"Spent lead battery recycling still shows few weak points in the achievement of a 100% recycling of different waste matters and by- products arising from the recycling process. Some of said problems are dealing with aqueous streams outgoing the recycling plant, and more particularly, a) the waste waters discarded from the breaking and separation unit, b) purification of the spent electrolyte drained from waste batteries and upgrade to a quality compatible with full re-use by the batteries’ manufacturers, c) purification of the mother liquors discarded in the sodium sulfate crystallization process so to produce a salt of commercial grade. All of the above listed problems have been satisfactorily overcome applying an electrochemical process that, through different process conditions and parameters, is able to remove the harmful impurities that hinder the successful commercialization of such by products, or, at least, that can avoid heavy and expensive treatment plant and operation.IntroductionAlmost 100% of commercial lead and lead alloys produced by secondary lead plants is recycled to the new lead accumulators manufacture. The other by-products and residues produced through the lead recycling process may be classified into two groups:a) matters reusable in the new accumulators production processb) matters produced as a result of various reagents and additives used in the recycling process, to be sold to different market sectorsQuality and saleability of by-products are significant points for the economics of the secondary lead plant operation, because, if said by-products are not saleable, they are just wastes, so offsetting potential revenues, and, at the same time, adding a heavy burden to operating cost, like disposal cost [1]. When looking at a typical, modern lead scrap batteries recovery cycle, it is quite evident that we are still rather far from dealing with a waste-less technology (fig.1).The group a) includes 3 by-products produced through the breaking process: among those matters the polypropylene only usually reaches a standard quality suitable for sale to lead manufacturing sector or to other sectors as well. The other two by-products, electrolyte and separators, do not still reach, through a viable and effective regeneration process, a quality standard sufficient for their re-use in the lead batteries sector ."

"ULCOS is a large European program launched by a consortium of 48 partners led by arcelor and a core group of steel producers, which was started in 2004 with the support of the European Commission (RFCS and 6FP programs) to search for breakthrough process routes that could, in the future, when fully developed, demonstrate the potential of large cuts in CO2 emissions for the production of steel from iron ore.The timescale for commercial implementation is the post-Kyoto period, i.e. 15 to 20 years from today.The present paper presents the progress made in the first 2 years of this 5 year program.Several concepts are being investigated in parallel: re-engineering of the blast furnace to incorporate CCS in the core of the process, smelting reduction with CCS capabilities, massive use of natural with more CO2-lean technologies than today, hydrogen steelmaking and electrolysis of iron ore. Biomass also offers very attractive perspectives, while raising major challenges.None of these new steelmaking routes are ""no regret"", which means that the European Steel Industry has already incorporated extensive energy saving steps in its present process technology and is working as close to thermodynamics limits as is cinematically and economically feasible, and that decreasing GHG emissions further means introducing breakthrough technologies that add significant costs to the operation of the Steel Mills.They will also require much research and development before they can be proven and implemented commercially.IntroductionThe ULCOS program (Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking) is a large research program of the European Steel Industry and its industrial and research partners launched in September 2004 to investigate steelmaking technologies that have the potential of reducing the CO2 emission of the Industry by a large amount, typically in the order of 50%. It is supported in the European Community by the 6th Framework and the RFCS programs through 3 complementary European projects [1,2].The present paper summarizes the work carried out in the phase 1 of ULCOS and in framing the program of phase 2."

