"Mining has been a staple to technological advancement ever since the dawn of time. By harnessing the different physical and chemical properties that each mining commodity brings to the table, more and more innovation is developed and manufactured. As these non-renewable resources continue to be extracted, the industry as a whole faces a challenge in finding the next economical deposit as well as declining grade at the current operations. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed. This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include one underground and three open pit mines that are precious metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed. The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are also reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)."

"Ruskin Dam, located near Mission, British Columbia, was constructed in 1929 and 1930 and comprises of a concrete gravity dam structure founded on bedrock. At the right abutment, which consists mostly of dense to very dense sands and silt, the dam abuts against overburden soils, and connects to a cutoff wall system consisting of sloping concrete slabs. Significant seepage and piping issues were encountered during first filling of the reservoir in 1930. In 2012, BC Hydro, the owner of the dam, awarded a contract for the construction of seepage control measures at the right abutment, including construction of a plastic concrete cut-off wall extending upstream of the dam, a plastic concrete seepage training wall extending downstream of the dam, tie-in of the new cutoff wall to the dam, consisting of jet grouting of the soils adjacent to the dam to allow for the construction of the special cutoff connecting the cutoff wall to the dam, and construction of additional jet-grouting ground improvement downstream of the dam.Integral to the upgrade was the requirement for the special tie-in cutoff wall, consisting of a highly flexible, impermeable membrane to connect the concrete dam to the new, 1 m thick plastic concrete cutoff wall. The tie-in extends vertically into bedrock through the dam and jet grout columns constructed adjacent and beneath the overhanging portion of the dam at the right abutment. The membrane is required to survive the anticipated earthquake induced deformation between the dam and the abutment soils.This paper describes the processes used to develop a material suitable to meet the specified flexibility and permeability criteria, as well as the innovative construction techniques utilized to construct the slot and place the bituminous material within it. The final dimensions of the slot were in the order of 7 m long by 25 m deep by 0.17 m wide. The bituminous material was placed under a head of water which was required to maintain stability of the slot, and was placed at temperatures in excess of 120 degrees Celsius."

"Sociotechnical systems are everywhere in the modern industrial world. Sociotechnical systems describe how humans interact with technology throughout a variety of processes. These systems are prevalent in modern industrial settings, such as operating mines. Safety and health management systems (SHMSs) are complex sociotechnical structures designed with the aim of managing and reducing occupational risk. U.S. mining companies are voluntarily adopting SHMSs to supplement regulatory safety compliance efforts. Like all complex sociotechnical systems there are a wide variety of approaches and adoption philosophies around a SHMS. Many SHMSs suffer from high levels of redundancies, which manifest themselves in diverse ways: duplicate processes, forms, permits, and tracking mechanisms. These redundancies have severe impacts on the overall system and absorb critical culture and leadership “energy”. A recent study initiated by the University of Utah and sponsored by the Alpha Foundation is investigating the effectiveness of SHMSs across 15 different U.S. mining sites. A large amount of data has been captured to help characterize elements of SHMSs and correlate their impacts on safety outcomes. Many variables were assessed in the study. Those of importance to this paper are the variables describing the robustness of the sociotechnical aspects of the SHMS. Two such variables are the overall integration of the SHMS within the whole system and how data is managed. Data management in this context deals with the approach to capturing, analyzing, and acting on data within the system. As well, systems are integrated around controlled, data-sharing mechanisms. It has been found that wide variety of approaches has been taken to integrate the SHMS within the governing management philosophy at a given site. A series of case studies is presented that develop some specific best practices for proper data management and integration of SHMSs.Introduction and Project Background Managing occupational health and safety can be done in many different ways, and with many different approaches, but is often based on the host country’s regulatory and industrial culture. However, many companies have extended their effort beyond the regulatory requirements of their host nation and have implemented Safety and Health Management Systems. The goal of these efforts is to reduce and eliminate occupational risk. Many health and safety practitioners have a hard time justifying various elements of health and safety management. There is a lack of institutional knowledge that measures and assesses the effectiveness of these Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) elements. To better understand the effectiveness of SHMSs the Alpha Foundation has funded a research project with the University of Utah. The title of the project is “Characterization and Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems in the U.S. Mining Industry.” The research team will assess the SHMSs of 15 United States mine sites. The outcome of the project will be a method to characterize the strength of the SHMS elements, assess a culture and leadership index, and finally establish correlations between elemental risk and safety outcomes. The study is currently in progress. However, many important outcomes have already been observed, particularly on the data management practices within an SHMS."

