, at least, attacked as quickly as possible. Where these ores are being worked they are usually intimately associated with lower-grade material that in mining is left behind. The difficulty and expense of going into ground broken by old workings makes the recovery of this lower-grade ore practically impossible and it is lost forever. Success in concentrating the red ores, therefore, would save material that is now being irretrievably lost. The successful large-scale concentration of law-grade ore in the last few years on the Lake Superior iron ranges should encourage the attack of similar problems in the Birmingham district.

"The captive bubble and sessile drop contact angle techniques have been used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of petrographically identified coal macerals. The magnitude of the contact angle on vitrinite is shown to be a function of coal rank ( %C, %0 and % vitrinite reflectance), increasing with increasing rank to a maximum for low volatile bituminous rank coals then decreasing for anthracite. The least data scatter is found when vitrinite reflectance is used as a rank parameter. Contact angles measured or estimated for other discrete macerals, indicate a variation in hydrophobicity based on coal type. These data correlate well with known flotation results. Coal is a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated minerals that have undergone chemical and physical changes by biological and geological processes. These plant remains form coal macerals, discrete organic entities in the coal which have characteristic chemical and physical properties. As the differing chemical nature of each maceral will affect its behaviour in processes such as carbonization the separation of macerals during coal preparation may provide an important asset in coal utilization.Separation of some of the macerals based on specific gravity has been achieved in the laboratory, and by Sun and Cohen , in a study of two Pennsylvania bituminous coal preparation plants. It was indicated that the lighter exinites report almost exclusively to the clean coal while the denser inertinites are concentrated in the higher gravity fractions. The Longwy-Burstlein process6 took advantage of the difference in hardness or friability of the macerals by using impact breakage followed by screening to remove the more friable vitrain,clarain and fusain. The remaining durain, often high in spore content, was then recrushed. The re-mixed fractions produced the optimum size for obtaining the best coke strength for a particular coal.Separation or concentration of rnacerals by froth flotation largely depends on differences in the hydrophobicity of the macerals. Sun and Cohen 5 . indicated an order of decreasing floatability as exinite, vitrinite and inertinite, while a Russian study (as cited by Brown 7 ) showed that vitrains floated more readily than the duller types. More recently, Hirt and Aplan8 showed that 'pseudovitrinite' floats somewhat faster than does vitrinite while fusinite floats very slowly. Olson and A plan found that vitrinite floated easily while substantial quantities of the non-floated coal contained fusinitic material. Burdon noted that vitrinite is more floatable than semifusinite, and Sarker et a/. 11 have shown that vitrinite is selectively concentrated by froth flotation and oil agglomeration. Sun indicated that flotation, based on his calculated floatability index, should decrease in the order clarain, vitrain, fusain and durain; while Horsley and Smith 13 indicated the decrease to be: vitrain, clarain, durain and fusain. These differences can be attributed to the specific coals used in each study and to the individual macerals composing each coal type within a given coal."

In laboratory testing, the Bureau of Mines established criteria by which common resin-grouted roof bolting systems can be evaluated and compared. Ultimate strength and stiffness were determined for nonten-sioned full-column, point-anchor, tensioned full-column, and debondable resin-grouted bolts, and for variations on full-column boltsn Bolt per-formances were compared using the performance of the 3/4-in full-column resin-grouted bolt as the standard. New and innovative systems can also be qualitatively compared against this standard. Since the medium into which a resin-grouted bolt is installed is one of the most important parameters affecting bolt performance, various host mediums were used in the testing: sandstone, concrete, simulated coal, simulated shale, and plaster. Bolt performances expected in other mediums can be inferred from the response patterns obtained in these mediums. Results indicate several functional differences among bolt types. Where resistance to shear is important, point-anchor bolts may outperform nontensioned full-column bolts at a lower cost. In medium-to soft-strength rock, tensioned full-column bolts perform best. Also, varying the resin-steel ratio seems to have little effect on the properties of a full-column bolt, when proper resin mixing is ensured.

Since 1920, the Bureau of Mines and, other agencies have conducted numerous investigations of methods of communication for use in mines in times of disaster or emergency. The results of these investigations have been reported in various publications (3, 4; 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16). In November 1944, the Bureau of Mines resumed the study of emergency underground communications. Until March 1946, the program was directed toward reexamining methods of underground communication that indicated possibilities of success. Since April 1946, the principal interest of this investigation has been in methods of application of radio to communication in mines, low-frequency radio seeming to offer the most promise as a successful method of emergency mine communication. Results achieved in reexamining other methods and in the investigation or the application of low-frequency radio between November 1944 and September 1946 were reported previously in a publication entitled "Some Studies on Emergency Mine Communications".

This report presents the results of a study examining the relationship between supervisor characteristics and performance in underground coal mines, The specific objectives of the research include; document tasks performed by first-line supervisors during a normal shift; explain why supervisors carry out their duties as they do: identify salient characteristics of effective first-line supervisors; and formulate criteria for selecting and developing candidate supervisors. To accomplish the study objectives, on-site observation and data collection was carried out at 13 underground mines in Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. One hundred thirty-eight first-line supervisors were observed during a full work-shift and discussions with the supervisors and the mine superintendent were held during the course of the visit. The observational data from the study provide a detailed description of what supervisors to during their shift. The report begins with an introduction discussing the problem being studied and objectives of the research. The literature related to supervisor selection is then reviewed. The following section describes the research design including data collection procedures and statistical methodology used in the study. The next sections present the analysis of mine, section, crew, and supervisor characteristics. The report concludes with a discussion of the results of the study and recommendations concerning supervisor selection and development.

This report contains the results of several related research efforts, all of which were aimed at enhancement of mine power system safety and reliability. The largest single effort was on optimum spares and maintenance scheduling for various components of a mine power system. Two closely related tasks involved calculation of the minimum arcing faults that could occur on dc trailing cables and the use of trippable load break switches to clear ground faults. Both of these tasks are concerned with reliable fault clearing to prevent shock and fire hazards. Three other closely related tasks were concerned with aspects of mine power system design: (1) alternate network topologies, (2) optimum voltage selection for mine power systems, and (3) selection of system components. The other research task consisted of laboratory tests to ascertain the effects of repetitive, low-level transients on insulation systems.
