A pipeline syphon can be a simple and reliable alternative for water conveyance as compared to otherwise more complex pumping systems or low-level outlet conduits through earthfill dams. In a simple form, it consists of a pipeline constructed over the top of a dam or other high topographic feature, connecting a source pond to a receiving pond or channel (Fig. 1). The syphon action is initiated by removing air from the pipeline (priming) using water pumps, vacuum trucks, or simple devices that can be purchased “off-the-shelf.” Once primed, the syphon flow rate can be controlled or stopped using conventional gate, valve, orifice plate, or other devices. Repriming is not required even if the flow is stopped, provided the syphon was not drained. A limiting factor in considering a pipeline syphon as a design option is the maximum lift (i.e. vertical distance from source pond water level to summit of pipeline syphon) which is approximately 9 m or less, depending on pipeline syphon features and site conditions. A pipeline syphon can be quickly constructed from readily available materials including steel, concrete, polyethylene, or PVC pipe. It is particularly well suited to many of the unique conditions often encountered at mine sites. This paper identifies situations that can sometimes be best resolved using a pipeline syphon. It provides basic principles for pipeline syphon design and includes case histories of their successful application.

"A simple approach to optimizing the performance of an operating carbon in pulp (CIP) or carbon in leach (CIL) plant is presented. It is possible to reproduce the performance of an operating CIP or CIL plant in the laboratory, in small scale batch tests in which the rates of gold leaching and carbon adsorption are determined, coupled with mathematical models that translate the batch kinetic data into predicted steady state profiles of gold in solution and on the carbon across multi-stage adsorption circuits.Once the performance of the commercial plant has been mimicked by the model, the plant operating parameters can be varied systematically in the model, and the likely response of the plant to the stepwise change can be determined. In this way it is possible to inexpensively optimize the design of both greenfields CIP or CIL circuits and plant expansions, or optimize the operating parameters of an existing plant, with no disruption to plant operations and no economic risk to the mining company.This approach has been adopted by IAMGOLD Corporation, to the immediate benefit of two of their existing gold operations. The methodology adopted and the results achieved are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) processes became firmly established in the gold mining industry in the 1980s, initially in South Africa and Australia, from where they spread rapidly to all the gold producing regions of the world. The percentage of annual global gold production by activated carbon-based processes grew from zero in the 1970s to almost 70% by the turn of the century, which represented a phenomenal rate of acceptance of a new technology by a traditionally conservative industry. The main reason for this rapid acceptance of the new technology was the fact that the first few large plants built in South Africa convincingly demonstrated better gold recoveries than the traditional filtration/Merrill Crowe process, with lower capital and operating costs. And as the plants developed an operating track record over their first few years of life, they proved to be remarkably robust mechanically, and highly tolerant of plant upsets, changes in feed composition and solution phase contaminants that had caused problems in Merrill Crowe plants."

"It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidising pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proven difficult.Work conducted at the Ernest Henry Mine, in north western Queensland, Australia, at laboratory and pilot plant scale clearly indicated that using a high chrome grinding media resulted in significant improvements in both copper and gold recoveries. However, advancing this work to plant trial represented considerable financial and technical risk to the mine.This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during the high chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry, and the statistical methodology utilised to interpret the results. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial.To date, the trial has produced excellent results: indicating that the copper recovery has improved by about 2 percent. The successful application of high chrome grinding media to the Ernest Henry ore has increased metal value by $18.7 million USD per annum based on current spot price for copper.INTRODUCTIONTheoryThe application of electrochemically inert grinding media to mineral systems has been extensively studied (Table 1). The paper presents a survey of the possibilities of the simulation techniques for improving the design and operation of gold processing plants. The procedure to construct kinetic models that are used in simulators is first reviewed, and examples are given for cyanide gold dissolution and gold adsorption on carbon. Then, an overview of the structures of the plant simulators is proposed, and the simulation equations formulated for a carbon-in-leach process. Finally, the potential of simulation methods is illustrated by four examples. The first one shows how it is possible to use a simulator to design a cascade of leaching tanks while optimizing an economic performance criterion. The second one illustrates the role of simulators for optimal tuning of the cyanide addition strategy in a leaching circuit. The third example focuses on the power of simulation to design carbon transfer strategies in a carbon-in-pulp process. Finally, the last example shows the role of on-line simulators for optimally supervising the automatic control of cyanide addition into leaching tanks.

