But uch flu id may play an important part in Archaean pluton associated lode gold deposits whe re ultra high temperature fluids, rich in C02-CO-COS, may be associated with magma underplating and crustal assi mil ation processes (sag subduction) associated with very den e ult ramafic magma . The segment of Canadian industry based on smelting of alum in um and manufacture of consumer products is based entirely on imported alumina and bauxite. In the absence of Canadian bauxite deposits, consideration of anorthosite, a less desirable aluminous rock, is being undertaken as one alternative in maintaining assurance of supply. Anorthosites in Canada cover many thousands of square kilometres of the Precambrian Shield. Although compositions vary widely among Canadian anorthosites, many appear to exceed the specified minimum of 25% A I 20 3 in bodies containing more than the required JOO million tonnes. A lthough most Canadian anorthosites are of Precambrian age, one located in British Columbia has been identified as being Middle _Cretaceous.

Utilization of both slag and its heat for hot slag is a great challenge for iron and steel industry. Many methods of hot slag modification for directly converting hot slag into value-added materials were researched in recent years, and waste heat of hot slag could thereby be transformed into inner energy or chemical energy of the materials. In this paper, an experiment of converting hot slag directly into glass ceramics by hot slag modification method was conducted. A cooled modifiers mainly composed of fly ash were firstly heated though a cyclone furnace and then fell into a molten bath to mix with hot steel slag. Half of hot slag was used as raw materials and accordingly about half energy consumption, about 5MJ/kg for melting raw materials was saved in the process compared with that of traditional producing method. Frit quenched from the modified hot slag had a higher basicity of 0.6-0.7 than traditional frits in order to reduce the needed amount of cold modifiers and accordingly utilize more hot slag and its waste heat. Glass ceramics were further prepared from the frit and a heat treatment of one-stage method is more suiter to such frit than that of two-stage method. The glass-ceramics with basicity of 0.6 and heat-treated by one stage method had the best performance with bending strength of 146.46 MPa, Vickers hardness of 6.79 GPa, water absorption rate of below 2% and shrinkage rate of around 10%.

Pyrophyllite, an AI silicate used in the production of ceramic materials, is formed mainly by alteration of felsic to intermediate volcanic rocks, either directly (at temperatures of 250-300°C and pressures of 1-2 kbar) or by subsequent low-grade metamorphism of aluminous protoliths produced by thermal fluids or even by prolonged weathering. Most pyrophyllite deposits in North America are concentrated in a belt of Late Precambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks, the "Avalon Zone ", which extends along the eastern flank of the Appalachian mountain system from Newfoundland to the southeastern U.S.A. The only producing pyrophyllite mine in Canada is an open pit located near the settlement of Foxtrap on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. It lies in a belt of rhyolitic flows and pyroclastics intruded by a granitoid pluton. The rocks have been leached along a shear- or fracture zone, depleted in silica, alkalies, Ca, Mg and Fe by the action of hydrothermal fluids, and recrystallized to a very fine-grained massive assemblage of pyrophyllite, muscovite ("sericite") and quartz. High-grade pyrophyllite lenses contain small nodules of diaspore with minor barite; rutile is present in trace amounts. The close proximity of all pyrophyllitized zones on the peninsula to the granite contact suggests that the alteration was produced by thermal fluids genetically connected with the granitoid pluton. The fine-grained pyrophyllite-bearing rocks, with their simple mineralogy, are suitable for quantitative modal analysis by X-ray diffraction. Chemically analyzed samples from the alteration zone were used for the construction of working curves by plotting calculated mineral content against the intensity of selected diffraction peaks. The accuracy of the resulting curves is ±4.5% for quartz, ±3.6% for pyrophyllite and ±2.7% for muscovite. Pelletized samples give best results. The XRD method is suitable for a rapid analysis of a large number of grab or core samples to outline higher-grade areas for more detailed sampling.

