A series of experiments were carried out in an effort to develop a universally applicable mathematical model of the hydrocyclone classifier. The design and operating variables studied were: cyclone diameter and height, the inlet, vortex finder and apex diameters, the feed pressure and the solids content of the feed slurry. The model consists of four basic equations which express the cut size ( dso), volumetric split between overflow and underflow, volumetric throughput, and sharpness of separation in terms of the operating and design variables. Although empirical, the model is nevertheless in general agreement with fundamentally derived models. The model clearly 1•eveals the effect of the major variables on the operation of a hydrocyclone. Because of its broad data base and the inclusion of all the major variables, the model may be used without experimental data to predict the operation of cyclones over a wide range of different operating conditions. With operating data, the equations may be modified to serve as an operational model.

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber plant was recently completed at an existing facility, in order to treat the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns. Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong operational readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.INTRODUCTIONCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Quebec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.The CDS ProcessA general overview of the CDS process is presented in Figure 1 below. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary byproductof the process.Fresh hydrated lime and CDS residue is captured by the dust collection system and is re-circulated to the CDS via a fluidised transport system. Clean off-gas passes through the dust-collection system and is then sent to the atmosphere by a single exhaust fan.The CDS residue purged from the system is combined with the dust collected from the kiln offgas system and this mixture is wetted in the already exiting agglomeration system, to minimize dust generation during handling, and then sent to disposal."

Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

"IntroductionThe Maurice Bay deposit is one of a number of uranium deposits that have been found in recent years in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan (Tremblay, 1982). This deposit, along with the others, belongs to the unconformity type deposits (Beck, 1977). They are, for the most part, polymetallic, being characterized by a suite of metals which include U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, V, Ag, Au, Pt-group elements, S, As, Bi, Se, Te, and Mo, some of which, besides U, are present in economic concentrations (Amok, 1974; Ruzicka, 1975; Tapaninen, 1976; Hoeve and Sibbald, 1978; Dahlkamp, 1978). The Maurice Bay deposit was known to be a small low grade deposit in which the ore was essentially monomineralic, consisting mainly of pitchblende (Harper, 1978). However, the occurrence of trace amounts of some of the elements common in the larger polymetallic ore bodies (e.g. Key Lake, Cluff Lake D) was anticipated. Thus a lithogeochemical sampling project was undertaken in 1979 across part of the Maurice Bay deposit (Harper, 1979). Major oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Na2O, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2) and a group of the most common trace metals (U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, As, Au, V, and Se) were analyzed to determine whether any elemental patterns (halos or depletions) could be detected which would reduce the number of pathfinder elements needed for exploration purposes. In addition to the above metals, Th was also checked because some conglomerate strata in the Maurice Bay area are known to be thorium-enriched (Harper, 1978). Only the trace metal distributions will be discussed in detail in this report.General GeologyThe Maurice Bay area is underlain by three major groups of rocks, the White Lake metamorphic complex, an unnamed granodiorite complex, and the Athabasca Group, described previously (Fig. 1; Harper, 1979). Table 1 summarizes the stratigraphic features as deduced by geological mapping and the examination of drill cores."

The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. "IntroductionAS COMPARED with coal mines in the United States, and even with some of those in eastern Canada, the coal mines of western Canada, generally speaking, :have made little progress toward mechanization at the working faces. So far as Vancouver island is concerned, there are three main reasons for this : ( 1 ) in some areas, conditions• easy for hand-loading but unsuitable for mechanical loading make high outputs per man •possible by the former method; (2) faulting of the coal seams in ..some areas precludes long-term planning and the introduction and efficient use of expensive equipment; (3) thinness •and other characteristics of the seams in many areas favour hand-loading.No. 8 MINENo. 8 mine of Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir), Limited, is located in the Cumberland sub-area of the Comox coalfield on Vancouver island about 90 miles west-northwest of Vancouver. The geological structure of this coalfield has been described by J. D. McKenzie. The seams occur in the Comox formation, a subdivision of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group. The formation is of near-shore origin and was laid down on an irregular surface of' older rocks. The irregular generally have a northeasterly dip, modified by gentile folds and by a •few large, and a number of smaller, faults.Four seams have been worked in the Cumberland area and all vary in thickness and in the amount and number of interstratified bone and rock •bands."

