A novel homogenous precipitation method, including microwave heating, solution conductivity controlling and freeze drying, was developed for the preparation of US nanoparticles. The effects of the precipitation conditions on the structure and morphology of CdS particles were discussed individually. It was found that under the experimental conditions the particle sizes were controllable in the range of 14nm to 100nm. Blend-type CdS was obtained from nitrate or sulphate solution and the more stable wurtzite-type US was obtained from chloride solution, which was ascribed to the coordination of C1 and Cd2+ altering the supersaturation of the solution as well as the different growth units and their connecting patterns, In the precipitation process the surface of US nanoparticles were surface modified with CH3CHSCOOH. The results demonstrate that the bifunctional thiols of thioglycolic acid modified the surface through Cd-S coordination bonding and the induced counter ion AOT-SO3 as the balance charge further increased the stability and dispersity of US nanoparticles. This surface-modified US nanoparticles had been used to prepare nonlinear optics and self-assemble catalysts.

Coastal acid sulfate soils (ASS) are wetland soils and unconsolidated sediments that contain iron sulfides which, when exposed to atmospheric oxygen in the presence of water, form sulfuric acid. ASS form in protected low energy environments such as barrier estuaries and coastal lakes and commonly occur in low lying coastal lands as Holocene marine muds and sands. When disturbed, the iron sulfides in these soils can oxidise and produce large volumes of sulfuric acid (essentially similar chemistry to acid rock drainage with mines) resulting in the subsequent release of toxic levels of iron, aluminium, manganese and possibly heavy metals. This results in detrimental effects on aquatic biota, plants, animals and steel/concrete structures and on human health in the surrounding environment. There are an estimated 2.3 million ha of ASS located along 6500 km of the Queensland coastline. In contrast to many mineral sulfides encountered in the mining industry, the pyrite crystals in ASS can be as small as 2 mm and commonly occur as framboids with extremely large surface area per unit mass, substantially increasing their reactivity if exposed to air (oxidation). Highly reactive iron monosulfides can also occur, particularly in drains and shallow lakes. Many coastal areas, where some 80 per cent of the population of Queensland reside, are coming under pressure for agricultural and urban development. Construction of canal estates, marinas, housing/industrial estates, roads, golf courses, aquaculture ponds, sand/gravel extraction and drainage for sugar cane can disturb ASS and release sulfuric acid, which may then drain into adjacent waterways with heavy rain. As development continues to encroach on coastal lowlands, the identification, quantification and management of ASS must be addressed as part of a commitment to the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). ASS can be successfully managed by adopting best practices and following guidelines, but government, community and industry must collaborate to raise awareness, avoid æhot spotsÆ and develop more cost-effective solutions. Scientists led the education and public awareness program showing infrastructure and environmental damages arising from ASS in Queensland. Using results from mapping and research, they convinced policy makers, industry and polititians to accept the need for legislation founded on good science. The resulting æState Planning Policy 2/02: Planning and Managing Development Involving Acid Sulfate SoilsÆ identifies the StateÆs interest in acid sulfate soils. The Queensland Government considers that development involving acid sulfate soils in low-lying coastal areas should be planned and managed to avoid potential adverse effects on the natural and built environment (including infrastructure) and human health. SPP 2/02 states where the policy applies and when a development application will trigger the policy. It can also be used to assist local governments in preparing their planning schemes under the æIntegrated Planning Act 1997Æ. The SPP 2/02 comes with a æState Planning Policy 2/02 GuidelineÆ to provide advice and technical information on interpreting and implementing the SPP 2/02. This guideline has legal status in assisting in the interpretation of SPP 2/02. Those seeking more detailed technical information can now also access the æSoil Management GuidelinesÆ and ASS æSampling GuidelineÆ, available from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website. These are some of a series of chapters being developed for the æQueensland Acid Sulfate Soil Technical ManualÆ.

