The high copper grade in the Igarapé Bahia (Brazil) gold-copper ore restricts the direct application of the classical cyanidation process. Copper oxide and sulfide minerals react with cyanides in solution, causing high leach-reagent consumption, raising processing costs and decreasing gold recovery. According to studies, a feasible solution would be to pretreat the ore to remove copper minerals prior to cyanidation. The goal of this experimental work was to study the conditions for the removal of copper from the Igarapé Bahia gold-copper ore by sulfuric acid leaching, applying a statistical approach to the experimental design. By using the Plackett Burman method, it was possible to select the variables that exhibited the largest influence on copper extraction at the sulfuric acid leaching stage. These variables were leach solution temperature, stirring speed, sulfuric acid concentration in the leach solution and ore particle size. The individual effect of these variables and their interaction influences on the experimental response were analyzed by applying the replicated full-factorial design method. Finally, the selected variables were optimized by the ascending-path statistical method, which determined the best leach experimental conditions for maximum copper extraction. Their presentation will be on gainsharing. WALTER COOK: How many of you have gainsharing plans in place currently at your location? [show of hands] A considerable number-more than about half the room. Of those plans, how many of them do you consider as meeting your needs and being successful? [show of hands, far fewer, general audience laughter] You have all at least heard the word "gainsharing." Some of you undoubtedly aren't quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. In the short time I have now I'll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. Because of its pronounced tendency to undergo visco-plastic flow, coal ground in the energy- efficient high-pressure roll mill invariably comes out as a briquetted product which must be disintegrated in a conventional type of grinding device such as the ball mill. The aggregates comprise comminuted coal particles that are apparently extensively cracked and weakened during passage of the coal through the high-pressure rolls. Their deaggregation in a ball mill in the second stage is accompanied by further grinding of the coal with a relatively small expenditure of energy. Thus in spite of energy dissipation in briquetting in the roll mill and in disintegrating the briquettes in the ball mill, significant energy savings are possible in the fine grinding of coal in a two-stage serial grinding mode, as compared to ball mill grinding alone. It has been determined that for the best results the energy invested in the two grinding stages must be apportioned in an optimal manner, the energy consumption in the ball milling step is comparable to, even in excess of, the energy spent in the high- pressure roll mill; and 20 to 50 percent energy savings might be possible in grinding coal to minus 200-mesh size by this two-step process, as compared to conventional milling.

The solving of complex metallurgical flowsheet calculations by hand is, at best, a tedious job which often proves that engineers, too, make mistakes. The high cost and long lead time associated with manual flowsheet solutions have led several organizations involved in research, development and construction of extractive metallurgical processes to search for computerized systems which will solve flowsheet calculations. Although design flowsheet programs have been developed by the chemical industry, the ability to solve flowsheets involving particulate solids is usually overlooked. A new computer applications system has been developed at Fluor Mining and Metals which has been designed to accommodate the type of design flowsheets required by the minerals industry. By employing the sequential modular computation technique, a library of metallurgical pro- cessing routines may' be accumulated which are used by a universal executive system. This technique enables rapid solution of new process) .flow- sheets with only a minimum of additional programming effort. The implementation of the FLEXMET flowsheet solution system is the subject of this paper. Some of the major features of the system which are examined include interactive input data handling, automated flowsheet calculation order arrangement, flexible accomodation of unit operations models and advanced management of recycle and specification control calculations.

The Northside Storage Tunnel Project in Sydney includes over 20 km of TBM driven tunnels, over three km of declines and major caverns and pump rooms. The paper describes methods used for design on the project. Emphasis is given to the refinement of the use of empirical rock mass classifications, and to the use of discontinuum numerical methods. The use of empirical rock mass classifications in Sydney sandstone has usually led to conservative design because the systems are based on a random orientation of joints in the rockmass. Because the joint sets are usually oriented in a way that is beneficial for tunnelling, limits must be placed on the parameters used in the classifications system. The paper discusses these limits and the derivation of the parameters. The use of numerical methods in Sydney sandstone is discussed. Continuum methods have their uses, but discontinuum methods are preferred. The use of UDEC has been validated against a previous project, the New Southern Railway. Recommendations are given for UDEC models. In Sydney's geology, so advantageous for tunnelling, the challenges of this project have been to make the best use of the good conditions, while maintaining safety for the workforce and the future operators of the project.

