The Monty Copper Gold Deposit is an ultra-high grade mine in Sandfire Resource’s Doolgunna region which was completely drilled out and developed within two years of commencing mine development. During this period, a total of 986 grade control diamond drill holes were completed, assayed, and validated, 15 levels developed, and 3136 faces mapped. The aggressive schedule meant a high flow of geological data was produced, validated, and incorporated into regular geological model updates. To process this data at a rate which allowed for timely use, more robust data processing methodologies needed to be generated. A new validation system was implemented which required two levels of validation being applied to any diamond drilling update. Step one was the validation of initial physical data including survey pick-ups and logging. This was done prior to new drill data being added to the geological model. Step two was the validation of assay data which was required prior to resource estimation. The implementation of Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo modelling software also allowed for a more seamless and efficient modelling workflow. The use of the Leapfrog Geo vein systems allowed for more rapid generation of geological models which then afforded more time for stringent assessment of the mineralisation system. An example of this was the introduction of cross-shift peer reviews in which opposing rosters of geologists would rigorously evaluate the previous rosters work prior to reporting. This additional level of validation resulted in more robust geological models and the identification of new ore trends. This presentation will detail the evolution of the Monty Geological model from a simple tabular indicated resource into a complex highly refined measured resource. Themes will include how the model was produced using workflows developed and optimised to meet key deliverables.

The process of sampling blasthole cones utilising personnel to manually shovel material into sample bags is a long-standing industry accepted process. However, this method has several drawbacks, including the safety issues around having personnel performing manual sampling in a harsh environment and the variability involved in getting a human to repeatedly get a ‘shovel full of dirt’, and make it always representative. Geophysical blasthole sampling, or utilising a Downhole Assaying Tool (DHAT) has been tested and has now begun implementation at many iron ore sites throughout the Pilbara region, Western Australia. This method uses a geophysical tool to capture data within blastholes, and together with a semi-autonomous logging platform to minimise risks around manual handling, delivers a multielement proxy-assay which can be utilised by the mine geology team to accurately domain the orebodies. Logistically, the combination of a specially designed tool and semi-autonomous truck are the way forward for a safer and more data-robust blasthole sampling practice. The method utilises a neutrongenerating geophysical tool and linked elemental spectroscopy sensor, which measures the response of the material surrounding an open hole. This delivers results at submetre intervals. These results are then utilised, similar to blasthole sample results, to map out areas within the blast pattern that are ‘ore’, ‘waste’, or ‘other suitable grade’. This paper outlines a project that has been in ‘proof of concept’ at selected Fortescue sites over the last few years with testing of these tools carried out on reverse circulation (RC), diamond drill and blastholes. The method is now being implemented at operational hematite mine sites. Fundamentally, the method adds more than enough value to justify its implementation. The aim is that these learnings will enable the greater industry to adapt, implement and improve their mining practices. Ultimately, the outcome will be greater value in mining for the industry by having a larger volume of good quality data to make reliable decisions on material movements, minimising ore-loss and dilution, and maximising the value of our current and future orebodies.

