Magnetic surveying and map production is well established in land based mineral exploration. Magnetic data are routinely used to map geology in covered terrains, to estimate the depth to basement in overburden covered areas, and to identify altered zones, mineralization, bedding attitudes, and fault networks both regionally in map view, and through interpretation to depth in 3D. Best practices for magnetic survey methods and magnetic interpretation exist in all areas of land based geophysical survey methodology - mineral exploration, hydrocarbon exploration, geological mapping, archeological mapping, and in military applications. At sea, and particularly under the sea, sophisticated magnetic surveys are being done, but it can be argued that these are primarily in niche applications, for example in naval mine-hunting and UXO applications. Magnetic data is not normally collected on AUVs and ROVs conducting mapping and hydrographic survey operations. OFG has developed physical and mathematical calibration routines so that magnetometers can be mounted directly onto AUV and ROV bodies where significant heading errors and magnetic gradients exist. This simplifies the routine deployment of magnetometers on AUVs and ROVs for mineral exploration and other magnetic survey applications without the need for towed bodies, ungainly mounting frames, or degaussing of the survey equipment. Our experience shows that magnetometers can be operated routinely on AUVs and ROVs and that with careful processing useful maps can be produced routinely at low cost.

A process that allows selective flotation separation of low Cu/S ratio minerals (chalcopyrite and pyrite) from high Cu/S ratio minerals (bornite and chalcocite) from a mixed copper mineral concentrate under controlled oxidative-reductive potential conditions has been developed. The process has been extensively tested on samples with varying mineralogy using laboratory batch flotation tests and mini pilot plant trials.In this process, the mixed final copper mineral concentrate is purged with nitrogen, and then treated with sodium dithionite to achieve a slurry Eh in the -200 to -100 mV standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) range. Flotation was then carried out using nitrogen gas. As a result, a low Cu/S ratio concentrate (<1.3) and a high Cu/S ratio (>1.6) tailing stream were produced. QEMSCAN analysis of the flotation products showed that more than 85 per cent of the chalcopyrite and 95 per cent of the pyrite reported to the froth concentrate. Chalcocite and bornite were almost evenly distributed between the concentrate and tailing streams.Surface analysis studies, focused on the mechanism of separation, showed that at a negative redox potential xanthate and possibly dixanthogen are the dominant hydrophobic species on the surface of chalcopyrite and pyrite. As a result, the flotation of these minerals remained unaffected. In contrast, a much lower concentration of xanthate species on the surface of chalcocite and bornite particles was observed. Therefore, it is likely that at low Eh the copper xanthate complex desorbs from the chalcocite and bornite surfaces, causing a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and the diminished floatability of chalcocite and bornite.CITATION:Ametov, I, Harmer, S, Grano, S and Alford, R, 2014. Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. Turbulence and its distribution are of great importance in flotation, and have received considerable attention recently. However, there is no mature technique to measure turbulence in three-phase (liquid-solid-gas) industrial flotation cells due to the opaque, highly aggressive and abrasive nature of the slurry involved. Previous research has shown that the piezoelectric vibration sensor (PVS) is a promising tool for turbulence measurement in industrial flotation cells. The PVS is a robust device that converts mechanical vibration to electrical signal, from which turbulence information can be extracted. An improved calibration method has allowed development of a frequency model to calculate the force applied to the sensor. Experimental results and comparison with laser doppler anemometry (LDA) have shown that the PVS can measure fluid kinetic energy, which is related to turbulent kinetic energy, a parameter used in the literature to represent turbulence in flotation. Laboratory measurement in a two-phase (water and air) 60 L cell and with slurry in a 3.5 L cell gave good stable results and mostly consistent trends between the measured turbulence profile and cell operation. When applied in a 300 m3 industrial cell filled with water, the addition of air or slurry to the cell resulted in a shift in the turbulence profile. This is expected because a change in fluid density will change the force applied to the sensor. "Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. "This presentation aims to serve as a primer on conservation, research and regulatory organizations interested in the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. It will also consider a recent, early-stage proposal for an experimental SMS mining operation aimed at increasing our understanding of mining impacts and ecosystem recovery.Over the past 5 years, as deep-sea mining has been moving closer to reality, it has attracted growing attention from deep-sea biologists, conservation groups and operators of deep-sea research vehicles and observing systems. Several new international research organizations have emerged that have a direct interest in deep-sea biodiversity conservation, and the environmental impact of ocean mining. These include INDEEP, which evolved from the 10-year Census of Marine Life program, the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative that has recently hosted several high profile international meetings, and the VentBase forum of academics, industry and regulators that aims to develop environmental best practices and informational documents for all stakeholders involved in Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) mining. InterRidge, currently hosted by China, represents a decades old partnership of deep-sea biologists and economic geologists who discovered the more than 100 known hydrothermal vent fields and SMS deposits on midocean ridges and in other settings of seafloor volcanism. In 2012 InterRidge formed an industry liaison group to examine how the mid-ocean ridge researcher community could contribute to the development of environmentally responsible practices for the exploration and exploitation of SMS deposits. While initial meetings with industry were promising, InterRidge members are currently debating the relative merits of sharing exploration know-how and understanding of vent ecosystems with industry, against the need to maintain their independence as stewards of deep-sea ecosystems."