"THE property of Red Mountain Mines Limited is located 11/2 miles north and west of the town of Rossland, in southern British Columbia. The mine is situated on the flank of Red mountain, famous in pioneer days as the site of a number of profitable gold-copper producers. Mining and milling commenced in May, 1966, and by the first of July the concentrator was treating close to its average design capacity of 400 tons per day. The following description of the property and its operations is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with geology, mining and milling.GeologyAll the known ore reserves of Red Mountain Mines occur on the Coxey claim, on the west slope of Red mountain. Although there are indications of molybdenite mineralization elsewhere on the Company's property, these have not been developed.The Coxey and adjoining areas are underlain by the Mount Roberts formation of the Rossland volca-nics. This formation consists of an interbedded series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, mostly brecciated and silicified near the ore zone, and all intruded by igneous rocks which occur in various forms, and vary in composition from basic to acid. The country rock in the vicinity of the mineralization seems to be mostly a volcanic, approximately andesitic in composition, and possibly a surface flow. There is much banding, some of which is undoubtedly due to tuff and agglomerate layers, and some to narrow, siliceous, sedimentary horizons such as the surface exposure of the main ""A"" orebody, much of which was a thin capping of greyish banded rock that looked like quartzite. The drill holes also intersected occasional layers of black, argillaceous quartzite, sometimes altered to a greenish colour. The whole assemblage has been silicified with varied intensity, sometimes to such an extent as to have obscured or obliterated the original characteristics. The mineralized zone has also been strongly brecciated, the fragments varying in size from less than an inch up to large masses, best described as a mega-breccia. Anomalous results obtained in drilling, such as sedimentary sections that do not appear in adjoining holes, may sometimes be due to the presence of these large blocks, no longer in their original position. The whole volcanic unit is thus very complex and confusing. For practical purposes, the ore may be said to occur in a greenstone formation with minor sedimentary interbeds and considerable later igneous material."

The Department of Mines as at present constituted has evolved from the organization which came into existence following the passage of the Geology and Mines Act by the Dominion Parliament in 1907. At the outset, it may be said that it is not a function of the Department of Mines, nor of any of its branches, to administer the mining rights vested in the Crown. The title to Crown lands in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia ( with the exception of certain specified areas, such as Indian Reserves, Ordnance Lands, the Railway Belt of British Columbia, and the Peace River Black) is vested in the respective provincial governments ; the title to Crown Lands in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and in the Canadian Arctic, is vested in the Dominion Government, and matters pertaining thereto are (with a few exceptions) administered by the Department of the Interior, Ottawa. Nor are statistics of mineral production at present collected and published by the Department of Mines. This function did belong to the Geological Survey from 1886 to 1906, and to the Mines Branch from 1907 to 1920; but commencing with 192l this duty was transferred to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, consequent upon the decision of Government to place the collection of all statistics under the direction of one officer.

Type and shape of large dams founded on rock depend upon the expected deformation of their foundation. Their design consequently requires the assessment of the deformability of the rock mass at large scale. Seismic refraction, laboratory tests on rock samples and empirical formulas can provide an order of magnitude of the deformation modulus, with a limited degree of reliability. Direct in-situ measurement of the deformability of a volume of rock is therefore preferred, which integrate the effect of discontinuities, such as plate loading tests, dilatometric tests, etc. The authors have been compiling results obtained by in-situ deformability tests on a number of dam sites, including the Scarabée (“Petite Sismique”) method. This last method consists in thoroughly analysing the shape of seismic wave forms transmitted through the rock mass. It has been used since now more than 40 years over a large number of dam foundations, and has proved to provide a satisfactory assessment of the static deformation modulus. After comparing the results obtained from different methods on six dam sites, the Authors conclude that their reliability closely depends upon the size of the loading device in relation to the spacing of the discontinuities. Attempts to correlate results from different types of in-situ loading tests reveal difficult, because closely depending upon local geotechnical conditions at test location. Plate jacking tests appear to be the most reliable, because involving a relatively large volume of rock. On the other hand, the Scarabée method (“Petite Sismique”) allows a rapid assessment of the deformation characteristics of the rock mass at large scale, and has been found to provide values generally in agreement with those from plate loading tests, while dilatometric or flat-jack tests were found too dependent upon local conditions. The Authors conclude that preference should be given first to the Scarabée method, which uses light equipment and is quickly performed, together with an accurate geological and geotechnical assessment for interpretation. In a second stage, Scarabée shall be complemented by adequately performed plate jacking tests in selected locations, in order to cross-check results and refine the assessment. The general accordance between the results of the two methods, which both can integrate anisotropy of rock masses, justifies this statement.

THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a process for producing low-density steel shapes by direct reduction of iron oxide powders. The process is a combination of reduction, sintering (without compaction), and carburizing, and has been described by Cavanagh (1). Iron oxide powder, in the form of mill scale or highly concentrated iron ore, carefully sized, is poured into a porous mould. A reducing agent, generally coke breeze, is placed around this mould in a heat resistant sagger which is sealed off and heated to 2,000°F. for a number of hours. The coke/ ore ratio, the particle size distribution, the temperature and time of soaking, and the size and shape of the reduced product, determine the densities and carbon contents attained. The Defence Research Board sponsored a programme of research into some of the mechanical properties of the material (which was named Controlled Density Steel) and this paper is an account of various factors which govern the tensile strength of the steel. The ?practically attainable range of density is from 1.5 to 5.5 gm./ cc. but higher densities are obtained on hot working. This paper, however, is restricted to discussion of results for moulded products.

The current mining operations at Newmont Boddington Gold Mine (NBG) commenced in 2008, and commissioning of the processing plant started in the latter half of 2009. Metso Process Technology and Innovation were engaged to assist NBG with commissioning and project ramp-up through the implementation of a comprehensive ?Mine-to-Mill? Process Integration and Optimisation project. This methodology entailed extensive data collection which included drill and blast audits, ore characterisation, comprehensive comminution circuit surveys and review of operational data to assess the limitations within the current mining and processing operations. The results of these investigations have been used to define the operating base line of both the mining and processing areas and identify improvement opportunities. The use of modelling and simulations, utilising actual production data, has allowed for multiple scenarios to be evaluated, minimising the requirement for actual trials and thereby minimising impact on the operation. Improvements implemented to date include: the introduction of routine rock strength measurement for inclusion in block models, modifications to blast design improving ROM fragmentation and downstream comminution process performance, and changes to improve performance of secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Close cooperation between the mine and plant personnel is playing a significant role in overcoming the challenges presented to this operation and further improvements are targeted for the second full year of process plant operation.

The loss of fluid to the formation adjacent a fracture governs the areal extent of the fracture and the success of hydraulic fracturing as a production stimulation technique. The three flow mechanisms which control this loss are the result of the viscosity of the fracturing fluid and the permeability of the formation to the fracturing fluid, its wall building properties, and the combined effects of viscosity and compressibility of the reservoir fluid. The effects of these flow mechanisms can be evaluated in terms of a fracturing fluid coefficient, the fundamental concepts of which are developed in the paper. The fracturing fluid coefficient, which may be used in calculating the areal extent of fracturing, affords a direct measure of the effectiveness of fracturing fluids. The area of hydraulically created fractures is in-creased as the coefficient is de-creased. The fifteen-fold variation noted in this coefficient for the commercially available fracturing fluids tested resulted in a six-fold difference m the calculated areal extent of the fracture system.

A study to investigate the recovery of base metals, notably copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and manganese from iron-free concentrated chloride solutions using ion exchange was undertaken. In such solutions, apart from nickel and, to a lesser extent manganese, these metals are present predominantly as complex anions, and therefore conventional separation techniques based on cationic resins are not applicable. The results demonstrated that zinc, copper and cobalt can all be separately recovered leaving nickel and manganese behind. Specifically, zinc is a major nuisance element in nickel and cobalt processing, and the testwork showed that it can be preferentially removed prior to copper and cobalt. Selective resins for both copper and cobalt were identified, and it was demonstrated that the strength of the chloride background matrix has a significant effect on the efficiency of separation. An additional major advantage in such systems is that stripping can mostly be effected with water. Finally, some observations are made on the hurdles that must be overcome when attempting to introduce and commercialise new technologies.

