Surface drainage, particularly mine closure drainage, must be properly considered during all stages of mine planning because it presents constraints that are critical to economic mine operation, minimizing environmental impacts and ensuring compliance with government regulations. Deficient mine site drainage increases costs of operation, causes unnecessary environmental impacts and may result in regulatory violations. The scope of this paper includes stream diversions around mine areas, drainage systems within the mine disturbed footprint, and closure drainage works to control surface water, ground water, erosion, sedimentation, and seepage discharges following mine operations. Developing selfsustaining drainage facilities upon mine closure, requires a mine plan that develops appropriate topography and constructed drainage courses that replace the function of pre-disturbance drainage systems without aggravated erosion and deterioration. Drainage criteria, particularly closure drainage criteria, represent important constraints on mine planning and are best considered by integrating drainage features into the mine plan well in advance of mining activities. Integrated mine planning by a multi-disciplinary team is recommended to achieve closure objectives at minimum cost and maximum effectiveness The geomorphic approach to channel design is an effective means of providing a drainage system that has the appearance, function and longevity of natural systems. By incorporating this technique into closure drainage planning, mine operators can construct sustainable (walk-away) drainage systems that require little or no maintenance in the long-term. This paper presents a process by which drainage criteria and associated mine plan constraints can be integrated into the mine planning process. This paper outlines the process for detailed design of drainage facilities, particularly closure drainage systems that are designed by the geomorphic approach.

ALTHOUGH most accidents occur through the A carelessness or misfortune of the workmen; that is no reason why we should not take all physical precautions practicable. The best way to approach the problem of mine safety is to acquire a personal feeling of responsibility for the accident and then plan how it might have been prevented had we known that it was to occur. A statistical analysis of the physical conditions contributory to accidents will give an indication of some of the methods or mechanisms that should be revised or safeguarded. The handling of rock or ore is a common source of minor injuries. Freedom from accident when mucking largely depends on the skill and care of the workman; this also is true, to a certain degree, to loading cars from chutes, but much can be done in the layout of chutes and their equipment to provide equal safety with less skill. Permanent stagings, or rigid units that may be easily assembled, should be provided so that the men handling the chute boards or gates and barring the jammed chunks will have a convenient safe footing for their operations. A stance to the side of the chute mouth is to one in front, because a man will not be liable to be struck by flying lumps or his bar, should it he caught in the mass, yet in many mines the workmen face the chute when loading a car. Fig. 1 shows the operation of a plank chute having special latches which support the chute boards in such manner that they may be conveniently dropped into place to stop the flow of ore.

"This study presents the results of a set of sound level measurements carried out in three underground mines where auxiliary fans are used regularly. Sound levels as high as 100 dB(A) by the workings and 115 dB(A) by the fans were measured in these mines. These levels are quite high even for intermittent noise. Ventilation layouts and best practices used to overcome potential problems related to overexposure to fan noise in underground hard-rock mines are presented here. Factors such as fan type, rotational speed, and silencer-duct arrangements and their effects on noise attenuation are discussed. INTRODUCTION Auxiliary fans are used in hard-rock mines extensively. They are used to ventilate development headings, crusher rooms, conveyor transfer points, and underground shops. They are also used in developing long tunnels and ramps. Depending on the flow requirements and space restrictions, single or double stage axial fans with rigid or flexible ducts are used. Usually, they are high pressure (3.75 kPa) fans with flow rates ranging from 7.1 m3/s to 30 m3/s. The input power varies from 15 kW to 113 kW (Mutama, 2004; O’Connor, 2008). Typically, a 113 kW fan can produce sound levels as high a 113 dB(A) (Howes, 2005). Silencers are often omitted for cost reduction purposes or when used, they are not well maintained. Furthermore, silencers provide limited attenuation depending on their length and type. Typically, the sound attenuation ranges from 10 dB(A) for a 1 × D silencer to 14 dB(A) for a 2 × D silencer, where D is the fan diameter. In a mine, the silencer is subject to wear and tear, especially when the silencer is used in harsh environments. The interior lining can get clogged and the acoustic fill can get covered by dust and diesel soot, thus reducing the silencer performance. Periodic cleaning of the interior casing can increase the attenuation capacity of a silencer by 6 to 9 dB(A) (Dabson & Acuña, 2017). However, this requires a special silencer design in which the inner cartridge can be removed, the sound absorbing material replaced, the inner casing cleaned and the whole set retrofitted. A number of techniques can be used to reduce auxiliary fan noise in underground mines. These range from selecting the right fan for the job to installing adequate silencers. The choice depends on the air quantity requirement at the working place, cross-sectional area of the opening, duct diameter, fan type (axial or centrifugal) and local restrictions. Auxiliary ventilation layouts and best practices used to overcome potential problems related to overexposure to fan noise in underground hard rock mines are presented here. Instrumental analysis is an indispensable tool to many phases of research on rare-earth metals and their compounds; therefore, the development of new and improved instrumental techniques is essential. This report describes an emission spectrometric analytical method using direct-current carbon-arc excitation of various rare-earth-oxide mixtures. Lanthanum oxide serves the dual purpose of an internal standard and a constant major constituent. The versatility of the method was demonstrated by three different applications: (a) Analysis of complex rare-earth concentrates; (b) determination of impurities in high-purity rare-earth oxides; and (c) detection of rare-earth elements in other types of matrices, such as those resulting from beneficiation of rare-earth ores. The average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10.0 percent was 14.6 percent for a group of complex synthetic mixtures of rare-earth oxides. An average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.05 to 0.50 percent was 21 percent for a group of high-purity rare-earth oxides.