Mining is experiencing a difficult period of low profitability and declining productivity. To achieve sustainability, mining companies are challenged with improving output, quality and safety while decreasing costs. At the same time, organisations are having to manage a workforce in which individuals no longer accept a traditional style of management, employees prefer more flexible employment, and diversity within teams is becoming the expected norm.Increasing organisational diversity has been shown to have a positive impact on performance and therefore sustainability. Gender diversity and equality between working men and women is the area most studied in this regard. Executives are becoming more aware of the correlation between gender diversity and performance with some larger organisations having dedicated resources to increase the number and status of women in their organisations. Despite this, limited improvement in gender equality is apparent globally over the last decade with some industries, including mining, going backwards. So why is this the case and what other strategies are available?In 2015, the United Nations Women National Committee Australia (UN Women NCA) in conjunction with Autopia released a white paper discussing the lack of visible change in gender equality despite the widespread implementation of merit-based personnel management strategies. Using research from around the world and thoughts from influential government, education and business leaders, the paper ‘Rethinking Merit’ debunks the myth of the meritocracy. It provides a number of recommendations for organisations committed to improving their performance and sustainability through diversity, including a variety of real-life company examples, instead of relying solely on merit-based decision-making.This paper takes the recommendations of ‘Rethinking Merit’ and applies them to the mining industry. It shows the relevance that rethinking merit has for the industry and why applying the recommendations can result in an increase in diversity, therefore enabling greater performance and sustainability of mining companies. This paper provides case studies from Aurizon, Iluka Resources and BHP Billiton and, as a guide for managers, a generic diversity strategy designed to be implemented alongside traditional merit-based personnel management techniques.CITATION:Hobbs, K, 2016. This paper provides a simple guiding framework for grinding circuit optimisation, focussing on common themes in past optimisation success stories, the conditions for success and techniques that can be employed to identify and define opportunities. Many significant grinding circuit improvements have been reported for operating plants, based on recurring themes such as the optimisation of mill feed size, mill liner design, process control, critical size, grinding media and classification. The Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) is by far the largest and most diverse industrial processing region (with supporting industries) in Western Australia. As with elsewhere in Australia (and globally), the KIA is facing sustainability challenges on various fronts, such as increasing water and energy scarcity, climate change, an aging workforce, and growing community expectations. Through the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) the industries within Kwinana are working closely on common issues in the KIA, including the sustainable development of the region. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made by the industries towards the improvement of the sustainability performance at the company and regional level. Given the ever increasing sustainability pressures, there is strong desire to address sustainability challenges in the KIA, through a pro-active and collaborative industry approach. A sustainability roadmap is being developed to assist the KIC and its industry members with strategic decision making on the long-term sustainability of there. At the heart of the roadmap is a set of key performance indicators for each of seven priority themes or focus areas (water use, by-products produced, greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, economic performance, environment, community impacts and sustainable workforce). Aspirational targets and subsequent strategies are being developed for those activities where the KIC has an influence and can make a positive impact. The indicators and their targets enable constructive stakeholder discussions (eg with government and community) on emerging local issues and possible future directions for the KIA. The paper will report on the development process and the preliminary results of the sustainability roadmap for the KIA, including a historical perspective on milestones achieved so far and future aspirations.

Throughout Australia and the world, there have been in recent years a number of incidents involving the reaction of ammonium nitrate based explosives with ground containing certain types of sulphides. This paper presents a comprehensive strategy designed to identify, assess and mitigate the risks involved with blasting in areas of reactive ground. Undertaking blasting in reactive or potentially reactive ground involves a degree of risk, the level of which is dependent upon the controls in place for specific sites; this in turn depends upon the degree of sound reasoning and judgement behind the implementation of these controls. Implementation of controls to minimise the risk of incidents also involves a measurable increase in production and blasting costs. To achieve a balanced solution to this matter, decision-makers need to understand how the risks eventuate, how they should be evaluated, and how control measures reduce the risk. Also required is an understanding of how the problem affects the economics of the operation, and the magnitude of this effect. It is the aim of this paper to provide a structured approach to gaining this knowledge, so that mine management, the workforce and explosive suppliers may jointly develop more effective economic and safe blasting systems for potentially reactive ground. Using a combination of fault/event tree risk assessment and semi-quantitative analysis, a structured approach to dealing with the issue will be illustrated.

