WITH a brilliance undimmed by hard times, the annual dinner on Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, was a complete success. More than 600 members, friends and ladies gathered early and filled the anterooms of the grand ballroom of the Commodore Hotel, while the president's reception was in progress, and then at the sound of the gong and with the music of the orchestra, rising above the happy din of conversation thronged to their seats at the tables. Following the "potage Ambassadeur"-probably to eliminate a very real hazard-the usual toy balloons appeared and a gay and lively scene, punctuated by multitudinous explosions, ensued, as the hundreds, of variously colored spheres bounced yon and hither until their gaseous existence was ended on the glowing end of a cigar or cigarette. On the speakers' dais sat C. E. Beecher, Chairman Petroleum Division; J. Vipond Davies, representative of A. I. M. E. on the Alfred Noble Prize Committee; Corbin T. Canadian leadership in a global mining context will depend not only on entrepreneurship and best practice but also on technological innovation. This paper argues for more ambition and commitment to R&D for technological innovation in Canadian mining. It focuses on underground hardrock mining, where past R&D initiatives have simply not stood the test of time, and it is important to examine why. Concerns arise because industry’s commitment to R&D has not been sustained over time. Innovation through exploration, processing, and environmental technologies has been more significant. Meanwhile, R&D capacity and synergies in government institutions and universities have not been exploited. There is a need for more commitment, coordination, and collaboration by industry, governments, and universities. This paper examines some corporate models that have achieved sustainable innovation, along with some that have not. A strategy for innovation is discussed that relates to culture, commitment, coordination, and collaboration.

In today's highly competitive worldwide market, it is becoming extremely important for managers to make sure that all resources are used where needed the most. That way, all resources are generating added value, process control equipments are maintained in an optimal state for best performance, and final product is produced at least cost. Performance monitoring is the only way to ensure that everyone is working on top priorities toward the same goal. How can we add value to these warehouses of data? The data is there and the information is hidden; it is just waiting to be extracted. A process performance monitoring system is able to determine if a loop, a system, a unit, or a plant meets the expected performances. The system prioritizes the areas that need attention. It also provides historical reports of the plant status by areas, by loops, and by identified problems. This information is provided to different categories of users in an appropriate format for each one. The system also includes diagnostics and tools to detect and analyze problems.

