Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations were conducted on talc-bearing samples from Arkansas and Texas under the Bureau of Mines program of examinations and surveys, which is concerned, in part, with the improvement of conservation and utilization of domestic mineral resources. Two of the soapstones in question were successfully upgraded by flotation, utilizing stage additions of a frother and an amine to promote their talc content. The process could enable the producers to meet more rigid specifications of higher priced talc commodities. INTRODUCTION Talc is an industrial mineral with distinctive properties, such as softness, smoothness, large surface area in relation to mass, chemical inertness, and good retention as a filler, that make it particularly valuable to a number of industries. Sales to 6 industries -ceramics, paint, insecticide, rubber, roofing, and paper -consumed 84 percent of the domestic production of talc, pyrophyllite, and ground soapstone in 1952. Mine production in that year totaled 600,908 tons. Sales of crude and ground material were 593,147 tons valued at $11,347,317.2/

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSince its introduction into coal mines, the use of Airdox has grown in popularity, especially in the Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Its use permits breaking dawn coal on shift, whereas the use of explosives for blasting coal on shift is prohibited by law in those States. Many of the hazards connected with the use of explosives are eliminated. The accident experience in the use of Airdox has been excellent with respect to the number of fatalities or serious injuries per million tons mined.The Federal Mine Safety Code specifies that Airdox lines should be grounded at the compressor and at other points of low resistance along the lines but should not be connected to tracks, pipe lines, or other possible power conductors. Heat content measurements were conducted for GaPo.996 and InPo.986 over the temperature range from 298° to 1,100° K, and for In2S2.897 over the range from 298° to 1,200° K. Both the actual experimental data and values adjusted to conform with the stoichiometric compositions (GaP, InP, and In2S3) were reported. Entropy increments above 298.15° K were calculated for the stoichiometric compounds, and heat content and heat capacity equations were derived.

Although overall worker productivity for U.S. underground coal mines is available, productivity by mining method and seam thickness is not. Mining technology has gone through dramatic changes in the past decade, and the industry has experienced a lack of accurate productivity Figures addressing these changes. This information is of great interest in planning for future mining systems as thick and shallow coal seams currently being mined are depleted and exploitation of thinner, deeper, and better quality seams is considered to partially meet the requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. In a cooperative program, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained raw mine level production and related data from U.S. Energy Information Administration for 1989 and 1990 and performed the needed statistical analysis. Base criteria, parameters, and salient results of the mine productivity analysis are presented in this report.

A survey of the literature eras made covering the use of aqueous non-aqueous, and fused-welt systems for the electrowinning or electroplating of molybdenum metal. The survey was prepared in order to provide background for further investigations directed toward the electrodeposition of pure molybdenum metal from either aqueous or nonaqueous mediums. While a thorough effort was made to cover all available references, a critical review was not attempted nor does this survey pretend to be exhaustive in nature.

"The author was a member of a Commission sent by the Secretary of the Interior to France to investigate developments in mining and metallurgy under stress of war conditions, and also to observe the extent and character of the destruction of the collieries and the steel and iron plants, and methods which were being taken to reestablish them. This commission consisted of F. G. Cottrell, Chief Metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, Frank H. Probert, Dean of the University of California Mining School, and George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau. While conducting this investigation a trip was made to the Saar Basin to observe the conditions there. Following this Mr. Rice acted as advisor on mining matters to the Representative of the Economic Council in an Interallied conference held at Cologne in April 1919, and subsequently visited the mining districts in central and southern France, Belgium, and Great Britain.The Germans, in planning a campaign for world supremacy, had as one of their first objectives the seizing of the important Briey iron ore deposits of France and the coal fields of Belgium and northern France.Large resources of coal and iron have led to the commercial greatness of the countries possessing them, as exemplified by the great development first in England then in the United States, and in Germany when the minette high phosphorus iron ores became useful through the invention of the Thomas and Gilchrist dephosphorizing process in 1878. However, this development was anticipated by the German scientific advisors in 1871, and led to the then known deposit of minette ore in Lorraine being taken from France by Germany.When these ores became available, Germany made such tremendous strides that its minette ore developments were not sufficient and importation of ore was necessary. Meantime France, by drilling, had established the extension of the minette ore field into French Lorraine. Then it was discovered that France had greater resources, while the German resources were being rapidly depleted.Although Germany, in its Westphalian basin, possessed the most important coal field on the Continent, containing the largest resources in coking coal outside of Great Britain, its coal was distant from the sea coast, so it could not be an important factor in the export business. No doubt this fact caused the German Imperialists to look forward: to securing the coal basin of Belgium and northern France for future ocean trade.It was a striking feature in the German conduct of the war that, although the steel and iron plants of Belgium and France and other industrial establishments in the invaded regions of Belgium and France were utterly destroyed, the iron mines in French Lorraine were not destroyed nor materially damaged by the Germans in their retreat, while the destruction in France continued until the day of the Armistice. The other striking fact is that the coal mines Of Belgium were not destroyed. It can only be conjectured whether this was due to President Wilson's threat of retribution, which did not stay their hand in France, or was due to the fact that they did not consider Belgium as a real competitor. It was evident they wished to cripple France industrially when they could not hold these northern provinces."