In this paper, the logic and the capabilities of a long term production planning method for open pit mining are presented. The method is the first attempt in obtaining simultaneous solutions to the four interrelated parameters of open pit mining; 1) the mine life, 2) the specific blocks to be mined each year, 3) the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, and 4) the ultimate pit limits. An efficient cutoff grade can also be obtained through a sensitivity analysis. None of the existing methods can bring such a comprehensive solution to the problem. A production plan for a real life gold deposit is given to illustrate the logic and the capabilities of the method.

In the mining industry, as in other business, one of the more satisfactory results of sincere but cheerful effort lies in the proper completion of undertakings and problems, which, to be successful, must continually hold the interest of all concerned in the work. In most undertakings, genuine interest and satisfaction is largely dependent on the proper appraisal of opportunities presented, and the opportunity to associate ourselves with sinking operations at McIntyre central shaft, from the surface to a depth of 4,133 feet, was genuinely appreciated. This opportunity was made possible by the previous persistent and successful leadership of Mr. J. P. Bickell, President, with the assistance of his associates, and of the general manager, Mr. R.J. Ennis, in the development of the McIntyre Porcupine mine, and I beg to state that any success in this sinking operation was very largely due to the congenial co-operation and splendid workmanship of Captain Martin C. Horne, his shift bosses, leaders, and all those who worked with us . Our slogan throughout was " Safety First for Pleasant and Efficient Workmanship," and this general policy made it possible to sink and timber 2.,123 feet during the first year without a serious accident.

One of the main functions of a process technology and engineering services provider is to select grinding equipment that will meet the client?s throughput rate target. Prudent risk mitigation strategies would suggest that throughput rate estimates be cross-checked using a variety of techniques. Whilst some comminution circuit designers have estimated specific energy requirements via the manipulation of the Bond specific power equation e.g. Barratt?s Grindpower and OMC?s FSAG approach, other designers have opined that the Bond Indices have no role to play in the calculation of SAG mill specific power. As a result, they have developed their own specific energy estimating methodologies, e.g. SMCC?s Drop Weight based power methodology, SPI, SAGDesign, etc. Each method has its supporters and its critics. The challenge facing the engineering provider is how to nominate an SAG mill based circuit throughput rate estimate when faced with significantly disparate specific energies calculated by the different methodologies. This challenge is exacerbated via the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing some of which incorporate HPGR technology as the second stage of pebble crushing. The methodology presented in this paper shows that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for SAG mills in SAB, SABC and SSS circuits. The method accommodates primary crushed feeds, partial and or fully secondary crushed SAG mill feeds, and emulates the impact of pebble crushing on SAG specific energy. As a result, the new Bond Index based method has provided an additional tool for increasing Fluor?s confidence when predicting SAG mill based circuit throughput rates. Based on this outcome, the author proposes that the decades old conundrum of using Bond Indices to calculate SAG specific energies for SAG mill based circuits has been solved.

Within stamp-charged coke making a large volume of coal is compacted to one single coal cake before entering the coke oven chamber. This is done by means of several falling stampers in a stamping machine having a mold nearly of the oven?s dimensions. Producing a high quality coke also from inferior coals requires a cake density of approximately 80% of the coal density. Besides that the industrial stamp-charging process demands a minimum mechanical strength of the coal cake to move it from the stamping mold into the oven chamber without failure. Densification and the build-up of cake strength were investigated earlier in stamping tests using a micro-stamping device. The quantities derived from these tests (as e.g. cake density or porosity) represent average values for the entire cake. Statements describing the local compaction state at different heights are difficult to achieve without destructing the cake. In order to gain better insight into the densification process and the inner structure of the coal cake a computational model based on the discrete element method (DEM) has been set up using 2 and also 3-dimensional simulation software. The stamper?s position and velocity as well as the force acting on the stamper were monitored and the model?s response was compared against measurement data from laboratory stamping tests. It was possible to reproduce the force and displacement pattern of the stamper in response to the viscoelastic properties of the cake using standard DEM bonding and contact models. Furthermore, the rearrangement of particles in response to the compaction by the stamper was tracked by calculating their displacement at the point the stamper hit the coal surface. The latter can also be used as indicators of particle deformation or breakage. By defining control points at different heights the particle displacement, stress and strain rates, porosity could be studied at different heights. The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.