A paper identifying anticipated challenges in the extraction of the N3500 Orebody at Glencore Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations was written in 2007. The paper identified the depth of the deposit, the anticipated high stresses, talc alteration and issues with ground support as factors that may affect production. A number of strategies were planned to cope with these issues. After six years of extraction those strategies are evaluated and additional measures taken are outlined. The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. Resources added to the global metal inventory through exploration over the past 15 years have been generally of poor quality (declining grades, recoveries and lack of acceptable financial return). Similarly, companies opting for an acquisitions-based strategy have had to pick from a group of poorer quality resources left from previous exploration booms, and will struggle to deliver this metal to market economically. Increasing difficulty in obtaining sufficient social and community acceptance of mining projects and potentially an energy-constrained future may exacerbate this problem, redefining what is considered ‘ore’. There will need to be more focus on deposit quality, defined as sustainable margin in the future business environment.Traditionally there has been a lack of translation of ‘mineralisation quality’ back to mineral project design and mineral exploration. This disconnect is due to two main factors: the first is technical – inherent deposit variability; and the second is organisational and socio-psychological –the mindset of explorers and project managers themselves.There are four elements to value realisation for a mineral deposit: (1) social licence to operate; (2) geological factors (depth, geometry, water and geotechnical, and geometallurgy – influenced by texture, mineralogy, chemistry and grades); (3) financial engineering (capex, opex, future commodity prices, future energy prices), and (4) operating factors (production rate, recovery, energy consumption). These elements are strongly interdependent, and geology underpins and drives linkages between them. A quality deposit addresses all of these elements and thus can be developed in a time frame that allows acceptable returns to the owners of the invested capital.Geological drivers of the above elements can be measured and mapped throughout a deposit. Moreover, when viewed in the context of mineral systems, a predictive understanding of the common causative processes of quality (despite deposit-scale variability) is emerging, and with it the ability to target quality of mineralisation, not just quantity of mineralisation.The second factor is a ‘heuristic software problem’. Current lines of education (and consequently organisational and professional structures) are discipline-based, producing ‘silos’ that do not speak each other’s language and work with different ‘mental models’. People who effectively recognise systemic links between these silos are called ‘boundary spanners’, of which we propose two distinct types: outside-insiders and inside-outsiders. Outside-insiders are people who are within a community, but recognise advances in outside fields and effectively integrate them into the community. Inside-outsiders start outside of a community, and successfully bring new ideas into it. Common traits in boundary spanners are: they seek exposure to (and embrace) key ideas that are outside of the framework of their own specialisation; they have high mental processing ability (MPA) – the ability to connect systems that are currently not perceived to be connected; and they introduce ideas from outside a field into a new context in a way that re-frames the field.The challenge is to identify and nurture potential boundary spanners that can build critical links, in particular between the (largely geoscientific) mineral exploration mindset and the (largely non-geoscientific) project development mindset. The relationship between the geology of porphyry copper deposits and their processing performance is an area of interest. Being able to predict comminution properties of the ore from physical characteristics and geological descriptions would allow an increase in the precision of capital cost estimates, operating cost estimates and throughput rates. This geometallurgical approach would reduce the requirements for expensive comminution tests.As the comminution circuit is the highest capital cost item in the plant and a possible throughput bottleneck, understanding the variability in hardness within the orebody is critical. A geometallurgical model allows calculation of ore hardness values in mining blocks from ore characterisation data. This model subsequently uses a combination of simulation and power-based approaches to relate ore hardness and flotation feed size to grinding circuit throughput.This paper reviews the geometallurgical models developed for seven porphyry copper deposits and discusses the strengths and shortfalls of the methodology and similarities and differences between the different deposits.CITATION:Harbort, G J, Lam, K and Sola, C, 2013. The social license to operate (SLO) began as a metaphor for the ability of communities to stop mining projects. Soon people began to speak of levels of social license and the ability of communities to raise costs without completely stopping exploration or mining activities. Today the concept has spread to other industries and is evolving towards becoming a general management perspective on the socio-political rights and responsibilities of the corporation. The business case underpinning the SLO perspective on management is the need to assess and manage socio-political risk. For mining companies, socio-political risk has been steadily rising for several reasons, including the efforts of