"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. The resin beads are off-white in colour and spherical, with a nominal size of 100% +600 µm. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal–cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH of less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces the best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX100 resin for use in its G-REX column, as part of its unique suite of gravity gold–handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realized with AURIX100 resin: approximately 4–12% in capital savings and 27–40% in operating costs (Virnig, Mackenzie, Katsikaros, & Gray, 2004). Additionally, AuRIX100 resin is not susceptible to fouling; that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds that would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, a dilute acid wash is periodically conducted in service on the resin to unblock resin pores."

Based on the deep burial depth of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields, Anhui Province, China, this paper puts forward the concept of partitioning of coal deposits according to occurrence conditions. This process is controlled by tectonic forces. The classification scheme of coal deposits exploration types is presented according to occurrence and mining conditions of coal deposits as viewed from the perspective of deep coal exploration properties. The principles underlying geological exploration services for the resources development are incorporated. There are six exploration types of coal deposits in the Huainan and Huaibei coalfields. Exploration models tailored to different types of exploration have been established and exploration strategies corresponding to different exploration models have been proposed. Steady-state temperature must be measured for the deep heat-harm type of coal deposit. The sealing coring of mine gas samples should be performed for the high mine gas type of coal deposit. For coal deposits with complex structures, such as those located beneath nappes, coal-controlling structural styles must be performed. Existing data on shallow districts are very important to the research of folds and fault-block types of coal deposits beneath and peripheral to old and existing coal mine areas. For the types of fault-block coal deposits hidden by thick Cenozoic cover, particular attention must be paid to comprehensive use of research on regional coal occurrence law and geophysical methods. The present work promotes the exploration level of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields to best meet the need for sustainable development of the coal industry.

"Data handling is an important step in the development of a simulator of a mineral processing circuit. The model requires representative data of the scenario to be modeled. The model development involves protocols that must be followed very closely to complete a successful project.Data handling of large and diverse datasets (metallurgical test results, geological data, mining models, historical data, etc.) is a key element of the model. The information needs to be processed, reconciled, interpreted, modeled and presented to support the design or the optimization of a mineral processing plant.Best practice recommends that teams from different disciplines (such as mining, metallurgy, geology and environmental) interact to define the most important variables that could influence the simulator. For example by adopting a geometallurgical approach in the earlier stages of the project, it is possible to consolidate the number of main ore rock types in a testwork program (saving money and time) by involving geologists and metallurgists in the sample selection and data interpretation.Planning the development of a model involves an understanding of the software capabilities but also the limitations and the magnitude of the data required to calibrate the model in case of changes in the project.A successful model requires a deep understanding of the circuit to be modeled and thus plant personnel should be considered as members of the team.This paper describes the use of the "state of the art" tools for data analysis, simulation and optimization; and shows three practical examples of the use those tools in the design of mineral processing plants."

If the efforts of the early explorers in Canada were expended in "seeking with equal ardour, proselytes and gold", history fails of any record of their success in the search for the precious metal. As early as 1849 not a few Canadians travelled from the east by land and water to the Californian goldfields. In the then settled part of Canadathe east-people were alive to the value of any mineral discovery; but the west, owing to its remoteness and to there being no ready means of communication, was virtually isolated from the east.

"The current state of environment has been achieved by acting linearly. At the same time, we know that transition towards circular economy cannot be made the same way that we have used to, trusting only a market economy and economic growth. Environmental improvements have been promoted, some progress has been made, but major steps towards sustainability have not been taken. Industry is now facing significant change, from process related environmental thinking to product-based environmental thinking.Engineers make decisions which have lifelong influence and even longer on environment and society. Material engineers in case of saving natural resources and increasing material cycle, have an important role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Best knowledge of minerals and materials is in the material development phase. If we want to increase the cycle of different materials, it is vital to make decisions towards circular economy in early phase of product´s life cycle.The target of this study is to promote circular economy; to increase material efficiency; to save natural resources; and to extend product lifecycles in process industry via product design and material development. In this study we have a new kind of cooperation. We combine two disciplines, engineering science and fine arts. We promote sustainability via breaking out the silos. We bring the cyclic artistic thinking into engineering science and environmental research. The new research combination makes the existing information visible in a new way, and it will change attitudes and ways to act by means other than traditional linear rationality.We have tested the new working method via the industrial case study with the chosen product: the sandwich panel of construction industry. The target of the study was to create something new from the chosen product with artistic thinking. The working method will be presented in this paper."

