Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

"Refractory materials are an integral part of aluminium production. One special feature of aluminium making is the prominent role of sodium in all parts of the production process. This presence of sodium inflicts stresses on the refractory materials through reactions and may cause severe damages to the refractory linings. The present paper address possible reactions between sodium and refractories in anode bake furnaces, electrolytic pots and casting furnaces. The discussions presented in the paper points to the importance of selecting materials with excellent alkali resistance in all parts of the aluminium making process, although alkali resistance is not the sole parameter to determine refractory life-time. ""Acid"", i.e. silica-rich alumino-silicate refractories are shown to be the best materials for aluminium electrolysis cell potlinings, whereas high- alumina refractories based on minerals like andalusite seems to be the preferred choice for anode bake furnaces as well as cast house furnaces."

Among different types of ground control problems associated with underground coal mining, those related to in situ stresses are the most common ones affecting the safety and economy of a mining operation. As a result, this has been the focus of many ground control research works done in the last three decades. This paper summarizes a recent work done on in situ stress related ground control issues of underground coal mine development workings. The approach used in this study was three¬-dimensional finite element modeling by an implicit code, ABAQUS/Standard. In the models, roof stability evaluations were made using Hoek-Brown rock mass failure criterion. Influence of the in situ maximum horizontal stress angle on the stability of both entry and intersection was examined to help determine the best development layout orientation. Also, the effect of in situ stress ratios on the stability of development openings was studied. To make the work more general, both 'low' and 'high' in situ stress fields were considered In general, the modeling results indicated that entries oriented in the direction of maximum horizontal stress were in the best condition while those oriented at 90° had the least stability. For intersections, the maximum and the minimum stability were seen at 0°/90° and 45°, respectively. However, under some combinations of input conditions, the best or the worst conditions were noticed at same other orientations as well. Based on these findings, layout design charts were prepared for both entries and intersections. It was also found that the change in ground conditions with change in layout orientation was more significant for 'low' in situ stress fields than for the higher ones. Change in the average safety factor with change in the ratio of in situ maximum horizontal to vertical stress resembled a lognormal distribution curve. However, the effect of the ratio of in situ maximum to minimum horizontal stress lacked such a clear trend for different input combinations considered.

In 1996, the Dominican Republic operation of Falconbridge (Falcondo) developed a 5-year Process Control Plan in conjunction with the corporate Process Control group located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This plan was further refined into an analysis of the areas of the highest potential economic return for the company with the reduction shaft furnace operation being the most promising. Historically, the reduction plant, which comprises 12 shaft furnaces, has been the bottleneck of ferronickel production. Since 1996 there has been a history of control development, and the current status is that all 12 furnaces are using advanced model-based multi- variable predictive control. The combination of advanced process control (APC), improved control system performance and improved process information management has resulted in an increased throughput of 6% per shaft furnace and a reduction in operating costs of 4.5 US cent/lb of Ni. "A campaign was undertaken during the greater part of 2001 at Noranda’s Brunswick Mine Concentrator to investigate the role of gas (air) superficial rate distribution (Jg profile) to the cells in the final Zn cleaning stage (bank of seven cells). Three profiles were tested: Balanced (each cell with same Jg), Increasing (from cell 1 to 7), and Decreasing, along with an “as found” profile in a parallel control bank. The experimental design allowed for two confounding factors, changes in ore type and circulating load. The Increasing profile consistently gave the best metallurgy (down-the-bank grade / recovery). The reason for improved performance was traced to the response of the first few cells. The Increasing profile gave the highest selectivity of sphalerite against non-sulphide gangue (NSG) in these cells with relatively even recovery per cell down the bank (10-15% based on feed to each cell). The other profiles gave lower selectivity and higher zinc recovery in the first cells (up to 25% in cell 1), which combined to reduce overall bank performance. The increased selectivity with the Increasing profile is attributed to the low gas rate in the first cells reducing water recovery and hence limiting entrainment of NSG gangue. The Increasing profile was subsequently configured for all four stages in the zinc cleaner circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe performance of a flotation circuit is largely the result of the operator’s response to visual clues. This includes manipulation of the gas (air) input and how it is distributed to cells in a bank. A lack of sensors prescribes this approach. Over the past ten years the Mineral Processing Group at McGill University have developed a set of gas dispersion sensors including one to measure gas superficial rate (or simply “gas rate”), i.e., volumetric gas rate per unit cell crosssectional area, Jg (Gomez and Finch, 2002). The device collects bubbles in a tube immersed in the pulp and infers Jg from the pressure-time curve generated after a valve is closed and air starts to accumulate. The usual units are cm/s. It is robust, reliable and suited for plant use.A version of the Jg sensor was tested extensively during 2000 at Noranda’s Brunswick Mine Concentrator (Dahlke et al., 2001). The results were sufficiently encouraging that a sensor was fabricated to suit local requirements (Insta-Jg). The sensor detected malfunctioning field instruments and flotation mechanisms, and demonstrated that gas distribution to cells in a bank “as found” had no particular pattern, or profile. Preliminary testing suggested that a balanced profile (i.e., all cells with the same gas rate) gave superior metallurgy (grade / recovery down the bank) than the “as found” profile. This observation prompted a focused campaign to explore the impact of the gas rate (Jg) profile, introducing the notion of “gas distribution management”."