The mining industry is presently one of the most heavily capitalized industries in the U.S. (U.S. - Statistical Abstracts, 1979). U.S. sales of new mining equipment (not including environmental, preparation, or long distance transportation equipment) are projected to reach approximately $5 billion/year in 1980 (Frost and Sullivan, 1979). Of these new equipment sales approximately 30 to 40 percent of this equipment will be used to replace old equipment. Therefore, an increase of efficiency in the use of equipment replacement capital could have substantially positive effects for the U.S. mining industry. This is very critical in these times of restricted capital availability, double digit inflation, burdensome governmental regulation, and rising foreign competition in the mining industry. This paper examines the numerous factors that constitute the typical mine equipment replacement problem. A computerized, mathematical model is formulated to utilize historic cost and production information to predict equipment cost versus age for the existing and potential replacement machines. Another part of this computerized model determines the best equipment replacement strategy that accomplishes estimated production goals at a minimum discounted cost. This computerized model is an easily used, consistent method of determining the optimum replacement age for any equipment unit or fleet of equipment at a mining operation.

Almost all persons connected with mining industry have had an exasperating experience like the following: 'On a cold and frosty morning in mid-January, you find yourself quite happy with the world. Production is up and the mine has been running smoothly. All at once the radio cracks up your tranquility -- 'so and so' piece of equip¬ment has broken its 'whatzit'. Now the iron is in the fire, and things have to be fixed quick.!' This can be a major failure which will bring the whole operation to a grinding halt or just one of the numerous maintenance headaches on an auxiliary piece of equipment. After one has experienced a major or minor catastrophe, he has to wonder whether some other methods with respect to design and maintenance would help prevent these unexpected calamities. The objective of this paper is to gain an insight into the charac¬teristics of steel at cold temperatures so that better decisions can be made with respect to maintenance and repair of mining equipment. Most machinery and their structures are exposed to cold temperatures. Even in locations as far south as Alabama and Arizona, brief periods of cold in winter months can adversely affect the ability of mach¬ines to do their work. To understand the background of cold temperature brittle fracture, jet us examine its basic elements. First, when steel gets cold, it gets brittle. This is best described by Figure 1. The control systems engineer is often faced with the problem of designing tests or experiments where the cost of obtaining information is expensive. This is true in aerospace as well as in process industries. In these situations the details of test design should be carefully evaluated before any test is executed so that the maximum amount of information is obtained for the effort expended. In recent years there has been a steady trend towards increased automation, In the process industries this has resulted in extensive review of process variables and, instrumentation techniques, development of more accurate system mathematical models, and extensive investments in complex control system as well as completely automated plants. When planning and developing these systems, where each measure of a process variable is usually expensive, it behooves the design engineer to give considerable thought to the details of test design before instrumentation is procured and installed so that the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the expense incurred.

We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.

"Everyone has a general idea what mixing means, but describing the mixing process is not so simple. The objective of any mixing process is to distribute and blend the materials with different characteristics, different quantities as evenly as possible resulting in a homogenous mixture. Introducing proportional movement with the optimal intensity into the materials achieves effective homogeneous mixing results. A simple one directional movement with inadequate acceleration of the materials would obviously not achieve the same mixing results. This would be more like stirring than mixing. The amount of relative movement that is introduced is a decisive factor. Circumstances for successful mixing involve distribution of all materials, and achieving the highest probability that all recipe particles located in a specific position at the beginning can be found at any random location in the mixing chamber at the end of the process. This is the only way to ensure that a consistent result is achieved every time mixing is repeated.THREE-PART CYCLE The mixing cycle occurs in three phases; charging the mixer, the mixing process, and discharging. The sequence in which the individual materials to be mixed are filled into the mixer can have a huge impact on the efficiency of the mixing cycle. The mixing cycle overlaps the charging process and the discharge cycle follows the mixing cycle. To achieve optimum results, effective discharging methods should be taken into consideration to avoid risks of segregation. Costs for energy and wear should be as low as possible and finally, it is very important that the mixing cycle takes place as quickly as possible. In concrete or paste backfill production, selecting the best mixing technology is crucial for both the quality of the final product to be blended and the efficiency of the production process. The optimum mixing system is one that rapidly disperses all ingredients evenly throughout the mixing trough and completely surrounds all the course or fine aggregate particles with the slurry cement particles. Specific for paste production it’s the mixers job to also break-down unconditioned tailings to achieve consistent paste viscosity or measured spread. Many paste and concrete formulas also involve small quantities of chemical additives which also must be evenly distributed effectively. The time required per mixing cycle as well as the costs of energy, wear and maintenance will determine the economy of the concrete production."

"On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."

A combination field and office study of mining districts in Southwestern U.S.A., conducted in 1949 - 1950 by United Geophysical Company, embraced all of the essentials for a successful exploration project including factors such as geology water, transportation and many more. Perhaps the best known of several high priority areas chosen from the study was the Twin Buttes or Pima District in Arizona, however, the Turquoise District also ranked very high on this priority schedule. Following the discovery of the Pima Mine in 1951 and 1952, United initiated additional preliminary geological, geophysical, drilling and claim location work in the Turquoise District, but stopped shortly thereafter, when ASARCO began adjoining competetive activity. During the summer of 1957, sometime after ASARCO abandoned their claims in the area, Minerals Exploration Company began intensive exploration in the Courtland-Gleeson part of the District. This program was terminated in 1958. Later Bear Creek Mining Company supplemented the discovery endeavor with their own program during the period 1960 through 1962. This paper summarizes most of the geophysical work done by all of the groups except ASARCO and is intended to complement the recent paper "General Geology and Some Structural Features of the Courtland-Gleeson Area, Cochise County, Arizona" by Mr. Otis McRae of Bear Creek Mining Company.