"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

"This paper presents a critical review of the fragmentation data obtained from some large open pit copper and gold mines. Database ncludes 35 mines with Uniaxial Compressive Strength values ranging from 19 MPa to 227 MPa (2756 psi to 32923 psi). Variation in the fragmentation data and the causes are discussed in detail. Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) in drilling and blasting was shown to have significant impact on fragmentation. In addition, controllable blast design parameters including drill pattern, powder factor, blast timing, stemming length, etc as well as the large blast sizes havesignificant potential to improve fragmentation. Feed size requirements of crushing and grinding circuits were discussed in detail. The paper discusses the effects of different size fractions (top size, 80 %passing size and % passing 10 mm (0.5 in)) on the downstream processes and the role of the fragmentation model in the mine to mill process. Blast domains based on rock strength and structure canbe established by using a fragmentation model which is calibrated using measured fragmentation data. This allows the blast engineer to compensate for changing rock characteristics and stabilize the ROMfragmentation size and result in increased crusher and mill throughput. Two case studies were presented to demonstrate the benefits achieved in downstream processes. Main benefits were reduced downtime at crusher circuits, improved mill throughput as well as reduced total operating cost. A simple relationbetween uniaxial compressive strength and powder factor was proposed using the database for the optimized mines as a guideline to allow site engineers to compare their sites against the other sites."

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. As plans to mine deep-sea massive sulphide deposits and polymetallic nodules progress, the environmental concerns grow. "A deep mixing method (DMM) foundation was selected by the Project Team for a very large LNG facility in West Africa. As described in a companion paper, this foundation consists of a large number of columns installed by mixing cement with in-situ soils. The foundations are arrayed as a variety of honeycombed type configurations which, if installed to desired specifications, can provide a robust foundation alternative. The foundation is capable of distributing loads and limiting settlements even if some of the soil in the columns is not fully mixed during installation. An important part of the overall quality assessment program, therefore, involved developing a testing program to verify the methodology. In addition the impact of potential defects in columns on the overall foundation integrity had to be assessed. This paper describes some of the preliminary work done to establish the requirements for the quality assurance program. A key component of this program involved the sampling frequency used to assess potential defects in the columns. To verify the column integrity 104- mm samples were taken continuously at a selected frequency through the 23 m long columns. The preliminary work described in this paper demonstrated that the appropriate sampling frequency depends on both the desired reliability level as well as the number of defective columns encountered during testing.Initial finite element analyses were performed to assess the extent that defects could occur in columns within the honeycombed structure without adversely affecting the overall foundation integrity. The results from this work demonstrated that the spatial location of the defects was critical to properly assessing the foundation integrity.In addition to column sampling a load test was performed as part of the foundation verification process. The methods used to apply appropriate loads so that loads at the bottom of the columns approached design values are discussed in the paper.The results obtained from this preliminary study were then used to help develop a more comprehensive assessment program, described in a companion paper, to determine the robustness of the DMM foundations for both the LNG processing facilities and a condensate tank.IntroductionFoundations constructed with the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) can be an attractive and cost efficient alternate to other deep foundation options. This foundation is constructed by mixing soil and cement with an auger type drill. The foundation is usually constructed with a dual auger system that simultaneously creates two contiguous columns called foundation elements. Many elements are then arranged in a honeycombed configuration to create the overall foundation (Figure 1). A desired column strength can be obtained by varying the volume of cement added to the columns, the mixing rate of the soil and stroking sequence."