"Mineralogical evaluation of ores containing platinum-group elements (PGE) is fraught with difficulties because of the low grades (often 1-3 g/t PGE), dispersal of PGE (usually as finegrained platinum-group minerals [PGM]), as well as occurring in solid solution in some base metal sulphides (BMS) such as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Mineral processors not only need to know how the PGE are distributed, that is, their mineralogical distribution, but the grain sizes of the PGM, and especially the associated minerals.After obtaining a representative ground sample, common approaches include studying a large number of polished or polished thin sections, concentration of the PGM and sulphides by different gravity methods (e.g., heavy liquids, elutriation, micro-panning) and study of the produced concentrates. Unfortunately, these methods often do not produce concentrations that are sufficiently representative of a particular ore. The newly developed patented technology of hydroseparation (Rudashevsky et al., 2002) is especially effective at making concentrations of PGM over a wide range of concentrations (down to <300 ppb Pt+Pd+Au) and size fractions, including <45µm (down to a few micrometres in size), a size range not possible by other techniques. This water-based environmentally friendly laboratory technique provides a large amount of data from samples, which can range from 5 to 1000g, giving confidence to extrapolation of results to bench-scale and larger test work, especially when combined with quantitative image analysis to determine modal percent of major minerals and mineral liberation data, needed to predict the minimum (K80) and optimum (K40) grinds. INTRODUCTIONThe invention of the electron microprobe in the early 1960’s and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometers (EDS) in the 1970’s presented mineralogists with powerful tools permitting them to obtain chemical and surface area data on minute amounts of minerals in situ, in a non-destructive manner. An area of process mineralogy that has very much benefited from this new technology was the characterization and understanding of PGM species, resulting in rapid growth of newly characterized species (Figure 1). Recognition of the first PGM may be ascribed to the Spanish explorer Ulloa in 1748, who described native platinum from South America. The second PGM (laurite, RuS2) was only recognised in 1866 by Wöhler in placer samples from Borneo (now Kalimantan) and the third (sperrylite, PtAs2) by Wells in 1889 from the Sudbury Ni-Cu sulphide deposits. The discovery of the important Pt-Pd deposits in the Bushveld Igneous Complex led to the characterization of the important Pt-Pd sulphides (cooperite, PtS2 in 1928 and braggite, (Pt,Pd)S2 in 1932). By the early 1960’s, only about 20 PGM were recognised, and many later proved to be poorly or incompletely characterized. Thus, the introduction of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) led to a 50% increase of known PGM, as shown in a 1972 review on PGM (Cabri, 1972). At the time of the next review in 1981 (Cabri, 1981) the number of known PGM had grown to 75 and as of 2002, it had increased to 109 (Cabri, 2002). However, it is the author’s experience that less than about 25 PGM may be considered to be “common”, i.e., found in many different deposit types, as shown in Table 1, but usually only some of these occur in any one particular deposit."

Minerals processing operations use a significant quantity of fossil carbon to provide energy and as reductant. Greenhouse gas emissions from the use of this fossil carbon contribute to the global increase in anthropogenic CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. In the spirit of fostering thinking about a step change in this situation, this paper explores opportunities for the use of sustainable carbon from biomass sources in a range of mineral processing operations. The exploration shows that many common processes are contenders for fossil carbon replacement and that feasible scientific research by minerals processing technologists would add to deeper understanding of the potential for a sustainable bio-carbon based industry. It is also shown that there are many dilemmas on the social, environmental and economic fronts to be solved before a biomass based industry could become a reality.