"Gold-silver mineralization at Red Mountain (1992 resource of 2.5 million tonnes grading 12.8 g/t Au and 38.1 g/t Ag) occurs within several discrete zones within a folded sequence of Middle to Late Triassic Triassic sedimentary rocks, Early Jurassic volcaniclastic and pyroclastic rocks, and Early Jurassic intrusions. Three phases of Early Jurassic sills and stocks collectively comprise the Golds/ide intrusions: (1) irregular bodies of medium-grained hornblende monzodiorite (Hillside porphyry); (2) hornblende-biotite + quartz porphyritic monzodiorite to quartz monzodiorite (Golds/ide porphyry; U-Pb zircon ages of 197.1 + 1.9 Ma); and (3) biotite porphyritic hornblende monzodiorite sills (Biotite porphyry). Contact breccias and igneous breccia dikes are common features of the Golds/ide intrusions. Chemical similarities and equivalent ages of volcanic rocks and intrusions, and the presence of intrusive clasts in volcanic rocks suggest that the intrusions are feeders to overlying volcanic units.Hydrothermal alteration affects all pre-Tertiary rocks on Red Mountain, including all phases of the Golds/ide intrusions. Several shallow-dipping alteration zones are developed sequentially above a propylitic quartz stockwork/molybdenum zone. These include: (1) sericite-quartz-pyrite alteration (pyrite-dominant alteration); (2) chlorite-K-feldspar-sericite-titanite alteration with disseminated and vein pyrrhotite (pyrrhotite-dominant alteration); and (3) brown to black tourmaline veins and K-feldspar-pyrite-titanite-actinolite alteration. Anomalous gold(> 0.3 g/t) mineralization is developed at the transition from the pyrite to the pyrrhotite dominant alteration over a > 1 km2 area. Within this anomalous zone, high-grade (3 g/t to 20 g/t Au) gold-silver mineralization occurs in 5 m to 29 m thick, semi-tabular pyrite + pyrrhotite stockworks with intense sericitic alteration and surrounding disseminated sphalerite + pyrrhotite.Stratigraphic, spatial and geochronologic relations and alteration zoning indicate that mineralization formed in a subvolcanic environment at the top of the Golds/ide intrusions and at the base of the Early Jurassic volcanic pile. The Golds/ide porphyry is interpreted to be the mineralizing intrusion. The alteration zoning, molybdenum-copper mineralized quartz stockworks, extensive Ksilicate and tourmaline alteration, and the relationship with a hypabyssal porphyritic intrusion show similarities to many porphyry systems."

Introduction Although the equilibrium conditions of the copper-tin alloys have been the subject of a ?great amount of research, the equilibrium diagram is still in doubt. The first systematic investigation of the series was made in 1894 by Le Chatelier, who published a freezing-point curve. In 1895, Roberts-Austen and Stansfield published the complete liquidus and partial solidus curves, which they modified somewhat in 1897. Their liquidus as given in 1897 is essentially that accepted today (Figure 3). Haycock and Neville also published a liquid us curve in 1897. In 1898, William Campbell published a series of micrographs showing the changes in microstructure which accompanied the thermal changes of Stansfield? s diagram. The classic work on the bronze series was published by Heycock and Neville in 1903. Their diagram was based on both thermal and microscopic evidence, and is the first for this series of alloys which can be considered nearly complete. Further, it was the first bronze diagram in which any attempt was made to apply the phase rule in the interpretation of the thermal and microscopic results. That portion of Heycock and Neville&apos;s diagram covered by the present work is reproduced in Figure 7.

"The Lower Jurassic Iron Mask batholith intrudes Upper Triassic Nicola Group volcanic rocks in the Quesnellia terrane of southcentral British Columbia and hosts Cu-Au mineralization. The batholith comprises three mappable intrusive phases, including: Pothook gabbro to diorite, Cherry Creek monzodiorite to monzonite and Sugarloaf diorite. The Iron Mask hybrid forms a fourth mappable unit that makes up to 45% of the areal exposure in the batholith. It is highly variable in texture and composition and subdivided into three types; Type I and II have abundant (partially digested) xenoliths, many of which are derived from the Nicola Group, whereas Type III is xenolith-poor and shows extreme outcrop-scale textural diversity.Pothook and Cherry Creek rocks are similar in texture, mineralogy, whole rock and mineral composition and style of alteration. Contacts between the two can be intrusive or gradational. Rocks collected from these two suites have compositions that are permissive of a single magma batch, although simple crystal fractionation does not explain all chemical variations within and between the two suites. The Sugarloaf unit comprises a diverse group of amphibole-phyric rock types and is texturally and mineralogically distinct from Pothook and Cherry Creek suites.The Iron Mask hybrid represents progressive stages of physical and chemical interaction between Nicola Group country rocks and Pothook magma. Magmatic assimilation (selective or partial) is supparted on the basis of field relationships, petrographic observations, and REB compositional data. Thermal dehydration and partial assimilation of Nicola Group rocks by Pothook magma is shown to be a valid means of promoting early and extensive volatile saturation in the Iron Mask batholith."