Across much of New York City, the geology of glacially deposited soils follows a common sequence. Outwash sands generally overlie varved silts and clays, which lie above a basal till deposit underlain by the bedrock. Pile foundations at projects with such typical stratigraphy generally develop their axial capacities by extending below the fine-grained deposits into the till or the bedrock. Contrastingly, at a project site on the Brooklyn waterfront, high capacity piles were efficiently and economically installed by driving them into the relatively shallow glacial drift and till deposits which lay above thick fine-grained compressible glacial lake deposits. An unusual aspect about the foundation design at the Brooklyn project site is that, relatively short and high capacity piles were driven into the shallow glacial drift and till deposits, overlying the thick fine-grained glacial lake deposits. In order for this unusual foundation scheme to be feasible and economical, the piles needed to achieve their driving criteria in the upper strata. Consolidation settlements in the lower stiff and over-consolidated glacial lake deposits below the pile tips had to be relatively small. The paper discusses the unusual stratigraphy in this area of Brooklyn in greater detail with geologic profiles and engineering characteristics of the glacial strata. It also discusses the design aspects of the pile foundations, settlement estimates, a pile drive test program during design, results of the static load test program during construction, and production pile installation results.

In early 2007, it became apparent that with changing concentrate feeds, the magnesium (Mg) load projected for CEZinc starting in 2009 and beyond would quadruple and overwhelm the current Mg process bleed capacity. A project was started, following design for six sigma (DFSS) standards, to select both the optimal process and to evaluate its target capacity for the Mg bleed circuit. The economic and process risks of under or over-designing while Mg reduction efforts were underway at the mines also needed to be evaluated. This paper describes the project methodology, the impact on the plant, and some potential optimizations for CEZinc's basic zinc sulphate (BZS) Mg bleed process.

Problem: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's [NIOSH] National Occupational Research Agenda (DHHS Publication No. 96 115) reports that approximately 50% of miners will experience hearing loss by age 50, compared to only 9% of the general population. The present investigation examines three antecedents believed to be associated with miner's use of hearing protection. Method: A posttest delayed posttest control group field research design was employed to assess antecedents toward wearing hearing protection. Results: Following the initial posttest, miners' attitudes and subjective norms were antecedents to intentions to wear hearing protection devices. Also, intentions toward wearing hearing protection predicted hearing protection behaviors. Approximately six weeks later, miners' attitudes and perceived behavioral control were each significant predictors of intentions to wear hearing protection and again, intentions were positively associated with hearing protection behaviors. Impact on Industry: Our results indicate that appeals to normative influences may be the most effective antecedent to employ when persuading coal miners to wear hearing protection. However, messages designed to impact attitudes and perceived behavioral control were also effective.

In 2000, Xstrata Zinc (former Falconbridge Ltd.) Brunswick Smelter commissioned a modified lead blast furnace. Since then, efforts have been made to improve its operation in order to achieve optimal operation in terms of coke consumption, lead loss to slag, and improved environmental and hygiene conditions. This paper will review the important step changes in operational philosophy, undertaken since 2004, for the control of the blast rate, oxygen enrichment in blast, slag chemistry and charge level. Furthermore, a review of the improvements made in secondary materials consumed at the blast furnace will be made. This paper will also discuss the significant reduction of the frequency of accretion removal as a result of improved furnace operation.

Two years ago I was sitting in a big lecture theatre at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie at the annual New LeadersÆ Conference listening to a guy tell us all how much he loved his job, travelling the country ælegallyÆ blowing stuff up à and getting paid to do it. I would have paid to see and do the things he spoke of à now IÆm that guy. From finishing a mining engineering degree at the University of Ballarat, through the job hunt, to firing environmental blasts in Tassie and designing and implementing construction blasts in the middle of the Gold Coast. My name is Rohan Stevens and IÆm a blast-o-holic. While the æjob huntÆ we all embark on toward the end of our degrees is a stressful time, itÆs also very exciting in the current climate. There are a number of things I have learnt through both my hunt for the job that best suited me and working for the worldÆs largest explosives manufacturer. Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. The year 2007 marks ten years of operation of KIVCETTM flash smelting technology for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Since start-up in 1997, the furnace throughput has been increased to exceed its design rate and other metallurgical performance targets while continuing to meet its environmental objectives. This was achieved through resolution of key mechanical issues, improved understanding to stabilize the reaction shaft operation and control furnace accretions, significantly reduced boiler corrosion by molten chloride salts through the extensive application of weld overlay, a suite of projects to improve furnace integrity, and some debottlenecking of the surrounding unit operations in the lead smelter. The combination of increased feed rate and improved on-line time allowed the KIVCETTM furnace to set a new quarterly feed throughput record of 129,300 tonnes in the first quarter of 2008.

