The necessity to evaluate undocumented foundation lengths is essential in assessing the useable life, need for scour protection, retrofitting, or full reuse of existing bridge foundations. For this purpose, Parallel Seismic Testing (PST) has the best accuracy and is applicable to the widest range of foundation configurations used in bridge construction of any test method. Although not limited to bridges, PST case studies are presented involving two bridges. To preface the case study discussions, an overview of the PST method is given along with its results and analysis thereof. In one of the cases, we were afforded the rare opportunity to see the existing piles being extracted long after the PST testing program was completed. The resulting Class A prediction reaffirms the accuracy of the method. Versatility of the PST method is also exemplified in the two cases presented, where unique situations from complex foundation systems were overcome by analysis to provide successful results.

Mathematical modelling of the precipitation process requires that the kinetics of crystal growth, nucleation and agglomeration be known: This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on these precipitation sub-processes (ie. growth, nucleation and agglomeration) and describes a number of experimental techniques for estimating their kinetics. The experimental methods used to generate the precipitation data and the data analysis techniques used to extract the kinetics information from the data are discussed separately. There is no universal "best" technique for determining the kinetics. However, studies on multi-crystal systems are more reliable for modelling purposes than are single crystal studies. The selection of a technique will depend on which sub-processes are present. A problem with all kinetics studies is that there is generally a large uncertainty in the estimated kinetic parameters. This stems from the scatter in the experimental data being further propagated by the mathematical techniques used to extract the kinetic parameters.

The Bureau of Mines studied continuous closed-circuit attrition grinding of a coarse commercial filler-grade kaolin to produce paper-coating-grade clay having a particle size analysis of at least 70 percent minus 2-micron equivalent spherical diameter (esd). The coarse clay, containing about 12 percent minus 2-micron-esd material, was ground in a Bureau-developed 10-inch-diameter attrition grinder in closed circuit with a 5-foot-diameter bowl classifier. In the best test, a finished product containing 82.7 percent minus 2-micron-esd material was obtained when grinding 20 pounds of raw clay per hour at percent solids with a 100-percent circulating load. Energy consumption was about 341 kilowatt-hours per ton of clay feed, or 487 kilowatt-hours per ton of minus 2-micron-esd material produced. Closed-circuit grinding gave some-what greater particle size reduction and lower energy consumption than either batch or continuous open-circuit grinding.

It is well-known that blasting has an economic effect on grade control activities. However, until recently, methods did not exist for measuring the grade control value change caused by the blast. Rules of thumb were the best method to minimize ore loss and dilution, as simulation has been traditionally constrained by time and computer power. Even with these rules followed, an extensive study performed on over 150 blasts showed that the value change caused by the blasts followed a normal distribution – some blasts created value, and some blasts destroyed value. The question naturally asked was “How can we ensure the blast designs are optimized to create value?” Recent advancements in computer power have enabled real-time blasting simulations that create post-blast grade control models before the blast is fired. Understanding what will happen before it happens allows blasters and grade control personnel to iterate designs, searching for the highest value achievable.

High productivity of the equipment employed is one of the key factors in reducing production cost in mining. One of the best ways to achieve it is an increase in availability. In order to identify the most adverse factors affecting it, reliability and maintainability analysis ought to be done. If its results are to be conclusive, a sufficient amount of credible and consistent data is indispensable. Following the experience from field studies done in underground mines, this paper discusses the current status of failure and maintenance reporting, as well as problems encountered. It exposes the importance of adequate data collection on failures and downtime as well as it reviews the benefits of analysis based on such material. The question of benchmarking with regards to mining equipment performance is also addressed. The paper concludes with some recommendations on data collection and processing, as well as stresses the need to standardize the most important reliability/ maintenance notions throughout the mining industry and to conceive appropriate performance measures.

"Water in mining is the commodity that has driven the mining industry for decades. Often used frivolously, modern economic and social pressures are forcing change to use less water and to improve the quality of water and effluents. Used in many processes, water is ultimately consumed in tailings disposal and technologies which can increase the recovery of water are constantly being developed. Filtration and thickening are often seen as competing technologies for water recovery however new cases are developing that show significant advantages can be achieved by combining the two technologies to develop the most effective solution. Supported by case studies this paper investigates the merits of each of the technologies and which strategies of combining the two produce the best outcomes.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing applications generally require water for the processing of ores, whether utilising physical or chemical methods. Water is first added in the milling stage and additional water added as required throughout the circuit. Water losses from the circuit are principally associated with the tailings stream. Optimised water recovery is necessary both because it is a scarce commodity and to minimise the environmental impact.Water recovery is usually accomplished through a sedimentation or filtration processes. Water can be removed from the tailings impoundment by evaporation but this does not improve the mine’s water consumption. The water recovery methodology also determines the water quality; increasing water recovery concentrates solutes in the process water and may create recirculating loads of fine solids."

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. A small quarry blast was conducted with a maximum of 90 pounds per delay and shortly afterwards, area residents sensed ground motion and building shaking indicative of an earthquake. In addition, seismometers up to 500 miles (800 km) away recorded a magnitude 2.8 earthquake located in the area. Positioned in a seismically inactive area, southern Minnesota is not known for earthquakes. The earthquake was originally described by the USGS to be a surface blast at the quarry. Analysis showed that the earthquake occurred shortly (approximately seven seconds) after the quarry blast some distance away and well below the surface. This paper describes the evaluation of the “seismic events” including the blast, the following earthquake, initial governmental response, and provides the framework for assessing the relationship between the blast and the earthquake. The paper also discusses management of large volume claims from a complex event and presents a claims management strategy with best practices.