"Extruded aluminum profiles are increasingly used for lightweight vehicle construction. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles, not only the stress state but also the orientation influenced both the deformation and damage behavior. For the material characterization smooth tensile tests were performed in six orientations, both stress-strain curves and r-values were registered. Moreover notched tensile and shear-tension tests were performed in three directions. Finally punch specimens were tested to investigate biaxial loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) analyses were performed to determine local strain values such as critical values at failure. Numerical investigations were conducted with the strain based damage model GISSMO, which is well suited and widely applied for crash simulation. For a strain based failure model the choice of the deformation model is crucial. Deformation models with increasing complexity were investigated to find the best compromise over all experiments. It was found that there is still a great requirement on development of a material model which describes the orientation dependence of the hardening behavior over all stress states in order to be able to use a strain based failure model reliably.INTRODUCTION Weight reduction is an important step for less energy consumption and as a consequence aluminium is increasingly used in automotive parts. An important field of application is the well-established aluminium extrusion which allows the realisation of quite complex shapes of profiles required for an innovative lightweight design with integrated functions. Typical applications are chassis parts, bumpers, crash elements, air bags, etc. Especially the Al–Mg–Si medium strength alloys of the 6000 series can be easily extruded to form complex profiles and prevail for extrusion. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles not only the influence of the stress state but also the orientation with respect to the extrusion direction have an influence on both the deformation and damage behavior and need to be characterized. The effect of orientation on deformation behavior has been intensively investigated in the last decades and material models haves been proposed (e.g. Barlat & Lian, 1989; Barlat, Lege, & Brem, 1991; Barlat et al., 2003) to describe accurately anisotropic behavior. However it can be noticed that the parameters of anisotropic material models often rely on the yield stress in different directions, which means that the effect of strain hardening is not automatically accounted for. The accuracy of the models at large deformation is not guaranteed and has to be verified. In contrast to deformation models both the characterisation and the modeling of anisotropic damage behavior are not systematically studied. Isotropic failure models based on a critical strain as function of stress triaxiality (ratio of the hydrostatic stress to von Mises equivalent stress) are widely used for crash application (e.g., Bai & Wierzbicki, 2010; Sun, Andrieux & Feucht, 2009; Sun et al., 2013). The mechanisms of failure are manifold and not fully understood; to develop an anisotropic failure model it is mandatory to also have experimental data in different orientations for loading scenarios other than uniaxial tension, e. g. shear, biaxial tension, which implies an extensive experiment plan. This makes the development of failure models more challenging than deformation models for which it is possible to develop a reasonable anisotropic model using the framework of yield function and calibrate the material parameters based on results of tensile tests in different directions. AREAS in which the surface de-posits consist of organic material -known in some parts of Canada as muskeg and in Europe, more generally, as peat lands -have long been some of the least rewarding of lands of the north temperature zone. Even in such countries as Great Britain, Holland, and Denmark where a good deal of incentive exists to develop all available land, the use of peat land has been negligible except as a source of fuel. Only recently have efforts shown promise in re-claiming these lands for farming or for forestry. Russia has large areas of peat and use is made of it for power generation. The Russian people have also ?developed a variety of machines for handling peat, which would indicate that they are well ahead of the Wes tern World in their technical and physical ability to solve some of the problems. Certainly in Canada, where there are over 500,000 square miles of muskeg, the economic aspects of this problem are important. This is especially true in considering the shifting emphasis to northern development. Not only is muskeg in possession of great stretches of terrain, thereby rendering it useless for agricultural purposes, but it is apparently moving into forested areas and reducing their productivity. In addition, it lies as a great barrier to movement in the search for and development of such natural resources as petroleum, natural gas and minerals generally. This situation has long been recognized in Canada but only recently have organized efforts been made to study the problems and search out ways of overcoming them.

TAXATION has become a major item in the operation of Canadian mines, and, as such, merits our most serious consideration. I feel it was a splendid idea for the Institute to set aside this time for a frank discussion of this important subject, and believe great benefit will result from a better understanding of the methods and underlying principles involved. Mining, as a great national industry, may quite properly be called upon to pay its fair share of the cost of running the country; and there is no tendency on our part to avoid this responsibility. There is, however, a very definite demand that the proportion be just, and fairly and sensibly applied. I believe that Mr. C. G. Williams, Secretary of the Canadian Metal Mining Association, and others, are giving details of the various Provincial and Dominion regulati6ns, so I shall not touch on that phase of the situation. However, there are some important factors to which I should like very briefly to call your attention. The first is the vital need for stability. As you all know, a considerable period must elapse between the preliminary stages of any mining venture and the time when it comes to production-or is finally abandoned as un-profitable. These early days are fraught with many unavoidable uncertainties. If, to these natural hazards, the apprehension of instability of governmental action be added, the risk becomes so great that capital seeks other and safer fields for investment, and many otherwise promising projects are thus discarded. There probably never has been a time in recent years when so much money was seeking investment as now. Under favourable conditions, the development of our great mineral resources would be a natural and attractive outlet for this money. The amount of taxation which the mining industry can properly absorb is of the utmost importance at this time, and it might be well to consider this question in its relation to the economic stability of our country, for it cannot be too greatly emphasized that direct taxation is only one item in the net return which our governments derive from the mining industry. Indeed, the many indirect benefits are so manifest that it would seem almost unnecessary to enumerate them! We almost invariably think of mine taxation as a direct company tax-overlooking the fact that sales tax, customs duties, acreage tax, income tax on mine dividends, foreign shareholders' dividend tax, and others, must all be taken into consideration. It would seem that the economic value of non-ferrous metal mining in Canada is not sufficiently understood and appreciated.