non-government organisations (NGOs) to pre-empt government policy options; the entry of mining companies into jurisdictions weak in the rule of law; and the weakness of global economic and financial regulation. In this perilous world beyond the comfort zone of effective government, mining companies must build their own socio-political stability by engaging directly with stakeholders to develop a strong SLO. In order to become a practical management perspective, the SLO needs to be measurable, which amounts to measuring the socio-political risks and opportunities presented by stakeholders. We present the results of efforts since 2009 to develop a globally reliable and valid measurement tool at the project and industry levels, validated in studies in Australia, Bolivia, Mexico and the USA. A factor analysis suggested four factors that mine management can address to raise their SLO level. The most chronically neglected factor involves the political right of the corporation to foster more equitable social contracts locally and regionally in both developed and developing countries. In most underground mines, the ventilation system is a significant portion of the total mine capital and operating cost and the largest consumer of underground electrical power. The effectiveness of the ventilation system has a major bearing on the safety, health, comfort and morale of underground personnel, and has a critical role in meeting production targets and therefore business revenue. Perhaps the most important component of the primary ventilation system is the primary fan. Correct performance testing of the primary fan during the warranty period is important not only to ensure the mine has obtained the asset that it paid for and can therefore deliver on the fanÆs crucial safety and economic role in the future of the mine, and to provide a justification for releasing final performance warranty payments to the supplier, but also to provide a benchmark or baseline against which to assess future performance issues. As there are at least three potential international standards available to measure fan performance, there has been considerable confusion regarding which of these to use for testing primary mine fans, and also the correct allowances and tolerances to use. This paper provides guidance on which standards to use for different applications, how the standards should be interpreted, what allowances and tolerances are reasonable, and other important issues to be resolved with the fan supplier prior to making a contract award. A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful empirical or engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, while more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic and numerical descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The fragmentation resulting from any blast will be heavily dependent on the properties of the rock mass being blasted; however, most empirical models rely on ‘rock factors’ generated from simple rock mass properties to describe the influence of the rock on the blasting outcome. In contrast, mechanistic models need explicit rock mass properties that require sophisticated laboratory measurements and detailed structural data if realistic outcomes are to be generated. The fragmentation modeller is caught between excessively simple rock mass descriptions for the empirical models and excessively complex data requirements for the mechanistic models.This paper briefly reviews the basis of a range of fragmentation models and the rock mass properties on which they rely. Shortcomings in the way that the mining industry tends to characterise the blasting properties of rock are discussed and some practical approaches are described to quantify these properties in both operating and greenfield mining environments. Mine closure planning integrated into life-of-mine (LOM) planning during the operational phase consists of many subcategories. One of these subcategories that needs to be fully integrated into the LOM planning is that of water management planning. Issues arise when mine water management infrastructure, which is required post-mine closure, is only considered closer to the end of LOM. Once the mine is closed monitoring is focused on water quality as an indicator of closure performance, hence inadequate upfront post-mining water management planning or integration into operations will result in environmental harm. The lack of considering post-mining water management is not uncommon in LOM planning. Poor mine site water management and planning are a wide reaching problem for the mining industry. Numerous active mines have been issued with environmental notices and penalties for contaminated water discharge; including issues with abandoned mines now being cared for by governments all over the world.Mitigating sources of water contamination caused by existing and closed mine sites that are leaching pollutants might be impractical, due to inaccessibility to the contaminants or final landform topography. The opportunity to consider and introduce post-closure required mine water management infrastructure is lost once the waste facilities are constructed. Mitigating contamination is made more problematic with mines located in remote areas, serviced by dedicated roads, water supply, electrical supply, etc. It is expected that these services will be decommissioned or drastically reduced, once closure is reached making remedial work much harder. Inadequate planning, to ensure access and easily maintainable water management infrastructure, could lead to erosion and contamination going unnoticed. There are numerous examples of poor mine water management practices in Africa, Asia, Australia, South and North America. The Mogalakwena North Concentrator of Anglo Platinum Operations was built with the capability to allow for