"Although sensor-based ore sorting has gained significant attention recently, sorting gold deposits still face a high level of skepticism by gold mining companies. In order to shed some light on the matter, this article looks at two different gold deposits that were examined using X-ray Fluorescence, Electromagnetic and X-ray Transmission sensors. The heterogeneity of each sample is measured based on the assay results of each particle and is related to its sortability. Multivariate linear regression analysis was also performed on the XRF results to find potential proxy elements for detecting gold. The results from these deposits were varied and each sample showed different levels of sortability. While both X-ray sensors proved efficient for different deposits, the electromagnetic sensor failed to produce any promising results. Despite unsatisfactory result for one sample, this technology can have significant advantages in terms of lowering the operational costs and improving head grades and recoveries providing that the deposit is amenable to such separation methods. Therefore, it is important to mention that sensor-based ore sorting is ore and sensor dependent, and as a result, it cannot be applied and be beneficial to all deposits. Therefore, amenability tests are required in order to examine the potential for sensor-based ore sorting before one can reject the idea.INTRODUCTION Although sensor-based ore sorting has gained significant attention recently, sorting gold deposits still face a high level of skepticism by gold mining companies. Except for a few cases presented previously, no new case studies have been published. Previously, mines such as Kloof Gold Mine in South Africa used an optical sorter to sort their waste stockpile in 2003–2004 (Von Ketelhodt, 2009) and then again in 2009 (Von Ketelhodt, Falcon, & Falcon, 2011). More recently, Coeur Operations utilized an XRT sorter for their Kensington Mine in Alaska (Lasley, 2014) and also Anglo-American Platinum used an XRF sorter to pre-concentrate Platinum Group Metals through an algorithm that used chrome, copper and nickel as proxies (Rule, Fouchee, & Swart, 2015)."

"A set of experimental batch leaching tests studied the effect of pH, time, temperature, and stirring speed on the relative Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe leaching yields of an oxidized copper-cobalt ore sample in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The results were statistically analyzed and modelled using the structural equation modelling method. Models showed that Cu, Co, and Ni leaching yields were strong functions of the leaching time and leaching temperature, whereas the Fe leaching yield depended on the leaching temperature, stirring speed, and pH. Under optimum leaching conditions yields were 99.8% Cu, 82.4% Co, 91.3% Ni, and 30.6% Fe.RÉSUMÉ Une série d’essais expérimentaux de lixiviation en bâchée ont été menés pour étudier l’effet du pH, de la durée d’attaque, de la température et de la vitesse de brassage sur les rendements relatifs de lixiviation du cuivre (Cu), du cobalt (Co), du nickel (Ni) et du fer (Fe) d’un échantillon de minerai de cuivre-cobalt oxydé dans une solution aqueuse d’acide chlorhydrique. Les résultats ont été analysés et modélisés statistiquement à l’aide de la méthode de modélisation par équation structurelle (SEM, de l’anglais structural equation modelling). Les modèles ont montré que les rendements de lixiviation du Cu, du Co et du Ni dépendaient énormément de la durée d’attaque et de la température de la lixiviation ; le rendement de lixiviation du Fe, quant à lui, dépendait de la température de la lixiviation, de la vitesse de brassage et du pH. Dans des conditions optimales de lixiviation, les rendements étaient de 99,8 % pour le Cu, de 82,4 % pour le Co, de 91,3 % pour le Ni et de 30,6 % pour le Fe. INTRODUCTIONThe Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo hosts the northwestern part of the Central African Copperbelt. This region abounds with large, rich deposits of sulfide and oxidized copper-cobalt ores. In general, the main valuable minerals present are malachite (CuCO3Cu(OH)2) and heterogenite (CoO(OH)). Common impurities found in heterogenite are Cu, Ni, Si, Al, Mn, and Fe. The substitution of Co by other cations (e.g., Cu, Ni, and Fe) has an influence on the crystallinity of heterogenite (Deliens, 1974). In general, well-crystallized varieties of heterogenite have lower impurity contents, whereas amorphous heterogenite types usually contain more impurities (Thys et al., 2009). Further, in heterogenite, Co can occur in the 2+ and 3+ oxidation states. The gangue generally consists of quartz (SiO2), talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2), kaolinite (SiO2·Al2O3·2H2O), limonite (Fe2O3·3H2O), and goethite (FeO(OH)). Oxidized copper-cobalt ores are often treated by hydrometallurgical methods, whereas sulfide ores are often treated by flotation or pyrometallurgy, depending on their grades. Hydrometallurgical methods typically entail selectively dissolving the metals of interest (Cu, Co, and Ni) in aqueous solutions (leaching), transferring the dissolved metals to an organic solution, and retransferring these to a second aqueous solution (solvent extraction). Copper and nickel are readily dissolved in an acidic aqueous media. In contrast, cobalt is difficult to dissolve, especially if it is present in the third oxidation state; however, this species becomes soluble after it is reduced to Co2+ (Mwema, Mpoyo, & Kafumbila, 2002; Kime & Makgoale, 2016)."