Measurements of the settling rates and the rheological behaviour of heavy media formed of fine suspensions in water of each of magnetite, ferrosilicon, and galena have been made. For media ranging from 1.6 to 2.8 specific gravity the settling measurements gave initial settling rates of from 0.5 to 0.01 ?cm. 'Per minute for magnetite; from 4.0 to 0.8 cm. per minute for galena; and from 35 to 1.6 cm. 'Per minute for ferrosilicon. These measurements indicate the ?relative stability of the suspensions and should be helpful in establishing the useful specific gravity range for each medium. Measurements of the consistency of the media were made with a Fann Model 35 rotational viscometer. Aibnormal or non-Newtonian behaviour was observed in the case of each media, the apparent viscosity being dependent upon the rate of shear or the intensity of motion. Measurements were made over the rate of shear range of 10? to 1,000 reciprocal seconds. The apparent viscosities of the magnetite media ranged from 450 down to 4?0 centipoise at 2.30 specific gravity, and from 2,450 down to 700 centipoise at 2.80 specific gravity. In the case of the galena media, the variation was from 40, through a minimum of 6, to 10 centipoise at 2.20 specific gravity, and from 950, through a minimum of 180, to 450 centipoise at 3.6 specific gravity. The ferrosilicon suspensions exhibited apparent viscosities ranging from 42, through a minimum of 5.6, to 9 centipoise at 1.9 specific gravity, and from 160, though a minimum of 35, to 85 centipoise at 2.8 specific gravity. The dependency of apparent viscosity or consistency upon intensity of motion is considered to be of particular significance in applications of heavy media where the medium is in rapid motion.

WE were requested to make a digest of our original grinding report, Fine Grinding Investigations at Lake Shore Mines. This digest is much easier to read than the original report, but it lacks the experimental 'evidence' found in the first report which, in many cases, is much more interesting and educational than the conclusions derived from it. In the course of rewriting the paper, we noticed several new angles on the test data which had not occurred to us previously. From the data included in the report and other tests not published, calculations were made which indicated a line of new test work. These tests, among other things, more than suggest a technique for designing the length of mills, the position and number of classifiers, and the total loads a mill should carry.

Introduction The Flin Flon deposit was discovered by Tom Creighton, an experienced prospector and trapper, who in 1914 made his headquarters at The Pas, Manitoba, and still lives there. The discovery was made in the fall of 1914, and Creighton and his associates spent the next summer in investigating the find. In August of 1915 the first claims were located. The property was optioned to Hayden Stone & Company, and in the spring of 1916 they started a diamond-drill campaign. Hayden Stone spent $50,000 on the property and, among other things, completed over 7,500 feet of diamond drilling. The ore not being as high grade as expected, and also being complex in character, Hayden Stone then abandoned their option. In the spring of 1917, Messrs. Earle, Faskin and associates took an option on the property and started an extensive drilling campaign. This campaign accomplished approximately 18,000 feet of drilling and secured for the Faskin interests a 32 per cent interest in the property. In 1920, W. B. Thompson and The Mining Corporation of Canada secured an option, and, while this option was in force, sunk two shafts in the ore-zone and did a considerable amount of drifting and cross-cutting in the ore to study the manner in which it occurred in place, and, by actual channel sampling, to check the grade indicated by the previously accomplished diamond drilling. All of this work had indicated that an ore-body existed on the property containing at least 18,000,000 tons of ore, assaying as follows: gold, 0.074 oz./ton; silver, 1.06 oz./ton; copper, 1.71 per cent; and zinc, ). 45 per cent (1). Complete analyses of composites from the drill holes showed that the ore was very complex in character. It contained the above values in gold, silver, copper, and zinc, as well as large amounts of sulphur and iron, and traces of lead, arsenic, antimony, cobalt, and various other metals. Although the ore was obviously pyritic in character, pyritic smelting, the usual method of treating this class of ore, could not be used to beneficiate the ore with any reasonable expectation of making such a venture a financial success, since coke and coal landed at Flin Flon would be expensive, and siliceous flux was known to be scarce locally and low in grade. The property therefore lay idle until 1925.