The Boleo Copper-Cobalt-Zinc-Manganese Project of Baja Mining Corp. is situated adjacent to Santa Rosalia on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico. The El Boleo ore is a mixed oxide-sulfide deposit with major values in copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese. The metallurgical process designed to treat the El Boleo orebody involves a sulfuric acid leach in seawater using oxidative and then reductive leaching to maximize metal extraction. The leach solution is separated from the barren solids via counter current washing through a series of high rate thickeners. Copper is recovered using conventional SX-EW processing as cathode. Zinc and cobalt are extracted from the copper SX raffinate after iron and aluminum precipitation. The CSIRO DSX solvent system (Versatic® 10 and LIX® 63 mixture) are used in this extraction. Manganese remains in the DSX raffinate and is recovered by soda ash addition as a high quality manganese carbonate precipitate. Zinc and cobalt are acid stripped from the loaded DSX solvent. Zinc is then re-extracted away from cobalt using Cyanex® 272 extractant and stripped into a highly concentrated strip liquor (+100 g/L Zn) and directed to either a spray dryer or a granulator for production of zinc sulfate monohydrate. The zinc solvent extraction raffinate, containing cobalt, advances to another SX circuit using Cyanex® 272, for the recovery of cobalt as cobalt cathode. In this paper, the detailed results from bench and integrated pilot plant testing for zinc recovery from the El Boleo ore will be described. The results of this testing are currently being used to engineer the commercial plant at El Boleo.

The Sago Mine Disaster, on January 2, 2006, placed renewed focus on several different aspects of safety in the underground coal mining industry. One area which received increased attention since Sago and other underground coal mining events is the concept of Safety Culture. This report describes the results of a pilot Safety Culture Assessment implemented at a small Appalachian underground coal mine, hereafter referred to as the Mine. The purposes of this pilot assessment were to (a) evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of a methodology for assessing safety culture that had previously been developed for use within other industries, (b) to initiate an investigation into the understanding and defining of the existing safety culture of the underground coal mining industry, and (c) provide meaningful and useful recommendations for the participating mine for their consideration in their ongoing quest to enhance their existing safety culture. This pilot assessment was conducted in July 2007. The report provides information regarding the presence or absence of safety culture characteristics within the Mine. Observations regarding the characteristics of the Mine?s safety culture that should be sustained are presented. Areas in need of attention and management focus to improve the Mine?s safety culture are presented as well as recommendations for moving forward. Safety culture characteristics that are important for the existence of a positive safety culture have been identified to include: - Safety is a clearly recognized value in the organization. - Accountability for safety in the organization is clear. - Safety is integrated into all activities in the organization. - A safety leadership process exists in the organization. - Safety culture is learning driven in the organization. - A process for establishing a strong and effective Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) is in place. Performance objectives are associated with each of the safety culture characteristics and particular behaviors and attitudes have been identified that can be measured to evaluate these objectives. Using a methodology originally developed with the support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an assessment of selected organizational behaviors and attitudes was conducted to evaluate the Mine in terms of these safety culture characteristics and their associated performance objectives. The methodology involves obtaining a variety of quantitative and qualitative information, using multiple data-gathering methods. The information collected is largely based upon the perceptions of the individuals in the organization. The evaluation is a ?point in time? snapshot of the Mine, but cultural beliefs and assumptions do not change quickly. The feasibility and usefulness of the methodology was successfully demonstrated during this pilot assessment. Evaluating surface and subsurface conditions for marine foundations (bridges, causeways, terminals, etc.) is often done with a limited amount of data. Subsurface information for these projects is primarily acquired using traditional methods, such as boreholes, test pits or divers, which tend to be expensive and limited in the area of coverage. A number of geophysical methods, including precision bathymetry, sidescan sonar, and seismic reflection or subbottom profiling are extremely cost-effective and obtain significantly more data than can be acquired using traditional intrusive methods. These geophysical methods provide detailed surface images and continuous profiles of the subsurface stratigraphy. This information can be invaluable for selecting the best location for geotechnical boreholes and to map potential geohazards such as submarine slides and filled or open scour holes. Offshore investigations conducted for a proposed highway bridge (Knik Arm Bridge, Cook Inlet, AK), the retrofit of two existing bridge (Antioch and Dumbarton Bridges, CA) and a proposed cruise ship terminal (Ketchikan, AK) used a combination of geophysical methods to map water depth, detect and map debris on the seabed, map the thickness of unconsolidated sediment, determine the depth to bedrock and identify potential geohazards such as scour holes. The results of the geophysical investigations will be used to select locations for obtaining geotechnical borings, to extrapolate geologic information between existing or proposed boreholes, evaluate the potential depth of scour and design a pile support pier. Geotechnical engineers, offshore contractors and bridge designers are realizing the importance of the early use of offshore geophysics for (i) site characterization, (ii) to reduce the uncertainty of geotechnical conditions thus avoiding designs that may be overly conservative and thus more expensive and (iii) to assist in selecting locations for geotechnical borings.