"In today’s tough mining environment, the key difference between surviving and thriving is how effectively miners optimize their mining operations. This paper explores the compounding effects material fragmentation has on mining costs and productivity. Starting with Drilling & Blasting and moving through Loading, Hauling and Crushing, we will illustrate the opportunities to improve operating costs and thus reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the total mining system. Material size and volume requirements are defined by the needs of the mill or plant, and drive the rest of the mining operation from the bench through the primary crusher. At the start of the cycle, where the rock mass is drilled and blasted, the degree of fragmentation and the muck pile configuration is determined, as are the effects on cost and productivity of all subsequent operations. The cost of managing oversize material, including secondary handling, overloading, reduced diggability, higher load factors, extra pass loading, increased wear factors and reduced throughput rates are all opportunities for improvement. INTRODUCTION Having visited many mine sites, customers are asking about the end to end mining value stream from loading to the crusher and how to measure the cumulative effects on each part of the mining value chain. All too often improvements with the drilling and blasting may impact fragmentation but do not improve the diggability so the net change on cycle times or fill ratios is perceived to be negative at the point of loading but they may have a measured improvement going through the primary crusher. This makes it imperative to measure performance at each segment of the overall cycle and not just to the crusher but thru it. The mine material process originates with solid rock, in-situ, and progresses to the output of the primary crusher. Once the material has passed the primary crusher the fragmentation size will be fairly consistent and promote consistent throughput of the plant or mill. In late 2015 a team was conducting a reassessment visit to a mining site where we had conducted the original assessment the previous year. Though many recommendations had been implemented some had been so recent they had not resulted in the expected improvements. Several of our discussions kept returning to the impact fragmentation has to both the individual components of the mining cycle but also the effects compounded throughout the end to end process. Let’s move on to the big picture before we zoom in on any specific operation. To get from native solid rock in the ground to a concentrate or a saleable rock product we have the same steps from one end of the chain to the other. We start with a good geological understanding of the rock type, characteristics and structure to design a program to drill and blast the rock. The height of the bench is relevant to the annual production requirements and the specific digging equipment models best sized to make that production possible. The equipment selection influences the bench height which has a minimum and maximum hole diameter to maintain a safe blasting operation. The diameter of hole burden and spacing all contribute to a good distribution of explosives in the rock mass that maximize the fragmentation and preconditioning of the rock when blasted. The timing and sequencing of hole initiation will yield a fragmentation ratio and diggability factor. Fragmentation size adjustments will change the meters drilled per cube and the explosives consumption will change accordingly. Drill cost is measured by meter drilled so a direct relationship exists between cost and fragmentation sized achieved."