"In the present work, two-step heat treatments with preheating treatments at different temperatures (175, 250 and 330°C) as the first step followed by the peak precipitation treatment (375°C/48h) as the second step have been performed in Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloys to study their effects on the formation of dispersoids and evolution of elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance. During the two-step heat treatments, the microhardness is gradually increasing with increasing time until to a plateau after 24 hours when first-treated at 250°C and 330°C while there is a minor decrease with time at 175°C. Results show that both the yield strength and creep resistance at 300°C reach the peak values after the two-step treatment of 250°C/24h+375°C/48h. The formation of dispersoids is greatly related to the type and size of pre-existing Mg2Si precipitated during the preheating treatments, in which that coarsened rod-like ß’-Mg2Si strongly promotes the nucleation of dispersoids while finer needle-like ß’’-Mg2Si has less influence. Under optimized two-step heat treatments and modified alloying elements, the yield strength at 300°C can reach as high as 97 MPa with the minimum creep rate of 2.2×10-9 s-1 at 300°C in Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloys, enabling them as one promising candidate in lightweight aluminum alloys for elevated-temperature applications.INTRODUCTION Due to the rapid demand from weight-sensitive automotive and aerospace industrials for the light alloys, such as aluminum alloy on the elevated-temperature applications, Al-Mn 3xxx alloys has been developed to obtain the good properties at both room temperature (RT) and elevated temperature, in which the dispersoid-strengthening mechanism plays a significant role (Li & Arnberg, 2003; Li, Muggerud, Olsen & Furu, 2012; Liu & Chen, 2015, 2015). In our previous works (Liu & Chen, 2015, 2015; Liu, Ma & Chen, 2017), the yield strength and creep resistance at 300°C of Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloy were further improved by modifying the alloying elements, such as Fe and Mo, to optimize the characters of dispersoids, including the size, distribution and the dispersoids free zone (DFZ). For instance, Mo was introduced in aluminum alloy to further improve the volume fraction of dispersoids and reduce the area of DFZ, leading to increasing on both the strength and creep resistance at 300°C (Liu, Ma & Chen, 2017). On the other hand, the mechanical properties became worse at higher Fe content due to its consumption more Mn to form Al6(MnFe) intermetallics, resulting in less available soluted Mn for the precipitation of dispersoids (Liu & Chen, 2015). Therefore, optimizing the characters of dispersoids is always the key to improve the elevated-temperature properties of dispersoid-strengthened aluminum alloys for elevated-temperature applications."

This paper will outline the problems and solutions of the new generation washeries, as well as the recent technological advances which are being considered for future coal preparation plants. The subjects to be covered will include: - reasons for considering coal preparation plants; - raw coal crushing and handling systems; - types of coal cleaning equipment being used versus new equipment being considered; - fine coal circuit sizing; - clean coal centrifuging and dewatering; - thermal dryer problems and changes; - fine refuse dewatering systems; - clean coal storage problems and changes; - materials handling within the plants; and - control systems for preparation plants. The design and integration of the various circuits that form a modern coal preparation plant have led to the creation of an exciting new field of industrial research. As the need for energy sources increases, efficient methods of preparing coals for specific markets will become more important.

"Growing interest in the developing technique of improving the dewatering of filter cakes by the direct application of steam has been apparent during the past year. A number of applications to iron and base-metal concentrates are under study, and intensive work continues on applications to coal cleaning.This paper presents and discusses the data presently available. The effects of material characteristics and operating variables on final cake moisture are examined. Although it is not yet possible to answer all questions regarding the applicability of the technique to specific problems from general data correlations, it is found that the use of these in con-junction with empirical data derived from properly conducted laboratory tests does yield reliable conclusions.Emphasis is placed on the basic economics of the process, and on de-sign criteria for ""steam drying"" filter stations, as applied particularly to metallurgical concentrates. Examples of the use of laboratory tests to solve application problems are given."

"Spiral concentrators are used for processing coal and heavy minerals such as it is the case for the concentration of iron oxide from light silica gangue. The concentration process for iron ore usually consists of a rougher bank of spirals followed by two stages of spiral cleaning. The process control applied to the concentration circuit aims at maintaining a target iron content of the final concentrate and is mainly conducted by adjusting the wash water addition and the position of the splitter gates at the discharge of the spiral. This paper describes the use of a simulator to study control strategies for a gravity concentration circuit using spirals.INTRODUCTION The Canadian iron ore mines are located in the Northern part of Quebec and in Labrador (Neal, 2000). These iron ores consist mainly of hematite with some ore bodies rich in magnetite and ilmenite. The processing of the coarse hematite iron ore consists of the extraction from an open pit mine, followed by the conventional crushing and autogeneous grinding of the ore to obtain a particle size smaller than 1.2 mm. The ground ore assaying 40% hematite (Fe2O3) with quartz (SiO2) as the main gangue is processed by spirals to produce an iron oxide concentrate assaying 90 to 95% hematite.Spirals separate the particles according to their specific gravity and size (Burt, 1984; Bazin et al., 2014). These environment friendly devices have been used for decades and are still used for the preparation of coal and for the concentration of heavy minerals such as iron oxide (Staff, 1977; Wills, 1992). However very little information is available concerning the control of gravity concentration circuits. This paper analyzes the control practice of a gravity concentration circuit using a simulator. The paper consists of 3 sections. The first section describes the operation of spirals and spiral concentration circuits. The second section briefly describes the simulator and shows some simulation results for a gravity concentration circuit. The third section shows the application of the simulator for the study of control strategies for a spiral concentration circuit."