Acid-producing mine tailings are present at many active and inactive mine sites and pose an environmental liability due to the potential for acid rock drainage. Acid rock drainage originating from a tailings pile, a waste rock pile, or exposed sulfide-rich rock, can cause discoloration and turbidity in receiving waters, and the loading of ions mobilized by the acid can cause a decrease in aquatic flora and fauna, and reduction in the quality of groundwater. The primary cause of acid generation is the oxidation of sulfide minerals, predominantly pyrite and pyrrhotite. Considerable mine tailings are being stored on surface in vast tailings impoundment areas across Canada. In the tailings within this study, from the Sudbury, Ontario area, the sulfide mineral of primary concern with respect to acid generation is pyrrhotite. Different tailings types show varying and progressive degrees of oxidation correlating to their specific sulfur contents. The degree of oxidation is determined by the relative extent to which the sulfides have reacted as well as the depth of oxidation within the tailings. Natural Resources Canada, CanmetMINING is dedicated to research supporting the Green Mining Initiative, a program reducing business risks by demonstrating practices that reduce environmental impacts. In cooperation with the Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC), applied research aims to reduce land disturbance, waste volumes, and releases to the environment. By reutilizing tailings from vast impoundment areas as a component in backfill, the potential environmental impact would be lessened considerably, due to the reduced tonnage stored on surface long-term. From an operating perspective, there is a need for supplemental feed for backfill from time to time. The reclamation of old tailings for use in backfill is also driven by the fact that old tailings ponds may not be structurally stable, and it may be more cost effective to remove the tailings than to upgrade the impoundment structure. However it is imperative that these old tailings be fully characterized to determine their suitability for use underground, in order to ensure the long-term integrity of the resulting backfill matrix. A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of tailings reclamation from old impoundment areas as a significant component in backfill. The materials were first physically and chemically characterized, followed by preparation of samples to determine optimal mix proportions for strength development for both paste and hydraulic fill compliance. It was found that the amount of oxidized tailings included in the backfill material had a profound effect on both the segregation and settling properties of the backfill matrix, as well as the mechanical properties of the samples. The strategies for decision-making, based on the criteria for material characterization, mining plan, and cost effectiveness are discussed.

"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. Slim hole bit performance and cost all compared for overall bit averages as part of analysis."

"Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. "The study of a detailed series of structure and isopach maps of the Palaeozoic strata of southwestern Manitoba indicates that the principal Palaeozoic tectonic elements -the Williston Basin and Elk Point Basin -have been modified to a considerable extent by major tectonic features of the Precambrian basement. The principal basement feature is the break between the Churchill and Superior provinces, which coincides roughly with the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. East-west-trending orogenic belts within the Superior crustal block may also be reflected to some extent in later Palaeozoic movements. In addition, the Superior crustal block, as a whole, appears to have had a slightly different response to the tectonic forces, giving rise to both basin subsidence and basin uplift. During periods of deposition, especially during Ordovician time, the Manitoba portion of the basin appears to have undergone a relatively higher rate of subsidence, whereas during periods of erosion relatively greater amounts of uplift and truncation have occurred. As a result, the depositional and erosional patterns for most of the Palaeozoic formations in southwestern Manitoba are somewhat anomalous relative to the regional basin framework.Some prominent Palaeozoic structures probably are the result of salt solution and differential compaction caused directly or indirectly by relatively minor tectonic movements related to Precambrian basement features. In particular, the prominent hinge line at the edge of the Devonian Prairie Evaporite salt basin may be due, in large part, to salt solution. Numerous other small structural lows, structural highs and isopach thicks, probably resulting from salt solution, occur along the salt edge and have been important in modifying and controlling Mississippian oil accumulation in the Daly-Virden producing area."