To be involved in the construction of a deep dredged caisson for a major bridge pier is one of the most rewarding and professionally challenging experiences one can have in the bridge construction business. That experience was doubled in the construction of the two deep dredged caissons for the Highway 82 Bridge over the Mississippi River near Greenville, Mississippi. The challenges and the construction risks associated with constructing these two dredged caisson pier foundations highlight the construction engineering innovation associated with major bridge pier construction. The 1,378-foot Main Span of the Highway 82 Bridge makes it the longest cable stayed bridge span over the inland rivers of the United States. The main piers for this bridge are supported on two dredged caissons measuring 80-feet by 122-feet in plan, founding 200-feet and 170-feet below the river surface. The challenges of constructing these caisson structures, sinking them through 70-feet of water to the river bottom and then excavating and further sinking them to the founding grade without exceeding the design tolerances, were enormous. The construction engineering opportunities for innovation included major breakwater structures to create a friendly environment in 11 fUsec currents, the first time use of Articulated Concrete Mattresses for river bottom scour control, unique air dome design to maximize the buoyancy of the caisson structure while floating, a caisson guide system to assure positive control and positioning of the caisson during the initial sinking phases. and a comprehensive sinking plan to assure maximum control and minimum risk. Many of the innovative solutions to the construction challenges on this bridge will be incorporated into future caisson construction projects on the lower Mississippi River.

Improvements in construction equipment and techniques in recent years have made possible the use of drilled shaft foundations in diameters and lengths not previously considered practical or feasible. Many highway bridge and other structures are now routinely founded on drilled shafts which -are 8 to 12 feet in diameter and extending over 200 feet in depth below grade. There are unique challenges associated with constructing such large and deep cast-In-place foundations and engineers should be aware of the special needs associated with site investigation, construction specifications, material requirements, and quality assurance. This paper outlines a number of special considerations for these foundations, along with strategies that may be employed to improve the reliability and quality of large drilled shaft foundations.