"During the past year, the Pittsburgh experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods for the quantitative estimation of carbon monoxide in blood. This work was necessary because reliable methods of analysis are of the greatest importance in the bureau's research work on prevention and treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning among workers in mines and metallurgical plants. Two of the methods considered involve color comparisons. In one of these methods, differences in tint can be noted fairly readily, while in the other, they are much more difficult to detect. The latter, however, is otherwise considerably simpler. It was decided, therefore, in studying the possibilities of this second method, to use the most sensitive eyes in the laboratory force.Preliminary trials.The method under investigation was the Haldane carmine determination of carbon monoxide in blood. The plain oxyhamoglobin of the blood in dilute solution is a pale straw color, when exposed to carbon monoxide it becomes a cherry pink. In the analysis dilute indigo carmine is added to oxyhsmoglobin until the solution matches in tint the carbon monoxide hemoglobin. The eye wanted, then, was the one most sensitive to faint pinks. But just how to select the analyst was not clear At first the Williams test scale, used in the Navy, was considered, but on con¬sultation with Dr. L. L. Thurston, bead of the Department of Psychology at Carnegie Institute of Technology, the following procedure was adopted.Instead of standard tests made up of all colors, only those occurring in the analysis were used. Solutions were prepared of the two hemoglobins, from which twenty-four different pairs were made up and placed in test tubes like those expected to be used in the analysis. One of each pair differed from the other in percentage of carbon monoxide hemoglobin by amounts varying from 2-1/2 per cent to 20 per cent. Each pair was compared in a box built in our own shop. This was 20 inches long and 5 inches square in cross section. One end was covered with ground glass. Just inside this glass cover were provided two slots, each the width of the test tubes used. The tubes to be compared were dropped into these slots through two holes in the top of the box. The device was placed before a window away from the sun, and so arranged that the light conditions were the same on each slit or opening. The person to be tested was seated before the box, and as the two tubes were placed before him side by side, he marked whether A (left) or B (right) contained the more cherry pink. This procedure was continued till he had compared all the pairs."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a damage-resistant brattice, intended for use as a stopping in locations where blast damage to stoppings is a problem, the roof is relatively flat, and the differential pressure across the stopping is not high. Damage-resistant brattices consist of a series of vertically hung brattice panels joined to each other by Velcro connections that improve the airtightness of the brattice. When the brattice is subjected to strong blast forces, the Velcro connections peel apart, allowing the panels to open without incurring damage. The Velcro connections can then be resealed in a matter of minutes. A preliminary test in the Bureau's Safety Research Mine and subsequent long-term testing at the White Pine copper mine in Michigan and the Retsof salt mine in New York show that damage-resistant brattices withstand blasting better than conventional stoppings, while still performing as efficient air barriers when the Velcro connections are sealed.