The need to better understand and develop strategies to improve instantaneous shovel productivity at the Cadia Hill Open Pit Mine (CHM) instigated the development of the æShot to ShovelÆ project. This project has involved the implementation of a drill and blast (D&B) information management system to capture current and future experience. Equally important has been the manual monitoring of shovel productivity and direct use and analysis of high precision GPS and productivity data logged by ModularÆs Dispatch System. The analysis of this type of data was facilitated with the application of GIS based software (ie MapInfo). This has shown to be a powerful medium to display, interpret and assess this type of spatial information on a blast-by-blast basis. Cadia HillÆs well-defined D&B processes supplemented with the application of the above systems are providing a unique capability to assess and better understand the impact of both muckpile conditions and operator proficiency on instantaneous loading productivity. This is facilitating the definition of appropriate optimisation strategies in both drilling and blasting and operator proficiency training. This paper gives a summary of the work conducted in the æShot to ShovelÆ project, describes the engineering tools being implemented and discusses preliminary findings and their practical implications.

Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, NV. The 17th Annual Mining Hall of Fame Induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Georgius Agricola, David William Brunton, Herbert E. Goodman, David Ray Mitchell and Robert Peele. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) wrote De ReMetallica, an original and valuable work that discussed everything known about mining during the first half of the 16th century. In De Re Metallica, Agricola reviewed practical means of finding ores, methods of surveying and mining, the assaying of ores, types and uses of mining machinery, smelting, mine administration and more. This paper examines the importance of examining the relationship between biology and geochemistry when designing a biopile to treat alkaline soils impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. At a site in Nevada a large, unlined pit was constructed in a loamy sand soil and filled at regular intervals with a mixture of jet fuel, lubricating oils and waste solvents which were set on fire by the local fire department for training purposes. During its period of operation numerous chemicals were also dumped into the pit for disposal purposes, including dichlorobenzene and various chloroethylenes. As a result of these activities a large groundwater contaminant plume was formed. As a part of the site remediation process a decision was made to perform a limited source removal and excavate the top three to four metres of contaminated soil from the burn pit and place it in an engineered biopile. The location of the training pit is in a heavily mineralised basin where the background sulphate level in groundwater exceeds 5000 ppm. Due to naturally occurring biodegradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons a large portion of the sulphate was converted to sulphide which deposited in the soils as marcasite in the anaerobic soils. The initial attempt at soil remediation was to use a forced air treatment scheme that had worked well in small scale laboratory testing. Unfortunately, when attempted in the field on a large scale, marcasite reacted with atmospheric oxygen resulting in internal biopile temperatures exceeding 90¦C resulting in the virtual sterilisation of the soils without remediation occurring. In order to solve this vexing problem Pintail Systems, Inc developed an anaerobic culture that allowed the pile to be operated under anaerobic conditions. Within three months the biopile successfully demonstrated on a large scale significant biodegradation of the refractory petroleum hydrocarbons.

In the bench blasting, the realisation of an economic, and safe blasting is only possible with a reliable blasting design on condition that considering all sequential activities such as drillingblasting, excavation-loading, haulage, crushing (especially primer crushing). Here what we mean with a good, and reliable design is that ensures an almost displaced, adequately swelled muckpile with desired fragmentation degree for the loaders effectivity, and succesive usage. Meanwhile it must also has no environmental problems such as ground vibration, air blast, and rock flyings, or at least these matters have to be minimised. Two main parameters which have generally being questioned to achieve a safe and economic design on any rock conditions, are specific charge, and burden. In the condition of determining these elements, the other blasting parameters could be calculated according to them, and the blasting design could be completed. Within the scope of this study, it was aimed to determine the optimal blasting conditions of gypsum which is major rock unit of overburden at Sivas Celestine open pit mine. First of all, the engineering (mass, and material) and digging difficulty classifications of gypsum were done according to the current classification systems by using the results of field and laboratory studies. Then the blasting system which was being used on all rock units, was considered, and the necessary data were obtained. After previewing the site properties, predesigns were done, and applied by adopting Langefors design model. The necessary adjustments were done before, during, and after the shots, and the applications were observed. In order to determine, and record the data from each shots properly, a practical form was developed, and all data were transfered to these forms which give information about the blasting results such as muckpile displacement, and height, average particle size, back break, and rock fly existence, number of boulders etc. The blasting parameters such as burden, hole diameter, hole inclination, the amount and position of primers, bench height, delay sequence, and blasting geometry were considered for the iteration of each shots. During the applications, ANFO, gelatine dynamite, and electric delay detonators were used as explosives.