Modern steelmaking is based on direct use of oxygen in high intensity batch reactors. A totally new approach is proposed in this paper, based on the view that pursuit of high intensity is unlikely to lead to successful coal-based continuous steelmaking. By substituting carbon dioxide and water vapor as the oxidants rather than using oxygen directly, the intensity is greatly reduced. Accordingly. subsurface formation of carbon monoxide bubbles can be avoided by careful manipulation of the three participating rate processes, gaseous diffusion, interfacial chemical kinetics and liquid phase mass transfer. Steelmaking can then be carried out without explosive ejection of molten droplets and the generation of micro-spray but rather in a controlled and fumeless fashion. The vital component is the introduction of generic melt circulation technology. Three melt circulation loops in series are envisaged. Starting with a composite feed of iron ore fines, pulverized coal and lime flux, a metallized solid raft floating on molten iron is propelled out of the ironmaking loop onto the first of two downstream steelmaking loops. In the first, a liquid slag is formed, primary decarburization is undertaken not with oxygen but rather with CO2 and H2O and the melt is desulfurized. The semi-product stream enters the third melt circulation loop, where open-channel decarburization is effected along with dephosphorization to yield a low carbon steel product. Alternatively, the melt leaves the last loop to irrigate a packed tower countercurrent to argon at around 100 mbar to continuously produce ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel.

This study examines the accuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines. The specific objective of this research was to find locations where an area sampler might work better than earlier studies have indicated. The results show that fixed-location area sampling cannot accurately predict the dust exposure of a machine operator, even when the best fixed location is sought, the fixed location is quite close to the operator and the bias due to the dust concentration gradient is corrected. Industrial hygienists have known for many years that area sampling is unsuitable for measuring air contaminant exposures in the workplace. Near contaminant sources, the dilution air and the contaminants are not evenly mixed. Therefore, when workers are near contaminant sources, exposure measurements must be taken from the worker's breathing zone to be accurate.

Aragonite was synthesized in addition of Mg2+ ion and SrCO3 seed by carbonation process, and the best condition and mechanism of the synthesis was studied by analysis of continuous pH change, ICP, XRD, and SEM. As MgCl2•6H2O addition increased, aragonite phase increased at condition of CO2 flow rate of 100 mL/min and stirring rate of 250 rpm. It was the dissolution of Mg(OH)2 that determined overall reaction time. As SrCO3 seed addition increased at 0.2 mole MgCl2•6H2O, the amount of aragonite increased and the aspect ratio was from 5 to 9. And it was thought that Mg2+ ion prohibited calcitetransformation of aragonite formed by SrCO3.

Net solar radiation is one of the key factors affecting evaporation from soil covers on waste rock dumps. While net solar radiation is normally taken as a uniform parameter over a site for modelling purposes, there can be significant variation in the radiation actually received on various portions of the dump. These variations are a function of the difference in the cover slope and direction of exposure. A predictive model has been developed to calculate the actual radiation received on the dump surfaces, based on the net radiation data measured at a weather station on a horizontal surface. The model has been designed for application at any mine site in the world, and can be used in conjunction with evaporative flux models to help estimate the effect of three-dimensional variations in the cover surface exposure. The waste rock dump at Equity Silver site (located in British Columbia, Canada) has a barrier-type soil cover system to limit oxygen entry and water infiltration. This cover has been monitored for the past nine years. The new net solar radiation model has been applied to this site and the predicted net radiation was compared to the values of actual net radiation measured on the site. The predicted variations in net radiation over the three-dimensional surface of the waste rock dump have been applied to calculate spatial variations in potential and actual evaporation (or evapotranspiration) from the site. Preliminary analyses indicate actual evaporation from a site at this latitude could vary by a factor of two for exposed versus shaded slopes. The implications of these variations for the site are considered.