future projected expansion. Several research groups, currently working with Anglo American on collaborative research over a range of projects, were brought in to review the existing operation, with a view to releasing some specific bottlenecks and providing specialist design input to the potential plant expansion.Based on a thorough review of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and crushing circuit, a wide range of de-bottlenecking opportunities were identified. This was followed by a series of surveys to provide performance measurements and to model the circuit in detail. From this effort a full simulation of the plant has been developed, including updated models of the HPGR, crusher, bins and screens. These models have been implemented in the researchersÆ Model Development Kit (MDK) version of JKSimMet, and in a prototype dynamic simulator based on the Matlab Simulink software.The observations, measurements and simulations have provided guidance and quantified the benefits of some proposed circuit modifications. Based on these findings a number of upgrades are being planned, with the aim of ensuring full utilisation of the installed equipment. A cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning, geometallurgy is seen as the next logical advance in improving the design and operation of mining businesses. This rapidly evolving field is focused on realising the value that has often been lost in the chasms between the aforementioned technical silos. When successful, the geometallurgical approach promises the ability to tailor mining and mineral processing development and operational options more closely to the characteristics of the resource with resulting lower costs (both capital and operating), improved recoveries and fewer project failures.As with any technological (or managerial) change, there will be side effects from the success of the geometallurgical approach that will impact areas beyond obvious linkages between geology and processing. Some of these effects have the potential to be beneficial to the resource industry and society in general. Beyond the basic geometallurgical promise of closer alignment between processing design/strategy and the multivariate 3D spatial characteristics of the mineralisation, this paper discusses the broader implications and ramifications of the emergent geometallurgical approach: enhancing exploration and discovery; improving project development success; achieving sustainability in an industry working with non-renewable resources; in a world of increasingly hard won license to operate, improving the management of potentially harmful by-products and waste materials (with knock on effects for proactive management of closure issues); smarter approaches to energy management and thus optimisation of projects with respect to carbon footprint; and potential to re-value assets and thus realise a strategic advantage in the area of acquisitions, divestments, mergers and take overs. The authors strongly believe that companies that actively engage with the above issues (and ensure that technical efforts in the area of geometallurgy are not isolated from the larger value chain activities of the firm) will be able to exploit the opportunities that consequentially arise. These early adopters will gain first mover advantages. Firms taking the broad view of geometallurgy will have an opportunity to maximise stakeholder value and win greater success than their less insightful competitors.

Fimiston Open Pit is operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. Over 110 years of underground mining resulted in the development of nearly 3500 km of underground workings including backfilled and open stopes up to half a million tonnes in size. These voids significantly complicate blasting processes at KCGM, influencing blast movement direction and magnitude. Blast movement monitoring to improve mine reconciliations was identified as an improvement project in the business plan for the geology team in 2008. Following successful trials in 2008 to 2009, blast monitoring and translation of ore blocks were implemented as a permanent grade control program from late 2009 and is now part of the Management Operating System (MOS) of the mine. This paper presents a summary of results from the Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM®) data collected to date. Ore blocks at KCGM are translated primarily using BMM® data. This data is obtained from the BMM® system which measures the movement of a radio transmitter installed in a blast pattern from a preblast position to a post-blast position. The application of the data collected by the BMM® tends to be both mine site and blast specific. At KCGM, an average distance obtained from the BMM® data within a given shot is the primary method used for translation. In the case that BMM® data is unavailable, a theoretical movement vector established from Orica Shotplus with distances gained from the historical BMM® database is used. Data is presented in an ore loss and dilution exercise for a bench undertaken at KCGM to understand the potential effects on reconciliations. Improvements that have flowed from implementing blast monitoring include improved reconciliations when combined with other grade control improvement projects. The increase in liaison between the geology and blast personnel at KCGM has been a significant improvement gained from the implementation of the blast monitoring program. This has allowed a better understanding of blast movement and the effects on ore dilution and ore loss by the mine geology team. In addition, the discussion of blasting tie-in plans between geology and blasting personnel has been improved which leads to more favourable blasting practices that take ore movement into account.

Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.