The Bureau of Mines beneficiated the wastes generated by commercial titanium chlorination operations to reclaim metal values and reduce the problem of disposing of solid wastes. A water leach solubilized about 40 percent of the dry weight and over 75 percent of the metallic impurities. The residue from the water leach was rich in titanium dioxide and carbon; it was combined with rutile and recycled to a laboratory chlorinator. The contained carbon was used in lieu of part of the coke requirement.

An improved method for preparing gravimetric standard gas mixtures of helium-4 in nitrogen has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A single-pan 12-kg analytical balance that has a sensitivity of 3 mg is used to prepare the mixture. The balance will accommodate a cylinder having a volume of approximately 4 L that weighs approximately 5 kg. The method has been improved to a precision of ±O.04 pct by performing four successive dilutions, by improved handling of gases in the manifold, and by using an improved analytical method to select high-purity gases.

The Stayton Mining District in San Benito County, Calif., near Hollister, includes several square miles with many occurrences of antimony ore. The sample submitted for the test described in this paper came from a vein said to have been traced and sampled for 5,000 feet on the surface, 1,500 feet carrying 2-1/2 to 3 percent antimony and the remainder 1/2 to 2 percent. Thirty thousand tons 'With a content of 3 percent antimony are said to be blocked out. A drift of 200 feet on the vein has shown ore containing 4.2 percent antimony. The present sample assayed 3.8 percent. Previous flotation investigation of this are resulted in a recovery of only 71.6 percent in concentrates containing 56.8 percent Sb. It was desired to develop a method of treatment that would give better results. The antimony in the sample occurred as the mineral stibnite, Sb2S3, antimony sulfide.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations by the Alaska Mining Experiment Station, Juneau, to determine the practicability of treating cinnabar-stibnite ore by bulk flotation and controlled-atmosphere roasting of the concentrate. Ore from the Red Devil mine near Sleetmute, Alaska, was selected for testing; it is typical of ores widely distributed throughout the Kuskokwim River Basin. The material, consisting of stibnite and cinnabar in ankerite, dolomite, and quartz, assayed 1.55 percent Hg and 2.87 percent Sb. Continuous treatment of the ore in a laboratory flotation circuit recovered 95.7 percent of the mercury and 82.6 percent of the antimony in a concentrate that assayed 20.4 percent Hg and 34.6 percent Sb.

"Oil-shale camps are peculiarly favored, in that before they are establishes it can be ascertained with a degree of certainty, that the life of the project is not limited. Unlike camps at metal mines, where the metal content of a given area is frequently an unknown quantity until after years of development, oil-shale camps should, from the outset, be planned and. built as permanent types of camps. Where this procedure is followed camps will be established which better serve the needs of the industry and the cost of their general care and upkeep will be less.Selection of camp or townsite.The site of the camp or town' whether on company property or not, should be selected with care. It should be separate if possible from the location of the plants of the company so as to be free from noise and fumes and so as to provide a change of environment for employees in going from their work to their homes.The principal features governing the site to be selected are as follows:Drainage. The general contour of the surrounding country should be such that drainage is away from the site. The camp or town should, if practical, be situated on higher ground than that in its immediate vicinity.Soil. The nature of the soil on which the camp or town is located may bear a decided relation to health. A porous, well underdrained top soil of at least four feet in depth insures dryness and facilities the placing of foundations and the laying of water mains and sewer pipes. Such a soil also is an advantage in growing trees, shrubs and grass plots, which are a decided adjunct to making the community attractive.Enviroment. The contiguous territory should afford no unwholesome sur¬roundings such as swamps Or accumulations of stagnant water.General Considerations. The water supply to be provided and the method of disposal of wastes influence to a certain extent the location of the camp or town-site. The means of supplying water, whether by gravity or by pupping, and the disposal of sewage, whether by outfall, system, sewage disposal system through septic tanks, broad irrigation or filter beds, or cesspools will govern the location of the site topographically in relation to source of water and point of disposal of sewage.* This article was prepared as part of the paper ""Use and Supply of Water for the Oil-Shale Industry"" by J. Since the organization of the Federal Bureau of Mines, part of the duties of the field men of the Safety Division has been to teach those connected with the minerals industries how to render the proper assistance to an injured worker between the time of the accident and the time when the injured receives medical attention--in other words, "first aid to the injured." For a number of years after the training was introduced, the response of mine officials and workers was very slow. Many times Bureau instructors devoted at least a week to training 5 to 15 or a few more men. However, in recent years since the companies and the Bureau of Mines have had an opportunity to study the results of first aid training, it has been found that in addition to taking care of an injured worker after an accident and thereby greatly reducing the severity rate, the tendency is for the majority of those who take the training to be more careful in their work, or to be more "safety conscious."