Global warming presents an enormous challenge to the steel industry, which is both carbon-intensive and energy efficient. Lean production can provide some short-term emission mitigation, at the level of the Kyoto requirements. In the middle term, more use of scrap will also help alleviate emissions. But to reach much larger reductions in GHG emissions, on a par with the likely targets that will be set after the Kyoto period, the steel industry will have to imagine new production paradigms, which constitutes its most formidable challenge for the years to come. Carbon capture and sequestration, processes leaner in carbon use, electricity and hydrogen from green sources will have to be added together in a patchwork of process routes, which will have to be developed at great risk in the next decade, hopefully through broad international cooperation.

What has it accomplished? On behalf of the National Advisory Committee, that is what I want to tell you about this afternoon.HistoryYou will remember that, in 1946, the Geology Division of the C.I.M. set up a Committee on Geological Research. This Committee, under the Chairmanship of Dr. J. E. HAWLEY, found ""that there is no national organization interested in surveying, co-ordinating, and implementing with financial help, fundamental and much needed geological research. Accordingly, the first and most necessary step to put the geological sciences in Canada on a proper footing .is the recommendation that a National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geological Sciences be formed"" (l).This recommendation was endorsed •by the President and Council of the C.I.M. in 1947 and submitted to the Minister of Mines and Resources."

Today Li-ion batteries are considered as one of the most attractive available energy storage solutions. However in order to overcome environmental, legislative and economic issues, the management of used batteries has to be considered and mainly the recycling. The present paper deals with the recycling of used Li-ion batteries and the recovery of high value metals from active materials of electrodes. Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) and lithium manganese nickel magnesium oxide (LMNM) cathodes, which contain most of valuable elements typically used in the composition of active materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated by a hydrometallurgy route. The process is divided into two steps: the materials leaching and the elements recovery by a selective chemical separation. Some experimental parameters (acid nature, concentration, time and temperature) are studied to determine the most efficient conditions of dissolution. Then, the valuable elements such as nickel, cobalt and manganese are selectively recovered with a high efficiency close to 100 % and with a high purity by precipitation. By this study, an adaptable hydrometallurgy process can be defined according to the composition of Li-ion batteries to recycle.

The metallurgical treatment of Falconbridge ore re-quires an extremely fine grind of the pyrrhotite portion ? for maximum liberation and recovery of nickel. This paper describes the operation of a grate discharge pebble mill in closed circuit with cyclones regrinding 25 to 30 tons per hour of sulphides to approximately 90 per cent minus 325 mesh. The consumption of the screened ore grinding medium is of the order of 2.5 pounds per kw.-hour, or less than 1 per cent of the tonnage of re-ground sulphides. IN RECENT years, there has been a considerable interest in pebble grinding in the uranium industry, and a number of installations have appeared. However, the use of sulphide ore pebbles as a grinding medium has so far been relatively limited. Ideal utilization of the heat energy in coal should theoretically be secured by supplying each atom of combustible material present with the exact quantity of oxygen necessary for complete combination. An intimate and equal admixture of the fuel particles with air is therefore to be sought. Coal, or the combustible substances of which coal is composed, may be used in solid or liquid or gaseous form. The use of coal in small particles intimately mixed with air is, in effect, a specification of coal in pulverized or dust form. There has been much important development of this manner of using coal, which may be instanced as the outstanding advance in the use of coal as a solid. The completeness and efficiency of combustion in a properly designed dust-fired furnace permits the use of locally available coals of inferior quality, and enables them to be used commercially instead of imported coals of better quality. That is to say, some grades of coal of low calorific value, that are not economically useable in lump form on grates, are useable in pulverised form, because of the more complete combustion thereby obtained, and the consequent more efficient results. In the case of coals that are unsuitable for steam-raising in grate-fired furnaces, because of clinker troubles, (arising usually from a combination of high sulphur content and low-temperature fusibility of the ash content) use in pulverised form has obvious advantages, and in addition gives the benefit of any heat units that are contributed by free sulphur in the coal.