Lac Cinquante is a mineralogically simple, vein-hosted uranium deposit in Archean basement rocks (Angikuni greenstone belt) that originally were unconformably overlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Baker Lake Group (BLG). Basement rocks are mainly pillowed and massive tholeiitic lavas (N-MORB) with interbedded tuff; overlying sedimentary rocks comprise a basal talus/fault breccia that grades upward into fluvial sedimentary rocks and subaerial, trachytic volcanic rocks; granite and porphyry dikes (Hudson and/or Nueltin granitoids) intrude the basement rocks. A typical section through the Main Zone comprises 1) laminated ‘tuff’, 2) altered (carbonate-hematite-chlorite) schistose ‘tuff’, 3) a pitchblende-bearing, breccia-vein, 4) altered ‘tuff’, and 5) laminated ‘tuff’. The vein comprises brecciated chlorite, hematite, and pitchblende with carbonate cementing the breccia. Graphitic ‘tuff’ with sulfide-stringer veinlets locally overlies or underlies the vein. Pitchblende also occurs in the altered rocks and in gash veins that cut basement rocks. U-Pb ages on pitchblende fall into two groups: one at 1828 } 29 Ma reflects primary uranium mineralization, and a second at 1437 } 31 Ma represents resetting. Pb-Pb chemical ages show other resetting events at 1260-1321Ma, 895 Ma, 741-813 Ma, and 660-706 Ma. One possible genetic model for the Lac Cinquante deposit involves leaching of uranium from granitoids and the BLG by basinal brines that migrated to depositional sites where graphitic rocks acted as a reductant. A second model requires that uranium was sole-sourced from the BLG and that granitoid rocks provided heat to drive the hydrothermal system, which leached and ultimately precipitated uranium. The deposit has characteristics similar to vein-type uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge District of Saskatchewan

This paper comprises a general outline of all of the developments, including the history, geology, mining, milling, power and transportation installations, at the gold mining operation of La Luz Mines Limited and the copper mining operation of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Rosita Mines Limited, both located in north-central Nicaragua. The low-grade, gold-bearing ore-bodies of La Luz Mines, contained in highly fractured and folded Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, were from 1909 to 1928, mined and treated by primitive methods by the La Luz and Los Angeles Mining Company. The abandoned property was acquired by La Luz Mines Limited in 1936, and was equipped with modern machinery and put into production in 1939. Between 1939 and 1948, the daily rate of production was in-creased from 300 tons per day to 2,-000 ton per day. The ore reserves available for open-pit mining were depleted in 1954. Since then, the entire production has come from under-ground operations.

Historically, extracting dissolved solids from formation water was economically motivated. Today, main drivers are environmental benefits and regulations, as large volumes of water needed for hydraulic fracturing require treatment before reuse or disposal. The concentration of dissolved solids in flowback water increases with each use and may require treatment prior to disposal. Element recovery from produced water is not profitable unless market conditions are favourable, recoverable elements are abundant, and economical recovery methods are established. Sale of recovered materials could offset recycling and disposal costs. This paper describes markets for Cl, Na, Ca, K, Sr, Mg, Br, Ba, I, B, and Li, and their concentrations in produced water from oil and gas wells in British Columbia. It recommends revising sampling protocol for produced water.