"The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity. One of the most vigorous of the continuous improvement methodologies is Six Sigma. While usually associated with improving manufacturing and product quality, leading manufacturers are using it to improve their extended supply chain and logistics capabilities. At the same time they are improving reliability, some companies have cut hundreds of millions of dollars of fat out of their supply chain. Mine to Mill optimization is a transformation of culture from processing tons to processing a quality feed size distribution which reduces the overall operational costs and add the highest value to the mine. This is not a constant endeavor. As such, a dynamic performance monitoring and diagnosis is necessary. We will review a systemic way to performance improvements and avoiding metal losses from the blast to the metals. We show the requirements of using raw data to analysis the data to define operational maps which provide assistance to run the mine and mill. A case study is provided with the mine and mill data was integrated combining process control and quality information resulting in reduction of water and energy consumption while improving the overall value of the mine. The results of reengineering the current system with this SIX SIGMA Strategy had the following results: an increase of ore milling: 4.6% decrease of mil power: 3.9%, decrease of fresh water consumption: 6.8%, with a total of net profits: US$ 31.8 million, the PI System infrastructure contribution: US$ 7.95 million. These estimates were for the period 2009/04/04 to 2009/12/31.

Intensive resource extraction, in the form of multiple mining operations, presents significant assessment and management challenges for resource developers, governments, community and the environment. Cumulative impacts, ie the successive, incremental and combined impacts (both positive and negative) of an activity on society, the economy and the environment, can place significant pressure on social, economic and environmental capital and render conventional mine-by-mine approaches to management ineffective. Cumulative impacts can be what are most important to environments, communities and economies surrounded by multiple mining operations because cumulative impacts are what they experience. There is much to gain from increased consideration of cumulative impacts. Unmitigated impacts have the potential to delay or even prevent expansion of mining in existing and prospective areas. On the other hand proactive management of cumulative impacts can benefit regional environments and communities and contribute to the industryÆs social license to operate. Resources are often not the limiting factor to better cumulative impact management. More effective coordination of existing resources may go a long way toward mitigation and enhancement, and better planning and assessment may help avoid impacts and exploit opportunities for efficiency gains through reduced duplication. In this paper we draw from working examples to present five practical assessment and management strategies applicable to resource companies to enhance positive, and avoid and mitigate negative, cumulative impacts. The strategies are presented based on their capacity for achieving outcomes, ease of implementation and cost effectiveness and are drawn from a multi-year study on the assessment and management of cumulative impacts in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales and a follow-up study to improve cumulative impact assessment and management practice in the Australian coal mining industry, both reported elsewhere.

The objective of this chapter is to review and discuss interpolation techniques commonly in use in the mining Industry today, including simple examples. This chapter will not attempt to compare the relative accuracy of each technique as this subject has adequately been covered by several authors (Knudsen and Kim, 1967; David, 1974; and Barnes, 1979) When appropriate, methods will be compared relative to the results of simple examples and computational ease. The examples presented are based on metallic deposits. The techniques, however, are not restricted to metallic deposits and can generally be applied to nonmetallic ones. The purpose of interpolation, as applied to a mineralized deposit, 1s to extend the knowledge of the grade and geology of localized samples to an estimate of the grade and mineralogy of a larger block of ground or even an entire deposit. The word interpolation means to compute values between given values and is limited to that region between the known values. The distinction between interpolation and extrapolation is important and must be adhered to in the application of these techniques in general, the interpolation must be limited to the area enclosed by verified samples. The methods being discussed can be broadly broken into three categories. ( 1 ) geometrical methods, (2) distance weighting methods, and (3) geostatistical techniques.

The approach to Risk Management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate successful delivery of a project. The $NZ4.4B Auckland City Rail Link project is the largest and most complex transportation project yet undertaken in New Zealand. Risk management prior and during procurement was undertaken in accordance the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP) and through the use of an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline report. This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. This included the use of cloud-based delivery of geotechnical data and 3-D geological models, reducing tendering costs and allowing a focus on risk mitigation measures during the tender rather than data management.