THE PURPOSE of this paper is to indicate the working capacity of different types of ropes for various engineering and mining duties. ROPE CONSTRUCTIONS There are approximately one hundred different designs of ropes in use today but, normally, only about ten are necessary for mining and engineering duties. The rest are designed for unusual equipments, or are different ways of combining wires of special shapes. Basically, the various designs of mining ropes consist of round, triangular, and oval strands, constructed with one or several layers of wire over a single wire, or a compound construction of sever.al wires. To suit different installations ropes are made with 3, 4, 5, or more of these types of strands over a central core, the ?co re itself being manufactured from either a fibrous material or a combination of steel wires. Nevertheless, in mining, the demand for 'locked coil rope', wl1ich may be considered as a single strand, is steadily increasing, especially for use on vertical shaft winding engines. So far as the locked coil rope is concerned, many constructions have been developed to suit different requirements, such as - in addition to winding ropes - aerial carrying Topes, shaft guide ropes and haulage ropes.

I.-THE HISTORY OF THE SYSTEM TO trace the history of the development of the Co-operative Committee System in The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, one must look backward about twenty years. In 1915 and 1916, the first years of the W ar to really affect Canadian life, there were sixteen hundred men working in the Trail plant. These men were, on the whole, a splendid body of men and pa trio tic to the core. They were almost one hundred percent organized, ninety-five percent of them be-longing to the Union of the Western Federation of Miners. Most of the tradesmen belonged to their craft unions as well. For example, there were ? local machinist, steel workers', electrician, boiler maker, bricklayer, and carpenter unions. The Company had always maintained an open-shop policy and refused to enforce membership in any union, but recognized the right of every man to belong to unions. The only exceptions have been the I.W.W. and the One Big Union. Both of these organizations have always been fought by the Company. By 1916, membership in the Western Federation being practically 100 per cent, the Company recognized this organization's authority to make agreements, and a wage and hour agreement was drawn up and signed by the Company and the local officials of the Union, and ratified and signed by the Head Office of the Union in Denver, Colorado. This agreement was for the duration of the war.

An AFMAG survey was flown in 1968 over the Upper Nelson River area, Manitoba. The flight direction was northwest-southeast and flight spacing was 2 miles. In the Cross Lake Subprovince, AFMAG showed that an isolated peridotite outcrop was part of a dike that extended over 80 miles. Diabase dikes are not always marked by an anomaly, but isolated cross-overs, when used in conjunction with geological and magnetic data, permit their extrapolation. Anomalies coincide with areas of sulphide mineralization. In the Flin Fion Subprovince, known and unknown northeast-trending faults are detected. The Berry Creek fault was extended south through Tramping lake, then under the Paleozoic cover. Conductors were detected at, or near, the axes of major synclines within Amisk and Snow Group sediments. Granitic terranes have low conductivity and, because they are characterized by smooth AFMAG profiles, they can be delimited. AF.MAG is being recognized as a geophysical method that can aid geological mapping and interpretation. Its most important contribution to the geologist will be in regions where out-crops are sparse.