In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control is complex and depends on many dynamic process variables. Good control strategies ensure that a mill is operating as close to optimal as possible, resulting in significant economic benefits to an operation. Pueblo Viejo, a gold mine in the Dominican Republic, has been actively improving their control strategies since start-up in 2012, and one of these initiatives was to install an acoustic monitoring system on the SAG mill. The data from the system is used to optimise the mill’s performance by limiting the time the mill is either running too quiet or too loud. The lower limit is an indication that the charge in the mill is too high for efficient breakage or that the mill speed is too low and grinding media are not striking the toe of the charge. Conversely, when the acoustic emissions from the mill are too high, this can indicate that the balls are striking above the toe of the charge, resulting in inefficient grinding and excessive liner and lifter wear. Adjusting mill operating conditions to keep acoustic emissions in the ‘sweet spot’ between these limits results in more efficient grinding.Pueblo Viejo installed a Metso SmartEar™ to monitor the acoustic emissions of their SAG mill in January 2013. This system has been installed on many mills around the world and is specifically designed for optimising SAG mill control. One system output is the impact counter which measures steel-on-steel impacts on the mill shell. The impact counter uses both frequency and time domain analysis to approximate the number of ball impacts per minute. This method of analysis excludes parts of the sound signal not associated with steel-on-steel impacts and gives an accurate measure of this critical control parameter. After the acoustic system was installed, Pueblo Viejo collected data to determine the upper and lower limits for the impact count variable. The live data is available to the mill operators and it is used as one of the key operating variables to control the mill.Through continuous improvement and the use of advanced technologies like SmartEar™, Pueblo Viejo are improving the control and operation of their SAG mill, resulting in reduced liner wear, more efficient mill performance and optimised energy consumption. "Environmental considerations are a key driver within marine mining consenting processes across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. At the individual project level, the environmental effects of any given development project are typically defined within the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). For well-established industries operating in well-studied environments this approach typically works well. However, where emerging industries or existing industries that are operating within new environments are concerned, there may be significant knowledge gaps pertaining to our understanding of how specific anthropogenic practices or activities interact with the marine environment. These knowledge gaps can cause significant uncertainties pertaining to the likely significant effects of a project. Such uncertainties may result in barriers to industry and economic progress, increased consenting risks, increased project costs to be borne by individual project developers through the acquisition of additional environmental data during the pre-consent or post-consent project phases, project delays and/or significant increases in environmental monitoring burdens with corresponding increases in project costs."