"This study applies the concept of the difficulty of tunnelling by drilling an blasting (D&B) to selectedcases from the Brazilian tunnelling industry. The difficulty of tunnelling has been defined in previouswork as the difference of specific drilling (SD) from industrial average trend: easier when SD is lowerthan average, more difficult when SD is higher than average. Results show how tunnels in Brazil tend tobe unrealistically more difficult to excavate when compared to similar excavations in similar geologies elsewhere in the world. It is thoroughly discussed the reason for such anomaly (up to +90% SD compared to industrial average). One reason could be the lack of options amongst explosive products on the brazilian market. Only ANFO and explosive emulsions are available in Brazil. Lacking high VOD(Velocity of Detonation) products might result in reducing the maximum allowable burden amongstproduction holes, therefore increasing SD. Another reason could be found in the tunnel designers’tendency of choosing D&B as excavation method for weak rock masses that would benefit from mechanical excavation. The reason to this tendency can be partly found in the lack of availability of mechanical excavation machines in the brazilian market. Blasting in weak rock masses requires more careful smooth blasting, hence a closer spacing amongst contour holes to avoid costly overbreak: this increases SD. A third reason could be found in the lack of skill amongst the local workforce. When dealing with unskilled workers the blast designers naturally tend to avoid highly optimized blasts thatrequire very skilled workforce to be realized on field. The designer in this case tends to leave the blastdesign simpler but more robust, at the cost of higher specific drilling and specific charge. The conclusions suggest that this unrealistic difficulty when compared to world average could be a simptom of the so-called “Brazilian cost” within the tunnelling industry."

"This paper first discusses the basic attributes of sustainable mining and the responsibilities of various steak holders including mining companies, governments, and engineers. It is followed by a brief overview of the current practice on regulations, inspections, waste management and mine closure planning in Canadian mining industry. A case study is then presented as an example of sustainable mining where mine planning, mineral recovery, environment protection, reclamation and community development were integral parts of the overall strategy. A comparison of the mine site before and after mining is made to demonstrate the ""best practice"" in modern mining.Sustainability in Mineral Resource Development Extraction of mineral resources and other natural resources on the Earth has been and will continue to be an essential activity necessary to support human’s life. We live on the planet and depend on the available resources to survive. The extracted materials form the base to support modern life. However, we must be aware of the fact that mineral resources are limited on the Earth and may not last forever. Every time we extract one ton of materials, there is one ton less. They are not able to regenerate or regrow. One can ask a simple question: How long will they last? Or, is there anything left for our great grandchildren and many generations to come? The answer is not simple. Some minerals have become scarce or about to deplete. Some minerals may last longer. The reserve of a type of minerals depends on what we have discovered and the minable amount depends on accessibility and technology we have. Even if there are minerals in the deep ground, we may be limited by our technological capability. At the same time, we also need to understand the action of mineral extraction from the ground and the consequences of that action. Mineral extraction is a very hard work. We must break the ground to extract the ore, either through surface mining or underground mining. This action means disturbance of the land where we live. The disturbance is much more visible in surface mining than underground mining. The disturbed land, if not properly reclaimed after mining, is not going to be reusable. The very purpose of extracting minerals from the ground is to support our life but the action has a negative impact on our life. How can we reduce and limit disturbance of land from the action of minerals extraction? How can we make the disturbed land reusable? These issues must be properly addressed and a balance achieved."