Dispute Review/Resolution Boards (DRB’s) are a highly successful dispute avoidance and resolution tool. In a joint effort between the UCA of SME and the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation (DRBF), the authors embarked on an informal assessment of the state of the DRB practice in the tunnel industry from the point of view of the Contractor, Owner, DRB Practitioner, and Attorney. The results of this assessment were presented in a panel discussion at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) in June of 2021. This paper presents the results of that session with recommendations for further industry discussion and implementation

The increasing availability of tools on the web provides a great opportunity for the research community to boost investigation by accessing computational resources from all over the world. For example, data analytics libraries implemented in languages like Python can be accessed through many open and commercial platforms, therefore providing researchers with a common set of tools or shared datasets. Unfortunately, that is not the case with research in resource assessment and mine planning, where the most standardised tools are commercial applications designed to work on the desktop, but there are not many standard platforms for research. As a result, researchers from different groups often need to start from scratch in order to develop their work, and rarely share implementations details. Similarly, apart from a few publicly available examples, there is a lack of common datasets that are validated and can be used to compare results between different approaches. In this paper, we introduce a platform that provides tools for resource assessment and mine planning, which can be accessed remotely utilising Jupyter Notebooks. In its current version, the platform provides (i) definition and implementation of basic structures for managing samples and models (loading, saving, adding or removing columns, etc.), (ii) definition of experimental and modelled variograms for spatial continuity analysis, (iii) definition of standard interpolation methods in resource evaluation (inverse distance and kriging), (iv) definition of standard problems in mine planning (ultimate pit and precedence constrained production scheduling), (v) generation of 2D standard graphs like grade distribution, conditional means, tonnage-grade, and production plans (vi) a set of datasets, which can be used for case studies, and (vii) a set of notebooks with examples and documentation. In this paper, we introduce the platform and show some examples that illustrate some of the possibilities that it has for research and education in the area of resource assessment and mine planning.

The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. Owing to jogs in the formation, a much greater depth was found necessary than was at first anticipated, the foundation under the stack

"The maintenance of permissible equipment which is tested and inspected at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines is dependent to a surprisng degree upon the voltage at which the equipment is operated. The difficulty of maintaining 500-volt equipment is frequently brought to the bureau's attention, and it is quite possible that if the bureau had appreciated at the beginning the full hazard involved, it would never have undertaken the approval of equipment operating at voltages greater than 250 volts.In this connection, the following statement from State mine inspection departments and other sources are of interest as showing the general feeling in safety organizations with respect to voltages higher than 250. These statements, although obtained as a result of a questionnaire sent cut several years ago, still apply very well to present conditions.A. I have not had time to consider seriously the proposed change from every angle, but looking at it from a standpoint of hazard, feel that the danger would be greatly increased. I have always occupied the position that underground voltage on portable equipment should never exceed 250 volts.High voltage of course would mean smaller transmission lines, which would be more economical and no doubt would require in several instances smaller equipment; notwithstanding, if this statement is true, the writer is still favorable to low voltage on underground portable equipment.B. I believe 500 volts should be the limit on the best equipment ender the best conditions and that the U. S. Bureau of Mines should do all in its power to limit the voltage to 500 volts on permissible equipment, as any increase in voltage means increased hazard.C. I will refer you to a section of our mining law, entitled ""An Act to Regulate the Tine of Electricity in the Mines of the State of ----"" which reads in part, as follows: Trolley wires, or other exposed electrical wires, shall not carry a voltage above 275 volts.You may readily see by this that we are not permitted to operate mining machines under ground in -----, with more than 275 volts at the terminals, except that we are permitted to install transforming stations throughout the mines, after complying with certain regulations at the mine.However, as we have had to date, within the calendar year of 1925, six men electrocuted in the mines of the State, using a voltage of 275 volts, I am of the opinion that if this voltage was increased, the hazard would also be increased in proportion.D. High-voltage motors, and transformers, shall be installed in suitable chambers, built of fire-proof construction, and well ventilated, and shall not be placed on intake, or between intake and return air courses. All high-voltage lines lines and apparata must be clearly marked, to indicate their danger. Main and distribution switchboards for high voltage shall be made of insulating and incombustible material, such as marble or slate, and to be free of all metallic veins, or of material equivalent thereto. Same shall be installed in a dry place. All switches or other instruments used in connection with high voltage shall be installed on suitable switchboards, with at least a three-foot passageway in front and rear properly floored, and kept looked by a door at each end that can be opened from the inside without a key. With higher than medium voltage, there shall not be any live metal work on the front of switchboard, and the entry circuit must be protected by an oil breaker s"
