In operations that use the sublevel stoping mining method, production scheduling takes into account factors — including ore reserve envelopes, ore grade averages, equipment capacity, feed controls to the mill, and geotechnical restrictions — across the scheduling horizon. Mathematical programming is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the decision-making process in regard to the most viable production schedule in light of a given set of limitations. The majority of research on sublevel stope mining focuses primarily on a single objective of optimization, which is to maximize the net present value (NPV). Environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations are becoming more prevalent in the mining industry. This includes aspects relating to deforestation, land disturbances, gas emissions, community relations and water usage, among many others. Institutional and other kinds of investors are becoming more interested in the work that resource companies do regarding their ESG obligations. This review article identifies the gap in the existing literature and proposes to simultaneously optimize the production schedule around three objectives. Two of these relate directly to ESG aspects

"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. This paper describes an experimental method for the monitoring of diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a dead-ended drift for the purpose of assessing the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 105 ft. (32.0 mf long and slightly downsloping, with an average height and width of 8 ft. (2.4 m) and 28 ft. (8.5 m1 , respectively. The data were gathered for assessing these ventilation methods and for gathering data to support a computer model of the dispersion and mixing processes. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generated pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined. A comparison was also made between personal monitoring and area monitoring. Results of this analysis showed that in regions of high concentration gradients, it was not possible to get good agreement between point sampling and personal monitoring. In well-mixed areas, good agreement between the two methods of monitoring was obtained.

Introduction The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. Second, the classification system would allow the mining engineer to record falls routinely with little time and effort expended. This would encourage him to make observations concerning what type of roof support would work best in a given situation. Third, and probably most important, an adequate roof fall classification system is the first step toward developing a means of predicting the occurrence and extent of future falls. It was with these three reasons in mind that the following classification system was developed. The type of classification chosen reflects the background of the developer and the intended purposes of the system. Hylbert has proposed a geologic-based classification which groups falls as to structural and compositional origin. The need for similar systems is noted by Cox and by Ferm and Melton. Each of these researchers is confronted with a situation requiring a relationship between local geology and roof fall occurrence. Such a relationship would allow the prediction of the relative frequency of falls from a knowledge of local geologic features. The current research is aimed at fulfilling somewhat different requirements, as noted above. Fall geometry has been chosen as the basis of the classification system so fall type can be reported independent of local geological, environmental, and tectonic conditions. If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. "As the mining industry continues to face difficult challenges the need to persistently focus on productivity and utilization of labor and equipment costs will intensify. With these challenges in mind, Joy Global is helping to bring mining performance and analytics to the next level. By evaluating underground haulage, a significant component of the Room and Pillar mining value stream, variables have been identified and sensitivities have been performed to show opportunities to balance and streamline throughput. As a result of applying operational excellence tools to the mining environment, Joy Global is seeking to optimize mining performances by limiting waste, simplifying the process, increasing productivity and machine utilization, as well as removing workers from harm’s way. These days it’s not enough to work harder; mines have to work smarter. Improving efficiency, reducing costs, increasing safety: these are no longer ‘nice to haves’, they are ‘must haves’. Starting with the best products and the right people is a first step, but then what? How do mines take their operations from just OK to being a top performer? By using operational excellence principles aimed at eliminating waste, simplifying processes, automating where possible and removing people from harm’s way. The fundamentals of operational excellence (OpEx) are based upon the DMAIC process, which stands for define, measure, analyze, improve and control. DMAIC is an improvement cycle that helps with, for example, haulage optimization by: defining the issues and problems in the process as well as the areas of improvement; measuring and collecting mining operational data by time study and equipment monitoring system; analyzing through sensitivities and production modelling to determine root causes; then improving the performance and controlling the operation. Joy Global uses Joy OpEx or ‘lean’ principles inside its organization to drive efficiency, but it also helps its customers employ them to achieve new levels of productivity and safety. These same principles can be applied in most situations to streamline processes, improve operations and deliver value. As applied to mining, OpEx is seen as moving the needle on value creation by first identifying the value stream, then analyzing the areas that are not optimized. Once defined, these areas are ‘designed out’ of operational processes to create an automated operational flow. All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries, like France, Spain or Germany, are only forerunners of this development — their centuries of coal production have passed. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress in which ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can former mining regions sustainably progress to a better future? The steps Germany has taken to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process are described in this paper. 