"The three types of specifications which are used for micropile work are: • Performance Specifications: The contractor is permitted control over certain design and/or construction procedures but must demonstrate to the owner through testing and/or certification that the final product meets the specified performance criteria. This method allows and encourages the contractor to provide a competitive and/or innovative micropile design within the framework of the overall design requirements. The responsibilities for the work are shared between the owner and the contractor. • Open Specifications: These leave the scope and design of the installation up to the micropile contractor. This method is the most common for securing bids on temporary micropile work. The responsibility for design and performance is clearly placed on the contractor. Open specifications are not recommended for permanent applications. This method allows the contractor to select the most economical micropile system. • Prescriptive Specification: The Owner describes specific procedures that must be followed, but which may not necessarily describe the objective of the work. When prescriptive specifications are used, the owner is responsible for the proper performance of the system. The contractor is responsible for satisfying the details of the specifications.Performance specifications are the most common and best reflect the challenges and interests of micropile technology and applications.The owner, designer and contractor will together be responsible for the tasks associated with the design, installation, acceptance, and performance of the micropiles. The installation of micropiles requires specialized equipment, techniques, and appropriate workmanship. Not every detail of the work can be specified, and not every potential problem can be anticipated. Therefore, a contractor who has demonstrated experience in micropiles must be selected to execute the work required."

"A new office complex is being constructed within 25m of the Hudson River in New Jersey. The project, about 140m by 100m, will include 4 basements under the entire footprint. The perimeter was to be secured by a 0.8m thick diaphragm wall, laterally supported by high capacity tieback anchors to rock. Columns were to be supported on footings or piers to rock at a nominal bearing pressure of 3.8MPa at depths up to 17m. Although some variation in rock quality was observed in borings, a substantial vertical seam of weathered and/or decomposed rock, 1 to 2 meters wide by as much as 8 meters deep, was encountered during construction necessitating field redesign. In some locations, the seam dipped below rock that is more competent. Footings were redesigned for support on drilled caissons, or soft rock was excavated and replaced with concrete necessitating a reduction in bearing pressure of the footings by one half. The tower covering the south half of the site was topped out in 2002 and the garage levels in the north half of the site were completed in 2003.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONIn September 1999, a major investment company began the due diligence process to evaluate a property on the shore of the Hudson River in Jersey City, New Jersey for a new multi-use complex. The site offers a spectacular view of lower Manhattan directly across the river from the site of the former World Trade Center. The site, covering two city blocks, was previously occupied by manufacturing and office facilities of Colgate-Palmolive.The building footprint is approximately 140m by 100m, the southern half of which is occupied by a 260m tall office tower, shown in Fig. 1. As of this writing, design of the structure for the northern half of the site has not been finalized, but it is expected to comprise an 11-story office building. A glass-covered atrium will occupy the street that formerly separated the two blocks. As part of the due diligence process and preliminary design evaluation, alternatives were considered to accommodate various numbers of parking places, both above and below existing grade. A major consideration for below grade parking is the proximity of the Hudson River some 25m east of the east building line."

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. Upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwail miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Trapped highwall miners present a safety hazard to workers during their recovery. Best practices to avoid trapped highwall miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system, Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

The corrosion properties of the skin and the bulk of semi-solid processed and high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy were studied in 5% NaCI solution by (a) analysing the corrosion morphology, (b) measuring electrochemical polarization curves, (c) performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, and (d) immersion tests at constant pH-values. Using XRD, LM, SEM and EDX to evaluate the microstructure of skin and bulk specimens, the corrosion results were related to the microstructures of the particular alloys. However, microstructure and corrosion performance were found to be similar for both production processes, and only slight but distinct differences were found. Generally, the skin corrosion properties are inferior to those of the bulk, with the exception of the high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy, where the finer microstructure of the skin layer exhibits a better performance as showed by impedance studies and confirmed in long term immersion tests.