Constant-volume charges of precipitated PETN (pentaeythrite tetranitrate) at three specific gravities (0.50, 1.00, and 1.50) were used in laboratory tests to examine the effects of changes in explosive properties on free-surface displacement pulses and on crater dimensions. The tests were performed in large blocks of cement-mortar. The values for the detonation velocity, detonation pressure, specific energy, energy density, and energy release rate were calculated from the explosive loading density. Calculated explosive properties were correlated with free-surface displacement pulse measurements, strain energy, and measured crater dimensions. Increases in explosive properties resulted in increased free-surface displacement pulse parameters and crater dimensions. The loading density, detonation velocity, energy density, detonation pressure, and energy release rate were found to be best indicators of explosive performance. Simple acoustic relationships involving impedance ratios were examined and could not be used to predict peak displacement amplitude or strain energy. Data are presented in the customary English units as well as the International System of Units (SI).

The paper looks at the basic theory of tri-bological wear and the role played by the lubricant and its additives. It presents the argument that the “real cost of lubrication” is not the purchase price of the oil or grease, but rather the costs associated with not using the correct lubricant. A number of examples are presented, covering oils, greases and additives, in which a detailed evaluation of the application has shown that when all of the benefits of using the best lubricant/additive are evaluated, the savings achievable greatly surpass the incremental cost of the superior lubricant. One of the emerging classifications of costs in industry today are those associated with environmental protection. Two of the examples used describe the replacement of more conventional lubricants with environmentally acceptable products, compounded to compete in all aspects of serviceability, but which have the added bonus of being not only biodegradable but also of being of low toxicity.

This bulletin is the fourth of a series a showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. The work of inspecting and analyzing coal delivered on Government contracts was transferred to the Bureau of Mines by an act of Congress effective July 1, 1910. It had been carried on for several years before that date by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. The purchase of coal on the dealer's statement as to quality or on the reputation of the mine or district producing the coal is gradually being discontinued. At present most coal-purchasing contracts make definite provision regarding the desired heating value of a coal and the composition as shown by analysis. The heating value is usually expressed in British thermal units" and the composition specified is that shown by proximate" analysis. The price to be paid for delivered coal is made to depend on whether the analyses and heating-value tests of samples representing the delivery show the quality to be above or below the quality set forth in the contract. Large coal consumers are beginning to appreciate more and more the importance of the cost of power as a factor in the cost of producing a finished article. The endeavor to increase the efficiency and the economical operation of a power plant calls for an intimate knowledge of the quality of the coal being used. The purchase of coal under specifications insures the purchaser getting what he pays for and the coal being of the quality guaranteed. In addition, the analyses and tests of the delivered coal furnish data whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the conditions of operation.

We all live in professional silos û comfort zones, where we talk to like-minded people with the same training, experience and view of the world. We note in passing the existence of other disciplines, but they are tolerated rather than embraced. To the geologist, the metallurgist is a mad scientist conjuring gold out of some foul solution about which the less said the better. To the metallurgist, the geologist is a bearded, self-appointed sage who guesses what is under our feet by sniffing the air, and drives a Land Rover badly. As to the view of mining engineers held by both geologists and metallurgists, this is best left to the imagination. And of course we are all confused by the term æmetallurgistÆ. I am called a metallurgist though my skills are in mineral processing not metal processing, but I canÆt be called a mineralogist because that definition is already taken. *Please note that this is available as an extended abstract only*

Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the single most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. Bureau research has shown that to control respirable dust you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice or tubing and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present, Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan-powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

A technique was developed for low pressure diamond synthesis using a specially prepared glassy carbon. The glassy carbon is produced in the form of solid plates by slow carbonization process of phenol formaldehyde resin interrupted at temperatures of 1273° K, 1073° K, and 923° K. The diamond synthesis is performed using cobalt plates as a catalyst-solvent. Synthesis was carried out at applied pressures of 6.0 and 3.8 GPa and a temperature of 1970° K and 2170° K. The products were analyzed by the x-ray powder dyffraction method and by microprobe to identify the diamond crystallites. The samples were taken from the place of contact between the glassy carbon and the cobalt catalyst. They were separated from the charge by a chemical method. Diamonds of the best form and the largest size were obtained at pressures that were much lower than those used in the traditional graphite method of diamond synthesis.

THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

Many inquiries are received by the United States Bureau of Mines for the names of elementary books on geology, mineralogy, methods of identifying minerals, prospecting, and similar subjects. In response to this demand the following brief bibliography has been prepared. As many of the inquiries are received from those who have limited technical knowledge of the subjects involved, the bibliography includes the simpler texts which present the subjects in nontechnical language. Other texts contain glossaries which define the technical terms used. A short note following the title indicates the character of each book, the number of pages, and the price. Thus, elementary mineralogists or geologists, prospectors, mineral collectors, nature students, or travellers may select the texts that best suit their requirements and their capabilities. To supply the needs of more advanced students, quite a number of the standard texts used in schools and colleges are included in a second group. A short list of books on economic geology and mineralogy has also been added.

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising?s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

WITHIN the past thirty years the United States has been involved in two tragic, vicious, and costly world wars. To make the world safe for democracy was the reason given for our participation, but the confusion and misunderstanding that prevails all over the world today suggests that war is not the proper approach to the attainment of that utopia. These conflicts were conceived and prosecuted by nations far advanced in civilization and culture. Their best manhood was sacrificed, a staggering tax burden was saddled on their peoples, huge financial losses were incurred, destruction of property was appalling, and cultural and peaceful scientific advancement received a setback that may require centuries to retrieve. Therefore, some basis is established for the conclusion that progress in the past fifty years has been most outstanding in the development of instruments used for death and destruction, and that progress in this direction between the two World Wars would indicate that the next war will go far toward total destruction of world civilization.