"With up to 2,300 m (7,545 ft) of rock on top of it, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is scheduled to go into regular operation in December 2016 in the Swiss Alps, is not only the world’s longest, but also the deepest railway tunnel ever built. Accordingly, the temperatures in the tunnel are very high, with the surrounding rock expected to reach 45° C (113° F) once the tunnel is fully operational. Since unrestricted rail operations are only permitted in temperatures of 40° C (104° F) or less, the heat has to be controlled with suitable equipment. Large fans developed and built especially for this application by TLT-Turbo GmbH provide fresh air for regular operations as well as during maintenance and repair work. Separate fans ensure that the emergency exits are properly ventilated in case of fire. In addition to coming up with a technical solution that could handle the special challenges of this project, the engineers and planners had to develop detailed preliminary plans as well as a sophisticated logistics and installation concept.The Gotthard Base Tunnel consists of two 57-km (35-mile) long tubes, one in each direction. Including all connecting and access tunnels, the entire underground system measures 152 km (95 miles). At Faido and Sedrun, at approximately 16 and 36 km (9 and 23 miles) respectively, two multifunction stations were built that cut each of the two tubes into three sections of roughly equal length. Here, trains can make emergency stops and change tracks, if necessary. This is also where eight large axial fans made by TLT were installed that exchange the air, i.e. they extract a certain amount of heated air and inject the same amount of cool fresh air a few hundred meters further down the train tracks. In addition to the four exhaust and four supply fans, 24 so-called jet fans were installed along with associated components like silencers, shut-off dampers, drives and lubrication systems from TLT.In addition to exchanging the air, these fans are used to enable maintenance and repair operations in the tunnel. Current plans call for blocking each tunnel tube for one night per week in order to perform preventive maintenance work, thus enhancing the tunnel’s overall functionality and availability. During these hours, many people will be in the tunnel who require fresh air. “One of the major criteria for winning this bid was the fans’ ability to quickly switch between a wide-range of modes. TLT fans are among the best in the world in this regard,” said Andreas Kuhn, TLT’s project manager for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, about the selection of his company’s fans for this project."

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

"In a very real sense, Butte, MT is where the copper came from that won two world wars. The price for that unrestricted mining and smelting of copper came due in 1983 when Butte was declared a Superfund site.One of the most complex remnants of this mining history is the Parrot Tailings site. The Parrot smelter operated from 1881 to 1910, moving Upper Silver Bow Creek to the south and depositing approximately 283,000 m3 (370,000 cu yd) of waste material adjacent to Upper Silver Bow Creek. Additional mixed waste from other processing sites deposited below the Parrot tailings at the Northside Tailings, Diggings East and Blacktail Creek Berm total approximately 171,000 m3 (224,000 cu yd) of contaminated material. As part of the Superfund remedy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed leaving all these wastes in place. This proposal prompted a detailed criticism by several geoscientists familiar with the site. The EPA’s 2006 Record of Decision (ROD) did in fact leave these wastes in place, which set the stage for a series of studies that continue to refine how best to protect extensive completed Superfund Remediation downstream of Upper Silver Bow Creek. History of the Parrott Mine and tailingsPlacer gold was discovered in Silver Bow Creek, the headwaters of the Clark Fork River only a few miles from the Continental Divide in 1864. This discovery led to a stampede of placer and lode claims. One of the first lode claims located was the Parrot lode, located in the fall of 1864. Progress for developing a mine at the Parrott was slow, and it was not until 1876 that one of the original locators encountered a rich vein of chalcocite. Butte had its first copper mine.The Parrott Mine was patented in 1879 and by 1881 the Parrot, having lost a “t”, concentrator and smelter were built. The smelter and concentrator were an immediate success with a considerable market for processing the district’s rich copper ore. In 1885, the employees of the Parrot smelter bought the Butte Reduction Works, another smelter. In 1885, dams were built on Silver Bow Creek to contain various tailings and related processing byproducts (Fig. 1).By 1890, the various smelters in Butte rendered Butte’s air quality as suffocating (Fig. 2). An 1889 funeral procession was rumored to have gotten lost in the thick smelter smoke and somehow ended up at the Centennial Brewery. A city ordinance was passed late in 1890 in an attempt to control smoke. The Parrot smelter employed approximately 500 men by 1890. Through the 1890s, the tailings produced grew from approximately 91 t/d (100 stpd) to more than 181 t/d (200 stpd). Copper values in the tailings were initially as high as 4 percent, but as the processing improved that was reduced to 1.5 percent."