"Audrey Resources' Mobrun Mine is located in Dufresnoy Township some 30 km to the northeast of Rouyn-Noranda. The Mobrun tine deposits consist of two major massive sulphide lenses; the newly discovered 1100 lens located 450 m south of the Main zone, and one ntellite lens, the 850-870-930 complex.The 1100 lens is hosted in a large pyroclastic unit bounded to the mouth by rhyolite and andesite flows and by a thick rhyolite unit to the art h. stratigraphically belon the three lenses. It consists of approximately 15 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 10.4 Mt are of economic ade. The Main lens lies comformably above thick rhyolite flows, ecciated and pyritized by the sulphide horizon, and is overlain by ttercalated ash tuffs and rhyolites which host the over-lying satellite ns. The Main lens consists of 3,3 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 523 000 tgrade0.80% Cu, 2.44%Zn,30.19 g/t Ag, and2.2 g/t Au he richer satellite lens (180 000 t) is part of the same volcanic stem and resulted from a resurgence of hydrothermal activity. ructure played a role in the final geometry of the deposits but did not eatly affect the volcanogenic and stratabound nature of the lens. Total production since the start of operations in 1985 amounts to 58 000 t and is restricted to the Main lens. "To minimise mine shaft maintenance over the long-term, some potash mine shaft sinking projects have required the provision of a continuous fully welded waterproof steel liner over a substantial depth to achieve zero water ingress. This brings many challenges, including the implementation of a bottom-up construction sequence incorporating extensive waterproof welding and how to ensure the integrity of the welded liner when subject to substantial temperature fluctuations that are likely to occur with a composite steel-concrete liner placed within an artificially frozen shaft excavation. This paper highlights the key challenges and discusses multiple mitigation measures including vertical shaft movement joints and a combined structural-thermal analysis approach. INTRODUCTION Whilst the application of combined steel and concrete shaft liners using a fully welded steel liner is not new and has been used in several previous projects, most notably at Lanigan (Storck, 1968 & Roesner, 1980), recently the need to provide a continuously welded steel waterproof liner for over 800 m length of shaft for a potash mine has been considered. The need for a fully continuous welded steel liner arises from the perceived benefits of providing a fully dry shaft environment to; increase the life expectancy of the shaft; reduce routine maintenance particularly combatting salt accretion and minimising wash down practices; and improve long-term ground stability by preventing salt dissolution. Whereas previous projects have employed discontinuous sections of steel liner, when a fully continuous liner is employed longitudinal shaft strains from thermal changes result in significant deformations that must be either explicitly accommodated or resisted. Note, these thermal vertical expansion forces are more than capable of lifting the shaft collar and head frame structures should they be fixed in place. Typically, shafts are designed to resist vertical forces (collar loads and self-weight) by creating mechanical interlock with the adjacent ground. In competent rock this occurs incrementally with the construction of the shaft liner, and occasional hitch/crib structures are constructed as intermediate foundations to guarantee the transfer of vertical forces at distinct horizons. Usually this means cribs are constructed at first rock head, above the station level, and at the sump, although sometimes additional cribs are formed when entering and exiting weak strata or when a change in shaft liner construction is required."

"Abstract - MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic data collected over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide deposits have been modeled using three modeling packages. The EMQ package is a quick inversion tool which indicates that the Iso body is a dipping, plate-like body. The New Insco body is inferred to have a geometry somewhere between a dipping plate and a sphere. The Maxwell package was used to refine the properties of the plate-like body at Iso. The EMIGMA package was able to identify which parts of the New Insco orebody were more conductive. It was observed that the most conductive parts correspond to copper-rich zones and the next most conductive to pyrite-rich zones. The EMIGMA package was also used to show that a thick-prism model might be more appropriate for the New Insco orebody. Gravity modeling constrained by the known geology was successful in identifying the denser sulfide zones. The densest zones appear to be pyrite rich. Magnetic modeling identified diabase dikes. Over New Insco, a small magnetic anomaly was attributed to pyrrhotite-rich sulfides. There was only a weak magnetic anomaly over the Iso body, consistent with the nonmagnetic sulfides logged in the holes drilled at that location. "In 1989 and 1990 abnormally high levels of arsenic in ore from the Thompson Open Pit Mine threatened Manitoba Division's electro-nickel production. The paper will discuss our development of a flotation process to separate pentlandite and gersdorffite (the prime nickel and arsenic bearing minerals).The presentation will focus on the development of the process from conception, through lab and plant test work, to plant optimization and full scale production. The paper will conclude with the benefits and cost of the completed project.INTRODUCTIONRejection of arsenic from nickel sulphide ores was not a primary concern in the Manitoba Division until 1989. At that time increased production in the Thompson Open Pit mine, which contains high arsenic ore zones, resulted in excess amounts of arsenic in the Thompson Refinery affecting electro-nickel quality. This problem was resolved through extensive efforts by Mill personnel.