"Several base metal plants operate in low grade/high tonnage conditions which impose strict cost control on all fronts for their operations to remain profitable. This leads to decisions regarding plant design, procurement, operations and maintenance that often favor cost minimization over value optimization. This may hinder the representativeness of the metal accounting systems while this should be a priority in a low margin environment. Such poor representativeness not only creates confusion in plant scheduling but can also hide suboptimal metallurgical performance. Furthermore, this situation can run undetected for a while since one dominant feature of a poor metal accounting system is its poor self-awareness. During their practice, authors have particularly identified measurement bias and reproducibility, as well as their impact on metal recoveries as areas of concern. These issues have not been extensively reviewed in the specific context of precious metals in base metal plants. Pragmatic solutions are proposed either at the design stage for a new project or to retrofit an actual operation. These solutions should be based on a business analysis that set a value of information matching the contribution of precious metals as well as the potential to use such information to act toward increasing plant profitability. Conclusions are that trade-offs are an inherent part of the design/audit/retrofit of any metal accounting system in any plant processing either base or precious metals. However, compromises must be evaluated on economic/technical ground.INTRODUCTION Every mineral processing plant must produce metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where estimated saleable metal flows and inventories are published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimization, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that state of the art metal accounting is instrumental for mining companies to reach and sustain high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard, Randolph, & Wortley, 2014). However, producing a metal accounting report involves much more than just printing it (Lachance, Leroux, & Gariépy, 2015a). The underlying metal accounting system (Figure 1) is responsible not only for the reliable production of the metal accounting reports but also for the quality of the outcome. "Scrubbing both horizontal (drum) and vertical (attrition) are considered simple unit operations in the beneficiation of phosphate ores. In general, the operating conditions are fixed at high solids content based on the experience of the engineering or equipment manufacturing company responsible of designing this beneficiation step. Nevertheless, scrubbing is a complex unit operation designed to clean the surfaces of phosphate mineral particles of slimes, break loose weak inclusions or attached particles of impurities, and break aggregates of clayish material. Therefore, it is considered that as high solids content as possible should be used to enhance particle-particle interactions (impact and rubbing) without taking into consideration the rheology of the system. However, scrubbing unit operations design requires studying the balance between the increase of particle-particle interactions with the cushion effect that may occur when slimes, clays and fines decrease the availability of free water increasing the apparent viscosity of the phosphate slurry up to that of a paste consistency. This paper presents data from laboratory tests to determine the best operating conditions for the design of these unit operations based on the highest P2O5 grade obtained with the lowest impurities for different size fractions. INTRODUCTION In the beneficiation of phosphate ores, unit operations such as horizontal scrubbing (drum) and vertical scrubbing (attrition) are considered simple unit operations. Therefore, little attention is given to the design of horizontal and vertical scrubbing during the basic engineering studies, and the detail engineering stage, the manufacturers recommending “standard” units and operating conditions based on their experience. Due diligence of several beneficiation phosphate plants at industrial scale indicates that a deficient scrubbing of the phosphate ore results in significant problems in downstream unit operations, such as classification, clarification, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, dewatering, and filtration. Scrubbing is in fact a complex unit operation designed to clean the surfaces of phosphate mineral particles of slimes (clays and fines), break loose weak inclusions or attached particles of impurities, and break aggregates of clayish material. Two phenomena occur, the particle-particle interaction (impact and rubbing), and the rheological effects of releasing significant amount of fines into the slurry. Therefore, high solids contents are recommended to enhance the particle-particle interactions, which may result in a change in the rheological regime of the system due to the slimes, clays, and fines decreasing the availability of free water. This increases the apparent viscosity of the system up to that of paste consistency resulting in a cushion effect that suppresses scrubbing. Under these conditions, not all fines are release and rejected (deslimed), downstream unit operations being affected by the release of clays, resulting in P2O5 losses."

Presplitting is a form of blasting that when executed properly will create a smooth wall that will minimize secondary conditioning. In recent years, presplitting has become a popular technique to be used in both the mining and construction industries, however, presplitting fails on many occasions because of ‘geologic conditions’. This is typically because of improper explosive loads consisting of overloading and underloading blastholes. In this paper the authors introduce new factors such as a presplit factor which varies for different rock types, selection criteria for the spacing of presplits, and the optimization of explosive load for the technique of Precision Presplitting.