In order to best-discuss the met spar industry let me take the liberty to review our involvement, that is, my company's. Our organization has been involved in the fluorspar industry for approximately thirty-five years. We started our activity in Western Kentucky as a mining company and a beneficiator of spar, that is, grinding and grading. After a few short years, the mine became contaminated and rather than invest in a flotation plant, the property was sold and our spar activity was moved, primarily to Mexico. It was decided not to establish ourselves as a Mexican corporation, so, it was necessary to take the position of backer-financier of numerous mining operations. We served in this capacity for quite some time. We also built processing plants on the border in Texas, that is, sizing, grading, etc. in order to market into the steel industry. In 1957, generally speaking, fluorspar for the steel industry was purchased as gravel fluorspar with a maximum of 10% -1/16". The price of this material was $23.50 to $24.00 per ton f.o.b. railcar at the Rio Grande Crossings and about $26.00 or $26.25 f.o.b. barge, Brownsville, Texas. Usually the material was purchased on an effective basis. As you know, 2-1/2 times the silica total, subtracted from the total CaF2 gives the effective calcium fluoride. This was normally the extent of the chemical specifications. Consequently, material was shipped with no regard whatever, to anything other than effective units. The variations in material was absolutely unbelievable. In addition to this, quite frequently, cars were shipped, as they say in the industry, topped. This being, good material placed in the top of cars or barges over bad or low grade. The entire shipment may very well have met the effective unit spec, but the complete imbalance of the sub grade vs. the high grade more or less guaranteed that the consumer was probably using a great deal of low grade and therefore, his usage had to be way higher than it should have been. He came to the conclusion, that because of these conditions and the new technology developing in the steel industry, it was just a matter of time that the entire raw material industry would have to improve. Rather than spend our efforts directed to a substitute flux, we put together a sizing and grading plant in order to ship a controlled crude product, with independent laboratory analysis confirming size and quality. The age of control was started. We began shipping 70 to 72-1/2, 80 and 85 effective with sizing 1/2" by 2", 1" by 3", and 2" by 5" with absolute control on the amount of fines. A material with no fines was a premium product. Incidentally it sold for $24.50 -60 effective up to $28.50, $29.50 for 80 effective.

In push back design, a series of nested pits is generated and then considered as possible push backs with regard to the minimum push back width requirements. These nested pits are produced by parameterizing on one economic parameters like commodity price, mining or processing cost, stripping ratio etc. The most important characterization of these push backs is that the inner most push back has the highest value per ton, the second inner most push back has the second highest value per ton and so on. These nested pits are generated based on the best estimates of grade within a representation of the ore body in a three dimensional matrix form. Therefore, the inherent uncertainty associated with reserve estimation (for our discussion grade uncertainty) is not taken into account when push backs are designed. These methods do not attempt to establish which part of the deposit is likely to be worth most. This paper introduced a new algorithm that incorporates ore grade uncertainty during push back design process. The suggested strategy tries to seek to schedule risky blocks later in the extraction sequence.

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

It started' in 1936 when some Dutch adventurers wanted to scale the highest mountain in the South Pacific. Quite by accident, they discovered the Ertsberg, a contact deposit of magnetite laced with chalcopyrite, in a high mountain valley where it had been gouged at by glaciers and finally left as a solitary pillar for its discovery by a geologist who lent purpose to the expedition, Dr. J.J. Dozy. By the-.time a report was published describing the deposit, war had hit the Netherlands. Perhaps again by accident, the report was uncovered in 1959 by the East Borneo Company. At this point, Freeport entered the scene through its vice president for exploration, Forbes Wilson. During the course of a meeting on laterite prospects, the Ertsberg was introduced and he put the wheels into motion for Freeport to join in its exploration. You might, at this point, ask yourself whether you or your company would have taken on a venture to look at a reportedly large high grade copper outcrop in New Guinea, an unexplored land known best for its inhospitable climate, terrain and head-hunters. I heard the chief executive of one large mining company comment sometime back that neither he nor his company would have gotten involved. I won't attempt to describe the trials of the initial exploration expedition that passed through dense-man grove swamps, tropical jungle and across jagged mountains a distance of some 200 miles to get to the Ertsberg in 1960. It should be chronicled by its participants - Forbes Wilson, Del Flint, and John Bowenkamp. Needless to say, the participants relish the experience but wouldn't be among those volunteering for a return engagement. As a result, the Ertsberg changed from a reported outcrop to a mineral deposit containing an estimated 13 million tons with systematic surface sampling indicating a copper grade of over four percent. Moreover, the deposit extended to an indeterminate depth with the possibility of doubling or tripling. reserves well within reason.

During the late 1940's and early 1950?s, the Westinghouse Combustion Turbine Division built and demonstrated a residual oil-burning locomotive on six eastern railroads. Plans were made to convert to burning pulverized coal, and a single combustor was operated at a full-pressure condition in the laboratory for about two years. During the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, there was considerable interest in coal-burning MHD and a combustor was developed which would also be applicable to combustion turbines. In the early 19801s, the BCR National Laboratory (BCRNL) became affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and a program was begun, supported by the Stare of Pennsylvania, to develop an all-purpose combustor for use with industrial and utility boilers and eventually with combustion turbines. In this paper, we review the work of almost 40 years, indicate our present position, and propose steps to be taken leading to efficient and environmentally acceptable power generation from coal, and specifically to coal-burning locomotives.

The current emphasis on environmental problems has focused attention on the massive nationwide accumulations of mine, mill, and smelter wastes that represent potential air and water pollution hazards. The pollution hazards can be reduced or eliminated by utilization or stabilization of these wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, since the inception of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, has been conducting research to determine the practicality of various utilization and stabilization procedures. Investigations include partial extractions of desirable waste components and full utilization of the wastes as simulated soils or in ceramic or other structural products. Chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative methods of stabilization have been actively studied. This report updates information previously developed by the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center and presents the current status of antipollution solid waste work 1/,2/.