The quenching performance of a liquid quenchant can be controlled by controlling the agitation in the quench tank. Without agitation, a vapor layer or bubbles form at the hot part surface and the natural convention of the quenchant limit the heat extraction rate at the quenched part surface. Resistance to the heat extraction rate can be reduced by breaking the vapor layer or by inducing a turbulent convection at the part surface through agitation (Le. forced circulation of the quenchant). To determine the effects of agitation on the quench performance of a mineral oil based quenchant, the CHTE quench probe system was used with AISI4140 steel probe tip. Quenching performance of the oil is evaluated by computing the effective heat transfer coefficients of the steel probe as a function of surface temperature using Lumped Parameter Analysis. In addition, computational fluid dynamics (CFO) simulation of the quench tank with an impeller type agitator has been done to understand and predict the fluid flow pattern in the tank. CFO simulation also provides insights for determination of optimal location of the impeller and the quench probe tip. "Various methods are used to identify the grain composition of fine-grained materials because so far the best notion of the grain size has not found and there is no single method to define grain size. In practice the most important are the following grain sizes: sieve diameter dt, effective diameter de, substitute diameter d2 and statistical diameter dst. The mentioned sizes are connected with the methods of analyses. Methods are correct but measure of different diameters of grain and their results are different.The most important methods of granulometric composition analyses are the following: the sieve analysis, the sedimentation method and the conductometric (Coulter-Counter) methods. In each of these methods various physical features connected with the grain size are measured.Sizes of grains defined by different formulas or measurement methods are associated mutually by dependencies, which are results of differences in their determination or calculation ways.In order to determine principles of results comparison the classification analysis results on linearly or non-linearly connected was made. Analyses which results demonstrate the same type of grain size distribution are treated as linearly connected. It is based on the general formulae which determines the probability density function of random variable which is the function of another random variable having the known density function.In order to show the difference in the grain composition of the same material qualified by different methods, three methods of investigations were distinguished. They are: the sieve analysis performed on precise sieves, the sedimentation analysis performed by means of a sedimentation balance “Sartorius” and the microscopic analysis performed after preparing a microscopic slide where the grain size was measured by the Martin’s method.The materials selected for the analysis were quartzite and glass, which are the material of high purity.The obtained results of mentioned above three types of analyses were approximated by distribution function of four distributions: Weibull, log-normal, cut Weibull and Gaudin-Schuhman."

"Pyrrhotite in nickel-copper sulphide ores is nickeliferrous and intimately associated with pentlandite. Due to its low nickel content, pyrrhotite rejection is an important step in processing of these ores. In our laboratory, various reagents were investigated for their effect on pyrrhotite depression. Among these, a combined use of triethylenetetramine and sodium metabisulphite was found highly promising.The work described in this paper has two parts. The firs part is a summary of results obtained on process samples from the pyrrhotite rejection circuit at Falconbridge’s Strathcona Mill. The second part involves simulation of the circuit performance based on the reagent conditions used in the experimental work and the concept of split factors.Two sets of reagent conditions were evaluated. The first one involved baseline conditions, simulating the current reagent performance. The second one simulated the impact these new reagents can have on the circuit performance.The simulation results obtained under baseline conditions indicated a good agreement with the current circuit performance. The simulation results suggest that at practically the same pentlandite recovery and tailing grades, the circuit concentrate nickel grade can be doubled through effective pyrrhotite rejection by these new reagents."

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. The occurrence of fluorine in the copper/gold concentrates produced by Ok Tedi Mining Limited has provided a series of challenges to metallurgists since 1988. Although fluorine is distributed throughout the gangue minerals contained within Ok Tedi ores, itsÆ presence in talc and phlogopite (naturally floating fluorosilicates) has proven to be the predominate sources of fluorine in the final concentrate. Initial treatment for the fluorosilicates consisted of the use of a carboxy-methyl cellulose depressant added to the flotation cleaners. This was superceded in 1998 with the installation of a fluorine reverse flotation process for the removal of naturally floating fluorosilicates from the final concentrate when the fluorine content of the final concentrate exceeds smelter-defined trigger points. The fluorine reverse process is similar to by-product molybdenite concentrate production in that sodium hydrosulfide is used to depress copper/gold flotation whilst allowing the fluorosilicates to float. The process was installed in two parallel modules (to match the existing grinding/flotation modules at Ok Tedi), each consisting of a closed rougher/cleaner circuit configuration. Both rougher and cleaner cells are Jameson Cells from MIM Process Technologies, with the selection based on both processing characteristics and available construction space. This paper discusses both the nature of fluorine in-, and its removal from-, Ok Tedi copper/gold concentrates.