Hydraulic fills are widely used in the tabular, steeply dipping stopes of the South African gold and platinum mines as an integrated process within a daily cycle of drill and blast. There is therefore only a small time window in which to fill the geotextile bags used as primary fill containment, without the risk of loosing production. Consequently, mines tend to increase the flow rate to the stopes, although this compromises adequate drainage, consolidation and strength development during filling. Recent underground measurements inside the geotextile bag have revealed that at high rates of rise and at 25 degrees dip, the backfill can remobilise within a limited area inside the geotextile bag during filling. This sudden downward surge of backfill exerts, for only a few seconds, additional loading on the geotextile, its supporting mesh and the props. This unstable behaviour poses a serious threat as it can push props out of place, thereby damaging the geotextile bag and causing a mud slide in the stope. To reduce the risk of accidents, the phenomenon of sudden slumping was further investigated for various filling conditions in the laboratory. The results confirmed that the maximum pressures associated with the sudden slumping can be more than five times those experienced during steady-state consolidation. Based on this new insight, the current best practice for hydraulic backfilling was critically reviewed. A practical approach to implementing meaningful standards is presented to ensure safe operations in relation to the consistency of the backfill quality and the appropriate matching of geotextile characteristics with backfill properties.

Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.

The pre-fabricated outdoor rooms are often utilised near the mines and construction sites for office purposes. The paper has presented modelling and simulation results of the integration of commercially available glass coated photovoltaic (PV) energy technology and solar ventilation technology into a pre-fabricated outdoor room. The pre-fabricated outdoor room has been setup at Concordia University, Montréal for full scale testing of the glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation. The computer simulation model has been developed for PV modules installed on a double wall wooden frame in an outdoor room based on its preliminary field testing. The testing apparatus was a wooden frame assembly of double wall with solar air ventilation: two adjacent glass coated PV modules, air column and plywood board filled with polystyrene. The measurement data collected from various sensors were: solar intensity, ambient air temperature, room air temperature, electric power, surface temperatures of PV modules and plywood board, air velocities and air temperatures in the air column. The enhancement in the air velocity of the air column was achieved with an exhaust fan fixed in an outdoor room. The simulation model is used to perform the two dimensional energy analyses with applied one dimensional solution of steady state heat conduction equations. The simulation model is based on conjugate heat exchange paths with network boundary conditions of convection, radiation heat exchange and solar air ventilation heat transport. The model parameters are based on measured values of ambient air temperature, room air temperature, air velocity at outlet of air column in double wall, electric power and available solar intensity. The model has predicted fairly well energy performance of glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation installed on a wooden frame. The model is also useful for predicting heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) requirements for the pre-fabricated outdoor rooms.

After World War II Canada?s fledgling iron ore mining industry developed along the ill-defined Quebec / Labrador border near what became the town of Knob Lake and later renamed Schefferville. For about twenty-five years from 1954 to 1982 Schefferville was the epicenter of Canadian iron ore mining and the foundation of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. In about 1982 it all stopped, shut down, the miners moved away leaving behind a mining camp and a ghost town that have sat idle and almost deserted for the past twenty five years. The story looks set to change with new plans to re-establish the former mining operations in the historic mining camp. This paper outlines the proposal to reactivate the direct shipping iron ore operations in the Schefferville mining camp, and specifically the properties in Labrador owned or optioned by Labrador Iron Mines Limited (?LIM?), a wholly owned subsidiary of London Stock Exchange listed Anglesey Mining plc. The Schefferville mining camp is located about 1,000 km northeast of Montreal. There are no roads connecting the area to southern Labrador or to Quebec. Access to the area is by rail from Sept Iles to Schefferville, or by air from Montreal and Sept Iles.

Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

A critical safety component for all underground mining is intrinsic and standing support systems. Specifically, tabular hardrock mining exploits a wide variety of deposits that require various methodologies to safely mine the ore material. Several new support systems have been developed in recent years for hard rock applications which have been modified or applied in a variety of ground control applications. These include prestressing devices, improved cribs, and free standing supports. Various standing support and prop-type systems have been designed for hard rock applications with seismic loading conditions to accept prestressing. The prestressing, using water-filled cells, creates an active load upon installation and is considered essential to maintain support during and after the blasting of the mine faces. Heavy seismic activity is also present in these mines and the prestressing units can provide some energy absorption capability to help preserve the integrity of the support. This paper presents an overview of these innovations in support technology.