As mine head grades decline and orebodies become more complex, traditional mineral processing techniques and flow sheets to achieve saleable concentrate become more difficult to design and construct. Mines with lower quality concentrates or concentrates with penalty elements are particularly under threat. The economics of such operations are far more susceptible to metal price fluctuations, concentrate treatment terms and the availability of other, cleaner concentrates. Additional value may be realised for these orebodies through improved recovery by producing a low grade middling concentrate for further processing, in conjunction with a saleable concentrate.The most economic effective way to reduce impurity levels is to do so as early as possible in the mining value chain. Technologies such as fine grinding and fine particle flotation are well established as effective methods for impurity rejection in mineral processing. What is often overlooked is how a hydrometallurgical process could also be integrated in the overall flow sheet to achieve higher overall recovery at the mill. In the base metals environment, this is probably because hydrometallurgical processes are associated with production of metal, or require the use of expensive and toxic precipitating agents once the minerals of interest are in solution. These processes can be very expensive, particularly with rising power costs and poor economies of scale in capital costs associated with low production rates from middling streams. Glencore Technology (GT) has recent experience in the treatment of middling and low grade concentrate streams and also tailings streams to complement a concentrator flow sheet in a refractory gold and base metals setting. The value proposition is the isolation of a low grade middling concentrate from the primary circuit or the tailings stream for upgrading to an intermediate product with an equal or higher grade than the primary concentrate to allow blending for sale. This allows the plant to operate on a more favourable part of the grade-recovery curve while avoiding the expense of metal production. For existing operations this is particularly attractive since it can be added to the flow sheet with no process interruptions. The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). On-belt analysers have been used since the early 1980s in the coal sector to measure ash content in real time for diverting material on conveyors to remove waste, bypass beneficiation and allow suitable material to proceed to the wash plant for processing. Since 2008, a GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser has been used on an overland conveyor in South Africa to divert direct-shipping quality iron ore to bypass a jig plant. This paper focusses on recent evaluation work to determine the suitability of an on-belt analyser to upgrade the processing plant feed in a copper-gold operation.Copper-gold ore samples from New Gold’s New Afton Mine near Kamloops, BC, Canada were tested to assess measurement accuracy over short time increments. A two-minute measurement increment has been used in the minerals sector as a compromise between good measurement accuracy and a useful tonnage (haul truck equivalent size or smaller). At New Afton, this increment represents approximately 35 t of material. Segregation decisions are currently made after visual and sometimes analytical determination, at increments of approximately 500 t to designate material as ore or waste at the drawbell in the cave.Results of test work including the composition range and expected accuracies by element are shown. The operation, which is not mine constrained, was evaluating the potential for ore upgrading through waste and low grade increment diversion to upgrade ore quality feeding the mill. Prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was considered as the company recognised that it would measure through the full conveyed cross section continuously and produce multi-elemental measurements unaffected by particle size, dust, moisture content, layering and segregation, mineralogy and belt speed.GEOSCAN analyses over various analysis periods will be collected to identify variability in the conveyed material quality and used to generate tonnage-grade curves so that an optimal diversion (bulk sorting) tonnage increment can be determined. "Refuge alternatives (RAs) are required in underground coal mines to support life post-disaster. RAs are mandated by MSHA to maintain an apparent temperature (AT) at or below 95°F (35°C) while providing a safe and livable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours. Because strata composition and mine temperatures will affect the final AT within an occupied RA, NIOSH researchers have collaborated with five underground coal mines across the US to characterize the effects of geographic location and seasonal temperature fluctuations on mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata temperatures. The data collected indicates that some mines will experience greater temperature fluctuations than others, based on geographic location. The mine which demonstrated the greatest temperature differential over the course of the year resulted in a mine air temperature that ranged from 53.4°F (11.9°C) to 84.2°F (29.0°C) and a rib surface temperature that ranged from 55.4°F (13.0°C) to 82.8°F (28.2°C). This data suggests that the location and seasonal peak temperature can significantly affect the mine strata temperature, which could lead to a fully occupied RA exceeding the 95°F (35°C) AT limit over the course of 96 hours. The data reported in this paper could be used to examine the heat buildup inside an RA for actual mine conditions. Thermal simulations could be implemented to evaluate maximum occupancy ratings based on actual mine temperatures and strata compositions. INTRODUCTION In the event of a mine disaster, miners’ primary focus is to escape. Should their attempt be futile, they can enter a refuge alternative (RA) to await rescue. In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated that underground coal mines implement RAs within 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of the working face and spaced within one-hour travel distances in outby areas where persons work such that persons in outby areas are never more than than a 30-minute travel distance from an RA or safe exit. These RAs are required to provide a safe and habitable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours and to prevent the apparent temperature (AT) from exceeding 95°F (35°C) [1]. There is concern throughout the industry that in some cases the internal ambient of occupied RAs may exceed the 95°F (35°C) AT limit due to the potentially hot mine atmosphere as well as the metabolic heat generated by RA occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) and its Experimental Mine (EM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. Further testing and analyses were completed to evaluate the mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation) by which heat is transferred from an RA to the mine surroundings. Additionally, the effects of varying mine strata compositions on the heat buildup inside an RA were studied [3]. The mine strata temperatures will increase due to heat transfer from within an RA. Depending on the mine strata composition, some mines may be more thermally conductive than others. For example, sandstone is much more conductive than shale or coal (i.e. it disippates heat at a quicker rate). All things being equal, the air temperature inside of an RA after 96 hours will be higher for a mine with strata that has low thermal conductivity compared to a mine with high thermal conductivity."