"IntroductionThis chapter will discuss the operational and maintenance aspects of a heavy media cyclone circuits as applied to coal processing and using magnetite as the media. It deals with heavy media bath separators in terms of types of media, equipment, circuits, media recovery, maintenance, and product handling. It will detail heavy media cyclone operation and supplement the previously described topics.The heavy media cyclone was first developed in the Netherlands by the Dutch State Mines in 1945. A cyclone plant was not built in North America until 1961. Traditionally, heavy media cyclones have been used to treat size fractions between 1lz in. (12 .6 mm) and 35 mesh (0.5 mm). High maintenance related to heavy media bath separators has recently prompted some plants to crush all raw coal to minus 2 in. for treatment in heavy media cyclones.The heavy media bath separators utilize only the force of gravity to make the separation between heavy and light particles. This requires lengthy retention time which can lower capacity and also is inefficient for finer particles. A heavy media cyclone utilizes centrifugal forces which are 20 to 200 times greater than the force of gravity. This means the separation between coal and the impurities occurs very quickly, therefore a low retention time is required allowing cyclones to have high tonnage capacities. Also these greater forces allow better separation for the finer particle sizes.Heavy media cyclones are now widely used to produce both metallurgical and thermal coal. Work is in progress to reduce magnetite consumption, extend wear life, increase tonnage capacity, improve separation efficiency and automatically control these cyclone circuits."

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. "AbstractThe rod mill introduced into the Sullivan Concentrator flow in September, 1948, replaced two sets of 74 in. by 20 in. rolls and their accompanying screens. In addition to the work formerly done by the rolls, the rod mill is producing a finer product and one which provides more suitable feed for the primary ball mills. The object of the finer discharge from the •primary mills is to make possible a feed directly from the mills to a series of flotation machines where a large portion of the galena can be withdrawn from the circuit while the galena is still coarsely granular. The interposing of classifiers between grinding and flotation means the selective grinding of the galena.The author summarizes the work of •the rod mill through the first 5,000,000 tons and shows that the wear of lifters, liners, and rods is definitely below normal for the type and size of rock being handled. The rod mill, driven through a fluid coupling, has been subject to a range of speeds from 13.5 to 19. A pinion in the speed reducer was changed to allow the extending of the normal speed range of the fluid drive of approximately 4 r.p.m.Since the critical speed inside the liners •is 23.4, the range •in per cent of criticial is 57.7 to 81.2 per cent.The capacity of the mill increases with increasing speed but the character of the product remains approximately the same except when the feed rate is too high.Consumption of steel, power, and other operating data are presented.The author introduces certain fundamental observations on the principles involved •in comminution in order to support the special design and operation of the rod mill."

ABSTRACT The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle and is located in the Abitibi greenstone region of northwestern Quebec, Canada. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with approximately 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. During the first three years of production, three gravity audits were carried out to optimize performance of the gravity circuit. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold recovery, and outlines improvements made to increase gravity performance and reduce operating costs.

THE Privateer mine consists of a group of mineral claims situated in the Zeballos area, on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 180 miles north of Victoria. Although Zeballos is a comparatively new mining camp, its transportation facilities can be considered exceptionally good. General freight and supplies are brought in by either C.P.R. or Frank Waterhouse steamers from either Victoria or Vancouver. Service by these boats varies from five to ten days and the trip from Victoria takes approximately two days. Passengers may use the C.P.R. boats, or, if speed is essential, they may fly, in which case they have the choice of two flying companies, namely, Canadian Air-ways, Limited, and Ginger Coote Airways. The average flight from Vancouver takes approximately two hours. Excellent unloading facilities are provided at the beach by a government dock for the steamers and a floating dock for aeroplanes. The mine, which is approximately five miles from the beach, is serviced by a fairly good gravel road, which has proved satisfactory for all haulage purposes. Zeballos has the reputation of having one of the heaviest rainfalls on the west coast, but as no accurate records have been kept, no comparisons can be made. H. C. Gunning, in his report, comments on the weather from 1929 to 1932, and one would judge that the practically continuous rainfall did not add to the pleasures of the field work. During the summer of 1938, the opposite condition prevailed and the area had exceptionally dry and pleasant weather. The snowfall is generally light at the lower elevations, but very heavy higher up. No extreme cold weather is encountered during the winter, which is generally short.