Many minerals float best with fatty acids in the intermediate pH range. For example, fluorite, a semi soluble salt mineral, exhibits a maximum contact angle and a maximum flotation recovery in the pH range of 6-8 after conditioning in a palmitate solution (fig. 1). The maximum in flotation coincides roughly, as many researchers have observed, with the boundary of bulk precipitation of the fatty acid. According to fig. Z this boundary is in the above case of 5xl0-7 M palmitate approximately at pH 6.3. For assessing the phenomena occurring at the bulk precipitation boundary of fatty acids, the surface tensions of carboxylate solutions have been measured under various conditions. Fig. 3 shows the surface tension development of palmitate and myristate solutions of increasing concentration at pH 12. Also shown are the bulk precipitation edges (BPE) of the respective solid species that is stable under these conditions, that is the potassium acid soap, HKAZ. Both curves display a similar behavior. As the concentration of carboxylat,e increases, the surface tension decreases, until a minimum is reached at which the curves level off. The decrease of surface tension with increasing carboxylate concentration is generally taken to indicate the surface excess of the carboxylate ion. The point where the curve suddenly levels off has not yet been explained. While it is well known that the onset of micellization (CMC) may cause such an inflexion of the surface tension curve, this cannot be the case here because the position of this point depends, as shown in fig. 4 for palmitate, on pH (the CMC is generally independent of pH). We believe that this point indicates the precipitation of a colloidal acid soap (colloidal precipitation edge, CPE) before the bulk precipitation of this species sets in (BPE).

There is one quick way to substantially reduce the operating cost of a great many pining operations. It is to cut the demand charge on the use of electricity and gas. Demand charge is the utility company's charge for the maximum rate of energy usage which is in addition to the charge for the total amount of energy used. Energy demand is reduced by prohibiting simultaneous operation of devices, especially those that consume large amounts of energy, or by deferring the use of such equipment as air conditioners from one demand period to a subsequent period. To achieve that end, a control system can continuously measure the demand and turn off selected loads in accordance with established rules. Because of the complexity of most industrial plants, a computer is the best means of storing, measuring, calculating, and controlling the many variables associated with the many devices involved. A computer system for that use has been developed by the Westinghouse Computer and Instrumentation Division in Orlando, Florida. For most applications, this demand control system can be installed and operated by industrial plant engineering personnel with no special knowledge of computer technology. It can be used with both electrical and gas service. For clarity, let us examine electrical demand first.

The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

The present fuel situation indicates that, at least for the next 20 to 30 years, the burning of coal will be a main source of energy. All coal contains sulfur, which is converted to sulfur dioxide during combustion. The concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the resulting flue gas, for most coals, would exceed the limits established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Therefore, the sulfur must either be removed from the coal prior to its burning, or be collected from the stack gas before it reaches the atmosphere. There is currently a large amount of research devoted to methods of removing the sulfur from the coal before burning, or during combustion in fluidized beds with materials which trap the sulfur in the solid residue. The commercialization of these processes, however, is not expected in the near future. Flue gas desulfurization appears to be the best near term prospect of fulfilling current air quality control regulations. The lime/limestone wet-scrubbing methods are the most advanced flue gas desulfurization processes and will account for the majority of sulfur removal systems in electric power generation. There are currently at least 23 full-scale systems existing or under construction and 17 of these will use the lime or limestone wet-scrubbing process. (1)

Automatic tripper control systems can be reliable and as such are suitable for use in the mining industry. Proper application of fundamental engineering principles provides the means for the reliability. Some of the principles are: (1) Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done; (2) Use sound logic design practices to avoid internal electrical problems; (3) The design must be maintenance oriented; and (4) Use good quality components. I would like to discuss a tripper control installation at Kennecott Copper Corporation, Chino Mines Division, in Hurley, New Mexico, and how these principles apply to this tripper control system. First, however, I will expand on the principles to clarify just what is meant. First, "Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done.? Operator acceptance is often the key to the success or failure of an automatic control system. One of the best ways I know of to get operator acceptance is to give him a system that he wants. I don't mean to imply that if bad practices or procedures exist that they should be incorporated in the control system. I do think that many designers feel they haven't done their job if the control system doesn't do things drastically different than the old manual method. Good engineering principles dictate that the job should be done right and if the manual method was right it can very likely be right for the automatic method.