Australia is currently developing and engineering a range of specialised processing options for rare earth (RE) (Lynas, 2011, Alkane, 2005), zirconia (Alkane, 2005), lithium (Galaxy Resources, 2008) and other special minerals and metals required in high-tech applications. The processing of lithium, zirconium and RE minerals is based on complex leaching processes which require extensive liquor clarification, solid liquid separation and solids washing. The filtration properties for those leach liquors, residues and precipitates are not well understood and differ drastically according to the process route applied. Thus, filtration test work is essential for equipment selection, sizing and design. Similar types of slurries are filtered in laterite nickel, TiO2 and other chemical oriented processes, while more experience is available here as those processes are applied widely for a number of decades. The increasing need for dry stacking of tailings requires advanced tailings filtration with properties differing drastically depending on tailings properties. More traditional mineral processes such as flotation commonly apply filtration. All of these and other cases require proper filtration test work particularly evaluation of vacuum versus pressure filtration and the need for cake pressing and/or air blowing for filter presses. Bench scale test work and/or pilot plant operation is common to determine filtration rates, achievable cake moisture and wash efficiencies and sometimes filtrate clarity. While those values are important, there is much more valid information to be obtained by filtration test work.This paper discusses the intricacy of filter selection and sizing based on driving forces (vacuum and pressure air, compression by mechanical means and slurry) and parameters (cake thickness, forces and times) and different processes utilised in common filtration equipment. It will discuss the in’s and out’s of filtration test work design, planning, and in particular data gathering, processing, reporting, evaluation and filter sizing from recent examples of bench and pilot scale filtration test work for above applications together with methods for predicting filtration performance for example where test work is lacking. One focus will be the realistic extrapolation of test work results towards different parameters utilised in full scale equipment and plants. The conclusion of the paper will contain checklist for filtration test work.

Banded Iron Formations or more commonly known as BIF are sedimentary rock formations with alternating silica-rich layers and iron-rich layers that are typically composed of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite), iron-rich carbonates, and/or iron-rich silicates. Considering the depletion of highgrade iron ore reserves in South Africa, there is a need to maximise resource utilisation through the exploitation of sterile resources in particular BIF material which makes up greater than 65 per cent of current reserves. BIF, like most resources, is non-renewable and the deposition of BIF is thought to have come about by the reaction of Fe2+ ions in the ocean water with dissolved oxygen billions of years ago. BIF ore derived from the Limpopo region in South Africa (SA) located in the Penge Iron Formation is according to Cairncross, Kramers and Villa (2018) equivalent to that contained within the Asbestos Hills Iron Formation of the Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape, SA. Considering that these are one of the largest iron ore deposits in SA, the case study involved mineralogical characterisation followed by beneficiation of BIF from these two regions to ascertain the comparability. Coarse and fines gravity separation comprising of Heavy Liquid Separation/Dense Media Separation on the +1.18 mm size fraction and shaking table on the -1.18 mm size fraction was conducted to ascertain whether an on-grade product or blended feedstock could be produced. The Limpopo mixed and Northern Cape conglomerate BIF samples achieved similar overall responses due to the conglomerate sample containing 15.3 per cent additional -1.18 mm fines. A combined coarse and fines product grading at 60 per cent Fe could be achieved at a yield and recovery of 43.9– 53.0 per cent and 62.2–63.8 per cent respectively. Increasing the grade to 63 per cent Fe reduces the overall recovery by 13.3 per cent. At the higher target grade, the contaminant specifications could be achieved for both samples. The Northern Cape laminated BIF sample is the most promising of the three samples studied. At the two iron target grades overall yields and iron recoveries of 72.9–65.4 per cent and 85.2– 80.2 per cent was achieved. In both instances the silica grade exceeded the product specification, however if the silica content is the driver the target iron grade should increase to 63.32 per cent. This will result in a minimal decrease in recovery of 0.4 per cent. The promising results of this study indicate that coarse beneficiation of BIF material is possible. These ore types could be blended with superior grade products to improve overall yields and recoveries or sold directly at a 63 per cent Fe product grade whilst sacrificing 0.4–13.3 per cent recovery.