"Reporting of the gold production during a month implies to estimate the mass of gold that is processed by a mill, recovered as dorés, lost to the tailings and the change of gold inventory within the plant equipments. Carbon in pulp and/or carbon in leach tanks may contain gold inventory as large as 72 000 g (2 200 troy oz) of gold which needs to be estimated from measurements obtained from sampling the material contained in a tank. Sampling and analysis introduce measurement errors that could be systematic and/or random. This paper examines the effect of measurement errors on the estimation of the gold inventory and on the variation of the inventory in the carbon in leach tanks of the Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited Lapa concentrator. Results of the analysis demonstrate that the inventory is measured with ±10% reproducibility, while the variation of inventory used for mass balance is known with ±300% reproducibility.INTRODUCTIONThe preparation of a production report implies to reconcile measured data with the constraint of material balance over the considered period of production. The sampling and data reconciliation problems were recently reviewed by Morrison (2008) and Jansen (2009a; 2009b). Typically a production report is prepared to cover a period over which the mass conservation hypothesis can be considered valid. In gold processing plants, the change of inventory can seldom be neglected and plays a significant role in material balance calculations. This is particularly true for circuits using carbon adsorption, where the complete cycle of carbon is measured in days.In a 2000 t/d gold ore processing plant, the inventory can be as large as 140 000 g of gold in gravity concentrator bins, carbon in pulp tanks and in the electrolysis circuit. This is equivalent to the mass of gold that fed the circuit during 10 days of operation with 7 g/t feed assays. The change of inventory may therefore strongly impact the production figures and especially the plant recovery at the end of a week or a month. Despite the financial impact associated with gold inventory, few publications are devoted to the subject. Bruington (1991) and Morrison (2008) discussed the problem and stressed the need for the development of reliable methods to estimate the gold inventory in carbon in pulp or carbon in leach circuits."

The Kwyjibo deposit is an iron oxide Cu-REE-F-Mo-Au mineralization of Mesoproterozoic age located in the Grenville Province approximately 120 km NE of Sept-Îles, Quebec (Figure 1). Occurring along the SE margin of the Canatiche granitic complex, the deposit is composed of several polymetallic showings that are related to different textural facies of magnetite. The mineralization process at Kwyjibo is complex, and is divided into Early Granitophile, Magnetite, Main Polymetallic and Specular Hematite stages (Cayer et al., submitted for publication). The Main Polymetallic stage, comprising chalcopyrite, pyrite, fluorite, molybdenite and REE-bearing minerals, is superimposed on pre-existing magnetiterich rocks. Discovered by SOQUEM Inc. in 1993, the Kwyjibo deposit shares many characteristics with other hydrothermal polymetallic iron oxide deposits around the world. Foose and McLelland (1995) suggested that this class of mineralization could occur in the Grenville Province. However, only a few polymetallic occurrences are known to be associated with low-Ti iron oxide deposits in the Grenville. Kwyjibo is one of the most significant examples of a polymetallic iron oxide deposit to have been found in the Grenville Province to-date.

"The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from underground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12851 g/t (375 oz/T) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.In the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/T) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however, indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results.The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this data base, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

In this study, the effect of chemical interactions of materials used in ion flotation on the removal of Ni(II) ions from low concentration synthetic wastewater was studied. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ethylhexadecyldimethylammonium bromide (EHDABr) as collectors and methyl isobutyl carbonyl (MIBC) and Dowfroth250 as frothers were used. To investigate the effective parameters and interactions of them, 16 experiments including 6 level variables were performed by supporting DX7 software and on the bases of 2-level factorial method. In the first step, the tests were conducted in a Hallimond tube. The result showed that collector of SDS and frother of Dowfroth 250 had appropriate interaction with each other at pH = 3. In the second step, optimal results from the first step were evaluated in a mechanical flotation cell. The removal of Ni(II) ions increased by increasing the time of flotation and they have a direct relation with the water removal. The kinetics study shows that the order and the rate of removal of the reaction do not follow any of the zero-order, first-order and second-order equations. The flotation rate curve on the removal of Ni(II) ions will divide the separation process to two stages, a fast flotation rate at the first stage and a slow flotation rate at the second stage. Ni(II) ions removal was obtained 88% at the best condition.This study showed that the use of ion flotation was a very effective method for Ni(II) ion removal from industrial wastewaters.