Achieving continued economic growth with social equity within the natural limits of the Earth's 'eco-systems is the major issue facing the world today. The material and energy needs of the world cannot be met with the current ways of addressing this issue. The need for metals, an important class of materials, will continue into the future because their unique properties make substitution by other materials impossible in many applications and this need will continue to be met from primary metal production and recycling. However, the recycling rate will increase and the usage pattern of metals will change to reflect the environmental impact of their production and use. Pyrometallurgy has an important role in meeting the metal needs of the future since some metals can only be produced pyrometallurgically; the energy required to produce some metals pyrometallurgically is significantly less than by other methods; most metals are most efficiently recycled pyrometallurgically; and the release of harmful and toxic elements into the biosphere can sometimes best be controlled through pyrometallurgical processing. The development of strategies for pyrometallurgical processing for the future lies in the recognition that sustainable development calls for large step improvements in value delivered per unit of environmental impact over the entire supply chain. Pyrometallurgists can respond to this challenge by contributing to reducing the environmental impact of meeting metal needs using three broad strategies: "end-of-pipe" approaches to convert emissions into benign materials for storage or disposal; flowsheet redesign to limit or eliminate emission production; and improved recycling technologies. A number of examples are discussed to illustrate how the sustainability driver is already influencing the technological development of pyrometallurgical processes, and how these will develop further as the sustainability driver strengthens.

Measurement of the net percolation from the base of a cover system into the underlying waste material is a key component of a cover system monitoring program. The units of measure (ie a percentage of precipitation or rainfall) are simple to understand for all stakeholders, which increases the importance of obtaining representative net percolation values. In general, lysimeters are used to measure net percolation across the cover material-waste material interface; however, the design of lysimeters for cover system monitoring programs in the mining industry have typically not considered fundamental aspects of lysimeter design. Lysimeter design is typically thought of as being conceptually simple, when in reality the design, installation, and operation of lysimeters is often counter-intuitive, due to the complexities of flow through unsaturated soil systems. This paper puts forward a methodology for lysimeter design while also presenting the fundamental design variables that should be considered. Lysimeter design for differing climates, cover materials, and waste materials is discussed. Finally, the performance of lysimeter designs previously installed in the field at sites in Australia, Canada, and the United States are subjected to numerical modelling to determine whether net percolation is being measured properly.

By combining the iron reduction process with the usual rotary kiln process, the direct production of metallic zinc from EAF dust is proposed. After thermodynamic estimation and desk-top experiments it is confirmed that the process is hopeful under suitable conditions. In order to get some practical test data the enlargement of the process scale was planned and the bench scale tests were carried on successfully. In these experiments a zinc ingot of PW grade was produced from EAF dust.

"Hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is the most prevalent industrial disease. It is ranked on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) priority list for major work related injuries. Uncontrolled noise not only has a physical effect, but is also a psychological hazard affecting the performance and well being of man. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is irreversible, yet it is preventable. The first defence against noise (noise control engineering) is a high priority in the mining industry. Second defences should be a last resort when the engineering control of noise is inadequate. Hearing conservation programs and the use of conventional hearing protection devices seem to have failed in the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. If compensation payouts that quadrupled in the past ten years are used as a barometer for the success of existing hearing conservation programs, then new strategies and technologies need to be investigated. The best practice Hearing Protection Device (HPD) may be seen as the minimum standard for second defence noise control.Conventional hearing protection is widely applied, but also misused in the industry as well as in the mining sector. Empirical research results, ownership, general attitudes of workers as well as qualitative aspects will be explored. The paper provides reasons, evidence, case studies and strategies regarding the best practice hearing protection philosophy (the Noise Clipper Model) as implemented in the Implats Mining Group. Worldwide tendencies towards custom-made HPD’s, findings that indicate improvements in hearing conservation programs and finally the successful application of Custom-made Hearing Protection Devices, will be outlined."

This paper presents the main environmental assessment techniques and indicators that can be used a) for the establishment of a sustainable development framework and b) for the evaluation of the environmental performance within the mining sector. Reference is made to techniques as environmental risk and impact assessment, life cycle assessment, cost benefit analysis and best practical environmental option assessment that can be used as tools to assess environmental impacts of processes, activities and products in the mining sector. In addition, the issue of environmental indicators, covering operational, management and environmental areas, that provide valuable information regarding both the environmental performance of a mining company and its efforts to influence this performance towards sustainability is discussed.

The novel multi-component, multi-particle, multi-phase precipitation model developed recently is used to predict the precipitation kinetics in complex 9-12% Cr steels investigated within the European COST 522 project. These steels are used for tubes, pipes, casings and rotors in USC (ultra super critical) steam power plants for the 21st century. In the computer simulations, the evolution of the precipitate microstructure is monitored over the entire production heat treatment starting with the casting process, including austenizing, several annealing treatments and in-service conditions.