"In the changing global market scenario for raw materials for the steel industry, a number of novel iron- and steelmaking process technologies are being developed to provide the steel companies with economically-sustainable alternatives for iron- and steel-making. In addition, the steel industry is also focusing on reduction of energy consumption as well as green-house gas (GHG) emissions to address the crucial subject of climate change. In this context, it is important to assess these critical issues for the alternate iron- and steelmaking technologies that have been developed. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of energy-efficiency and GHG emissions for some selected iron- and steelmaking technologies that are being considered for implementation. In this work, Hatch’s G-CAP™ and En-MAP™ tools that were developed with the main objective of quantifying and qualifying the potential energy savings and CO2 abatement within the iron and steel industry, were employed in the evaluation conducted. INTRODUCTIONThe iron and steel industry continues to transform itself and evolve in the ever-changing global market place – the raw material scenario is constantly changing with respect to quality and quantity (availability), there is stiff competition in both global and local markets, and there is increasing pressure to address global climate change issues, especially since the steel industry is highly energy- and carbonintensive. There is growing importance of steel production in developing countries such as China and India – this means that the steel industry in these countries will play an important role in defining and shaping the future of the industry.Climate change is expected to present new risks to the steel industry with respect to ensuring a sustainable business. Legislators are proposing to limit GHG emission by placing an implicit price on CO2 emission - market-based “cap and trade”, carbon tax etc.. In this scenario, it is important for the steel companies to reduce exposure to climate-related risks and at the same time, find business opportunities within these risks. Thus, there is a need to strategically manage the climate change risks; the key steps to strategically manage climate change risks are presented in Table 1[1]."

Results of laboratory studies on the flotation of marmatite (zinc sulphide) with new reagents, which were developed to avoid the use of copper sulphate, are presented.Episulphides were chosen as the basis for the reagents because of their reported special chemical affinity for zinc and cadmium. Attempts were made to solubilize and introduce functional groups to episulphides with organic and inorganic acids, ammonia, phenol, aniline, diethylamine, and pyridine. As a class of reagents, the episulphide-amine combination was generally found effective in zinc sulphide flotation to a greater or lesser degree. Best results were obtained with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination. Although anilino-ethyl mercaptan is the reported reaction product of aniline and ethylene sulphide, it was concluded that the effective zinc sulphide flotation with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination is not entirely due to the formation of the mercaptan.The economics of the possible usage of ethylene sulphide-aniline reagent are discussed.

Test work is the foundation upon which the success of projects and subsequent operations is laid, reflected in Professor Arthur Taggart’s pithy observation: ‘Make your mistakes on the small scale and your profits on the larger scale’. Indeed, Professor AllanTrench has succinctly noted that ‘Get the metallurgical characteristics wrong and you don’t have a project’.With deposits becoming lower grade, more structurally and mineralogically complex, final products requiring lower levels of impurities and tailings management demanding more attention, test work now assumes even greater significance in the acceptance and successful execution of a project. This paper is the first in a series aiming to stimulate thought on the metallurgical test work process by getting back to the fundamental basics through exploring and providing some guidelines for the metallurgical testing world, noting preferred practices as well as precautions and mitigations. This covers the key characteristics of metallurgical test work programs, including what needs to be done, sample selection, quality control and associated drivers, and most importantly, selecting, assessing and managing test work facilities. ‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

IT would doubtless have been felt by many but a few years back that there was little left to be said on the subject of crucible tool-steel, and that something akin to finality had been arrived at in its manufacture and general treatment. Probably such feeling was justifiable when it is remembered that the making of steel in crucibles is by far the oldest method known, dating back from time immemorial, it being indeed impossible to accurately trace its origin and earliest development; but it seems certain that carbon-steel was made and used thousands of years ago for cutting-tools. Proof of this may be seen by the marvelous carvings and workings on the intensely hard stone-work of the ancients, for it would be difficult to conceive by what means, other than with steel tools, such work could have been executed; and it is wonderful to contemplate that steel cutting-tools should have been used so long ago, whilst the principle of manufacturing them-that is, by fusion of iron and charcoal in crucibles-was then in a measure on the sane lines as we work on at the present day. Archaeologists have discovered that the Chinese made steel in crucibles long before the Christian era. " Wootz " steel fabricated in India centuries ago was crucible steel, as was also the celebrated Damascus steel, produced at the forges of Toledo, and, curiously, this latter steel furnishes' yet another proof that "There is nothing new under the Sun," for it is recorded that Damascus steel contained certain percentages of tungsten, nickel, manganese, etc., some of the very elements, in fact, contained in the present modern high-speed steel, so that a latent high-speed steel may be said to have existed

Why should young persons at University or Technikon want to become members of our Institute? There are several reasons.