At the Century mine in North West Queensland, MMG produces lead and zinc concentrates. The current production rate is close to 500 000 t of zinc per annum. Graphite is the main gangue in the orebody and a substantial quantity of chemicals are used to achieve an acceptable depression of graphite and other gangue materials in the current operation. In the future, it is anticipated that the content of graphite in the orebody will increase while the zinc grade will gradually drop. This scenario illustrates the importance of an optimised suite of flotation chemicals to maximise concentrate grade and recovery. As an alternative to the current reagent suite where dextrin is used to depress graphite, laboratory test work and subsequent plant trials were conducted with alternative depressants. These depressants facilitated both graphite depression and elevated zinc grades in the rougher concentrate. As an added benefit, it was also observed that the silica content in the zinc concentrate was reduced in the presence of the biopolymer selected for the plant trials. Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

Process optimisation and continuous improvement are usually acknowledged when making a process more effective, efficient and transparent. During the last few decades, thousands of companies around the world have used total quality concepts in order to establish a continuous improvement process in their companies. Typically these companies apply some kind of Kaizen-type tools and expect results in the short term; however, the great majority of companies are poorly implementing these continuous improvement programs.Usually the most common reasons for failure of the program are lack of commitment from leaders, lack of discipline and engagement from the team to follow process and lack of clear targets for the program. When the results do not come at the expected timeline, it is common to simply drop the current process and apply a different approach from another company or consulting firm.This paper will explore some successful cases of companies that have invested time and effort to establish a reliable and sustainable process of continuous improvement. The focus will be case studies of mines and smelters around the world that use the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle to increase productivity with the best services and lowest costs. In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. "In sulfide nickel deposits throughout the world, pentlandite and pyrrhotite are commonly found together along with varying amounts of chalcopyrite and platinum group minerals (PGMs). The mafic or ultramafic host silicates associated with the sulfide mineralisation commonly exhibit a complex assemblage of magnesium bearing silicates, many of which themselves contain significant nickel. Four types of ore are proposed, each presenting their own processing challenges. These are: economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE (platinum group element) in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with low pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios  economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with moderate to high pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios uneconomic high pyrrhotite: low tenor deposits low-grade low sulfide, high MgO ± PGE deposits that can sometimes be economically mined and processed.The grades and recoveries of nickel concentrates produced from sulfide ores can be significantly impacted by the ore mineral texture, the nickel tenor of the sulfides, and the polytype of pyrrhotite which may be either hexagonal (non-magnetic) or monoclinic (magnetic). The mineralogy of the silicates is also of great importance, especially the magnesium silicates and those which tend to produce particles which are asbestiform or which affect slurry viscosity. Other magnesium silicates such as serpentine carry nickel in solid solution, limiting the recovery entitlement of nickel by flotation because serpentine is not amenable to sulfide flotation mechanisms. Differences in plant flow sheets and reagent assemblages are required to effectively separate these minerals.Experience from a variety of plant operations and from extensive flow sheet development programs are discussed. Recovery of gold from gold ores has been driven by the available technology and its configuration in the process plant flow sheet.Conventional practice in test work programs has the ore being ground fine (to 106 or 75 microns) to ensure liberation ahead of leaching or flotation. This paper identifies that, in many cases, gold and gold sulfide carriers will liberate and be recovered to a concentrate at much coarser sizes.There is an exponential increase in energy consumption relative to particle size reduction. This impact becomes extreme when comparing crushing a product to 1 mm against grinding to 75?microns.The resultant reduction in energy consumption when liberating and separating at 1 mm or coarser compared to grinding to 75 microns can be in the order of 15 kWh/t or 60 per cent of energy in the comminution circuit.Recovery of free gold and gold sulfide carriers by preconcentration (using continuous gravity devices such as the InLine Pressure Jig), combined with flotation of the fine gold and gold carriers, can result in significant power savings.There are multiple locations within the flow sheet that can be targeted using this process, including recovery in the cyclone underflow of existing plants, preconcentration ahead of the plant or complete greenfield, low-energy process plants designed from first principles based on data from a Gekko developed test work regime.We will describe the process of defining mineralogy in the laboratory and the decision-making process through to actual applications in the field.Several examples will be provided, including a South African Witwatersrand gold ore, several Australian gold ores and others, indicating the benefits of this process and where it has been brought to commercial reality.CITATION:Gray, A H, Davies, M and Theletsane, G, 2014. "Since being reported to the 2012 UMI in Shanghai, the Cook Islands has been steadily developing for the commencement of it Seabed Minerals sector in its large Exclusive Economic Zone which contain a vast and unique Manganese Nodule resource, estimated at 10 billion tonnes1. At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."

In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations.