"There&apos;s no such thing as quality assurance; only quality control ... by inspection. "(1) A common misunderstanding in the procurement and construction of custom designed, fabricated pressure vessels and piping systems is that quality assurance can be achieved by simply referencing codes, standards, ISO 9002, QMS or other such programs in the contract documents. In the authors&apos; experience, nothing could be further from the truth, not detrimental to the performance of the equipment than the exclusion of inspection activities and reliance upon warranties and "fit-for-purpose" clauses. Likewise, the expectation that fabricators, suppliers, or third party inspectors can provide such assurances is also unrealistic where they have limited knowledge of the process, material selection criteria, or limited technical resources. The development and successful execution of a quality assurance program is a collaborative effort by engineers, designers, material suppliers, equipment fabricators, and field inspectors with the full understanding and support of the end user.This paper presents an outline of the quality control activities undertaken by the authors for several recently completed and on-going hydrometallurgical projects. The activities include: prequalification of fabricators and sub-vendors, shop audits, material validation testing, material source control and verification, positive material identification of weld metal overlay, specialised welding inspection, contamination control for titanium and titanium-clad fabrication, eddy current and mass spectrometer (helium) leak testing of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, hot cycle testing of titanium clad equipment, tolerance verification for refractory lined equipment, final inspection and cleaning.

The intent of this manual is to provide guidelines for inspectors of drilled shaft construction otherwise referred to as drilled piers, caissons or bored piles. It should also be helpful to train beginning geotechnical engineers with limited first hand experience or for geotechnical engineers who are training inspectors. It is expected that the general guidelines and procedures described here will be supplemented by local geotechnical engineers working in a particular region based on local practice and experience. Since drilled shaft construction procedures vary widely based on local geology and size of project, an all-inclusive manual is not considered practical. This manual focuses on traditional topside inspection for routine drilled shaft construction. Other inspection and evaluation methods that rely on electronic equipment are available, but these methods require extensive training and experience in the interpretation of results. These more sophisticated methods of drilled shaft inspection and evaluation are common in construction, but they are usually provided by specialty subconsultants. The subconsultant will typically submit a report for each shaft, which will be reviewed by the geotechnical engineer. Other manuals are available to describe the electronic methods of drilled shaft inspection.

Good Morning. Thank you for your kind welcome, Lyle and thank you for having me here today. I spoke at the fall meeting of the Utah state RMCMI in Price and it&apos;s nice to be invited back. I can see by the program that you have two great days of interesting and informative meetings, including the mine rescue team exhibition and the safety recognition award presentations. As you all know, I am here standing in for Dave Lauriski, who is in China with Secretary of Labor Chao. As you also know, Utah is near and dear to his heart - and so is the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. I want to assure you Dave would be here if it were at all possible. But it is my good fortune that I could come in his place. We have made great progress as an Agency thanks to the hard work and dedication of MSHA&apos;s employees. But we are always looking for new ways to solve problems and continue to send more miners home safe and healthy every day. And we have been working on some great ways to do that, including thinking strategically. During my presentation today I&apos;m going to talk about where the Agency is in terms of our transformation to the MSHA of the 21st century, a little bit about how we got to be where we are, and then describe our roadmap to the future state. And I&apos;m going to focus on the significance of our plan and the planning process to demonstrate the implication for the mining industry. Former President Dwight Eisenhower once said, "In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable." Now I do like Ike, but I would have to take exception to the first part of the sentence. I have found plans and the planning process to be indispensable - the plan to give me a roadmap to my goal, and the process to focus me on the steps I must take to get there. We all know that having a strategic plan makes the difference between success and failure. We&apos;ve seen it time and time again, in business, in our lives - and in government: Having a strategic plan is crucial to success. And the process of making the strategic plan is crucial to its success. Putting together a workable strategic plan - a good roadmap - that will successfully lead you to your goals requires a thorough, careful process that takes into account each factor that you may encounter along your way to success, as well as those with whom you will travel. In order to talk about our current plan I want to take you back to three years ago, when Dave Lauriski went to Washington to lead MSHA. He knew that change was in the air. Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

Regardless of the care exercised by a blaster, seismic and acoustic effects produced by blasting can be disruptive and alarming to many people. With the general trend toward larger blasts, increased population, and urban sprawl, as well as sensational accounts of explosives - related incidents by the news media, fear and concern often leave residents searching for damage to their property. As a result, many blasting companies today find themselves at the center of litigation at an accelerating rate. Obviously, the best strategy for handling vibration and airblast complaints is to operate in a manner that does not create grounds for them in the first place. During the bidding process, ask questions. See the actual site to perf o rm an “exposure analysis.” Collect as many facts as possible before blasting including geological issues, contractual obligations, zoning, historical use of site, disruption of daily life to local residents, demographics of the surrounding area, as well as any unfavorable public opinions or prejudices connected with local construction projects or mining operations. A consultation with local pre-blast firms may assist in tracking down previous problems in the area.