"The Management and Economics Society has undertaken a survey of industry practice in the evaluation of mineral projects. The survey addresses a number of issues relating to evaluation techniques, discounted cash flow methodology, and risk. Completed during the spring and summer of2005, the results provide a record of opinion at an active and vital time in our industry.The 2005 survey questionnaire was distributed by e-mail to groups and organizations around the world. There were 22 respondents out of several hundred questionnaires distributed (we gather this small proportion of respondents is typical for such surveys). The responses, although a small number, show a consistency that suggests that the survey has captured the views of the industry. The results of the survey are summarized below in series of tables and graphs.The reader is cautioned that the results are a snapshot of industry practice at a point in time as represented by a small sampling of the industry's practitioners. These results should be viewed as indicative values."

"The three principal known mineral deposits of the Taku River area lie in the Tulsequah synclinorium. The axis of this north-south trending structure is along Tulsequah River valley; about 6 miles east of the eastern contact of the Coast Range batholith.The one proven mine of the area, the Polaris-Taku, is on the west side of the valley. It is a gold property, the gold occurring in fine needles of arsenopyrite disseminated in carbonatized volcanics. The mine was originally called the Whitewater, and the adjacent area the Whitewater gold belt. During the years 1937 to 1942 gold having a value of $3,284,000 was produced from 313,500 tons of ore milled."

By virtue of its complex nature, the construction industry comprises a wide spectrum of interrelated variables and factors. This multifaceted character of the construction industry puts the use of engineering modeling tools and techniques on top of project management necessities. This research introduces a macro-level earthmoving management system using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to reach the optimum allocation of earthmoving equipment. The Earthmoving Equipment Management System (EEMS) functions through four integrated modules: (1) A Central Database containing information about projects and available equipment; (2) An Equipment per Segment Selection module that calculates the cut and fill quantities, plots the Mass Haul Diagrams, and selects the equipment types to be used for each segment; (3) An Equipment Pool module which determines the production and cost for each available equipment, based upon the project site conditions; and (4) An Optimization Engine equipped with a GA optimization solver. This engine formulates the optimum earthmoving cost for all projects, by changing the number of allocated equipment. The Optimization Engine takes into account the number of available equipment and calculates the weekly equipment allocation. The EEMS model was implemented on an earthmoving company conducting five different projects on hand. The model proved to be an effective tool in providing decision makers with optimum equipment utilization on a multi-project scale to minimize the earthmoving cost. The results were then compared with the company?s existing micro-level management system, demonstrating better performance on the level of savings, amounting to 13% of total earthmoving cost.

The measurement of dust concentration in Ontario mines since 1926 has been accomplished by konimetry, based on South African experience and methods. The introduction of a voluntary program of semi-annual surveys of air conditions at all operations throughout Ontario mines created a need for an instrument that would assess konimeter spots rapidly and accurately. The development of the Electronic Scanner, it is felt, answers this need. A program whereby all konimeter spot samples taken at Ontario mines will be counted at the MAP AO field offices in North Bay is described.

"OIL EXPLORATION in Western Canada has produced outstanding results in the past few years. From such successes as Leduc and Redwater on the western plains, oilmen are now moving north in the ever-widening search for oil. They are reaching new frontiers and meeting new problems presented by this vast hinterland.One of the least known but most troublesome phenomena which will be encountered is permafrost. This term relates to a thickness of soil or other superficial deposit, or even of bed-rock at variable depths beneath the surface, in which a temperature below freezing has continually existed .for a long time. This permanently frozen ground affects, in many ways, oil exploration and exploitation. Seismic records are changed, pipe lines cannot easily be ditched into the ground, formation of wax is speeded-up in tubing and pipe lines, roads are difficult to build, and foundations of buildings and even of drilling 'rigs may require entirely new methods of construction.Permafrost underlies roughly one-fifth of the entire 'land surface of the world. It covers the northerly portions of Eurasia and North America. In the area that we are here concerned with, the southern boundary of permafrost extends south of east from about latitude 59°N. on the Pacific coast across the Rocky mountains, through Great Slave and Athabasca lakes, to cape Henrietta Maria, at the junction of Hudson bay and James bay (see Figure 1). Geologists generally agree that permafrost first appeared in the Pleistocene or Ice Age as the result of abnormal ground freezing."