Compressed- air blowers are frequently used both in large and small metal ines , not only as an aid to ventilation , but in some mines as a substitute for an dequate ventilation system . As a temporary fixture , blowers have their uses , but hey should never be used in lieu of a permanent ventilation system. A number Probably the most common error made in placing dependence on compressed- air lowers as an aid to underground ventilation is the tendency to over- rate their cooling efficiency . It is a very common but natural error to assume that compressed air which issues freely from a blower is of the same temperature as the compressed air which issues freely from the exhaust port of a rock-drilling machine . of readings were taken in different mines of the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust , of the compressed air flowing from the blowers , and of the surrounding air In both cases . In general , the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust was from 10 to 30 degrees below that of the surrounding air , in many instances being slightly below freezing , 32° F . The average temperature for a number of compressed-air lowers and for the mine air surrounding them is shown in Table I.

Poisonous hydrocyanic acid gas (HCN) is sometimes evolved in dangerous quantities from cyanides used in metallurgical and chemical operations. This gas is much used for fumigating buildings, ships, greenhouses, and such commodities as grain and cotton to destroy rats, mice and insect pests. Wherever cyanide fumes are evolved, thorough ventilation is necessary in order to render the sur- rounding air safe to breathe. Many persons have been killed by entering tanks and fumigated places too soon, and a simple test for this gas would promote safety. In view of the need for an easy method for quantitatively determining HCN in air, the three color reactions used originally for testing HCN in solution tions *** were modified and adapted. The reactions employ (1) picric acid (CH(NO2)3OH) which is yellow but combines with hydrogen cyanide to form a red- purple dye, isopurpuric acid****; (2) phenolphthalin (CH1604), which is a reduc- tian product of the phenolphthalein (CH4) used for acid indicator, this colorless substance is oxidized***** by presence of HCN to pink colored phenolph- thalin; and (3) guaiacum which oxidized from colorless to blue******. Phenolph- thalin and guaiacum require the presence of copper compounds which catalize the color formation by reduction of cupric cyanide. The United States Bureau of Mines has within its ranks a group of engi- neers who are engaged in working out quarry problems, the solution of which will be of general benefit to the industries involved. The problems undertaken are approached in a systematic and thorough manner, all the evidence for and against any proposed change or new development being collected as carefully as an attor- ney would prepare his data on an important case. Unlike the attorney, however, the Bureau engineer does not take sides; his judgment is based entirely and in- partially on the array of facts presented. In order to gain the desired infor- mation he visits many plants, consults with the leaders in the industry, works out experiments in his laboratory, and supplements this information with a stu- dy of all available literature already published on the subject in any part of the world. As an engineer who has for eight years conducted such inquiries in the stone industry, I propose to discuss the Bureau of Mines viewpoint; and it may be of interest to consider with me in a brief and general way the engineer's method of looking at quarry problems, and some of the results attained through past and present labors. While the Bureau has conducted no investigation directly for the crushed- st one industries, two years of investigative work at cement-plant quarries, and work now being conducted at lire-plant quarries, has a very direct bearing on the problems of the crushed-stone industry, since stripping, drilling, blasting, loading, and transportation are similar in many respects in all stone quarries. The results of cement-plant quarry investigations are to be found in Bureau of Mines Bulletin #160. (b) Two short papers on lime-plant quarry problems have been issued in mimeographed form as Serial #01 (c) and Serial 3 (d).

"The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and· approved February 25, 1913, made it the province, and duty of the Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate· information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue of the Bureau of Mines List of Publications and Articles describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1990, to December 31,1991.