"Cyanide is a leaching agent for precious metals commonly used in gold ore processing. Cyanide exists in various forms (including free, complexed as weak or strong complexes, and as ions such as cyanate and thiocyanate), so its detection, speciation and analysis in processing or environmental samples can be complex. This paper will review best practices for cyanide sampling and preservation in the field, interferences and pretreatment methods required prior to sample analysis and analytical methods that are used for cyanide species. Titrimetric, flow injection ligand exchange, spectrophotometric, colorimetric, potentiometric, amperometric, and chromatography techniques will be discussed and their chemistries, detection limits, advantages and limitations will be described.INTRODUCTION Cyanide is well known to be an extremely toxic species. Accurate cyanide measurement in effluent from mines is critical from an environmental perspective. Its measurement is also an important control parameter in the recovery of gold using cyanidation. Cyanide chemistry is diverse and complex, and cyanide analysis can be challenging as a result of and because of limitations in understanding of analytical methods. Various chemical mechanisms can form or destroy cyanide, and the sample matrix or preservation chemicals can also affect analytical results. These interferences make the collection of reliable cyanide measurements challenging and can start as soon as the sample is collected, during laboratory pre-treatment and during analysis. This paper reviews different methods of cyanide measurement. "Mining industry as a source of raw material is essential to society however, it lacks of good reputation due to the type of management historically applied to many of its social and environmental impacts. It is argued that this situation has hampered the obtaining of social license to operate of a lot of mining projects around the world. The last considerations are very common in Latin American countries. As a result, the mining sector has understood that the viability of the business long term is associated with more profit for the shareholders but also with activities that improve the livelihoods of local communities, enhance the capabilities of local governments and preserve the ecosystems around the projects. Nevertheless, recent studios have shown that most of the current advances to incorporate sustainability concepts in mining have been mainly focused on control and the prevention of environmental and social impacts of extractive activities. Thus, contributing to the development of territories around mining projects constitutes a fundamental aspect of the business competitiveness through reducing cost and risks of stopping projects, innovating new ways of relationship with stakeholders, improving the level of reputation of the industry as well as its position in the market. However, this contribution requires formal strategies and models that enable companies understand the different resources in the territories where their mining activities are developed and those resource transformations, in order to establish the best way to articulate the project with the territory, pursuing an effective contribution to its development, truly sustainable over time even after the mine closure. CONTEXT Currently in the world but especially in developing countries such as Latin Americans, different stakeholders are increasingly vigilant of how mining companies carry out their activities in terms of socio-economic and environmental management of territories, not only for its impact on the livelihoods of the communities that inhabit them, but also because many demanders of raw materials -both countries and companies- have set sustainability standards as a prerequisite to establishing business relationships with mining companies, such as the recently declared Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 (UN, 2015). Accordingly, decide underinvest or not to invest in sustainability issues carries risks for mining companies. However, invest much in the wrong way may involve the same risks. Managers are concerned to ensure profits, and therefore they decide carefully how to invest in the areas of production, R & D or marketing. Likewise, they should think strategically about investing in initiatives related to sustainability. This if they really want that those investments in fact help to improve the competitiveness of the company. The mining industry benefits from natural capital that extracts, so it should implement strategies that lead to remunerate such benefit to the territories (Almaguer, 2007). One option is through the transformation of natural capital in other types of non-existent capital or poorly developed in their areas of influence. In this way, the value generated by the extraction of underground resources is shared and additionally contributing to improving the quality of life of the communities. Historically, mining industry has been into several problems to achieve this, which represents one of the aspects that has most influenced the current reputation of mining industry in some regions of Latin America. Many communities, local governments and civil society organizations continue to associate this activity with the destruction of the social fabric and ecosystems in the territories, and their opposition against companies working in the areas has led to affect the operational continuity of many projects (Hamann, 2003; Prno and Scott, 2012; Slack, 2012)."