Few industries can afford to ignore them, least of all, perhaps, the mining industry.Consider the following developments:I. "This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations regarding the use and testing of cage safety catches, including a brief history and evolution. Regulations are similar across provinces, with only slight variations. Currently, the “Ontario-type” safety dog is the most commonly used safety catch in Canada. Performance estimation of the compensation mechanism for different safety-dog shapes and tooth angles show this shape works well and has consistent braking results, but the best efficiency is obtained for initial tooth angles greater than 10°. Miner safety is questionable for lightly loaded cages, an issue that should be addressed technically and legislatively.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare les diverses réglementations de sécurité minière concernant les parachutes des cages dans les provinces canadiennes ainsi que les essais qu’ils doivent subir. Il semble que les réglementations soient semblables à travers les provinces avec quelques légères différences ou divergences. Un bref historique des parachutes et de leur évolution est présenté. De nos jours, le parachute de « type Ontario » est le plus fréquemment employé à travers le Canada et il présente des résultats de freinage uniformes. Une estimation de la performance du mécanisme de compensation pour les diverses formes de taquets de sécurité et les divers angles des dents montre que cette géométrie fonctionne bien; cependant, la meilleure efficacité est obtenue pour des angles de dents supérieurs à 10°. La sécurité des mineurs est mise en jeu pour des cages faiblement chargées et ce point devrait être traité du point de vue technique et du point de vue législatif."

ABB has received an order for one of the most challenging mill drive projects in its history. With one SAG mill and one ball mill to be added at an iron ore mine in Sweden, the customer’s plant managers wanted to have the most efficient solution for driving their mills but had the budget limitations typically faced by the majority of mining companies during periods of market downturn. To find the best balance between cost of acquisition and highest performance throughout the lifetime of the plant, ABB was selected to deploy a synchronized bypass solution, in which only one drive system is used for two different mills in series. However, being one of the first grinding mills in the world with such a solution was not the only challenge the ABB team faced: The inclusion of some mill application functions - e.g., frozen charge protection, automatic positioning and creeping mode - brought the demands on the engineers to another level. With only one frequency converter and one mill application controller available, the configuration logic and interlocks had to be meticulously designed and thoroughly tested to ensure a smooth and safe startup. The solution offers a footprint reduction and more operator flexibility at a reduced investment as each mill can be run in both directions, and wear on the mechanical components can be greatly reduced due to ABB’s premium ring-geared mill drive (RMD). This paper will describe the details of the project, the configuration developed and the tests performed to guarantee correct software functionality. Mill startup is scheduled for January 2016.

"Mineral exploration is an expensive speculative venture and calls for optimization of sampling. Exploration is generally planned in grid pattern to be conducted in phased manner. The objective of any such campaign is to assess the quality, quantity and its reliability. The traditional estimation methods are unable to provide a means of calculating the degree of reliability. Application of mathematical models can quantify the precision of estimation and bring forth decision-making criteria at any stage.In this paper three statistical and geostatistical models, viz., Frequency, Probability, and Semi-variogram, have been employed to evaluate sequential exploration data of RampuraAgucha zinc-lead deposit. The optimization in exploration for a specific objective has been highlighted.IntroductionAny exploration campaign demands heavy resource investment starting from the collection of the first sample to the production of the first ton of ore. The best estimation would be if the entire orebody is taken out and sampled. However, this is neither possible, nor desirable. Drilling is the primary tool of geological sampling. It shares the major portion of the investment and, thereby, warrants critical analysis at every stage during the ongoing exploration projects.The exploration program should be conducted as a well planned scheme based on a sequential evaluation approach in a phased way to achieve a specific objective. It would then be possible to evaluate exploration data at the completion of each phase by employing computer-based mathematical techniques to quantify the precision of the estimate for fulfillment of objectives. The subsequent drilling program should be modified accordingly."

"The influence of annealing of galvanized steel (galvannealing) on its corrosion kinetics in a saturated solution of Ca (OH)2 has been studied by means of the polarization resistance method.Galvannealing heat treatment was carried out at 450°C and 550°C for varying times. Annealing at 450°C for 24 hr or at 550°C for 5 hr showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr) ~= - 400 m V/ SCE as well as, the lowest corrosion current density (icorr ~= 3 mA.cm-2, while Ecorr and icorr of the unheated specimens were ~= - 1400m V/SCE and == 20 mA.cm-2, respectively.Polarization curves were also obtained for the as-received galvanized specimens together with the galvannealed ones.INTRODUCTIONHeat treatment of galvanized steel (i.e . galvannealing) is carried out at a temperature range of 450°C to 550°C for a time sufficient to convert the free zinc coating to an alloyed one consisting of layers of iron-zinc intermetallic compounds. Table I is a review of the properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallicphases while Figure I is a reproduction - of the Fe-Zn equilibrium phase diagram taken from Hansen.Several authors have studied the formation of intermetallic phases through the interdiffusion of Zn/Fe couples.