The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the 'unbundling of mineral assets', the rising foreign control of South Africa's mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with 'pockets of sampling excellence' in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with 'best sampling practice' than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

In November 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines sponsored a 2-day conference to stimulate thinking and discussion about changing materials technologies and implications for the Government's materials information programs. On the first day of the conference, speakers provided overviews of developments occurring in each of the major materials groups. Emerging technological developments, applications, economic and national defense significance, intermaterial competition, and potential market growth in advanced plastics, polymer composites, ceramics, metals, and electronic materials were described. In general, the speakers forecast advanced materials market growth rates in excess of overall gross national product (GNP) though high costs will tend to limit growth outside of aerospace, defense, electronics, medical equipment, and other typically high value-added businesses. On the second day, a wide range of speakers representing several facets of the materials community described how advances in materials technology are creating a need for new types of data, statistics, information, and analysis. Reflecting the speakers' broad range of organizational, professional, and personal perspectives, an array of information needs was identified. Most requirements, however, seemed to fall into one of five major categories: Federal materials research activities, material standards, market and economic information, health and safety, and public policy.

Study on Iron Ore Sintering with High Proportion of Specularite Concentrates Specularite iron ores have poor hydrophilicity and ballability as well as bad high-temperature reactivity, which restricts the large-scale application in the sinter and pellet production. In order to make the best use of the specularite concentrates, a novel process of Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP) is applied in this research. By the CAP, the percentage of specularite concentrates in the sinter mixture is increased to no less than 40 per cent as well as the coke breeze dosage is reduced by 0.3 per cent~0.6 per cent. Moreover, all the sintering indexes are obviously improved compared with the traditional sintering process. Researches on the metallurgical performances shows the finished composite agglomerates are high-quality burdens for blast furnaces. This investigation can provide an effective route to utilize the inferior specularite concentrates in the sintering.

This report is principally concerned with the engineering and economic feasibility of area surface coal mining systems other than draglines. This analysis evaluates shovel/ trucks, shovel/crusher/conveyors, and shovel/rail excavation and haulage systems for an assortment of geologic environments and production rates in the Powder River Basin (PRB) Shovel/trucks, front-end loaders/ trucks, and shovel/crusher/conveyors were studied in a multi-seam, dipping geologic area of the Four Corners Region. The Texas lignite engineering and economic research involved bucket-wheel excavators (BWE), BWE/backhoes, and scraper/backhoe combinations for overburden and coal excavation. The PRE truck/shovel study utilized the most recent computer simulation available in both the design and cost analyses. Detailed engineering analysis, followed by in-depth operating costs (operating and depreciation) result in a complete evaluation of each mining system. Cost comparisons of the different mining systems under similar geologic and production constraints are presented in the report to illustrate the estimated capital investment and production costs per ton of coal and bank cubic yard of overburden.

"The computer methods used by the French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique, which are applicable to any type of ore deposits, are:(i) Ore reserve estimation. The data are either the core analyses or gamma leggings. To determine the spatial distribution of the ore, three different methods of interpolation are used. Two of these are based on the least-squares theory and the third one is an application of the regionalized variable theory. The interpretations of the orebody by the geologists are introduced in the computer program as often as possible.(ii) Optimal open pit design. From the spatial distribution of ore, the three-dimensional outlines of the optimal pit are determined by a geometrical algorithm which allows different slopes varying with the azimuth.Finally, the optimization of annual successive plans arc discussed."

A rapid recovery/recycling process was introduced utilizing the surface-chemical properties of finely dispersed mercury and alumina (Al2O3) fibers in aqueous environment. The conventional method of amalgamation or .ball milling. involves the mixing of a substantial amount of mercury to collect free gold during the grinding stage. In effect, a portion of the mercury is transformed into minute droplets that readily float and disperse in the amalgamation effluent. The fine droplets of mercury in the dispersion readily attached onto the positively charged macroscopic alumina fibers (i.e. = pH 9.8) at conditions pH 3 to 10. When an effluent from settling procedure after an amalgamation-grinding stage is passed through a column-bed packed with alumina fibers, maximum collection of negatively charged finely dispersed mercury occurred at pH 3 to 6. The collection/attachment efficiency was 99.5%. The collected droplets of mercury, which are left in the column-bed of alumina fibers, were subsequently rinsed with alkaline solution at pH 10 to 11.5. At these conditions, both mercury and alumina fibers carry negative surface potentials and resulted in the partial detachment of mercury from the alumina fibers. The detachment efficiency was only 30-35%. The attachment/detachment mechanisms in this study were analyzed using the DLVO theory.