The risk of allocation in construction contracts is a primary concern for all parties. For contracts involving subsurface construction the allocation of site condition risk is critical. In the past one hundred years technological advances fundamentally changed how that risk is allocated; yet another shift in this risk allocation may lie just over the horizon due to advances in geotechnical data management. Around the world initiatives are underway to make geotechnical datasets more open and accessible. In the United States some states like Kentucky have already made geotechnical data readily accessible. This proliferation of geotechnical data in the U.S. may impact the allocation of subsurface risk in construction contracts. Many construction contracts contain a differing site condition clause. That clause allows for a modification of the contract price or schedule if the ground conditions encountered by the contractor differ materially from either what was indicated in the contract documents or would be reasonably expected. A contractor, however, is typically not entitled to that modification if the contractor knew or should have known of the adverse conditions encountered. Courts have interpreted the “should have known” language as requiring contractors to make a reasonable site investigation prior to bidding the project. If geotechnical data is available and accessible and reveals the adverse condition the contractor encounters, courts could find that the contractor should have known of the condition and thus will not be entitled to a modification based on the differing site condition clause. Accordingly, the U.S. could be on the threshold of significant shifts in how the risk of differing site conditions is allocated in construction contracts.

"In this work a blasting seismograph was tested on a vibration shaker controlled by a single-point laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). A total of 43 tests were made to measure the transfer properties(transmissibility and phase shift) of the basic elements of the full monitoring chain and investigate theperformance of the full system. The main elements of the seismograph are described by second ordertransfer functions with typical parameters calibrated through nonlinear fit of the measured responses. The resulting transfer function is used to compare the behavior of the tested seismograph with fourtheoretical seismographs representative of those used in blasting. Fifteen theoretical inputs are runthrough the transfer function of each seismograph to assess their steady-response. The error (expressed as gain) in the peak velocity has been assessed. It varies from -1.5 to 2.3 dB (equivalent to atransmissibility of 0.84 to 1.3, respectively) depending on the seismograph and frequencies of the input.The largest errors occurred for input signals with frequencies in the low (<32 Hz) or high ranges (>125Hz), where the mechanical, electronics and digital parts of the seismograph modify the signals. Seismographs with the nominal transfer function described by DIN 45669:1:2010 are ranked with the smallest errors. Monitoring devices with transmissibility around one in a narrow bandwidth, in line with ISEE suggested criteria for amplitude response, involve large phase shifts at low and high frequencies, resulting in a worst performance."

"From November 2014 through September 2016, Westmoreland’s Coal Valley Mine utilized a Marion 7450 electric walking dragline to extract 1.2 million tonnes of a vertically-dipping, 52-meter wide, fault-thickened seam, beneath a conventionally-excavated pit bottom. Mine planning and operational hurdles encountered throughout a kilometer of mined strike length included mitigating highwall instability in both hanging and footwall slopes, water management, and end-of-life machine reliability and maintenance. The most substantial challenge has been the depressed global coal market. However, the successful application of this mining method significantly aided the overall cost of production at the site. The valuable experience gained from this project will be extended to future mining areas where this technique can be similarly applied. INTRODUCTION Coal Valley Mine is located approximately 220 kilometers southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Since commercial production began in 1978, more than 84 million clean tonnes of coal has been produced and sold domestically as well as exported overseas for power generation. While the existing processing plant has a nameplate capacity of 4 million tonnes per year, the site has operated at a 2 million tonne rate since 2015 due to depressed export markets. Westmoreland acquired the mine as part of its purchase of Sherritt Coal Operations in April 2014. The mine operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an IUOE workforce of 261. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The geology of the Yellowhead Tower mining area differs significantly from previous mining areas at Coal Valley. The Mynheer coal seam discussed herein consists of steeply dipping, highly-sheared, thrust-faulted, and heterogeneous coal pods. Deep set, southwest striking thrust faults were the likely mechanism for the podding and have resulted in overturned, rolled and highly sheared seams with zone thicknesses of up to 65 meters.The hanging wall is characterized by soft bentonitic mudstones and siltstones, overlain by massive competent sandstone. The footwall is defined by a hard volcanic tuff, interbedded with thin, sporadic coal seams. The sandstone above and volcanic tuff below constrained the faulting system within this zone, enabling the mass podding that has afforded the opportunity for large-scale mining."
